woke up and someone spilled vanilla extract all over my dash, so as punishment you strange little beasties are getting all the VANILLA FACTS i know:

vanilla is the 2nd most expensive spice in the world (2nd to saffron)

which is why more than 99% of what we call "vanilla extract" is actually vanillin (vanilla's dominant flavor compound) and is not extracted from real vanilla.

luckily, even professionals struggle to tell the difference when it comes to things like baked goods. but there is a distinct difference in non-heat treated products like vanilla ice cream. real vanilla has a more complex, individualized flavor profile.

why is vanilla so expensive? because it is a ridiculously delicate & demanding crop. complete primadonna.

vanilla beans come from vanilla orchids. these crazy flowers bloom for A SINGLE DAY and have to be HAND-POLLINATED in a process that is exhausting, delicate, and requires specialist knowledge passed down over generations.

then, if you're lucky, you get vanilla beans.

which then require months of further specialized treatment.

the entire process takes about a year and can go wrong at any stage

vanilla has been cultivated for over 800 years (possibly much longer). the first known cultivators are the Totonac, an indigenous people of Mexico.

the Aztecs used it as a sweetener to balance out the bitter taste of cocoa. it was popular in a drink called xocolatl--the precursor to modern hot chocolate!

it is only pollinated by a very specific orchid bee!!!

which is why no fruit could be grown outside of Mexico until the 1800s

Edmond Albius, born into slavery, invented the pollination method we still use today--launching a global industry when he was just 12 years old.

today, the majority of the world's vanilla is grown in Madagascar

if you want real vanilla, read the labels carefully--it's harder to find than you think!

both men love their work but it still stresses the hell out of them. they’d enter and leave work exhausted. but then you started working at alchemax. you - with your bright smile and glittering eyes. most of the scientists and associates were drawn to you, but miguel and johnathon were on a whole nother level.

johnathon definitely fell first. it was daunting when someone he found attractive was being so sweet to him. jonathon’s usually too stuck in his own little world to care about such frivolities, so you were something special.

★ he’s been late so many times because he’d chat with you for too long at your desk. at first he stumbled on his words with you, struggling to maintain eye contact while simultaneously trying not to stare too hard. now you’re one of the few people he feels comforting rambling to, because he knows you’re listening ★ johnathon loves it when you’d call him “doctor,” despite him insisting on his first name. sensing that air of respect from you makes him feel good about himself. ★ he takes great pride in making you laugh and smile with every chance he gets. this physicist has a vast arsenal of cheesy jokes, bad puns, and cute pick-up lines. ★ he visits you throughout the day whenever he can, and tries to muster up the courage to have lunch with you. you’re young and gorgeous and out of his league but he’d be damned if he didn’t try. and then miguel o'hara came back from his business trip.

miguel didn’t care for the last receptionist. she was rude and lazy and got his name wrong. so it was a pleasant surprise when he was greeted by you instead.

★ at first, your peppiness was too much for him, especially in the morning. he’d brush off your attempts at conversation and only mumble back to you when needed. such is the way of the resident grump at alchemax. but eventually, you wormed your way into his heart by remembering how he likes his coffee and staying up to help him on late nights in the lab. ★ miguel had to admit, you were a joy to have around. …and very very nice to look at. miguel's had a few serious relationships in the past, but they never ended well. since then he’s only indulged in one-night stands and temporary hook-ups. but he refused to look at you so fleetingly. ★ miguel started bringing you expensive bouquets of flowers for your desk, along with sweet little notes. he’s obsessed with the scent of your vanilla perfume. he wants to be your hero, there to open every door, pull out every chair, and drive away any creep. for him, creeps include johnathon.

johnathon wasn’t concerned when he’d see other scientists and workers flirt with you. he wholeheartedly believed you two had a special connection that couldn’t be replicated. but seeing miguel turn you into a blushing stuttering mess proved him wrong. there was competition closer than he thought, and if he didn’t act quickly, he’d lose you for good.

★ johnathon felt deeply insecure in comparison to miguel. dr. o’hara’s movie star face & dreamy hair made him feel like crap. ★ miguel clearly had way more experience in dating, always flirting with you so smoothly. johnathon on the other hand, is pretty sure he’s stuck in the friendzone with you. so he decided to experiment with bolder methods of winning your heart. ★ jonathon’s been more direct, showering you with compliments and buying you lunch whenever he could. he made it abundantly clear that he was single and that he liked you very much. you were his favorite person at alchemax, and for good reason.

miguel honestly thinks johnathon’s annoying as fuck. once john accidentally spilled hot coffee onto miguel on a very bad day, and he’s been bitter ever since. in the past johnathon would be friendly, but miguel would brush him off. who the hell is this lanky ass nerd and why is he hovering over him in HIS lab?

★ now he’s wondering why the geek is messing with his love now. it pisses him off, not just because johnathon knows he feels the same about you, but how john makes you happier than he’s ever seen you be. miguel’s flirty, and funny in his own, stubborn way, but he lacked johnathon’s endearing dorky nature that had you hooked. ★ miguel is soooo grumpy lmao ★ really johnny is such a silly sweet guy while miguel, mr. give everything 1000% over here is fighting for his life. it took miguel a whole ass week to come up with a joke as good as johnathon’s that made you laugh your ass off. my guy is trying waaay too hard.

at first, miguel confronts johnathon kindly. he’s sympathetic and straight to the point - they both hold the same intentions towards you, but only one of them can win. he can tell that johnathon’s a good guy, with a big heart, so he’d understand… right?

★ “i’m in love with them, dr. ohnn. this isn’t just a silly crush. so either help me, or please refrain from getting in my way.” ★ “no, i’m good.” ★ “...you’re WHAT?”

war!!!!! miguel is a bitch to johnathon. dr. octavius has to give johnathon advice on how to win you over and how to fend off miguel. he’s gotten a lot better at brushing off miguel’s judgemental comments and acting unbothered by them.

although it’s not like johnathon isn’t cunty either. when he makes you laugh sometimes it’s because he’s making fun of miguel behind his back. he has a killer miguel impression that puts the original to shame.

★ “ugh, my shoulders are too broad and muscular. it’s so hard being so fit.” ★ “johnny!! he’s coming this way!” ★ “i work out every single part of my body at the gym. i do forehead pushups to keep my hairline in check.” ★ “JOHNNY-”

as long as a certain collider project goes swimmingly, and a radioactive spider stays in it’s fucking lane, you’ll end up with one of them.

Are there any holidays in the various regions of SRC?

Yup, lots of them. I'm going to focus mainly on stickfigure holidays because there's tons of different cultures and species, and stickmen are the most prominent.

As it stands, zero holidays exist as we know them on earth. There are several that are analogous to Earth holidays, but since so many Earth holidays are formed from religion, I can't exactly go around calling something Christmas in a world where Christ does not exist, yknow?

In the earlier months of the year, they of course have a new year celebration. However, instead of it being in the middle of winter, SRC new year is at the start of winter. In some cultures, usually eastern ones, they celebrate a new year at the end of winter when the first plants begin to sprout.

Western new year celebrations typically involve huge feasts, derived from the pre-industrial cultural necessities of hunting and preserving meat and harvesting grains so they can survive the winter. Nowadays, this typically involves cake and pastries, as well as meat-and-grain dishes like pot pies or curry rice.

In the south, where there is no winter, new year typically lines up with the start of the dry season which is usually celebrated the same way. In the east and further north, new year celebrations typically involve festivals, dressing in the colors of the spring flowers and singing colorful songs. Tons and tons of parties! Especially because it leads right into-

Spring, which is an absolute menace of a "holiday". You know how obnoxious and invasive Valentine's day can be in the USA? Imagine that, cranked up to 11, spread across the course of three or so weeks. This is the time of year when stickmen are most lovey, since their favorite flowers- the Sanor Lilies- are in bloom during this time.

Sanor lilies are a white and pink species of lily that smell very good, like warm vanilla and chocolate. They have a mild aphrodisiac effect on stickmen and some other closely related species like certain bears. Since sanor lilies are fucking everywhere in spring and are cultivated in some places for beauty products, you can't really go anywhere in stickman society without hearing about them or seeing them. It's like if dandelions made you horny. Imagine that!

Spring, which is sometimes called Elroudon in certain cultures, otherwise doesn't really have a "holiday name" and is called many different things across Cier. It's a nightmare for Sorcerers because sorcerers are mildly allergic to sanor lily pollen. Most other species like Digidevils and fauns and dragons think it's an irritating and bombastic holiday, what with it being over some lame flowers.

While SRC does not have Halloween, it does have Gourdlight, also known in other cultures by different names. Gourdlight is the most common name used in the southwest. It's a week-long holiday that shares some aspects with Halloween, Dia De Los Muertos, and Oktoberfest, among others.

Gourdlight as a holiday was coined several centuries ago, being dedicated to fear angels, which are giant mothman-like anurognathids that feed on the dark energy from nightmares. In the past, people didn't understand that fear angels are gentle creatures that help people, and coined the name "fear angel" to describe them as omens of the dead and of the dark.

As such, stickmen would put up candles and mage lights to attempt to ward off the fear angels. This evolved into putting them inside gourds, believing that a terrifying face on a gourd would ward off the fear angels, giving them the impression that the home was already haunted by one much more eerie.

Gourdlight has costumes, just like Halloween! Unlike Halloween, these costumes are brilliant and colorful, which was derived from a superstition that it would confuse the terrifying fear angels into believing that there are no nightmares to be found. The costumes were mostly taken from Raiteran culture, and adopted into southern and eastern versions of the holiday.

One tradition that is relatively recent [within the past couple centuries] is that of the gourd hunt, where one of these fellas:

is enchanted with an animation spell and allowed to run around. Kids love chasing these things! Whoever catches it, stabs it to kill the "monster", and dons it as a hat will win the hunt and get a special savory pastry.

The last one I'll talk about for today since this post is getting long will be the Winter Festival. It is a holiday only present in southwest Cier, primarily centered in Andorough City, which is surrounded by tropical regions. Several decades ago, an elder dragon by the name of Quelexeo flew over the skies of Andorough and was enticed in by the smell of food and sound of laughter. See, Andorough used to be a solely tropical region, and everywhere Quelexeo flies brings winter weather and snow with him. There's a thin strip of land across the south where it snows every year, but not for much longer than a day.

The first year that Quelexeo showed up, the entire city of Andorough was buried in a blanket of snow nearly four feet deep for the entire year. Many people died that year, having frozen to death in a new hell that they weren't prepared to endure. Quelexeo loved the food and the laughter of children that he witnessed in the city, but he noticed that his weather-affecting magic was bringing despair to the city around him.

As a way to try and give back to those who had lost so much, he would lay down in the center of the city, on top of the highest point, and announce to all of Andorough that if they were to work together and clear the snow, and bring it to him, he would give them gifts beyond their imagination. Tens of thousands of people heard his call, and those who had already been working to help their communities were the first to rush to the job.

They brought him the snow, he transformed it into outrageous amounts of food and tools to help clear it. The warmth radiating from the center of the city, with exponentially more of the community working together to restore it, eventually cleared all of the snow and left everyone with hundreds of thousands of gifts as thanks and as apologies for the dragon's wrongdoings.

However, many people thanked Quelexeo for what he did, as he brought a withering and sad city to its knees only to help them come together and help each other. Before he left, many of those who were helped and moved during the disaster asked for him to return again sometime, just for not as long and with not as much snow.

Now, Quelexeo visits once a year during his winter migration, and stays in Andorough in the same spot where he initially perched - which has since been cleared to create a park for him to rest in. During this time, people bring him snow, baked goods, and other gifts in return for his own gifts. Many of them are clothing, special food, enchanted dragon feathers, Cierites, or rarely enchanted RICE. It's the one time of year where all of Andorough slows to a crawl, as a reminder of the disaster that befelled them several decades ago.

Biography

RM started as an underground rapper in Seoul, where he gained popularity to the point of being noticed and recruited by Big Hit Entertainment. A hip-hop group that then evolved to be a K-pop group was formed around him and he was appointed the leader.

While slowly but surely leading BTS at the top of the musical world, he shared his view on life and empathized with oppressed communities, from his inclusion of the LGBT community in song lyrics to his speech at the UN. He has always been invested in the writing, the composition and later the production of BTS songs. Yet, he still found the time for more personal projects, especially in 2015, the year he did the most solo activites.

No problems.

Smiling.

Always Smiling.

Well, that wasn’t our story.

Let’s start with the dog. Princess is a bulldog who drools so much her slobber could water the flowers on my patio. If she were allowed on my patio, that is. My cat, Wiggles, who holds residence there, shifting with the pockets of sun throughout the day, would never allow it.

Unfortunately, my first interaction with Princess was me tripping over her leash in the parking lot. It was not graceful or cute. I skinned my elbow pretty good. My new neighbor, who I had not yet met, untangled the leash from Princess’ feet and gently berated her. I jumped up and took off to avoid awkward apologies. My neighbor shouted, “So sorry!” and without looking back I waved my hand as if to say, “No worries,” as blood trickled down to my armpit.

He probably thought I was either angry or a jerk, or both. Or he thought that I hated dogs, which is not totally true, to be clear. Whatever the case, on the day I tripped, my neighbor and I got off on the wrong foot, so to speak.

This began a series of unfortunate events, to the dismay of Hallmark writers and viewers everywhere.

Unpopular take but I don't know why people think Martin hates Sansa? To me, he likes her a lot. I only sympathize with Arya when I read the books for the first time and even then I didn't demonize Sansa because of her. After rereading a few times, you notice that every Sansa action is explained and it's obvious that she does nothing in bad faith, that's why I was shocked because people think she's a bad person. Now I read arya's agot chapters and I'm like: that's a jealous little girl lol. I just hope that george doesn't do another cat x lysa with then. But I agree with you when you say men help Arya meanwhile Sansa is always groomed, though I think this is because he is too fascinated by the Lolita thing and not because Arya is better than her.

All Martin has ever done was saying that Tyrion is fav character and he also said that he loves Ary* the best too. His first choice is always Tyrion though. And he also makes it clear that he LOVES all POVs.

Like I said before, Sansa represents the romantic side of him and one of the main themes of the series. His writing really gets more beautiful when he writes her POVs.

Asoiaf is different from the other fantasy books because it is more of a political series in a fantastical world and guess what, which Stark kid is more in those political plots?

Sansa leaves home to become a QUEEN, she lives as a lady and a political/war prisoner in the CAPITAL of the kingdom, she meets and observes other big players, she survives KL and now she is learning about politics and ruling even more in Vale under Baelish's teaching. So she is one of the main characters for the political arc of the series and she is going to be the WINNER of this arc. For Martin, she is very important. His bad or problematic choices don't come from his hatred, he is just writing the way he likes...

We can criticize him but I can't see him hating her (but I do believe he sometimes plays with the readers to make them to dislike her... average minded readers but still..)

My Martin = Ned idea is on point. Ned loves all of his children (Robb, Jon, Sansa, Ary*, Bran, Rickon) but like all parents he has a fav one: Ary*, Cat's fav was Bran for example.

Parents having fav children is usually a very subtle thing. This doesn't affect family dynamic that much but the moment it goes too far or gets repeated too many times, the problems start and other kids get hurt and this starts to affect their mood and choices in life. It happens to Sansa in AGOT. Even in her first POV, we see her feeling cheated by her father because him favoring Ary* more:

None of which stopped Ary*, of course. One day she came back grinning her horsey grin, her hair all tangled and her clothes covered in mud, clutching a raggedy bunch of purple and green flowers for Father. Sansa kept hoping he would tell Ary* to behave herself and act like the highborn lady she was supposed to be, but he never did, he only hugged her and thanked her for the flowers. That just made her worse.

Sansa can senses that their father is treating them differently and she feels like he gives more to Ary* when Sansa is the one who is trying to do more. Sansa's hurt doesn't get enough attention from Ned in the books:

“Ary* started it,” Sansa said quickly, anxious to have the first word. “She called me a liar and threw an orange at me and spoiled my dress, the ivory silk, the one Queen Cersei gave me when I was betrothed to Prince Joffrey. She hates that I’m going to marry the prince. She tries to spoil everything, Father, she can’t stand for anything to be beautiful or nice or splendid.”

“Enough, Sansa.” Lord Eddard’s voice was sharp with impatience.

So yeah Ned fails as a father and this shapes Sansa's choices in AGOT. BUT in the very end Ned still sacrifices his honor and his life for her. Because he LOVES her.

And Martin is the same. He favors Ary* more and while doing that Sansa suffers sometimes. Because of his writing choices average readers like Ary* more but he probably wasn't expecting this kind of hate in fandom. I am sure that he wanted to fool readers to root for Ary* and love her more than Sansa but he wasn't trying to make a statement like: Ary*-Good, Sansa-Bad.

He was just trying to put drama in the family (choosing two sisters for this was a problematic choice imo... like whole Lysa-Cat thing. But I believe that in the end they'll become closer as siblings like in the show).

BUT in the end, Martin loves Sansa and he cares about her. He is writing a triumphal story for her. He is believing in her and he is going to make her the queen of the place that his whole story had started. A beautiful love story when you look at it this way.

Yes he has made too many mistakes when it came to Sansa but the general feeling of love is still there.

About Lolita book, I don't know if Martin has ever said anything about that book but the "unreliable narrator" is really his thing so... possible. But in Asoiaf he gives enough narrative to tell that all those men are abusing Sansa. I don't like that subtext thing as a writing choice but at least Martin gives the clues for the REAL story, but idiot readers choose to ignore them.

Martin, sweety, most of your readers are stupid honey...

And yes Ary* suffers from rereadings while Sansa is getting better and better with every reread so people start to like her more and like their old favs less.

The look of... I: Osaka-Kitashinchi

Historical context Osaka was once one of the cities (if not THE city) with the biggest Geiko population in whole Japan. In 1935, around 3900 Geiko and Maiko called Osaka their home. However, the second world war, economic recession and lack of interest in traditional culture lead to their decline. In 1973, around 120 Geiko and Maiko were working in Osaka, down to only seven in 2018.

In it's heyday, Osaka had eight Hanamachi: Horie (堀江), Shinmachi (新町), Kitashinchi (北新地), and summarised as the "Nanchi Gokagai", meaning "Southern five Kagai": Kuroemon-cho (久郎右衛門町), Soemon-chô (宗右衛門町), Namba-shinchi (難波新地), Saka-cho (坂町) and Yagura-cho (櫓町). In 2021, only Kitashinchi and Nanchi (as a whole, no longer counting as "Gokagai") remain. I could not find out when Horie and Shinmachi were officially abolished as Hanamachi, but it was likely after 1988.

The highest number of Geiko and Maiko working in Kitashinchi was 500 (1935). The newest and also lowest number is six (2018). These six are, as far as I know, all elderly veteran Geiko. Two Maiko debuted in the late 2000's and became Geiko, but they have retired meanwhile. Time will tell if Kitashinchi recovers and stays active as a small Hanamachi, or if the veterans will all retire one after another, leaving Nanchi to be the last bastion of Geiko in Osaka.

"Kō-kun," you called with a raspy voice as soon as you heard his alarm going off. But instead of getting out of bed, he even pulled you closer to him and nuzzled his face into your neck before going back to sleep. "Kō-kun. . ."

“Five more minutes,” he whined while lying on top of you. "Wanna. . . 'pend more time wif my wife."

You shook your head as you run your fingers through his soft hair. "Your students will miss their Sugawara-sensei if you won't move soon," you teased, remembering the story he told you the other day. "Come on. I have to cook our breakfast too."

"It's too cold to take a bath," he whined. "Unless. . ."

You raised your eyebrow at what he was implying. "I. . . don't know."

"Hm?" he hummed with a mischievous grin. "Don't worry. I'll scrub your back," he teased before kissing your shoulder.

"Fine," you mumbled as if you were forced to do something you don't like. "As long as you promised that we won't take long."

"Trust me. We won't."

You slowly nodded in response. "Yeah. The last time I did, we were both scolded for being late." To which he chuckled in response. "It wasn't funny."

"It was!" he retorted before pausing to look into your eyes. "Good morning, my lovely wife."

"Morning old man."

"Old man? OLD MAN?"

TO CUT THE LONG BANTER SHORT, you two ended up making some quick breakfast just to feel your empty stomach before doing any of your tasks for the day.

sorry for answering this so late!

i think violet would dress relatively the same as we see her dress on screen. maybe we would see thicker leggings as well as solid undershirts instead of sheer ones. violet already wears lots of long sleeves and layering, i think she'd have a harder time adjusting her style to the summer heat (i know i do lol)

she does live in LA and so do i, and i have never needed a winter coat... it barely even rains here but i wanted to answer this ask fully so. i think violet would just have a solid color or simply patterned, almost trench coat-type jacket for the winter. she would wear it mostly just to protect her clothes underneath since i like to think she doesnt rlly care abt being cold. heres some pictures of what i had in mind :)
