SPACEMAS DAY 17 ✨🪐🌎☄️☀️🌕

The Ring Nebula (M57), is more complicated than it appears through a small telescope. The easily visible central ring is about one light-year across, but this remarkable exposure by the James Webb Space Telescope explores this popular nebula with an exposure in infrared light. Strings of gas, like eyelashes around a cosmic eye, become evident around the nebula in this digitally enhanced featured image in assigned colors. These long filaments may be caused by the shadowing of knots of dense gas in the ring from energetic light emitted within. The Ring Nebula is an elongated planetary nebula, a type of gas cloud created when a Sun-like star evolves to throw off its outer atmosphere to become a white dwarf star. The central oval in the Ring Nebula lies about 2,500 light-years away toward the musical constellation Lyra.

Lore/Head canons for the Martians in my new Duck Dodgers! Submas AU because the brain rot is STRONG rn. Tagging @r0-boat because it’s all her fault. Jkjk

- Martians and Earthlings have similar body structures and bodily functions, but the two are still VERY much different species.

- Martian skin is completely black. It’s theorized this might be a trait the Martians evolved to help survive the harsh, desert like, environment of Mars. On Mars, the days are scorching hot and the nights are freezing cold. Their black skin allows them to absorb heat during the day and then release it during the night, this allows them to stay warm during night night despite the freezing temperatures.

- Besides their black skin, Martians are best known for their faces, or lack thereof. The only distinctive facial features Martians have are a pair of eyes and eyebrows. Their eyes are wide and expressive, and it’s a strongly held belief by the Martians that eyes are the most beautiful part of the body. Because of this belief, it’s common for Martians to wear heavy eye makeup or anything that puts more emphasis on their eyes.

- Being that Martians have such strong feelings about eyes, Martians tend to avoid making direct eye contact with anyone besides close friends and family. For them, eye contact is a form of affection since it involves looking at what they deem to be the most beautiful part of the body. As such, making direct eye contact with a Martian you aren’t close with often results in an uncomfortable and offended Martian. For Martians, it’s the equivalent of walking up to a random stranger or another person you don’t know very well, and giving them a hug.

- To compensate for their lack of facial features, Martians rely more heavily on exaggerated movement and inflection to help convey their emotions. This has led to Martians often being viewed as overly dramatic, which yeah they kinda are…But still!

- Martians “kiss” by fluttering their eyelashes against each other in a butterfly kiss. It’s a very intimate action reserved solely for lovers.

- Because years on Mars are almost DOUBLE what an Earth year is, Martians age slower than humans do and also live almost twice as long as a result. They only age 1 year for every 2 Earth years, as an example if a human and Martian are born on the same day, it would take until the human turns 36 for the Martian to turn 18 despite being born at the same time.

- Martian blood is purple. Similarly to human blood, Martian blood appears brighter when oxygenated, and darker when deoxygenated.

- Despite their power and reputation, the Martian empire is actually relatively new. Having only been founded 75 Martian years ago, or 150 Earth years. Prior to the formation of the empire, the Martians lived in small groups that were often no bigger than 10 individuals. And these groups often had little to no contact with any other groups.

- The combination of the harsh Mars environment and the lack of a united front led let to a lot of the Martian population dying out. It got so bad at one point, extinction was a very real possibility. The once bleak future of the Martians however, unexpectedly changed forever when a particularly brilliant Martian named “Aurelius”, who studied Earth technology, managed to convince the remaining Martians to come together and make a better future for them all. Aurelius taught the other Martians what he’d learned on Earth, and they began building what would eventually become the planet’s capital. Aurelius went on to become the first King of Mars, and quickly began establishing a reputation for being one of the most calculated and brutal rulers the rest of galaxy had ever seen.

- King Aurelius was DETERMINED to make Mars a true force to be reckoned with, so he focused heavily on building up the Martian military and creating technology that would put them ahead of the game. He was never one to care much about relationships, and tended to be rather cold; Even to those he was close to. He never married either, believing love to be nothing more than a distraction, but he did sire a son with a Martian woman who he’d had a brief fling with. The little prince was named “Romulus”, and he eventually became the second King of Mars after Aurelius perished on the battlefield.

- King Romulus continued where his father left off, only faltering when he met a gladiatrix named “Ceres” and fell HARD for her. It was a bit of a whirlwind romance, but they were wed and Ceres became the first Queen of Mars. They went on to have a lovely baby girl, (Y/N), that they both adored.

- Despite his father own father being emotionally distant, King Romulus was a doting father who loved you with every fiber of his being, and he really did try to be a loving and present father to you. However being the King of an entire empire focused on galactic conquest means you don’t always have a lot of time for anything besides your royal duties.

- Unfortunately, you would find yourself being crowned as the Queen of Mars at the tender age of 14 after the untimely deaths of your parents, King Romulus and Queen Ceres. Orphaned and now having an entire empire looking to you for guidance despite only being a child, you had no other choice but to harden your heart and put on a brave face for your people. Lest the empire your family had worked so hard to build over the last 3 generations fall apart.

- King Aurelius was particularly fond of the ancient Egyptians and the Roman Empire, so a lot of the architecture on Mars, including the palace, takes a lot of inspiration from both of those time periods. The same goes for the clothing Martians wear.

- Gladiator fights are a popular spectator sport on Mars, those who do good in the arena can earn a lot of fame and fortune. The Martian army also sometimes recruits some of the better fighters if they’re good enough. Your father actually met your mother at the arena. Before marrying your father and becoming Queen, she was an extremely talented and famous Gladiatrix. They say your father fell in love the moment he saw her strike down an opponent for the first time.

My job has made a copyedit for a journal I manage due on 12/30 and only gotten the files to me today, annoying at the best of times but probably impossible in this weird nothing time when our one French copyeditor is almost definitely not going to see my request until New Year's.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!! These last 25 days have been so fun! Thank you for coming along with me!!

Majestic on a cosmic scale, M100 is known as a grand design spiral galaxy. It’s a large galaxy of over 100 billion stars with well-defined spiral arms that is similar to the Milky Way Galaxy. Also one of the brightest members of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies, M100 (aka NGC 4321) is 56 million light-years away toward the constellation of Berenice's Hair (Coma Berenices). This Hubble Space Telescope image of M100 was taken with the Wide Field Camera 3 and accentuates bright blue star clusters and intricate winding dust lanes which are hallmarks of this class of galaxies. Studies of variable stars in M100 have played an important role in determining the size and age of the Universe.
