Seeing the total eclipse today was one of the most amazing things I've witnessed in my life for quite a few reasons, and one of the best moments was smack in the middle of the totality, when my entire friend group was going "do you see that red dot along the edge? What is that? Is that a solar flare? Those can't be visible, right?" [brief frantic googling] "HOLY CRAP THAT'S A SOLAR FLARE!!!"
As it turns out, coronal ejections are in fact visible during a total eclipse when the corona is showing; we couldn't make out any individual strands like a telescope would be able to, but it was still visible to the naked eye!
you guys science is so fucking cool and absolutely fucked up. we know so little about space, but it’s still more than we know about the deep oceans. glowing cats are a thing people made (whilst trying to protect against feline AIDS, no less). Space is fucktupling by the second. Have you ever seen Pluto’s orbit around the sun. We’ve launched shit into space that we’re never getting back. I love science so fucking much. I’m such a nerd. this was removed from tumbrl due to “violating one or more of Tumblr’s Community Guidelines”, but since my wish came true the first time, I’m putting it back. :)
Petition to stop normies from commenting on any and all spaceflight related videos on youtube. New technology, even if it's the less-than-stellar SLS, is not 50 year old technology. Physics is the limiting factor, not engineering. Columbia was not going to be recoverable, stop acting like it was. Yes, there's dubious points about the touchscreen controls of Crew Dragon, but it's not a shuttle, it's a capsule, it has no atmospheric flight/gliding capability. The shuttle was a project more driven by continued Cold War military needs than actual spaceflight ideas, it was not some peak of technological innovation to never be matched ever again (sts was beyond lifespan and outdated AF by retirement).
Unless you understand these points, kindly keep your self-assured opinions that you could do better to yourself.
