Only 1 woman of color has won the Oscar for Best Leading Actress in 95 years. Halle Berry for Monster’s Ball in 2002, 21 years ago. 14 Black women, one child of color have been nominated in 95 years. Numbers don’t lie. 1954- Dorothy Dandridge for Carmen Jones. 1972- Cicely Tyson for Sounder. 1972- Diana Ross for Lady Sings the Blues. 1974- Diahann Carroll for Claudine. 1985- Whoopi Goldberg for The Color Purple. 1993- Angela Bassett for What’s Love Got to Do with It. 2001- Halle Berry for Monster’s Ball. 2009- Gabourey Sidibe for Precious. 2011- Viola Davis for The Help. 2012- Quvenzhane Wallis for Beasts of the Southern Wild. 2016- Ruth Negga for Loving. 2019- Cynthia Erivo for Harriet. 2020- Andra Day for The United States vs. Billie Holliday. 2020- Viola Davis for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The fact, Chinonye Chukwu’s beautifully made, historically relevant and important film, Till and The Woman King got no nominations speaks volumes. Till about a mother whose horrific loss sparked the civil rights movement. Representation matters, and the Academy failed again to recognize powerful Black female lead films with uncomfortable truths. #oscars2023 #lackofrepresentation #till #chinonyechukwu #dorothydandridge #carmenjones #cicelytyson #sounder #dianaross #ladysingstheblues #diahanncarroll #claudine #whoopigoldberg #thecolorpurple #angelabassett #whatslovegottodowithit #halleberry @halleberry #gaboureysidibe #precious @violadavis #violadavis #quvenzhanéwallis #beastsofthesouthernwild @iamquvenzhane #ruthnegga #loving #cynthiaerivo @cynthiaerivo #harriet #andraday #theusvsbillieholiday #violadavis #maraineysblackbottom #danielledeadwylersnubbed https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn2BYEru8Jw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

sounder (1972) feel free to change as needed.
give me that lamp.
come on, sonny, let’s go.
if anybody’s to blame, it’s me.
i bet you you’re tired.
you had a rough time out there tonight.
when the night comes in these parts, that old moon runs like a scared rabbit.
time to get to bed, son.
i bet you could use a hot cup of coffee.
we’ve been through these hard times before, and we made it.
there’s meat cooking on the stove.
go wash up. be snappy about it.
tuck that shirt in.
you come straight on home, you hear?
i got that book i promised you.
to this very day, i don’t know how i ever got out of there alive.
critters in the woods better hide tonight.
i was sort of expecting you this morning.
i’d like to help you, but that wouldn’t do anything but get us both in trouble.
you’ve got a low-life job.
dammit, i’m talking to you!
stop asking crazy questions.
i’m fixing to bake a cake.
it sure is good to see you.
do like i tell you.
i’d rather be fishing.
you can’t blame a girl for trying!
it’s a damn shame.
god works in mysterious ways.
i’ll ask around town about it.
did you find what you were looking for?
i don’t know a damn thing. now stop bothering me about it.
don’t pout.
i’m sorry about the way i acted the other day.
hey, i’ll race you to that tree stump.
alright, now get a move on. you’re losing daylight.
it’s a good thing that this hand did not become infected. how did you hurt it like this?
you’ve got a pretty house.
it’s getting late and you have a long day ahead of you in the morning.
you think about your father a lot, don’t you?
not many little boys could have gone on such a journey as you did.
boy, you sure keep my mind jumping!
you had me worried out of my mind!
it’s two hours past your bedtime.
you’re home. that’s all i want.
what does that old peckerwood want now?
they’d have to kill me before i’d go back to that place.
i don’t wanna hear nothing more out of you.
you are going straight to bed for the way you’ve acted.
can i talk to you for a minute, son?
i want you to beat the life they got all laid out for you.
i love you. don’t ever think that i don’t love you.
alright, now, you be good, and you be smart, young man.
i’m gonna miss this old raggedy place, but i sure ain’t gonna worry about it.
i think i really could have made it in the big leagues.

The Homeward Bound movie was one of my favourites growing up any suggestions based on that one?
That's a tricky one, because a lot of the movies that feature animals and are for adults often lean into horror, which is a whole different tone than Homeward Bound! Instead, I'll focus on the themes of survival, going on a journey, dealing with nature, emotional connections, and a sense of triumph. Some of these are more about the human protagonists rather than animals, but the vibe is still there! It's actually much easier to list movies that are similar to Homeward Bound and still at the same tone with being OK for kids, but here are some movies from my personal collection that give me a similar feeling to Homeward Bound!
Movies about survival, nature, emotional journeys, and triumph-
Life of Pi (2012)
Sounder (1972)
White Fang (1991)
Wild (2014)
Flight of the Phoenix (2004)
Whale Rider (2002)
Thanks for asking~

Sounder (USA, 1972): 🙂 [2020]
Uma família afro-americana pobre vive em um pequeno sítio no período da Grande Depressão. A ajudá-los nesta difícil caminhada, está sempre presente o fiel companheiro Sounder, discutivelmente o cachorro com o latido mais irritante da história do cinema.

"Melinda" (1972) is an action-crime-drama directed by Hugh A. Robertson, who was the editor of the 1971 classic, "Shaft." This movie features Calvin Lockhart in the prime of his acting career, and his screen presence is as ever dominant. In addition, one of the most underrated actresses from the 70s, Vonetta McGee, appears in the film as Melinda. This movie was McGee's 7th film, and she had already garnered some success from films like "Blacula," "The Lost Man," and "The Great Silence." Afterward, she continued her lucrative career in several Hollywood movies with many versatile roles.
Trivia Question: Which other male actors played alongside Vonetta McGee?
"Melinda" is an excellent movie with a solid cast. The film's writer, Lonne Elder III, is also responsible for writing the prolific movie "Sounder." He also has two hard-to-find films we seek: "Ceremonies in Dark Old Men" (1975) and "Sounder, Part 2" (1976). Both films were T.V. movies. Elder also had a role in "Melinda" as Lt. Daniels.
Jerry Peters and Jerry Butler are responsible for producing the film's soundtrack. It's a good mix of funk and soul, with mostly instrumentation throughout the album. It's definitely above average, so make sure you listen to it. You will not be disappointed.
"Melinda," while not one of the most celebrated black films from the 1970s, still deserves recognition as a good film. It checks off most of the components of an ideal movie. I recommend this movie for viewing.
Director: Hugh A. Robertson Writers: Lonne Elder III (screenplay by), Raymond Cistheri (story by)
Starring Calvin Lockhart, Rosalind Cash, Vonetta McGee, Paul Stevens, Jim Kelly, Rockne Tarkington, Renny Roker, Lonne Elder, Ross Hagen, Jan Tice
Storyline Frankie J. Parker (Calvin Lockhart), a smooth-talking disk jockey, finds Melinda Lewis (Vonetta McGee) brutally murdered in his L.A. apartment. He turns detective to clear his name. Chased and attacked by junkies, dealers, and thugs, Frankie soon learns Melinda is the ex-mistress of a Chicago mobster and has evidence the gangster wants back. Enlisting the aid of a jealous ex-flame (Rosalind Cash) and a karate master from the hood (Jim Kelly, in his screen debut), Frankie sets out to track down the mob boss who framed him and avenge Melinda's death.
