Audio Drama Sunday - 14th Jan ✨
Oh, friends, I have had a shit week but these listens have definitely gone some way to making it bearable. Happy Audio Drama Sunday 🎧
👻 @tellnotalespod oh how I love you and how I have missed you!! It seems that some time has passed since the end of S1 and Leo has OBVIOUSLY made absolutely stellar choices in the meantime. Nothing is better for one’s mental health than isolation and trusting the slimiest creature on god’s green earth.
🦀 @thesiltverses (37) my beloved Silt Verses have returned with a frankly exceptional HOUR long episode filled with so many things to scream about that I don’t even know where to start. Val’s revelation that extreme power can also be used to bring people joy is VERY interesting indeed. They were never going to be able to control her, but I doubt it even more now. And PAIGE stepping up!! Part of me really wants a Val vs Paige stand off but most of me wants to protect Paige at all costs… I am loving the music choices this episode and the scene with the telephone calls was so good! Also, PLEASE stop foreshadowing Carpenter’s death, I am going ‘lalalalalala I can’t hear you!!’
🧳 I listened to episode 8 of Travelling Light by @monstrousproductions after a night shift and the hazy tiredness only served to make it even more transcendentally beautiful. I adore the blossoming friendships aboard the Tola, especially between the Traveller and Óli 😭🌌
👁️ @malevolentcast (39) I love it when you can *feel* that an episode is gearing up to a season finale, a few little loose strands tied up here and there but one BIG problem looming for the finale. I NEED to remember to not listen to this show when I’m emotionally compromised in any way because I found myself bloody sobbing as Marie was talking about her son. I should know that Malevolent is going to play dirty with my emotions.
🏛 @the-mistholme-museum ENDLESS okay I don’t want to ruin this for anyone who hasn’t listened yet but !!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!! and !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! let’s go!!!!!!!!!!!
🐬 @patterspod P Files brought creative levity into our lives with the tale of Professor Fantabulum. I’m honestly a huge fan of the idea of creative genius as a torch passed on to the people who you inspire
🌨️ @thewhitevault (5) Oh I just don’t trust this guy at all. . . everything he says is so perfectly plausible that there’s just obviously something wrong with him. My friend pointed out that the family meeting mentioned surveyors . . . . .  Now S has been killed by something . . . . I just adore the way The White Vault slowly ramps up the cosmic kind of horror but you’re so distracted by all the other scary human shit going on that your brain is primed and ready to be terrified by the obviously fictional stuff by the time it happens. It’s such clever writing!!
❤️‍🔥 The Love Talker (6) Ah, now, Ren…. Just because you *can* do something, doesn’t meant necessarily mean that you should… you feel me? Some of the anatomical descriptions in this episode made me want to vomit a little. It’s so awful, I need to know what happens next!!
🏢 @somewhereohio (S2E5) I’m absolutely living for these scenes with Green and Sterling. Are they squishing my heart into pieces? Yes. Do I feel sick to my stomach thinking about the impossibility of trying to perfect and control the one you love? Yes. Can I have more, please?
🍾 I finished season 1 of @ameliapodcast and what an absolute DELIGHT that ending was!! What an absolutely masterful raising of the stakes at just the right moment in time to keep the listener absolutely hooked. I hope Tara and Lily come back one day, they were so much fun and I think will be even more fun as free agents!
🌫️ @souloperatorpod dropped this week and the first episode is very intriguing indeed! I think I need to relisten without any distractions if I want to stand a chance of collecting all the threads of red string I’m going to need for this show! I really love the theme music and am very excited for more!
♦️ The Grotto continues to be an absolutely WILD delight. I caved and listened to two episodes this week but it’s okay because I still have ep 4 in my back pocket. I love the music, the sound design, the fact that it is literally impossible to work out what the hell is going to happen next. Go listen to The Grotto!!
Thanks to everyone making art - it makes things better 💓 I’m so excited for @camlannpod next week!!

Here are my completely honest thoughts on a bunch of audio dramas I've checked out. (Don't worry, nothing scathing, they're all reasonably good. But please proceed with caution, or don't proceed, if you're involved in creating any of these shows.)
In the order I first listened:
The Storage Papers: Nine episodes in. A little slow paced, but I've heard it picks up in the later seasons. My only real concern is that it seems like a lot of the horror revolves around "this thing looks sort of like a human but it's Wrong somehow. also it kills people (or cats)." I hope at some point we meet a creature that looks and acts as unsettling as the Grinner but is nice, or at least complicated.
The Cellar Letters: Seven episodes in. I LOVE it. I love the natural-feeling messiness of it, the way Nate and Steve talk in circles and go back and forth on what to believe. It's made me laugh out loud multiple times. I can't wait to learn more about that weird little room full of letters with that one random word written on the wall (I forget what).
400 Words a Horror: Three episodes in. I had to re-listen to the first episode because I hadn't been paying enough attention, but I think that particular episode rewards re-listening anyway. Also it is the only show on this list that genuinely frightens me so I have to pace myself. Very good.
Tin Can Audio Presents: Middle:Below: Two episodes in. I won't say I'm hooked, but I am somewhat interested. It's a lot more relaxing than the other podcasts on this list, so I keep thinking I'll save it for listening closer to bedtime, then not getting around to it.
The Grotto: Six episodes in. Very much enjoying. I was SO proud of myself for correctly guessing the twist in the second episode. I love the characters and am extremely intrigued by the mysteries. My only criticism is that the musical interludes drag on too long. And I'm saying that as a WOE.BEGONE fan.
Soul Operator: Three episodes in. It's good but there isn't any particular element that's drawing me in just yet. There's a lot I don't know about the world yet, though, so there is still plenty of time for me to fall in love with this show. (Irrelevant note: I always get "Smooth Operator" by Sade stuck in my head when I think about this show.)
Shadows at the Door: Listened to half of the first episode. It was somewhat interesting, but I decided I had higher priorities for my listening time than disconnected hour-long episodes that are only *somewhat* interesting.
Archive 81: Five episodes in. Quite possibly going to become a major obsession. It's got everything: playing with point of view; the Power of Storytelling but in a menacing way; vivid character voices; probably a cult. I particularly love the way conversations play out on this show--I don't know exactly how to explain it but there's a certain... friction that happens in real conversations but rarely in fictional ones outside cringe comedy. I don't usually enjoy that sort of thing when it's played for laughs, but for realism or suspense? I eat that up. It does make me a little tense so this is another show I pace myself with and I'm glad the episodes are short.
Alice Isn't Dead: Two episodes in. I'm not going to make it a priority--it's got a similar sort of surrealism to Night Vale, but with higher stakes and less humor, and I had enough trouble getting immersed in Night Vale. I could probably enjoy it if I gave it enough time, but for now I'd rather focus on *gestures at some of the shows above*
The Silt Verses: Listened to the first ten minutes of the first episode and got bored, which I think says as much about me as it does about the show. It does get off to a bit of a slow start and leaves more space between lines of dialogue than most of these shows do, but I could probably get into it with adequate time and sleep. Not prioritizing it, for similar reasons to Alice.

I know how I mostly reblog popular audio drama stuff. Because I love and adore it, yeah
but also? my brain is full of smallest stories being amazing.
While my own post is. less. in the sea of Everything I love about that medium…
I do appreciate and give all the stars to every podcast that make my soul sing.
This space is very divergent and yet I don’t feel like an outsider anywhere
All the warm and fuzzy feeling but horrific monstrous stories being directly told in my ears
(yup I can’t add more tags but I do give my heart to more indie podcasts to live there)

SHOWS OUR CHARACTERS WOULD LISTEN TO 1. MICAH
Tumblr media
@thesoftboileddetectivepodcast Because Micah would love to pretend they're in a detective noir and get into all the mysteries. @theatticmonologues I like to think Micah would relate to Nyx and they'd find comfort in another sad enby narrator. @souloperatorpod Okay Micah just loves narrators and an underlying sense of horror. Especially something with the weirdness of Soul Operator season one.

I cant sleep so we're gonna talk about the new @souloperatorpod episode right now!! There will be spoilers as there always are but short review: I'm gonna commit acts of cartoon violence against a fictional character
Let's get started!
Let's start off on a positive which is that I love John-Michael Cassidy with my whole heart he's just a cowboy and he's great 🤠. 10/10 no one is doing it like him. I also really like Sandra but I do not fucking trust her. She's got a soothing an authoritative voice, milf energy for days, and so many secrets I'm sure of it. Why must Tot make me distrust a milf? Truly unfair. Also putting Tessa basically on public trial to make an example of her? Absolutely bullshit and even more reason not to trust Sandra idk what she's hiding but she IS
Fuck Austin. All my homies hate Austin. Where did he even come from? He's talking about how Tessa isn't part of the neighborhood but mate I have never heard of you before in my life you truly showed up just to be an antagonist and I will commit acts of cartoon violence. Especially for the slut shaming of Tessa and Nates friendship like yes I am a Tessa has 2 hands truther but that doesn't mean she's fucking these people! I love that Nate came to Tessa's defense and I love that John-Michael Cassidy got to punch Austin in the face.
I love you, John-Michael Cassidy.
Moving on in the episode I personally am never going to forgive Tot for Nate and Tessa's argument because that shit HURT TOT! I know I said you could do whatever you want forever but OUCH MAN WHY DID YOU DO THAT. Nate saying "You promised" before leaving BROKE ME. Mike LeBeau is delivering 10/10 voice acting as he always does but also Mike please my heart can't take it. Following that up with Tessa and Anisha talking and Anisha trying to her Tessa to understand why and how she fucked up I'm still screaming about it. Just. The whole vibe of it is Tessa thinking she's expendable and Nate and Anisha trying to prove to her she's not through caring for her in different ways and TESSA HAS TWO HANDS GODDAMMIT Tot I'm gnawing on these characters I love them so much
A fun fact for anyone who hasn't listened to Soul Operator yet: you can get through everything that's currently out in roughly 2 hours. We did a group listen in the The Grotto discord and it wasn't all that long so if you're looking for something short and amazing to sink your teeth into then you gotta check out Soul Operator it's so fucking good
I'm not just annoying about it because I promised Tot I would be, it truly is a phenomenal show and I would be annoying about it with or without promises PLEASE listen to Soul Operator its good for you

AUDIO DRAMA SUNDAY: RECENT LISTENS
Just wanted to quickly start off by saying thank you and welcome to everyone who's started following and listening to our show this week- the love has been amazing!!!! New show listen first:
SOUL OPERATOR
I've recently binged what's currently out of this show and I love hearing about all the different languages and people. The mystery is interesting and the music always fits the vibe! I always find interest in memory loss and amnesia in shows especially when it comes with such a nosey narrator. Also, the cover art has Lofi vibes and is so beautiful.
HELLO FROM THE HALLOWOODS (RECAP EP)
I'll admit I used to listen to this show when it first started coming out but fell behind over a year ago. My ADHD doesn't always follow long narration shows so the recap of the first 3 seasons was so helpful! If you know anything about me, it's that I love in-universe ads especially when they're horror based so I'm happy to be able to jump into the show into a more recent point! The recap was so helpful and it's been nice to hear William's voice again.

Started playing "welcome to the habitrails" because of the soul operator podcast, i think I started kinda badly because I pulled the emperor and one royal of wands, so the choice was be blackmailed by a self appointed sheriff or start the horrors™ on the first day

soul operator ep 5
I LOVE BEING RIGHT
okay so this episode confirmed the theory i've held since episode one.
Tessa is actually being “operated” in a sense of the world. Since the podcast is based on solo ttrpgs, it stood to reason that Tessa is the character being played, and she is put through the world by someone. the Operator of her Soul, so to speak.
AND WE PRETTY MUCH HAVE CONFIRMATION OF THAT SO. YOU KNOW.

Man, Soul Operator really said "You know what Mike LeBeau needs? To play another horror podcast character who lost his little brother."

Audio Drama Sunday - 11th February ✨
Here’s what I’ve been listening to this week 🎧
Spoilers ahead!
👻 @tellnotalespod (S2E3) I don’t get Frank’s game here. I don’t trust for a single second that he’s stopped doing those awful experiments. Constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop with Mr Williamson 🤨 And, yes, Leo 😭 continue choosing kindness in the face of stress and grief!! It’s all we can do!!!!
🧳 Travelling Light @monstrousproductions (11) sometimes I see so much of myself represented in The Traveller, it’s uncanny. I love singing little songs on the way home from a night out. If someone gave me a lovely little drum, you best believe I’m about to be the biggest menace in the star system!!! My heart swelled to three times its size upon hearing that Óli chose to join them for the evening! Love is stored in the haughty alien companion!! 💓
🏛 @the-mistholme-museum (MUNDANE) This episode had me cackling at Belinda and has had me looking at my toaster a little differently 👀 I loved the complex emotions at play here between ATG and the Beast. If you’re waiting for proof that you can trust the Beast, you’re gonna be waiting a looong time!!
🌨️ @thewhitevault (7) Iffy!!! Trust your gut!!!!!! All is not as it seems!!! This season is shaping up to be just as gut wrenching as the others and I’m enjoying the ride immensely!
🏢 @somewhereohio (S2E10) I can’t believe it’s over! What a weird, wild and wormy ride this season has been. Roll on the final season!
🍾 @ameliapodcast “A MAI TAI IS AN INTERNATIONAL DELIGHT!” Had me CREASED. I’m very much enjoying season three so far!
🌫️ @souloperatorpod (3) Soul Operator is getting creepier by the episode and I’m so here for it! What happened at the end there?! Who’s going around sending bear traps in the post?!!
🖥️ The Magnus Protocol (5) oooh I think this one was my favourite story yet. I love the shift into what seems to be entirely digital “statements” in this show and they nailed the secondhand embarrassment from those early blog posts.
🍎 I finished season one of the dazzling Not Quite Dead (@notquitedeadpod) and have started season two. I can’t quite express how much I love this show. The acting is so natural and it makes the whole thing so much more believable. I don’t quite understand why Eira isn’t in absolutely every audio drama ever? He’s amazing. ALFIE, though, GOD. MY SWEET BOY. WHO, EXACTLY, DO YOU THINK CASPER WAS TELLING YOU TO RUN FROM? This show makes me sick, I love it.
So excited for more Camlann next week, and to dive deeper into the mess that is Not Quite Dead this week!! What is everyone else enjoying? 👀

From the website:
Soul Operator is a multi-genre, multi-season podcast that can be described as an actual play-narrative fusion. The podcast was created with the intention of highlighting amazing solo ttrpgs that exist in the space by presenting their gameplay as a fleshed out story. Follow Tessa Whitlock as she navigates these new and interesting worlds, for better or for worse.

Husk having once been an Overlord makes so much sense when you look at his character design. The Overlords are the sinners who own the most souls. They also have visual theming that communicates what their entire "deal" is. Carmilla is made of steel and points and she sells weapons. Valentino looks like a pimp and works in the porn industry. Alastor is a radio host. Presumably their jobs and specialties (or simple conquest) is also where they get most of the souls they own, like Valentino with Angel Dust.
But there's a gap in the line-up. Gambling. There's no Overlord with an obvious gambling motif like Husk has. Out of all the exploitative industries where people could end up signing their very souls away, gambling seems like the most obvious. So as the only character who looks like they could be running a bunch of casinos where people go so broke they end up betting their souls, which Hell has to have, it fits Husk very well.
