I've been really enjoying the 911 costume meta you put together every week and it's been super interesting! I've even caught myself watching other stuff and noticing costume that's sort of foregrounded and wondering what kind of significance it has.

And I'm curious about your process! How much of the sort of "language" of meanings are generally agreed upon in costuming vs put together by the show's costumers - like is checks signifying change a universal thing or something that developed over seasons? And I feel like you must have a spreadsheet with everyone's costumes (or an incredible memory), I'm always impressed by the recall to prior episodes (not a skill I have lol). (Sorry if you've answered these before! I only found your meta breakdowns this season)

I'm so so sorry that this has taken me an age to get round to answering, especially as its such a good ask, but I am happy that you've started noticing costume related things in other shows!

So each show/ piece of media will create its own themes etc that it plays on - 911 is doing this with check and stripes more generally and then Buck being in white is a more character specific meaning. The thing with check is that it is by nature a pattern that has lots of crossings in it - that makes it a perfect metaphor for change - for being at a crossroads as it were, so its one that tends to get used more frequently and as a result is becoming a specific language in its own right. Thats how many of these costume languages and meanings develop - they either deliberately or inadvertently get used in one or two things to convey a message and then spiral from there into a specific meaning that becomes a trope in its own right. its like a costume version of knowing the person who goes off alone in a horror movie is going to die!

As for colours - there is a lot more in this - the meanings of different colours is something that has been around since before film existed - its been around for centuries, it is worth noting that different cultures apply different meanings to colours - red for example has a different meaning in Chinese culture than it does in western culture - so its always important to keep that in mind when watching something regardless of where it comes from - because a good designer will make use of these differences if they are dressing someone from a different background. When I did my degree in costume design, we had specific lectures and seminars on colour theory and in analysing its use in various media (they were my favourite classes 😎) because it is important to understand so that you can better tell the story you're trying to tell.

Much colour theory is known by your subconscious and most people go through life completely unaware that colour is affecting decisions they make - its something advertisers use to their advantage!

I like to think I have an incredible memory 😂 and I kind of do - it remembers most things (usually it recalls a costume but cant remember exactly which episode it appeared in!), but you're right - I do have a spreadsheet (well I have one for each main and one for guest cast!) with all the costumes listed - its a full costume plot andis based on the plots I used to create when I worked in the industry! It has time stamps, reference pictures and is colour coded for type of costume and if its connected to a theme - its a bit geeky of me but I love doing it!

The first thing I do before I start writing my meta is a rewatch where I fill out all costume details for the episode and add the reference pictures! Maybe I'll share it with everyone during the summer hiatus, but then again maybe that would be one step too far!!!

The tape "Incident 84" probably is a original copy of the show and contains the last episode of the original Sunny Day Jack, aka the one where Jack died/killed (was shot?) while filming. Everything directs that after said incident the producers tried to bury all clues related to it to protect themselves.

(In Jambeebot's drawings there was one with two formers actors of the show in what it seemed an interview or talking with someone who was asking them about the incident and the woman said they didn't let them hold a funeral for Joseph/Jacktor. AND in this drawing his grave seemed improvised God knows where by someone who knew him, no grave per se just a which further proves he didn't get a proper funeral and only the people who worked in the show knew he died at the age 25 under turbulent circumstances.)

So that tape was the only existing one that proved his death/murder, the person who kept it died and somebody donate their things or they get rid of it themselves and that's why Jack was trapped in there.

After all, it contained his death, but also the last moments of his life and who killed him or why he died. The first element his soul could cling to this realm, well, before you.

Did you know he was once in a Polycule with Zatanna Zatara and Nick Necro? now there was a lot of sketchy things about this relationship, mainly the fact Nick was a teacher of the Magical Arts to both John and Zee, but they had all grown together and even become a three person Coven. Matching tattoos and everything.

So their Polycule was quite literally this meme:

But Nick was obsessed with greater power and magic to the point of taking more and more risks, upsetting both Zee and John, to the point were both wanted out of the Polycule and to leave together, only to get caught kissing each other by Nick who pulled a "I KNEW YOU'D DOUBLE-CROSS ME J O H N."

And was kinda upset John stole their girl away but he was more interested in dark magic by this point.

Nick was a jealous ex for a bit before he got involved in Cultists of the Cold Flame, something the three once fought against.

Nick sided with the Cultists for power and planned to sell Zee out to them and send John to Hell.

But John is nothing if not a tricky bastard.

As an Cultist goes to stab John, he uses Nick as a shield and in turn, Nick is killed, his soul begs John to save him but John is like "Lol no."

In many canons this is how John got his brown Coat, he took it from his dead teacher and ex lover and took it as his own, reclaiming it and telling Nick to get fucked even in death.

Ok! So like, they just have so much interesting potential as a couple. Fave ship of all time, it feels so fun and poetic, it works with different types of fun dynamics like rivals/lovers or vigilante x criminal for example. My own headcanon though just has them meeting during the prime empire final, helping civilians get to safety before splitting off then officially being introduced to each other by the ninja a bit later. Mostly cuz in my rewrite Ronin has undergone more growth, but in show canon Ronin's never actually shied away from helping innocent bystanders during disaster so honestly still a pretty plausible way for them to meet. There's also just something so appealing about masterless samurai from 2 different worlds meeting and falling in love. Not to mention the antics that come out of someone new to the real world trying to romance someone who's been hardened by it. Like, Okino gets all his love and flirting advice from Kai and really cheesy romance films. The plot twist being: Ronins actually super into that, give that man a bouquet of roses with with little foam hearts in it and he'll be thinking about you for the next week. I can also imagine both he and Okino are pretty touch starved, having not come from particularly affectionate places. So when they do eventually become a couple they show a lot of physical affection. For example, Okino would do things like gently kissing the back of Ronins non mechanical hand to make sure he feels it.

Thats kind of everything I can think about at the moment. Thank you for the ask!

Good morning! I will eventually send one for each mech because this is very fun. Here's what I wrote for ashes, it ended up as a mini fic;

Ashes is probably the best mech to hug. But you never see ashes hug anyone. Sometimes during crew nights you'll see them on the couch with jonny or tim or sometimes even Nastya snuggled up against their side, and their arms hanging on the back of the couch. But you never see them go out of their way to hug someone.

One night on the aurora, you found yourself unable to sleep. No amount of shifting around, listening to music or asmr, heating pads, blankets, weighted blankets, or counting sheep seemed to help. Tears of frustration prick your eyes as you get out of bed, throwing the blankets aside in a quiet rage. Rubbing your eyes, you stagger into the halls of the Aurora, out towards the kitchen in hopes that a cup of warm tea would soothe your soul. You stand alone, lit in the dim light the aurora turned on when she heard you approach. As you're reaching for a mug on a rather high shelf, someone behind you speaks.

"Can't sleep?"

Ashes O'Reilly is standing right behind you, watching as you jump out of your skin, nearly dropping the mug. You turn to face them, watching as they give you a once over. You don't need to say anything, they know your answer. With a small sigh, they nod, and open their arms.

"C'mon."

No other words were spoken as you abandon the mug you were about to grab, shuffling over and wrapping your arms around them. The first thing you notice is how *warm* they are, and you can't help but sink into their embrace. One hand rests on your head, warm fingers carding through your hair as their other hand gently rubs your back. They sway, not in the way Marius and Raphaella do when they're needing to stim in some way, no. Ashes sways soothingly, mentally trying to comfort you into a sleepier state. Something left over from their time in the orphanage, helping other kids find comfort and rest when the realities of life kept them up. You aren't sure how long the two of you stood in the kitchen, and youre barely conscious enough to realize when youre suddenly picked up like a small child. You can only piece together what's happened when you wake in ashes' arms the next morning, draped in their black silken sheets, laying on a circular mattress.

"huh.." You think, looking at the bed you now lay in. "Must be from their Hades days."

Youre not sure why that thought feels so right. But you don't care, really, as their arm is slung over your middle, keeping you safe and warm.
