tumblr tips & things!

after growing rlly fast, i just wanted to provide some maybe helpful tips + things you could do if you’re a smaller blog! i am in no means an expert, I am still learning but this is what i’ve learned, specifically abt the mcyt tumblr community

disclaimer you DO NOT have to follow these, these are what ive learned and my opinion, but i think most writers can agree on this

its a lot of info im sorry ajdba but feel free to reblog and add ur own info!

1. tags!

theyre superrr important if you want exposure for your works + writing pieces, just make sure to tag accordingly

meaning: do not cross tag, or main tag, (ex do not tag just dream alone) keep ‘x reader’ content under the ‘x reader tags’

^people get uncomfortable with x readers and sometimes they slip through the filtered tags

my go-tos for tags are mcyt or cc name then the following prefixes- x reader, x y/n, x you, fanfic, fanfiction

if you have a fic for dream, DO NOT TAG george, it makes it confusing

also tags for ur random posts r super helpful because if someone doesnt want to see it, they can filter it out (my talking tag is basilly blabs)

adding a tag for the ppl you interact for! i like doing this cuz i can easily search a tag on my blog to see my prev interactions w/ them (ex. if i interact w/ userA then i tag userA’s username)

2. create some sort of brand

of course u can switch it up, but using ur own theme makes ur work recognizable to others

like mine is my banner- i use it on every of my works + important posts, so ppl can recognize me

banners can be found on the internet or twitter (but pls credit the artist w/ permission) i found mine on google

for super thin page dividers, i use ibis paint (mobile app) and made a super thin canvas (3405x57) and filled it w/ my theme color

3. plspls dont beat yourself up for rejecting requests or feeling uncomfortable

you are not forced to write requests, if they make you feel uncomfortable you can decline

also if you’re not happy with the work, you can spend the time to revise + edit, we will wait for work you are happy with!

+ if you are stuck with some details on writing smth, ask a mutual or others! more brains and more ideas!

4. same goes for writers block & health issues

we all get it sometimes, no one is pressuring you and if they are, its your blog, you decide. and your health matters more

5. the mcyt tumblr community is SUPER NICE

if u wanna be moots aka mutuals (follow each other) literally shoot them any message and they’ll respond so kindly

ive talked to so many incredible moots who I absolutely adore theyre so kind

also interacting w/ moots: they can reblog your work, creating exposure but do not expect reblogs, and same to you we are not expected to reblog

6. please check a cc’s boundaries before writing

@/smp-boundaries has a majority listed, and if not, ask!

7. if u have any questions, just ask!

lots of ppl will not even mind that much, like i said theyre super kind

8. navigation + masterlists!!

super important for everyone to see your rules, works, all put into one spot, it makes it 10x easier

9. backup ur works + asks

tumblr can be glitchy so its always helpful to back up works on google docs or smth similar

having ur whole fic deleted is not fun and demotivating

asks can be backed up by sending them to ur linked email- this has helped loads for me

10. dont worry too much abt likes + follows

all blogs start out small and as you go and keep persisting, ppl will start noticing + following, its all abt perseverance + trust the process

even when fics r rllllyy good, tumblr has its own bad days and u get low notes- dont let this discourage you

11. anonymous asks!

some ppl get nervous and request on anon! personally think theres more requests that way

12. small text or read mores!

internet is a great help w/ this and itll give you guides and step by step instructions

mobile also is a lot harder to make an aesthetic blog, so a laptop or pc or chromebook is super helpful

13. for max notes, post at ‘prime times’

i think the queue tells u when the prime time is to post for ur time zone, but also a google search is super helpful

or, guess and check! trial and error- i did this and found the best time to post for me

once you find it, you can schedule or queue your work so it posts for you!

14. if there’s sensitive topics pls add TW and CW

as writers yes we try to cover some topics that ppl request but we dont want to trigger others, so at the top include TW// (trigger warning) or CW// (content warning) and add a cut or read more

do not put CW or TW on content creators- no matter how bad they are, its rude and dehumanizing

15. Formatting is SUPER important!

if you do not separate your lines of dialogue or paragraphs, chances are people WILL skip over it. it makes it hard to read and sometimes it is’t worth people’s time

rule of thumb is make a new paragraph every time someone speaks and indicate who is talking or make is distinguishable!

if your fic is over 500 words, id add a cut as well! if you dont know how:

on mobile: type :readmore: in a new paragraph and hit enter w/out a space after the readmore

pc/laptop: new paragraph, three dots far right

Smut also def has its own set of rules but i am not a nsfw blog- main things i can say is please add cuts and check for cc’s boundaries

thats all i have for now,,, i might add in the future!

not everyone’s experiences are the same but this is whats worked and happened for me and what i found to be useful, i hope this helps you as well, if it doesnt, thats fine too!

This is gonna be long, so sorry in advance, but as someone who enjoys long fics here are my two cents:

I get why some ppl may not want 75 tags in fics, but this is gonna hurt long fic writers. On a long fic there are probably gonna be more relationships that are central to the plot that aren't the main ship. And side pairings that may be a squick to some ppl. Not to mention trigger warnings and tone tags.

For example: a long fic with the pairing Y x Z. Z had an abusive relationship, and that's gonna be explored. So the author tags abusive relationship, bc that's a trigger, but an explanation next tag saying "not current ship" or smth.

Then Y has very important friendships with some of the cast. These are central to the plot so they're tagged too.

Turns out, character W is controversial in the fandom, but they're central to the fic too. The author is gonna tag after the character tag W positive/negative; so ppl who don't wanna see positive/negative things about W can skip this.

And guess what? Ship A x B appears in this fic too. Maybe it's not that central, but this ship is also disliked by some people, so the author will tag it, so ppl can filter through.

Another problem is with media that has different mediums, like, the media Y, Z, etc are from has movies, and books, and games and a tv show. All these things actually have different stories, different enough at least that ppl may only want to see fics written for the movies! But the author wants to take plot from the movies and the books. So instead of just tagging the all media tag for that media, they also tag media (movies) and media (books)

These tags end up accumulating. And especially in long fics. The author could make the first chapter a list of tws and stuff that they keep updating, but that destroys the purpose of ao3 tags: you can't filter content like that, you can only filter tags.

I honestly think they should just find a way to delete the fics with the trolling tags, or make a readmore thing so it doesn't hurt the browsing. At the very least make the tag limit longer.

sorry in advance that this is going to be rambly and weird. I have a lot of thoughts.

I get where you're coming from but I also still disagree. Like it's definitely going to change the way longfic writers tag, but I really don't think it's going to hurt them. I think it's going to encourage more effective tagging and that that's going to be better for everybody in the long run. If anything, I think that overtagging is what's hurting longfic writers, it makes their works look unappealing, and actually important information gets buried in a wall of text.

i will admit though that I do understand better now why less room for trigger tagging is going to be an issue. My preferred tagging style is "General/umbrella warnings in the tags, with whatever elaboration/specifics the author deems necessary in an author's note/author's notes at the beginning of each chapter" (example: "animal death" in the tags, so that the filters catch it + people who can't handle the subject At All know to keep scrolling, and then the author's note specifying that its in the context of game hunting & not a pet death, so that people who were uncertain and needed more info could click in and get the specifics.) and I thought that preference was pretty universal? But apparently a lot of people use the tags as an exhaustive list of warnings, which I didn't know because when I see a work with more than, well with more than 75 tags, I just start scrolling until it's gone.

(this is a tangent and I get that my experiences are not universal. but I genuinely dislike full warning lists in the tags because, for me at least, it makes it harder for me to figure out if the story is something I can/want to read. The things I Really Do Not Want To Read about are rare, and rarely tagged the same way twice, so the exclusion filter isn't really helpful for me. I have to actually read the full list of warnings and if the things I'm looking for are sandwiched inbetween a bunch of trope/character tags in a big wall o text I am going to miss it. This has happened to me multiple times.)

I think that that's an ineffective tagging style, basically. Lots of tags is kind of the opposite of useful tags, imo. Short, to the point and consistently worded warnings are better and I think having less space will encourage people to do that. I understand why people do this other style, though, and also why it would frustrate them that they can no longer do that. I think it really sucks that ao3 let everyone wild west their website for so long that it managed to spawn like three distinct groups of people who all use the website in completely incompatible ways, and now it's at the point where any new rule implemented is going to screw a lot of people over no matter what. But I digress.

Anyways, as long as someone isn't putting Revolutionary Girl Utena levels of warnings in their tags (and if your fic needs that much... maybe you should just put yur top 10 biggest warnings on there and slap a Dead Dove Do Not Eat on the end there, yknow?), I think that 75 tags will fully accommodate them. I get that tags start adding up, but also I think a lot of people are underestimating how many tags 75 tags is.

Like to just add up how many tags are used in your example: three / pairing tags, lets go crazy and say three more & pairing tags, tag every character tag in those pairings that's twelve, #abusive relationship + #not main pairing tags, three fandom tags bc multiple source mediums, a #[controversial character] positive tag... that's 24 tags. Like all the necessary character & pairing tags are handled in less than a third of the space given (and personally I consider this slightly over tagged. I think the only character tags you should put on a fic are the very mainest/pov characters, but yknow) and honestly if you can't then figure out a way to communicate the rest of the necessary information about your fic in 51 tags and a 1250 character summary then I really don't know how to help you. I personally would have to really push myself to figure out how to put more than 75 tags on one fic, regardless of the length of the fic. And I can't help but notice that a lot of the fics I could find with over 75 tags while searching last night had a lot of... unnecessary duplicate tags, often for information that could've been easily otherwise intuited (tagging #mandolorian #mandolore #mandolorian character and #mandolorian culture on a Jango Fett pre-series fic, for example)

I do have some criticisms about the current change though. I think it would've been better to have individual tag number limits for each individual field (x number of fandom tags, x number of character tags, etc.) instead of a 75 tags over all limit (or make a "warning tags" field that's separate from "additional tags" but that's a separate essay and would... probably mean overhauling the whole site. so not very practical.) A readmore option would be good too, and I'm not sure why they didn't go for that? I also think that this change will be most effective if done in combination with other changes. Like posting very loosely or not at all enforced official tagging/style guides for the site. I really think that even a tepid attempt at standardization will increase the site's usability like, A Lot.

I'm not sure how cohesive that was. TL;DR I appreciate hearing your thoughts, mine are that I still think this is a step in the right direction. And that cutting back on overtagging will lead to more concise, effective tagging which will make browsing and filtering easier in the long run.

hey, anon again. I guess a safe space would be where i feel comfy. Not have ppl send hate. Although that my be inevitable. But i guess i feel lonely because it does feel like high school. Where everyone has their own friends and i find that ppl i thought i would be really close to, the other doesn't really show that back.

I'm sorry. I just feel comfy talking to you so. I'm telling myself to pull through, right and i even unfollowed to not see them. But they are friends of the other people i follow and im like. When for the first time will i ever feel like i belong. And to answer it's mostly fandom.

You have nothing to apologize for! This is kind of long so I’ll put it under a cut.

First of all, people sending hate is sadly inevitable with the anon feature on tumblr. They also make it impossible to block anons and doing so is useless because tumblr is useless. An easy way to get rid of that is to turn anon off. It sucks because it’s the case of one potential asshole ruining it for other people who are most likely not assholes. But guess what? Your safe space and how you feel ultimately trumps how anyone else feels at the end of the day. Yes it may cut off some connection to people, but if that is what brings you peace of mind, go for it.

And secondly, you can always unfollow, block, and filter. I can’t tell you how many people I block and filter because this is my blog and I can do whatever I want. I’m not worried about how anyone else feels about it because this is KW’s blog therefore I’ll curate my online experience to look however tf I want it to! 😂 if that’s what it takes to make logging onto tumblr a more enjoyable experience for you, do that!!

Lastly, like I said in my last answer, I find many friendships on tumblr to come off as pandering and childish, but this could also just be because I’m older than most of the people I see in my tumblr circle.

I’ve made lots of friends off tumblr. Four people off tumblr alone know my real name and what I look like, and two have access to my private Twitter account. I don’t feel the need to broadcast those things or show off my friendships to them every day because why would I? Will I occasionally mention them and tag them in things on here? Sometimes but it’s rare. I don’t dive into their ask boxes all the time because I can literally just speak to them privately if I wanna talk 😂

I find most people perform with friendships on here and it’s a constant “look at me and who I’m friends with” and that is very deliberate. I’m sure that’s not the case for everyone but I’m willing to bet it’s the case for most, especially for most of what you’re seeing. There’s nothing wrong with you because you’re not in those groups. Most of those fizzle out and die off because that’s the nature of those kinds of friendships. I’ve gone through my fair share of internet cycle of friends in different fandoms when I was younger and I def did the same things I see others doing, and trust me when I say I speak from experience—many of those friendships are temporary and performative. Again, that may not be the case for everyone but it’s the case for most from my experience. It just is what it is because of the natural tendency to involve one self in cliques (sociologically we do this for protection, etc). There’s nothing wrong with them for doing this either. But my point is, look beyond what you’re seeing and remember that not being friends with those people may be for the best. Maybe it wouldn’t have lasted. Maybe it would’ve gotten you caught up in drama. Who knows? But know it’s for a reason and it’s not because you’re not worthy or worth having for a friend.

My advice is to make your space look however you want to. Unfollow, filter and block people and don’t be worried about the “repercussions” because this is literally the internet. What are they going to do? Beat your ass? 😂 Do what makes YOU happy. Don’t show love to anyone who isn’t reciprocating that back genuinely. That’s their loss, not yours. And just be yourself. Reach out to people who make you feel safe (if my blog is that place, feel free to claim an anon emoji and we can chat whenever!). Make your blog the safest place it can be for YOU because you owe no one nothing in terms of what constitutes your happiness and safety.

Cliques exist everywhere. They are also so incredibly pervasive on tumblr. It doesn’t bother me to not be apart of it cause I’m a grown ass adult who doesn’t want to be in it, but it annoys me to see so I can only imagine how it feels to be impacted by it. Your feelings are valid. And I wish I could answer that question as to when you’ll feel like you’ll belong. The internet may be the place where you find it. It also may not be. If you bank everything on finding “belongingness”, especially in very specific spaces, you may actually find yourself feeling more empty. It’s okay not to belong, but I also understand wanting to.

I encourage you to be your true, authentic self and don’t worry about making friends or whatever. Come on here and have fun. You will find your people eventually simply by being authentic. When you’re not looking for anything in particular, you will just find those things cause that’s how life works. Or rather, those things will find you. With ease, too cause you’re no longer worried about it.

I’m sorry if this wasn’t the answer you were hoping for but I do promise you that I’m sure you’re not alone. And I hope this helps, somewhat. ❤️

hello anon!! i run a statcounter for IPs but it doesnt always work for ppl who access through the tumblr app, i don’t think; a lot of the anon hate i get i just use the ‘block’ option, but last night got to me because i’ve been getting that kind of writer a lot which is . . . a bad look for the jojo fandom who are, as a whole from the ones i’ve interacted with, lovely!!! <3

extremely fun fact for people who think ‘popularity’ is important to me: i would 100% rather have 10 people who regularly comment, reblog my fics with tags and interact with me than 100 people who read my fic and either leave a like or simply move on. i think this is true for the VAST MAJORITY of writers tbh. i’m glad that people think i am a ‘popular’ blog (i am not in the grand scheme of things, one of my ex-best friends used to run a kpop reader insert blog with like 30,000 followers) bc it gives me an ego boost lmao, but i really just want people to read and enjoy the stuff i write!!!

Now im not gonna say 'dont feel bad pls' bc I know that's not really useful but what I do think is useful is just discussing why that anon and many others feel the need to respond that way. As someone who follows a lot of writing blogs myself and have done for a long time, i've seen my handful of favourite writers come and go for different reasons, lose motivation for a while, gain motivation for a while, go from multi to single fandom, or single fandom to multi. Often times as a reader it can be upsetting when things change but it's also important as a reader to understand that some things aren't in anyone's control, I can't control what my favourite writers become a fan of or lose interest of, I can't control things in their personal lives that may motivate or demotivate them to write, but what I can do is support them as long as they're active, and if they move on to do things i'm no longer interested in or i'm the one that changed interests, rather than being upset that they're evolving to do other things or that they're not evolving with me, I think it's important that I still feel thankful for the works that I enjoyed while we were still on the same page and this is how I personally deal with those negative feelings. I think the anons that lash out at you probably just dont know what to do with themselves, maybe they got attached to your works while you were still only a jjba blog and now that you're evolving they're upset, while I understand how they feel, they're going the completely wrong way about it. I've learned to take these things and turn them into something positive for myself or at least something bittersweet that I can move on from but the anons that lash out at you for whatever reason probably haven't learned this yet. Maybe it's because i've moved on and changed interests a lot myself that I know how these things go for both writers and readers but those anons maybe haven't experienced this as much so they dont know what to do with themselves other than complain that you've changed and throw insults at you in an attempt to get you to revert back. None of this is because of the quality of your writing like they want you to believe, it's literally just because you've evolved and while some of your old followers might not like the new content for no reason other than it not being their cup of tea, it's definitely not regressed at all. You are pumping out a lot of content right now but every single thing i've read has just been better than the last. Things that really stand out to me is how well you get characterisation down to a T and all of your dialogue is just on point and from the pov of a reader I think those things seem the hardest to get right so I am such a huge fan of your stuff at the moment and I can tell you're really putting so much thought and care into each and every fic no matter how fast you're producing it, I think the fact that you're also proud of what you're writing at the moment really shines through as well and I just adore the passion that radiates from every completed request as well as in the responses for the subsequent thirsts resulting from these works that appear in your ask box later (I know i've sent quite a few by now~)

Just to be clear i'm not defending those anons in any way, while I can understand what they might be feeling/why they're reacting in the way they are I still believe it's just so immature to be hateful online point blank. Even during a time where I still got upset with writers if they started doing something else I still never targeted that negativity directly to the writer and sending rude or hateful comments whether on anon or not never something i'd stooped low enough to do even when I still had an immature way of thinking, however, I hope that it might make it a little easier to brush them off if we try and understand what they're really upset about, and that they're just putting the blame for their negative feelings onto the wrong thing rather than coming to terms with change themselves.

hello anon!! i appreciate the long message. i do feel bad for people who have no interest in what i’m currently producing and i get that they feel upset about it; i’ve watched a lot of fellow jojo writers move on completely or just stop posting, honestly. this kind of thing is why i was so intense about asking people if it would be better if i made a separate blog but the resounding answer seemed to be ‘i’m just vibing with whatever happens and i’ll block tags as needed’.

i often return to works by my favourite reader-insert writers who no longer write for the fandoms i like (and i read stuff bc it sounds interesting or i trust the person who writes it), but change can be difficult and i guess at this point i’ve - whether u like me or not lmao - been a fixture in jojo reader-insert tumblr for a While so it’s probably kind of jarring.

I just wanted to pop in and say that regardless of what fandom you write for, the love and care you pour into your writing and into interacting with followers who care about your work as well is really obvious. you're doing this for FREE and people should appreciate what you've given us so far, since ultimately this blog should be for you, whatever that means to you at any point in time. it's ok to jump fandoms! the important thing is that you feel good about what you're producing and that it makes you happy. everyone else is just a bonus - but, seeing you on my dash certainly makes me happy : ) I hope you feel better soon!

FINALLY SOMEONE WHO GETS IT!!! Like in the beginning, I was okay with the whole Alex/Luke being exs headcanon but now I’m over the headcanon since people want this ship over the two CANON MAIN Ships of the show that BOTH includes POC (They took with Charlie and Owen said during a few IG lives and believe it’s true. No offense, Charlie and Owen aren’t writers, so what they say about their characters isn’t show canon.) like it’s cool people are liking them but don’t discredit the two interracial ship that is canon for a basic white one just because they are both white.

TBH, I CANNOT see Alex/Luke as exs at all. Like Luke seems to wrapped up in music to be with anyone in the 90’s, Hell he ran away from home because he wanted to play his music. But people saying it’s “show canon” and it needs to be explored next season or else they will stop watching the show is taking it to far. I love both Willex and Juke, they have such a great dynamic with one another it’s crazy. And it seems that’s the ship Kenny and Company are moving full steam ahead with. (Like Charlie and Madison’s chemistry is crazy intense and I Stan their friendship so much) there’s no reason for Alex/Luke to be shown if there is no affect in the present. Why bring it up if you aren’t going to do anything with it? Also it will throw off the dynamic and flow of the show.

A/N: I’m sorry but I can’t read anyone else’s work while I write Jól because I’m trying to keep my writing as original as possible and I don’t wanna even subliminally get ideas from other ppl’s fics. Laid out on Dagmar’s bed was your dress, the white mute swan feathers as perfect as when you had first stitched them on. You had a particular affinity for swans, hence the swan feathers with which your dress was adorned. When you had put it on a few weeks ago but had been interrupted by Ivar, a strange feeling had overcome you. At the time you had brushed it off as anxiety, but now, when you put it on again you had the same strange feeling. It was as if anywhere the feathers were on the dress, your skin tingled and warmed.

Dagmar had allowed you to keep the dress there since her room was much closer to the square that the altar was in than your home. She followed you and Torvi to her room so she could help you get ready, too. They helped you out of the bloody dress and draped it over the chair, careful not to let it drag on the ground. It was now sacred and would be burned along with the altar and sacrifices when Yule concluded in three weeks time.

Dagmar brought you a pail of warm water and began to rinse the goat’s blood from your hair as you sat on the bed. You were exhausted from the intensity of the ritual you had just performed. You stood to pull your dress on and then allowed Torvi to rebraid your hair. You thought you would have to wear your fur coat with the dress since it was so cold out, but the rush of the sacrifice and the feathers on your dress seemed to stir an inexplicable warmth in you that allowed you to go without it.

By the time you were redressed and cleaned up, most of the Vikings had moved their celebrations into the Great Hall. They were ready to feast and drink all night long. You smiled as the crowd parted to allow you up to where Aslaug sat on her throne. Just a couple short weeks ago you were a simple farmer and leather worker who was the daughter of a great warrior and sister of Björn Ironside. With the spotlight on them, you were often overlooked. Now, everything was different. Aslaug’s interest in you had made you as well known throughout Kattegat as your father and brother were. A chair was waiting for you near the head of the massive table set with a huge feast. There were fruits and vegetables of every kind, an enormous boar, lamb, two seals, and even a reindeer.

As you took your seat, Aslaug rose and Ivar roared, “QUIET! My mother wishes to speak!” She looked at Ivar and smiled before turning to face the crowd.

“Welcome all,” Aslaug began, “please, eat and drink your fill! Tonight we celebrate the rebirth of the Sun, and we must all ask Thor to protect her as she grows and to protect us from the spirits that roam Midgard during the darkness of winter.” At this, everyone voiced their agreement and then she continued. “As everyone saw earlier, Y/N performed the sacrifice for us tonight,” she said while looking at you. “The gods have made it known to me that she is very special. You will all treat her with the same respect you give my sons.” Someone in the back of the Hall yelled, “SKAL!” and everyone else echoed the toast, making you smile widely.

After the feast began, you slipped out of the Great Hall to fetch the Sword of Kings. Normally, a slave would do something as menial as fetching something, but since the sword was so revered, only you and Aslaug knew where it was kept to prevent it from being stolen. The day Aslaug had told you that you would perform the sacrifice she had also shown you where it was kept, and said that the gods had told her to do so.

The Sword would be put on display over the throne for the duration of Yule and guarded 24 hours a day by two sentries that would rotate with another two sentries. It was meant to offer further protection to the Sun goddess through her fragile development during Yule.

On your way to get it you paused and turned to look behind you because you had the suspicion you were being followed. Unexpectedly, Hvitserk’s rough, warm hands ran across the back of your neck. He surprised you from behind and whispered into your neck as his hands moved to trace the metal link he had made for your dress. “I finally see why you needed this.” His warm breath on your neck combined with the crisp winter air made you shiver. One of his hands moved along the side of your body, following the curve of your waist before snaking across your supple hips as he pressed his body against your back. You closed your eyes with pleasure and let out a breathy sigh.

Again, Floki interrupted you. “Y/N,” he called from a dark alley, making you jump. Hvitserk was unflinching and you could feel the annoyance radiating off of him in waves. He bit your neck possessively before stalking away.

“You know he is nothing but trouble, Y/N,” Floki warned as he stared in the direction that Hvitserk had disappeared. When he turned back to you he had a stern look in his eyes and his lips pressed firmly together. You could tell that he was fighting the urge to follow Hvitserk and punch him. It was no secret that Floki preferred Ivar over his brothers. The way they taunted Ivar had always bothered him, and now Hvitserk threatened to take you for his own.

“Floki, I am an adult, I can handle myself. You are not my father,” you said defiantly. His eyes flared with a mix of anger and hurt, making you regret the acid in your tone. “Fine, do what you like,” he called out bitterly over his shoulder as he stormed off into the dark forest, heading for his cabin.

After being left alone, you continued on to the place the Sword was hidden and reached it without interruption. Just outside Kattegat, there was a medium-sized rock situated discreetly in the craggy terrain that disguised a decent sized hole in the earth that was lined with cloth and leather to protect the Sword from the elements. After you retrieved it, you hurried back into the Hall and made your way to Aslaug’s throne. She stood and got everyone’s attention before lifting the Sword high above her head. “Behold the Sword of Kings! May it aid the Sun goddess and defend her this Yule! May it safeguard our own homes and children! And finally, may it call the spirit of Ragnar down from Valhalla, to watch over his family and his people!” At those words, the entire Hall erupted with cheers and a celebratory song picked up in the background.

Some hours later, you woke up with your head on the table of the Great Hall, a very faint light from the sun starting to filter in, and Hvitserk peering down at you. He was poking you and asked if you needed him to go feed your animals. Still disoriented by being woken up from a deep sleep and a bit hungover, you nodded yes and he headed for the doors.

You were still wearing your swan feather dress from the night before so you stumbled to Dagmar’s room and changed into something more casual. You washed your face and rebraided your hair and headed to the kitchen.

“Good morning, sunshine,” Dagmar greeted you. “Want breakfast?” You replied, “Yes, of course. Somehow I’m starving!”

After you ate, you went back into the Hall and found Aslaug sitting and sipping some mead. You sat down and she looked up at you thoughtfully.

“I saw my son with you on the altar yesterday, Y/N,” Aslaug said. Since the fervor that had overcome you during the sacrifice was gone, you blushed a bright red. Aslaug continued, “Don’t be embarrassed, who could have resisted you? The power you wield was very obvious during that ritual, much more than it usually is. Any man, or woman for that matter, who says they didn’t want to fuck you then and there has to be lying.” Confused, you wondered aloud, “What power?”

Aslaug smiled a little and asked you if you remembered that her mother is Brynhildr the famous Valkyrie and shieldmaiden and her father is Sigurd who slew the dragon Fafnir. Then she reminded you, “I am also the wife of Ragnar, the son of Odin.”

At the mention of Ragnar’s name you thought you detected a hint of sadness flash across her eyes, but it was gone in an instant. Ragnar had left her, his sons, and all of Kattegat for gods knows where years ago. Aslaug had seen his death in a vision, so everyone knew that he would never return.

“I am also a Völva, so you know that I can see what the gods reveal to me in dreams and visions. I can see the power you have, even though it is buried deep within you,” she asserted.

“No, Queen Aslaug, you must be wrong,” you said, despite your growing feeling that she was correct. Her expression became stormy at your denial. “I am certain that I am not wrong about this, Y/N,” she insisted, “I feel it in my bones.”

After thinking back on your life, you were sure she was right. You had always been different from the other children growing up, and now from the other women in Kattegat. You had never really connected with anyone fully, not even Torvi, your best friend. As a child, you loved to swim more than play with the other children. Your mother could barely keep you out of the river. Floki adored this about you because it meant that you loved to get on his boats and stay with him for days at a time. You loved to crawl up on the helm of his boats, stretch out your arms, and feel the wind on your face. It always felt like you were free, flying over the water. Talking and playing with the other kids never interested you as much as that feeling.

People had always acted a little different around you, but you could never figure out exactly why. You had grown up thinking you were just weird, but Aslaug’s words changed your perspective. Maybe this power she spoke of meant you had a different energy, a different aura, that made some people feel indescribably odd when around you.

Aslaug shook you from your memories when she spoke again to bring up the subject of the traditional tournament that occurred during the first few days of Yule following the winter solstice. “I want you to preside over it,” she stated firmly. “The gods have made it known that you will play a very important role this Yule. I want you to consider participating in the fights and give me your decision by tonight.” Dazed, you left the Great Hall and headed for the cliff overlooking the fjord. You needed to breathe.

When you arrived at the fjord, you found a rock to rest on and sat wrapped in the fur coat you made. The wind on the cliff was bitterly cold, and little snowflakes gusted around you. The cold, crisp air offered your mind a clarity that it could not find within the city.

After contemplating the idea for a while, you decided that for the first time in your life you would participate. Aslaug’s revelation that you wielded considerable power and insistence that you oversee the fights, empowered you to join the fighting this year. As you grew up, your parents trained you to fight but forced you to keep your prowess hidden. They forbid you from ever sparring with anyone in all of Kattegat and denied your wishes to raid with the other shieldmaidens. Your mother and father knew that you were the most formidable fighter in all of Scandinavia and that too much attention and fame would only bring trouble and they wanted to protect their daughter.

You returned to Aslaug and told her that you would not only preside over the tournament but fight in it too, which pleased her greatly. After that, you made the trek home and started a fire as soon as you got home. As you undressed, you thought about the sacrifice that would take place tomorrow morning before the sun rose, which would allow the tournament to begin. Another goat had to be sacrificed to ask the gods to give strength and luck to the fighters in the tournament. Aslaug would be the one to do it though, not you.

The goat was led up to the altar and stopped in front of Aslaug. After she slit the goat’s throat, the blood was collected in several bowls, ready to be used as body paint for the fighters. The bowls of blood were taken to the platform overlooking the fighting ring that had been set up the night before. While all of this went on, you were putting your armor on in the small shack that the fighters used to get ready.

(This is what I imagine the ring looks like minus the stone walls to the right of the picture and plus a big crowd around the ring. Also, imagine that there is a light coating of snow on everything.)

You surprised everyone, especially Hvitserk, by emerging from the shack and stepping up on the platform that overlooked the fighting ring and the crowd gathered around it, dressed in your mother’s old leather armor. It was the most beautiful piece of armor you had ever laid eyes on and you had always wondered where she had gotten it from. Though it was several years old, it was in flawless condition and your mother didn’t even try to maintain it. It was like the armor itself was laced with a powerful magic. It had intricate patterns in the leather and studs throughout the design. It also had chainmail shoulders, allowing you more freedom of movement in a fight. Your hair was skillfully braided by Torvi and decorated with leather braids you had made from leftover strips you had from making other leather wares and a circlet that your braids twisted around.

As your eyes surveyed the crowd of Vikings, you wished that Björn was there. You yearned to spar with him in the fighting pit. You knew he was likely having grand adventures, but you still wished he was there to celebrate Yule with you. If only he could see you now. Before he had even met your mother, your father had had Björn by another woman who died during his birth, so Björn had always felt a little out of place in your house and in Kattegat. He was respected as a great warrior but had few real friends. He had set out with his only close friend, Torstein, and a horde of Vikings that followed him to distant lands because they too wanted adventure and treasure from endless raids. You drove these thoughts from your head as you registered that all eyes were on you. Before sitting next to Aslaug, you raised your arms, signaling for the fighting to begin.

After your signal, growls ripped across the square, then chants and music picked up and men began to fight each other and then the shieldmaidens fought after the first few rounds of men. The sparring was intense, all of them driven mad by adrenaline and the music and chants from those who weren’t fighting.

Once you tired of just watching, you jumped down from the platform and made your way to the fighting ring. The first three men were easy for you to defeat. They were large and slow, so you could nimbly move around them. The next two were quicker, but not as strong. The sixth was both strong and quick, proving a decent match. Your fight with him lasted much longer than with the others, but you eventually ended up besting him. Your victories had you giddy and you screamed, “WHO IS NEXT?!” while holding your arms up, eyes wild. Ubbe stepped out of the crowd with a dark grin and started on the offensive immediately. Ubbe had been trained by his father, Ragnar, making him the best warrior you had faced thus far.

You struggled against Ubbe’s onslaught, catching many blows with your shield, and dodging others completely. He was fighting like a rabid dog, determined to defeat you. Every time he struck, he let out a roar. This was the first challenging fight you had ever had, not including those with your parents or brother. He forced you back, to the edge of the ring, but you managed to duck underneath his arm and land a blow, knocking him off balance. You took that opportunity to sweep his feet out from under him, making him land square on his back as you let out a fierce cry. You put your boot on his chest and poked the tip of your sword under his chin. He smiled and acknowledged your skills, “I have to say I am impressed, Y/N.”

As you let Ubbe up, Hvitserk was covering his face in some of the goat’s blood, hoping Thor would grant him strength in this fight. He had watched you defeat six men plus Ubbe before he decided he wanted to try. Seeing you fight so hard actually turned him on quite a bit. He was completely amazed. No one had any idea that you were this talented.

He stepped into the ring and you turned to face him, smirking as you saw him. “So you want a taste, Hvitserk?” you called out. “Yes, I want to taste you,” he growled, low enough that only you could hear. You fought back a smile before suddenly lunging forward, taking him off guard.

Hvitserk barely sidestepped your swing and ducked as you brought it speeding back towards his head. He popped back up and engaged you with his axe, as worthy a fighter as his brother, though not as fervent. You both went back and forth, relatively evenly matched. After a few minutes, you could tell Hvitserk was starting to tire but you were barely out of breath, even after fighting seven people.

You began to land heavy blows on his shield more frequently until you finally struck it from his hands and got your sword to his neck before he could raise his axe. He looked up at you, chest heaving from the effort of the fight. He looked as if he wanted to fuck you right there, in the middle of the ring with the crowd watching.

“You are the best fighter I have ever faced in single combat,” he panted, “better even than all of my brothers. Better than even your half-brother, Björn Ironside. You are more fierce than a berserker, and maybe the best warrior in all of Scandinavia.” His eyes burned with a lustful fire.

A satisfied smile broke across your face because of his comment and it grew wider as the crowd swarmed you and lifted you up over their heads, hailing you the victor of the tournament. They carried you into the Great Hall where another feast was laid out and stood you on an empty spot on top of the great table. You turned in a circle to look at everyone who filled the Hall as they began to cheer for you. After a moment you got down and took your place near the head of the table.

Once most of the Vikings had passed out drunk, you slipped out and made your way home with a torch. As you hiked there, you didn’t notice Hvitserk following you. Little did you know, he had been watching you and was worried that you were going off alone. When you made it home safe, Hvitserk returned to the Great Hall.

You slept soundly that night and awoke when you heard the massive horn blowing in Kattegat. You realized that ships must be sailing up the fjord, headed for Kattegat. You got ready quickly and after feeding your animals, you rushed down to the docks to see who had arrived. There were already several people gathered there, including Aslaug and all her sons.

A man you would always recognize no matter how much he changed stepped off the boat with a huff. “Björn!!!” you exclaimed. You ran to him, jumping into his arms. “How are you here?! Oh, how I have missed you, brother!!” Björn laughed as he picked you up and spun you around. “Y/N! I hope I’m not too late for the final Yule bonfire!”

anyways after that convo low and behold ong made his own mf side blog called

you secretly followed it on your side blog because even though you didn’t like the memes on his aesthetic blog, the stuff he was reblogging was pretty funny

anyways one day at the college that you attend you notice that someone is taking photos near the cherry blossom trees.

and you mentally freak out because tf you didn’t know he live this close and 2 he looked hella fine in person

“daniel no! I asked you to take it in this position, this is important!”

you casually walk up to seongwoo and daniel

and he just freezes up like

“shit i’ve been spotted”

so he just laughs it off and steps away from the tree awkwardly while daniel is over to the side low key trying not to laugh his ass off

“y-yeah! i actually go to this college, do you?”

“yeah! i’ve been following your blog for a while and i love the photos you post, i also like your side blog”

his eyes light up and he literally almost grabs your hands in excitement but then realizes yall are still strangers

“what’s your blog name? i’ll follow you back!”

and then this is where you realize

“oh shit, i fucked up”

you just kind of awkwardly laugh and just start to back away like

“well it was nice meeting you! i hope you see you around!”

while you scurry off though seongwoo just smiles to himself

“whats up ong?”

“usually when people spot me in public which is rare they just say ‘hey aren’t you that ong handsome guy that takes nice photos on tumblr?’ and the only person who really has directly called me ong the slate was this one girl on tumblr who told me i should make a side blog”

daniel literally started laughing which made ong confused like

ong literally turned around and gave daniel the “wtf are you laughing at face”

“you are literally loosely piecing together facts, are you sure you aren’t thinking that way because you want to meet that girl in person?”

he wiggled his eyebrows a little and seongwoo scoffed,

“shut up daniel let’s go back to taking pictures.”

later that day your phone pinged signaling that you had a notification from tumblr

“hey! I know we haven’t talked since you like criticized my account! how are you”

“oh also your new photos on your account are so aesthetic”

you slightly smiled seeing the second message but when you read the first one he sent you got a little salty

“OK FIRST OFF i didn’t criticize your account, i was just suggesting something to improve your account”

“what ever you say but anyways what’s your name and how are you?”

“ok fine well i’m Y/N which is a pretty common name BUT i’m doing fine, just working on some homework.”

“HMMM you go to college?”

“no i go to english language school”

“oh”

“no yes it’s for college”

“HAH ok bye!”

you were so confused like why talk to you for like three minutes then leave after getting some info about you?

the next day while walking down the part of your college with the cherry blossom trees you hear someone call out your name

you froze in your spot and turned around slightly, you spotted Seongwoo RUSHING towards you with a huge smile on his face

you started walking equally as fast because who cares about your class now you wanted to escape from possible embarrassment

so now here you are sipping on a hot chocolate in a cafe with seongwoo just giving you a mischievous smirk

you were literally blown away

“anyways,”

Seongwoo took out his phone and after tapping on it a little he placed it in front of you

“so i was wondering if you would take a look at the photos i have, i was planning on posting them but yknow daniel isn’t rlly a good helper”

you simply just nodded and looked over the photos while scrolling you realized that over half of them were memes which caught ong’s attention and made him flustered

“AGH i forgot to put it to my folder full of aesthetic photos!”

he snatched the phone away and then placed it in front of you again

“i see you’re more of a meme person huh?”

“just look at the photos”

so you scrolled some more and a lot of them were really nice but some of them had bad angles.

you causally changed to the camera on his phone and pointed it at him

“uh what are you doing?”

“just pose or something”

following what you said he sat up straight and did one of those aesthetic poses (ok so like just try to imagine one bc i cant DFHJKD)

you positioned yourself in a way where it looked super nice and took the photo, changed the filter and handed the phone back to him

“i think daniel needs a little more training”

he just laughed and instead of laughing with him your mind was like

“wow he has a cute laugh”

but before you could even like second guess that thought of yours seongwoo asked you something

“hey do you wanna like collab together? like you take my photos and i can help you with something? Daniel keeps on doing the same shots over and over again and i wanna have something new which you provide me with!”

“as long as you don’t take up a lot of my time sure”

this obviously made seongwoo’s smile grow large and he just took your hands in his which made you surprised and flustered

oh and your face turned a bit red too

“this is great! Hopefully we work well together”

time skipp because this is starting to get a bit long

“so seongwoo what do you think of this place?”

it was a simple abandoned train station that had been painted pink (think of bp’s aityl train station that was pink) and since he was wearing pink you thought it would be a perfect idea to take a couple of photos of him there!

before you turned you head to look at him you heard a quiet snap of a camera and saw seongwoo holding the polaroid camera

“ugh seongwoo what did i tell you? Don’t waste the film on taking pictures of the scenery, we gotta use it for you!”

he just waved you off and smiled while taking the new photo that had come out and stuffed it into his pocket.

while you were taking photos of him he stopped posing

“what’s wrong?”

“don’t you ever wanna take pictures of yourself? like and post aesthetic photos of you? i’m sure people would love that”

you shrugged and placed the camera into your bag

“i mean i’ve never really had the confidence for it, when i tried it just looked a little i don’t know, tacky?”

seongwoo nodded and then started muttering something underneath his breath

“all the photos i have of you don’t look tacky though”

“what?”

“i was just saying how it probably looks tacky but aesthetic!”

you laughed and just hit seongwoo on the shoulder”

once the photoshoot was done and you arrived home you started receiving a bunch of notifications from your friends

you picked up your phone and took a glance at it while skimming over your notes for you test tomorrow

“WAIT WHAT”

you literally dropped your phone

“HEY Y/N WHY ARE THERE PHOTOS OF YOU ON ONGTHESLATES TUMBLR?? AND THEY LOOK HELLA AESTHETIC PLZ EXPLAIN”

going on tumblr you looked at seongwoo’s posts and noticed that it was the truth

he had posted a bunch of polaroids of you, including the one he took at the train station today that you assumed was only of the scenery

“istg when i see him again i’ll make sure to expose-”

mid way of trying to think of ways to get back at him your heart stopped beating at the caption he had put

“she thinks photos of her are tacky but all the photos i have of her taken over all the time we’ve spent together say otherwise right?”

you clicked on the notes on the post, which seemed like they were going up little bit by bit and saw what people had said

“is this your girlfriend O.O”

“she’s so pretty! tell her to start her own aesthetics blog!”

“you guys should become a couple aesthetics blog, that would be so cute~”

you could feel your face going red as you brought your face to your cheeks

“ugh ong seongwoo what are you doing?”

you had to admit it was a little sweet but it just made you feel a certain way that you didn’t want to feel

you still high key wanted to expose him

SO THE NEXT DAY you started walking over to your usual meet up spot when daniel all of a sudden started walking next to you

“lets go a different route this time!”

he started pushing you in another direction

while you were questioning where he was taking you, you noticed a bunch of photos on the ground that looked like familiar places to you

at this point while you were admiring the photos daniel had left you to jus wonder what they were for

so like what people do in the movies you started following the trail of photos while picking them up

which led you to a gazebo which you didn’t even know existed at your college

the trail also led you to ong, who had his back turned towards you.

“alright ong i don’t think turning your back towards me is going to make me not see you”

you laughed softly and you could hear him chuckle a little too

so he slowly turned around

and by slowly i mean like you wanted to go up to him and turn him around fully yourself

but when he did though, you gasped

actually gasped like not enough to put your hands to your mouth though

“ong what is that?!”

your face instantly lit up and you reached your hand towards a bouquet that had all these aesthetic photos of your and seongwoo

(try to imagine it i literally cannot explain it SHKD)

“I wanted to surprise you, i know we haven’t known each other long but i would love to start a blog together and with that blog start a nice beautiful relationship between the two of us?”

you smiled and took the bouquet out of his hands

“that was super cheesy but I guess i’m not against it, i would love to take aesthetic photos with you while also being a cute couple while we’re at it”

seongwoo’s face lit up

like you know when he smiles so big that it’s literally blinding,

that kind of lit up

he instantly picked you up and spun you around making you both laugh in the process

“gosh Y/N you are like the prince to my charming”

“that literally did not make sense”

he set you down and just gave you this teasing stare

“but you like me anyways rightt?”

he smiled at you and you couldn’t help but smile back

“of course i do”

before ong could respond daniel literally burst in and ruined the moment

“ALRIGHT LOVE BIRDS SEONGWOO PROMISED ME SOME BBQ IF THIS SUCCEEDED LETS GO EAT SOME”

daniel then proceeded to grab both of your arms and drag you towards the nearby place

“also count this as your kind of first date!”

seongwoo scoffed

“first date with a third wheeler?”

now it was daniel’s turn to scoff and they both continued to bicker while walking the whole way to the place.

even though you weren’t really tuning into their conversation, you kept on the looking at each of the photos of both you and seongwoo and couldn’t help but think about how great and sweet seongwoo is

even though he teased you and also exposed you

you start to get really excited about the future with him, and also probably daniel since they stick to each other like glue

hi seo!! i kno this ain't a gaming blog and it's probably asked before, but do you have any tips for a complete beginner in ow? i played before but was kind of just thrown into it and randomly chose a character so i didn't kno what was going on. everything seems super overwhelming, so i don't kno what to kno before playing lmao :') thank you in advance!

classes

OKAY so there are three classes: dps, tank, and support. dps focuses on damaging the enemy, tanks can put up shields / have greater health to allow their team to fight longer, and supports heal ppl on their team. jeff and the rest of the overwatch team ™ have kindly divided up all the heroes up into the categories that you see on the bottom of the screen during the “hero select” part before a match starts.

generally, you want to have at least one from each class on a team to make it a balanced team. unfortunately, you might not see that as often in arcade modes / quickplay, but it’s ok!!

abilities

each hero has different mechanics and skills, so i highly suggest going in the practice range + vs ai to test out the different abilities and things like that. you have your weapon, 2 “special” abilities with cooldowns, and 1 ultimate ability that you can charge up. by practicing w/ the hero against other ppl, you can figure out what times are best to use each ability and stuff like that.

dps

oh,,, the dps,,,,,, players,,,,,,, as a support main, i can be tired ™ of dps players who overextend and then demand “i need healing” constantly,,,, but ur not gonna be one of those players!!! dw dw

essentially, you gotta be Good at Aiming to be a Good DPS (but that’s ok, there are some heroes that do not have a high skill cap)

soldier 76 is a good “beginner” hero to start off on bc 1. you play him during the tutorial and 2. he’s the most traditional fps character you can play in the game. he’s got sprint so you can get to places faster, a little biotic field to heal yourself with, and a nice rocket so you can blast someone in the face. the ultimate is also auto-aim so that’s even more helpful for beginner players.

junkrat is another dps that’s relatively easy to play for ppl bc his little bomb things go off and have an explosion radius damage. bastion, mei, and symmetra all have sorta self-heal-ish abilities / passives that might make them easier for you to pick up. symmetra and torbjorn have turrets that auto-aim, so they can be easier heroes to pick up too. just know that ur gonna get smacked later on in higher levels bc No One Likes Playing Against These Two DSJKSDKDSJKKJ

genji, hanzo, and widowmaker tend to be the most popular dps that i see ppl choose in games? idk why tho

my dps favs are soldier 76, mccree, and pharah

tanks

the unsung heroes of overwatch,,,,, no one bothers to play tank in quick play and it’s truly a tragedy bc u never realize how much u need a tank until u need a tank

your job as a tank is to 1. be that big distraction that the enemy team wants to go after, 2. make space for your team to work in, and 3. protect your team. this is why they have high health and shield abilities.

there are 2 different types of tanks: main tanks and off-tanks. off-tanks are generally more mobile, have less health, their defense abilities are shorter, and have “more offensive” capabilities than main tanks (so kinda like a dps / tank hybrid?). they go zooming around more often to protect teammates that are farther away from the objective. main tanks are solid, thicc, rock-hard bastions of protection that get on the payload / control point and do their damn bestest to keep the objectives going + protect their teams with their blessed shields.

some ppl are picky on how to categorize them, but here’s my categorization: off-tanks: dva, zarya, wrecking ball, roadhog main tanks: orisa, reinhardt, winston (winston’s on thin ice tho)

i’d say dva is the most popular tank + it’s nice to pick up as a beginner bc she’s got good mobility, infinite ammo, and a “second life” with the mech and baby dva (you’ll see when u play her). in terms of main tank, i’ve heard ppl say that reinhardt is the easiest main tank to pick up ???? but i personally prefer orisa over him bc her shields are easier to deploy and you can kill things from afar. her reload time is very slow compared to other heroes.

my favorites are orisa and dva.

supports

basically, these are your healers!! they keep your team in tip-top shape + make sure that no one dies. (ppl still die.)

mercy is the easiest support to play imo. your healing beam can lock onto a person + you have high mobility + i genuinely love mercy’s gun even tho i should be focusing on healing. mercy does get a bad rep for being “every e-girl’s main” and ppl might be rude to u if ur a mercy main ;; anyhow, the most important thing to focus on as mercy is your positioning. do not get urself into a position where you cannot easily get out and please don’t die ;;

lucio is another hero that has high mobility and requires positioning bc you have aoe heal but u need to make sure your team is within your radius. wall-riding is very fun too and booping ppl off cliffs is highly entertaining.

brigitte, moira, and zenyatta are supports, but it’s very easy to be a pseudo-dps with them if you’re interested in taking down ur enemies too.

ana is probably the hardest hero bc she has little mobility and requires good aim to heal and to kill. on that note, zen and ana are the supports that require you to be good at aiming.

my favs are zen and mercy :”)

tips

practice practice practice

it’s overwhelming at first but you’ll get to know all the abilities relatively well

turn your sound up

each hero has their own unique “sound” whether that be footsteps or ultimate voice lines. the ult voice lines change depending on if they’re on your team or the enemy team + it can be very helpful to know them.

footstep sounds from the enemy team tend to be louder, and the more dangerous the hero, the louder their footstep (ex: reaper, mccree). hearing footsteps has helped me escape from a flanking reaper out to kill me dsjsdjkksdj

watch overwatch esports

pro ovw esports are casted by ppl who explain how the players are moving and reacting + this can help you get a better understanding of the gameplay and abilities

overwatch league is finished, but you can go back and watch their videos + blizzard has been pretty good abt making sure that owl is appealing to newcomers. i’d recommend matches casted by uber and mr. x

don’t get discouraged by toxic ppl and be a positive person in-game!

play with friends!

ovw is a lot more fun when u play with friends and chat in vc while playing! also the joy of playing with friends can help u feel a lot more comfy with the game too

i think i’ll just share generic tips! From each stage of the giffing process. i still have so much i can improve with in giffing, so i’m sorry if i give you super wrong advice ahhh but i hope this helps a little?it got super long so it’s under the read more!!

Downloading Videos

make sure it’s the highest quality video you can get. 1080p is your friend. ok honestly, when i’ve giffed, i havent really noticed a difference in quality between 2k/4k and 1080p? maybe im doing it wrong but honestly the only thing ive noticed is that 2k/4k just slows down my computer drastically and takes up way too much space on a computer that already has like zero space to begin with. so i tend to stick with 1080p.

Also! if you can get 60fps, thats also nice bc it helps your gifs look smoother.

yaknow how i said 1080p is your friend? well ts files are your best friends/family. if you can torrent them or download the, your gifs will look super pretty. i highly recommend this for live performance gifs. you can find ts files for a lot of shows, but again, since my computer has

kpop24hrs and kpopexciting are two places i go for those live perf ts files! kpop24hrs tends to have more i feel (it’s where i go when i want to gif my rookie groups that dont have too much attention on them)

you can also find torrents on twitter, if you search the right things

Extracting Videos

ok for this, if you have a pc (so like not a mac) i HIGHLY recommend looking into avisynth. there’s this tumblr account named brandinator who i’ve heard gives really awesome tips for avisynth and made it really easy for people to get avisnyth.if youre like me and your stuck with a mac, or if you just want to stick with photoshop then you can read the rest of this

i have photoshop cs5? so my tips are generally based around that.

for youtube videos (so basically mp4/avi format) i use photoshop’s video extraction feature. file—>import–>video frames to layersif your photoshop is like mine for whatever reason and it doesnt want to recognize mp4 files, then what i do is changed the .mp4 extension to a .avi extension (and its super easy to do on mac….i dont have a pc so idk how different that is) the quality doesnt really change either with that simple changing of the ending it sorta just tricks photoshop i guess lol idunno

when youre on the ‘video frames to layers’ window, make sure you don’t hit the ‘limit to every _____ frames’ bc that makes it lose the smoothness quality of gifs. maybe back when the gif limit was like 1mb that would have been important, but we live in a world of luxury now. so for smoother looking gifs, make sure that box is unchecked. other ppl (pc users i think) tend to use other video extraction softwares. i cant remember the name, but all i remember is that for macs, that software cant extract frames so its useless for us. i think it was kmplayer? not sure. like you can download kmplayer on mac but it doesnt have the same features rip.for ts files, i use vlc player (since ps can’t open it) and sit there and capture each and every frame lol.

Actually Giffing

here’s where things get a bit interpretive

(im assuming you know how to make a gif since you’ve asked for specific things like sharpening and stuff)

for coloring,

ive found that not changing the lighting too much of the video youre giffing leads to higher quality stuff…but i also hate not changing the lighting too much which is why a lot of my gifs turn out grainy hahah (my coloring is really centered around how to make the person in the gifs look the most ‘natural’? so that usually involves trying to take out video filters). but yea the gifs in which i didnt change too much with coloring, tended to be my most high quality gifs.

i don’t use other peoples psds and make my own everytime for each gif, and i only usually just adjust ‘curves’ and ‘exposure’ yea.

if there’s an ugly color background that you want to make look more white, when youre in ‘curve’s, go to each color (red green and blue) and drag the little line thing in the top right corner a little to the left. idk what is actually happening there and why it only really addresses the bg but thats a good way to try to make your bg whiter without actually whitewashing the gif.

for sharpening

lol sharpening, my enemy. its what i struggle with the most

i use .4 at 500% for smart sharpen

and then for topaz i make sure clean color is at 0 first of all, and i mess around with ‘overall strength’ and ‘reduce blur’ until i get the quality that i wanted. i nvr go higher than .07 strength.

but an important thing for sharpening i think is deciding when you want to crop the picture? do you crop it before or after the sharpening/topaz? i dunno honestly, but for me ive found that cropping first, and then applying sharpening settings leads to the highest quality (or maybe thats what im used to so it turns out better).

oh yea i dont resize, i crop instead. i’m not sure if that does anything but when i was first starting i found that resizing made my gifs look more blurry…? and that cropping was nicer to my gifs? i’m not sure if that does anything though lol maybe cropping is worse who knows, but its something ive stuck with ever since ive started

save settings

i’ve recently switched over to diffusion! but sometimes that doenst work out so i use the pattern one. i play around with adaptive/selective to see which one looks better or takes up less space haha

last but not least: pray

i spend a lot of my time praying that my gif will come out good haha bc even if you think you did everything right, once you hit that ‘save for web’ button, it’ll look like the ugliest thing in the world it’s really frustrating. like even when i make a gifset from the same video using the same everything (coloring, sharpening, save settings) one gif will look like trash and the other one will be like the best thing ive ever giffed so its like?? pray
