Test shots off the infrared camera. No CHDK mod yet, so these are just pointing the camera at a plant and whacking the White Balance button.
The sky in IR photos comes out almost black, because IR passes almost completely through the atmosphere without scattering, as well as much harsher and sharper shadows because the sun dominates as a source of light, rather than the whole sky.
Next steps includes getting some more filters so I can take Kodak-style false colour IR, and loading the CHDK firmware mod on this camera. Maybe someday I'll pick up one of those Sony Nex5's that litter Gumtree.
Plants look white, because plants have pigments that reflect IR light to avoid overheating. You can actually exploit this fact to quickly monitor plant health from the air using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index: A healthy plant should reflect most IR and absorb most visible non-green light. If you capture both of these spectra and take a normalized difference, you can identify unhealthy plants that lack one of these while other terrain features can be easily disregarded.

I am extra chatty when I’m depressed and I am sorry but I am also this is my blog so.
Yeah.
And since I was talking about this on main the other day anyway -
I was thinking about that lady with the vendetta against narcissists and some of the stuff she said in her videos and how it applies to my household here.
One that really stuck with me is “They don’t like giving gifts.” which she elaborated on saying that a gift from a narcissist always has stipulations, expectations, or strings of some sort attached. I think there is also the fear that the recipient won’t love the gift and the narcissist will be embarrassed.
I was thinking about how many gifts have I gotten from That Guy over the years, and what did I have to pay for them? Not many gifts at all, honestly. It’s been 20 years and I can count them on one hand. I don’t mean like stuff I’ve tossed in the cart at the store and he’s paid for or things I’ve asked for either. Stuff he’s bought for me as a surprise. I also have to discount a few because he owned the items, I was just let to use them. They were “mine” but he could take them away at any time.
Two.
I was joking about him being a scrooge because he never gives gifts so he bought me some expensive earrings (which I never wear because I don’t wear jewelry much) to get me to stop joking about it out of guilt for the expense.
A Sony NEX5 because my old digicam had broken. I was expected to swallow for that. He knows how much it disgusts me. I never use that camera, only the phone. Honestly, it was too complicated for me.
Always he expects something in return. They aren’t gifts, they’re payments.
She mentioned “I guess I’m just a bad person” being used to put a stop to an argument where the narcissist’s behavior is the cause of a problem.
That Guy used to do that ALL THE TIME, expecting me to stop pushing a problem and instead default to NO YOU’RE NOT YOU’RE GOOD I LOVE YOU I’M SORRY and take the blame for the conflict. For daring to stand up for myself.
(He’s actually said “I want you to stand up for yourself, but not against me.” ... wow....)
But um....
The easiest way I’ve found to get him to stop doing that, and to stop using phrases like “You’re over it.” or really any dismissive, deflecting phrase he’s tried to use to not have to be responsible for himself is to agree with him or use it on him. Which is hard! It goes against my nature.
Like..... Using his own phrasing on him or talking to him the way he talks to me or our Son doesn’t make him care about how those things hurt us. But it hurts him if I used it on him because he knows it’s mean and condescending, and to get ME to stop using it on HIM, he’ll stop using it on us.
Which I need to start doing with “perception”. He likes to switch out perception for opinion because opinions can’t be wrong but perceptions can and then he can just say your perception of his actions and behavior are wrong when you call him out on being an asshole.
But it also worked to get him to stop trying to derail a conversation about his behavior and how it affects the people around him with “I’m a bad person” when I started replying with “Yep. You could work on that.” instead of trying to placate him and make him feel better. Though that did just lead to the whole perception vs opinion problem.
He’ll always find some way to shift the blame.
