thank you so much for your kind words about my fic ;_;. that's one of the fics i'm proudest of and i'm happy it's still getting hits two years later. i'm also baffled by the lack of gen fic for both post lottl and eot. from what i've seen while searching, the most popular way to do post-ytnw as to include it as a hurt/comfort element in a jack/ianto fic. and no shade on that but it's really only one way to get at the emotional scar the ytnw left on everyone who remembers it. idk if it's the fandom's neutral at best relationship to martha or a general disinterest in writing gen fic but it blows my mind. what baffles me MORE is the lack of EU content about everything surrounding the ytnw (Saxon campaign, actual year, and post). there are so many gaps here to capitalize on. it's this massive playground and it's basically unexplored in the EU. the year of martha jones audio BF put out is pretty good but it's basically the only full-length work in this category afaik. other than that it's a few short stories. super weird to me.
meant to reply to this sooner, sorry! you’re very welcome, it’s a brilliant story that digs into the emotional consequences for Martha, Jack, and Lucy and explores the like. practical real world cleanup of the ytnw and end of time.
(the fic we’re talking about is when i close my eyes, i hear more screams than anyone could ever be able to count.)
I’ve gotten used to seeing lots of well-written gen fic for the thirteenth doctor era, and the ytnw is a massively traumatic event where the ramifications aren’t really explored in canon, so I totally expected there to be a lot of gen fics for this timeframe too, and…..really there isn’t much, at least not on ao3. so I extra appreciate that you wrote and shared this, it’s The post-ytnw fic for me right now.
and good point about the EU! I haven’t listened to the Martha audios because I’ve been limiting my BF purchasing mostly to Gallifrey in recent years. but also Martha was my first favorite companion, and I loved her in LotT and imprinted on that episode as a baby fan, and there’s that hesitance of “are they gonna do a good job with a character I love?” but glad to hear you thought it was pretty good, and it’s definitely something I’m interested in listening to at some point! but yeah it really is one of those empty spaces where so much could be done—it’s the apocalypse, essentially, and even though they don’t end up remembering, all the old companions (and future companions!) on Earth lived through it, too, and that creates even more story possibilities.

idk i feel like the approach the flashfam fandom is taking to bart's mentorship with wally and max is. a lottle bit too simplistic for how it really is.
it is true that it would be fairer if he picked up max's legacy instead of flash. when no one else was willing to put up with him, max accepted to take care of him and train him. bart learned -with or without success- patience and rationality, plans and meditation. that was his first approach to his powera, the way he got to forge them.
and it is true that wally contributed almost nothing, especially at first. to say that he hated him would be wrong (if that's what you think, you probably don't have many older or younger cousins), but he had difficulties dealing with bart's hyperactivity, and he had a hard time putting up with him.
but it is also true that flash is a legacy hero by nature. wally is the third flash already, and it's implied that there will be many others. now, at the time when bart was introduced, there were no other kids, since jai and irey weren't even in wally and linda's plans yet. therefore, bart was the youngest of the family, the only person from the next generation (i know jesse was there, but she isn't much younger than wally, so even if she were to become the flash she wouldn't last long). it was natural that bart would be the next in line for the flash cape.
the thing is actually pretty nuanced, if you think about it a little bit, and even if i still don't like geoff johns' portrayal of bart, there's no right answer at the question if bart should become mercury or flash

I’ve just watched the doctor falls and am I going mad or did they never even mention the drums once?? Like I never expected them to carry that theme on with other Masters because it was something quite unique to RTD, but then when simm!master returned they just never even acknowledged it? Yet the last time we saw that incarnation he was on the verge of tears to the doctor saying he didn’t know what he’d be without them? Anyway I just feel like it sums up that they went to the trouble of bringing him back despite not wanting to acknowledge any aspects of the character at all (apart from a couple of small references to LotTL like calling the doctor grandad)
Tumblr media
Not once is it mentioned, no.  I genuinely think Moffat omitted it not because he believed that, by the close of End of Time Part 2, the arrival of Gallifrey through the Timelock resolved the Drums (although that is MY personal headcanon), but because they were a motif of suffering and too sympathetic.  He wanted to force Simm into a reductive “bad impenitent Master” box, and Gomez into an equally reductive “listens to the Doctor and is willing to compromise herself and is therefore the good Master” box.  Therefore Simm had to make forced, out of place lines like “you don’t have empathy now, do you?” and “is the future going to be all girl?” (don’t even get me started on how RTD and Moffat made a TIME LORD from a post-gender planet full of elite telepaths who use machines to reproduce into a common twentieth-century human sexist, it is my number one pet peeve lmao ).
Therefore Simm had to be evil just for the sake of being evil. Therefore any source of trauma or stress had to be eradicated from the fandom’s collective memory, including the HIGHLY complicated iconography of the Drums, which resonates with A LOT of fans  (for instance, the neurodiverse and chronically ill).
That was the only way to make Missy the unequivocal “hero” Master completing a (really troubling and problematic) "Rehabilitation” that existed entirely to establish the Doctor’s idea of morality as The One True Way.  The Doctor Falls ruined the Master and, I would argue, Missy, in order to make the Doctor look like the tragic superhero, the stuff of legends, the untouchable, the Impossible To Understand.  To wit, Moffat’s own masturbatory Superego persona, a wacky “smart” white man who sighs and suffers to put up with all the cute dumb lesser beings that he has to babysit, but is himself ineffably brilliant and mysterious and sexy.   (p.s. I love Twelve, especially when written by someone who is not Moffat. he was so warped ooc in series 10).
Mind, Moffat makes sure that (most of) the Doctor’s other actions are infallible, which further muddies the waters for any Simm fans.  I certainly agree with the Doctor’s actions re the Mondasian ship, and rescuing the families and children on that platform, and I certainly roundly condemn the Master weaponizing robots made from living people to his advantage.  But that doesn’t excuse erasing all memory of the character development around coping with and overcoming the Drums in order to (often Moffat’s raison d’etre) make the Doctor this superhuman hero figure, instead of the regular, eccentric bloke he’d always been.
And I think it’s interesting that as soon as the reins are handed over to Chibnall, he brings back the Drums: in Spyfall Part 2, with the famous Morse code scene.
But the worst thing that’s happened since The Doctor Falls? Anyone who’s a fan of Simm is presumed some kind of sexist as well: when we are just as likely to condemn the Doylist reasons for Simm’s behavior, which so many other fans mistake as Watsonian reasons.  Moffat has weaponized his stans against people who love Simm’s Master.  He has made his performative allyship seem somehow more “righteous.”
As convolutedly meta as ever, so very characteristic of him, Moffat has turned his stans into little Twelfth Doctors who are Misunderstood But Always Right, whose job it is to straighten out the Missys in the fandom, and condemn and give up on the Simms.  It makes a tidy, satisfying little narrative for media consumption and wokeness, you see.

I guess I'm kind of confused what you dislike about Simm. Do you dislike him as an actor or just the fandom around his Master? Or a lovely combination of both? I'm honestly curious and mean no disrespect. Thank you.
No disrespect taken! :)
I’ve got nothing against John Simm—he’s always seemed like a good egg—it’s a combination of the writing for his Master, the way RTD made him portray the character (which wasn’t actually how Simm wanted to play him), and certain parts of the fandom.
I just fundamentally disagree with almost everything about RTD’s interpretation of the Master, and I hate the way Simm!Master spawned so many misconceptions about the character in fandom. When Gomez arrived, she was a breath of fresh air that cleared away some of the things I hated most about the Master in New Who, like the drums. There are still times when she’s a bit more Simm-ish than I would prefer, but overall I’ve always felt she was much more faithful to earlier incarnations of the character than he was. And she was unapologetically evil (“No, I’ve not turned GOOD!”) so there was none of the “poor lonely little boy who was hurt and manipulated by mean ol’ Rassilon into being evil” nonsense, which probably wasn’t entirely the message RTD meant to convey in TEoT but it was certainly what a lot of fans took away because fandom loves a young white male woobie villain.
Ten also happens to be the Doctor I care about least, and one of my favourite things about the Master has always been their relationship with the Doctor, so it was disappointing to end up with a dynamic I had absolutely no investment in, and in fact actively annoyed me (particularly Ten forgiving Simm and going to great lengths to try to save him, which would be nice if he hadn’t committed mass genocide against the human race in TSoD/LotTL and if THE FATE OF THE UNIVERSE wasn’t at stake in TEoT). I much preferred Twelve’s dynamic with the Master, where he treats her gently at times and would forgive her if he could, but also doesn’t take any shit from her and knows he can’t put her life above anyone else’s. I realise Ten and Twelve are at very different places character-wise, so I can understand why Ten behaves the way he does, it’s just not a Doctor/Master dynamic that I personally find compelling.
Anyway, all of this said, I’m glad other people are able to get something out of Simm!Master’s character, so I’m not saying he’s objectively bad, he just does absolutely nothing for me and is the last Master I want to see come back. But I’m going to try not to judge the actual content of his episode(s) until I see them.
