The Sims 4 Amber House Pack!
It's time to create your own mission style dream house, with this collection of 345 brand new and hella cool build/buy mode items, inspired by Dontnod's "Life is Strange: Before the Storm" game.

DISCLAIMER: Simsi45 or The Sims 4 Amber House Pack is NOT affiliated or associated with Electronic Arts, Square Enix, Deck Nine or Dontnod in ANY way. This is a purely fanmade pack made by me, a fan of both games that wanted to get the best of both worlds.
FEATURES:
 345 new items (including sofas, tables, decor, windows, doors and much much more!)
 Search for "amberhouse", "lis", "simsi45" to find most of the items in the build/buy catalog.
 Custom original names and descriptions. (the best I could come up with :P)
 Tons of custom recolors (based on original textures) to mix and match items more easily.
 Heavy modification on original meshes and textures, including english text turned into simlish.
 Everything has been playtested thoroughly.
 Included are a couple of easter egg items from The Sims 2 that I thought fit the theme well.
New lot I made showcased in the trailer and pics (found in the gallery under my tag @simsi45_mods) a recreation of Rachel Amber's house.

LOT INSTALLATION:
Included in the pack is the lot recreation of the Amber House that's featured in the pictures and videos.
You can get the lot by:
Using the gallery. Make a search under my EA id: @simsi45_mods and download the lot as usual. I've included customized pictures to identify my own lot more easily. Make sure you have the "enable custom content" tag ENABLED for the lot to show up in the results.
If you have difficulties using the gallery you can download the lot tray files from the bottom of the post, and move them inside your own tray folder. This can be found in your documents/electronic arts/the sims 4/ tray folder. This way you can install the lot without the need of the gallery.
NOTES:
~ The pack is in an EARLY-ACCESS STATE! I have dedicated a lot of time to test everything but I'm a team of just a single person. If you find any issues please let me know so I can take a look.
~ Because of the amount of items the size of the pack is quite big. I tried my best to make everything as compact as possible with the final size being 1.5 GB of required free space. 
~ The majority of the meshes and textures of these items are ripped straight from the LIS: Before the Storm game, and then each individual item (both mesh and textures) has been heavily modified and edited to fit and function properly within the Sims 4 game's engine. That's why some items will look identical to the original game, some look somewhat different, and some are brand new meshes I made using the original items.
~ Some of the original ripped meshes' poly counts were WAY too high so I had to lower the polygons so The Sims 4 wouldn't explode when filling a lot with them. I lowered the polygons and edited most of the items as much as possible without compromising their original look too much. In other words I tried to find the best balance between looks and performance and after lots of testing on my moderate PC system, I can confirm the game runs super smoothly on my end.

BACKSTORY ABOUT THE PACK (no spoilers):
This pack started with an idea I got back in 2017 when I first played Life Is Strange Before The Storm. When visiting the Amber house, I immediately fell in love with it as I am huge fan of the craftsman architectural style, it's literally all I'd want my dream house to be. The art team has done an incredible job on it, and as I personally find the art style of the Life is Strange series and The Sims 4 to fit very well with each other, I wanted to make these assets available for The Sims 4. Of course back then this all seemed impossible, however a few years later in 2020 during quarantine I revisited the idea as it had been stuck on my wishlist ever since.
To make a long story short, this project has been in the works for about 3 years now, and after a lot of hard work, head scratching and quite a few sleepless nights I managed to overcome all the obstacles I came across (which were a lot mind you) and I'm honestly hoping you'll be as pleased with the results as I am. Seriously this exceeded my expectations as it started as a small little pack for my personal use, to what I'd consider an expansion pack's (or even more) worth of build/buy content.
INSTALLATION:
Due to the size of the pack I had to split it up into multiple parts. You will need a .RAR extractor unpack it. More specifically:
1 -> Download ALL 6 parts of the pack and put them ALL in the same folder. 2 -> Right click the 1st part .RAR file named "Simsi45 - The Sims 4 Amber House Pack.part1" and click "Extract Here"   3 -> Once that's finished a package file will appear, this is the entire pack and you can now move that into The Sims 4/Mods. Simple as that!

DIY LoZ Sheikah Slate
Thought it's about time I shared the birthday gift I made for my bestie @tsukinoshinjiu! It's a custom Sheikah Slate! So I'm gonna share how I made it... (finished images at the bottom!)
First I started by looking at in-game references for it and getting a general feel of what it looks like, what pieces I'd need, and what the general shape would be like. I wanted it to be a special box of sorts, so they could hide little treasures or letters...

After getting the general feel of the colors and shapes I'd need as well as what would be sunken and what would pop out, I looked for some measurements I could base myself off of. Luckily I found a Reddit post of someone who'd already done the hard work for me.

I tweaked the sizes slightly (namely putting them in a measurement system I could actually understand) then opened up SketchUp to model it out and simulate my rough idea.
I really wanted to stay true to the rounded corners, so I went for a layered technique, using 3 mm wooden slates.
So I created a "base" piece, a "body" piece, and a "lid" piece. In the end, it ended up being 5 body pieces, 1 base, and 1 lid. (And no, I didn't have access to 6 mm wood, otherwise, I'd simply done 2 6mm pieces for the body instead) In total, the depth was roughly 2.2 cm

Once that was ready, I laid out a simple graphic for my cutter. In it you can see the measurements:
Height: 25,33 cm (~10 in.)
Width: 15,33 cm (6 in.)
Depth: 2.2 cm (0.8 in.)

(yes I named it 6mm, I mistyped dw about it) Once that was done, I looked at the front again and opened up Illustrator to make the vector path for the cutter. I had barely used Illustrator before so I had to learn while I was doing it *sweats* but I got it done, and here's what it looks like. I saved it as .eps (vector) so the cutter could read it.

Once that was done, all that was left was to wait for the cutter to be done with my pieces....

Then I immediately started painting and organizing! Decided to start with something small, so I chose the little triangles, I took them apart and painted each piece individually, then with some scotch tape I held them together and put them aside. Next I painted the main piece as well as the lid, body, and base. I glued the layers first then painted them, same with the rest. The handle was especially fun to do and I think it turned out especially pretty. Always working my way up to the smaller colors. Once all those pieces were painted I glued them in place.

The little lines really tested my pulse *sweats again* I don't think they're perfect, but I tried my best (the circle around the eye is especially scuffed)
Not pictured (because I forgor) I made little stops on the bottom of the lid so it could stay in place and be used as a box. I used some thick 2mm hard grey board to make 4 little rounded stops and glued them to the bottom of the lid. When I was done, I sprayed the entire thing in a shiny finisher!

The inside had a special engraving since I'd originally wanted to throw in the Korok Bookmark I'd made for them in there as a surprise, but since this gift had lagged behind for a while, the bookmark was sent ahead of time along with the other goodies I'd prepared for their bday.
Once it was all ready I threw in some other goodies inside and packaged it for the mail! They got it last week and the reaction was...

In the end, the slate arrived a little later than I had wanted, but it got there in one place and the unboxing video I got from them was priceless hehehe.
So yea, that was my adventure making a custom Sheikah Slate as a bday gift! If I eventually remake it, I'll try to make it look even closer to the original.
And if anyone would like to try their hand at making it, go ahead! If there's interest for the files I'll find a way to make them available as well.

giffing tutorial
hiii so here's a walkthrough on how to make your gifs clean, crisp, and colorful :-) it's literally so much fun, it's one of my favorite hobbies, i hope y'all enjoy too!!
first off here's what you're going to need
photoshop
this gif sharpening automation
a clip you want to gif! preferably in the highest resolution you can find, 1080p is generally my minimum
adobe premiere (optional, but nice to have only for step 1)
let's get started!
step 1: creating your clip
first off, we need a shorter clip than the average tv episode or movie length. choose a scene or shot you'd like to gif. for this tutorial, i'll be giffing a scene from NOPE (2022) as an example.
now, this next part is semi-optional, it just depends on how smooth you want your gifs to be and what access you have to other platforms.
most movies and TV shows are filmed at a framerate of 23.976 frames per second, while youtube and other online videos tend to be 30fps. you can check the framerate of a video file by right clicking > properties > details

however, if i clip out a scene using the built-in windows video trim tool, it will create the clip at 30fps, causing it to lose some smoothness and look just slightly choppier. and giffing is all about trying to minimize choppiness one small step at a time.
here's where premiere comes in. if you have premiere, go ahead and open it up and create a project. i have one just for gif clip exports. if you don't have premiere, you can either retain the framerate by importing the full original file into photoshop (step 2) or clip it and just work with it in 30fps. no worries either way, in the grand scheme of things it's not that big of a difference and we can still make the gifs super pretty.
open up the full file in premiere's source monitor and locate the section you want to clip. use the mark in/mark out buttons (or the "i" and "o" hotkeys) to select your clip range

then hit ctrl+M or File > Export > Media to export your clip. premiere will automatically set the export settings to match the framerate and resolution of the source clip unless you've used a different preset recently, so make sure the preset menu says "Match Source - Adaptive High Bitrate," name your file, decide where you want it, and hit export.
step 2: importing into photoshop
you're going to import your clip into photoshop by selecting File > Import > Video Frames to Layers, then picking which clip you want to gif. as you can see in my screenshot, i have this set as a keybind* to alt+shift+ctrl+i to make it faster

this will cause a menu to pop up where you can select the part of the clip you'd like to import into photoshop. now that the maximum gif size is 10mb, you can do pretty long gifs, depending on how much movement is in the clip. generally each gif can be a few seconds, but it's up to your discretion.
the clip markers aren't very precise, so don't worry about getting too perfect with the clipping here, you can shave off frames as you please throughout the rest of the process. when you have your range determined, hit OK and it'll bring us into photoshop proper!
*to set a keybind, go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts
step 3: prepping for coloring
each frame of the clip will be imported as an individual layer. it's subjective, but i've come to like my gifs having a range of about 40-140 frames, depending on how long i need them to be.
you want to make sure your workspace setting is set to "motion," so you can see the frame timeline across the bottom of your screen, like this:

you can select this workspace setting with the dropdown menu in the top right corner.
next up, scroll to the end of your timeline and shift click the last frame, selecting all the frames. click the carrot next to the number under the frames (the number in my example is "0.04") and select "other" to change the frame delay. i normally use 0.05 or 0.06, depending on how slow and dramatic i'd like the gifs to be. for this one, we'll do 0.06.
now hit "C" to open your crop tool. if you want those nice big gifs people make a lot, i'd recommend putting in 4:3 into the ratio bar at the top. you obviously don't have to crop at all; it depends on how you want it to look. hit enter when you have your crop how you like it to complete the action

select Image > Image Size or hit alt+ctrl+i to change the size of your gif. no matter what cropping you have, the width of your gif (if you want it to be the only one on its horizontal row in the tumblr post) MUST BE 540PX!! this is tumblr's ideal width for an image post** and will keep it from stretching or compressing when you post it. so go ahead and type "540" into the width column and hit enter.
now, make sure all of your frames on the timeline are still selected, go to the hamburger menu on the top right of the timeline, and select "Flatten Frames Into Layers"

go to the layer panel on the right (NOT the timeline), scroll past all the layers labeled "Frame [1, 2, 3, etc]" until you hit the first one labeled "Layer [number]." click the first layer, then scroll down and shift click to select all the layers labeled "Layer," and hit backspace or the little trash bin icon to delete them. we only want the ones labeled "Frame" now.
click the "Convert to video timeline" button on the bottom left of the timeline, right under the first frame!

so your screen should now look like this:

shift click the last frame (at the top) to select all your frames, right click any frame in the layer panel on the right, and select "Convert to Smart Object." this will compress all your frames into one dynamic layer photoshop knows is supposed to move.
**540px is ideal for one image in a row, 268px if you're putting two gifs next to each other, and 160px for three in a row.
step 4: COLORING <3
if you downloaded that gif sharpening tool i linked at the top, find it in the folder it downloaded to and double click to import it into photoshop. this should open the "Actions" tab, which essentially allows users to program in a series of actions in a certain order that they can make photoshop execute when you hit "play" on the action. for example, i had one that essentially did all of step 3 for me before my computer died last winter.
anyway, make sure your smart object is selected in the layer panel, open up the actions tab, select "glossy sharpening," and hit the play button. this is a nice sharpening tool i like that takes out a very difficult step, but if you'd like to play around with your own sharpening settings and get it how you like go ahead!

here's what it will look like after executing the actions.
now, remember what i said about the framerate in step 1? here's where that comes in. if your clip is in 30fps, you can skip this part because photoshop defaults to 30fps motion editing. if your clip (like mine) is in 23.976fps then click the same hamburger menu we clicked for "Flatten Frames Into Layers" before and click on "Set Timeline Frame Rate." Choose the correct framerate from the drop down menu and hit OK.
now for the best part: customizing your coloring!! go ahead and click the folder icon in the bottom right to create a group in your layer panel, but don't put your base layers in here. this is going to be for your color editing layers.
the icon right next to the group icon, the circle with a clear half and an opaque half, is now your best friend. this gives us our adjustment layers. the first one we're going to use, and by far the best one, is levels. levels is magical.

levels basically works by you telling it what "white" and "black" means by selecting pixels in the image. generally you want to use the "white" eyedropper to select the brightest pixel you can find and the "black" eyedropper to select the darkest.
this has the amazing power of being able to smoothly lighten or de-fog or clarify images. now, darker images are always going to be harder to make look good, and there's only so much you can do. but that "so much" is endlessly expanded if you mess around with levels, especially if you layer levels layers on top of each other, then right click > Blending Options > and mess with the fill opacity.

note: the levels layer i'm editing is at 28% fill opacity and 71% regular opacity, which is why it didn't entirely deep-fry the image when i clicked on a mid-grey with the white selection eyedropper.
after messing around with levels until i'm satisfied, i'll add a "vibrance" layer and boost it until it looks good. i also like adding a "color balance" layer and playing with it. for this one i'm adding a bit of blue to the shadows and a bit of cyan and red to the highlights. it's also been trendy lately, especially in gifs of people talking, to add a "hue & saturation" layer and desaturate the yellows by a lot while emphasizing other colors, like here:

after you have your colors how you like, i recommend toggling the visibility of the group a few times to see what you've done! it's so satisfying to look at the change between the base layer and the coloring you've made.
step 5: text
i try to keep my text pretty standard, but you can get creative with it as you please. to add text you can hit "T" to toggle your text tool or select it from the left tools panel. when you click to add the text it'll create the layer starting from wherever your playhead is, so make sure you move it on the timeline to line it up with the start of the gif. drag the end of the text layer on the timeline to make sure it's the same length as the gif so you don't get empty frames when you export. i like 18pt text, and i use the font Gadugi, but i've also used Calibri before.
caption colors for gifs come from broadcast caption colors, meaning that the first person to speak is given white captions, the second person is given yellow, and the third is given teal, although you can do whatever. i normally use:
1st person: #FFFFFF
2nd person: #fcbe11
3rd person: either a more muted orange or a soft teal
you also want to make sure your text is centered by clicking the center paragraph toggle on the top of the screen while your text layer is selected. using the move tool ("v" or the tool on the top of the toolbar) you can center on the guidelines photoshop gives you. i generally like my text pretty much as close to the bottom as it can get without getting cut off.
once all that's sorted, go over to the "fx" button on the same row as the adjustment layer and group/folder buttons. we're going to add a stroke and drop shadow.

the stroke adds an outline. i do 2px, postition set to outside, normal blend mode, 100% opacity and solid black (#000000)
the drop shadow is more malleable because it depends on how the text looks based on the scene it's overlaying. i tend to change it up to make the text the most legible i can, but here's the settings i start from:

step 6: exporting
to export as a gif, go to File > Export > Save For Web (Legacy) or ctrl+shift+alt+S. this will bring up a menu to configure your export settings, and will tell you how big the gif is going to be (in megabytes) after the export. as mentioned earlier, you want it to be less than 10mb. if you use the beta post editor, try to keep it under 9.8mb because for some reason the beta post editor tends to thing gifs that are almost 10mb are actually over the limit.

you can see the gif size in the bottom left, 6.507mb, so we're good to go. if your gif IS to big you can go back into the timeline and shorten it by dragging the edges of the timeline layers. if you drag the base layers (the ones labeled "Frame [x]" and "Frame [x] copy") the group above it will conform to that length, but the text layer will not, so you have to manually drag that layer too.
make sure the settings in the top right panel match mine to avoid export errors, and in the bottom right make sure it says "Looping Options: Forever" or you'll have a gif that will only play once.
to double check that you like your gif and see it properly, you can click "preview" in the bottom left. this will open a tab in your browser to view it in its final size and playback speed. if you don't like it, you can go back and tweak it however you want.
so that's that! we've got a gif.

i know this may seem like a lot, but once you get in the groove (or make some automations or keybinds!) it gets a lot faster and the satisfaction of making a good, pretty gif is so nice. i happened to choose a really dark scene to gif for this one so it's not my best work but it was just an example lol.

Unfortunately no, there are a few reasons for this.
1) I have very little ability to actually scale influence over other blogs? I can't tell if I am relatively big on here and thus have influence that can do good or if I am smaller and so if I called out people it would just look petty. If I then look petty, other individuals with genuine evidence against these will then be lumped in with me diminishing them
2) I haven't been on Tumblr in about a year
3) I live on the other side of the planet compared to most of you. Essentially, all of the drama and Goss in the hypnokink community happens when I am asleep. I tend to often wake-up and realise that something massive happened. Additionally, because of the timezone difference I actually don't interact naturally with larger creators. Some of the bigger people have been called out like Neural Nets and Nimja. I think while we have these big tists being called out, the threat of mistreatment often seems to be from smaller tists due to their ability to go under the radar.
4) Other hypnotists and members do a great job at this, I am not skirting responsibility but relative to others, I am inadequate. I will always, always, always recommend @pruning-the-minds-garden. While I will always say be critical of who you follow and the posts the post, this creator often seems to have a solid ethical and moral guideline and effectively calls out toxic tists.
5) There is only one person I would ever want to call out who is a tist. I have had plenty of shitty subs and that's what it is but I complained about it in one of my files. This creator often posts videos or gifs of their hypnotic subjects. It seems they get the consent to post the videos and gifs while they are still in trance. After the tist is bored of the subs, they will block the sub but leave the gif and video up. I personally think you cannot get consent while in trance. I haven't named them because they seem to get the blog flagged and reported each month (good) however they just re-upload everything to a new blog. The evidence I have is circumstantial however I have been in this community long enough to know a bad egg. If you know of a tist who constantly needs to remake their blog, I guarantee it is because they have been reported for unconsentual posting of images and sexual assault
6) Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone. When I was learning to hypnotise, I did shitting things. I have never shied away from this truth, however I deeply regret it. I won't go into details but I have been a toxic tists at certain points without realising it. I feel I have learnt and changed but regardless the damage I may have caused has been done

will there be a safe file coming for pine spring island?
As I said in the original post (under creator notes), I won’t create a population for PSV, even if it’s in a save file (or, I should say, especially if it’s a save file).
But -and maybe it can help you- here’s how I set up unpopulated worlds with the use of Nraas Porter (I have no idea how many simmers use this mod, but it's an amazing tool to quickly have a populated town ready to play). You can pack/unpack an entire population with a few clicks and have the benefit of maintaining the existing relationships between households.
Mini-tutorial time:
Let's say you want some of the population from Sunset Valley (SV) in Pine Spring Valley (PSV).
Load up a new game in Sunset Valley. Once you get in live mode, pause the game (extremely important), click on the roof / walls of any occupied house and choose Nraas -> Porter -> Pack.

2 The mod will open up a new window listing all the households in town
Choose which households you want to have in your new town. For PSV I'd say you can save up to 16 households which is okay, since Appaloosa Plains has 17 in total (16-18 households is the medium amount of households required for a normal gameplay in any world, regardless of the size of that world).
Also,  DON'T choose NPC households like Alien Household or Mermaid Household. These will be generated by the game once you start playing in the new town.

3. After you made you selection, a new window will pop up listing all the sims in the selected households (with names and portraits). Click "all" or select them individually. It’s good to pack up full households though.

4.   You’ll be asked to give a name to the new household. I named mine SV_simmies.

5. Now the mod will start packing up the selected households (for me it took about 5 minutes for the packing to be done, but depending on the size and number of the households the duration will vary).

6. You'll get a message at the end saying that the process has been successful.

This is how the Porter’s saved household looks like in the library:

7. Load up Pine Spring Valley.
Move anyone in town, preferably on an empty lot so the houses will all be available for Nraas Porter to fill them up. The sim(s) you just moved in can be removed afterwards anyway.
Or you can move in the sims you want to play if you already have them, and in this case there’s no need to remove anyone.
8. Pause the game!!! Click on the roof / walls of any empty house and choose Nraas -> Porter -> Unpack and select your saved household from SV.

9. Wait for the unpacking to be done (usually. 1-3 minutes).
At the end you’ll get a pop up telling you how many households have been successfully moved in or failed (rarely the case, given that you have enough houses in the world).
You’ll also get notifications telling you which household moved into which house.

If needed, now you can “Anihilate” the sim(s) you first moved in or go in Edit Town, evict and then delete them (my most preferred method of removing them / haven’t encountered any issues so far).
* You should also check in Edit Town if the houses are suitable for the amount of sims in each individual household (I had a family of 6 being moved into a starter, for instance...repeatedly). Move them around by evicting and moving them into a new house. I’m saying this because if you use Nrass Story Progression they will be audited (if the option is enabled) and will require a proper house later, during gameplay.
** Another advantage of using Porter is that your packed population will stay in the library and can be used over and over again with new unpopulated worlds. Unless you delete it (the same as you would delete any other household saved via game, if anyone was wondering).
Additional tips for safe porting:
1. If you decide you want to move your population after a while of playing in a world to another one:
Sims across town will fill up their “pockets” with all kinds of things so it’s advisable to clean up their inventories after porting them. Not to mention that Porter will also save their fridge inventories (cooked food and ingredients), just like the game does for individual households. So you may end up with hundreds of eggs, tomatoes and apples in the world. 
Under City Hall -> Master Controller -> Town -> Object Stats ->Inventory you’re going to see the current inventory of all the sims you’ve just ported. You can delete/flush from here things you don’t want. DO NOT DELETE THEIR PHONES!!!!!!!!! (it will lead to corruption). Additionally, the books and toys you’ll see in this list include the items from bookshelves, toy boxes as well as sims' pockets. The bookshelves will be replenished if you happen to delete the books, I’m not sure about the toys since I never delete them.

2. You might save households containing tombstones (like I did here with the Goths)
The tombstones will always be placed in the mausoleum upon porting so you can send one of your sims to the graveyard to get them out of the mausoleum and place them down or inside their inventory.
OR 
Under City Hall -> Master Controller -> Town -> Manage the dead the mausoleum will open and this will allow you to retrieve the tombstones.
3. The house you clicked on to unpack your population will always retain the household’s name you gave it when saving via Porter, in my case: SV_simmies. You can check which household has been moved in there with NRaas MC or Edit Town and rename it accordingly.
To rename it with NRaas MC: click on the house and select NRaas->Master Controller->Change Name.
That’s about it.

retrospective on a recent mild brain crash
here's how much fiction I've been writing this year. About mid-month I hit a good clip – between then and now I averaged 1400 words a day

Most of that was on one project. Most of my projects are speculative, "I have one cool idea, let's see where it goes" – they go nowhere, I'm mostly okay with that. This one I had a clear idea of the overall shape. I named the file "sufyan short.md" like one of those people in high infant mortality cultures who give babies placeholder names because they don't want death to notice that there's something to cut down
anyway it's a novella
The only two novellas I've ever completed, I got out in like, a week or two, putting everything else on my life on hold. So I had a vague background belief that if I didn't complete this project this month it was doomed. I don't think I explicitly said to myself, "It's this month or bust," because that would be an Unhelpful Self Pressuring Thought / Irrational Catastrophizing. But it turns out I believe that anyway & have been acting like I believe it. Taking stock of all the hours and energy I have and allocating it precisely between software job, novella, partners
I crashed (spent a few days feeling simultaneously fine & on the verge of some implosion, then rapid onset depressive episode yesterday), and have felt kind of mystified by this whole thing. It's been long enough since I pushed myself this hard this long that I don't quite know what to take away. Imagine if much of your life was dedicated to building the tower of babel, and each time god demolished it around ten stories. Then, somehow, things really came together and you got a hundred stories up. Then god came around to demolishing it. The landing, of course, was harder than usual. And you blink and try to take some lesson away from it – did you go too fast? was god mad about the workers not having enough breaks? was the foundation unsound? – but it all sounds like nonsense when you're still trying to process "we got to a hundred stories this time? we only do that about once every five years! should we just try the same thing over again?"
The crash leadup felt like... just... being obsessed with my project. There's a sliding scale from "manic about project, words gushing out of me" to "not making any progress but anxiously thinking about it all the time, turning it over and over in my mind to find the next entry point from which I can grow it further". When I slid from the former to somewhere in the middle, I didn't notice that this was bad
When I got consciously anxious about the project I was like "oh that's silly, let's shut down that anxious thought" but I didn't take the time to look at the… non-explicit/verbal ways I was anxious about it? Like, my attention was constantly rapid-flickering back to the novella even when I wasn't working on it
Scheduling explicit blocks of time for writing hasn't worked for me in the past, so my writing strategy is "when my brain spits out the next bit that it wants to write, immediately sit down and get going". So I'm frequently in a state of "not doing anything in particular but open to the urge". So each individual instance of rapid-flickering didn't seem bad, because it could be the prelude to gathering enough momentum that I sit down and pound out another 2000. It only looks bad when I step back and notice the ratio of thinking to writing is quite high. I've been quite productive the past two weeks, but my efficiency was a lot lower than Carnot efficiency.
And because I was mostly paying attention to output and not efficiency, I went "things are going really great! keep cranking!" and then, splat.
Anyway, takeaway thoughts/ideas from the latest wreckage of Babel.
This may not be possible, but the best way to reduce "it's now or never" anxiety is to trust myself to come back to the project. If I had to spit out a reasonable timeframe for someone else to complete this novella, I'd say 3 months. But because I don't think I can trek that long, I gave myself like 10 days. The better I am at sticking to long term projects, the easier I can drive myself
It's fine to be obsessive, but maybe set aside 4 hours in a day when I'm absolutely not allowed to think about it?
This has never worked for me, but maybe I should try just blocking out time every day to work on the fic. I'm in the unusual-for-me position of having a lot of scenes left but few unknowns – where you'd expect mechanical plodding to be most effective.
One issue I have is that I have a lot of "work" activities and "zombie" activities but few "relaxing" activities, so when I have some energy but don't want to push myself, I end up either being a zombie (which I then regret) or working (which burns me out). I suspect the intermediate level is consuming fiction.
My 1-2 nights of insomnia a week are a big deal. It is time to hold my nose and grovel at psychiatrists until one gives me Ambien. I'm guessing this is one of the highest impact things I can do for health and productivity.
Similarly 'low hanging' fruit is dramatically improving my cardiovascular fitness. I've been plateaued on the c25k schedule for a few months. More on this in a separate post.

While I was able to use the holiday Monday at work to catch up on stuff I haven't been able to do in the last six weeks I've been doing my job alone, I spent way more of that time than I wanted to in trying to find a way around Excel breaking my labor saving spreadsheet by refusing to follow its own rules.
I help out my supervisor by turning the reports our phone system generates into a chart of call times she can analyze for coverage purposes. There are two hurdles the way it generates the reports creates. One of them is that the date, beginning time, and ending time, are all in the same cell of its line, and the other is that if there's no active call time in that span, it will more likely than not skip that span.
The easiest way I've come up with to find those times it skipped is to break up the time stamps into separate date, start, and stop cells, and then use conditional formatting to highlight the start times that are different from the end time of the line above. Originally I was using text to columns to do this, but then I decided I wanted to automate that. I set up a spreadsheet that would take the file name of the report and fetch the date and time cell from it, then an array of cells using the MID function to pull out the individual pieces of it.
It worked great! I could just tell it the file to look at and it got the data I needed. And then I'd go to add a line for a skipped time span and all of the formulas would break, because they were referenced based on the line number, and Excel ever so helpfully updates those references when your data moves. But it's okay because if you don't want the reference to be updated, there's a character for that. To keep the same line number, use B$2 instead of B2.
I worked out a fancy formula with INDIRECT, LEFT, and the new to me FORMULATEXT function to automatically assemble a new version of the formula with the crucial absolute reference for each row, since the absolute meant it wouldn't update by line if I just filled down and I was not going into over 300 cells to add one character by hand.
EXCEPT! Marking the reference as absolute only freezes the reference for pasting and directional filling! It turns out it totally ignores the $ if you're shifting and inserting! Excel broke my plans because it doesn't follow its own rules!
After like two hours of beating my head against it and reading a bunch of forum help threads where the answer was "just use INDIRECT" when I was already using INDIRECT, using COUNTIF to count only the cells above that had data in them seemed promising, but it kept giving reference errors as part of the INDIRECT, probably because the COUNTIF syntax needs you to tell it what to look for, and I think the quotation marks around the asterisk weren't playing nicely with the quotation marks of the INDIRECT even though I was using " for the latter and ' for the former. Finally I started looking into other COUNT_____ functions and it turns out that plan old COUNT does exactly what I was looking for. Where "count cells that have data" with COUNTIF needs you to specify cells containing "*", COUNT just does it. By some miracle, I found the right syntax to have the INDIRECT assemble the COUNT with a range from B1 to (current cell) in only one or two tries, and now I finally have a formula that doesn't care if I add lines which are empty in the column it's looking at.
Now I just need to automate adding the missing rows and filling in the zero values in the column I'm doing this all for, but that seems beyond what I can do with just Excel on its own. Seems like something that would be simple to execute in Python if I export a CSV, and if I could get anything to work in VBasic I could probably do a macro, but I'd prefer not to step it out of Excel and back in, and I don't think our workstations have Python, and if they don't have it, I can't add it...

where y/n pulls the short straw and has to double up with spencer.
There is a chart within the BAU: a solid, concise graph that portrays, arguably the most, vital information within the FBI. Intricately designed, Garcia and Y/N had managed to construct a comprehensible guide to who in the team was the most pleasant to share a room with. At first it was a joke, originated from a slow day of nothing but paperwork Y/N had spent in Garcia's lair. Conversations arose, and soon after so did the chart.
It's built up on categories such as conversation, tidiness, sleeping conditions and even hygiene. There are ten available points per category, and Emily loses said ten points for sleeping conditions because her snores can be heard from China. The points are the basis of the game, essential in order to rank the team individually and compile them into a list of favourability. Spencer is at the bottom of that list.
"I don't get it, I'm a delight," Spencer argued, strolling alongside Morgan up the small flight of stairs to the BAU room. Another case had forced them to prepare for the jet in 30 minutes, but Hotch and the rest of the team had very different perspectives on preparation. Especially after what he said when they entered the room.
"Okay, before we start you should know I called ahead to book a hotel and they had limited rooms. We all have one but you're going to have to double up."
Y/N had never seen an American Western movie before, but she imagined that the cliché standoff looked a lot like what happened in the BAU room subsequent to that announcement. Those that had been sitting launched to their feet, uncaring to the chairs rolling free behind them. If someone was holding something it dropped onto the table, or even the floor. Communication faltered, and all anyone dared to do was stare at each other.
When Hotch looked up from his file, he had to do a double take because of the drastic change in atmosphere. His team were all standing metres apart; Y/N had a hand over her gun.
"I think we all know what this calls for," she said.
"Get it," Morgan gestured to the back of the room. Y/N's movement caused a surge of motion as everyone sat at the table attentively. Hotch tried to turn the attention back to the screen with the crime scene photos, but even JJ was more focused on the whiteboard rolling into the room.
Y/N stood by it's side, and on her way forced Hotch into a seat. She grabbed the top corner and flipped it over to reveal the coloured array of pie charts, bullet-points and bar charts.
"I still don't see why this is necessary," Spencer whined from the back of the room.
"I don't see why you've obviously spent more time and effort on this than any of your cases," Hotch added.
"Okay, you two are just jealous because you're at the bottom of the list," Y/N snarked, then addressed the team. "Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered here today, in holy matrimony, to judge your fellow coworkers and deem who is the least likeable. Spoiler alert: it's Spencer."
At this, the aforementioned agent threw his pen directly at Y/N's head. She shrieked, then turned to him with a glare as she tried to untangle it from her hair. He laughed wholeheartedly, and the team snickered not only at Spencer's attack but the way they were so obviously and obliviously in love with each other.
"This chart makes no sense! I mean, how do I only have five points for hygiene? We all know I'm the cleanest out of everyone here."
"I agree with you Spencer," Y/N said, "your hygiene is at a ten point standard but unfortunately people don’t want to compete with said ten point standard, so that loses you five points, gorgeous.”
Spencer didn't reply (only sulked into his seat), half because he's shocked by the injustice of the chart and the other half because he's shocked Y/N just called him gorgeous.
"Alright! The hat, please," She exclaimed, enticing Spencer from his trance. Garcia presented the fedora over the table, and Y/N began talking immediately when she saw Hotch's mouth open in objection because were they really using the fedora from the unsub they caught last week?
Only four people took turns in picking names out of the hat; ever since in incident in '04 where lack of coordination made for everyone picking a name of someone who had already picked someone else. It resulted in a few brawls when Morgan wouldn't budge from his choice of Garcia even though his name had been pulled by Reid.
It never took them long to pick names out of desperation, considering the name-picking determined how the next 24 + hours were going to go. So when Y/N picked out Spencer's name, no one blamed her when she practically collapsed to the floor.
"That's karma," Spencer said upon her unraveling.
"I thought you didn't believe in karma," she sneered, stomping back onto her feet.
"In situations like these it seems to be the only viable explanation."
Y/N just rolled her eyes at him on her way out of the room, muttering under her breath that she'll be briefed when she's aboard, because she needed a moment alone for a pep-talk on how murdering your colleague apparently isn't socially acceptable.
On her way out, faintly in the background, Morgan caught sight of Emily and JJ fist-bumping victoriously, and realised that Y/N's demise more than certainly involved some foul play. Oh well, he thought, it'll make for good entertainment.

"I cannot believe you asked me why you lost seven points for conversation and then followed with that."
"What? What's wrong with science?"
"Oh, Spence, you're so gorgeous but so oblivious," Y/N sighed, exhausted from a mixture of jet lag and Spencer's enthusiastic take on the science of conversation. They had only just stepped foot in the room, and she was already drained from the mere thought of having to bunk with him for the next however many hours.
Y/N is quick to throw her things down as soon as they enter the room. She dumps her suitcase by the door and launches a few more things on the cabinets around her, then tries to ignore Spencer's sounds of distaste as she does this. She's frankly too tired to care, and jumps onto the bed without thinking; she's so enervated she doesn't even realise there's only the one bed.
"Why do you keep calling me that?" Spencer suddenly asks despite the silence that passed and the obvious fact that Y/N is trying to get some shut eye.
All he receives is an incomprehensible mumble from under the pillows, but he takes it as a response anyway.
"Why do you keep, uh, keep calling me 'gorgeous' I mean, I'm not, uh..." he stammers, fidgeting with the room key in his hands while he stands in front of the wardrobe to make it seem like he's doing something and doesn't care as much as he does.
"I'd say it's pretty self explanatory."
He senses the fatigue in her voice, so just leaves it with a shrug of his shoulders and a content smile, then goes to organising his array of sweater vests onto the hangers. When he's done with this, he turns around to make himself a coffee; taking a different approach to the jet lag than Y/N.
At the thought of her, he looks up to see her sprawled out across the bed. She's clutching onto a pillow and seems so relaxed that Spencer has to look away for a moment because he's more than certain he shouldn't be seeing a coworker like this. Nevertheless, he smiles upon her peaceful ambience, and hopes the boiling kettle doesn't disturb her too much.
When it's done brewing, Spencer sips the coffee cautiously and strides over to a small chair in the corner of the room. Here, Y/N's slumped figure is directly in his view, so he can't help but see her so casually on the bed. Wait, the bed... oh shit.
He knows that the chances of him getting the bed are slim. For one, Y/N's pretty much already claimed that territory, and, even if she hadn't, Spencer knew she'd put up one hell of a fight for it. He only hoped there were some extra blankets and pillows that could aid in making the floor at least somewhat comfortable.
"So, uh, Rock Paper Scissors for the bed?" He asks, then slurps his coffee. His voice rouses Y/N for a moment, and he's sure she's dozed back off again until his words sink in and she turns around to him with bleary eyes.
"What do you mean?"
"One bed. Two people," he says nervously and gestures to the space between them.
And it takes Y/N a moment. She looks from Spencer to the bed, then stares at the pillows for a long while, then she looks at Spencer again, then the bed. Then, she lets out a blood-curdling cry so loud that Reid has to cover his ears.
"Why!" She screams, slamming her hands down on the mattress. Spencer can't help but laugh, snickering behind his hand which only infuriates Y/N more.
"Okay, okay!" He moves to calm her down when he can practically see the steam coming out of her ears, "rock paper scissors, come on."
"Oh, I don't want to do that, Spence," she whines.
"Why? 'Cause you know you'll lose?" With his patronisation he raises an eyebrow at her when he approaches the end of the bed, his fist already raised. His condescension makes Y/N irrefutably stubborn, and she knows he's doing it on purpose -because he always does- but she doesn't care when it means she has a chance to beat Spencer at something.
"Fine," she grumbles. She sweeps the hair from her face and sits up straight, shuffling to the end of the bed and letting her legs dangle down; they brush against Spencer's own and he clears his throat amid the contact.
The slap of her fist against her palm indicates the beginning of the game. Y/N knows that she's unlikely to win, because Spencer is bound to have calculated some sure-fire plan to succeed in every round of Rock Paper Scissors.
This is why, when Spencer pulls paper and she pulls scissors, she screams in delight.
"No," Spencer says bluntly, then demands, "best out of three."
"Oh no," she chuckles, "it's never been that way before, it isn't now, gorgeous."
Spencer throws his head back in a groan, kneeling on the floor in defeat. He stays there because he figures he ought to become acquainted with it.

When nighttime rolls around, Y/N is pretty excited. She's already texted the BAU group chat a record seventeen times about the matter, yet somehow the team hasn't gotten sick of it thus far, and may even be more exhilarated than she is. It's the one good thing to come out of sharing a room with Spencer: that she gets to watch him wiggle in discomfort on his makeshift bed of blankets and pillows on the floor.
Except, when it comes down to it, it isn't that fun at all.
He's wriggling, yes, but it's doesn't exactly fulfil her with any satisfaction; if anything, it's just sad. He struggles to reach any form, never mind pinnacle, of relaxation, and Y/N actually feels pretty guilty at the subordination. So when the clock hits midnight and she's still hearing Spencer grunting when he hits a certain incessant bump in the carpet, she gives in and sits up.
Upon the sudden sound of bedsheets rustling, Spencer freezes because he thinks he's going to get shouted at, but it's the opposite that scares him even more.
"Do you want to get in bed?" Her voice sounds, the hush penetrating through the air.
Immediately Spencer rises; he wants nothing more than to take her up on her offer, but he is, unfortunately, chivalrous.
"No, no, it's okay," he whispers back, already delving back under his covers.
"Spencer. Just take the bed, I can't sleep with you tossing and turning," she says, hoping the complaint will cover up her caring behaviour.
"Be careful, Y/L/N, it almost sounds like you care."
"Shut up, do you want the bed or not?"
"I do but, unlike you, I'm actually a good person and wouldn't want to see you lying on the floor-"
"Uh, I'm offering you the bed, aren't I? That's gotta earn me some brownie points," she remarked, now having turned on a lamp. "Besides, if you're that bothered about it, we'll just share."
This makes Spencer stop: his torso is turned abnormally in his angle to see Y/N behind him, the blankets feebly draping across him show the Doctor Who shirt he's wearing, and his hair is a tousled mess that Y/N just knows will take him hours to fix in the morning. Well, that was tomorrow's problem, she contemplated, right now the issue lied in who, if either of them, was going to sleep on the floor.
"Uh, share? You.. uh, you really wanna do that?"
"As long as you don't snore, or kick; whats the harm?"
Spencer avoids dumping information about the harm of them sleeping together: how this kind of physical contact releases oxytocin, a chemical compound in the brain that exhibits feelings of empathy, trust, relaxation and even reduces anxiety. He saves her this because it's just past midnight and he doubts she wants to hear about the scientific risk of them growing to like each other.
"Oh, okay," he agrees instead. He clambers up from his pile of blankets and clutches a pillow to his chest while he stumbles over. Y/N shuffles to one side and pulls the duvet back, and he's more than happy to get under warm, comfy sheets.
"Let me just make something clear," Y/N says while Spencer adjusts into the pillows. He doesn't do this for long because one is snatched from under his head. When he moves to object, he sees it being planted next to his arm, creating a definite border between them.
"Your side, my side," Y/N says sternly, "that clear?"
"Crystal."

It's around three am when Y/N stirs awake. At first she can't grasp what's roused her, but then she hears a noise, and assumes there's got to be some construction going on outside because what she hears is alike to the humming of machinery. When she gains a reasonable amount of consciousness, she realises the sound is a bit too close to home.
Her hand reaches out across the bed, and when she accidentally whacks Spencer on the chest, she worries she's awoken him, until the noise starts again and it's here she discovers it's coming from him.
Oh shit, she thinks, please don't tell me my co-worker is having a sex dream while I'm lying right next to him.
He isn't, but Y/N isn't sure the reality is any better.
The moaning sound he first emitted has progressed into some sort of panicked grunt, accompanied by occasional whines. Soon, his body is flinching away from an invisible force.
Y/N knows it's probably best to leave it, that if she wakes him up he might be too confused and scared, he'll be disoriented, but when he starts screaming, she doesn't have anything else to resort to.
"Spence, Spencer! Wake up, hey," she shakes him, and he's awake in seconds. Sitting up straight, Y/N sees him hitting things that aren't there; it's only when she turns the light on that he eventually calms down.
"I'm sorry," he croaks immediately. Then his head is in his hands as he leans on his knees, and Y/N is overcome with a feeling completely foreign to her in regard to Spencer: empathy.
"Don't be, it-... it's okay," her voice takes a calm turn, and she even puts a hand on his back because anything that happens after three am is as good as forgotten anyway.
"You were right, I'm sorry," Spencer mutters. "This'll lose me ten points for sleeping conditions, huh?"
His attempt at cracking a joke does make Y/N smile, but even he can tell it's one of pity.
"Don't be silly. Do you want to, uh, talk about it?"
"I just wanna sleep," he sighs, and falls back into the pillows. Y/N creases her brows in sympathy, then lies down next to him; she stares at the ceiling for a while, and the steadying of Spencer's breathing makes her think he fell asleep a while ago, so she leans to turn off the lamp before his voice breaks the silence.
"Can you keep the light on?"
His sudden ask makes Y/N jump, but she steadies under the softness of Spencer's voice. When she turns to him his eyes are barely open, but he can see the benevolent smile she's giving him; something he rarely sees from Y/N.
"Of course," she says, then lies back down into the indent she's made in the bed.
"Thanks," he replies, and Y/N notices this is the least she's ever heard Spencer talk.
"You know," she starts, "it's not silly to be afraid of the dark; it's basic human instinct. I mean, it's evolution: humans have a... a tendency to be afraid of the dark, our visual sense vanishes and we can't detect anything around us. It's primal instinct, or... something, I guess."
At the end of her ramble, she's afraid she's sent Spencer to sleep, because he's gone uncharacteristically placid, but -yet again- he surprises her.
"Now who's losing points for conversation?"
Y/N's laugh after this is so hearty and genuine that Spencer can't help but smile, grin even. His chest rumbles with a chuckle, and Y/N feels the mattress shake under their collaboration of laughter, when it dies down they're both still beaming.
"Maybe I've been hanging around you too much," she declares. It's a jab, but her cheek rests against the pillow when she turns her head to him because her smile is so wide, and Spencer reciprocates; the act is unfamiliar to the pair, but warming nonetheless.
When it goes silent, Y/N doesn't expect to sleep at all. The Pavlov affect of the light being on tricks her brain into thinking she should be wide awake (something she learnt from Spencer), so she lies there patiently; hands intertwined resting on her chest. She twiddles her thumbs, almost as if she's waiting for something to happen.
"I'm sorry you have nightmares," she mutters.
Spencer's eyes flutter open, and she goes to make another apology, this time for waking him, but he clears his throat so she lets him take the lead.
"S'Not your fault, I just, I don't know. I get these dreams, these weird dreams - ever since I was a kid. I guess they just... developed into nightmares since I joined the BAU," he mumbles. "We see some pretty bad stuff."
Y/N hums, "we do, don't we?"
Her speech doesn't warrant a response, so Spencer just smiles again and they both silently call it a night. Reid is asleep in seconds, which Y/N finds admirable, while she stays still for a while. The way the orange light is bouncing off Spencer's physique makes him look like he's centre stage of an oil painting. The detail she's gaining of his pores and his eyelashes from being so close to him is both daunting and beautiful at the same time. His resting body reminds her of the pieces on display in an art exhibit Spencer dragged her along to one day last autumn. She wonders if he took anyone else to that exhibit, and hopes he didn't.
She soundlessly admires the rise of his chest: the melody of his breathing amid the chagrin of an occasional nose whistle. His hair, once a foreseeable inconvenience, is now an abundance of, what Y/N can only describe as, natural radiance; it's all curls and frizz and length that she's begged him to never lay a hand on. She can't help but run a hand through it. When she does, it's a lot softer than she expected and makes her think, wow I've really got to find out what conditioner he is using while she's untangling any knots she comes across. It only results in more frizz but he'll gel it back with product in the morning (much to Y/N's disappointment).
The noise he exudes when Y/N scratches his scalp makes her heart melt immediately. It is the sound of innocence wrapped up in a ball of revere, the way it comes from his chest and catches in the back of his throat in a small, naive whine. Then he subconsciously curls into her hold and is practically purring when she continues to scrape her fingernails gently across his head.
The ambivalence of it all is what makes Y/N stop. Spencer Reid isn't the kind of guy she ever anticipated to have a crush on. He didn't fit into the pattern of her list of exes, not even one feature of him came close to anything of her usual type. Where she'd normally be taken to movies and dinners, Spencer ventured with her to museums, public symposiums, art exhibits. Y/N can't resist fondly reminiscing on a library trip they took last week that resulted in them checking out each of their favourite books for one another. And while, on paper, this was romantic and harmonious, they were strictly platonic. Barely that; they took the piss out of each other at every opportunity, not even always as a joke. Y/N had collapsed in sorrow when she pulled his name out of the hat.
But the smile on Spencer's face... his serene expression and soft hair makes Y/N's knees weak for a totally different reason. And she figures this feeling trumps whatever feigned resentment she has been portraying over the years.
Fine, she thought, stubborn as always when it came to Spencer, I'll tell him when he wakes up. She began to bask in the peace that came before whatever storm could potentially riot tomorrow when she told Spencer how she felt. She guessed she had at least a few hours to relish in their friendship and the love they had built.
She guessed wrong.
Spencer's eyes were fluttering open before Y/N had even began conjuring up what she was going to say. Unfortunately, when she made a plan she stuck to it; she was beginning to see why her stubbornness could be such an unattractive quality.
Spencer squinted harshly with the light, and the first thing he managed to see clearly was the discreet panic in Y/N's eyes. He took a quick survey of the room to eliminate what visible factors that could reason her alarm; when he ruled out any unsub with a gun to her head, he relaxed.
Rubbing his eyes, he looked to the window, and it didn't seem to be daylight yet.
"Haven't you been to sleep?" He asked, more than prepared to educate her in the necessities of getting a good night's rest.
"Not yet. You've only been out a few minutes," she said softly, retracting her hand from his locks. Here, Spencer realised he didn't like the feeling of Y/N's absence.
"Oh," he hummed, "I was dreaming. I think Darth Vader was there..."
Y/N chuckled lightheartedly, "of course he was."
Spencer seemed willing to remain awake, but time was limited and Y/N wasn't sure when he'd be dozing off again. So, she made her move.
"Listen, I wasn't going to say anything until morning but, you're awake so I may as well tell you now..."
He's visibly intrigued; with a quirked eyebrow and digging the knuckle-joint of his finger in a rubbing motion in the corner of his eye to try and gain some sense of vivacity. Still, all he can respond with is a drone.
"And I don't want this to, I don't know, freak you out? Or to make anything awkward, so if it does, we can just... pretend this never happened, okay? I mean it."
This manages to obtain Y/N the attention she needs, because, without delay, Spencer has both eyes open and his eyebrows are knitted together in mostly concern. Now, with his eager expression, Y/N wishes he had stayed nonchalant.
"What's wrong?"
"I just... I guess. I mean, I like you? I think? I know, really. I just - you're not like any other guy, and I like that, that's a good thing! I mean, what other guy knows how to build a rocket and make a coin appear behind your ear?"
Spencer chuckles, and his eyes are wide and bright like he's been suddenly granted passage to a whole new world. Mouth agape with wonder, he's like a child being told he can finally play on the big-kid swings: buzzing with excitement and anticipation, just like said rockets he launches and gets in trouble with Hotch for.
"You mean like this?" He asks and leans forward to brandish a dime from behind Y/N's earlobe.
"Okay, like, who does that!" She screeches way too loudly for three am. When she clasps a hand over her mouth Spencer chortles and slowly removes her grasp. He's timid, so initially only presses a chaste kiss to her knuckles, then feels the ambience in the room shift; suddenly everything has devolved from blushing antics and stumbles of words to serenity in a matter of seconds.  
Spencer's pecks adhere to Y/N's hands, lingering on the skin of her knuckles and occasionally peppering to her palms. It isn't until a few kisses later that he brings himself to move closer, and even here his courage only brings him to her cheek.
When the corner of his lips press lustfully upon her face, Y/N doesn't hesitate in turning her head ever so slightly. His lips part, and he breaks away to glance at her and make sure this isn't all one big misunderstanding. But her gaze is matched to his mouth, and soon her lips. In a fumble to close the (already compact) space between them, the kiss they share is warm and breathy, it's passionate and lewd, especially with the arrangement in which Spencer places his hands: cupping one side of her face and the placing the other at her neck so he can rest his fingertips in the hold atop Y/N's spine.
Wherever his fingers touch leaves a trail of goosebumps which Y/N hopes never diminish; she wants every piece of evidence she can muster of Spencer's caresses, however this changes when Spencer's lips begin on the formidable task of her neck.
"Stop," she pants, and the hands that had inevitably reached his hair again are now pushing slightly on his shoulders. Her request makes Spencer drop his hands immediately.
"I'm sorry. Did I hurt you?"
"No, you didn't. It was nice. I just, I don't want everyone to see," she gestured to the red patch that had already formed above her clavicle where Spencer had only been nibbling a moment prior.
"Right, yeah," he breathed. A giddy smile forced its way onto his face when he looked at the way Y/N's lips had reddened and become swollen, especially her bottom (now essentially permanent) pout originated from the persistence of Spencer's tendency to drag his teeth along her lip and enclose it in a bite.
"You know, I predicted this would happen. Scientifically, people are a lot more likely to be attracted to one another after sleeping together. Subconsciously, we feel more capable in our ability to trust that person because we've been so vulnerable and open in a compromising position. The oxytocin we get from sharing physical contact like that is the same we produce in an orgasm."
"Oh," Y/N squeaked, while Spencer lay there with a proud smile on his face, not really registering the effect he'd had on her by using the word 'orgasm'.
"Oxytocin is heavily released during kissing too, so... I guess we're pretty bonded."
Y/N chuckled, smiling at his blushed cheeks. "I guess we are."
"It's, uh, it's actually also called the 'cuddle hormone' because it's primarily recognised as being released during hugging.”
"And that's your way of asking me if I want to cuddle?"
Spencer's smile was unmissable: shifting nervously between tight-lipped and beaming wide, his eyes were the only part of his countenance that stilled; locked on Y/N.
"Yes, I, uh, I believe it is."
She tried to suppress her grin, but it was no use.
"Big spoon or little spoon?" She asked.
"Oh, little spoon... obviously."

it's MCSM hyperfixation time yet again and I found something weird
so as an insufferable nerd, I went through the S2 texture files to replace romeo's god awful clothing(??) with a custom one I made, and to upload some to the well-neglected textures resource page. every file name is a string of seemingly random numbers rather than anything indicative of what it is before opening it, and the folders aren't very well organized, so I had to open each individual one to find the ones I was looking for.
now imagine how fucking baffled I was when I opened this image with no available context for its inclusion

edit: OH WAIT I FOUND IT, it's from the teleporting scene right at the end of episode 2. I'd put a screenshot but only 10 images per post and all that
sorry, have I opened the creepypasta folder? am I seeing an eyeball? :)?
my immediate thought was that it might be used for the glitch effect during the end, but after two more seconds of critical thought that seems like a strange use for it. especially since it was in a folder full of textures that clearly weren't meant to be used to begin with. if anyone has any reasonable clue what it might be PLEASE tell me, I'm highly curious and slightly disturbed if I'll be honest
anyway, a few files down are... what looks like jellyfish at some angles? the different colors are very interesting

again, I don't have a single clue what these could possibly be. if I squint it kinda looks like a sky with a moon, and on the ground are... objects...
moving on, like I mentioned earlier, I found a ton of placeholder textures for different areas. some of them were more obvious to me than others

first one looks to be somewhere near the order hall, right? second one I assume to be the uh, heckmouth area. third is... somewhere in beacontown, probably. fourth... uh. I found plenty more that are less recognizable as a location, but that would probably take up the space I'm about to write in.
if I remember correctly some of the ingame maps were built in actual minecraft and ported into MCSM (beacontown was, at least), so my guess is that these were used as a crusty model of what each area was going to look like. though I'm having a hard time figuring out what's happening

then finally we have the least bizarre image of the ones I have loaded in at the moment (the program I used will only extract textures as the game loads them in while the game's running, if my explanation makes sense). "geo" is presumably short for "geometry", and the only time you "shoot" (iirc) is during the bow minigame that kills you if you suck

His laid back almost chaotic nature combined with your calmness made for an unlikely pair, and everyone could see that. Everybody knew that you were an odd balance, and even more so they knew that something was going on under the surface.
Of course, it never occurred to them that you could be in a romantic relationship. Not like you always got along though, he put a spider in your mug one morning like a complete asshole.
Even with those little escapades, the way you two got along was unreal.

The two of you just kind of just evolved to couple level.
It started with random meetings after classes let out, then cafe dates outside of school, then casually kissing each other's cheek good morning, then putting hearts next to each other's contact names.
It wasn't "official" of course, neither of you ever really said anything about it.
It just became a thing, and eventually Gojo thought up pet names that weren't just "Brick wall-san" and "Mr. Filing Cabinet"
Making it official wasn't hard anyways.
All that has to happen was for someone to question your relationship.
Itadori just asked "Are you and (l/n)-sensei dating?"
Gojo thought for a moment and then said "Yeah I guess so"
When he asked you about it later you just gave him a look that said 'Seriously dude?'
He awkwardly chuckled and kissed your forehead before going off to work on something.

Drake & Cal

Drake smiled looking over himself in the mirror. Baby blue shirt and black pants, his glasses had a small tint of black around the edges, complimenting his silver eyes. His green hair pushed to the side. He rocked on his feet a moment before picking up his bag, quickly heading down stairs. "Now, Dray, sit down and eat. And do take out the jewelry before your father gets here." Drake rolls his eyes grabbing a piece of toast. "Can't mom, I'll be late, and today I start my job so.... bye!" And with that Drake raced out the door. He sat at the bench and waited for the bus that would take him to his destination. He sighs pulling out his phone to scroll through tumblr.
A few minutes later the bus arrives, and Drake eagerly rushes in, scanning the seats before picking one beside his best friend. Their name was Bea, they had been best friends since they were kids, And knew everything about each other, so of course, they were the best choice. Bea still had their black hair, and dashing personality. "You ready?" Drake asked, Bea just now noticing his presence. "Whoa- Jesus- Don't do that!" Drake chuckles sliding his bag underneath his seat. "'Glowsticks- need I say more'?" Drake gestures to Bea's shirt. Bea looks up from their phone again. "Need I say more?" They slid their phone into their pocket. "So, what job do you think we'll get?" Drake smiles slightly bringing his right leg up to his chest. "I don't know, probably some fast food joint, it's what most teenagers get." They nod their head turning so that their back is against the window. "Yeah, probably.... but what if we get an exciting job? It's not unheard of!!" Drake rolls his eyes. "Your idea of exciting is the possibility of dying, but not dying. And while that's all good and all, I'd never hear the end of getting stuck with that kinda job." Bea punches his arm lightly. "It's not getting 'stuck' it's getting picked! You know the job picks you!!" Drake sighs. "You always did believe in that didn't you?" Bea leans forward, pointing in his general direction. "So did you," they leaned back laying their legs over Drake's. "And still do if I recall correctly." Drake drops his arms over Bea's legs, scoffing. "Yeah, don't remind me." A loud ding was heard throughout the bus, followed by the driver. "Its your driver, here, I advise you to get ready to exit the bus, uh, we are nearing our destination." Drake swatted at Bea's legs reaching down for his bag after they moved to get their own bag. "Well, I'm excited." Drake stands up setting his leg on the seat. "Yeah, well, I'm not." Bea rolls their eyes. "Alright grumpy pants, calm down." Drake scoffs as the bus comes to a halt. The doors slowly opened. "Alrighty, ladies, gents, and all you lovely people, we have reached our destination, please exit the bus, and watch your step!" Drake pushes off the chair and exits the bus, slowing his pace so Bea can catch up. In front of him was 'The Workplace Chooser', they couldn't choose a better name? It was huge. The glass windows reached the ceiling in the center of the building, the sides went on for a while, before they stopped and buses filled the next spots, getting ready to take the people to their new job. Bea nudged his shoulder, pulling their hair into a loose ponytail. "C'mon, slow poke." Drake picked up his pace, watching the fountains as they displayed the show of water. Bea ran up and held open the door, bowing when Drake got close enough. Drake walked into the building, taking in his surroundings. When you walk in there is a grand staircase, at either sides of the stairs there are purple plants. Many people were rushing by looking for their bus. Bea rolled their eyes dragging Drake up the stairs.
Drake groaned, not that anyone could hear his frustration, as the room was full to the brim with other teenagers. But he still let Bea drag him around. The room was divided into three sections, no apparent categories, and they all faced a big stage. Bea dragged him to the back row in the middle section. They both sat down watching the other teens closely. Soon enough the lights dimmed and the noise settled. A man in a suit walked up to the podium in the center of the stage. "Hello, future workers of good!!!! I know you are so excited for your jobs, correct?" Assorted cheers erupted through the crowds, and Drake slid further back into his chair. The man smiled, looking down seemingly at a peice of paper. "Alright, so this year we are going in groups of four, and we will start with the important jobs first." Drakes phone buzzed, sighing he sat up pulling out his phone. There was a new text. 'Has your brother been called yet?' Drake typed a quick 'no' before going back to listening to the speaker. "-t, and next is the helpers!!! We have just four of those in this year. Are you ready to see who these brave men, women, and people are?" More cheers erupted through the room, Bea being the loudest. Drake flinched, elbowing Bea lightly. "Alrighty! First up is, Seth Banks, Catlin Bea, Tiffany Grace," Bea nudged Drake grinning wickedly. "And Drake Brins! A round of applause for these great teens who have been chosen! Please find the bus outside your exit!"
Drake was shocked. So shocked he didn't notice being pulled out of the room. He snapped out of it shortly after being slapped a few times. A blonde girl was standing before him smiling sweetly, wearing a grey sweater, with shorts. "Hey there! You alright?" Drake looked around spotting Bea walking towards the group with their bags. Drake nodded and started to get up. The girl helped him to his feet. "I'm Tiffany, she/her pronouns!" Drake smiled. "Uh, Drake, he/him pronouns." Bea handed Drake his stuff before turning to the other person in the group, wearing a long sleeve shirt with jeans. Their hair was blood red. Bea looked at me before stepping closer to the individual. "That's Seth, he/him pronouns." Bea nodded, and Seth turned to us. "I'm fine, let's just go." It looked like Seth wiped his face before picking up his bags. "Okay, let's go!" Tiffany picked up her bag and walked with us. "So.... we are gonna be roommates?" Bea nodded excitedly. "Yeah! I know all about this job! Except you know the confidential things." Tiffany nodded, holding open the glass doors for us. I nodded, "Yeah, they were really hoping for this job." Bea nodded. "Ever since I knew it existed!!" We entered the bus and chose seats in the back. I pushed my bag under the seat as Seth sat down next to me, Bea and Tiffany a few rows up, on the other side of the bus. "Hey, Seth, how are you?" Seth chuckled a bit. "Like I said I'm fine, were you even listening?" I shrugged. "Yeah, but just making sure." Seth turned to me, scanning over my face before he gets closer to me. "You okay?" He asks laying his head on my shoulder. "Yeah, I guess." He scoffed dropping his bag on the floor. "Yeah, and I'm the queen of England!" "I just wasn't expecting this job, now, I've told you my problem, how about you?" He tensed as the bus started pulling out, and heading to their new work place. "Only if you want to of course," he nodded. "Yeah, thanks." He pulls out a pair of headphones and starts some music. "You wanna hear?" "Hm? Oh- yeah, sure." He hands out a ear bud, which I take and put in my ear, looking out the window as music played. "You have great taste in music." Seth nods crossing his arms. I lean on the window, watching the scenery. This is gonna be a long ride isn't it?
"Alrighty!! We have arrived at our destination!!! Congratulations, helpers!" Rolling my eyes I hand Seth back his earbud reaching for my bag. We all filed out of the bus as other buses did the same, the grand building standing in front of us, mainly secluded by miles and miles of  trees, and what seemed to be a beautiful mansion, a bit older for most peoples taste, but I loved it. The fountain in front of it was overgrown, and the fences looked like they had been placed way after the house was built. We walked up to the doors and waited. A different group stood beside me, there was a boy, angry looking, like he didnt wanna be here. I snapped my head back to the doors so he wouldnt know I was staring. All of the sudden he punched my shoulder lightly. "I'm Markus, what about you?" Clearing my throat I nervously turn towards Markus. "Uh Drake, I really hope no problems arise, it is our first day." The boy rolled his eyes, dropping his arm around my shoulders. "yeah, yeah, hey listen, we should stick together, I got your back you got mine. You look like the type to deal some damage when needed." I pushed him off me. "No, I dont know if I can trust you. And even so, you dont look like the type to keep to yourself for even a second." He scoffed. "Yeah, okay buddy. I bet." I rolled my eyes. "Whatever, I am the fifth precinct's leaders son. I'm no smart guy, but those clothes look like their fifth precinct. So watch yourself buddy." I scoff turning back to the doors as someone in a powdered suit walks out with a clipboard. "Hello helpers! Your ranks are posted in your quarters; Be wise my dear helpers, you have been chosen. Do not let us, or your precinct down. This is a great day for all of you." The lady looked at the clipboard for a moment before looking up. "Welcome to MCOU."

The Quodo Fic I'll Never Write

[[Alright, I'll post what I have then! It's pretty bare bones but I couldn't get the idea of Quark leading Odo on a galaxy wide goose chase out of my head. Thank you to @boomdeyadah for cleaning this up enough to share 😚]]

Odo has been gone 5 years, and while he enjoys his time in the Link he never can quite stop thinking about his friends. In fact, the longer he's gone the more he worries what kind of mischief Quark in particular is getting up to.
His thoughts are too individual, can't truly harmonize with the Link. In an effort to stop the dissonance, the mass conscious redoubles it efforts to truly absorb Odo. He's almost wooed by the ease of it all until he realizes he's lost an entire 8 months to the Link’s latest effort. Time. It's the concept of time that truly and finally drags him out of the swirling, golden ocean of his people. He has all the time in the universe. Quark does not. Quark will grow old and die and he could miss it all if he lost himself to the Link.
"I'll just go visit. That's all. I'll keep an eye on Quark until he passes because somebody has to make sure he's not up to no good."
Just keeping everyone else's pockets safe and then he'll go home. The link would still be there after all.
So he goes, not wanting to acknowledge the relief he feels while docking at the station or the gentle warmth that settles over him at seeing Kira and his old friends. Until he gets the news and it’s like someone filled his old bucket with cold water and dumped it on his head. Quark is gone. Missing. Has been for over a year. And of course Quark would be so pleased to know that people looked for him. Extensively. Even a year later Rom and Kira are still regularly discussing any new clues to his whereabouts.
"I never thought I'd miss that little gremlin, Odo, but this station isn't half as fun without him. Don't tell him I said that when we finally find him, though."
Kira is sympathetic and Odo might be sick to his stomach if he had one. He tries not to think of Quark lying dead on some backwater planet in the wilderness, or curled up in some rotten back alley after a deal gone wrong. He'd probably just scammed someone big time and scuttled off to a random moon to enjoy his stolen riches.
It takes Odo a day to decide he's going to personally find Quark after some catching up with his friends and colleagues. It's all of three days before his nerves have him saying goodbye and shipping out at warp like a man on a mission.
"The quicker I get this over with, the better," he tells himself.
He's already read over the case file a dozen times, poured over every detail. He estimates it'll take him a week to find Quark. A week comes and goes. Then two. A month. Three months. It's six months before he gets a real break and boy is it a revelation. He's going through a small, barely lived in room on a no-name freighter light-years away from the station when it hits him. Quark had been here. Maybe for weeks. He'd been here and clearly caught wind of Odo barreling at him through space because he'd left in a hurry. The sheets were still wrinkled and a hastily scribbled note was left for him on a dingy table.
[[Go away, I didn't break any laws. Leave me alone. Don't you have anything better to do than harass me?]]
No, he doesn't. Quark really was on the run. From him. He doesn't want to see Odo at all. Odo  contemplates letting him go, albeit briefly. Quark probably has a reason for avoiding him. Something criminal no doubt. So he's going to try even harder to find him. He has to see him again at least once. Then he'll really go home, for sure. He was going to arrest Quark for whatever crime he had clearly committed and then leave.
Except, it takes two years to catch Quark. That's a long time to think about why you're still after a man that you've pretended to hate. Ample time to consider that all the evidence says Quark really HASN'T committed a crime and yet you’re still using it as an excuse. Too much time to ponder the unwanted ache his absence has left since the moment YOU left HIM on DS9 without so much as a goodbye. Two years is a long time for him realize he's let self-sabotage and uncertainty get in the way of what relatively little time he can get with Quark compared to his own long, indeterminate lifespan.
What has he done? What has he done? Visions of Quark walking away for good this time fill him with dread.
"Can I fix this?"
He's determined to try. Over the long months it becomes clear Quark is intentionally leaving him clues here or there so his trail never grows cold. Sometimes letting Odo get so close he swears he sees the flash of coattails out of the corner of his eye. He's not sure exactly why Quark is leading him on but it's all the hint he needs to keep searching.
Finally, FINALLY, the game of cat and mouse is over and he's got his eyes on Quark for the first time in almost a decade. They're on a remote planet in the middle of nowhere and there's a tension between them as heavy as the years Odo has wasted. He doesn't even get a word in before Quark is pushing him, face already warm with angry tears. He fires off questions and insults quick as a knife and Odo listens patiently.
"Who do you think you are?"
"It's been years, I said leave me be."
"Why can't you leave well enough alone?"
"I never wanted to see you again anyways."
Odo doesn't know what to say but he talks anyways.
"Why did you leave? I would have left you alone if you'd asked on the station."
It's not accusatory but Quark reacts like it is.
"You're one to talk about leaving! You walked away without looking back!"
It's true. Odo knows it's true and some piss poor apology isn't enough to fix it but he still gives one, still says everything he's been too afraid to say. Quark is all hissing and righteous anger until Odo cradles his face and quietly asks if they can try again. Because saying I love you was still too hard, too vulnerable but it was the TRUTH. Had been before he'd left, too, and leaving for the Link had been like a breakup even if neither had said so.
"I won't leave again. I promise. Who else is going to keep you on your toes? I'll even sign a contract if you want."
And THAT sounds suspiciously like marriage but Quark latches onto it anyways.
"Damn right you'll stay. I don't have the funds to keep running from you anyways."
It's not perfect, of course, but it's a start. That first kiss, desperate and clumsy as it is, really helps seal the deal. Since neither really HAS to be back on DS9 anytime soon, they're on the planet enjoying each other in peace another few months before Quark is itching to check on his bar.

ok!! now onto the process/tutorial!! i’ll post it under read more because this will definitely get long
this will be really long, i’m going to go into extreme detail of how i did this orz; and there is a possibility of there being shortcuts for how i do things, i just haven’t figured them out yet
so let’s jump right into this!

this one was a little tricky! i really liked how the clouds moved on red velvet’s page, but i couldn’t save it moving; so i saved the cloud image and had to make it move myself
i use photoshop cs5 to edit/gif!
so opening up the bg image into ps, i cropped and changed the image size down to the size i wanted (540x540) 
then i would add 5 pixels to the top and then reduce it back to 540. i did this five times. 
next i reopened the frames in photoshop and started adding them into one file with the animation window open, i found a nice speed for the clouds to move, (i tried matching it to the speed they moved on the website) converted the timeline to animation, and then converted the layers to smart object
i copy and pasted the red velvet logo from one of the teasers, and the ‘start’ i made frames (one with the word, and a blank frame) for as well and i pasted that on top of the cloud frames (to get the shadow effect: blending options => drop shadow) my settings:

for the second image, i added a letter to every frame to get it to look like it’s being typed out. 
the pop up box actually isn’t mine, i had downloaded this pack of overlays a long time ago and finally was able to use them orz; i took the box overlay, and edited it to fit with my edit
the yes/no selection is simple, i made a frame with each yes and no selected and a yes chosen as the answer layer, the selection arrow i took from the original box overlay, just changed the color and resized!

i started off with the selection icons and then worked my way down! 
i opened the images, cropped, added the colored bg, applied my sharpening and psds and saved them individually.
after saving the files, i reopened them and applied a fill layer of the same color background, changing it to hue. each little fruit icons were cropped from the same images i got the characters, i used the elliptical marquee (while holding shift) to get the perfect circle
the select a character, i did the same way i did the start from the first image
now with the characters, i used the same color from the icon bgs, used it for the bg and the character shadow (which i now realize i forgot to apply wendy’s 🤦‍♀️) the box is the same one from the overlay box from before!
how i outlined the character icons, drinks and character names: blending options => stroke, settings are

simply copy and pasted the fruit, and the back arrow and the ready images! (all of them came from the teasers)
i used the elliptical marquee tool again to get those perfect circle icons and put text over them.
now each character has an icon folder and character selected folder, so for example, with irene’s folders visible, i save three individual frames with the arrow in three different positions, so it’s moving when i go to gif it. each character got three frames 
with all 15 frames done, i reopen them and start placing the frames into the first frame’s animation window
the sparkles i had decided to add last minute, just so it wouldn’t be boring. i don’t have the source saved for the sparkle gif (it’s from tumblr is all i know orz)
to get the sparkles on my animation, i selected the frames of the sparkle gif and pasted over the selection of my gif
save for web and devices, and i’m all done!

the loading page! pretty easy now that i’ve done the others. 
the loading text was done the same way the text on the second image was done (add a letter each time), the cloud background moving, done the same way it was with the start screen!
all the items were copy and pasted, resized, and part of them erased to fit in the clouds. 
frames were opened and pasted into the first frame’s animation window, set a speed, save for web and devices, and all done!!

this is the second time i’ve done a character select edit like this, but this time i went a little farther! this took me around 12 hours to do and i’m very happy with the end result and i’m happy everybody else likes too!!

Smitty's Thailand Adventure - Day 2
Big day. My phone is saying 27000 steps. The highlights include getting a suit tailored, having a thai woman rub my naked body down for an hour, meeting Keith Urban's green beret brother, and a friendly, spirited discussion about Islam. No spoilerinos though!
I didn't sleep well, the bed was way too hard and the springs jabbed me all night. I'd told Josh 10am but I was up at 6. I read some more of "Growth Mindset" - talking about sports stars and CEOs that had fixed mindsets vs those with growth mindsets.
Josh texted me and said that he was going to meet me at 11 because he didn't sleep well, so I went out exploring. I got turned around a few times trying to find the train station on the main road. Think a giant freeway overpass with four train lines on it, and a huge station connecting them all. This one has two mega shopping centers like the Emporium attached. It didn't open until 10, so I went for a walk in the park instead.
There were heaps of people just doing normal park stuff - walking, exercising. I saw a couple kids practicing punches. There was an old woman cutting a hedge, and most of the park was well maintained - except for a set of steps I found. They were leading to a jetty that jutted out over the lake in the middle of the park, and the steps leading down were covered in bird poo. It was weird seeing the juxtaposition. There's another one in this picture I took yesterday:

I really liked the architecture of this building, and it was odd to see the rats nest of phone cabling framed in front of it. That wasn't even the worst one. It highlighted something we saw quite a bit of - lowest possible effort to look good.
I walked around the park for a while, then grabbed some food from the White Family Mart on the corner of my street. The name jumped out at me. I grabbed some godawful dried strawberries and a rice and grilled chicken packet that was way better than I expected.
Josh texted me, so I left the hotel and went back to the Emporium and walked around a bit. There was this cool shop called Another Man Story with unique custom men's accessories. Some of the stuff was cool, but it struck me as a desperate attempt at buying individuality through conformity. "Look at these unique expressions of you that anyone with enough money can buy!"
Says the guy with too many stupid expensive leather jackets.
I was looking at my leather bracelet that I made myself for like $5, and compared it to these bracelets that cost hundreds. I like mine better because I made it and it has meaning to me.
I met up with Josh eventually and we got some pad thai in the food court. I'd never had it before, and it was pretty good. I've always been a picky eater, so eating new shit is a bit outside my comfort zone and I'm proud of the small steps I'm taking.
After brunch(?) we went to a tailor Josh knew, in the first of many trips across the city. We took the skytrain - it cost about a dollar per trip. We needed to change train then walk a bit. I was boggled at how well Josh knows the city, and again reminded how screwed I'd be if I wanted to do any of this shit without him.
The tailor was cool - spoke English, very business-oriented. I ordered a 3-piece suit in grey wool, and two white shirts. It'll be ready the day before I leave.
We left the tailor after Josh finished texting one of his friends - something about organizing a business together. Josh had many words to say about this guy, and the tailor, and anyone who walked slowly...
After the tailor Josh wanted to check out a market to get ties and cuff links. I told him I'd look at one market - we went to Cambodia together a few years back, and I got burned out walking from market to market trying to save 3 dollars on some bag. He led us on a crazy whirlwind tour of the backroads and skywalks across Bangkok, until eventually we ended up at the same market we'd gone to last time we were here!
It was a sprawling shopping centre, with as many stalls crammed in as the fire code would allow. Josh described it as "an inside market with air conditioning." We wandered around looking at shirts for a while until we found the ties and cuffs place. I hemmed and hawwed for a while until I picked out a tie and some cuffs. The tie looks awesome - it's skinny and red.
We left the market and took the winding route back to a different mall - we had some meat and rice dish. Josh told me that beef in Thai was "moo". I called bullshit. The menu had "grilled beef/pork/chicken" on it. When we ordered, Josh pointed at that item and said "moo". The waiter nodded. I grabbed Google Translate and typed in moo - it came up as "swine". Sure enough, the waiter brought out pork.
As we ate, Josh told me the plan for tonight - I needed a haircut, so we planned to walk into a place near his AirBNB. We planned on meeting up with his friends for drinks and a meal, right around the corner from his place. And, I'd expressed that I wanted a massage. So the plan was dump my bag at the hotel, find a massage, get a haircut, then meet his friends for dinner.
Another quick train ride. The thing they don't tell you about the skyrail is that you gotta climb stairs to get on and off each time.
I dumped my bag. Josh warned me about the massage girls outside my hotel, and again, they disappointed by not heckling me.
We tried a couple of massage places near my hotel - the two non-dodgy ones near my hotel, anyway, ones that didn't advertise "Vip Room", "4 Hands Massage", or God forbid "Teen Love". If you need to emphasize that your "masseuses" are teenagers, you're not an establishment I'm keen to visit.

We got led into a cubicle each. Shower curtain walls, a very small cot. I sat down and my masseuse walked in. She was a middle-aged Thai woman. She dropped down under the cot and pulled out a basket, then said "leave your underpants on" and left. I took off everything except my underpants and sat cross legged on the cot. I was nervous. What if she touched something I didn't want touched? What if I reacted in a way I wasn't comfortable reacting? I did some deep breathing while I waited.
My masseuse came back. She said "lay down, back first." I lay down on my back. She said "no, back first!" I rolled back over onto my tummy. She covered my back with a towel, then unrolled the towel down to my underpants. She oiled her hands and started rubbing my back. It was nice - Thai massage is firm, more of a deep tissue massage than relaxation. She worked her way across my back, my legs, then my chest. There was a weird one where she raised one of my legs into a bent position, foot flat, and pressed it down into the other leg. It felt like my balls were getting squished in a sandwich press. Clearly, these techniques were designed for Asian men.
She finished with a neck and head massage. She couldn't speak English, but she communicated humour in other ways - she started rubbing my neck and flicked the weird lump on the side that I have. I said his shake was firm. He said the green beret thing again and twisted my thumbs around. Then he wished us a good night and walked off.
We shrugged and walked on down the road towards the barber. We bumped into Greg Urban again - he commented, and asked where we were going. I said we were getting a haircut. He said "you need one!" I said "thank you!" He said "you need one because you look like shit." We kinda just walked off a bit faster. Both me and Josh were getting major sketchy vibes. Josh compared it to a foreign 5 year old who can speak fluent English walking up to you and talking to you - a distraction for something more sinister.
We kept walking. The barber was in Josh's area. He decided that he was going to show me all the street animals he was friends with. We had to cross another skybridge to get there. As we walked across this one, there was a dude laying down covering half the bridge. Josh said we should go single file. As we walked, the dude sat bolt upright. It felt like something out of a zombie movie and I almost sprinted off. Josh later explained that he was likely an opium addict, and likely at rock bottom because of it.
We walked to the barber. They were super full, so we booked in for tomorrow at 3. My fade needs a touch up. We left, and Josh started pointing out his dog and cat friends. He called them all cutesy names in Spanish, like gordo (fatso) or nino (little boy) or chico (little guy). It was weird to see this super intense friend of mine, fiercely competent and ruthless in business and his personal lives, acting like a kid in a candy store with these street animals. It was a weird juxtaposition, but it definitely humanised him a bit more. The animals were really cute too.

We sat down in W District, an outdoor dining and bar area. Josh ordered us some ribs and chips and we waited for his friend and business partner to arrive.
