Ok, but hear me out - Marco gets shallowed whole by the titan, then Reiner kills it and they all think he died and stuff. But, you know, he didn't. Because they killed the titan too soon. So, Marco gets to I Don't Know Man crawl out of the titan. The only problem? He doesn't have any odm, nor can he risk trying to get anyone's attention in case the 3 notices him and finish the job for good.

Now, this is my sleep deprived mind talking but- Marco gets outside the wall and finds a tiny titan that's docile for some reasons. Like, I don't know, that titan sees Marco and is like "I'm gonna protect this guy with my life". Marco doesn't complain. Problem is that he can't get inside the wall, he needs to get in contact with someone from the SC (as they often go outside the wall) or preferably find Jean (which is unlikely as he's going to join the MP). Cue to the expedition outside and Marco coming riding on the tiny titan and finds Jean, Armin and Reiner and the first thing he does is yell "Jean!" all happy and relieved and finally feeling safe after so much time alone.

... Then he notices Reiner and all the color goes away from his face. He thinks "We are fucked" - so does Reiner.

AU : When your soulmate dies, their last words get written on your skin.

After the Trost battle Jean finds the words “We haven't even had a chance to talk this through” all over his chest ; he isn’t sure what to do with that information.

The probability of meeting your soulmate has always been low, if not nearly impossible ; that’s why many have stopped believing in them, why it became more of a myth than anything else. Jean only knew of their existence because of his mother, and only because he asked about the words on her arm when he was little. The explanation was vague at the time, just a short ‘Your father’s last words’ before she told him to drop the subject, but enough to make little Jean even more curious ; he couldn’t remember his father too well, his absence always in the back of his head. He died when Jean was young, too young to understand what was happening or to remember much. That’s why young Jean has always glued himself to anything related to his father, wanting to learn more about the man. With the passing of time he has stopped seeking any closure for a man barely present in his life, but by then he has already learned all that was to learn about soulmates.

A soulmate was, put it simply, your other half. A part of your soul. When that half of the soul dies, their last words show on the skin of the half still alive. Is to keep the souls still connected, despite being unable to be whole together. To never forget them. Jean always thought it was bullshit ; there was no way of knowing who’s your soulmate, how can some words make up for that? So, despite knowing that soulmates are real because of his mother, he didn’t give the subject much thought. How could one love someone they never meet? Mourn for a soul that has never been in their life to begin with?

Then one day, most exactly during the day the wall around Trost got destroyed by the Collosal Titan, the words got formed on his skin

“We haven't even had a chance to talk this through”

And it changed everything.

Jean couldn't breathe. The words were ringing in his ears, repeating themselves over and over again in Marco's own voice. He could literally see him in front of his eyes, trying to reason why the traitors.

He doesn't know when he moved forward or for how much he's been punching Reiner before he got stopped by the others. At that moment he wanted nothing more than to kill the bastard. To make him regret being born. To scream and cry and-

Marco. In a million years Jean wouldn't have thought it was him, yet it made so much sense. They were best friends, always there for each other. No one understood him like Marco. No one. It was like it was meant for them to meet.

It made so much sense, which is why it hurt the most. He should've known. Should've seen it sooner.

He left, wanting to be alone. Suddenly it made so much sense why his mother never wanted to talk about the words. They've been haunting her, the way Marco's words were going to haunt him for the rest of his life.

He laughed and tugged on the end of my scarf. “One thought at a time, remember?”

His smile was contagious. “Yeah, yeah,” I said and thought for a second. “It’s just, when I asked if we could talk, you looked—I don’t know. Like you didn’t want to, I guess.”

He looked away, a tell-tale sign that I was right, but his smile didn’t fade, only turned sheepish. “Well, I won’t lie to you. I’m a little scared, so maybe that’s what you saw. I’m sorry if I made it seem like I didn’t want to talk to you. I do,” he insisted, “but there are a lot of feelings, you know?”

“Yeah,” I sighed. “I know. For me, too.” I ran a hand through my hair, then cringed as I’d forgotten about the clip I’d shoved in it. Snowflakes clung to the glass window, melting from the heat inside the library.

“When did you speak to Jean?”

“He didn’t tell you?” I asked, even though the answer was clearly written on his face.
