Most SARS-CoV-2 patients experience anosmia, or a loss of smell, which can linger for months after recovery. According to olfactory epithelium samples taken from 24 biopsies, T cell-mediated inflammation continues in the olfactory epithelium even after SARS-CoV-2 has been removed from the tissue, indicating a mechanism for long-term post-COVID-19 smell loss.
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is thought to harm the olfactory epithelium, a specialized tissue involved in smell sense that runs along the top of the nasal cavity (SARS-CoV-2). The olfactory epithelium comprises three key components: odor-detecting olfactory receptor cells, a sustentacular cell layer for support, and basal stem cells that replenish the cells continually.

Man, losing your sense of smell/taste long term really sucks not only because you're deprived of two senses that can bring pleasure but also
You can't use your nose to gauge any sort of food safety. Can't smell if milk has gone bad. I had chicken in my fridge since Saturday. I don't know if it's safe to cook. I can't smell it. (and I'm very inexperienced at cooking) Every time you Google to see how to tell if food is bad the thing is : smell it, duh. Well. I'm smell disabled, thank you very much. 😭
Man, when people complain about bad odors at work I'm just thinking... I wish I could smell the stench too!

It May Be Wise to Screen for Smell Loss to Predict Frailty and Unhealthy Aging - Johns Hopkins
It May Be Wise to Screen for Smell Loss to Predict Frailty and Unhealthy Aging – Johns Hopkins
In a study using data from nearly 1,200 older adults, Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers have added to a growing body of evidence that loss of the sense of smell is a predictive marker for an increased risk of frailty as people age. Building on previous research showing that olfactory dysfunction is a common early sign of brain-linked cognitive decline, the new findings suggest the link to…

I have had more free time than I’m used to lately, so I drew this slightly silly stream of consciousness comic about how changes in taste and smell as after effects of getting COVID in 2021 have impacted me. Mostly it’s a love letter to food. It was also an attempt from me to try to make a comic without planning it for 5 years and see where the mood takes me, so naturally there are a lot of detailed food illustrations (they’re the best).

occasionally I ponder on the giant hole in the side of q!Bad’s head that’s just gone untreated this whole time, and the fact nobody knows about it, likely not even himself 😔

hear me out: mizu and akemi, jwqs au. like if I had a nickel for every pair of gals where one was a revenge consumed self proclaimed demon forced to cross dress as a man to survive and to pursue her quest and who has gone through a terrible fire related disaster and is now set on killing a specific bunch of guys and the other was a sheltered princess whose desires and goals are in direct conflict with her condition as a woman and so she has to learn to cater to the men around her, supported only by some old dude in other to achieve what she sets out to do I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.

I .. i have come to great shame: I am repulsed. By… garlic😔
Now before you chase me with pitchforks: I suffered from long covid and the only scent I was able to perceive for eight months was garlic. Everything smelled like garlic. The garlic haunted my dreams.
Now that I can smell the flowers once again, I have grown unloving of the garlic.
Can the council forgive me?

Covid loss of taste and smell
Lucky me, I got my first Covid infection just before Christmas. I'm now at day 4 of no smell or taste.
This is my first time dealing with all this and I'm wondering how long it takes to get taste and smell back.
If you lost taste and smell with Covid can you please let me know how long it took for you to get back to normal? Thanks.
