I'm a renter so investing in garden infrastructure is a balance and a compromise.
Mine is a garden of poverty. Found objects, repurposed items, cheap tip finds, composting, creativity and elbow grease is what my various vegie gardens run on.
Everything you see here I got for free. Wood lengths and a wire trellis from a curbside rubbish pile and bricks that were onsite when I moved in. This is all packed together between the legs of a garden arch which I bought cheap several years ago.
Today I refreshed the soil with 50% home sourced ingredients. Pea seeds saved from last season will go in soon. This DIY box will be feeding me again shortly.
This is how I spent my Earth Day. I hope your Earth Day was equally rewarding.

This is an IGA supermarket in Montreal. A niche concept but I love the idea. A great discovery today for Earth Day.

What's this? The remarkable garden at Canada's first grocery store that sells organic produce grown on its roof. Don't you wish lots more grocery stores would do this, and not just in Canada?

Earth Day
Today is Earth Day!
I'm spending my day out in the garden doing the best I can to be a good steward for my little patch of the planet.
How will you be caring for your little puzzle piece of Earth today?

A cast of left overs, AKA Vegie Fried Rice.
I've been time poor recently due to a busy work schedule. I'd fallen behind keeping up with my fridge and pantry stocks. A free week has allowed me to get on top of things again.
I already had every ingredient in this pan on hand. A lot of odds and ends including:
old, soft juicing carrots
old, softening onion and garlic
near 'best before' eggs
a left over cup of frozen peas
assorted Asian condiments
Lots of frozen meals ahead from this effort!
Basic kitchen skills can mean eating well, saving money and minimizing food waste.

I planted far too many seed potatoes last season and have been struggling with a produce glut ever since. My freezer is well stocked with frozen mashed potato portions!
These little odd bods are the last of the great glut event. They are soft and were sprouting. They were a bugger to peel. But I hate food waste. So tonight they found their way into a potato and leek soup. Simple to make and delicious to eat.
For the first time in months I am now a household without potatoes.
Hooray!!!!!

This lettuce plant is really embracing the concept of 'cut and come again' harvesting!

A Booping Victory!
I didn't tumblr boop anyone on April 1st. But I did score a huge Booping victory on that day.
My mother's 13 year old cat was a rescued feral as a kitten and has been a one person cat since. She adores my mum. It's taken me years of patience, effort, kindness, treat giving and getting bitten and scratched along the way trying to build bridges with this puddy but on April 1st I finally claimed a victory.
The cat, Megs, touched her nose on mine. I got booped. By the cat. This difficult, stand offish cat finally showed me some trust and acceptance and I came home with my skin intact.
Hooray for booping day!

Lettuce is such an ironic vegetable. It grows best in the cooler months. The months when no-one really wants to be eating lettuce.

Bird Fancier's Lung - Avian Livestock Owners Please Read This....
A family friend of ours has just been diagnosed with Bird Fancier's Lung (Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis). It has been caused by his long term close contact with his budgerigars and chickens.
Years of inhaling components from their droppings and feathers has left him with 60% of his lung capacity. He needs to sell all of his bird livestock ASAP and avoid future contact with birds in order to save his life. As an experienced and life long bird breeder this is a very difficult situation.
I never knew about this disease until now. I'm posting this so that others out there who live similar close lives with avian livestock can educate themselves about this disease and manage their own risk factors.

Some of my Yellow Cherokee Wax BUSH beans have decided to become POLE beans instead and start climbing up structures.
I didn't know that bush beans were capable of this kind of rebellion.
