Sea Of Hope Chapter 8
Previous Next SOH Master Grandmaster
This masterful piece of art was done by @aoi-kanna as a commission. They are truly talented and I appreciate all the hard work they put into making this for me. Go check them out, they are absolutely wonderful!!!
Story below or AO3 above.
~~~
While Axe checked you over, Edge grabbed Red by the back of the neck and stormed down the main hatch, loudly yelling at the rest of the crew to mind their own business as they scurried out of his way. For the most part, Red's protests went unheard as he was dragged down the steep steps. Blue, on the other hand, had hesitantly approached Papyrus, whispering something before they too turned and headed past the hatch, disappearing through a pair of doors into the upper levels of the ship.
The clearing of a throat had you tensing and pressing closer to Axe. Black had once again gotten closer than you were comfortable with, standing only a couple paces away. “AS HEARTWARMING AS THIS IS, IT IS QUICKLY BECOMING LATE AND THE LADY STILL NEEDS ADEQUATE DRESS. MY BROTHER’S COAT IS HARDLY A FITTING SUBSTITUTE.”
Rus chuckled beside him. However, when he made to comment, a look from Black had him looking down instead.
Axe narrowed his sockets. “Don’t know where you’re planning on get’n somethin. Ain’t exactly swimmin in extras and you’ve refused to mend mine so I could give it to her.”
Black scoffed. “YOU FAILED TO MENTION IT WAS FOR YOUR MARKED. YOU HAVE ALSO YET TO COMPLETE THE TASK I ASKED OF YOU. I DID NOT SEE THE POINT IN TURNING IN YOUR FAVOR WHEN MY OWN HAD BEEN UNMET.”
“Been busy.”
“AS WE’VE ALL.”
Something shifted in the air, both of their eyelights brightening. Rus glared, moving closer to his brother. It took Crooks placing a hand on Axe’s shoulder for the two to back down.
“Petty bastard.”
“WHEN IT SUITS ME.” With a flourish of a hand and a half step back, he indicated the direction of the doors, continuing to meet Axe’s gaze. “NOW, I BELIEVE WE SHOULD ATTEMPT TO FIND SOMETHING MORE SUITABLE UNTIL NEXT WE MAKE PORT. SURELY YOU CAN AGREE IT WOULD BE IN EVERYONE’S BEST INTEREST.”
“Fine, but we’re not leadin’.” You could hear the creak of Axe’s teeth.
“OF COURSE.” With a tight turn, Black nodded, marching forward with Rus trailing behind with a wink. "AS YOU WISH."
Axe refused to move at first, tugging his empty socket and prompting a sighing Crooks to nudge you both. "I Know You Don’t Like Him, But He Is Fair.”
“Bastard never does anything fer free.”
“And Yet, He Has A Point.”
Neither you nor Axe was reassured but allowed him to guide you forward regardless. Crewmen brave enough to linger eyed your group with various degrees of emotion. When a dog monster growled, another was quick to slap the back of their head, nervously hunching at a glare from both of your skeleton friends. You tried not to show your fear or your growing limp as you passed, hoping Rus' long coat hid what you couldn’t. It didn't seem like a good idea to show weakness around others. The watchful eyes and aggressive postures spoke volumes to your already heightened nerves. Entering the ship did nothing to ease your discomfort.
It felt cramped and pressing despite having more than enough space and light. Unlike the previous ship, several lanterns lit the expanse leaving no ominous shadows or darkened areas. You could easily see all the doors lining the walls as well as the beautifully carved and decorated windowed doors marking the end of the hall. Rus waited near the last door on the left.
It was calm and warm, but you couldn’t shake off the feelings of danger.
“Ya c’n go inside Darlin. Milord’s wait’n.” Rus stood to the side, motioning you inside the now open door.
You looked to your companions. While Axe kept his eyelight on Rus, Crooks’ soft smile and nod gave you enough of a boost to cautiously cross the threshold. It smelled of lavender tinted with something you couldn’t quite place, the overall size relatively small. What looked like a narrow modified canopy bed connected to the wall was on your right. In front of you, under a single window, was a rather lovely desk intricately carved with polished knobs. To your immediate left was an open decorative chest shoved in the corner. Everything was of exquisite taste and quality, from the bedding and carvings on the furniture to the upholstery on the chair at the desk. The few trinkets left out were of fine gold or silver with glistening jewels.
You jumped when the door closed behind you. Axe nor Crooks had made it inside. It had your stomach rolling with nerves. You did not anticipate having the others closed out. Having Black now between you and the only exit made it worse. His eyelights were too bright.
Didn’t Rus call him a lord...?
Your chest tightened at his approach, making sure to lower your gaze.
“TRUE TO MY WORD, THAT HORROR’S GARMENT HAS BEEN MENDED. HAD I KNOWN IT WAS FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS, I NEVER WOULD HAVE HELD ONTO IT.” In his hands was a large linen shirt, neatly folded and dark in color. Holding it out, he offered it to you. “PUT IT ON. I WILL ADJUST IT AS NEEDED AFTER.”
You froze, intently focusing on the simple article of cloth. Was he expecting you to do it here and now? In front of him? Wasn’t it bad enough you were laid bare in front of all those on the deck, or stars, when you pressed yourself against Blue? At least Axe had good reason to see you. Multiple! To willingly undress now in the presence of a man other than your husband...
By the angel, what would Axe think of all this?
Black must have noticed your silent panicked uncertainty when you didn’t immediately take it. Clearing his throat, something in his tone changed. “I SHALL, OF COURSE, REFRAIN FROM LOOKING WHILE YOU DO SO. YOU MAY LEAVE MY BROTHER’S COAT ON THE CHAIR WHEN YOU ARE READY.”
It was hard not to squirm. While that was greatly appreciated, it still felt uncomfortable. Could you trust his word? You hardly knew the man. Perhaps things may have felt different if the room wasn’t quite so stifling or the door hadn’t been shut so suddenly.
Luckily, heavy thumps in the hall distracted Black enough for him to hand you the garment himself, squinting at the door behind him. He was just about to speak again when another set of thumps sounded, this time shaking the door. Growling, he finally turned when the muffled voices following the noise got angrier.
You really didn’t want to do this right now. Not here. Not with all the uncertainties surrounding you.
Taking a slow breath in, you let it out. The sooner you changed, the sooner you could be rid of these unsettling feelings. With unsteady fingers twitching against the fabric as you took one last glance at Black’s back.
One more breath.
The sound of your rattling bones was louder without the security of the coat. Placing it on the chair, you did your best to quickly dress.
The feeling of fabric against your bones was surprisingly comforting as you pulled it over your head. True to Axe’s size, the shirt almost went to your knees. It was so large the fabric pooled on your much smaller frame and reminded you of the nightgowns you used to wear back at the manor.
If only it wasn’t so short.
Though your more private areas were covered, it was not good for a lady to show so much… leg. You tugged at the hem, the sleeves threatening to engulf your hands.
“I’m dressed, my lord.”
A calculated breath was your only answer before his eyelights found you, fuzzy with a slight warble. You had to second guess if you had seen them correctly, for the next moment they were back to their bright and sharp orbs. Getting closer, they traveled over you as he hummed, the heel of his boots clicking as he circled. If you had hair, it would have stood on end at the subtle brush of his hand against your back.
“AS I EXPECTED.”
You startled, yelping when he came around to lightly grip your hips. Instinctively, your hands came to your chest from the forwardness, sockets wide. He paid no mind, eyelights intent on the bunched fabric. He only let go to pull a satin rope from his pocket.
You squeaked again when he reached around you to wrap it around your waist.
“MUCH BETTER. HOWEVER," His gloved hands touched your elbows, slowly moving up your arms to grasp your hands for inspection. “YOUR MAGIC. IT IS MUCH TOO THIN…” He turned them over. “Hmmmmm. Knowing Him…”
Your chest clenched. He was close enough you could feel his ambient heat and wisps of breath.
Before Black could say or do anything else, his door nearly burst off its hinges, a very aggravated Axe forcing it open. Black pulled you into him with a snarl, eyelights vanishing with the click of his teeth. Stuck in a headlock was a disgruntled Rus, resigned to the hold around his neck.
You didn’t know if you could physically handle any more stress.
“BY THE ANGEL, YOU WILL REPLACE THAT LOCK IF YOU HAVE BROKEN IT!”
Axe’s voice was low, grin tight as he took in the scene. “Don’t appreciate the closed door, Black. Hell ya think yer doin’ in here?”
Black placed you behind him, grumbling a growl. “AS I STATED EARLIER, I HAVE GIVEN HER SOMETHING TO ADEQUATELY COVER HERSELF UNTIL WE CAN PROCURE SOMETHING MORE FITTING.”
Axe narrowed his sockets at Black’s squared shoulders. For a split second, you could see the red orb of his eyelight flick over the man in front of you before it focused on you.
“Sure that's all ya were doin’?”
The fabric of Black’s gloves creaked. “IF YOU MUST KNOW, I WAS INSPECTING HER MAGIC FLOW. I’M NO EXPERT, BUT EVEN I CAN TELL IT’S RUNNING LOW. A MORE IMPORTANT QUESTION WOULD BE, WHY HAVEN’T YOU—”
“I’ve been doin’ exactly what I need ta be. Don’t need ta explain myself either.” Rus stumbled into the room when Axe unceremoniously released him to motion to you. “Now, if yer done?”
With a snarl, Black pointed a finger. “NOW SEE HERE YOU–”
Instinctually, you reached out, stopping just before Black’s arm. “My lord, I!” You faltered at his abrupt attention, pulling back to dip your head in respect. “I thank you for your kindness, but I should return to my lord husband before any more misunderstandings occur.”
His eyelights stuttered. “I, I BEG YOUR PARDON?”
There was a beat of awkward silence before Axe broke into heavy laughter, the loudest and deepest you’ve heard from him. It was enough to warm your cheeks as he beckoned you out and away from the room. Black gaped, slack-jawed and sputtering as you passed. You were already being guided onto the deck by the time he was able to call out one last time from his doorway.
“AXE! YOU WILL… THAT… YOU WILL EXPLAIN YOURSELF!”
Axe only laughed harder, closing the doors behind you.
The sun had mostly set by the time you stepped out into the humid sea air. You would have done anything in the past to be able to look up, out, and around but Axe was swift in guiding you down the main hatch. You didn’t want to linger longer than necessary anyway.
You didn’t have Rus’s coat to hide under.
You were grateful for the darkness once you were under. The lanterns were farther spread, some empty of light altogether. It helped ease your mind against the wandering eyes. Most gathered under the brightest lamps, playing cards at makeshift tables, drinking, and socializing while others lounged in hammocks hanging interspersed between the canons. While some watched you pass, Axe was surprisingly good at slipping through the darkest areas to avoid the unwanted attention.
The closer you got to the front of the ship, the fewer people there were until you came upon barrels and crates stacked near and around an area quartered off by familiar heavy sheets. You could even recognize the stack you and Blue had hidden next to, the sheet on that side still halfway pulled down. Axe was kind enough to hold the flap for you to enter.
Finally, you were able to relax the tension out of your shoulders and pained joints. You wanted to climb back into the hammock and rest your aching pelvis, maybe snuggle against Axe and his warmth. The way he moved about though had you gingerly sitting on his stool, setting it upright from where it had been knocked over.
You wondered when that had occurred. What happened after you had been taken?
...
A quiet curse had you looking back at Axe as he re-fastened the makeshift wall. There were a few more rips in it than you remembered. If he had any sewing supplies, you would have to mend them. It was the least you could do as thanks.
You let out a slow breath, peering down at your clenched fists. They were cold and stiff on your lap. Black had been interested in them. The lot of them had been interested in general, but he had seemed so focused.
Your voice was soft, hesitant as you summoned the courage to speak. “Axe? I have so many questions, but I’m afraid… I don’t know if I’m allowed to ask.”
Axe chuckled. “Don’t gotta be afraid with me, Dove. It’s good ta ask questions around here. The more ya know the better, good or bad. Don’t let anyone tell ya otherwise.”
You picked at the hem of the shirt, smoothing it down as much as you could. “Is that true?" Axe simply grunted. Collecting yourself, you forced yourself to ask the questions burning your mind. "What is a Banthos? What does it mean to be one? And what did Black mean when he said my magic was too thin? I don’t have magic. I’m not… I’m not even a monster.”
It was hard not to flinch when, from your peripherals, you saw him stop. His voice had become more serious but thankfully still soft.
“The hell yer not. Listen, I don’t know what you’ve been told, where ya come from, or what ya been through. But you’re as much of a monster as the rest of us. You’re made of magic and hope just like me.” He came over to place your hand in his scarred one, taking a knee to look directly into your sockets. “We’re the same. Dust and all. It don’t matter about anything else. As fer your magic,” he rubbed his face with a frustrated sigh, “let me worry about that. Just know ya got it and I’m gonna make damn sure ta get it where it needs ta be.”
You didn’t know what to say to that, but it sent a comforting feeling to your chest. He was always so warm. It reminded you of your mother.
Nodding, you were about to ask about your first question when footsteps interrupted you. Axe stood, moving between you and the flap.
“AXE, IT IS GETTING LATE. I HAVE TAKEN THE LIBERTY OF PREPARING SANS’ ROOM FOR THE LITTLE MISS. I HOPE YOU HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN.”
Axe only slightly relaxed at the sound of Papyrus’ voice, not moving but calling out to the other skeleton. “I can take her when we’re ready. Just got a few–” he bristled when Papyrus entered and smiled down at you, hand twitching at his side –“more things ta take care of.”
“AND WHAT MIGHT THAT BE SO I MAY HELP?” When Axe only grumbled, Papyrus took it upon himself to continue. “WELL, WHILE YOU FIGURE THINGS OUT, I SHALL MAKE SURE TO GET HER SAFELY TO HER NEW LODGINGS.”
You both tensed. “Papyrus. Paps. At least let things settle before ya drag er away. You saw Sans. I don’t trust him.”
Papyrus looked a little sheepish at the accusation. “I UNDERSTAND YOUR CONCERN, BUT I HAVE FAITH THAT THIS WILL WORK. I MYSELF WILL KEEP AN EYE ON THINGS IF I MUST. He Means Well. NOT THAT, THAT IS AN EXCUSE FOR HIS TERRIBLE BEHAVIOR.” He came forward to place a hand on Axe’s shoulder, humble and pleading. “WON’T YOU AT LEAST TRUST ME?”
You couldn’t place the look that crossed Axe’s face from the question, the red orb of his eyelight quaking until his free hand brushed the edges of his empty socket. “That’s cheat’n…” There was a heaviness to the silence.
When Axe’s shoulders sagged, Papyrus gave him back his space. “All WILL BE WELL. I’M SURE OF IT.”
You were uncertain as to what you needed to do, but before you could stand, Axe nudged you back down. With the reluctance of a stubborn cat, he then went about gathering items he had deemed yours, going so far as draping his favored blanket over your shoulders. When all was said and done, you were left with a surprisingly intricate box full of puzzles, Axe’s blanket, and an affectionate nuzzle to your neck.
It was with a heavy heart and a glowing face that you eventually followed Papyrus back out into the darkness.
You did your best to keep up with his long strides, missing Axe’s purposely slowed gait. You could feel the grinding strain on your pelvis and lower joints with each step. You focused on the clack of your feet to keep your mind off the aching. Papyrus was already several steps ahead of you when he got to the steps.
Blessedly, he turned to wait for you.
It was embarrassing how out of breath you had become from such a short distance, especially when you knew you didn’t technically need to breathe. You were even more so when Papyrus cocked his head to look you over with a contemplative hum.
His smile was kind. “MY APOLOGIES MISS. I KNEW YOU WERE IN ROUGH SHAPE, BUT I HADN’T REALIZED…” He glanced up the steps. “PERHAPS IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR ME TO HELP.”
Without so much as a warning, he picked you up and draped you across both of his arms. You almost dropped your box, squeaking in surprise as he ascended to the deck. Your mind and tongue had stopped working from the suddenness. Though Axe had carried you once before and had moved you a few times, you didn’t quite know what to think of this stranger picking you up so nonchalantly. It was as if it was the most normal thing in the world for him, smile just as polite and kind as before.
With him carrying you, it took little time to cross the rest of the way back through the double doors and down to the end of the hall. Standing in front of the windowed doors, you were only jostled a little when he turned the knob. He used his boot to kick it open the rest of the way with a bang, making you flinch when the glass shook precariously.
You thought you saw a flash of blue, but when you looked, there was nothing there but a railed raised platform with an extravagant-looking bed, windows lining the entirety of the back wall.
You shuddered. It smelled overwhelmingly of snow and cold rain.
Scrunching his nasal ridge, Papyrus walked around a heavy round table with a scattering of papers and a lantern. Stepping onto the platform, he carefully set you down, turning to furiously rip the blankets off the bed to ball and fling them across the room with a fwump.
“FORGIVE MY IDIOT OF A BROTHER. I WILL BE HAVING A TALK WITH HIM ABOUT APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR LATER. FOR NOW, I’M AFRAID THIS WILL HAVE TO DO. AT LEAST THE BED IS EXCEPTIONALLY COMFORTABLE.” He put his hand down to pat the mattress. “IT IS A GIMBAL BED, MADE WITH LARGER MONSTERS IN MIND SO YOU WILL HAVE PLENTY OF SPACE AND WON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE TIPPING OF THE SHIP.”
When you didn’t move, he gently ushered you to sit before making his way to the windows. It was so dark now that the light from the lamp effectively turned them into mirrors. You were grateful, too afraid to look through them. To your relief, Papyrus closed the many curtains for each once. Once done, he gently took your box and stood at the end of the bed, bowing slightly from the waist.
“I WOULD STAY TO HELP YOU SETTLE, BUT I UNFORTUNATELY HAVE OTHER DUTIES I NEED TO TAKE CARE OF AT THIS TIME. BUT DO NOT FEAR, I WILL MAKE SURE SOMEONE WILL BE BY IN THE MORNING TO BRING YOU SOME TEA AND BREAKFAST AND TO WELCOME YOU.” Walking away, he stopped to place your box on the table and extinguish the lantern. “SLEEP WELL MISS.”
With a wave, he picked up the bundle of discarded blankets and walked out the door, closing it behind him.
…
It was frightening, alone in the dark.
Could I ask for a Leviathantale Nightmare x Skeleton Cecaelia reader? Can you base it off this picture:
Tumblr media
Or even the one you reposted from me? You don't have to if you don't want to.
(by the way, the picture attached here is based off of cats cleaning each other with their tongues. Though it might be kinda cute as an idea.)
Hello, hello Fluffy! I loved your art! Thanks again for letting me know about and see them! I enjoyed the conversations too. I hope this meets your standards my friend!
Grooming Bonds
You picked at the exposed joints in your hands, doing your best to get the leftover fish slime and sand out of the exposed magic. There had been a particularly fruitful hunt earlier in the evening and everyone had slowly dispersed into their respective piles to preen now that the meal was over.
Having dragged Dust back into the main nest, Axe held him down while he meticulously picked at the vertebrae of the smaller mer’s back. It had taken a bit of finagling, but Axe had managed to get Dust’s staple hoodie and scarf carefully placed to the side for the rare show of bones. Dream and Cross weren’t far from the pair, helping groom each other while Killer teasingly flicked sand at them with his tail from his position on “the rock”. Understandably, while Dream reverted to stifled giggles, Cross swiped at said tail and threatened to attack if Killer didn’t stop.
In all, after such an eventful day, it was a typical relaxing evening.
However, you had yet to join any piles, not knowing where or who to insert yourself with. Axe would have made a good choice had he not been so focused on a squirming Dust. Dream probably wouldn’t have minded an extra companion, but Cross had asked him first. Killer and Dust… You weren’t sure if either of them would have taken you seriously.
So there you were. With the group but somehow still the odd one out. It was fine. You always had tomorrow to try again…
Or so you thought.
Watching from his perch on the ship, Nightmare suddenly swooped down to sneakily grab you from behind, placing himself close enough to the nest that his tentacles could idly circle the shiver while still giving them space. You were placed in the equivalent of a lap amongst his tentacles.
“It isn’t well that you still sit alone, little fish. These little moments are times of bonding. No one should be alone during such opportunities.”
There were a few chuckles from the others as you squeaked and tried to twist in his grasp, heat blossoming on your cheeks. “It’s okay! You don’t— I can do it myself. The others already had partners anyway.”
Nightmare didn’t take any head, humming knowingly before delicately looking over your vertebrae in a similar fashion Axe was. It was Dream that sympathetically called to you.
“You don’t have to be shy, even if there are already pairs. There is always room for one more. It is more important to have these kinds of bonding moments.”
Killer grinned, peppering Cross with an especially harsh sand cloud. “Lucky. I bet she just didn’t want to get near Criss Crossies stink ~ ”
“Hey!” It was hard not to laugh along with everyone when Cross finally did tackle Killer, their tails and limbs tumbling out of the nest to kick up stray seaweed and kelp. Nightmare only sighed and sunk lower into his mass.
“Pay them no mind. Although inconvenient, play can also be a form of bonding.”
You had to hide the blooming smile behind a bony hand, watching Dream move on to comb over Axe as he worked.
It was nice. In a way, their nonchalance about the whole thing helped ease your tense nerves. Even with the two wrestling mer, you found that you felt comfortable enough to continue cleaning your hands and arms. It did little to take your mind off the relaxing way Nightmares claws passed over you, but it gave you something to occupy you. It wasn’t until you were shifted against the leviathan’s large chest that you stopped what you were doing to look up.
You weren’t expecting the large glowing tongue that came next. For as long as you had been with the shiver, you had never seen Nightmare lick anyone when grooming. The boys did it all the time. Even Dream on occasion, but Nightmare had kept to himself or only helped with joints and recesses.
The sensation made you squeak and giggle, each new pass filling you with warmth as you closed your eyes. Then, to add to your surprise, a low purr began to vibrate against you and the water.
If you hadn’t been content before, you most certainly were now. Something about sharing this moment with the dark guardian made everything else seem trivial. You didn’t need to worry about your place if he was willing to be this close with you. You were allowed to be here. You were accepted and nothing else mattered.
He was kind, and you belonged.
“Better?”
Your tentacles curled and unfurled in embarrassment as you gave him a sly smile. You blamed your rising courage on the guardian.
“Yes. But, I should be returning the favor.”
Floating up, you licked his forehead before slipping down to cling and pick through the vertebrae closest to his shoulders and spine. It made a lovely glow brighten his face with that low purr flaring up again.
“O-of course. If you wish, little fish.”
The rest of the boys were awfully giggly the rest of the evening. But you could hardly complain.
Working on/thinking about Sea of Hope and came back to this song. This gives me MC vibes every time. It also works with things for future chapters~.
Maybe I'm a bit of a sap and extremely indulgent when it comes to this story, but our wet cat is nothin but a precious little bean... hahaha!
Here is a generalized map of the boat in Sea Of Hope.
Our skeleton crew stay in the officer’s quarters near the captain’s quarters, while those like the ships doctor and those of slightly less importance stay in the warrant officer’s quarters. All regular sleep anywhere else they can find a comfortable spot but mostly stay on the berth deck/ gun deck in hammocks with no privacy.
As mentioned before, Axe and Crooks are the only exceptions, having their own makeshift quarters on the Gun deck near the very front of the ship. (Far/ separate enough from the main crew that Axe doesn’t get overwhelmed/ territorial.)
I did not make or create this map. All credit goes to Randwulf at randwulf.com for their hard work. This was one of the only maps that was clearly and easily readable and also had what I needed, that I could find.
Sea Of Hope chapter 7
In which we unwillingly meet far too many skeletons...
~   ~   ~
“What Is Going On Here!? Explain Yourselves!”
The loud voice drew your attention away from the monsters in front of you. It wasn’t a surprise that, with all the commotion, others had started to make their way onto the deck. As it was, three skeletons emerged from the main hatch, moving to stand next to Red. Two of them were on the taller side, standing in various degrees above Axe, the third shorter like Blue. A few other monster types began to appear as well, but they held back in nervous curiosity.
Too many eyes focused on your small group, whispers drifting around you to weigh you down. Moving more onto your knees, you hunched as much as you could, tightly gripping your chest.
How was it so hard to breathe?
Thankfully, Crooks was kind enough to use the distraction to lean down to carefully help you stand. His large hands were gentle as he tucked you into the safety of his side. It made it difficult to hold yourself back from burying your skull against him as you shook with sobs and labored breath. You didn’t even care that you only met him today. Clinging to him, your fists bunched the fabric of his shirt with how tightly you were gripping. He didn’t even scold you. He allowed you to press into him with nothing but soothing words of promised safety.
Somewhere in the back of your mind, you could hear your aunt demanding you have more dignity, but you ignored it. The arm pressed into your back was too much of a comfort. Besides, none of what she had taught you mattered much now, only the words and actions of those currently around you.
Right now, it was one of the taller skeletons that had forced their way into this chaos.
He was a remarkably well-dressed skeleton for being a pirate. He was dressed more as an aristocrat than what you had imagined a pirate would. His clawed hands were crossed over an elaborately embroidered deep red waistcoat, his breeches and frilled shirt the same quality material to match. Even his boots looked well cared for. The only thing that gave him away was the three scared gashes through his left socket and the way he carried himself.
He did not falter at the scene in front of him or cringe at the energy saturating the air as he looked around. His crimson eyelights flared within narrowed sockets, a scowl forming and turning down the corners of his sharp fanged teeth.
You would have thought this skeleton was the captain if you hadn’t already met the man. He had no qualms about throwing out demands as he confronted Red.
“Well?”
Red grimaced under his gaze, looking away. “Axe here’s been hidn’ a woman in his hammock. Got Sans ta check up on things. D’know what’s crawled up his coccyx, but the next thing I know, he’s shortcuttn’ er up here and tryin ta drop er over. Axe didn’t, uh, take too kindly ta that...”
The captain turned his glare towards him, slowly picking himself off the wooden deck.
“She’s a Banthos. A Banthos from a Banthos slaver.”
As all eyes turned to you, you pressed yourself further into Crooks’ side, whimpering around your muffled cries. You didn’t know what that meant, but the way they all turned with such intensity sent a wave of anxiety down your spine.
Axe took a step back, closer to you and Crooks. “You’re a fool, Sans. Can’t see what’s in front of ya.”
You almost missed the second taller skeleton leaning forward to whisper to the shorter, amber eyelights peering at you from underneath a dark tricorn hat. As he did, his long black coat draped open and around the smaller to reveal his bare ribcage underneath. If his companion objected to the intrusion, he didn’t show it, instead tilting his skull to listen. A single gold fang shone from the light, distracting you as he spoke. The distraction almost had you missing what crimson eyes said next.
“We Are Not Fools. Something More Is Going On Here And I Demand To Know What It Is.”
Sans snapped. Any patience he may have had before had clearly run out. “I don’t have to explain anything Edge.”
Movement brought your attention back to the odd pair as Edge and the others began to argue. The taller skeleton had resumed standing to watch over the bickering and placed himself between them and the smaller. The short skeleton still had his purple eyelights focused on you. The bright glow illuminated his sockets, matching what you had glimpsed of his gloved hands and the bandanna neatly wrapped around his neck. The scowl he sported showed off sharp shark-like teeth much like Reds.
However, unlike the others, he must have been some sort of soldier before he became a pirate. His coat was fitted, being a fine black and gold piece one might expect from an officer. He also stood in a straight-backed parade rest. Still, his shoulders were able to subtly straighten as your eyelights met.
His scowl twitched.
“WHAT KIND OF DEPRAVED SOUL WOULD ALLOW SOMETHING AS INDECENT AS A WOMAN GOING WITHOUT CLOTHING? AND TO MARK HER NO LESS. UNACCEPTABLE.”
He was as loud as blue but held a more authoritative tone as he came closer to scrutinize you further. His gaze reminded you of how your uncle would look at the newly hired help.
You flinched when one of his hands came up.
“RUS!”
In a blink, the tall skeleton was next to him. Then, with a nod from purple eyes, he closed the remaining distance toward you.
The arm at your back shifted as Crooks moved to block the two new skeletons, a low threatening rumble sending vibrations through you. “Black, I Advise You And Rus To Step Away From Sunshine.”
Black raised a brow but Rus stopped, slouching slightly and holding up his hands. “Easy big guy. Ain’t here ta cause nothin’.”
Slowly, he removed his long coat and offered it. You wondered if this was the same Rus that spoke to Red earlier. He had a similarly low and lazy drawl…
Black huffed. “YES, WE MEAN NO HARM TO YOUR… SUNSHINE. NOW ACCEPT OUR OFFERING SO THE REST OF THE CREW WILL STOP THEIR OGLING.”
You stared, hesitating under the weight of Crooks’ hold. While your panicked fear had lessened enough for your crying to settle into sniffles, you still did not want to trust so easily again. Looking up, you silently inquired about what you should do.
He met your gaze, sighed, then inclined his head while slowly removing his arm.
Rus grinned, moving closer. “S’ all right darlin. Jus a coat.” Ever so lightly, it was draped over your shoulders.
The weight of it was oddly comforting, smelling of ginger with a hint of tobacco. With how much shorter you were than him, the dark material brushed against the deck. With a sniffle, it was all you could do to quietly thank the man before awkwardly wrapping it tighter around yourself and pressing back against Crooks.
His eyelights brightened, a brief flash of amber sliding over his gold fang.
“GOOD. NOW, IF YOU WOULD—"
A particularly loud shout interrupted Black and caused the rest to stop and turn towards the main hatch. On the uppermost steps, just before reaching the deck, stood a very distressed Blue towing yet another tall skeleton behind him.
The skeleton’s sockets were wide and full with a kind grin. A soft cream and gold waistcoat complimented his eyelights, and he had a lovely red scarf looping over his chest to tie at his waist. It was strange how similar to Crooks or even Edge he looked. The only differences were his height, perfectly straight but blunt teeth, and an overall softer demeanor.
Blue had been out of breath when he had called out to the group, beads of blue sweat running down his skull as he panted. “I’VE BROUGHT PAPYRUS! I CALL FOR A MEDIATION!”
Taking the final steps onto the deck, Papyrus looked around in confusion. “Yes! I Am Here. Let Us Put The Constructs Away Please. I Would Hate For There To Be A Need To Further Patch Our Ship.”
Everything was quiet except for a low chuckle from Axe that eventually morphed into an outright laugh. Soon after the floating bones vanished into nothingness followed by the crumbling skull.
You shuddered. At least Axe was looking less angry and more smug.
“Think we’ll need more than just mediation Papyrus. Good ta see ya though. Glad ya could make it.”
“Yes… Judging By The Way I Was Collected And The Fact That Almost All Of Us Are Here, Something Big Must Have Happened. Do I Need To Step In, Or Just Mediate?”
Sans let out a frustrated growl, hand sliding down his face. “There’s no need for that. The decision is final.”
Surprisingly, before Axe could retort, it was the crimson-eyed Edge who spoke first. “As Much As I Detest It, I Agree With Axe. I Find It Necessary For You To Intervene In This Situation. Sans Refuses To Tell Us What All Is Going On, Axe Is Being Vague, And I Refuse To Continue To Be Insulted. The Only Thing We Know For Sure, Is That Axe Has Hidden And Marked A Woman, And Sans Wants To Be Rid Of Her.” Pointing at Sans, he continued. “I Find It Distasteful How He Is Handling This Situation.”
There was a hum from Black. Somehow he had gotten close enough to almost brush shoulders, Rus just behind him on the other side. Taking a glance at the noise, Crooks’ snaked his arm back around you but otherwise kept his focus on Sans and Edge.
“That, woman, Axe has been hiding is a Banthos. I am not allowing her to stay on this ship. If not overboard, next port we’re dropping her off.”
“With All Due Respect, You Don’t Get To Decide That. We May Not Like It, But A Mark Is A Mark. If It Was Done Willingly, It Is Axe’s Right To Have Her On Board Despite Who She May Or May Not Be. I, For One, Still Have My Doubts. The Banthos Are Not Ones To Lay With Monsters.”
Edge crossed his arms, looking down at Sans as if willing him to object. Sans matched him, back straight and hands balled into fists, his eyelights once again vanished.
“I’m the captain, or have you forgotten?”
Papyrus quickly stepped between them before anything more could be said, looking down at Sans with a stern expression. “And I Am The Quartermaster. Do Not Forget Being Captain Does Not Make You Above The Rules, Or Punishment. We All Have To Follow The Rules, Even If I Myself Have To Enforce Them.” He took his time to look between all the skeletons, pausing at you for only a moment. “Indeed. We Have These Rules For A Reason. So Let’s Get This Settled, It Does Seem As If More Information Is Required.” He turned a smile towards Axe. “We’ll Start With You. I Think We All Wish To Know More About Your Lady Friend And How She Came To Be On Our Ship.”
Axe didn’t pause for one second. Just like with Crooks, he explained how he boarded the Slaver to find the slaves already dusted and the regular crew attempting to dispose of the evidence. Then he went on to tell of how he found you bound, beaten, and half-starved to death shoved in a nook among the supplies. His grin tightened when he told of how he had saved you from being dusted.
However, while not much needed exaggeration, you couldn’t help but notice how he left certain details out that had been given to his brother. You weren’t about to bring it up though. It was about things you didn’t understand and you trusted Axe to know what he was doing. You also did not want to get either one of you in any more trouble.
It didn’t help that you were too terrified to speak up even if you had wanted to.
How unfortunate then, that as soon as Axe had finished speaking, Papyrus and most of the other Skeletons returned their focus to you. From what you could see, in a rare show, Blue lost his eyelights and had a tight grimace. Red refused to look up, brows furrowed as if in thought while Edge’s scowl increased. You couldn’t bring yourself to look at the captain or the others.
“Little Miss, What Is Your Name?”
You wanted to disappear. Your chest still ached and the void of your mouth was terribly dry, but you managed to keep the tremble out of your voice even though it was quiet. Your aunt would have approved...
“Y/N.”
“And Your Surname?”
You hesitated. You didn’t know. You were never given a surname. You didn’t even have or know your mother and aunt’s maiden name. The only thing you knew was the surname of your uncle. But would they accept that? Sans claimed you were a Banthos, but was that a surname or something else entirely? You would have assumed it was the type of cursed creature you were, but that didn’t make sense considering the slaver.
You let out a shaky breath. “I, I was never given... I don’t have one to give. But I lived with my mother’s sister and her husband on his estate. Lord, Lord Henry Dawson.”
He hummed. “What About The Banthos?”
You shook your head. “I’m sorry. I don’t know what or who they are.”
“I See...” Rubbing his chin and squinting, he took a glance at Sans before continuing. The rest of the group remained oddly quiet. “What Was The Reason For You Being On That Ship?”
The energy within your body stuttered, your eyelights in particular, feeling its unsteady nature. You could feel them wobble and fuzz, a fresh batch of tears threatening to spill.
You didn’t want to think about it.
You didn’t want to remember how much their betrayal hurt.
Reflexively, you tightened your trembling grip on the coat, withdrawing into yourself as you forced out what little you could.
“They, They didn’t want me anymore. I am a cursed creature that has lived too long. It was better for them if I…” Your voice began to crack and break. “I was afraid… I tried to run but armed, armed men...”
A boney hand came to rest on top of your skull, rubbing with gentle feelings of comfort. Looking up, Rus stood in front of you, holding your gaze with his intense smoldering eyelights. That same uncomfortable feeling flashed through your mind and down your spine.
The whispers in his touch changed.
Resolve.
It coursed into you strong enough to make your breath hitch.
Straightening, he turned to face the others. As he did, his features hardened into something you couldn’t quite see before he simply nodded to Papyrus. Whatever that meant seemed to appease the softer skeleton, for he then gave a pointed look back at Sans.
Crooks pulled you tighter against him.
“There You Have It. As Long As The Mark Is Consensual… It Is Consensual Isn’t It My Dear?” You were quick to nod. “Good. Then By All Rights, Axe Is Allowed To Keep Her On Board. Now, Tell Me Exactly What Happened When She Was Found In Axe’s Quarters.”
Blue and Axe were far too willing to re-tell that part of your experience, Red reining them back and adding details when needed. Although, Red only added his two copper when things started looking bad for him.
Sans didn’t deny any of it and Papyrus could only shake his head, pinching the bridge of his nasal.
“SANS!! That Is No Way To Be Going About Things. Even Axe Knows That, And He’s Always Throwing People Overboard.”
Sans looked more exasperated than anything. “Paps—”
“I Understand Where You May Have Come From, But, This Is Exactly Why I Explained How We Have Rules In Place. It Does No One Any Good To Overreact.”
“Everyone else is just underreacting. You didn’t see what I did.”
Papyrus stomped a foot. “I Have Heard Enough. Since Axe Has Already Been Punished For The Slaver Incident, He Is Mostly Off The Hook. However, For Not Following Proper Introductory Protocol And Disrupting The Piece, The Little Miss Will Be Removed From Your Quarters. Instead, She Will Be Relocated To The Captain’s Quarters And Given That Bed. Sans, Your Punishment Is To Share Your Space And Sleep On Your Couch, not that you don’t usually do that anyway, And Work On Getting To Know Them Better. You Need To Overcome Whatever Negativity You Still Hold. It Is Not Good For You Or The Crew.”
Your stomach dropped as your ears began to ring. This was bad. This was terrible. The captain had already tried to kill you when you had been surrounded by people. Now you would have to be alone in a room with him? At Night? Where no one would be around to stop him? How was this a punishment for him? If anything, he would be able to finish the job without anyone’s interference.
You were as good as dead…
You could faintly hear more growling and bickering amongst the skeletons, but you could barely hear over the sound of your pounding chest and head. You were definitely shaking again, probably making a racket from your rattling bones. It was hard to tell, everything was muffled. Axe didn’t look to be fairing any better. His eyelight had gone out and his fingers were in his damaged socket.
You looked away. You needed to concentrate on the captain and Papyrus. The other voices weren’t as important.
“You can’t be serious Paps! That. You can’t just… I’m the captain!”
Papyrus looked far too pleased with himself for your liking. “Yes Yes. We Have Already Discussed That. Don’t Make Me Repeat Myself Brother.”
“I don’t trust them on this ship, what makes you think putting them in my quarters is going to make things better? This just makes it worse. There is too much at risk.”
“On The Contrary. You Don’t Trust Her. What Better Place To Keep An Eye On Her Than In Your Quarters? At Least With Her There, You Will Be Less Paranoid About Everything.” His grin widened. “Besides, It Might Give You Incentive To Not Be So Lazy And Finally Pick Up That Filthy Sock.”
Sans grit his teeth, tightly closing his sockets. It took him a moment to compose himself enough to answer. “Fine. But she is to stay in my quarters unless otherwise supervised, and under no circumstances, is she allowed anywhere near the navigation room.” Turning to the rest of the bickering skeletons, they were quick to quiet. “Crooks. Blue. I expect you to put her to work. She will earn her keep like the rest of us. And Axe…” Marching over, he stared begrudgingly up. “She’s your marked, anything that happens will be on you.”
Axe sneered, pulling his hand away from his socket. "Same. Touch her, I'll dust ya."
Sans didn't bother replying. Taking a step back, he vanished.
It made you uneasy how easily he could do that.
But, now that he was gone, all you wanted was to go to Axe. He had become your security, your safe haven. Knowing how the mark on your neck ultimately saved you gave you a greater appreciation and understanding of the man. After what just happened, all your previous doubts had left you. You would gladly let him hold you and mark you all over again.
Luckily, you didn’t have to wait long. Crooks was barely able to remove his arm before the goliath had you pulled against him. You would have embraced him back if you didn't have to hold onto the coat. The others, for the most part, let you have your moment, even though you could tell Papyrus and Black? looked as though they were waiting for it to be over.
Leaning into him, you took him in, breathing deeply against the material of his shirt and quietly giving him your thanks. He grunted, holding you tighter.
"Made a promise you would be safe. Heh. Not doing a very good job of keepin it though, am I?"
It was easy to look up into that concerned glowing orb of his. You didn’t know how, but you wanted him to know how much him just being there meant to you. You wanted with all your being for him to know, even if you didn’t have the right words.
"It's been enough. You have been, enough."
His eyelight wobbled and blurred around the edges while his expression did funny things. Lifting a large clawed hand, he brought it up to cup the side of your face.
"He didn't hurt ya, did he?"
You shook your head and nuzzled into the warmth his touch always seemed to give you. In truth, your hips and spine were sore from where you were slammed against the railing, but it was nothing you couldn't handle. You still hadn't fully recovered from the other boat anyway. You were all right. You hadn't been thrown into the dark abyss that was the ocean. You were still alive.
You had survived.
For now…
Sea of Hope Chapter 5
In which you are on a boat. You can’t hide on a boat...
“Mama? Mama where are you?”
Small skeletal feet clattered against the hardwood floor of the hallway, the air cold with doors rising unnaturally high. As you walked, a slight breeze from the open window behind you, rustled your nightgown.
It was dark.
You knew you weren’t supposed to be out of bed, but you had a bad dream and you wanted mama to sing to you. Clutched tightly to your chest was the little stuffed doll she had sewed for you, it being the only thing keeping you going.
Mama always had a way to make the bad feelings go away…
Stopping, a looming shadow formed and looked down at you from the end of the hallway as you hugged your dolly closer. Your little body rattled and you whimpered.
“M-mama…”
You just wanted mama to help you feel better.
~ ~ ~
You woke to an uncomfortable buzzing of your bones, a cold sweat dotting your forehead. You hadn’t had a nightmare since you were on that other boat. Sleeping in a warm hammock with an almost comforting presence had calmed your mind enough for the nights to be relatively peaceful. Thank the stars Axe had left for the morning so he wouldn’t notice your distress over it. It had only been a week and three days since you had been brought aboard. You really didn’t need to make yourself more of a than you already were.
Sighing, you sat up, grateful your strength had returned enough to do things independently now that you were getting meals with such a rich source of energy. It was rather embarrassing relying on Axe and Blue for help. Both of them had seen more of you than you cared to admit.
Stars, you still didn’t have proper clothes, or any at all for that matter. All you had were these blankets to wrap around yourself. They may have worked the first few days when your injuries needed to be looked after, but now you wished you had something a bit more practical. It wasn’t good for a lady to be so exposed. Axe claims he is working on that, but nothing has come of it so far. It was also too risky for Blue to give you any… thing.
Staring at you from the middle of the make-shift room was the ugliest pig creature you had ever seen. It felt rude thinking that, but there was no other way to describe it. It was about knee height and stood on four hooved legs, practically dragging its round bulbous belly on the floor. You could tell that it had never seen a bath by the way the blotchy pink and black thing’s skin was somehow flakey but also oozing rancidly through brown caked cracks in its crusty hide. Patches of thin coarse hair covered it wherever there weren’t growths, burns, or scars, as if it had a form of mange.
A shiver ran down your spine at the sight of it. Besides it being an ugly disgusting mess, something was off.
It twitched. The beady black eye that wasn’t obscured by a mass seemed to glare up at you from its leaky and scarred snout. If you didn’t know any better, you would have thought the creature was silently judging you, calculating to see if you were worth its time. Every passing moment felt like an eternity until it gave a grunted oink, the sound phlegmy and wet. Then, with a flick of its tail, it turned and waddled over to maneuver its way under one of the fabric walls.
You stared after it. That was perhaps one of the strangest occurrences you had ever witnessed, and Axe had used magic to float things. Why on earth, was there a pig on the boat anyway? Was it a pet, or was it another form of monster?
You were still in a state of bewilderment when Axe came through the flap with your complimentary breakfast, already handing you the bowl by the time you were able to greet him.
It was blessedly routine at this point for him to bring food back to you after the crew had breakfast, using the time you ate to put on his boots and collect the things he would need in preparation for whatever duties he had for the day. He was still acting as the cabin boy, much to his displeasure, so you were mostly left alone except for the times he’d make a point of checking on you. There was never a set schedule for when though, as he was only able to get away if no one had need of him. Funnily enough, he always seemed to bring some sort of tidbit for you to munch on when he showed up.
You noticed early on that he seemed to have a thing for food. Not that you were complaining. You hadn’t felt this rejuvenated since you were very small. You had all but forgotten how it felt to have this much energy…
Axe let out a long, grumbled breath from his stool, grin pulled into an annoyed scowl. You were almost convinced that before you came, that was the only thing he knew how to do.
“It’s gonna be another long day, Dove. The tiny tyrant and edge lord want ta mess with the cannons again. I’ll try ta stop by when I can, but it’s goin ta be difficult ta get away from those two.” He paused to rub the bridge of his nasal. “If I don’t murder someone by the end of the day, I’ll eat my boot.”
You couldn’t repress your giggle. Between the small talks you were able to have with Blue and conversing with Axe, your confidence and comfortability had grown. It helped that you were slowly becoming accustomed to Axe’s humor.
“I am unsure if your dislike is for the cannons or the tiny tyrant and Lord of edges.”
The uptick in his grin had you smiling wider when he looked up. “Heh, good one. But ta answer your question, I’m not very fond of any of them. Cannons are cumbersome and the others are loud perfectionist asshats with a penchant for arguin’. Ya put em together and things draw out longer than what’s stars be damned necessary.”
It was endearing how easily he was able to discuss his annoyances with you. His bluntness was comforting. You didn’t have to worry if he was hiding grudges against you without you knowing.
“I see. So they do this often?”
He scoffed. “Often enough. They’re good at what they do but take some things far too seriously. Think it makes em better’n everyone else.”
“Is that why you—"
“Brother, I Hope You Are Decent. I Am Coming In.” The soft but stern voice was almost as loud as Blues, startling the both of you before you could finish your next question.
Axe was up and on his feet before you could comprehend what was happening, surprise overtaking him as his eyelight vanished. He didn’t try to hide you, but he did place himself between you and the opening, stance wide. In his haste, the second boot he had been trying to put on was all but flung across the way.
“Crooks! Wait!”
You didn’t know whether you should duck under the covers or wait to be told what to do. In the end, you were frozen in place when long slender fingers pulled the fabric to the side and an immensely tall skeleton stooped through the opening.
The one called Crooks stood two to three heads taller than Axe, his thin lanky form having to hunch to avoid hitting his head on the ceiling. Your sockets widened. If Axe was a giant, then this skeleton was colossal. You weren’t sure if you believed the two were related. Axe was broad-shouldered with a thicker bone structure, sporting an almost round skull. Crooks was a sturdy pole with long limbs and edges, his skull stretched out with how pronounced and separate the jawbone was. The way the poor monster’s sharp teeth crowded their mouth exacerbated it, some chipped with others leaning at odd angles. They did dress similarly though, so there was that. The only difference was the red tattered scarf they used as a bandana to cover his head, the long tails draping partway down his back.
You could tell Axe was distressed by how tense his shoulders had become and how his hands twitched, sweat beading on his brow. Crooks only had eyes for him, staring him down with narrowed sockets. You didn’t know if it was disappointment or something else in his look, but whatever it was, your friend felt it.
“Brother, I Have Come For Answers Regarding Your Behavior Recently, And Not Just About You Going Off On Your Own Adventure On That Ship. I Have Noticed That Our Rations Have Been Disappearing As Of Late. Not Wanting To Bring To Much Attention To The Matter Quite Yet, I Have Taken It Upon Myself To Watch The Stores More Closely And Monitor Who Has Been Coming And Going.” He stepped closer, voice lowering. “Imagine My Surprise When, Instead Of One Of The Newer Crewmen, I Find My Brother Pilfering From The Galley.”
Axe shifted on his feet. “It’s not what ya—"
Crooks took another step closer, hands now on his hips. “Are You Hoarding Food Again? You Know We Don’t Need To Do That Anymore Axe. Just Give Me What You Have, And It Will Be Like Nothing Happened.”
“Now hold on, let me explain.” The way he had stepped back spiked your anxiety.
“Explain? What Reason Could You Possibly Have To…” Axe finally moved to the side, rubbing the back of his neck while cautiously watching his brother. “Oh…I… I See.”
You didn’t think it was possible, but Crooks managed to stand up straighter, hands coming up to wring together. He seemed to be in a state of shock as he looked down at you, fumbling to say something but not quite able to get it out until he returned his gaze to Axe.
“Where… Who?... Was This What You…” The poor man looked so lost.
“This is Y/N. They were the reason I had to go. I needed ta, ta help.” Axe had notably relaxed now that his brother wasn’t scolding him. He also stood taller, pride in the grin that spread across his face. “That’s why I’ve been snitchin food. Been takin’ care of her.”
“Why Have You Kept Her A Secret This Long? More Importantly, Why Didn’t You Tell Me? I Could Have Made Arrangements. I Would Have Helped.”
“Didn’t want ya ta get in trouble.”
Crooks huffed with a roll of his eyelights. “Of Course Not. You’d Rather Dig Your Own Grave For No Reason.”
Axe just shrugged. “What can I say, it’s a grave situation.”
“I Will Smack You Brother.”
That was all it took for the two of them to spiral into a battle of wordplay and admonishing threats, Axe’s easygoing laughter reassuring your frayed mind and allowing you to untense. It warmed your soul to see the bond they had with one another. It made you smile. You didn’t think pirates could be so carefree or close. Everything you had ever been told was of how horrendous they were.
When Axe eventually stopped punning, he explained some of the details of how you came to be hidden in his hammock, a lot of it being what he’s witnessed on the boat. Not wanting to relive some of those particular moments, you let your mind wander to other things. Crooks, for the most part, listened quietly, taking in every detail until he suddenly facepalmed and shook his head.
“Axe… How In The Stars Are You So Intelligent, But Also An Absolute Idiot?”
That had gotten your attention.
Looking up from picking at your phalanges, you had to stifle a laugh at said skeleton’s look of utter indignation. “What ya mean Paps?”
Exasperation poured off him. “Did You Truly Think You Could Hide Her In Your Hammock?” Before Axe could retort, he held up his hand. “You Hide Everything In Your Hammock. That Is The First Place Anyone Would Look. That Was The First Place I Was Going To Look. Also,” He gestured dramatically around you. “It Is Very Obvious That She Is In There.”
Axe looked away, a little red glowing on his face. “It’s worked so far. Just needs more coverings.”
Crooks deadpanned, crossing his arms. “No.”
When there was nothing but a silent pause, he forced a breath through his nasal, uncrossing his arms to step closer and put a hand on Axe’s shoulder. “We Need A Better Plan. The Only Reason She Hasn’t Been Found Out Yet Is Because Nobody Knew You Brought Something, Or Rather Someone, Back. However, Others Are Growing Suspicious. Your Behavior Has Caught More Than Just My Attention.”
Axe shifted, an annoyed scowl turning down his grin. “Who? Blue? Or Red? That idiot is more than welcome ta start snoopin. He’d be in for a bad time.”
Crooks groaned. “I Am Going To Pretend I Didn’t Hear That. You Can’t Threaten Everybody With A Bad Time Whenever You Are Inconvenienced. It Will Only Bring More Unwanted Attention.”
“Seems ta work just fine ta me.”
The defeated sigh was understandable. Brushing past his brother, Crooks timidly moved closer to give a little bow.
“Well, It Is A Pleasure To Make Your Acquaintance Y/N. I Apologize For My Brother’s Complete Lack Of Decency. I Would Bring Up Your Mark,” He shot a look towards his brother. “But I Think That Speaks For Itself.  I Do Hope He Has At Least Treated You Well?”
You were once again faced with the dilemma of how to address this person. You didn’t know enough to not make a fool of yourself. Bowing as respectfully as you could, you took care to hold your blanket firmly around you, anxiety crawling up your spine.
“Your brother has been treating me fairly, and the pleasure is mine, M-Mr. Crooks?” Internally you were screaming. So much for all that previous courage.
He smiled, sockets crinkling at the edges. You almost flinched when one of his large hands came to pat your head in a surprisingly soft and gentle way, a warm fondness spreading into you through his touch.
“By All Means Little Sunshine, Just Crooks Will Do. You Need Not Follow Human Formalities Here. This Is A Safe Place. At Least,” he gave his brother another look, this one verging on dramatic. “It Should Be.”
Axe snorted, grumbling under his breath when Crooks then turned to him. “I Don’t Know Why You Insist On Keeping Her Secret, Considering, But If You Leave It As It Is Now, Sooner Or Later She Will Be Found Out. Knowing You, However, I Doubt You Have Taken Anything I Just Said Seriously. So, In The Meantime, I Will Keep A Lookout For You And Re-evaluate Our Rations To Make Sure Our Little Sunshine Is Included. NYEH! I Am More Than Excited To See What The Future Holds! It Is Not Every Day One Finds A Lovely Lady Friend After All! Nyeh Heh Heh!”
Your entire skull lit up as you gaped at his disappearing form. He had even winked at you before retreating out and into the ship, leaving a chuckling Axe behind.
“He’s the best, ain’t he?” His chuckle turned into heavy laughter when you only looked at him in stunned confusion. He almost missed the stool he was attempting to sit on. “Now, where the stars is my other boot?”
The pout you gave him while pointing only set him off again. Stars. You still didn’t know what to do with this man.
If only the both of you had taken Crooks’s warning more seriously…
Later that same day you had been contemplating the absence of Blue. He hadn’t come around for the last few days and you figured it was because he was just as busy as Axe. So, when you heard the warning sound of approaching footsteps, you involuntarily perked up from your place on Axe’s stool. The strange wooden puzzles Blue would bring were always a pleasant way to spend your time. Perhaps you could solve the one you had failed at the last time he had visited.
However, instead of Blue on the other side of the sheet, your hopes were dashed when two low rumbling voices spoke. The first gruff in a pleasing sort of way, the second smoother with a lazy drawl.
You removed yourself from the stool as quickly as you could and climbed back into the hammock. Crooks had said that you were obvious in there, but you didn’t know where else to go. The only thing you could do was slip to the very bottom in hopes the extra blankets would be enough. As it was, the voices didn’t give you much faith that they would be as welcoming as the skeletons.
“I know he’s hidn’ somethin. Ever since we raided the Slaver, he’s been off.”
“D’know what ya mean.”
“I know fer a fact ya know exactly what I mean. I ain’t stupid and neither are you. Now ya comin’ or not?”
The second voice hummed. “Not.”
The annoyed growl that came next had your body going cold. “Then why’d ya come?”
“Interestin’.”
There was a scoff. “Yer just scared you’ll get yer coccyx beat again.”
“Naw. But I ain’t foolish enough ta try.”
There was a scoff. “Whatever.”
Fabric rustled, heavy boots clicking against the floor.
“Yer funeral.”
The growl was a lot closer this time. “Yer fixin’ ta get shanked Rus, so help me.”
It was a miracle you were able to keep from rattling as you listened to Rus’s deep chuckle gradually fade away. Though it was a relief that one of the intruders had left, you knew you still weren’t strong enough to properly defend yourself, and at this point, it was only a matter of time before whoever was looking around found you.
Ironically enough, right after that thought, it had taken all your self-control not to shriek when the hammock jostled and a heavy intake of breath sounded above you, a pleased chuckle following after.
“What do we have here Axey boy? Smells awfully sweet…”
You were not proud of the frightened squeal you made when the blankets were unceremoniously ripped off your upper body. Your chest was pounding as you scrambled to cover yourself with your arms. It did little good, but instinct demanded you try.
Standing above you was yet another skeleton in a plain red linen shirt, the top open enough that you could see part of his sternum and some of his ribs. He was also big, not as giant as Axe, but still a good head taller. His broad chest and scarred bones made it seem like he was stronger than what you might think for a skeleton.
What got you the most though, were the bright red eyelights boring into you. You had grown used to the large orb in Axe’s socket, the light it gave in the dark was reassuring. The glow this monster’s eyelights gave off were like little fires, lighting up his face to accentuate a shark-toothed grin as they grew and constricted. To your horror, what started as slack-jawed surprise, quickly turned into a predatory nightmare.
“Why hello there, sweetheart.”
A sharp, clawed hand glinting with gold rings reached for you. The gut-wrenching fear that it brought had you flinching so hard that you ended up throwing yourself right out of the hammock. He walked around it, eyelights burning brighter and blown wide.
“Hey, no need ta—”
You cried out for Axe, hoping against all odds that what he had told you was true. He said he would come if you were in trouble. He said he’d come if… He said he’d come if you needed him. Your instincts told you, you needed him.
You weren’t expecting the fire-eyed skeleton to stumble, face falling in shock as the air became heavy and charged. An overwhelming scent of iron and pine filled the air. Cursing, the stranger stepped back and spun in one quick movement, attempting to move forward while ducking. Somehow, Axe was already there, barring his way and easily swiping low enough to grapple his fleeing form.
“I’ve warned ya, Red!”
Your world turned to chaos.
In which chaos is the only thing we know
“I warned ya, Red!”
You never really understood just how physically strong Axe was until you witnessed him flip Red upside down by the waist and drop him on his head. He made it look so easy too, as if he was simply airing out a blanket or dumping a bucket. The squawked curse and Red’s kicking legs would have been a humorous sight had you not been in this predicament. There was also the cringe-worthy sound of bone hitting wood.
Spread out on the floor, Red’s now hazy eyelights wobble for a few moments before he rolled onto his front.
“By the Angel… Axe! It’s not what i’ looks like.”
Axe growled, yanking the other onto his feet by the back of his shirt. “Don’t know if I believe that. Ya shouldn’t of—"
Red used that moment to shove his elbow into Axe’s sternum, eliciting a snarled grunt from the larger monster.
“Knew ya was off! This’s a new low even fer you, flesh-eater!”
In the ensuing scuffle, Red ended up tripping back into the makeshift table, breaking out of Axe’s attempted hold. In his haste to get away from an incoming punch, a box full of puzzles and trinkets was knocked onto the floor, a bottle shattering as everything exploded out. Recoiling with a yelp, you hastily moved away from the two fighting males, standing to grab your blanket on your way.
This was the first time you had ever been in the middle of a heated dispute, or brawl if you were being technical, between monsters. They were far more primal than you were used to. Humans would use their fists and yelled words, but it was nothing like what you were witnessing here.
Huddled in the corner, you watched the pair circle, swipe, and dodge, almost having to cover your nasal from how strong the stench of iron, pine, and fire smoke was. Through the snarling and gnashing of teeth, it was clear that Axe was more on the offensive with Red doing his best to get away while still striking back. It wasn’t long before a roar and stumble had them crashing to the floor.
Red had the advantage of coming out on top, using it to bolt towards the exit. When Axe’s claws briefly caught on the back of his boot, he cursed. Then, within a blink, he disappeared out of existence.
Cursing himself, Axe also defied all logic and disappeared.
You don’t know how long you stood there in a state of shock. Your thoughts all ran together until eventually, you managed to pull out of it. Desperately, you looked around the small area. There really wasn’t anywhere you could hide in here. The hammock was out of the question, but the only other thing was Axe’s chest, and you definitely wouldn’t fit inside that, even if it had been emptied.
You glanced at the flaps of a door. Was it possible to find somewhere close by to hide until it was safe? Would you be caught if you wandered too far? From what little you had seen of the other ship, there had been a lot of crates and barrels shoved in all kinds of odd places. Surely there would be some nook or cranny just around the corner you could sneak yourself to…
The choice was taken from you when Blue burst through the very same door. You nearly screamed in fright with the force and speed of it, gulping a breath as you gripped your chest and tried not to tip over.
“Mr. Blue! What—"
“MAIDEN! WE DON’T HAVE MUCH TIME!”
It was only now, that you noticed how breathless he was as well as the blue sheen to his hatless skull. You tensed, dread filling your nonexistent innards. But as you went to speak, a rather angry squeal forced you to look down into your friend’s arms.
Your jaw didn’t seem to work in your confusion.
There in his grasp was the very pig creature that had wandered through earlier. To make matters even more confusing, instead of placing the creature onto the floor, he hurriedly threw the poor thing into Axe’s hammock and wrapped it up in one of the extra blankets like he was swaddling an infant. The whole time he worked, the creature squealed and thrashed. It wasn’t until it was buried under the rest of the bedding that it stopped, resigned to squirming quietly. When he was done, he gently but firmly grabbed your upper arm to lead you toward the exit.
“WE MUST MAKE HASTE. THE OTHERS WILL SURELY BE HERE ANY MOMENT.”
You did your best to keep up, stumbling slightly with from his speed. He was almost out when a startled gargle left him and he pushed you back inside, eyelights small with beads of light blue now running down his skull.
“TOO LATE, CHANGE OF PLAN. THIS WAY!”
He let go of your arm in favor of running to the side wall, lifting it from the bottom and motioning you to hurry underneath. Hesitating, the sound of voices and Blue’s frantic signals prompted you to trust where this would lead. Once through, Blue joined you, pulling you into him so you could both fit in the small space between the cloth and the crates behind you.
It was a little cramped and he had to press himself back for it to work, but you had to give him credit for the ingenious hiding spot. Most of the crates and barrels were too close to the cloth wall for it to be a feasible place for anything to hide. It made you wonder how Blue knew there would be enough room for both of you to hide here. You couldn’t think too much about it though, for no sooner had you settled in than multiple sets of boots entered Axe’s quarters.
You gripped your blanket tighter around yourself as you both froze. Not to your surprise, it was Red who spoke first.
“I’m tellin’ ya Sans, he’s keepin’ a woman in here. Had ta fight ‘m offa me just ta get ta ya.”
Sans sounded tired, not really into what was going on. “So you’ve told me. Multiple times now. You never told me why you bothered to come in here in the first place though. You know that’s also against the rules.”
Axe’s voice cut in. “He trespassed into my space, whatever beating he would have got was deserved. He’s makin’ up excuses cause he lost and ran away.”
“That’s not…” Red growled in frustration, stomping over to what you assumed was the hammock. “That doesn’t matter. Axe is keeping a woman, in his hammock.”
There was some sort of commotion with a few hard steps and the deep rumble of Axe’s growl. It made you wish you could somehow see what was going on. There was a tear in the seam of fabric in front of you, but you didn’t dare move to try to look. From the corner of your eye socket, you could see a slight grimace form on Blue’s tense grin.
Axe’s voice vibrated the air, angry and low. “Don’t.”
Red and Sans weren’t impressed.
“Let go Axe.” “Axe…”
There was a tense pause, the only sound being Red and Axe’s growls until Axe took a drawn-in breath and backed down.
“Fine.”
The growling stopped and Sans spoke. “Alright Red, let’s just get this over with. I don’t feel like being here all day.”
You could hear the smirk in Red’s voice. “Heh, with pleasure.” Fabric rustled and an angry squeal rang out from the pig, causing Red to sputter. “What, that ain’t…”
Sans let out an exasperated groan. “Is this another one of your jokes? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m not usually one to judge, but that thing looks like a troll’s butt wart… Is that seriously what you brought back from that ship?”
You don’t know what kind of face Axe must have had, but his voice had a mix of relief, humor, and smugness to it as Red Floundered. “We’re in love.”
You almost felt bad for Red at the sheer confusion he was experiencing. “I don’t know what that freak of nature is, or where it came from. But that is not what I saw when I came in here! There was a woman hidden in that there hammock! She were a, a skeleton. And… and she, she was naked…”
Blue shifted beside you, getting just a little bit closer, a strange look passing over him for a split second before he let out a slow breath. It made it feel a little claustrophobic in there. Hopefully, now that they hadn’t found you in the hammock, they would leave soon.
You didn’t know why Red wanted to find you so bad, but you really didn’t want to find out. At least Sans didn’t seem too interested in what was going on.
Of course, you were never one to have the best of luck.
As Axe and the others started to argue, there was a thump and grunt followed by the shifting of the barrier in front of you. Your stomach sank as both you and Blue tensed.
Holding your breath, you were slightly relieved when it was only the pig that wormed its head into your small hiding spot. That didn’t stop the shiver that ran down your spine as its one beady eye glared up at you though.
There was definitely something off about the creature.
Its glare aside, your anxiety spiked as it unceremoniously came forward and bit the edge of your blanket, shaking it wildly in its mouth as it tugged it out and away from you.
It was only natural that you panicked, desperately clutching the only thing keeping you from being fully exposed, again. Plus, with how the creature was pulling and shaking, your hiding spot was in jeopardy of being noticed. It had already begun to back out with its prize as it drug and lifted the wall with it.
You had a choice to make, and you needed to make it fast. Release the only thing keeping your delicate form covered, or possibly having your hiding place discovered.
In the end, you folded. There was too much you still didn’t know. You couldn’t risk it. You could survive the embarrassment of being nude. You might not survive an encounter with whoever was out there. Crooks may not have understood why you needed to be kept secret, but something in the way Axe was acting made you question, especially now that Blue had gone through such lengths to hide you.
With a bitter inclination, you let go, surprising Blue as you watched the pig drag your dignity away. His face immediately burst into a glowing blue bright enough to partially illuminate the small space you were sharing, a squeak forming on his tongue.
“M-Maiden!” Even with him trying to be quiet, he was still much too loud.
In a frantic race to shush him, you ended up turning and pressing yourself into him in order to cover his mouth. In his shock he stumbled back with you into the creates behind him with a clatter, you still firmly pressed up against his chest. With how close you were, you couldn’t help but notice how his eyelights dilated to almost fill his sockets before shrinking into hazy little dots. Like a gentleman, his gloved hands didn’t seem to know what to do, eventually coming up to gently grip your shoulders while you still held your hands firmly over his teeth.
Were you in a rather compromising position?
Yes.
Was this the first time on this boat that you were in such a compromising position?
Debatable.
Would you do it all again to keep yourself safe?
Absolutely.
You could feel the warmth of your blush over your entire skull. You were so focused on not imploding from embarrassment, that you almost didn’t notice the sudden eerie silence.
Neither one of you dared to breathe.
The arguing had stopped and you had no idea what was going on. Had they heard you? You didn’t even know if the captain or Red had left, or if everyone was just in a state of hush. You prayed it was the first.
If only you had ever been that lucky.
The entire sheet was ripped from the ceiling, revealing as if in slow motion that, not only had they not left, but they were all now staring at you pressed into Blue, with wide sockets. The culprit of your discovery, blanket still in its maw, was now lying on its side by Axe’s feet as if it didn’t just ruin everything he had done to keep you hidden.
It was Red who broke the silence first, smugly holding his hand out in your direction with the glint of a gold tooth flashing from how wide his grin was.
“I told ya he had a naked woman!”
No one paid him much mind.
Axe was too on edge, his fingers twitching at his sides where his clever and hatchet rested. His eyelight was gone and you could see sweat dotting his skull. Instead of looking at you, however, he was transfixed on who had to be Sans.
He and Blue looked uncannily similar, although Sans had white eyelights and had a bit more height to him. He also dressed like Axe only with a darker blue frock coat over it all. He was also a skeleton. You were beginning to think this was an all-skeleton crew. No one had told you differently and you hadn’t seen any other type of being. The irony of never before seeing another skeleton to now be surrounded by them, was not lost on you.
You were startled out of your shock by Blue gently taking your hands off his face to speak.
“H-Hey Captain. Fancy Meeting You Here. Heh… Heh…”
Oh. Oh no.
“Blue… So uh, Red wasn’t kidding… You okay kid?” His eyelights looked like they were wobbling and fuzzy, a darker blue dusting his cheekbones as he looked you over.
Slowly, you turned to him, glancing at Axe for some sort of reassurance, but he was too focused to notice your pleading look. You didn’t know what to say, or what to do. He was the captain. It would be up to him to decide your fate and you weren’t sure if you could trust him, despite his lazy but tense grin and easy disposition. It suddenly felt very fake.
Thankfully Blue came to your rescue.
“OF COURSE CAPTAIN. ALL IS WELL, considering.”
He hummed and came closer, enough so that he could reach out and grab you if he wanted. “And is there a reason you and Axe are trying to keep her from me and the rest of the crew?”
You didn’t trust how laid-back he was acting right now. He was too calm for what was happening here, voice similar to Red’s only smooth and clear. Not even Blue or Crooks felt this ominous when you met them.
“SHE WAS INJURED, AND I DIDN’T TRUST RED…” His answer was all but blurted as he shifted uncomfortably behind you.
Red was quick to take offense but was cut off by Sans lifting a hand. “Fair enough. But you can see why I am hesitant to believe you. You know this sort of thing is highly against the rules should it be proved otherwise.”
There was a deep menacing growl from Axe. “She’s here of her own volition.”
A flash of something dark crossed San’s face before his easygoing mask was back into place. “That why she’s naked and marked?”
The angry snarl that left Axe’s was terrifying. You understood why he was so angry, but it didn’t lessen how frightening he could be. Red was certainly affected but Sans didn’t even flinch, simply narrowing his eye sockets.
“IT’S NOT LIKE THAT. WE HAVE BEEN NOTHING BUT GENTLEMEN.” Blue did his best to be firm, but you could tell he was nervous.
When Sans turned his eyelights back to you, you involuntarily flinched back, causing him to sigh. “Alright then. I believe ya Blue.” He then held out his hand for you. “The name’s Sans. Captain Sans at your service kid.”
When you hesitated before carefully offering your own hand. “Y/N.”
His smile widened. “Y/N huh, it’s a pleasure to meet…”
He winked his right eye socket as he talked, the left briefly flashing blue and yellow before returning to normal. A strange feeling seemed to run down your spine and in the back of your mind at the same time. Then, as if a switch had been flipped, Sans straightened himself, both eyelights vanishing. His grip on your hand quickly became bruising, the sensation it gave off changing from that of friendly curiosity to the familiar burn you were used to back home.
“Y o u . . .”
He pulled you into him with an angry snarl as Axe loudly cursed. The last thing you saw of your safe haven was the panicked look on Axe’s face as he desperately tried to reach for you before everything turned to a bitterly cold blackness.
It didn’t last long, for in the next moment you were on the deck of a great ship being pushed against the railing, wood digging painfully into your exposed spine and pelvis. You couldn’t even admire the open sky with the almost setting sun from how frightened and nauseous you were. The only thing you could focus on was the empty socket glare and the bearing of teeth from the skeleton in front of you.
Everything was terrifying.
He easily lifted you onto the railing enough that your upper half was above the water. You cried in fright as you struggled to hold onto his arms, afraid if you didn’t you’d fall. Your eye sockets were wide with dread and your chest pulsed and pounded. The smell of snow or maybe a cold rain filled your senses and overpowered the smells of the ocean waves beneath you.
“You have a lot of nerve stepping foot on my ship and taking advantage of my crew. Did you think I wouldn’t find out or notice!” He shifted and you slipped further over the edge.
You let out another cry of fear, glancing down into the dark waters below. “Please! Don’t! I haven’t done anything! I don’t mean any harm, I swear! Please!”
He leaned in close to your face. “I don’t believe you.”
Your chest gave a tremendous painful throb and you burst into tears as you felt him begin to let go. With a screech, you clawed at his arms to hold yourself up. “Don’t!”
The large clawed hand that grabbed your arm was a blessed welcome, even with the painful way it pulled you back over and tossed not only you but the captain further onto the deck. Your shoulder hit hard into the wood before you rolled away from the man that just tried to send you overboard. You didn’t even have the strength to stand up in your fright. Sans was more fortunate, rolling and fluidly getting back up to face your savior.
Axe stood there panting with a deranged look as they both stared each other down. You could barely breathe as the tears flowed down your face. You might not be dead now, but you weren’t going to count your luck just yet. Both men looked like they were one step away from going over the edge.
You hated how much of a pun that was…
“By the angel Axe! Stars, do you even have any idea who she—”
Axe didn’t let him finish before yelling over him. “I know exactly who she is. What she is. It’s you who has the problem. You don’t realize just how—”
“You hid her on purpose, didn’t you?” Sans’s voice was eerily low and calm, stating more than asking.
“You’re damn right I did, and for good reason!”
He shifted, tight grin turning into a sneer. “You had no right bringing that, thing, onto my ship! Either get rid of it, or I will.”
The eyelight in his left socket burst into existence, dilating into a large orb that flashed blue and yellow, the energy billowing out like flames. With the rise of his hand, a great dragon skull almost half his size materialized behind him to face you, the maw opening with the crackle of charging energy. Your horrified cry mixed with several other yelling voices as the energy pulsed larger and brighter.
You were petrified, bones rattling harshly as you began to sob. The light the skull produced was too bright and the energy was beginning to send a prickling burning sensation on your exposed bones. All you could do was lift one arm protectively and close your sockets. You did not doubt that if whatever that was did its job, you wouldn’t be around for much longer.
It was hopeless. What little luck you had was finally running out. What use was there to keep going? If the gods were merciful, even though you were cursed by the devil, maybe they would still allow you to be with your mother…
The buzz in the air shifted, something much angrier and more powerful permeating the area, mixing and snuffing out everything that was already there. Though you could almost feel the rage behind it, with the new energy your bones no longer prickled and burned. However, the loud sound of cracking bones followed by falling sand had you flinching back.
It was the lack of light and a huffed snarl from Axe that had you shakily reopening your sockets.
To your surprise, Crooks stood defiantly in front of you in a defensive stance. In front of him, Axe had the captain lifted off the ground by the front of his coat, the tight grip straining the fabric where his claws hadn’t punctured through. You could see and hear the open-mouthed snarl and baring of teeth. Jagged broken tipped bones floated in the air above the pair as if ready to fall and pierce anything unfortunate enough to get caught in their path. The monstrous skull was already skewered with the same bones, leaking a fine powder as it slowly crumbled away. Standing off to the side was Red, looking appalled and horrified.
A low unhinged chuckle escaped Axe as his voice echoed through your very being.
“Careful, Sans. Made a promise I intend ta keep. I may not be the captain of this ship, but we all know which of us is stronger. I didn’t fight ya in the beginnin for it fer the sole reason of not wantin’ the responsibility. But if ya try something like that again…” The orb in Axe’s socket burned bright, wisps of energy leaking from the creased edge as the taut fabric of Sans’s coat finally tore. “I won’t hesitate ta take your place, whether or not it’s over your dust.”
With a heave, Axe slammed Sans to the ground before standing tall, the latter wheezing from the impact. He didn’t so much as let him breathe before he was speaking again. “I have lived longer than you. Lived through things ya could only imagine. I know more than anyone who you are and have made and learned from more than enough mistakes fer the both of us. So when I say your grudge is gonna take the only things that are important, ya better listen. I’d know.”
Sans slowly and shakily made his way onto his hands and knees, glaring up in labored breath. “I… will never… be like you.”
You couldn’t place the look in Axe’s grin. “Ya sure about that?”
Nobody moved as the two glared at each other until a loud raspy voice and the sound of several pairs of boots broke the sob-filled silence.
Your chest hurt…
