Summary:  Asgard honors the giant as best it can. You continue to dream
The weather turned worse on the way back, until even the well maintained Ring Road was scarcely visible. Eventually, Loki pulled you up into his saddle on Leynarodd's back, seating you flush with his body, and wrapping his back-up cloak around you.
“I will keep you as warm as I may.” He breathed into your ear. “Would it help if I were to whisper lewd and wicked things to you?”
You giggled, but shook your head. “Just cuddle. I want to go to sleep.”
And so, he wrapped his arms around you as well, and let you doze.
Your arrival was heralded with a celebration that woke you with instruments and shouting. You moved back to Acorn as the procession moved through the city, and, still drowsy, participated in a great feast thrown in the giant's honor.
This was a part of Asgardian funerary customs, as taught to you by Saga. The burial honored the dead's body, and the feast honored the dead's spirit. Normally, the revelers told stories of the dead's deeds during life, but no one knew the giant, so instead extolled the accomplishments of all Jotun, across the ages.
You didn't have any such stories, so you listened and ate, as Bogljot described being defeated in a contest of speed by the Forest Giant, Hyrrokkin, as the normally quiet Heimdall sang praises to his many 'mothers', as an older Asgardian you didn't know described the great mountain kingdom of Utgardaloki, for whom Loki was named.
It was dark yet again by the time the feast ended, and Loki led you, stumbling and tipsy on cider, back to his bedroom. He carefully divested you of your armor, stripped every last garment from you, and sat you down on your chair beneath the sunlamp. As the light warmed your skin, Loki also shucked his own clothing, and sat down at your feet. The two of you spent an hour under the warm lamp, Loki reading you various examples of Earth poetry he thought you would like, or resting his head in your lap and letting you toy with his hair.
Finally, when fatigue had clearly caught all the way up with you, Loki turned out the light, and carried you off to bed, where he made love to you until you could no longer keep your eyes open. When you drifted away, it was on a cloud of warm bliss.
                                                                               ******
You found yourself in the glory of open space once more buoyed by sparkling blue light. It came from a gem that you could see now, flying before you like a comet, with yourself gliding along in its glowing tail. You started to reach out for the glittering object once more, but pulled your hand back, vaguely remembering something that put you off of grabbing it. Thoughts echoed within your blood, concepts resolving themselves into impressions in your mind.
You are learning me. Learn me. Learn more.
How? You thought. What are you?
A swirl of something. A blur of light, a different 'texture' than the blue.
Green.
Your right hand itched.
Learn me! Learn me! There is so much of me! Look! See!
Your world jittered, like a heartbeat slightly out of rhythm. With the suddenness of a drop of water in a still pool, the space around you rippled unexpectedly, folded in around you, and instead of nowhere, you were Somewhere.
A world full of green-skinned, red-haired people, thriving, but confused. A woman walked the streets crying out what you assumed to be a girl's name.
Titan, with its orange skies, empty, ruined. A ghost town of a planet.
Earth, running through frigid winds. Other humans ran beside you, dressed for a time long since passed. Frost Giants pursued, driving terror, like dogs, at your heels.
A woman, bald and elegantly androgynous, in flowing robes and surrounded by nothingness. She looked at you with pity, with eyes that pierced right through you.
“You are not ready for what is happening.” She said. “And I am not in a position to help.”
A severed head, the size of a small moon, floating through space. There were lights, cities built upon it, within it. You recoiled in horror, but as you watched, the cities shrank; went dark. The head floated backward, back and back. You blinked, and it was reattached to an impossibly gargantuan body. Another blink and the colossal being orbited a young sun, along with a haphazard belt of asteroids. You watched as they grasped one of the largest of them, and sundered it over their knee.
Wiping the newly exposed surface clean, the being stared out into a space that was dark and sparsely decorated with stars. Then, with fingertips each stained a different color, they grasped the asteroid and began to draw.
                                                                          ******
You awoke, brimming with the feeling that something important had happened while you slept, but couldn't quite pinpoint where that energy was coming from. There was something you felt the need to do, something you couldn't put a name to.
You could barely sit still under your sunlamp, wolfing down your oatmeal and dried fruit. Loki couldn't help but to comment on your increased energy. A wink and a suggestive comment, and you had him back in bed, hands on his chest, riding him for all he was worth.
You sure didn't hear him arguing.
When the two of you were finally presentable, scrubbed and dressed and fed, you took to the halls with your sunlamp in tow. Loki had some meetings to attend today; some job disputes that had come up recently. You had your classes with Saga. A light squeeze of the hand, and you parted ways.
The snow had continued through the night, piling up high against the windows. Reconstruction of your room had been forced to a halt, and all of your things had been moved, either to storage or to Loki's room. The caterpillar in a jar had become a chrysalis in a jar, but the butterfly had not emerged yet. It was possible that the cooler temperatures and lack of light had put it into some kind of stasis: unusual, but not unheard of.
It was still frightening to think that you had caused all that destruction, just because of a dream you couldn't even remember. What if you did that while Loki slept beside you?
There were far more people indoors now that winter had come, doing what Loki had described as their 'real' jobs, weavers and seamstresses, scribes, engineers, jewelers, and so many painters. In every hallway and alcove there was someone with a palette, someone with a pencil, someone carving the plaster into delicate ribbons and knots. Some of them told you they were trying to recreate murals from old Asgard. Others seemed to be trying a new take on their history. Others were focusing on more recent events.
As you walked through the halls, you saw heavily formulaic paintings of what must have been Odin and Frigga, Bor and the terrifying Hela, Heimdall, Thor, and Loki, and many others you didn't recognize. There were battles, and peace treaties, Vanir, Alfar, and Jotnar, There was Njord, Freya, and Freyr, whom you stopped and stared at for a few moments before shaking yourself free.
There were also events and vistas in a different style, some of which must have been pulled directly from the painters own memories. Soaring golden buildings and busy streets, folk dances and blacksmiths forging swords. A riot of berserkers clashing their metal staves, the view of a waterfall ocean.
There were Svartalfari in the great halls, Heimdall destroying a strange vehicle, portals to all of the realms circling each other. There was Frigga, standing tall, holding a sword over her head. There was Frigga, lying in a boat, surrounded by golden light. There was a sparkling red jewel, hanging over the head of a woman you realized must be a stylized Dr. Jane Foster. There were the Avengers again, painted in the heroic style of Asgard, haloed like holy beings. Did the Asgardians see them as the pantheon of Earth?
There was the destruction of Asgard. The great Jotun Surtr, the tiny form of Hela brandishing her thorn-like weapons against him in an almost heroic way. There was the enormous wolf Fenris, grappling with the Hulk. The star-filled expanse of space, with their island spaceship carrying them safely to Earth, a beautiful orb, painted as though seen through a window.
There were the mountains and river outside, rendered in such marvelous detail that you recognized the exact place. There were nightscapes of the Northern Lights.
And there was you.
Your little figure, next to Loki, with your flower crown helm. Among the longhouses of Trolerkaerhalla, wearing the cloak of a Seidkona. It was a very strange feeling, to see yourself immortalized like this. The impostor syndrome flared up, heavy and loud. Logically speaking, you had made history. But why should it have been you? Why should any of this be you?
You hurried through the increasingly colorful halls, seeking out the library. There would always be this battle inside you, between acknowledgment that you were deserving of good things, and belief that there were others so much more deserving.
You rushed into the library, with it's nice new door, and set up your sunlamp. Saga handed you your drum. The Valkyries were here, as well as an ancient, wizened woman who had probably been a Seidkona since the Parthenon had been built. She instructed you strictly, but patiently in the primeval rhythm of Seidkona ritual. There was a chant she was teaching you, a mystical affirmation ritual in a bygone dialect of the Asgardian language, so archaic that the meaning of the words were lost even on your venerable teacher. Saga understood them, but since she was not a Seidkona, she was in essence, forbidden from speaking them.
You got the feeling that it annoyed her a bit.
You were walked through the chant, and the drum beat over and over, committing the sounds to memory, like you had for the past few weeks. The only thing you were missing was the very last syllable of the chant, the knowledge of which would only be imparted on you at the eve of the Buridag festival. Before then, you would not be allowed to speak, or even know it, for fear of completing the spell prematurely.
After your lessons, you spent a little bit of time in one of the library's side rooms, where Asgard's salvaged art treasures were kept. Lofn and her twin Sjofn, who were in charge of preservation, display, and upkeep,  were both all too happy to educate you on what they were. Sjofn had just finished cleaning and labeling a collection of Nornheim knives, very similar to your own. You could see the shift in shape and handle style that had occurred over the years of war with Asgard.
They were all made of nornbein, with stone handles, though many of them had been engraved with the names of the Asgardians who had claimed them. Yours had not. In comparison, your knife, with its lance-like blade and cylindrical handle, was clearly from the latter period of Nornheim occupation, while the earlier knives were more leaf shaped, with flattened handles. You wondered how many hundreds of years those changes represented, with rock trolls carefully shaping the blades to their preference, and picking their favorite stones; blue and green, gray, violet, white, banded, and your own pink ruby, to carve into handles. Did the color and type mean anything to them, or had it just been personal preference?
These knives all represented Asgardian lineages which had died out, with no one left to inherit the blades. It was a sad collection to look at, as sad as where the knives had come from in the first place.
Lofn had templates from past Asgardian fashion designers, arranged on an enormous poster board, and carefully glued down flat. As you watched, she affixed strange little clip-like devices at all four corners, and at regular intervals along each side.
“They are useful storage and protective devices.” She explained. “We can make them from Midgardian materials too. You see, when activated, they form a protective field.” She tapped each of them in turn, and they lit up, covering the huge poster board in a very slight, almost imperceptible glow.
“It is protected now.” She announced. In a swift and startling movement, she grabbed one of the newly cataloged knives and stabbed the board with a ferocious growl. You jumped back, even as the blade bounced harmlessly off. She laughed as a glaring Sjofn snatched the knife back. “You see? It cannot be harmed. We protect our precious things in this way.”
“It has another use too.” She grasped the edges of the poster board and squeezed them together. To your amazement, the entire thing-easily as wide as you were tall-shrank to the size of a sheet of paper. “Look, do you see?”
She touched the field and it reacted like an electronic tablet, magnifying and moving across parts of the board, so you could see the details up close.
“You see, don't you? You see?” She asked.
Your gaze shifted, away from the fashion poster, away from the knife collection, to a work of art that had caught your attention earlier in the year. An artwork that wore the same preservation devices.
Ymir's Dreamscape.
“You see.” Lofn said.

George RR Martin: dragons are weapons of mass destruction, they're symbols of destruction and not of rebuilding, it's why the targaryens lost their power because their rule was built on fear and when the dragons died it only took a small spark to cause a rebellion, daenerys should read fire and blood so she can learn how not to use dragons daenerys herself: dragons plant no trees, If they are monsters than so am I Yall: i cant read suddenly i dont know
LMAO! I can’t even call that paraphrasing since this jumble of out of context gibberish completely misinterprets GRRM’s words and intent.
First off, no one said dragons weren’t weapons of mass destruction. Them being powerful weapons is pretty obvious. Them being weapons does not erase the violence and cruelty of characters who do not have them. The mass destruction the Starks and Lannisters have wrought against the Riverlands and Westerlands was done without the aid of dragons. So was the mass destruction the Greyjoys and Boltons wrought on the North. The Tyrells were able to commit mass murder by cutting off food supplies, which led to mass starvation, which was their specific intent.
Dragons are dangerous. Obviously. So are people, as George R. R. Martin goes out of his way to tell us in every chapter of his work. The man literally depicts Robb, Stannis, Balon, and Joffrey as equally as violent toward the common people and the land of Westeros. He even gives Dany this metaphoric image of the four of them:
“In one room, a beautiful woman sprawled naked on the floor while four little men crawled over her. They had rattish pointed faces and tiny pink hands, like the servitor who had brought her the glass of shade. One was pumping between her thighs. Another savaged her breasts, worrying at the nipples with his wet red mouth, tearing and chewing.” -- A Clash Of Kings
And that is far from the only time he frames them in an equally negative light given their level of mass destruction.
when the dragons died it only took a small spark to cause a rebellion, daenerys should read fire and blood so she can learn how not to use dragons
You think Dany should read Fire and Blood? I agree. I hope she gets a copy once she arrives to save Westeros from the warlords, opportunistic politicians, and the Others. Though you should probably try to find someone who can read it to you and explain what all the big words mean. If you look in that book, you will see that the Targaryens became extremely popular and loved. They decreased the amount of war and destruction, they streamlined the laws, they established roads, and they removed a couple of the abuses that were the norm. They were far from perfect. But in that imperfection, Dany could learn from them too.
As for a “small spark” causing a rebellion as soon as they didn’t have dragons... *sighs* If you don’t know about a topic, that’s fine. Not everyone can be an expert on every topic. But you Sansa stans (yes I know you’re a Sansa stan and you probably have that hideous image of ST with her trademark vacant expression and that ugly ferret crown as your icon) should actually fact check yourselves before trying and failing to present yourselves as an authority on anything. The last dragon died in 153 AC. The Targaryens were overthrown in 283 AC. Even before 153 AC, the dragons that lived either weren’t under their control, were pretty young, or were deformed. In other words, they continued to rule Westeros without dragons for a significant amount of time. In that time, not only did they rule, but they were able to bring Dorne into the realm peacefully.
Even the wars they had were far fewer than the amount of constant wars that happened while the kingdoms were separate. The Blackfyre Rebellions were sparked by Westerosi racism and xenophobia against the Dornish, as well as the greed and opportunism from the Andal/First Men supporters of the Blackfyre claimant. Notice how in those rebellions the people of Westeros supported either the Targaryens or the Targaryen blooded Blackfyres? No matter which side the lords took, they were supporting a Targaryen because they support that family. Like in real life civil wars, they just supported different members of that same royal line. It wasn’t because they feared them. They wanted their rule. They just wanted the rule of a specific claimant over another based on their own values or what they thought they could gain from a change in Targaryen leadership.
Even with the Baratheon rebellions, they were still Targaryen blooded claimants. With Lyonel Baratheon, he felt his family was insulted when an engagement between the crown prince and his daughter was broken so the prince could marry a peasant. This might seem like a “small spark”, but this would have been considered hugely offensive by the classist nobility. Note how this rebellion was resolved incredibly easily to the point where I don’t even think it warrants being labeled an actual rebellion. It seems more like it was set up for the next Baratheon rebellion since it resulted in that House gaining even more Targaryen blood than it already had. That’s the thing, the nobility wanted their children to marry Targaryens. Doesn’t sound very fearful, does it?
Robert’s Rebellion wasn’t set off by a “small spark”. The kidnapping and rape of the Lord of Winterfell’s daughter and the betrothed of the Lord of Storm’s End is not insignificant. It also didn’t set off the rebellion. The murders of multiple lords and their heirs is also not a small thing. It didn’t set off the rebellion either. What set it off was the combination of those two events with the demand for the executions of the new Lord of Winterfell and the Lord of Storm’s End. Those events taken separately are not small sparks and they certainly aren’t small when put together. It took something HUGE to make a big part of the realm turn on the Targaryens. Even still, the rebels were in the minority since most of the other regions either stayed out of the conflict waiting to see how it played out or stayed loyal to the Targaryens. If Tywin had continued to stay out of the conflict, the Rebellion could have lasted indefinitely with either side winning since the Crown’s forces outnumbered them and occupied the Stormlands.
You also seem to miss the fact that quite a few people in Westeros are still Targaryen Loyalists and want to restore them to the throne. You even miss the fact that Robert, Joffrey, and Tommen’s claim comes from their Targaryen blood.
So no, the Targaryen rule was not based purely on fear. They clearly retained loyalty and love without the benefit of dragons as weapons.
daenerys herself: dragons plant no trees, If they are monsters than so am I
It’s funny how you can try to quote the book while having no understanding of the passage you’re quoting. Here’s the paragraph you’re referring to:
Mother of dragons, Daenerys thought.Mother of monsters. What have I unleashed upon the world? A queen I am, but my throne is made of burned bones, and it rests on quicksand. Without dragons, how could she hope to hold Meereen, much less win back Westeros?I am the blood of the dragon, she thought. If they are monsters, so am I. -- ADWD
This takes place in Dany’s second chapter of A Dance With Dragons after she has captured and chained two of her dragons and failed to capture the third. Why is she trying to chain them? Because Drogon killed one (1) child. That’s right. Not only is Dany compensating the people for the sheep her dragons were eating. She has no tolerance for them killing innocents. The quote above is not her glorying in the destructive power of the dragons. Nor is she going around without an ounce of guilt for terrorizing, maiming, and murdering innocents the way Robb, Balon, Stannis, Joffrey, Tyrion, Cersei, and every other leader in Westeros does. That is what this passage is PROVING. Seriously, using the “If they are monsters, so am I” quote is proving that Dany has guilt over the life her dragon has taken and that she has taken steps to prevent that from happening again. Compare that to Tyrion’s complete lack of care when it comes to the mass murder his family is causing:
"A lordling down from the Trident, says your father's men burned his keep, raped his wife, and killed all his peasants."
"I believe they call that war." -- Tyrion, ACOK
While Dany is trying to preserve lives, the mass murdering leaders of Westeros see murder and rape as the norm and completely acceptable. Even the noble Robb Stark tried to move the carnage that he and Tywin were inflicting on the Riverlands into the Westerlands and was upset that his plan to do so was partly thwarted by Edmure. His issue wasn’t with the common people suffering and dying. He just wanted the suffering and dying to happen to the common people of the Westerlands (the ones who hadn’t been forced into service as arrow fodder by the Lannisters yet) instead. Yet, you’re trying to use Dany’s guilt at one (1) child being killed by her dragon as proof of...something?
As for Dany not planting trees, yes, she fears that’s something Targaryens can’t do. But the text shows that her ancestors could and did. Dany is also planting trees in ADWD and was in the process of making Vaes Tolorro bloom in ACOK before she was invited to Qarth. The Golden Company (who wants to put her and Aegon on the Iron Throne as a pair) are even upset because they think she’s only interested in planting trees in Meereen.
When analyzing a literary work you have to understand that what the characters fear and the guilt they feel are not signs of their permanent situations. They’re signs of their internal obstacles that will be overcome in their arcs. Dany fears her dragons and fears herself and fears that she won’t be able to achieve peace and positive societal growth. Its good that she fears these things because this shows she acknowledges these issues so they can be overcome. The current Westeros leadership don’t see the issue in their mass murdering, which is an issue all on it’s own.
Its alright if this series is above your comprehension level. There are books out there for you to read that are better suited for your capabilities, like Hop on Pop or Green Eggs and Ham. It’s probably best if you stick to those.

Can you tell us anything more about John Hartnell's time on the Voltage?
Hell yeah, I can! I have some pictures from the log books I can post later, too. I legit sat for H O U R S reading tiny handwriting from the master’s logs. Most of the logs were lists of chores, punishments, notes on the weather, and any major events. John’s time on the Volage can be divided pretty neatly in half, between the ship’s North American tour, and its Irish Sea patrol, all between 1841-45.
The North American part was probably pretty exciting for him, considering that he’d been a shoemaker since he was thirteen years old. Compared to what his brother had been up to on the Volage (the Aden Expedition, Battle of Chuenpi, etc.), it focused less on military ventures and more on transportation and patrol. The first major thing it did was in December of 1841, when it accompanied the HMS Warspite and HMS Thalia in taking the King of Prussia, Frederick William IV to England to attend the christening of the Prince of Wales. After that, it scurried over to Plymouth to get new fittings, and then took off for the Caribbean.
A lot happened in the Caribbean, and reading through the log books (always written in very non-emotional language, but still entertaining) paints a very eclectic picture of their activities. The Volage went to Jamaica first, awaiting orders until they were ordered to go to Saint Martha to pick up... $800,000 in gold. Legit, that sat on the Volage for two months until they dropped it off in Port Royal. By then, half the crew was incredibly ill with a mix of diseases including what might have been dysentery. Amazingly, for all of John’s terrible luck, he doesn’t appear on the sick list, even as one of the lieutenant’s eventually died as well as the clerk.
They scurried back and forth across the Caribbean from January of 1842 until they departed for Halifax, Nova Scotia later that summer. (Land of @theiceandbones!) In all honesty, the Volage didn’t get up to much during it’s time in Halifax. They didn’t necessarily have a mission, but it does make for some really entertaining reading! There was a lot of shore leave, for instance. Here are some of the notes I wrote on my read-through between the Caribbean and Halifax (which is from ADM 54/312):
Mondays and Fridays are mandatory clothes-washing days.
8th of July 1842 - “Punished Michael Logan with 48 [!] lashes for Disobedience of Orders and Insolence”
12th of July 1842, 6pm - “Committed to the deep the Body of Samuel Marvin (AB) Deceased.” / “Departed this life William Baillie (boy) - Buried at sea on the 13th.”
18th of July 1842, 10:50 pm - “Heard the report of several Guns from the North” [in Halifax]
20th of July 1842 - Halifax Citadel visit and the burial of Robert Webb (boy), Samuel Gibbon, John Barnes, and Samuel Brummage (carpenter’s mate) on shore
Godden reports that several warm nights, sailors were permitted to use their hammocks and sleep on the beach! (I put a smiley face next to my note here!)
Most of their Halifax mooring was spent cleaning. Lots of repainting, holystoning, repairing, etc.
Multiple discharges for “uselessness” and “disgrace”.
The latter note is really interesting, considering that none other than Charles Dickens visited Halifax that same year, and made note of sailors making total idiots out of themselves on oysters and champagne. Indeed, there are plenty of punishments recorded for that summer for drunkenness, insubordination, and desertion, again sometimes up to 48 lashes. (I’ll post a picture of the log just to confirm that.) On a high note, John Hartnell wasn’t punished once! And believe me, I looked!
They did have to have some repair work done to fix a leak in October before scurrying back down south with the “Squadron”. Godden makes some pretty boring notes about looking at the United States coast (as in essentially saying, “Yep, there it is!”) before they hang tight to the coast of Mexico.
The Volage appears to have been outfitted for doing survey work, which is part of what they did for the next few months. Between that, mooring for absolutely nothing, and hanging out with slave ship hunters (I like to think they high-fived the HMS Racer at some point) their zig-zag order of ports of call are:
Barbados > Puerto Rico > Grenada > St. Vincent > Jamaica > St. Lucie > Antigua > Jamaica (long-term Port Royal mooring) > Haiti
By early 1843, the Volage was headed back home. They docked in Plymouth for a time before getting their next orders for the Admiralty for the apparently much-maligned Irish Sea duty. At this point, Captain William Dickson had a temporary replacement for the deceased Lt. Davey, but eventually, that lieutenant had to leave as well. Captain Dickson did get a note from the Admiralty that he was to get his replacement at the Cove of Cork, and according to the sudden burst of tiny handwriting at the bottom of the page on Tuesday, August 29th, 1843, Captain Dickson totally forgot about that. Literally, the note for the day is kind of falling off the page from squeezing it in, but reads: “Read the Commission of Lieut J Irving”.
Because Lieutenant John Irving hopped on board as a new replacement, thus using those sweet, sweet letters of his to describe the next few months. He was absolutely meticulous about dating his letters, and having them on hand in his memoir made it easy to line up with Godden’s notes in the master’s log, confirming everything between the two of them. This time, Irish patrol got kind of exciting.
First, here’s Irving talking about joining the Volage, saying much nicer things about Capt. Dickson considering the captain was probably going, “Oh shit right I forgot we were doing this.”
“To my great joy I found the ‘Volage’ at anchor here. I was afraid she might have gone somewhere else. I went on board direct from the steamer, and was introduced to Sir William Dickson, the Captain; rigged myself in a blue coat and a pair of epaulettes; the hands were turned up, and the Captain read my commission appointing me lieutenant of the ship to the ship’s company. There are three of us. I am the second in seniority. Our mess consists of seven--viz., three lieutenants, one master, surgeon, a lieutenant of marines. They are all very good fellows. I was three years messmate of one of them in a former ship, so am comfortable in that respect.”
Irving noted that the officers were frequently invited to parties in Cork (”I could be at parties every day if I liked;”), and Godden does say that the rest of the crew were given shore leave fairly frequently, even though they didn’t have enough officers to allow them to leave as often.
For the next four months, the Volage remained at Cork, doing patrol with several other man-of-war’s. On land, there were frequent clashes between the Protestants and the Catholics, but more importantly, there were the Repealers following Daniel O’Connell’s urging to repeal the Acts of the Union and re-establish the independent Kingdom of Ireland. Between Irving and Godden, the image of this time from the perspective of the Volage is one of a lot of bloody rumors and high tension (a Protestant curate was killed, houses were being burned down). However, O’Connell’s followers were very civil to the sailors and actually invited some of the Volage officers to visit their homes. Irving called their hospitality “quite Highland”.
The Volage was temporarily relieved of its patrol in December, and returned to Plymouth by January of 1844 for refitting and repair work after shearing off part of her keel. Godden and Irving both noted that sailors and officers were boarded on a hulk, or a non-sailing ship. Godden also noted that several sailors were permitted leave to go visiting nearby. (John Hartnell did have family in Plymouth, and Thomas Hartnell may have been visiting the area at the same time, if a pet theory of mine holds up.)
They were back in the Cove of Cork by February, with the Volage now as the flagship. During a period between February and June, the Volage frequently made trips between Cork and the town of Bantry, after further pro-Repealer agitation began to raise tensions once more. Godden’s log doesn’t say much on the subject aside from weather reports and notes on officers leaving the ship to attend parties, major gatherings in town (there’s a really interesting bit from Irving on scaring the bejeezus out of a group of paraders and stealing the Waterford city flag), and switching out officers. However, the tensions once again didn’t amount to much more than far-off reports of violence and a few observations of pissed-off “pisantry”. The Volage did return to Plymouth for Christmas before returning for a short turn in Cork, and then being paid off completely. The log for that topic shows that John Hartnell was paid off on February 1st, 1845.
As far as what life would have been like for John Hartnell on the Volage, it’s hard to say for sure since, once again, Godden’s logs are impersonal. However, he was responsible for recording all punishments, injuries, illnesses, and deaths, of which there was no lack. He also kept meticulous note of what chores were to be done on particular days, as well as drills. I noticed there was a lot of repetition in the chore schedule, and there was a slight uptick in sailors suddenly taking ill with “unknown” illnesses about two and a half years in, especially on days that had chores requiring a little more elbow grease.
But I think, as I said, this would have been very exciting for someone like John. After all, he voluntarily signed up for the Erebus four months after signing off on the Volage. Unfortunately, we don’t have any letters to or from him that might hint to how he felt during this time, so we have to take it from his actions rather than his words. I like to think he enjoyed himself.

If you and the owners of all the other big pentagon blogs would have a sword battle to the death, who would win? Who would lose? Who do you reckon is secretly a good swordsman?
Okay so this is a really fun ask but since it's not my place to decide on who are the "other big ptg blogs" I'll just do it with some of my mutuals! I hope it's okay~ I GOT WAY TOO INTO THIS ASHSJSNSM IT’S REALLY EXTRA AND DRAMATIC
It's the year 18XX, we're fighting for survival, only death or life ahead. There's many powerful uni legends that are going to confront eachother but only the strongest will remain. The prize you ask? Jo jinho's blessing, Jo Jinho's approval, he the glorious will name the winner as the official, the only and THE BEST swordman in existence.
The competitors are @kihno (E) @pentangels (Milda) @antihongseok-network (Escher) @yeosprout (summer) @soft-pentagon (me) @yeocxlt (Sumi) @astarwithhismoon (Andrew) @chiveburger (Candice) @wooseoks (cat) @airportver (aleks) @incorrect-pentagon (Dani) @hongshoes (Mel)
And then IT BEGGINS!
1) It starts of with Sumi VS Andrew. A tragic destiny 😔 siblings fighting... Couldn't have been pared in a worse way,, but it's life! Sumi dies because she's really clumsy.... Actually it wasn't andrew who killed her... She stumbled, hit her head and BAAM GONE!!! we couldn't even appreciate her sword skills 😔😔😔 anyways ANDREW WINNER OF THE FIRST ROUND!
2) Cat VS Aleks. A tough fight I'd say.... They'd probably rather be drinking tea then fighting so they aren't doing it that enthusiastically.... aleks eventually stabs cat because she wanted to be done with it fast, she has more stuff to do, no mercy 😔. ALEKS WINNER OF THE SECOND ROUND.
3) Me VS Mel. A fight between lovers, well at least one sided 😔. I was in love with Mel but she didn't knew, plus she was on a relationship with the wicked fool hongseok,,, she the, oH SO POWERFUL Mel, showed how skillful with the sword she was, she stabbed me multiple times. As I was lying on the floor, blood coming out non stop, tears of bitter unsaid feelings, I looked her and the eyes and I said: "Hong ain't shit". As I close my eyes and let my last breath poetry was made. MEL THE WINNER OF THE THIRD ROUND.
4) Escher VS Milda. Two big candidates, both skilled on their art. But Escher has a weakness 😔 shinwon is watching, shinwon who escher hates (read as "loves"), shinwon who she wants to prove wrong. Previously the competition they bet, Escher she'd win whoever she'd confront EXCEPT Milda, she was too powerful, a brave soul. Shinwon joked and bet Escher would win even against milda. They started to argue, it wouldn't stop... And so we back to the present day, the competition day: Escher who always knew she couldn't win the talented milda, perished. She might have lost the competition BUT she won the bet with shinwon, she looked at shinwon and she whispered: "Told you so dumb bitch." MILDA WINNER OF THE FORTH ROUND.
5) E VS Dani: An unusual situation these two found themselves into. Dani was the royal fool, the funniest bitch in the kingdom, E was the most beautiful and charming lady you, a mere peasant, would ever put your eyes into. How and why were they fighting for life you ask? Well the oh glorious god who's writting this decided so. Anyways,, Dani dropkicks E, she falls, Dani feels bad and helps E get back on her feet, E, beautiful BUT ALSO sneaky as a fox, dropkicks back, Dani falls with her head and dies. As previously has happened to her cousin Sumi,,, being a fool runs in the family. E WINS THE FIFTH ROUND.
6) Summer VS Candice. Finally, the clash of titans. Friends to rivals. Candice, a poet who used to write the most enduring essays about ptg, wasn't experienced on how to use a sword even, but she was there because she wanted to slap summer at least once. I'm not sure why, maybe she got tired of all of her kinks publicity shown on twitt*r, or whatever that was at that time, the only certainty was the slap had to be delivered. And it was indeed delivered but summer got sad so she killed Candice. Fast and efficient. SUMMER WINS THE FIFTH ROUND.
As the first wave of the competition was done only 6 candidates were remaining. We are jumping right into it because the story is getting long.
7) Andrew VS Aleks. Andrew was a kid.... Aleks, a weakling at the heart, could never hurt a kid.... Andrew also could never hurt another person..... How could this keep going then? Aleks eventually gave the first and final stroke 😔 Andrew had to go, aleks is a busy person. ALEKS WINNER OF THE SEVENTH ROUND.
8) Mel VS Milda. Two of the strongest in town, no one could compare. They fought. Blood, sweat and tears were spilled, no one wanted to lose, it lasted one hour but eventually 😔 milda delivered the final blow. Mel, on her dying moments looked up to the sky, peaceful. She felt her heart get warm and she said "now that I'm dying maybe Hong really ain't shit". And I think that's beautiful. MILDA WINNER OF THE EIGHTH ROUND.
9) E VS Summer. Tragic fate once again.... They were long lost childhood friends. A truly TRAGIC destiny of having to meet in these conditions 😔😔😔 E a beautiful lady with sadly no knowledge in the sword art died by summer hands. Summer again was sad. SUMMER WINNER OF THE NINTH ROUND.
As we enter the final round, 3 candidates will fight for life and for Jo jinho's blessings. Who will be the so called master of the sword?
10) Aleks VS Milda VS Summer. The best of the best. Aleks is so tired of it she's DONE so she somehow manages run away and goes take care of her own business. Milda and summer remain. A battle written in the stars I'd say. Both aquas, both skilled, both unstoppable. They fight all night long, no rest, no water, no food, only blood. Eventually summer can't do it anymore, she's EXHAUSTED, she's no longer sad, she let all her stress go, she's in a peaceful state of mind for once. Milda thinks "it's my opportunity", she runs towards summer and she delivers the finally strike..... SIKE...... They end up killing jinho because WHO decided!!!! HE!??! COULD declared who the best swordman is?? Tf??? In this economy???? Milda helps summer get up and that's, that's how the kingdom of aquas starts.
THE END

In The Royal House.
Tumblr media
➳  As a princess who knows how to handle a sword and an arrow, what happens when Prince Jackson falls for Minjung at the time when she saved the King?
characters ➵ Jung Minjung, Jackson Wang
warnings ➵ violence (?)
Tumblr media
"Is this really necessary?"
"Princess, you got to be smart academically too, you know."
"Are you saying that I'm stupid?" The princess scoffed as she looked towards the car window.
"At least I passed with flying colors on shooting the test boards." Princess Minjung commented, earning an amused smile from the butler.
"And why do we have to go to the Wang kingdom just to attend my classes? Why can't we just go to ours?"
"Your highness, the Wang royal house has excellent tutors to guide you. It's the same for ours. We have excellent tutors, like your highness, to guide others on archery and swordsmanship." The butler explains and the princess’s expression changes.
"Oh. I didn't know that." Princess Minjung mumbled as she sighs.
The princess was not too excited to go to the Wang kingdom.
She prefers to stay in her kingdom and study there.
"Your highness, we have arrived." said the butler as he quickly ran out to open the car door for Princess Minjung.
She got out as her eyes widened to see the interior design of the royal house. It was all red and golden design with chinese characters written on some parts of the walls.
"I guessed that the Wang family is chinese?" Princess Minjung questioned, earning a nod from the butler as he guided the princess into the main entrance.
There were people standing at the side of the gates, knowing it was the royal generals. As both the butler and the princess entered, they bowed towards them and Princess Minjung acknowledged them with a smile.
"Princess Minjung. Welcome to Wang kingdom." a feminine voice said and the princess guessed that it was the Queen since her gown was all red and golden.
The King stood beside her with a wide smile.
"Your majesties, it is an honor to meet you." The princess bowed in respect, earning a giggle from the Queen.
"You are gorgeous in person, Princess Minjung." The Queen complimented, earning a blush from the younger princess.
"Let's continue our chat inside, princess and sir." The King invited, as Princess Minjung nodded and the maids started to assist them.
At the same time, the princess frowned a little as she quickly looked behind, analysing her surroundings.
"Princess, what's wrong?" The butler questioned and Princess Minjung looked towards him.
"I feel like someone was staring at us."
There was a reason why everyone looked up to the princess of the Jung Kingdom. She has a really good instinct.
All of the guards in her kingdom have seen her shooting arrows and had a hand to hand sword fight with them.
She was far one of the most skilled swordsmen.
Princess Minjung shakes her head as she pulls the butler along.
"Nevermind me. Let's go in! The King and Queen are waiting for us!"
Tumblr media
Prince Jackson frowned as he squinted to the opposite of the open field, to see a few generals and the King and Queen.
"What is going on there?" said Prince Jackson as he pointed towards where the generals were standing.
"Oh! The princess of Jung Kingdom came to attend classes here... But it seems that.. she is showing her skills to the King and Queen." Prince Jackson's butler said as he was trying to see what was going on.
"Skills? What ski— Woah!"
His words were cut off by the sound of swords clashing with each other. Prince Jackson's jaw widened to see how the princess was one to one with the guards.
She was the first princess that the prince saw, that basically got down and dirty to fight and also she might probably be the first princess to even know how to fight using a sword.
"Damn.." Prince Jackson muttered as he gulped.
"Are you sure she is a princess?" Prince Jackson pointed out and the butler chuckled.
"Yes she is, young prince. Her kingdom has good swords and our King and Queen mostly bought the swords from the Jung Kingdom." The butler explains and Prince Jackson nodded.
At the same time, Princess Minjung was grinning widely as she was walking in circles - eye to eye with the guards as she quickly raised her arms forwards charging towards him while quickly shoving the opponent's leg, locking him down.
"Princess! That was magnificent!" The Queen clapped in awe as Princess Minjung was catching her breath - helping the guard to stand up, bowing towards him.
The generals were in awe to see her swordsmanship and the amount of professionalism she showed when she fought with the guards.
"You should teach our guards here, young princess." The King offered and Princess Minjung smiled a little.
"I'm afraid I have to reconsider, your highness."
"I understand. You might be busy." said The King.
The princess smiled to know that she might have made friends with the King and Queen of the Wang Kingdom.
Tumblr media
"See! You even made a deal with the King and Queen!" The princess’s mother, the Queen of Jung Kingdom squealed as Princess Minjung rolled her eyes as she mounted horse.
"Make sure to listen to the butlers there! Don't be hard-headed!" Her mother nagged and Princess Minjung smiled amusingly as she just nodded.
"I'll get going, mother." Princess Minjung nods as her mother hits the back of the horse as it begins galloping its way out of the main entrance, earning a proud smile from her.
Villagers were in awe as they saw the princess and the horse sprinting its way in the middle of the pathway.
They could see her sword and her bow-arrow attached at the back, seeing the logo of the kingdom.
It took about 10 minutes to reach the Wang Kingdom, thanks to the short cut she made through the forest.
The princess whipped the horse twice as it began sprinting. The villagers shrieked as they felt a breeze as the horse went past them, earning whispers here and there, curious to whom was sprinting.
As soon as the princess saw the main entrance of the Wang Kingdom, she pulled the horse roughly to make it suddenly stop at its tracks.
Princess Minjung frowns to see multiple guards, standing in front of the gates. They don't look welcoming.
The armed princess approached one of the guards.
"Excuse me. I have to go in."
"I'm sorry, we don't accept commoners." The guard said and Princess Minjung frowns deepened.
"Excuse you. Do you know who am I?" Princess Minjung’s voice boomed and she could see the guard to flinch a little.
Feeling offended, Princess Minjung pulled the horse to the opposite direction.
"Whatever."
She was grateful that the King and Queen told her a few paths to go through the royal field. She had to cut through the back quietly, and she successfully went inside the royal field.
The horse galloped its way towards the royal house that was just in front of the field. As the princess was looking straight, her eyes turned up to see a black figure on the roof.
Princess Minjung frowned deeply as she noticed something unfamiliar. As her distance shortens, she widened her eyes to quickly grab her bow-arrow at the back, pointing towards the roof.
"Princess Minjung!"
The princess accidentally let go of the arrow as it shot to the wrong direction, at the same time her legs started to become unbalanced making her fall.
"Your highness!" She could hear a few people calling her, as she fell straight to the ground. She was lucky that her legs weren't attached to any ropes that were tied to the horse.
It would be an embarrassment for her.
"Your highness! Are you okay?!"
Princess Minjung's eyes were closed, then feeling the sunlight onto her. Her eyes slowly flickered open, to see someone staring at her.
Her eyes widened as she straight away sat up.
"You must be Princess Minjung." The man in front of him spoke and the princess glanced towards him, examining his features.
He must be the young prince.
"And you must be Prince Jackson." Princess Minjung muttered as she rubbed her back.
The prince offered a hand towards the princess, as she gladly accepted it, pulling her up.
"What are you doing here, anyway? I saw you entering our secret exit." Prince Jackson questioned and Princess Minjung frowns a little.
"Right. I was mistaken as a commoner and they don't let me in." stated the princess and the prince widened his eyes.
"That's weird. They should recognise everyone by now." Prince Jackson mumbled and the princess sighs.
"It's okay. I made it in anyway." Princess Minjung smiled a little.
Prince Jackson looked at her then towards the roof.
"Did you see something just now?" Prince Jackson questioned and the princess tilted her head.
"What do you mean?"
"I saw you shooting towards the roof. Was there something there?" questioned Prince Jackson and Princess Minjung looked at him. He looks a little concerned, making the princess to be guilty.
"I did."
Tumblr media
"So it's true." Prince Jackson said as he was pulling the grass. The princess looked at him as he pouted a little.
Both of them were sitting crossed legs on the grass, seeing guards being trained at the opposite.
"What is true?"
"There are rumors saying someone is trying to kill the King." The prince mumbled and the princess widened her eyes.
"That is impossible to even do, Prince—
"Call me Jackson."
"Eh? Excuse me?"
Prince Jackson turned towards the princess with a grin.
"We're the same age, and you are my tutor anyway." The prince winks and Princess Minjung was flustered to see him winking at her.
"R-Right. Can we get to the person who is trying to kill the King part?" the princess pointed out and Prince Jackson suddenly remembered.
"Oh yeah! Okay so.. I heard it was an insider who wanted to kill the King."
"What? So the generals?"
"It could be." Prince Jackson shrugged and Princess Minjung was already concerned.
"The King should tighten the security level."
"He did. Which is why I am trapped here. I can't go to your kingdom." answered the prince, feeling his eyes on her.
Princess Minjung looked up to meet his eyes, and somehow, she had a weird feeling on her stomach. It was like there were butterflies.
"Prince Jackson!"
Both the prince and the princess broke their eye contact as the both of them flusteredly stood up, both taking a step back.
"Your highness, it's time to go in." Prince Jackson's butler called and the princess suddenly feels disappointed.
She wanted to talk more with the young prince.
"I wish to stay." Prince Jackson muttered, but the princess could hear him clearly, feeling herself blushing.
"Your high—
"Okay! Okay! I'm coming!" The prince yelled towards the butler's direction. He turned towards the princess with a small smile.
"I hope we meet again."
Princess Minjung chuckled. "We will, Prince Jackson. I'll be out here for the whole day." the princess reassured, earning a wide smile from Prince Jackson as he bowed before leaving the princess.
What is this feeling?
Tumblr media
Days passed, which includes the princess of The Jung Kingdom and the prince of Wang Kingdom to spend more time together and the long hours that the both of them spent challenging each other with playful sword fights.
"C'mon Jackson! I didn't know that you are a soft one!"
Prince Jackson frowns, already knowing that the princess was trying to hit his nerve, seeing her smirking.
He charged towards her, and as usual, Princess Minjung managed to avoid him - making the prince to groan loudly in annoyance.
"C'mon! How did you run away so fast?!?" Prince Jackson whines, earning a chuckle from the princess.
"It's not over yet, Prince— Woah!"
Princess Minjung sadly had lowered her guard, then making Prince Jackson tackle her down.
The prince was now on top of the princess - blocking her from moving up.
The princess can't help but to gasp, seeing the prince’s face inches away.
Prince Jackson’s features was softer than the pictures that she has seen on the Royal Household of Wang Kingdom’s wall.
The painter purposedly made his pictures looked more rough - trying to potray the prince’s face intimidating but everyone knows how Prince Jackson is like.
He was just a prince that is full of love and fun.
The prince and the princess’s eyes were searching into each other.
Both of them know that there was some kind of feeling that they felt towards each other as Prince Jackson can't help but to smile a little.
"Prince Jackson!"
Both the prince and the princess looked towards the voice to see the butler running towards them - making the prince to get off from the princess then helping her to stand.
"What is it?" Prince Jackson sighs, to see the butler looking like he ran a marathon.
"Your highness! The King is being threatened!" The butler cried out, both Prince Jackson and Princess Minjung looked towards each other with widened eyes.
"T-Threatened?! By whom?!" exclaimed Princess Minjung, seeing the butler looking more afraid.
"The head of the royal guard."
At that moment, Prince Jackson walked past the butler with a deep frown on his face.
Princess Minjung on the other hand quickly took her sword and her bow-arrow following the prince behind.
But she suddenly stopped at her tracks, turning towards the butler.
"Call for backup. This time, the ones that you trust the most."
Tumblr media
They went into the royal house, making their way to the throne room when the princess pulled Prince Jackson's arm roughly to the side.
"What—
Princess Minjung covered the prince’s mouth, pointing towards the 'guards' that were standing in front of the gates.
"Let's just—
"Jackson. They are not normal guards." Princess Minjung whispered and Prince Jackson frowned - somehow confused to her words.
The princess then showed her sword.
"Your guards would carry swords that have my kingdom's symbol. They don't carry one." Princess Minjung pointed and Prince Jackson turned towards the guards as his eyes widened a little, remembering what his butler told him.
"....Her kingdom has good swords and our King and Queen mostly bought the swords from the Jung Kingdom for our guards...."
Prince Jackson looked towards the warrior princess.
"What should we do now?" whispered the prince as he turned towards her eyes - seeing a hint of bravery in her eyes.
Princess Minjung smirked a little as she took out her bow-arrow, already pointing towards the guards. She perfectly shot the 2 of them, their bodies falling with a thud.
With a cue, Prince Jackson ran towards the door as he opened the large throne door to see everyone basically in their own position.
"Stop!" Prince Jackson's voice roared through the throne room. The head of the royal guard has his sword near to the King’s neck.
Princess Minjung was already in her position to shoot everyone in the room.
"Jack—
"Don't you dare take a step, or the King will be slaughtered on his precious neck."
Princess Minjung frowns deeply to see the general basically holding the knife on the King's neck.
The Queen was being cornered while the trusted generals were being held.
"Princess, if I were you, I would put down the bow." The general's voice was challenging. The princess glanced towards the prince, to see him nearly in tears.
Her eyes then shifted towards the King as he gave a knowing look towards her, it was if he wanted her to release the bow.
Princess Minjung sighs and as she is about to lower her bow when she sees a few figures both at her sides.
She let out a huge smirk, without letting a warning as she straight up shot the arrow towards the general and the King's direction.
Loud gasps were being heard as Princess Minjung grin widely, to see the general's body fell with a thud.
At the same time, multiple guards came into the throne room.
"Princess! I called the King and Queen of Jung Kingdom for assistance!" The butler came running towards Minjung as she nodded.
Prince Jackson immediately ran towards the King, as he was staring at the body of the general.
"Father!" The prince cried out, jumping onto his arms as the King pats the younger prince's back.
Princess Minjung went towards the King as his eyes turned towards the princess with a softer look.
"Princess, how could I repay you?" The King said softly, his head bowing a little. Princess Minjung stops the King from bowing to her - shaking her hand a little.
"It is not necessary, your majesty. I treat your highness and the Queen as my own family."
The words had gone to Prince Jackson's ears as he looked towards her. As of now, his eyes were somehow focused on the princess.
It was as if everything was muted, everything that was surrounding the princess blurred. His focus was on her.
Her words even made Prince Jackson fall for her even more.

*****
The room where negotiations took place was not one you'd seen on your tour with Caspian. It was large and masculine, dark warm tones filling the space. A long wooden table sat on one side and that's where all of you were huddled over the maps.
The map was old because it showed Fareha's previous glory. You traced your finger over the letters of the name idly while you listened to Lom explained that forces had taken bits and pieces of your kingdom over the years.
"Verphin holds the east, here," Lom explained as he traced a line over the boundaries where one country had conquered the land. "Palamedis holds the south, including the poppy fields that my queen assures will need to be protected during any battles."
The poppies were part of what was needed for the the negotiations anyways. Caspian's men made their notes as Lom continued to explain the extent to which you had lost your kingdom.
"And Reiman is here," he said as he traced a line near the mountains, "here," Another line near the ocean, "and here." A final line was drawn around the land closest to your manor.
Reiman was the largest of your enemies. They had pushed to conquer your lands for as long as you could remember. They were the ones you were most worried about.
"We will need to get the lands back from Palamedis first," one of Caspian's advisers stated as he tapped the poppy fields.
You glanced at Lom and he gave you an encouraging nod. You had already discussed this part with him as well.
"We will need a confront the Reiman troops that line around the kingdom as well. The quickest route to and from the sea is through our lands and you will not be able to pass with Reiman soldiers there."
It would also give you part of your kingdom back.
The advisers to the king seemed hesitant, but Caspian met your eyes for the first time all morning.
"That will be our first mission. Then we will clear Palamedian soldiers from the land where the poppies and other medicinal herbs are located."
As simple as that. You heaved out a relieved breath and gave him a nod.
Since the accidental kiss and the ride back to Cair Paravel, you and Caspian hadn't spoken to one another. It was dreadful, but necessary. You didn't know how to talk to him without admitting that you had enjoyed the kiss.
You were here for your kingdom, not for the king.
The next few hours were spent hammering out details about the plan. Some of your men would travel to gather your army to assist in taking back your lands.
"I should probably go with them," you said quietly while Lom drew up some numbers of your men. "My men will not trust anyone other than me if we tell them that Narnia is no longer our enemy."
Caspian looked surprised at that.
"Narnia has never been your enemy. We have always considered Fareha as a neutral entity in the wars we have fought."
Your hands shook as you placed them behind you and turned to face Caspian fully.
"I find it strange that we are not enemies and yet my men have been slaughtered at the hands of Narnians on multiple occasions. Is that not why you requested my presence here? For a truce to help your Narnia."
Caspian seemed to almost stumble towards you.
"No, not… not at all. I requested you because I wanted to align Narnia with Fareha because you are untouched by the wars we have fought to claim Narnian lands back for Narnia. We do not look to conquer lands that are rightfully ruled so why would we be at war with you?"
You looked over at Lom who looked as confused as you felt.
"Our soldiers have spoken often about being faced with Narnian banners. How would it be possible that we have fought each other without it being on purpose?"
Caspian looked from you to his advisers. One held a hand up and stepped into the conversation.
"There have been times our soldiers have spoken about fighting squadrons who do not carry banners. We took them to be either Verphin or Reimani soldiers depending on the location."
You turned to Lom, a fierceness on your face.
"Why would our soldiers not carry our banners?"
Lom shook his head. There was fury under his calm face, you could see that clearly.
"I do not know, my queen, but you can bet I will find out."
You fully believed in Lom.
With that, you turned to Caspian with new eyes. This whole trip was under a new light. If what he said was true—and you believed it was—you had come to Narnia expecting nefarious intentions. Instead he only wanted an alliance to help Narnia and Fareha both.
"I believe I owe you an apology, King Caspian," you said with a bow of your head.
"No apology is necessary Queen Y/N," he said softly, his voice low so that it wouldn't carry to the nearby advisers, "and please, I requested that you just call me Caspian."
You had thought after the ill-timed kiss that perhaps your friendliness would be dissolved. It would appear not.
"Of course. Caspian. Thank you "
His hand twitched upwards as if he wanted to reach out, but instead he let both hands fall to his sides.
"We will discover what went on, but I will make it known that all Fareha soldiers are our allies. Whatever caused the miscommunication before will be addressed." Then, as he stepped in closer to you, he lowered his voice. "My greatest sympathies and regret to the loss of your men by the hand of Narnians."
Although he had withheld from touching you, you reached out to grab his wrist.
"Thank you Caspian," you offered softly.
He turned his hand in your grasp to squeeze your hand.
"Of course Y/N."
Perhaps that mistaken kiss would not stand in the way of your alliance with Narnia.
------
You traced your finger over the map that outlined just how small Fareha had become. What once was a grand kingdom was now a small chunk near the ocean with war on all sides.
Your parents would be saddened to hear how you had lost most of their beautiful kingdom. And for what? Narnia was an ally, not an enemy, so all of these years had been wasted hating something you didn’t know.
“You will see it restored to former glory,” a soft voice said from your side.
The surprise of someone being in the room with you was lost under the shock that Caspian was standing just a few inches away from you. He gave you a gentle smile as he looked back down to the map. His fingers traced the path that yours had taken, over the hills and valleys of what used to be your lands.
“It won’t be done overnight and it will require sacrifice, but Fareha will become what it once was.”
You felt your heart thud painfully in your chest. It was too much for you to handle—him being so kind to you, standing so close to you. For the first time you wished you could throw away your crown and just be yourself, but you did not have that luxury. Instead you straightened your spine and met his eyes.
“I need to apologize for my reaction to the kiss. I know… I know that you were just grateful to me for agreeing to help Narnia and that it was an accident. I shouldn’t have been so abrupt in my reaction at being taken by surprise.”
The look on Caspian’s face made you worry that you had said the wrong thing. It was there and gone in a flicker of expression—from confusion to frustration and then to acceptance in the blink of an eye.
He reached out for your hand, his fingers folding around yours as if it was something he had done a hundred times before.
“It wasn’t an accident. Y/N,” he breathed as if he had been holding it in, his eyes softening as they roamed over your face, “can you tell me that you don’t feel this? This thing between the two of us?”
Of course you did. It felt like a physical presence that tied the two of you together, drawn to each other from the moment you had stepped foot on Narnian soil. But there was no way that you could tell him that.
Never had the weight of your crown felt so heavy.
“Caspian,” you began, but your words were drowned out by the sound of someone calling for the king.
A soldier came bursting into the room, not noticing or caring that the two of you were too close to be appropriate. He ran over to stand in front of you, bowing as an after-thought as he explained himself.
“There’s an army riding towards Cair Paravel, my king. They hoist Reimani colors.”
The Reiman forces would not be riding to Cair Paravel for a pleasant meeting. The two of them were not particularly at war unless they clashed over land. That could only mean one thing.
“They are here for me. Either because they know I’m here and unprotected or because they fear Fareha coming to an alliance with Narnia.” Your heart thundered in your chest as you looked at Caspian. “I will have to ride out to meet them. It will be the only way to spare Narnia a show of force from their army.”
Caspian grabbed your hand once more before you could even begin to leave.
“No. You will go up to the north tower; it is well defended so no soldier will come for you. I will ride out with Narnian forces as well as Lom and your men. If the Reiman forces are here for you, they will be disappointed.”
You shook your head but Caspian was already pulling you away from the table and towards a back door of the room which would lead to the main part of the castle once more.
“I will not run and hide. I’m a queen; I will not bow at their feet.”
A hand came up to cup your cheek, holding you still so that Caspian could meet your eyes once more.
“This is not about running and hiding. This is strategy. You are a queen, but you are a guest here in Narnia. It is my duty as king to see to your safety and well-being, as an ally and a friend. And,” he whispered as his hand slipped down so that it was resting against the side of your neck, “because if something happened to you, it would destroy me.”
The world had somehow slipped sideways with those words. You couldn’t help but lean into the touch, but your mouth refused to cooperate with you.
He barely knew you. He couldn’t possibly mean it. That type of sentiment came after years of courting and falling in love; it didn’t happen over the course of a few days, right?
“Go to the tower. I will have Lom with me to question whoever is in charge and find out their business in Narnia. Do not open the tower for anyone except me or Lom, do you understand?”
It was impossible to do anything more than nod. You were still in shock from his declaration. Was it a declaration?
Caspian leaned in and pressed his forehead to yours before he released you and headed back into the room with the table and the maps. You knew he would gather his men and his sword before he’d ride out to face the Reiman forces.
If something happened to him… you couldn’t help but think that it might destroy you as well.
Perhaps he could mean those words. It was a surprise to you but you didn’t think it was wrong. In fact it felt more right than anything had in a long time.
As you made your way towards the north tower, you hesitated in front of one long hallway. Caspian had told you to go to the tower and wait for him or Lom, but you couldn’t help but think of Lady Eloise alone in her room. If Cair Paravel was breached, she would be undefended.
That wouldn’t do.
You turned down the hallway and ran, your dress hiked up to free up the movement. Her bedroom door was open and you rushed in, looking around for the girl.
Eloise came out of a room that had a large fountain, her hands and the hem of her dress wet. She started to smile at you until she saw the look on your face.
“What is it?”
You went to her and wrapped your arm around her shoulders.
“There are Reimani soldiers headed this way. Caspian, his soldiers, and my men have gone out to meet them. Caspian wants us in the north tower for our safety.”
You could feel the girl shake in your arms as you guided her at a faster pace down the hallway. Eloise held on to your hand as the two of you made your way through the unfamiliar halls until you came to the recognizable north tower. The guard there recognized you and after you explained the situation, he let you and Eloise in.
Up a winding staircase was a large room that looked to be reinforced. You felt safer the moment the door shut, but that still left you to the knowledge that Caspian and Lom, your men and Narnians alike, were all facing the Reimani soldiers at this moment.
It wouldn’t be their entire force. Reiman was a large kingdom, multiple countries piled together to create the whole of it. They could have hundreds of men here in Narnia and still have thousands back in what used to be Fareha.
Caspian wouldn’t have an entire army here in the castle. There were some in the soldiers quarters, you had seen that, but not nearly enough to fight an army. And Reimani forces fought fiercely.
You tried to keep Eloise distracted with tales of your travels and stories of being a queen, but you couldn’t distract yourself. It would seem that you had come to Narnia to face your enemy, but not the one you had imagined.
With one hand wrapped around the pendant that gave you strength and your other hand tucked with Eloise’s while you told her about pushing your brother into the stream as a young girl, you couldn’t help but pray out to whichever god was listening that the men would be alright.
That Caspian would be safe.
A post for voting will be up after this.

Wow. Tomoko Kanemaki SUCKS!
I decided to be masochistic and read back through the KH2 novels by Tomoko Kanemaki. And I just have to say: that there are actually people out there who like her writing and consider it to be in as good or superior to the games astounds me. These books are awful.
When they just straight-up adapt the game to text like the KH novels and the COM novels (except for the R/R one, but R/R sucks anyway), it’s fine. They even do the visits to Land of Dragons, Beast’s Castle and Olympus Coliseum better than the KH2 manga does, plus swaps in Agrabah for the far more important Port Royal. But that’s the only good thing I can say about them. In literally every other regard, the game and manga are infinitely superior.
The main problem is simple to sum up: Kanemaki is a fanfic writer. A pretty stereotypical KH fangirl. This in of itself wouldn’t be a problem if she weren’t adapting the games, but she is, and when she combines the game adaptations with her own fanfic based on what she wants to see, there is inevitably going to be a clash between them. The story written by Kazushige Nojima that she is adapting to novel form does not gel at all with what she writes, and as a result she has to either change that story (to the detriment of both it and its characters) or she neglects to change it even when it directly contradicts her own writing. This happens so much that it really makes for an excruciating reading experience. So let me list all of my problems with these novels point by point, to clarify just why Kanemaki’s writing fails so hard.
- I’ll get the biggest one out of the way right off the bat: Kanemaki is obsessed - and I mean obsessed - with the existential plight of the Nobodies, which includes the Draco in Leather Pants treatment to Organization XIII (”Is it really wrong to seek what you’ve lost?” is asked at one point, as though it’s a profound question. Um, when you’re doing so by inflicting that exact same loss upon millions of innocent people, yes it is!) The worst part is that characters (usually Namine, but Axel, Riku, Saix, Xemnas and even Ansem the Wise get on it at some points) are constantly repeating the exact same angsty inner monologues and internal (and sometime external) quasi-philosophical debates about Nobodies. I’m not kidding, it’s usually word-for-word. “Is it right for Nobodies to exist?” “Nobodies have nowhere to go or call home”. “Do Nobodies really lack hearts?” “What defines a heart?” “If Nobodies don’t have hearts, then why do they feel such-and-such?” “Why were Nobodies even born?” “Nobodies aren’t meant to exist, but does that still mean...?” And so on and so on, blah, blah, BLAH. Hearing this over and over and over and OVER again throughout my reading of the novels doesn’t make me more sympathetic of the Nobodies, it actually makes me less sympathetic and want them to go away so I don’t have to keep reading the same damn woe-is-me grade school-level existentialism! I want to keep reading about Sora, Donald and Goofy, damn it!
- Three characters who were mostly on the sidelines in KH2 somehow get a majority of time and focus here: Riku, Axel and Namine. They are even forced into an apocryphal trio together. They are basically treated as the de-facto secondary main characters next to Sora, Donald and Goofy, with their actions and development being given equal importance. Actually, that’s a lie - Riku, Axel and Namine are honestly given more importance. There is so much wrong about this - not only does the trio not feel organic and reek of bad fanfic, but each character in it isn’t well portrayed at all compared to the game or even the manga.
- Riku had the most potential, since he’s always a major character and a more talented writer could’ve come up with more feasible things for him to have been doing off-screen during KH2. But what Kanemaki has him do is ridiculous. If it’s not just stalking Sora, Donald and Goofy as a silent protector (which is the least interesting thing you could do with him), it’s bullshit with Axel and Namine, or fighting Saix midway through even though Kanemaki still keeps Saix’s later line of “Didn’t Roxas take care of you?”, or having him fight Xemnas in the Old Mansion only for Ansem the Wise to show up and Xemnas then just...retreat for no reason, letting Ansem live and thus ensuring the later destruction of his Kingdom Hearts like a dumbass!  And through all of this, she frequently makes Riku default back into snarky, arrogant asshole mode, which doesn’t fit his character at this point at all. Also, while I saw no deliberate yaoi bait in the writing of the KH2 game, it’s definitely present in these novels.
- Axel. Oh my God. Anyone who hates what was done with him as Lea in the games, you should blame Kanemaki, since she actually ran with that kind of writing and characterization for him in these novels long before that happened in the games. He is treated as a totally trustworthy good guy who is a great friend to Roxas, Riku and Namine. The one dick move Kanemaki has him make is quickly backtracked on and then swept under the rug. His whole villainous role is whitewashed at every turn, from both what he intended with Roxas (legit deciding to kill him is changed to attempting a murder/suicide so that he can die with his best friend) to everything concerning Kairi (no, he didn’t kidnap her at all, that point is hammered in frequently, he was going to take her to Namine and they’d then see Sora together! And he didn’t want to turn Sora into a Heartless, that was a wrongful assumption on Saix’s part! And Saix summoned those Dusks on Destiny Islands, not Axel! Axel is chivalrous and heroic and does everything possible to protect and save Kairi! Gag me.) It’s so obnoxious, and beyond removing all of the character’s edge, it’s a blatant case of giving a character a major role in a story that they aren’t supposed to have one in just because he’s a favorite of the writer.
- Namine is an equally blatant case of this, but her case might be even worse. Not only is she THE source of the repetitive woe-is-me existential Nobody monologues and debates, with her whole character arc being changed to revolve around this which honestly makes her unintentionally unsympathetic and annoying, but this portrayal of her has a negative effect on her in both fandom and canon. In terms of fandom, a cult of bad apples (usually yaoi fangirls who already hated Kairi) arose around Namine following KH2, declaring her as superior to Kairi in every way and worthy of being the real main heroine of the KH series. Not only is this false, but it arguably got started because of these novels (translations of which had made their way online long before they were localized), where a character who literally only got 10 minutes of screentime in the game literally gets transformed into the main heroine and one of the most frequently appearing characters in general, even if her “character development” is horribly written and amounts to her being a mouthpiece for Kanemaki’s views. Then again, maybe they just projected onto Namine due to her introverted, fond-of-drawing nature, and Kanemaki was just one of them and thus produced something that kept them going. It’s a Chicken/Egg type of thing, I guess. But whatever the case, what it did in canon was worse. Kanemaki was the first to write for Namine after KH2, in 358/2 Days, and her characterization of her translated in game form to the stagnant caricatured plot device that Nomura then realized was easy to write for and convenient for making other convoluted plot turns happen.
- Come to think of it, Kanemaki’s partnering up with Nomura for Days probably did a lot more harm than just with Namine. Because her obsession with the “What Measure is a Non-Human?” trope never truly leaves the series after Days. It doesn’t pop up in BBS, since that was being worked on before Days, but everything afterwards is sure to feature it in some abysmal way or another, whether it be Nobodies, replicas, data copies or beings of pure darkness. The “Nobodies have hearts after all” comes straight from her writing (even if she had it as a needless overcomplication of the original idea that strong hearts can share feelings with those without it and thus serve as a heart for them too, while Nomura’s retcon is just “Nah, the body can regrow a heart, Xemnas lied”.) A lot of KH3′s worst writing might have not existed had Nomura not picked up on Kanemaki’s fixation with woobified “non-beings”.
- Sora honestly feels like an afterthought for Kanemaki. She’s so eager to write new fanficcy material for other characters, but not for the actual main protagonist, who only gets straight-up game adaptation. Oh, except that some of his lines that were “mean” to the Nobodies (and thus “OOC”, as both KH2-hating anon and Kanemaki seem to think) are changed or cut out.
- Y’know how the KH2 manga made Kairi even better than her game portrayal? Yeah, well this novel makes her far worse. First off, her defiant “you’re not acting very friendly!” to Axel is cut because Axel is whitewashed in that moment (he even readies himself to defend Kairi from the Dusks which Saix summons). Later, she does not get away from Axel because he was never kidnapping her to begin with here. She then realizes that he’s really a good person before Saix kidnaps her, with Axel desperately trying to protect her. She then only shows up toward the end when Axel once again comes to be her hero (again thwarted by that dastardly Saix), with her moping about how she can do nothing to help the brave, noble Axel. (I feel sick just typing this...) In the finale, not only does Kanemaki not take advantage of the potential Kairi development that the game relegated to optional text boxes, but she actually destroys Kairi’s entire arc long before BBS did by making one of her few additions to Kairi be an inner monologue she has on the shore of Destiny Islands alongside Mickey, Donald and Goofy just before Sora and Riku make it back, where she’s just wishing with all her heart that they’ll come back because “We’re here waiting for you. We’ll always wait for you.” BULL-FUCKING-SHIT. Kanemaki, just like Nomura and Oka, clearly has no interest in Kairi as a character on her own. She is used here as a plot device for the character development of Axel and Namine, characters she is interested in, even though Kairi had more significance and screentime than them by far in the actual KH2 game. Geez, even Nojima tried with her!
- Roxas is written just fine during the prologue, since his scenes are just lifted from the game. But when he resurfaces in the final novel, added material make Axel be the most important thing on his mind. Even his final thoughts as he makes the full merging with Sora is that he hopes to meet Axel again. More deliberate yaoi-baiting, and more shoving Axel down our throats. Hell, that last novel is even named “Anthem - Meet Again / Axel Last Stand”. God damn it, Kanemaki, Axel was not important to KH2. It’s not his story. Get over it already!
- Hey, remember how in the game DiZ/ Ansem the Wise did a total character 180 due to offscreen reasons when he came back after the prologue? That was dumb. The novels add new scenes for him, so Kanemaki could actually rectify this issue....OR she just repeats it, since the first new scene she gives him also has him in 180 mode due to offscreen reasons!
- Xemnas and Saix both have their levels of menace neutered thanks to the existential angst of the Nobodies affecting them too, with none of their inner monologues bemoaning their fates really adding up with their actions. The game let you make up your own mind as to whether you found them sympathetic despite their monstrous behavior, but Kanemaki is clearly trying to force the sympathy angle, and it really lessens them, especially Xemnas.
- Really, only Xigbar, Xaldin, Demyx, Luxord, and the trio of Hayner, Pence and Olette were written completely accurately out of the KH-original cast. Nothing felt out of place with them.
- Other nonsensical fanficcy events besides what I’ve already mentioned include bringing stuff from COM (like Repliku) back up frequently instead of keeping focus on the story at hand, a totally different version of how Namine and Axel split from Riku following the prologue (one that continues making Namine unintentionally unsympathetic), Riku having Mickey make the promise after the prologue before Kanemaki’s own 358/2 Days retcons this to happening before it, Riku meeting with Maleficent in Hollow Bastion, Mickey meeting with Axel in Hollow Bastion, Axel being the one to wake Goofy up after his “death”, Axel having a sort of odd friendship with Pluto, Ansem the Wise being the one to provide the box of clues for Riku to give, Axel pretending to betray Riku and Namine so that he gets let back into the Organization and thus be able to rescue Kairi, meetings between the Organization where they talk about totally different and less interesting matters than they did in the game, and having Namine stalk the group throughout the finale as she thinks her last pretentious inner monologues. Also, given its subject matter and how it plays during Days’ opening, I swear to God that Kanemaki created the Axel/Roxas ghost scene that Nomura added to KH2:FM. That it shows up in the last novel, word-for-word, a month before KH2:FM’s release, proves this.
- The misplacement of Disney Castle. This one REALLY bothers me. She places Disney Castle between Beast’s Castle and Port Royal in the third novel. This makes no sense whatsoever, since not only was this meant to be Maleficent’s re-introduction to Sora, Donald and Goofy, but now it comes after Maleficent already made an alliance with Sora and his friends at Hollow Bastion! And then all of a sudden, she’s no longer keeping the Nobodies at bay and is back to self-interested villainy! And there isn’t any dialogue explaining this away or anything!  We still have Maleficent saying “If it isn't the wretched Keyblade holder and his pitiful lackeys!” as if she hadn’t agreed to temporarily join forces with said wretched Keyblade holder and his pitiful lackeys! Way to ruin one of the best Disney world visits, Kanemaki!
- The whole finale and especially the ending itself, which were so powerful in both the game and even the manga, has no power in the light novel style of writing Kanemaki uses. Part of that isn’t Kanemaki’s fault, since so much of the finale’s greatness is visual and that obviously can’t be recaptured in text form. And yet she still makes some baffling pacing decisions, with stuff like the aforementioned Namine stalking passages throwing the whole thing off, LOL moments such as Riku himself outright admitting that he has no idea where he got Kairi’s Keyblade also breaking the immersion, character alterations like to Xemnas and Kairi ruining the effectiveness of things they do, and a truly WTF-inducing final chapter where the entire Secret Ansem Report is put before a novelization of both the credits scene where Sora sees Kairi’s drawing in the Secret Place and the epilogue scene where they get the King’s letter.
Overall, these novels just don’t feel like Kingdom Hearts II to me. Even the KH2 manga, the middle of its first half notwithstanding, felt like it. This does not. And that’s because whatever the faults in its narrative, KH2′s story was first and foremost a fun Disney/Square crossover adventure starring Sora, Donald and Goofy, with angsty existentialism merely being one of its themes and meant more for players to think about and discuss rather than the characters. The novels tell a story about angsty existentialism starring characters who think about and discuss it, with Sora, Donald and Goofy’s adventures being a passionless afterthought. That there are people who honestly think that Kanemaki doing this “fleshes out the characters” is shameful. Constant angst and grade school-level philosophical circle-jerking is not character depth. It is pretension of depth, hence the word “pretentious” which fits perfectly here. It takes a lot more than talking and expressing feelings at length to constitute character development. It requires meaningful actions, and it requires some form of growth and change. Kanemaki’s characters are largely static, simplistically characterized beings who spin their wheels in terms of both actions and growth. Riku does not change: you can barely tell he has any kind of depression or has experienced any kind of humbling. Axel does not change: he’s a great guy from the start and has no internal problems to overcome, only the external one of being separated from Roxas. Namine does not change, she goes through the same questioning and angsting over her existence and the existence of other Nobodies until the last minute where the answer just suddenly comes to her (in fact, it was apparently in her all along and she just forgot it. Shades of Sora’s dumbass “Power of Waking” arc in KH3 here...)  Any actual development that happens with some characters (like Ansem the Wise) comes straight from the game...and Nojima didn’t write that all too well either!  There is just very little that’s enjoyable about the KH2 novels to me, and Tomoko Kanemaki’s writing is to blame for that.
In the words of Lemony Snicket: I highly advise you to not read these books.

Questions and form made by @goddess-of-war-nyka
1. Introduce your summoner. –
Name: Caitlin Age: 25 Height: 5′5″ Weight: 160lbs Sexuality: Bisexual Eye Color: Dark brown, nearly black Hair Color: Red Nationality: American Hobbies: Singing, drawing, playing guitar
Caitlin is from the Midwest, in the Chicago area. She lives in an apartment nearby her family, which consists of her mom, dad, her older sister, younger sister, and her younger brother. She has a shiba inu named Chiyo! Her family is extremely important to her, they’re all really tight. While in Askr, she misses them terribly.
Her life is good, but…ultimately, boring. She went to college and graduated, but hasn’t done anything with her degree. Her day job is boring and unfulfilling, and generally she feels like she’s stuck in a rut where she just sort of…exists. She suffers from anxiety and depression, and that’s greatly affecting her motivation. If it weren’t for her side job, she’d probably be really depressed. In her downtime, she performs as a Disney Princess for birthday parties! The characters she plays includes Rapunzel, Elsa, Anna, and Aurora. She takes this job very seriously, and it actually is a primary source of income for her. She gets hired a lot, but it’s still not quite what she wants to be doing with her life. Sometimes she’ll fill in as a guitarist in her friend’s band when they need the help.
2. How did they come to Askr?
She was heading to a show when she was summoned to Askr. She was in her car schlepping a lot of their equipment and all of it ended up in Askr with her, along with her car, her laptop, phone, some spare clothes, makeup, and all of her costumes. She has a fair amount of things from her world on hand, which Heroes like to play with… her car especially. Unfortunately it broke on the way over, so it would have to be fixed if anyone wanted to actually drive it.
3. What are their favourite hobbies? –
She enjoys playing music! She’s a talented guitar player and can play a fair few instruments at a basic level. Probably took some piano lessons at school or something. She sings too, but it far to shy to sing for the heroes so that’s more of a secret talent unless you’re a peeping tom and spy on her in the baths.
Drawing is a hobby, she enjoys doodling to relieve stress. Drawing practice always took a back seat to music, though, so she’s not like... super good at it, but it’s something she enjoys. She probably has a notebook she carries around that she doodles in. The Morgans are convinced it’s full of strategy secrets and try to steal it, but in reality it’s like... silly pictures of cats in socks.
4. Does your summoner have any bad habits that the heroes try to help them through? –
Confidence issues for sure. This seems to be a common theme among Summoners, and she’s really no different. She thinks the heroes are all amazing, wonderful people and that she simply pales in comparison. Her powers are a blessing from the Breidablik, so the praise she gets as the Summoner makes her feel like a liar. They’re praising Kiran, not her, she feels.
She really beats herself up inside when a plan fails.
Also frets over whether or not heroes actually like her, or if they’re just influenced by their contract.
Low key feels ugly in comparison to the other women, keeps that to herself though.
5. How close is your summoner to their heroes? –
Very close I’d say. As much as she worries, she takes her job as the Summoner seriously and does her best to take care of everyone. Besides, most of the heroes are such likable people it would be hard not to make friends!! She loves everyone dearly.
6. Does your summoner struggle with being a tactician? –
Nah, the Breidablik grants her powers that make her a great tactician.
The Breidablik houses the spirit of a Valkyrie, a legendary entity who chooses who lives and who dies on the battlefield. This spirit, known as Kiran, was a divine blessing bestowed upon Askr long ago by the Gods to protect the kingdom. The Breidablik itself was given to a legendary hero, the only person who can wield it. Kiran resides within the Breidablik and gives it and the Hero their powers. Caitlin is a reincarnation of this hero who was summoned to Askr in its time of need. The Breidablik’s powers include:
Summoning Heroes.
Sight - the ability to see the battlefield and form strategy.
Command - the ability to bend Heroes to their will.
Valkyrie Drive - Caitlin gets possessed by the Valkyrie spirit, and is given a short burst of incredible strength and magic. However, the Summoner needs to recover for a while afterwards.
Still working on the fine details with this so yeah lmao--
7. How did your summoner react during their first time summoning? –
“WHAT THE FU-”
Panic for sure.
What the fuck is happening? Where am I? You want me to do what now? What? WHAT???? She calms down eventually, but being plucked from your world and then being told to do stuff and then FIGHT is scary as fuck imo and she’s absolutely overwhelmed for a bit.
8. How does your summoner react to summoning now? –
“Man, I have to summon now... ugh, it makes me so tired, do I have to...??”
9. How well do they adjust to life in Askr? –
Pretty well, the Order is helpful and eager to make her feel welcome and comfortable.
10. How long have they been a summoner? –
Since the beginning of the game...? LMAO- Uhh, idk she’s summoned when Anna summons in game, so she’s not brought in at any special time.
11. Who’s your summoner’s main team? –
Grima, Robin, Alfonse, Veronica.
12. Who’s your summoner’s S support? –
Alfonse hehe...
13. How was your Summoner and ally support building to S support?–
HONESTLY she doesn’t get with Alfonse so it must just be like.... a strong... bond of friendship....??? I have given this 0 thought lmao sorry--
14. How many allies have s support with your summoner? –
Grima obviously heheheheheeh-- that’s like the “canon” pair, but there’s also potential for Alfonse and Bruno... probably as a poly because Bruno and Alfonse are cute as FUCK together djskldjals
But then again I have Grima supported with Alfonse so Cait/Grima/Alfonse COULD be a thing......... god dude idk I’m just thirsty af yall know me.
15. What are your top 4 ally x ally supports? –
16. What does your summoner miss from home? – THE INTERNET would make it SO MUCH EASIER to look up all of the heroes’ backstories and searching for Askran/Nordic mythology homygod.
17. If they could bring one thing from home with them what would it be? – T h e I n t e r n e t.
18. Is your summoner’s robe unique? –
Tumblr media
19. Who are your fellow summoner friends? –
@terra-haven‘s Sapphire, @vince-prime‘s Kuma, @lunalove25‘s Luna, among others hehe
20. What does your summoner wear if during their down time? –
UHHHH comfy stuff. Probably walks around in minimal clothing LMAO-- Long shirts/sweaters, after a while she’s forced to wear leggings underneath. She has a more high matenance wardrobe back home, but in Askr comfort is king.
21. How do they handle merging heroes or sending them home? –
Idk, in Cait’s storyverse I don’t think merging and sending people home would really be a thing...? Not sure how I wanna go about handling this tbh??? I think if she were to get dupes, it would just end up being a failed summon or something. Or maybe it would manifest as a item that powers up certain heroes. I think she could send heroes home but.... idk, the hero would have to consent.
22. What abilities/weapons do they have? –
When in Valkyrie mode the Breidablik turns into a lance, but otherwise nothing out of the ordinary for a Summoner.
23. Would your summoner like to know magic? –
Summoning is totally a type of magic, so I think that Summoners in general have an innate talent for magic and can learn it. Caitlin would totally be interested, magic is dope as fuuuuuck.
24. Are they able to hold their own in a fight? –
LMAO nah, not really. She tries and gets lucky, but that luck comes from summoner valkyrie powers lmao-
25. How many heroes have you acquired?  I’m too lazy to open the app and check lmao sorryyy
26. What book has been the hardest? Emotional or battle-wise. –
Book 3 has me fucking shook fam.
27. If your summoner went into battle what would be there class? –
Singer for sure.
28. Are there any heroes they clash with? –
Honestly??? Nah, she’s not super interested in actively fighting with anyone I don’t think.I mean I think there’s the obvious heroes no one really LOVES but I think Cait is the type to find them all amusing in their own way. Looooves to mess with Narcian. Valter’s just creepy but in almost a sort of entertaining way, especially since she’s in charge and he can’t actually do anything to her.
I love Berkut but I can see Cait being very eager to put him in his place.
29. Which hero have you pumped more into? –
Grima, Alfonse.
30. Which hero do you get a lot of while summoning? –
Not sure, don’t really pay that much attention.
31. Which heroes have they adopted? –

Targ Restoration Rant (aka I made the mistake of venturing into the pro -Targaryen tag & discourse)
"You know nothing, Jon Snow. A true man steals a woman from afar, t'strengthen the clan. Women who bed brothers or fathers or clan kin offend the gods, and are cursed with weak and sickly children. Even monsters." --- Ygritte, ASOS
Clearly, GRRM has never painted Cersei x Jaime or Craster x his daughters in a very favourable light. But suddenly, incest between the 2 good and heroic guys (though the jury is still out on Daenerys) of the story is a-ok? Is it because they are a couple of magic übermenschen and are thus above morality and law of nature? Am I supposed to think GRRM now advocates for incest? But only under certain conditions, only when it involves the special and God-like Targaryens? Why do fans suddenly rejoice about this and wish for a Targ restoration? What kind of fresh hell has this fandom turned into?
[Cut for length]
Their main argument seems to be
Jon and Dany are nephew/aunt which is not considered incest in Westeros so it's all good! No one would bat an eye because even outside the Targs, there are cases of avunculate marriages.
And then they bring up the two known cases; Jonnel x Sansa Stark and Edric x Serena Stark. The former was (probably) a purely political union without issue. The latter did yield heirs but Serena was the daughter of Edric's half brother, so they weren't as closely related (same goes for Sansa, who was Serena's sister and Jonnel's half brother's daughter). Both probably happened for political/practical reasons and to solve major succession issues as Rickon Stark & Jeyne Manderly had two daughters but no male heir.
This comparison is not a very pertinent one because a marriage between Jon & Daenerys would be neither purely political nor practical as they are already involved and supposedly in love. Additionally, what kind of political gain would there be for either of them if we assume Jon's true parentage will be revealed publicly, combined with his ostensible betrayal of bending the knee and falling for a "foreign whore woman" (from the Northern lords' viewpoint), resulting in the loss of his already tenuous hold over the North or the election of another KitN or QitN? Over the last few seasons, the show dropped numerous anvil sized hints about how unwelcome foreign leaders are in the North, especially Targaryens. The Northern lords were already ready to unname Jon because they deemed he'd been away too long. It makes little sense that a Jon x Daenerys marriage would placate them post R+L=J unless they inexplicably decide to suddenly support what would essentially be the restoration of a dynasty they despise. It would also mean R+L=J and Jon's actions in season 7 (i.e bending the knee to a Targaryen, consorting with said Targaryen while being a secret Targaryen himself) would have little to no long-lasting effect and any conflict it caused would be resolved by a marriage that would have happened anyway if Jon had remained Ned's natural son.
Jon wouldn't need Daenerys if he decides to pursue the Iron Throne since his claim trumps hers. What's more, the people of Westeros are more likely to accept him as king of the 7 kingdoms over Daenerys given his Stark blood and the fact that he was raised and groomed for leadership in Westeros. He could potentially have the loyalty and allegiance of the Starks and their bannermen, the Wildlings, the Reach (through Sam), the Iron Islands (through Theon), the Vale (through Sansa and Sweetrobin) and possibly the Riverlands (through his Stark cousins' Tully heritage), in contrast to Dany whose sole remaining Westerosi ally is Jon. If they were to support a Targaryen candidate for the Iron Throne, I think they would favour Jon alone (or you know, married to someone who isn't a Targaryen conqueror).
And while Daenerys could absorb Jon's claim (and potential allies- though again, why would they support Jon x Daenerys over Jon on his own?) and make hers stronger by marrying him, she doesn't need him to lay claim to the 7 kingdoms either, what with her dragons and huge armies. Moreover, an "alliance" - if you can call giving up your kingdom as such - already exists with Jon seemingly having pledged himself to her and Daenerys naming him Warden of the North. She would have been better off marrying someone else to extend or strengthen her control over other regions and territories if there weren't so few candidates left on the show. The most logical way to strike an alliance would have been to marry Jon while he was KitN, pre parentage reveal, but for some obscure reason, the show completely bypassed this option.
But R+L=J turns everything upside down and Jon, once revealed as a trueborn Targaryen, would need to marry into a Northern house if he wants to keep/take back his kingship of the North. Marrying Daenerys would only strengthen his ties to the South and house Targaryen, which would be counterproductive and work against the desired outcome- uniting North & South or two major Houses.
In short, neither party would truly benefit politically from a marriage if Jon's parentage is made public and/or he ultimately loses the North, which is very likely. This is particularly true for Jon. Only Daenerys could somewhat profit from a political union but it would be at the risk of becoming Jon's queen consort in practice if not on paper (something I doubt she would accept) and, more importantly, it would be opening a whole can of worms given the stigma of Targaryen x Targaryen unions.
Because no matter of how (un)common and (un)acceptable avunculate marriages are in the universe of Westeros, Targ restoration fans usually ignore the fact that it wouldn't be just any nephew/aunt, it would be a full Targaryen union, which would have wholly different connotations for the people of Westeros given the fairly recent trauma of their reign. A reign that ended with a mad king whose madness is believed to be hereditary and blamed on generations of close interbreeding. I doubt the people of Westeros would readily accept a Targ power couple back at the helm if they have any say in it.
Plus, Daenerys' first impression didn't exactly help matters: a Targaryen conqueror with huge armies and grown dragons in tow who roasted a father and a son of a prominent House alive and destroyed the last harvest of the Reach in the beginning of winter and unwittingly handed over the greatest weapon of all times to their greatest enemy of all times and indirectly caused the Wall to fall and wants to marry her only other living Targaryen relative, of all people? The sense of déjà vu would be pretty disconcerting, to say the least.
These Pro-Targ fans also tend to dismiss the fact Jon & Daenerys are genetically closer to full siblings than aunts/nephews by claiming modern notions such as DNA conveniently have no bearing in a medieval-fantasy setting such as ASOIAF. In other words, people in-universe wouldn't realise or be bothered that Jon & Daenerys are more closely related (44-47%) than typical nephew/aunt (25%). I think they must have an inkling of the notion and dangers of consanguinity, however basic it may be, if cousin marriages are considered quite normal for the highborn while anything involving more closely related people is frowned upon or downright forbidden. As mentioned previously, even the two known cases of avunculate unions were between uncles and their half nieces, their degree of consanguinity being thus less than that of full uncle/niece and comparable to first cousins (12,5%). So people could at least vaguely understand that Jon & Daenerys share a higher degree of consanguinity than their relatedness would suggest.
All this begs the question; if GRRM wants the restoration of this dynasty and wants us to perceive this as a positive development, wouldn't he aim to improve it and stop the perpetuation of the very proclivity that precipitated their downfall and was at the root of so much suffering in Westeros? Would he "reward" an incestuous and destructive house by having it win out while others are extinct/on the brink of extinction?
If there is supposed to be a Targaryen reinstatement, there has to be a clean break from this dynasty's nefarious characteristics and habits i.e. imperialism, tyranny and incest. What would otherwise be the narrative point of Robert's (very justifiable) Rebellion and everything that unfolded in its aftermath? There should be some kind of progress. Jon & Daenerys, if they decide to take back the IT and get married after the R+L=J reveal, would mean regression. It would be synonymous with more incest, more super inbred and possibly cray-cray Targ heirs and more political (and genetic) isolationism. And with 2 grown dragons/WoMD (if they survive), their reign would equal more subjugation, intimidation and fear for the people of Westeros, even if Jon & Daenerys' initial intentions would be to create a new and better world. In other words, a repeat of everything that was toxic and problematic about the Targaryen dynasty. This scenario seems particularly unlikely when you take the author's personal anti-war/WoMD stance into account.
And lastly, this is what GRRM said about Targcest:
"The Targaryens have heavily interbred, like the Ptolemys of Egypt. As any horse or dog breeder can tell you, interbreeding accentuates both flaws and virtues, and pushes a lineage toward the extremes."
ASOIAF is a meditation on war, power and corruption but it's also a story about extremes --- wights/WW/Ice vs Fire/Daenerys/dragons, the inevitable clash and destruction they bring about and the importance of seeking balance, moderation and finding a middle ground in all things: justice instead of vengeance, sovereignty instead of oppression etc. Even Jon himself is the embodiment of the metaphorical balance between ice and fire. As such, the Targaryens/Targcest can be viewed as another extreme to be avoided. It's the antithesis of "balanced". What he says about accentuating both flaws and virtues is evocative of this famous passage:
"King Jaehaerys once told me that madness and greatness are two sides of the same coin. Every time a new Targaryen is born, he said, the gods toss the coin in the air and the world holds its breath to see how it will land."
Some Targaryen fans like to think what the coin metaphor refers to is nothing but a myth but I would think the fact the author alludes to it in the above quote kind of refutes this theory. I also happen to think Jon & Daenerys each represent one facet of the coin. This analogy also effectively illustrates how unstable and inconsistent Targaryen rule truly was and could be again. Even if Jon & Daenerys end up being fair and progressive monarchs, what of their inbred children? On which side will the coin land for them? If there is anything Westeros needs after years of war waging, power struggles, political instability and the probably disastrous aftermath of the battle against the Others, it's consistency and stability.
Furthermore, the fact GRRM compares them to the Ptolemaic dynasty is not exactly a ringing endorsement. The Ptolemys were originally from Macedonia/Greece and ruled for close to 300 years over Egypt. Because they never deigned to mix their blood with outsiders and only wed brother/sister and occasionally uncle/niece and cousins, they never actually became Egyptian. Even Cleopatra was genetically Greek. They didn't assimilate with the local people, culture or language (Cleopatra being the only one who bothered to learn the language) and justified their incest by drawing comparison to Greek mythology and thus perceived themselves as Gods. The intermarriages also exacerbated feelings of jealousy and rivalry. Complot and murder within the family were a common occurrence. Aside from a couple of exceptions, they were quite inept rulers and the last +/- 200 years of their reign kind of sucked.
Sounds familiar? In broad strokes, this is pretty much a copy/paste of the history of the Targaryens. Does this sound like something we're supposed to root for? Their reign ended when Egypt submitted to Roman rule. And no, there was no Ptolemaic restoration.

Nyi Blorong [UPG]
This post is my UPG of Nyi Blorong, based on my interactions with her. I don't want to say that this match any version of her legend, since there's tons of them and I don't feel like digging through everything.
Nyi Blorong is the daughter and right-hand woman of Nyai. She is a fierce woman who has high standards, especially for manners and combat stuff. She is loyal to her mother and the Kingdom.
Appearance
She is a shifter, sort of? Her main form is a half woman half snake, but she can shift into full human and full gigantic snake, as well as anything in-between. Her snake form resembles Yellow-Bellied Sea Snake, though I'm not that knowledgeable about snakes so I don't know if it's it or a similar species. Her full human form is at least around 1.50 m tall. She is a light skinned Javanese person(non mixed light skinned. How am I supposed to explain this rip), but has tanned and have some tan lines. Her eyes are deep brown, and round in shape. Hair is long and is held by a bun most of the times, it's also black. She usually wears a red/brown top with armour and sometimes gold ornaments. Sometimes she carries a staff, sometimes it's a spear, sometimes she doesn't carry anything.
Personality
She's a very fierce woman. That's all, that's the point, case closed. She won't hesitate to threatened you if she thinks you're crossing a line. Being a royalty herself, she was raised in a pretty strict environment and requires her to learn a lot about manners and stuff(actually she's used to being treated a certain way), and have a high standard about it. She's very cautious and never let her guard down. She's a really good leader, I must admit. Not an overdramatic person. Honest. Sharp-mouthed. Put her Kingdom and Nyai above everything. Can and will catch you off guard.
Blabbering
I don't really get along with her that much. Our personality kinda clashes with each other, and she has threatened me a lot I don't even bother trying to get on her good side anymore. My status could play a role in this, but eh. I must admit that I admire her strength and that I may or may not be slightly envious of her.
Her energy also overwhelms me a lot. I can't handle it like I can handle Nyai's, and it sucks. I really wish that I can handle hers.
Is the amount of soldiers accompanying her necessary? That's my eternal question, friends.
Others
Most versions say that she wears green, but she almost always wear red or brown. Probably because she only comes here with Nyai and doesn't want me to confuse them both(as if I can't tell). Or that she only wears green on certain situations. I think I'll ask her about this next time she comes.
"Don't make me gouge your eyes" is one of the first sentences she said to me. I'm 100% done with her then and there. Also I somehow understand what she was saying despite her talking in Older Javanese and me struggling to understand Modern Javanese.
She's beautiful. Not like, extremely beautiful. But she's above average, I'd say.

So does the reproduction focus for Hekatons lead to, um, homophobia?
There’s quite a lot of homophobia, yeah. Sad trombone noise. :( Simon sure came from a community that was largely homophobic which took him a lonnnnnnng time to unpack. He didn’t even realize how much of it he had internalized!!! I think that is why it took him so long to realize he was into knife lmfao. (and that he was also interested in nail, he just rly didnt get it. i dont think he ever realized that he had a huge crush on nail even to this day. oops.) Homophobia in hekaton communities def clashes with worm ones tho. Worms obviously are very fluid with their genders since they do not generally apply to binary constructs. they dont even think of those much rly. they’re dumb and worms are BEYOND such things. And even when they sorta appear that they do apply to the rules, they generally are also attracted to the same things they themselves look like, so they generally appear very gay.  they are gay. are straight worms even possible?? i dont know....... that feels almost too difficult to pinpoint what a worm is besides being a worm. and anyway the more a worm tries to be ‘human’ the more they’ll prob adopt the bad opinions on gender and sexuality, lets gesture over to dylan as a wonderful example of Worm With The Anxiety™. so like worms and hekatons will usually get in debates and dislike eachothers opinions on things. Worms also just dislike hekatons b/c they smell bad to them and they cannot eat hekatons. But they will obvs work together w/ them on the war against humans. its a business thing. and when humans are dead they’re ttly gonna fight eachother next, probably. weeds and robots roll their eyes in the corner of the room as everyone forgets they exist. Hekatons generally see worms as freaky sexual deviants and if ur a hekaton that sleeps w/ a worm ur probably gay or desperate or WORSE..a DESPERATE gay. Its generally more socially acceptable to sleep w/ humans b/c thats like, dominating and TTLY WINNING the war. high five my dudes. heh!! pwned!! Pirate hekatons are prob the most vile in this regard. Please do not be a human and come across a pirate ship of hekatons. u do not want that. for real. pirate hekatons are nasty and are the reason hekatons get a bad rep lol. Ofc all above is more in reference to hekaton communities outside of the ghost kingdom. In the ghost kingdom, hekatons r socially more accepted to be bisexual and women especially are generally encouraged to have more than one partner. (however communication and healthy relationships is very important n ppl do not tolerate cheating at all. that is super horrible.) So while homophobia isn’t really as much of a thing there. However, There’s still pretty deep issues w/ transphobia and pushing heks to fulfill + conform certain gender roles. :/ Which is a huge reason why locket actually found it..ummm... refreshing to leave??? even though he got exposed to another culture of intense fucked up issues, he does feel a bit more hope b/c worms sorta seem to get it a little better..? (altho honestly, worms kind of just dont think about these things the same way so it can be just as difficult to talk to them abt it. they dont have patience to understand!!!!! who cares about labels!!!!!!! words r stupid!!! UGH im HUNGRY) Locket’s just......optimistically hopeful ok??????? he rly wants to meet another trans hekaton or trans human or trans ANYTHING for real. besides his evil murder dad, which he doesnt want to relate to but can’t help it cuz who the fuck else is there. hello??? he needs more positive/healthy #lgbtrepresentation in his life. he did not expect homophobia to be a thing, btw, that was a pretty upsetting aspect of leaving home. that kinda rattled him for a bit b/c now he feels very insecure over openly expressing his interest in dudes lol. (he’s pansexual/bisexual for the record.)

And feel free to send me an ask any time, I love hearing from readers! :)
II: NICO
Nico was used to the Underworld.
The first time he had entered it had been from the Labyrinth, while running from Camp Half-Blood after his sister Bianca had died. The dark caverns and twisting tunnels had seemed scary to him at the time, but he'd since grown accustomed to navigating his way around them. He knew what paths to take—and more importantly, which to avoid. Even as the son of Hades, there were places in the Underworld where he wasn't meant to go. He'd learned that the hard way.
Over time, he'd also learned of the various entrances from the mortal world: Charon's passage in Los Angeles, Orpheus's door in New York's Central Park, the roving Doors of Death that Thanatos used as his personal gateway. Nico didn't need any of them now, though. Shadow travel was convenient that way. He simply melted into darkness and was transported like a speeding bullet through cold, empty space until he popped out at his destination.
Just one of the perks of being a child of the Underworld.
The only problem was, hitting a precise location in the Underworld was always a tricky business. Although Nico could manage a shadow-jump into the Underworld from anywhere in the upper world, he couldn't always pinpoint where he'd end up when he arrived.
This time, he found himself on the banks of the River Styx. He could hear the deep baritone of Charon the ferryman drifting along upriver, humming that god-awful easy listening music he favoured. The barge was approaching, probably with a full load of newly-dead souls. Nico could feel their presence closing in, clamouring for attention. The recently-deceased tended to be like that: terrified and hungry for reassurance, still clinging to the identities they had held in life. If he listened hard, Nico could sense each one of them—the octogenarian who had passed away in his sleep, the car crash victim whose life support had been turned off, the teenager who had ingested a full bottle of Valium, and many others.
Percy wasn't among them—yet, Nico reminded himself. He turned away from the river and made his way up the shore of black sand, climbing the familiar winding path to the gates of Erebus. The checkpoints were running smoothly today, with the regular lanes moving along almost as quickly as the EZ Death line that went straight to Asphodel. Cerberus gave Nico a hopeful look when he passed through, but Nico shook his head at the enormous, three-headed Rottweiler.
'Not today, old friend,' he said. 'I'm in a hurry.'
He sped up through the Fields of Asphodel, which was easy since the vacuous, chittering spirits there parted before him as always. He usually took the path straight to his father's palace on the south-eastern edge, but this time he turned off towards the left, cutting a trail between the Fields of Punishment and the gated community of Elysium.
The first time he'd ever visited the River Lethe, he'd trudged all the way through the Fields of Punishment to where it was a rushing river gorge cutting through the upper rim of his father's kingdom. Fortunately, he knew enough of the Underworld geography now that he could take a more direct route to where the Lethe snaked down past the Cave of Hypnos to flow more sluggishly across the outskirts of Elysium. It would probably have been a nicer stroll through Elysium to get here, but Nico didn't have time to submit to the stringent security checks at the gates. Even the son of Hades was subject to a thorough frisking at the gates of the most secure community in the Underworld.
Near the river's source in the volcanic mountains, the Lethe was a cascade of violent black water bubbling up from Tartarus, but here on the lower marshes, its colour lightened considerably to a dull grey. Outside the eastern gate of Elysium, a group of souls formed a line along the river to get their drink before reincarnation. One by one they knelt on the river bank and plunged their heads into the lazy river. When they emerged, their ghostly faces looked perfectly serene. The cleansed spirits flickered in the dim light of the Underworld caverns and then disappeared, presumably sent to be reborn into their new mortal lives.
Nico picked a spot a short way upriver from the queueing souls. He approached the banks and then he realised the snag in his plan. He had no jug or goblet or canister with him. In his haste to get here, he had completely forgotten about how he was going to transport the stuff back to the mortal world.
He let out a groan. It seemed he would have to visit his father's palace after all. Did his father even have containers in his palace? Nico wasn't sure. For obvious reasons, he never actually ate or drank anything when he visited.
Nico was about to turn and follow the path back to the palace when a voice hailed him.
'Di Angelo!'
He spun around. A girl with short, spiky black hair and a glowing silver bow slung over her back was walking up to him. There was a delicate silver circlet on her head that clashed badly with the rest of her outfit: a leather jacket adorned with rock band buttons, frayed black jeans, heavy boots, and a black t-shirt with the outline of a deer in the centre. She looked around his age—fifteen or sixteen—but Nico knew she was in fact much older than that. Thalia, the daughter of Zeus, had been that age when he'd first met her five years ago.
In her hands, she carried a bronze stamnos—a squat, circular Greek jar with two stubby handles high up on its sides. It was about half a foot in diameter and just as tall.
'Needing one of these?' said Thalia.
'What are you doing here?'
Thalia raised an eyebrow. 'Annabeth sent an Iris-message. I came to help.'
Nico scowled. 'I don't need help,' he muttered, even though her appearance with the stamnos was fortuitous. He had nothing specifically against Thalia—he didn't even know her all that well—but she led the Hunters of Artemis. He still found it hard not to hold a grudge against the band of immortal girls who had stolen his sister from him and then gotten her killed.
Yeah, okay, so it had been five years ago. But he was a son of Hades. Bearing grudges was his birthright.
'Aren't you forbidden to help boys, anyway?'
Thalia set the stamnos on the bank. 'Percy's a special case,' she admitted. 'Even Artemis has a soft spot for him. And I can see just how much help you don’t need,' she added dryly. 'I'm sure your bare hands would have been the perfect vessel to bring back some liquid Lethe. Super plan, down to the part where you'd definitely remember where you wanted to bring it.'
Nico ignored her sarcasm. 'How did you get here anyway?'
'You think you're the only one who knows about the door in Central Park? And I've been to the Underworld before, you know. It's not even my first time at the Lethe.'
Nico had almost forgotten that Thalia had been with him and Percy on that quest. They'd fought a Titan several miles upriver from this spot and ended up wiping his memories in the Lethe.
Maybe Thalia was thinking about that, too, because she asked, quietly, 'Are you sure about this, Nico?'
'No,' he admitted. 'But it's the only answer I have.'
'Well, let's get ourselves some Lethe water, then.'
Thalia took one handle of the stamnos and motioned for Nico to take the other. Nico was a bit disgruntled at how bossy she was, but it also reminded him slightly of Bianca. Together, they picked up the stamnos and tilted it to scoop up some river water.
'Just what do the two of you think you're doing?'
Nico and Thalia almost dropped the stamnos. They staggered back from the river bank as the ghostly form of a svelte young woman rose out of the water and hovered inches above its surface.
Nico thought at first she was an Underworld soul, one of the group from Elysium heading for rebirth, but she grew more solid as she surveyed them with her arms crossed. Her skin was milky white, which made her look like a marble statue not unlike the sculptures that sprung up every ten feet along the main avenue of New Rome. Except that the contours of her body remained undefined, as if she hadn't finished forming from smoke. Her black dress rippled like waves were moving across its folds. Dark, misty images flashed across the fabric and were absorbed into the creases. Somehow, Nico knew they were all memories, millions of them submerging into the water.
'You're—'
'The goddess Lethe, of course,' she said, looking put out. 'You're taking my waters and you don't even think to ask?'
'We didn't think—' Thalia stammered. 'I mean, we didn't know you—'
'Everyone forgets about me!' Lethe pouted. 'Just because I'm not as fiery as Phlegethon, or as whiny as Cocytus. Is that why? I'm just as powerful as them! More, even—none of them have the power to cleanse the mind of everything.'
'Um, maybe it's because you're the river of forgetfulness,' Thalia ventured. 'That might be why people—er—forget.'
Lethe nodded. 'I am, aren't I?' She trailed the hazy edge of her dress along the water's surface. When she looked up again, her brow was furrowed. 'What was I saying again?'
'You were giving us some water,' Nico said quickly.
Lethe stared at the stamnos. 'Was I?'
'Sure you were!' Thalia said. 'We're just going to get it and be on our way…'
'I don't know,' said Lethe. 'That's high irregular. In fact, I think drinks have to be consumed in-house. I don't do to-go. At least,' she pondered this for a while, 'I don't think I do?'
'Oh, but it'd be great for business,' Thalia said. 'I mean, all the best restaurants have take-away. How else would you make sure people remember you if they don't get to try your products?'
Lethe tapped her chin. 'It's true, I hardly get up to the mortal world. Acheron totally has a monopoly on those streams…and really, I am more powerful, you know. What's Acheron got? Only pain. That's so overdone. Tell me, what other rivers have the power to erase everything? To cleanse the mind and soul completely? Pain, suffering, despair—bah! I can erase all of that!'
Nico leaned forward eagerly. 'Can you heal the mind, then? I mean, if your waters can take away pain and suffering…'
'Of course! What bit of cleansing the mind don't you understand?'
Nico looked at Thalia. This seemed like confirmation that they had hit on the right solution. All they needed now was to actually get the water.
'Wait.' Lethe looked at Nico suspiciously. 'You've been here before, haven't you? You've tried the Lethe treatment?'
'Um, sort of,' Thalia said. 'We've been here. But you didn't appear to us. And we definitely didn't touch the water.'
'Well, maybe not you,' Lethe said. 'But you.' She looked directly at Nico and frowned. 'Ugh, why can't I remember?' She stamped her foot. Nico and Thalia had to jump back to avoid being splashed. 'Hmph. Well, maybe I can't remember, but I can feel it.' She sniffed at Nico. 'You have my mark. The Curse of Lethe.'
'Nico, what's she talking about?'
'It was…before,' Nico muttered. 'Before the Lotus Casino. My father had Bianca and me dunked in the Lethe after our mom died.'
Thalia looked confused. 'But Bianca…she remembered stuff—'
Lethe interrupted. 'I knew it! Though I suppose if you only got dunked…it's not as effective if you don't actually drink, you know. Oh, the memory loss is powerful, of course, but the mind isn't cleaned out. The memories aren't actually dissolved. They can come back, given the right…well, prodding, I suppose.' Lethe scratched her head. 'Hmm. Why am I telling you this again?'
The conversation was making Nico's head spin a little. 'Never mind why. You were saying—it's different if you drink?'
'Well, yes. Souls have to drink. That's the rule—no drink, no rebirth. Can't have people bringing any part of their old lives with them, after all. Drinking cleanses everything: mind and soul. Memories aren't just in the mind, after all. The most important ones, they live in the soul. And I have the power to absorb that—dissolve the core of someone's identity.'
'Is it all in the water, then?' Thalia asked, looking into the murky depths of the river with interest. 'Is that how you get it back?'
Lethe threw her an irritated glance. 'Haven't you been listening, girl? If you drink, there's no getting them back. My waters flow all the way to Tartarus, and beyond that, into the depths of Chaos. That's where everything that is lost goes, in the end. And good luck retrieving anything from that pit.'
'But if you don't drink—say, you just…took a dip,' Nico pressed.
'Ah, like you did, I suppose? You'll still lose your memories. But like I said…hm, or did I? Anyway, you'd forget everything, but your soul would be intact. You could restore your memories, but it's extremely hard.'
'But not impossible,' Thalia said, looking relieved. 'That's great.'
'Not if he has to drink the water to be cured,' Nico reminded her.
'So…what was it you wanted again? Are you after getting your memory back? There's someone else who does that…starts with an "M"…' Lethe rolled her eyes Olympus-ward and stamped her foot again. 'Ugh, why can't I remember?'
'Mnemosyne?' Thalia supplied.
'Maybe. Why do you ask, anyway?'
This conversation was going round in circles. Nico cut in. 'Look, we just need to fill this jar so we can save a life. That okay with you?'
Lethe shrugged. 'Why didn't you say so in the first place?'
She held out her hands for the stamnos. Thalia looked like she was trying not to roll her eyes as they hefted the jar into Lethe's arms.
The murky grey water turned milky white when Lethe scooped it up. She set the filled stamnos down on the river bank. Thalia produced a lid from her pocket and capped it. Nico plucked a leaf from a random plant and carefully wiped off the stray droplets rolling down the side of the jar.
'Easy peasy,' Lethe said. 'Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to…hm, I've forgotten.'
Nico and Thalia didn't wait for her to continue. Lifting the stamnos between them, they hurried off before Lethe could start questioning them again.
'Thanks for the jar,' Nico said when they reached the main path, which was lined with towering oaks that cast long shadows across the ground. One thing about the Underworld—there was never a shortage of shadows. 'I'm going to shadow travel back, so—'
'Can you take me along?' Thalia asked.
Nico had kind of imagined Thalia would leave the same way she'd come, probably going back to New York or wherever the Hunters were right now. He didn't really know what the rules were with them. He always avoided anything to do with the whole group as much as possible.
But Thalia was Percy's friend, too.
'Hold the jar,' he told her. 'Make sure that lid's really tight.'
He took her arm and they slipped into darkness.
OoOoO
Nico stumbled when he landed himself and Thalia back in the infirmary of Camp Jupiter. The stamnos landed on the ground with a loud thud, but fortunately Thalia's grip on the lid was firm. The liquid Lethe stayed safely inside.
'Huh—what—I'm awake, sir!' Clovis, who must have been snoozing again, leapt out of his chair and smacked his head against the elbow of a tall, broad-shouldered Chinese dude.
In the time Nico had been gone, two more demigods had joined the worried circle around Percy, making the infirmary seem a lot more crowded. Or maybe it was just that one of them was Frank Zhang, the bulky Praetor of the Twelfth Legion, who was big enough for two people.
The other was Nico's sister Hazel, who must have sorted out the shape-shifting demon horse that Annabeth had handed off to them. She and Frank were holding hands—hers was so tiny, it disappeared completely in his grasp.
Thalia went straight to Annabeth and hugged her tightly. Annabeth returned the hug in a distracted sort of way. She had been sitting by Percy's bedside with a book open in her lap, gently stroking his hair. There were tear streaks on her cheeks that she hadn't bothered to wipe off. Nico wasn't sure she was even aware of them.
Will caught Nico's eye and mouthed, Gatorade.
I'm fine, Nico mouthed back, although his legs felt a little shaky after his second shadow travel.
Will gave him a stern look and jerked his head towards a side table where he'd already laid out the sports drink.
Nico rolled his eyes, but a secret part of him sort of enjoyed Will's fussing. Not that he'd ever admit it.
At least his boyfriend wasn't being obtrusive about it. Nico drank the Gatorade and felt the energy trickle back into his limbs.
'How does this go, then?' Hazel asked. She eyed the stamnos warily, as if it were another demon horse that might change shape and start spewing its contents at them. 'He has to drink it?'
Thalia looked at Annabeth sadly. 'The healing power comes from drinking. But the memory loss is irreversible.'
'Actually,' Will gestured at the book on Annabeth's lap, 'we were doing some research while you guys were gone.'
Annabeth held up the book and nodded. 'I asked Reyna and she found me this from the Senate library. Turns out the Lethe has been used in potions before: the nepenthe.'
'The drug of forgetfulness,' Will translated. 'Helen of Troy gave it to Odysseus's son to ease his suffering. We just need to add a drop of Lethe to a cup of nectar.'
Hazel looked at them dubiously. 'How is that different? It's still the Lethe. Does diluting it even help?'
'And will it be strong enough?' Frank added. 'I mean, that's a pretty big nectar to Lethe ratio. How much Lethe does he actually have to ingest? There's probably a limit to how much nectar he can take, right?'
'I don't know,' said Annabeth. 'But the records mention that the drinkers had temporary memory loss after drinking. We thought…well, we hoped it would at least give him a chance.'
'A chance is better than nothing,' Thalia said firmly.
Will nodded. 'I think our best shot is to start with the base recipe and monitor him. I can slowly up the concentration of Lethe if it doesn't seem to be working.'
'Can he even drink? Or do you have to, like, IV-it into him?' Frank asked.
They all looked at Percy's comatose form. Will frowned and scratched his head.
'IV is probably the way to go,' he admitted. 'Do you guys have anything for that set up?'
Frank got to his feet. 'The university will have something. I'll go.'
'Hurry back,' Will warned. 'I feel…well, I don't think he has much time.' He gave Nico a significant look.
Nico knew what he meant. He'd always been able to sense when death was imminent, and he could feel that aura thickening around Percy, a cloying layer of smog that was almost tangible. Soon it would start to vibrate with the buzz that alerted the god of death that there was a soul to be collected. Nico didn't think Will had the same ability, but he was probably getting a corresponding message through his healer senses.
Hazel put her hand on Frank's arm. 'Let me go, then,' she said. 'I'll be faster.'
Nico raised an eyebrow when he realised what she was intending to do. 'Are you sure? I could—'
Will shot him a look that said don't even think about it.
'I've practised a couple of times,' Hazel said. 'Besides, it's just across the Field of Mars.'
She took a deep breath and slipped into the shadow of the infirmary door. Watching his sister disappear was disconcerting. Did Nico look like that too when he shadow-travelled—just melting into nothingness? No wonder Will always worried about him.
Annabeth made a strangled noise like a half-stifled sob and took Percy's hand in hers. Thalia patted her on the back.
'It'll be okay,' she said. 'We'll get him back and then you can kill him.'
Annabeth's sob turned into a slightly hysterical laugh. She squared her shoulders and looked at the stamnos. 'We should—we should brew the nepenthe.'
Will was already on it, pulling nectar from the cupboards and carefully measuring out a cup. He brought out a plastic dropper and hesitated. 'We'll need to add a drop of Lethe for now, but someone's going to have to add more at intervals.'
Annabeth uncovered the stamnos. Although her face was resolute, her expression carefully controlled, her hands were shaking so badly Nico thought for sure she would just end up spilling liquid Lethe all over herself.
Clovis, who had surprisingly not dozed off again, grabbed her wrist.
'I'll do it. I'm more familiar with the stuff than all of you. Plus…well, I spend most of my time in dreamland, anyway.' He shrugged. 'There's not much for me to forget.'
Clovis dipped the dropper into the stamnos and came up with it full of milky Lethe. With a steady hand, he added precisely one drop to the cup of nectar. The golden liquid barely changed shade. Nico thought it looked a little paler, but only just.
Hazel sprung out of the shadow of the stamnos right between Will and Clovis. The latter jumped and nearly knocked the whole jug over.
'Geez, just startle us into spilling mind-wiping water everywhere, why don't you?' Thalia sniped.
'Sorry!' Hazel gasped. She held out a rectangular kit to Will, who took it and began assembling the IV bag and needles inside. Hazel lurched away unsteadily. Frank caught her around the waist.
'You okay?'
'Sure. Piece of cake,' Hazel said breathlessly.
Nico held out the Gatorade. She gave him a rueful smile.
'You did fine,' Nico reassured her.
'Clovis,' Will said, 'I'm going to hook Percy up now. I'll need you to add a drop when I say so.'
'Gotcha.' Clovis squared his shoulders and held the dropper like it was a gun he was preparing to shoot.
They all held their breaths as Will inserted the needle into Percy's arm. The pale gold nepenthe ran through the tubes, travelling up his veins.
Nothing seemed to happen.
'Add a drop,' Will said.
Bit by bit, Clovis added Lethe to the potion, which turned gradually milkier. The room was so silent, Nico could practically hear the flow of nepenthe into Percy's veins. He wasn't sure what the Lethe-to-nectar ratio was at this point. Half the cup was already gone.
And then he sensed it.
There was no visible change. Percy's face remained peaceful and blank. His body was still. But Nico felt the sense of imminent death back off a bit.
'It's working,' he said.
The room seemed to let out a collective breath.
'Should we keep this dose, then?' Will asked.
Nico shook his head, though he couldn't say how he knew this. 'Keep going,' he told Clovis.
Clovis refilled the dropper and continued to add Lethe to the nepenthe.
Will put his hands out in front of him, palms towards Percy. 'That's amazing,' he murmured. 'I've never seen anything like it.'
With only a quarter cup left to go, the physical changes began to be visible. Percy's pallor faded. His face twitched. The corners of his mouth quirked upwards and then his lips parted and he drew in a deep, shaky breath like he was cleansing his lungs.
Nico grinned. This was really working.
Then it started to go wrong. The colour in Percy's cheeks, which had come back with the nepenthe treatment, began to fade again. And it wasn't just his face. His entire form seemed to be fading, as though something was leeching his essence away.
'Stop!' Will told Clovis, who withdrew the dropper so quickly, it slipped from his fingers and fell into the stamnos.
It was too late, though. Percy's body became translucent and insubstantial, just like a ghost.
Nico shuddered. A memory flitted into his mind, of another demigod whose physical body had turned to smoke. Whose body Nico had converted into smoke.
But this wasn't quite like Bryce Lawrence, the treacherous Roman demigod whom Nico had ghostified during the Giant War. Bryce had gone black and smoky and sunk straight into the earth. Percy was dissolving into air itself. It was clearly a different thing. Yet Nico felt certain he'd seen it happen before.
The controlled stoicism on Annabeth's face melted into horror. She lunged forward to grab Percy, but her fingers swiped straight through him as his body evaporated completely.
Annabeth spun round to face Nico. 'Where did he go?' she shrieked. 'What happened to him?'
Nico rubbed his forehead guiltily. He'd told Clovis to keep going. But he still felt certain it was the right call. The veil of death wouldn't have lifted otherwise. This was something else, something they hadn't foreseen…
'I don't know…' He knit his eyebrows, trying to send his senses underground, but it was just as he'd ascertained before. Death no longer hovered over Percy. He wasn't in the Underworld.
Then he thought of the souls he had seen on the banks of the Lethe, disappearing after they drank. Ghosts, dissolving into their newborn lives. He thought of Bianca, how he'd lost any ability to track her once she'd chosen that path.
Oh, Hades.
'What?' Annabeth said, seeing the realisation dawning on his face. 'You do know.'
'I think…' Nico gulped. He had to force himself to meet her desperate, stormy eyes. 'I think Percy's been reborn.'
The nepenthe is referenced in the Odyssey as a potion that is supposed to quell all sorrows with forgetfulness. But the actual recipe is my own interpretation, of course!

Let's play devils advocate for one moment. Say J0n3rys does happen... how can it work? D*ny wants nothing short of the Iron Throne, Jon has never wanted to rule. Being cousins might be an issue for anti-Jonsas, but aunt and nephew sounds worse?. D*ny has no problems with taking anything she wants with "fire and blood" but Jon is sick and tired of fighting violent wars. And in GoT's patriarchal society, if D*ny becomes Queen and Jon King, the King will always come first - will D*ny accept that?
Hi, Anon, sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this one… I wanted to take my time to come up with a decent answer for you, but I was often tempted to just say: No, you’re right, it would never work, not in a thousand years.
And I’ll try to go along with your wish to play the devil’s advocate.
I’m going to put this under a cut, because it’s quite long.
First of all, I’d like to point out that incompatability is strictly speaking not enough reason for J0nerys not to happen. There is such a thing as attraction, which simply doesn’t follow any logical rules. Jon and Ygritte for example were also incompatible, at least in a couple of ways. Just think of real-life situations, people who can’t/shouldn’t be together, but still want to for a myriad of reasons.
But of course, this isn’t real life, this is a story and to talk about a possible relationship between two characters, we can’t only look at them as people, but also at their roles in the story.
If we break any story down to the bare components we have a protagonist, who wants to achieve a goal. On the other hand, we have an antagonist whose goal clashes with that of our protagonist and that creates conflict. As you pointed out, Jon and D@ny definitely have these conflicting goals and motivations.
The problem with a story like Game of Thrones/ASOIAF is that it’s just not as clear who is the protagonist and who is the antagonist. It all depends on POV. In this case, we’re familiar with both POVs. Jon is the hero in his own story, but so is D@ny. And the thing is, in their cases we can take this quite literally. They both want to be heroes. You should take this as a very general description, open to many different interpretations.
I think this is what convinces a lot of their shippers they would work together romantically. They both have the best of intentions, but - I think you could feel this coming- the road to hell is paved with good intentions. And that’s especially applicable to D@ny’s narrative. It’s a bit naive to think that good intentions are enough to forgive a character’s mistakes if you ask me, that’s something that’s true for both Jon and D@ny.
To be honest, I could see Jon and pre-Astapor D@ny working, even perhaps Jon and pre-Meereen D@ny… But after Meereen and the fighting pit incident and its aftermath, I can’t, not anymore. At this point, their intentions have changed. The one thing that truly drives them has shifted and their motivations are no longer aligned.
D@ny has embraced her Targaryen legacy and is willing to do anything to take what is hers with fire and blood. I’m not saying she’s going to come in and burn everything to the ground from the moment she arrives in Westeros, but I am anxious to see how she’s going to deal with opposition.
As much as people like to emphasize how righteous and noble her mission to free all the slaves in Slavers’ Bay is - and I’m not even denying that- and while it was crucial for her character development and story arc, it has never been her true mission. Ever since Viserys died, that has always been to conquer the Seven Kingdoms.
She’s always struggled with violence and people suffering and with how she’s supposed to reconcile that with her ambitions as a conqueror, but at this point she’s accepted this as an inevitable part of war.
Jon on the other hand once again finds himself in a position of power he never asked for. I know that on some level it’s everything he’s ever wanted. I feel a lot of people misunderstand Jon when they say he doesn’t want power and that he doesn’t have any ambitions. He does, he’s always wanted that recognition, he’s always known it would never be his, but now that he’s got it, it must fill him with equal measures of guilt and satisfaction.
But Jon is a man on a mission, and he’s going to use the power he’s been given to achieve his goals. He’s still going to do what he thinks is the right thing. Saving the world from the White Walkers is his responsibility, not because he’s Lord Commander or King in the North, but because he’s made the choice to take that mission upon his shoulders. Apart from that the most important thing in Jon’s life is his family.
I think the contrasts here are noteworthy. D@ny wants to rule the Seven Kingdoms, Jon wants to save them. D@ny has chosen the legacy of a family she’s never even known, while Jon has chosen his own family. In the books he chose to break his vows for Arya, on the show he decided to fight for Winterfell, against his desires to abandon everything and go South, because of Sansa and Rickon.
So they are going to clash. This doesn’t mean that J0nerys is not going to happen. I’m actually quite convinced they will in some shape or form, but they’re never going to last.
If Jon bends the knee to D@ny, without consulting Sansa and his bannermen, that’s going to have consequences. I know he might think it’s the right thing if it’s the only way to convince D@ny to help him against the White Walkers, but it’s not going to end well. And he should know that.
If Jon marries D@ny, this is going to cause problems for Jon. His bannermen will not accept a foreign queen, especially not one who wants to be more than a consort. Jon should know that.
Neither of these events are necessarily romantic. And on top of that, I don’t think either of them has their minds on romance at the moment. Emilia Clarke even commented that D@ny has set her desire for a man aside, because she wants to focus on the Iron Throne. But let’s say that despite the circumstances something does occur between the two of them.
Most likely this will, at least initially, only be them looking for comfort in a moment of weakness, and there could be some form of mutual physical attraction as well. This does in no way imply that feelings are involved. People like to say that Jon wouldn’t have sex with someone he’s not in love with, but I don’t know what they’re basing this observaton off. I don’t believe Jon was truly in love with Ygritte the first time they had sex.
But let’s assume that this evolves into more than sex. The circumstances just aren’t right for them. Even then, they could make it work for a while, despite their differences and despite their conflicting goals. It’s inevitable however that at one point R+L=J will be revealed. This is going to cause tension and conflict between them.
Jon will be appalled by the fact that D@ny is his aunt, she will feel threatened by his claim to the Iron Throne. Jon is going to struggle so badly with this revelation and I can see him turning away from D@ny at this point, trying to reconnect to his real family he might feel he has lost at that point. And while D@ny might be willing to put her fears aside because in Jon she can finally gain a family member, his response to the news isn’t going to go over well with her.
Let’s say they are able to overcome even this. The North will not be as willing to follow Jon once they find out about R+L=J. If they’re already in the middle of a war against the White Walkers, they might turn a blind eye for now, in order to survive, but in the long term, it’s not going to work out.
I think it’s very likely that D@ny will die in the War for the Dawn, be it Nissa Nissa style, sacrificing herself or giving birth to a magical Targcest baby. I don’t even want to rule out the possibility that D@ny does go full mad queen at some point or that she at least does something Jon won’t be able to forgive her. I can see Jon being forced to kill her. He’s always felt guilty about Ygritte dying, as if he was truly responsible for her death, so it could be possible we’ll see a repetition of this, but with Jon truly killing his lover.
I know there’s a chance Jon will not survive the War for the Dawn either, but please let me live in denial for as long as I can and let’s assume for a while that both of them survive.
The North will still be a problem. After the White Walkers have been defeated or however which other way the conflict will be resolved, I can see Jon more than willing to abdicate in favour of Sansa, Arya or Bran, but I don’t think D@ny is going to give it up so easily.
This will create yet another conflict between her and Jon, and if it comes to it, Jon will choose the Starks over D@ny. But let’s say that they find a solution. D@ny will still want an alliance with the North, most likely through marriage. She might ask Sansa and Tyrion to renew their marriage, but I don’t think the North would accept that.
The other option of course is for Jon to marry either Arya or Sansa. Jon and D@ny might be willing to set their personal desires aside for the good of the realm. I don’t like this option for any of the people involved.
But let’s take this yet another step further and assume that they find some other way to solve this problem and Jon and D@ny can be together. Where will they end up? D@ny is not going to agree to come and live in Winterfell, so it would be King’s Landing for them.
This would never work out. Jon would be miserable in the capital, away from the North and his family, trapped in that viper’s nest. He and D@ny would clash constantly, both over political matters and personal ones.
As you’ve pointed out, Westeros is a patriarchal society and even if Jon wasn’t a Targ, most lords would consider him the true ruler, not D@ny. She’s not going to be able to accept that. D@ny wants to be a Queen Regnant, not a Queen Consort. And while Jon would probably accept the title of Prince Consort instead of being King, the lords of Westeros would probably still treat him as the King.
Perhaps if they had children together, this could save them. But chances are that D@ny really is barren, or that she’s unable to deliver a healthy child. This would not only put more strain on their relationship, it would also be a political disaster.
I could see either of them ending up looking for comfort elsewhere. You might say this is OOC for Jon, but people simply do things which are uncharacteristic for them when they’re extremely unhappy. And in that case I could see Jon turning to Arya or Sansa or another Northern woman.
So, in the end I’m going to give you the same answer, Anon. No, it would never work out. And I want more than that for Jon. I want him to get his happy ending, his dream of being a lord, marrying a lady and having a family of his own. And in my opinion there’s only one other character whose dreams are completely aligned with his and that’s Sansa.

wei50-blog replied to your post “Becoming Royals the Khitan Princess Woo-Hee was unlike any woman she’d...”
Aww love the mother daughter relationship! Esther here to see Rachel/ visit her father, but also for what other reason? Remind Rachel of her duty to the country? Establish ties for the spy system, maybe meet Chang-Yi? And now we know what happened to Esther’s (older/ younger?) sister!!! Were the two sisters close? How old was she when she was sent as a tribute? Was the sister not considered by Dong-Wook as a candidate also? Wow, what a complicated situation!!!
As far as Rachel knows, Esther came to see her before wedding because I made up a little pre-wedding custom for them to bond over. (I feel like there had to be something for mothers and daughters before sending them off to a man but I couldn’t find anything legit in my research, so I’m just winging it ^^;)
Rachel probably won’t know if there was another reason for Esther to visit until much later.
It was Esther’s older sister. They were very close and it was the previous king that sent her as tribute to Khitan. She was about sixteen or seventeen and it devastated their father that she was chosen. Fortunately for her, there was genuine love that grew between her and the prince she was sent to marry, and she thrived in a much less strict system. There have been letters but not much.
Dong-Wook only had eyes for Esther and he told his father he wanted her. But there are many who see Lee Jae-Shin’s refusal to agree to the match on Esther’s behalf as payback for the previous king taking his oldest daughter so shortly after his wife died.
Timeline? Esther turned down Dong-Wook… Sister sent as tribute… King died/ Dong-Wook became king... Esther turned down Dong-Wook again… Lee Jae-Shin stepped down as PM… Kim Nam-Yoon became PM, then rebelled? Boy, the Kims are ambitious trying to war with multiple kingdoms at same time! They must have a lot of powerful resources!
Sister was sent as tribute and then Esther turned Dong-Wook down and married Tae-Hoon to protect Jae-Ho from any retribution. Lee Jae-Shin stepped down as Prime Minister and shortly thereafter, Kim Nam-Yoon because Prime Minister for about eighteen years and then rebelled.
The Kims were very wealthy so they were able to bribe several generals. Dong-Wook’s mismanagement of the country did not help. The only problem is that Kim Nam-Yoon helped that mismanagement along and people are aware that he wouldn’t be a good king. He’s been trying to set up Won as the better alternative and so far it is working.
Until Young-Do started becoming popular--which is a double edged sword for Dong-Wook. Young-Do is a better choice than Won for him but that’s still a rebellion that could be taken over by Young-Do.
Esther’s opinion on love matches seems pretty negative maybe because of her own experience with Ja-Ho? Someone who she loved and wanted to be with, but eventually he lost her trust. Wonder what regrets he has now, 5-6 years after. Also, what did Esther’s father want her to do when the king wanted her to be his concubine since marrying Tae-Hoon would not be her father’s choice?
Young Esther very much believed in the nobility of love and while she did not have the bad life that the queens did, she does regret not becoming a queen, especially when Dong-Wook offered to make her THE queen. She knows now that she was capable of doing what her father wanted--taking over the royal line with her children.
She would’ve murdered Dong-Wook the moment she had a boy.
She thinks Rachel has the ability to take over the royal line in the same way if Young-Do proves to be like Dong-Wook.
To Esther, love is a weakness that she cannot tolerate, and it was very difficult for her to give those words and her heart to Ji-Hyuk.
Interesting that Kyung-Ran would have wanted Esther to be in the palace? Maybe changed? Before because did not know how awful the king was in all ways, Esther was a threat. But now that the country is sliding into ruin and the king has nothing to stop his cruelty, possibly she sees that Esther could have made a difference?
Esther was also a threat to baby Young-Do and Myung-Soo. They were about four years old when the king became obsessed with Esther. The women knew her better and knew that Esther would stop at nothing to obtain her agenda. When Dong-Wook offered to let Esther take Kyung-Ran’s place, Kyung-Ran stood to lose everything. She had no way of knowing whether or not Esther would protect her or work with her until much later in life.
Kyung-Ran and Jae-Kyung try not to dwell on the problem that is Esther. It does them no good to think about what could’ve been.
Grandfather Lee seems awesome! Would be a great candidate for PM. Why doesn’t he want to be? Because Dong-Wook is an awful king and he doesn’t want to work under him? What role does Lee Jae-Shin play now in the palace? Also, confused? Grandfather Lee was granted the family name by Rachel’s grandfather? (Esther’s?) Also, it was not an inherited title? Or maybe he was not the first in line for the title?
He is pretty cool :D And he will be a good ally for Rachel later >.>
General Lee was a commoner that was given nobility status through Lee Jae-Shin (who was also a military officer). He created a special branch of his house for the general and his descendants. It also allowed the general to purchase his wife from the pavilion, which is something only nobles, court officials, or officers of rank can do because gisaeng technically belong to the government. Some of this is Joseon era stuff since the information I have on Goryeo is highly limited, so I fill in the blanks to suit my story ^^;;
And Lee Jae Shin (Esther’s father, Rachel’s grandfather) dabbles in court affairs because he is probably the highest ranking noble outside of the Choi family, so he has to offer his opinion, but he is very judicious. Right now he is increasing his influence and wealth with the merchants.
Haha Woo-Hee, another crossover? How old is she? Like her candor and honesty! Aawwww baby!!! I know wet nurses were the norm, but why is that at this time? Is her baby’s father with her in the palace? Friendly terms exist between the two kingdoms because tributes in the past sent to strengthen relationship (alliance?)? Also, that the Khitan would seek shelter for Woo-Hee does say that they are not enemies.
The baby’s father is the bodyguard :D While marriage customs are different, and Woo-Hee isn’t shamed for sleeping with men she’s not married to, her father wanted her to wait until his war problems were settled before marrying. He didn’t think it would be a big deal that she had a son--it just proves she’s fertile and can produce boys. Goryeo is a bit different and so there will be a culture clash.
Woo-Hee breastfeeds because she’s nomadic and is a lot more pragmatic. Rachel will be expected to use a wet nurse because that’s the custom of wealthy women. But she might spend some time with Woo-Hee an hear about emotional bonding and how her personal milk makes her son stronger >.>
Khitan and Goryeo are not enemies but they are not exactly allies either. Khitan is a huge nomadic territory with a very large army. The tribute was one sided--pay us and we won’t invade.
About ten years ago, General Lee was in the middle of a skirmish with Khitan on the border over control of a precious resource that Goryeon felt was theirs and Khitan wanted it as tribute. This happened when his wife and youngest son died in childbirth. He was so furious when the news came, he wiped out one of their strongest battalions. The tribute has been smaller since but Esther’s sister had already been sent at that point.
Khitan is hiding its decline and Woo-Hee’s father is trying to protect her by sending her to Goryeo and her mother’s people. He just didn’t know the political landscape well enough to send Woo-Hee directly to her grandfather. But Rachel fixed it :D
Woo-Hee is an original character. I stole her name from an actress or another character on another drama I didn’t watch ^^;;
Circumventing the king! Oh no! This action will just fix R in his mind as a threat to his control! Basically this would remove the Khitan princess as a pawn to be used by the king. This is not going to make him happy, because he wants support from the Khitan, and with this move, his advantage is gone! Good to have the reminder that the king is not infallible, but his absolute power and cruelty is not something R can take lightly. (yes, warn Woo-Hee as soon as possible!)
Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Will Grandfather Lee be willing to thwart the king by taking in the Khitan princess? Wow, possible to become his heir! Much more than what the Khitan princess was hoping for! Would also removing possibility that she would marry in the future for the safety it would provide her and her son! This is good for Rachel and Young-Do, but the king….
:D :D :D

Hmm… what actually does Bo-Na know about Chan-Young? Did he tell her, but she is keeping quiet to keep him out of the focus of the palace as much as possible? Want Bo-Na to meet Woo-Hee!!! Can just imagine them talking shop, learning from and teaching each other!

The love story plan succeeded in a sense that the Khitan princess knew that marrying Young-Do would not be possible for her. Aww Young-Do! He knows all the right things to say, and it’s wonderful that he means them too! Well, it did result in positive reinforcement of making out, so have a feeling this happens a lot! They just love to be with each other! (Yes, mark the kings spies!!!)
It told Rachel that she was being watched in the ways she thought she was being watched. And it did what she wanted--discouraged Woo-Hee from seeking protection in Young-Do.
And Young-Do is just happy he doesn’t have to care about it because Rachel’s handled it beautifully--showing that she is Esther’s daughter >.>
Rachel enjoys showering positive reinforcement on Young-Do and he makes it so easy for her :D
Is something going to happen when Rachel goes back to the palace? How was she able to leave without any guards or servants? Go Nam-Il is good, but… Is going to all the temples a ploy to get Young-Do away from Rachel for a long period of time?!? The reason is plausible, but…. These three days and two nights are going to be so long!!!
This is not the thing to worry about :D

A, E-G, I-K, N, P-Z? sooo basically most of them :'D
Why do you do this to me? ;A; I never read any of the questions before I post, urgh.
Right.
A. If you could rec a piece of music to accompany one of your fics, what would you pick? Why?
Uh. Well I know that Dance For Me has a song. I had the idea and the title and began writing before I needed a song and went looking. This is what I found:
youtube
E.  Who’s your favorite main character you’ve written?
Arthur. Or APH England. He’s the easiest for me to write for some reason.
But I like my OC from my novel, Benrial. He’s pretty easy to write because, after thinking about it, he’s a more confident, more fun and just better version of me.
F. What stories are you planning for the future?
Well. I’m in the middle of writing my Christmas one-shots. I’ve counted and there’s 15. (I’m supposed to start posting them on Wednesday cause it’s twelve days till Christmas then - unless I counted wrong which is highly likely. Urgh, numbers.)
Then I’m gonna do this thing cause I wanna write more Voltron stuff but I have too many things started and not enough time, dammit!
After that, it’s Hunk’s birthday and I’m gonna do one-shot birthday things for all the paladins! ... Even if Shiro technically has no birthday... They’ll all be different birthdays from different universes. For instance, Hunk’s will be from a soulmate AU. Actually, I’ll just tell you all of them’s since I’m excited: Shiro’s will be canonverse because canon Shiro needs a break. Pidge’s will be a chat AU and... I’m not sure how I’ll do in that cause I’ve not done one like that before that I can recall... Lance’s birthday is in a fantasy AU where it’s his destiny (along with Hunk and Pidge and Keith) to save the kingdom but there’s a misunderstanding and angsty hurt and the Galra catch him and, well. Keith gets his birthday in a zombie apocalypse because he had to go and be born in the month of Halloween. (I would’ve written it this year but, urgh, time. There is not enough of it.)
They’ll be written between the continuation of the Sticky series because I have a lot of ideas for that AU so. I should point out that I mean a continuation from the second chapter of Glue and not the first one.
And in between this, I need to finish of the chapter I started of Shadow House 2, try writing more of my novel and I really wanna write more of Lance’s Fury.
So, uh, does anyone want to pay me to write instead of going to work so I have time for all this?
G. Where do you think you grew the most this year?
Probably my belly.
Nah, kidding.
I think I’m... pretty much the same? I think I might be getting better at mimicking other’s styles, like I apparently did with Thames’ Child. I’m not sure that’s a good thing.
Then again, I did write over 50,000 words of my novel and I never finished it so I reckon I did better than my first attempt which... eh. *shrugs*
I. What’s your favorite work you did this year? Why?
Hm.
*goes to AO3*
Hm. I quite liked Neighbour. And Glue. Which, uh, says a lot about me... Or says that I’m kinda dissatisfied with all the half-finished stories I apparently have lurking around. *sighs*
J.  What are the best jokes you told this year? Any jokes you thought were funny that people didn’t catch? Vice-versa?
Uh... Hm. Heh, the one I can actually remember is the jokes they tell in the second version of Glue where it’s ‘not as if a vampire will lure me away’ or something to that affect.
Also! Any of the jokes in Thames’ Child because I managed to evoke the source material for the crossover quite well, I think. :3
K. Who have you killed this year? Why did they have to die?
... I think it best I not say... ;P
But, lemme see...
Wait, I can’t say without spoiling things! But, well, I killed Arthur and Gilbert at points because of the universe and the idea.
But, in Shadow House, wow. So many die. It’s meant to be a horror story - kinda like a horror movie where people are dying in horrible ways
N. Anything you were planning to write that never got written?
I have a document solely with Hetalia fanfic ideas which is 84 pages long. To be fair, some of them have been written but I’ve kept them in the document because I had vague ideas of what could happen next (these are usually one-shots).
I also have a separate document for every other fandom idea and that’s 14 pages long, including notes for one I’ve started. Or for one-shots I wanted to continue and haven’t gotten around to it.
P. What are your pet peeves in other people’s work?
When they don’t make it clear who’s talking.
By that, I mean, they have the person speaking named in the next paragraph for some reason. Or they close their speech but all they needed to do was take a new paragraph.
I get confused easily - don’t do that to me. :(
Q. Quote three bits of writing you read his year. Can be your writing, or not.
I’ll just use my own...
From Fortune:
"Then Arthur came to this action on his own," Alfred declared. "And he will be punished, in a way. But there is something else to note. Arthur, your toga..."
"What about it?" Arthur asked distractedly as his heart sank. He was more focussed on his previous comment. There were only two ways to punish a god: strip them of their powers and lock them away for a millennia or to kill them outright and replace them with another. Arthur would not mind dying but the idea of being unable to see Gil fulfilling his life while he was locked away would be a torture he didn't want to endure.
"Have you not noticed?" Alfred asked, a smile beginning to grow. "Look."
Without thinking, Arthur obeyed, looking down. His eyes widened when he realised what he was looking at: his toga was now white. And, now that he thought about it, he had once worn black, had he not? He stared down at himself, confused.
From Lance’s Fury:
Just as they reached the adjoining corridors, there was movement and Lance jerked away as something came towards him. Whatever it was, it was fast and probably deadly. He grasped for something to defend himself with but he didn't carry a knife and there wasn't a vast source of water around. Before he could even think of taking the water from the air around them, another movement cut in front of him and two blades clashed just a hand's breadth from his heart.
Blinking once, his eyes focussed and he found Keith wielding a knife against Pidge's dagger. Keith and Pidge struggled for a moment before they broke away. Lance staggered back, still in shock, his heart hammering in his chest. He had almost been killed... By Keith.
"Keith-" Pidge began but the other academ had focussed his attention on what he seemingly deemed the greater threat and launched himself at her, his windcrafting ruffling her hair as he used his increased speed to fight her. Thankfully, Pidge was using her metalcrafting and was just as fast, keeping up with every swing.
"Oh man, oh man, oh man," Hunk was mumbling beside Lance. "What do we do?"
From Glue:
Unable to think of an intellectual response to that, Arthur merely said, "You're ridiculous."
"And you're actually smiling – it's pretty."
Arthur sucked in a breath, startled by the comment. His heart did an odd thing where it fluttered and clenched and seemed to swell all at once. It was way too soon for him to entertain thoughts for anyone but Kiku, in his opinion – even if he had been dumped. And Kiku clearly had no intentions of returning to him. So he was on his own and free to do as he liked. Shaking his head to clear away his thoughts, Arthur turned to Alfred and held out his hand.
"I've not actually introduced myself. I'm Arthur Ki-"
He was interrupted with a loud laugh. "Dude, you totally don't need to be so formal. But, Arthur, huh? It's a cool name. Suits you."
Again, Arthur couldn't stop his lips from twitching up into a smile. "Your foam moustache suits you, too."
R. If you had to rewrite one of your stories from scratch, which one would it be? What would you do to it?
This lot. I’d make it more realistic. Like, do actual research into the porn industry? Or just make their reactions and stuff more... I dunno. I mean, it’s okay just now but I’m just gonna continue it rather than go over it.
Also, all my earlier stories on ff.net - I would scrub all the attempts at accents. Urgh. (Though, some of the stories, the accents are supposed to be exaggerated versions which would disguise them. Or something.)
S. What’s the sexiest thing you wrote this year?
....
Well: Neighbour, Glue, Thames’ Child, To An Ell Broad, Dance For Me.
T. Themes, motherfucker, do you have them? What are they?
... I don’t really get this question. Themes for what? In general? Because, if so, not really...?
Oh, wait. I think I understand it now... But I can’t think of what my stories have for themes...
=/
U. Any stories that took a abrupt u-turn from where you thought they were going?
When I started The Keeper, I thought it was gonna be simple. It’s... not any more. Also needs to be updated. ^^”
V. Which story was the most viscerally pleasing to write? Tell us your narrative kinks.
... I honestly liked writing them all? I like the ideas finally being put down. Then they leave my head, poof! And people leave kudos and I’m like, “Wait, what was that one again?”
I can’t think of any... kinks...
W.  Who are your favorite writers?
Hm, well, @zeplerfer, obviously. And... there are others but I’m just too lazy by this point to go looking for links to the ones on AO3.
X. What’s your least favorite work of this year?
Actually, one I’ve not posted yet. The first Christmas one I finished. The prompt limits you to ‘enemies in the same company’ and my mind just went ‘nope’ so what I got down was horrible. I feel bad cause it’s for an anon...
Y. Why did you write? For fun, for a friend, for acclaim?
For fun.
Also, always wanted to be an author, even if I took a course in something completely different!
And I think I’d go insane if I didn’t, to be honest.
Z. If you could choose one work and immediately finish it, what would it be? How would you end it?
Hm. This is difficult. I want all of them to be finished so everyone can find out what happens in them!
... But I’ve been thinking about A Harmless Archfiend and it would end in death and sacrifice and love.
Flipping finally! I thought I’d be at this all night! O.o I hope these answers are good enough?
