“A True Master,” Guitarist Steve Morse Quits Deep Purple to Care for Ailing Wife
- “Steve has a legacy with Deep Purple that can never be forgotten,” Ian Gillan says
After taking a leave of absence to care for his ailing wife, guitarist Steve Morse has quit Deep Purple after 28 years with the band.
Janine Morse is battling cancer and Steve Morse is devoting his time to being her “helper and advocate” going forward.
Simon McBride, who stepped in for Morse in April, will continue in the role.
“I know Simon has the gig nailed already, but I'm now handing over the keys to the vault which holds the secret of how Ritchie (Blackmore’s) ‘Smoke on the Water’ intro was recorded,” Morse said in a statement.
“I guess you have to jiggle the key just right because I never got it open.”
Morse joined the band in 1994 and was Deep Purple’s longest-serving guitarist. His departure ends the band’s longest unchanging lineup, consisting of Morse, drummer Ian Paice, bassist Roger Glover, singer Ian Gillan and keyboardist Don Airey, who joined in 2002.
Morse is a “true master” of the guitar, his now-former bandmates said, though Gillan added his departure “come(s) at a terrible time for everybody,” as the group tries to rev back up after a two-year pandemic layoff.
“Steve has a legacy with Deep Purple that can never be forgotten, and that smile will be missed,” Gillan said in a statement.

Simon McBride "The Fighter"
Blues-Rock de qualitat el que ens presenta aquest guitarrista/cantant Irlandès que es mou amb so càlid i agressiu de la seva PRS entre Eric Gales i Joe Bonamassa (amb reminiscències Phil X). No l'estem comparant amb qualsevol i és que, encara que poc conegut o desconegut per molts, bé s'ho mereix. No en va, al 2016 va reemplaçar Micky Moody en els Snakecharmer, així com a Steve Morse, temporalment, aquest any en els Deep Purple.
El seu 5è. àlbum d'estudi, sona molt bé i ens allunyà una mica del convencionalisme del clàssic Blues-Rock, portant-nos per camins Zeppelians (els riffs principals de "Don't Dare", cert aire en el tempo de "Kingdoms"), Thunderians (segons quines melodies ens recordaran als seus compatriotes), els lents "Show Me How To Love", la deliciosa "Let Me Go" i, fins i tot, Pop (la tornada de "Just Takes Time", "Trouble" amb una intro molt Hendrixiana) però sempre amb una essència molt fresca i poderosa ("The Fighter", "High Stakes" o "Back To You" en són un clar exemple), tenint molt present sempre el paper de la guitarra. Tancarà el set-list amb el superb cover "The Stealer" dels Free, on posarà tota la carn a la graella amb un exercici inteligent i gens embafador de la seva tècnica.
Un treball tan divers com compensat, ple de creativitat i bon gust, on la guitarra trepidant d'en Simon, sobre unes esplèndides composicions, ens farà vibrar.
