SAINT ELECTRIC CHURCH OF EXCESS
The sign clicks on and off to the beat of any and all songs on the radio. Another miracle of the Saint. Today is no different - as I pull into the church’s parking lot, the neon light keeps time with the songs on Sid’s frequency. However, today is a special day, and I am too excited to sit in my car and admire the miracle – I grab my mask and slam the door. The sign winks along to that, too.
I hang back a to allow my coworkers to enter the building. When I enter, I want the giant doors to open for me alone. I step under the neon sign and the Saint Electric grants me passage. The giant doors of the church open for me and I enter the shipping floor. Boxes on conveyor belts roar past, feeding the hungry trucks idling impatiently in the bay doors. The smog from their engines darkens the vast space of the church, reminding me of the dark purple colour of today’s reward, and I nearly dance in the elevators.
The elevators spew me out on the third floor, and already the race is on. Under the neon sign ‘Assembly’ I make sure to delegate my work to the best of my ability, so that I will be the one to receive today’s prize. I pass the toy car schematics to Julien, and their circuit boards to Fay to be soldered. The packaging I give to the newest disciple, until I get thirsty and change my mind, making her instead fetch us coffee. By that time she had pushed the colourful boxes onto the woman in the adjacent cubicle, and was already prowling around the Reward Desk. What luck – I must be in the Saint’s favour today.
The thought propels me through the afternoon. I’m so busy I work straight through lunch, making sure everyone has enough to do, supplementing their workloads with mine if it looks like they might finish before the shift is up. Tracy manages to free herself up enough to start glancing at the Reward Desk, so I stop by her desk to invent that my higher-ups expect 100 Relaxing Embroidery packages to be shipped out by the end of the day. Her smile is murderous and as white as my to-do list.
The last half hour of my shift I spend stalking the perimeter of my cubicle, doing the same as everyone else - sending furtive glances at the others, making sure everyone else is swamped with work.
The bell is sweet and clear when it rings, and I am already running through the corridor towards the Reward Desk. The other workers, those freeloaders, still attempt to get to the Desk even when I KNOW they have work to be doing – I bodily push them back into their cubicles as I sprint past. A hand digs into my bicep and I slash at it with my boxcutter. Alex lets go, howling. I don’t stop my sprint.
The next hour is a dream. The Reward Desk, effused in holy light, delivers unto me my reward. The jealous stares do no harm as I punch out. I float down to my car and drive home, ‘CHURCH OF EXCESS’ blinking in my rear-view mirror, keeping time for me.
In my two-room apartment I collapse, the adrenaline waning from my system. I basically crawl into my showroom, hugging my reward to my chest. Gingerly, I avoid knocking down the colourful products arranged in patterns on the floor, and settle in a ring of rainbow shampoo bottles. It is missing only one colour. My hands shake as they peel the tape off of the packaging I saw the newest disciple pushing onto her co-workers desk just earlier this morning.
What rolls out of the packaging is so… I can’t even describe it. I just stare at it. I admire the ergonomic design, how the bottle curves gently in the middle, beckoning me to hold it – it will so perfectly fit into my hand once I muster up the energy to move. And oh, the scent is a wonderful subversion of my expectations, promising a Lychee Experience when I expected a more floral fragrance. I laugh breathlessly at the clever marketing. This is indeed a Lychee Experience. The purple exterior is entirely unlike the pale goodness inside.
I push the shampoo bottle into its rightful place beside a lighter shade of purple called Lavender Blush and a darker shade called Sighing Night. The completed ring of multi-coloured bottles is a carousel around me as the neighbours turn on Sid’s channel, his smooth tones promising more non-stop hits. I drift off in the showroom.
Some hours later, I awake at a particularly loud closing riff and catch Sid’s midnight monologue. He says the Saint Electric is granting her followers a new addition to her shampoo line – he says it’s called Mulberry Magic. Happily, I reach a sleep-warm hand out and move Sighing Night a bit to the left. I can already imagine what Mulberry Magic will look like.
I try to sleep again. Tomorrow is a very exciting day.

After the Battle
“Oh? Finally returning to the land of the living, my dear?”
When Zahra opened her eyes, an unfamiliar ceiling greeted her. She tried to move around but none of her limbs listened to her. Every part of her body felt as heavy as lead and her head felt as if it were on fire. Slowly, she closed her eyes and let out controlled breaths. Keep calm, regain control of self and then surroundings.
“Hello?” the voice came in again, distracting her from her concentration. “Please do not ignore me, I am the one who pulled you from Death’s Door, my dear. I’d like to check up on you, if you’re up to a bit of talking before I have you rest a bit more.”
“....” the voice did not get an immediate response from Zahra, but this didn’t seem to thwart her from busying herself. She watched idly as a lalafellian woman began to check her pulse and other vitals. “Hmms” and “Aha’s” were had as she was poked about. A strange herbal scent surrounded her, oddly soothing, but she preferred incense herself.
“Looking better, but I’d still prefer it if you had a proper clinic for those bullet wounds and lacerations. I’ve healed you up as best as I could and the poultices are helping, but you’ve suffered from significant blood loss and sadly I’ve not many supplies here to aid in getting you proper nutrients in your system. I doubt you get this from adventuring, lass. Where do you hail from? If naught else, you could relay upon me that.”
Zahra’s mouth and throat were parched. After a few moments of weakly trying to gesture to the woman that she needed something to drink, the lalafellian woman jumped off of her stool to head into a different room. Taking the time to look around, Zahra noticed that she was laying on a cot and wherever she was had been sectioned off with curtains. There wasn’t too much to see, a small table with medical supplies, all fresh and clean. There was a bin to the far opposite end of the sectioned space where if she attempted to sit up and squinted she could see disposed bandages practically pouring out of the large bin. They were all stained crimson.
Oh. She really had been injured.
Her caretaker returned with a glass of water and after helping Zahra take a few drinks, she was able to talk, although her words were harsh and strained.
“Not sure how much I can tell you,” her words were stilted and sounded strange coming from her. “But yes, I was on a battlefield. Were...too many injured so I left to find a healer. I didn’t realize it was as bad as it was. Sorry.”
“Sorry doesn’t do you much good if you’re dead, my dear.” the other woman scolded Zahra. “In the future, do try and take heed of your body screaming at you. Pain is not a weakness, it’s the body’s way of letting you know of your limits, and when you need to seek treatment. Listen to it. If I’d not been a healer and found you when I did, you’d be dead, girl. Do you understand what I’m saying? You’d lost that much blood. Several bullet wounds, lacerations...did you get hit by a bomb or what?”
...To say the least.... she decided not to admit that. “I was uh, with the Black Lions. Do you know them?”
“I can’t say I keep in touch with every group that exists out there. What are they? A mercenary group? Resistance cell? Free company? Certainly not imperial.”
“Uh, resistance. If you want to contact anyone it’d be Barjhzan or Hyjr. I’d guess.”
The woman paused for a moment. “Hyjr? My, my, but that name does sound familiar.” she sets the glass down and sits down beside Zahra. “Well young miss, you cannot stay here, I simply do not have the facilities to continue treating you. I personally recommend a blood transfusion and also something to help keep you from dehydration. I’ve been able to stabilize you. Your bleeding has stopped, I’ve kept you from infection and you won’t die. But that’s the best I could do with my limited facilities. I’m not a miracle worker and aetheric healing can only do so much. I shall write a letter to this...Barjhzan and have him send some people to transfer you to a proper clinic. But that’s enough chatting. You’re still very weak and I need you to rest.”
“My friends...” she tried to reach out toward the lalafellian woman. “Ma’am...”
“Hohoshu Hoshu, my dear.” she gently placed her hands on Zahra’s and settled it on her chest. “Do try not to move, you’re still very weak from the blood loss.”
“But- they might get worried. Leo and Sid and Jasper...”
“If they’re with your Black Lions, I’m sure your commander will let them know of the situation. Worry not, my dear and rest. That’s the best thing you can do for them.”
She didn’t have much of a choice. Despite her efforts, her eyes began to feel as heavy as the rest of her body after using up so much energy talking. Eventually, she found herself drifting off.

So in my Crit playthrough, I happened to get to that scene in the Mysterious Tower before Riku and Mickey go back into the realm of darkness and I have to get this out of my system because for such an innocuous, connecting-tissue kind of scene, it destroyed me.
Now, Sora and the gang confirmed for certain that Ven was in Sora's heart back in Monstropolis, and yet they're basically no closer to saving the Wayfinder trio. Finding Terra depends on Aqua, who depends on Ven, who depends...also on Aqua.
So Riku really has to go back to the realm of darkness. And then Ven's heart volunteers, which startles Sora and everyone else. (They all, understandably, assume this is Sora himself speaking, and even Sora makes that assumption, too. But I don’t think that invalidates anything I’m about to say, because the way things play out afterwards does come from Sora’s feelings.)
So Sora has recently taken a huge hit to his self-esteem with the whole Mark of Mastery thing. In Olympus, he was bothered when Pete commented that he was “punier” than before, and Sora got a little defensive when Goofy pointed it out. And that was just the first example. He's not starting out in a great place emotionally, and he's had others needling him both good-naturedly and not-so-good-naturedly this whole time. Not to mention he's been to five whole worlds now and he's still no closer to the power of waking.
So what Riku says is not what Sora needs to hear.
To make matters worse, everyone is laughing at him. Again.
But what he doesn’t realize is that Riku means it in the most affectionate way possible. Actually, let's look at that scene from 2.8 again.
Riku had his dander up about Aqua's fate being retconned into the story hidden from him for so long, but he backed down when Yen Sid suggested he or Sora would have “staged a reckless attempt at rescue.” Then Kairi mentions the growing similarity between him and Sora, something Riku takes as a compliment. (Also, note that in the Japanese, the word translated as “half-baked” is the same word translated as “reckless” for Yen Sid: 無謀. He’s not insulting Sora any more than Yen Sid insulted him earlier, although Sora is sensitive enough that it clearly does sting anyway.)
So we can say with confidence that Sora's "half-baked rescue" is absolutely a good thing in Riku’s eyes. He doesn't want Sora to throw himself into danger, but he appreciates that side of Sora, the part of him that doesn’t stop to weigh the risks and rewards of helping another person, and just DOES it.
I think everyone else in that room also feels that way to a degree, and that's why they all start laughing. But Sora doesn't feel that way. He's sensitive to these jabs at his competence, and so his frustration here is real. And Riku notices.
Now, I do think Riku doesn't realize how bad it is at this point--I think if he thought Sora was truly deeply hurt (which he kinda is), he would be more awkward here and less smily and relaxed. As it is, he's ironically blinded by his utter faith in Sora and his abilities. To him, Sora is a miracle worker who can do so many things he never could. For example...not getting super down on himself. (We see this one later, too-- "Since when do you mope?") The full extent of what Sora's feeling doesn't really sink in for Riku until the Keyblade Graveyard.
But even if he doesn't see all of it yet, he does notice that the teasing isn't making Sora happy--and so he steps in to comfort him.
And it kills me how easily he does it. He's sure of himself now, and he knows what to say.
(Now, like I said before, it’s strongly implied Sora is volunteering because of Ven in his heart, but Sora IS worried about Riku and Mickey, as we see clearly later when he gets the call from Chip and Dale. So this still stands.)
Sora isn't defending himself here, so Riku does it for him. He's acknowledging Sora's feelings as valid and valuable--a sign of kindness, not just a stupid impulse. Far from something to be ashamed of.
He leans forward here, too, almost enthusiastically. The body language is overall more expressive in KH3 anyway, but Riku especially comes across as less restrained here.
Then Sora looks away. You could see this as shyness at being read so easily, or maybe more self-deprecation at thinking Riku of all people would ever need help. Or maybe it's just that worry coming to the surface. Or maybe he's just wondering where the heck the impulse to volunteer even came from. Or some combination of the above.
Whatever the case, Riku can tell Sora is retreating--so he comes over and puts a hand on his back to support him and pull him back. To create a connection between them and make sure what he's saying gets through. (I’ve already gone off about how Riku doesn’t really communicate through touch, especially not with Sora, and it’s a reflection of how he doesn’t connect as well with others--and this is the first time we ever see a gesture from him like this. It shows a huge change in him.)
"Well, thanks."
No insinuation at all that Sora's worry is unnecessary. He's expressly stating that the intention behind his sudden volunteering is good and valuable and appreciated.
"But the power of waking's important. Once you've got that, then you can come to the rescue."
Your mission is important, too. I don't doubt your abilities.
Riku acknowledges that what he's doing IS important--not just desperately trying to make up for a mistake. Riku really might need Sora’s help--he’s certainly needed it before. Given Sora thinks Riku is "always picking up the slack" in DDD, the reminder that Riku trusts him is important.
And the whole time, Sora's face. He needs this kind of encouragement so badly right now, and you can see the relief and appreciation. This is exactly what he needed to hear.
So it isn't long before he's able to accept Riku's faith in him.
To be honest, Sora's reply here almost feels like a test? Riku is sort of...rewriting the narrative here--changing it from “Sora fails at everything, and he’s so useless and stupid he could never go into the realm of darkness, unlike Riku” to “Sora and Riku have separate missions that are both important, and Sora’s mission may be critical to helping Riku later.” And so Sora’s reply is going along with that second narrative, even though it’s not one he himself fully believes deep down. And Riku plays right back. Because that IS the truth, and it’s what he believes. And that's what Sora needs to hear.
Sora listens to Riku because Riku is someone he admires and respects, but also because he helps him to feel heard.
I love that this scene exists. It’s such a casual, everyday interaction, but it tells us a lot. This exchange isn’t really relevant to the “plot,” per se, but I do think it’s establishing some subtle character groundwork for the sacrifice scene later.
