Sha Na Na, with Donny York on lead vocals, performing I Wonder Why in 1973.
It was originally a hit in 1958 for Dion and the Belmonts (UK viewers will probably also be familiar with the Showaddywaddy cover from 1976). It was written by Melvin Anderson and Ricardo Weeks who, as far as I can tell, didn't write any other hit singles. Probably didn't need to after writing this.
Unfortunately as this was in the days of square CRT TV's we don't get the full Sha Na Na choreographed experience with Joff, tall chap with moustache, on the right cut out of many of the shots. Great version of the song all the same.

Lyrics:
When
When
When
When
Oh, When, (when), when you smile, when you smile at me
Well, well I know our love will always be
When, (when), when you kiss, when you kiss me right
I, I don't want to ever say goodnight
Oh, I need you
Oh, I want you near me
Oh, I love you
Yes I do and I hope you'll hear me
When, (when), when I say, when I say be mine
If, if you will I know all will be fine
When will you be mine?
I need you
I want you near me
I love you
Yes I do and I hope you'll hear me
When will you be mine?
When, (when), when you smile, when you smile at me
Well, well I know our love will always be
When, (when), when you kiss, when you kiss me right
I, I don't want to ever say goodnight
When will you be mine?
Songwriter:
I need you
I want you near me
Oh, I love you
Yes I do and I hope you'll hear me

The 70's did look forward as we have seen in our discussions, yet they were also heavily nostalgic as well. The 50's and the early 60's were the rage then, which can be felt in some cases. Showaddywaddy, for example, made their career by basically being a cover band for the period, though they also felt quite close to glam rock of the time thanks to their production choices. Moreover, their presentation harkened to an earlier era, because their lineup resembled, if you squinted, a possible amalgam of jazz groups and rock bands. I mean, I could actually see them having their own variety show with a lot of questionable skits. Additionaly, you kept having a hunch they stiffled their laughter during their concerts and guffawed like crazy after them.
