Characters and romance
Mono
Mono is bi-attracted and probably has no preference beyond just 'pretty', gets crushes on people all the time.
Despite her numerous crushes, she avoids relationships. Partially because she wouldn't want to make anyone a target because of her eyes (and is convinced nobody would actually love her the way she is) and partially because she knows she could potentially die on the job.
Is probably a bit more open to relationships once she grows older and settles down but still has her eye roadblock so she probably would die comfortably alone tbh.
Even if someone had a crush on her, she would probably never notice. Very dense little ray of sunshine!!!
Values friendships more than anything else. Has a chosen family she would die for.
Alexandros
Alexandros only loves himself let's be honest.
Doesn't really care who or what they are, if they can further him as a person, he'll happily lead them on without any guilt, this guy would commit any number of crimes if it made him stronger or more respected, a person's feelings is nothing to him.
He'd probably end up single like the previous Shadow Mage though.
Once you've made yourself important to him, though? You're NEVER getting rid of him.
Family has always been something he's seen as a breeding ground for toxicity and doesn't really want anything to do with it.
Had a crush on a girl before (cough cough Mono cough cough) due to seeing her as someone similar but fell out of it quickly.
Still remains his only actual real friendship, sees anyone else as networking and nothing more.
Daklarel
Yeah no he's super gay.
Saw Lando in the trainee squadron for the first time and his brain short circuited.
Didn't know what the fuck he was feeling, it was the first time he ever got a crush. Convinced he was hexed. Asked Mono about it bc he was convinced she cast somthing on him. She teased him for months about it.
Denial for a long time until he came to terms with it years later.
Lando is very friendly and touchy, it did NOT help his crush at all.
Asked him out but wanted to keep it a secret. Lando, bless the baby's soul, agreed.
Probably very distant because of his childhood, eventually broke up because Lando wanted more affection and he couldn't do it.
They get back together after the comic for SURE. Much healthier thls time.
Most people only want to be his friend because of his status and family. Very good bs detector because of this.
Reno
Reno would have been the most SUPPORTIVE husband you've ever seen. All he wanted was a cute wife but instead had to lead a cult and he ain't into that power imbalance.
Literally 2 and a half kids, housewife and a white picket fence dream embodied on two legs with a fucked up abyss hand.
No thoughts, only family. Kinda sees his cult as a family.
This man literally became a prophet to find his sister, this is more than fast and furious levels of family right here.
Would never cheat, if his wife flirted with him while he was drunk he would tell her she had a wife, he's that devoted.
i love him.
Sadly because he has his cult to preach to and lead, he never has the chance to make a family. Loves them so much

Lando is absolutely pan, i've rambled about him enough in Lar's part (lies never enough moth baby)
Herrin has a late wife, visits her grave whenever he has some time off from work.
Hael is very cute when he's in love, literal teen schoolboy crush with LOTS of blushing. His domesticity is only second to Reno's.
Valore is probably completely career focused but was absolutely a flirt when he served under Elnyr tbh. He was ABSOLUTELY a manwhore let's not lie.
Elysandre is the king and sadly has a lot of pressure to produce a heir as the known last of his bloodline.
Danorin is also absolutely gay idc what anyone says

Poorly describing my versions of the Gotham rogues:
Joker: “yolo” in its most dangerous form, def is writing a slow burn enemies to loves fic about him and Batman. Gay and homophobic 💯 The other rogues don’t invite him to pride celebrations anymore cause he’ll keep calling people slurs “as a joke”. Him and Edward have longterm beef, like schoolgirl levels of petty drama.
Harley Quinn: would describe herself as a “girlboss” unironically while committing heinous crimes. tweeted “clowns aren’t funny” after breaking up with Joker (ended up causing a huge scandal). The OG “I can fix him” girl. Is sort of the rogues free underground therapist (god knows they need it) cause they can’t get professional help without being sent to Arkham.
Poison Ivy: Breaking News: Cottagecore lesbian commits mass murder cause her plant wilted. She’s what republicans think environmentalists are. Would get in a fist fight with that vegan teacher cause “plants have feelings too”. Has beef with most of the male rogues, supports ‘kill all men’ without realizing it’s a joke (she prefers ‘kill all humans’ but figured she had to downgrade because the Gotham city sirens are humans technically).
Cat Woman: “OH NO! It appears I’ve gotten stuck backwards in the bank vault step-Bat 😏😏😏😏😏😏, looks like I’m not stealing any more diamonds today 😰😩”. Mad respect for Selina, she just wants diamonds and bat dick, no tragic backstory or complex motivations needed. I personally like to headcanon her as wearing a straight up cat costume (ears and a tail like a true furry) cause it’s way funnier to imagine a sophisticated rich woman dressing up as a cat to steal shit than whatever bullshit DCs up to these days. Trans catgirl supremacy 💎👍
Scarecrow: That one guy who gets angry at people because “Halloween costumes are meant to be scary 🤬😡😑😒”. Doesn’t even attempt to express emotions, is the human embodiement of this emoji: 😐. His presence is more jarring than threatening, his intimidation levels are somehow underwhelming and overwhelming at the same time. The other rogues have collectively decided that he’s asexual under no assumption other than that they don’t want to imagine Jonathan having sex. Overtime Jonathan has become basically fearless (he smokes his own fear gas like vape just to feel something). Jonathan and Harley became good friends when they both worked in Arkham, their dynamic is surprisingly wholesome.
The Riddler: Didn’t get hugged enough as a child and is now making it everyone’s problem. Would hold a bank hostage to show Batman his third grade spelling bee medal. Is the only autistic rogue that gets accommodations in Arkham because he won’t stop bugging the guards. FTM trans ofc (his names Edward Nygma for Christ's sake). He ran away from home at seventeen and faked his own death (his deadname is legally dead lmao). Uses the terms “alpha, beta, and omega male” unironically.
Two Face: “Yeah, I mean, I didn’t wanna blow up the orphanage either, but Y’know the coin said-” The other rogues talk to Harvey as if he’s constantly at his breaking point, which is half true. Harv is a stone cold mf, he’s the rock that’s holding Two Face together tbh. Edward calls Harvey and Harv Jekyll and Hyde cause he’s that original. All the rogues have at least a sneaking suspicion that Bruce Wayne is batman and use Harvey as their little primary source (being ex besties and everything), until they find out Selina and Bruce are a thing of course. No matter how much evidence he’s faced with Harvey will never accept Bruce Wayne is batmam, he’s not ready to consider that one of the only positive people in his life has been duking it out with him this whole time.
Penguin: He’s the rest of the rogues chill gay gangster uncle I don’t make the rules. The iceberg lounge is like the Batman villain equivalent of The Central Perk from friends (aka: its their default place to hangout). Oswald always makes a fuss about them not making reservations ahead of them but at this point it’s just performative. Everyone’s 99% sure Oswald and Edward fucked at some point (Edward always makes a show of flustering Oswald when he needs a loan). Ossie always takes care of the others belongings when they’re in Arkham (he has a special place in his heart for Jonathan‘s crows).
The Mad Hatter: I love Jervis lmao he just really likes Alice in Wonderland and that’s a valid ass villain motivation 👍. One of the smartest rogues but doesn’t get enough credit because of how childish he is. He dresses in kids clothes, not just because he wants to but because he’s small af and can’t fit in shit. In public while the rogues are undercover Jervis usually wears a beanie or a baseball cap (he’d get spotted instantly if he wore his usual, but on bad days Jervis can’t bear to be without a hat). Jonathan and Jervis play chess a lot together in Arkham, and frequently engage in intellectual discussion, Edward tends to be a piss baby when Jon encourages him to do the same, he’s not ready to accept the reality that Jervis can match his intelligence.
Killer Croc: Waylon has a surprising amount in common with Jonathan, they share southern solidarity. He doesn’t travel out of the sewer often so the rogues will occasionally come to visit Waylon there (Edward always makes sure to complain loudly about the smell). Will show immense affection and loyalty to anyone who treats him as human (poor guy just needs a friend ☹️).
Mr Freeze: Literally just dead inside, someone give this poor bastard a hug. Victor stands as the most awkward rogue, he‘s sorta like the odd one out. The other rogues don’t interact with him that often because he’s sort of a party pooper. He’s the straight friend on thin ice, haha get it. Mr Freeze is my sisters favorite Batman villain because she thought the ice puns were funny in Batman in Robin, little does she know I’m embarrassing myself on tumblr in her glory.
Music Meister: So many of the Gotham rogues have horrible childhood trauma and Music Meister is just like “people bullied me for being a theater kid 😩😭💔😔”. In all honesty he’s iconic, in my au universe thingy I have him join the dork squad latter on and he sticks out like a sore thumb for a bit. I feel like him and Jervis would really hit it off though (mind control buddies, ha), although Jervis would always get him to sing Alice in Wonderland songs. In Arkham they have him wear a dog collar thingy and zap him when he sings, he gets bullied for that lol.

Favorite moment: 156 Save - Omori saving Sunny from red space in hikikomori route :')
Idea for a story: when I was first getting into the Omori fandom I really wanted to do this huge fic about how Omori is like... Sunny's subconsciousness and the whole Split in Sunny's mind and self is a result of headspace (which is more than just Sunny's imagination); gradually, whitespace, headspace, and blackspace are all bleeding back together and Sunny and Omori are slowly merging into one being, because Sunny is learning to move past everything, learning to accept the truth and live again, and because of that, he doesnt need the Split anymore :')
Unpopular opinion: Omori isn't always just protecc sunny baby... listen I know for the most part he's been protecting Sunny in the only way he knows how and truly prioritizes Sunny's 'safety', but it's really really hard to overlook his boss battle. i forgive him in the end but still it's like. please no. don't say that. you need a hug. both of you. :(
Favorite relationship: oo o o o g h.... this is a hard one... I think I'm most fascinated by Omori and Stranger's relationship? Stranger is obv an avatar of the Truth while Omori is the embodiment of repression so like... idk they've got a funky dynamic and i love it

HYASHASHA okay no I will elaborate on that a little. Tbh I'm not a fan of "regular" Electraboose at all, because imo they are too... how to describe this... hyper? To make a good pairing? Idk, regular Caboose gives me this highly energetic crime baby energy and regular Electra is highly energetic diva baby, they don't balance each other out very well. OLC Electraboose works because they both feel much more mature to me! CB is just a funky little man who likes to commit atrocities in his coffee break, and Electra is this cranky drama queen who still stomps his foot when he doesn't get what he wants and walks against walls when he's tired enough. They feel a lot more relaxed to me, a lot less hectic. <3 Also, your art made me ship them. Yeah.
2. What are my favourite things about the ship?
Damn, I already answered that in question 1, didn't I? Oh welll, gotta improvise. Starting with my personal tag for them: Mustache train husbands!!! They embody the 80s. Literally. They will absolutely annoy the hell out of everybody around them by calling each other constantly and talking for hours, twirling the metaphorical phone cord. They're also the best at being soft as fuck. OLC Electra was born with sleepy eyes, so he can always give ultra soft looks at his mustached boyfriend, and CB is very soft in and on himself, so it's just the perfect balance. I also love how, by today's beauty standards (although I definitely disagree), OLCB is literally just a Guy. Who's funky as hell. And Electra took one look at him and said "taken" and nobody argued, least of all CB himself. ♥
3. Is there an unpopular opinion I have for this ship?
Other than it's better than regular Electraboose? No, I don't think so.
Electrustity time!
1. What made me ship it?
Okay I put Electraboose first bc by GOD I can't remember right now. I have me and Kate's dms right in front of me when she started shipping it, and the way I wrote an entire paragraph in response tells me that I was a fan of it long before that asjdkasjdk but I couldn't pinpoint the exact moment.
I think it mostly resulted of a long, long train (hah) of thought about Electra basically having no clue what he was getting into with the race and not feeling any real malice against Rusty during the "Clear my Track" scene, because everybody is making so much fuss about this rusty little steam train doing the race (as if he had a chance at all! ridiculous) and there's so much drama about choosing partners and he just wants to do this damn race, for fuck's sake!! (You can tell that I hadn't listened to the OLC recording at that time, where Electra is also very against Rusty racing him, for some inexplainable reason. By then I only knew the versions where CB tells Electra that he will brake Greaseball for him and at this point Electra just goes along with it, because he mostly just wants to get it over with and any help is welcome at this point jskdaskd anyway, I'm getting off point here.) So! During "Clear my Track", Electra often doesn't laugh when Rusty tells him that he's going to race him; his Components do instead. Greaseball does laugh. Gonna steal this from the wiki rq:
Adding the wonderful Toby Poole Electra bootleg to it, where Electra doesn't laugh and does a "come at me" gesture at Rusty when he tells him that he will race him paired with other bootlegs where Electra even waves the Components off so that they stop laughing, I started teetering between "Electra is fucking sick of all the drama and just wants to race already" and "Electra actually respects Rusty". Kate bringing it up really got me rolling (ha ha) though, so thank you @isaterriblebore! ♥
2. What are my favourite things about this ship?
The dynamic is DELICIOUS. Shiny and fancy but absolutely clueless and rusty and world-worn but optimistic and knowledgeable? Sign me the fuck up!!!
I think they would be absolutely amazed about each other and very impressed, as well, and they both have their pride and insecurities. I know that some people see Rusty as the ultimate uwu soft boy, but honestly, this Dampflok calls himself the fastest engine of the world with full sincerity in public, so I think he has a lot of confidence, actually! He just doesn't tend to let it rise to his head so much as Electra does, especially since Rusty is ridiculed for it and Electra isn't. Poppa suggesting that Electra convert to steam at the end of the show was a heavy blow to his ego, so they balance each other out nicely especially after that. Another favourite thing for me is that there's so much potential for angsty stuff, but also so much for funny shit. Rusty trying and failing to teach Electra how to whistle bc Electra is afraid about other trains not liking him because he can't whistle at them. Electra seeing a steaming loaf of bread and going "Oh it's like Rusty!" (because Rusty is squishy and warm). Rusty and Electra becoming partners in crime in their free time and stealing Greaseball's shoes (completely inspired by this lovely photo).
(Short!Electra hc my beloved....) Yeah. They can be soft and silly and vulnerable together and I just like that a lot. ♥
3. Is there an unpopular opinion I have for the ship?
Electra is shorter than Rusty. Fite me fjkasjdkad Other than that, no, I don't think so. Except maybe that Rusty has just as much (or almost as much) confidence as Electra pretends to have XD

As a mdzs/novel canon reader, how do you feel about the roles of Wen Ning and Wen Qing in mdzs vs cql?
I think one of the most important thing (for me) when thinking about how wn and wq are explored in cql is to remember the following two factors:
1. While the actress denied it, it seems that wq was indeed supposed to be a love interest for wwx in cql before fans made a fuss about it on social media: this is supported by the fact she was introduced as a main character in early talks of the series, the actress got the biggest $$ contract after xz and wyb, we got some leaked photos from set showing scenes that were filmed or were intended to be filmed but didn’t end up in the final cut of the series, and the simple reality that wq’s presence in the story was increased significantly (while her impact on the plot remained the same). Tbh that they chose to cast meng ziyi and introduced (and kept) a frankly bizarre (on a thematic and plot level) romance subplot between jc and her is proof enough for me that she was supposed to be a love interest for wwx (albeit a tragic one).
2. CQL fundamentally modified the role of the Wens within the narrative by changing the whole subplot about modao, which then altered the role of wq and wn to a degree, and with which characters they interacted and when.
For me, these had an impact on the overall quality of the storytelling, particularly in regards to wq and her character (under the cut because I don’t know how to be brief).
WEN QING:
1. Even if she had been instructed by the director to play wq as close to possible to the way she was portrayed in the novel, I don’t think Meng Ziyi could have done it; for me, she doesn’t have the right presence, physicality, etc. to achieve a good performance of wq. Novel wq has such strong boss energy; she is high-ranking officer even if she is removed from the fighting, the best doctor, and someone who was in charge of the yiling supervision office, and she’s constantly snapping at people (I love novel!wq.........). Meng Ziyi just does not manage to embody that powerful energy--she has that female lead type of presence, and it just doesn’t mesh with who wq is.
Wen Ning nodded, somewhat embarrassed, “My sister. She’s really powerful.”
She was indeed powerful.
Wen Qing could be considered a famous cultivator of the QishanWen Sect. She wasn’t a daughter of the QishanWen Sect’s leader, Wen Ruohan, but instead the daughter of one of Wen Ruohan’s cousins. Although they were far cousins, Wen Ruohan had always had a close relationship to this cousin of his. On top of that, Wen Qing was exceptional in the liberal arts and studied medicine as well. She was a talent, and thus she was rather favored by Wen Ruohan. She often followed Wen Ruohan to the banquets of the QishanWen Sect, which was why Wei Wuxian found her face familiar. She was a beauty, after all. He had also heard from somewhere that she had an elder or younger brother. But, perhaps because he wasn’t as talented as Wen Qing, not many people talked about him.
2. In my opinion, making the wq a more active agent in the wen plot also takes away part of what defines her arc and character in the novel, and what she represents as a figure within the conflict. Let’s remember, we are only introduced to wq in the novel after Lotus Pier was burned down and jc lost his core--she is absent until then, and that is the point: she is not involved in the conflict. While morally upright, she is someone who passively benefits from the ills committed by her sect and who only takes calculated risks to help reduce the suffering committed to others. She becomes guilty by association despite never actively hurting others or helping wrh’s cause. It feels more organic and complex than the throne-room!threats we see in cql, and having her carry on missions for wrh.
Wen Qing cut him off, “What the Wen Sect does doesn’t represent what we do. We don’t need to be responsible for the Wen Sect’s wrongdoing. Wei Ying, there’s no need to look at me like that. There’s a beginning to all debts. I’m the office leader of Yiling, but I was ordered to take the position. I’m a medic, an apothecary, I’ve never killed anyone, much less touched the blood of the Jiang Sect.”
It was true. Nobody had heard of any lives lost by Wen Qing’s hands. There were always many cases that people wanted her to take over. It was because Wen Qing was one of the Wen Sect’s people whose way of doing things was actually normal. At times she could even put in a few good words for people in front of Wen Ruohan. Her reputation had always been good.

Lan Xichen responded a moment later. “I have heard of Wen Qing’s name a few of times. I do not remember her having participated in any of the Sunshot Campaign’s crimes.”
“But she’s never stopped them either, “ Nie Mingjue countered.
“Wen Qing was one of Wen RuoHan’s most trusted people, “ said Lan Xichen. “How could she have stopped them?”
Nie Mingjue spoke coldly. “If she responded with only silence and not opposition when the Wen Sect was causing mayhem, it’s the same as indifference. She shouldn’t have been so disillusioned as to hope that she could be treated with respect when the Wen Sect was doing evil and be unwilling to suffer the consequences and pay the price when the Wen Sect was wiped out.”
[...] One of the sect leaders spoke up, “What Nie-zongzhu said is quite right. Besides, Wen Qing is one of Wen RuoHan’s most trusted people. You’re telling me she never participated? Well I don’t buy it. Is there any Wen-gao without a single drop of blood on their hands? Maybe it’s just that we haven’t found out about it yet!”
3. Making wq interact with other characters before the qiongqi path incident also makes their motivations harder to understand. For instance, jc having feelings for wq makes his motivations and actions during the aftermath of the sunshot campaign more muddled, imo? In the novel, instead, jc’s unwillingness to help the wen remnants is used to showcase a foil between jc’s and wwx’s understandings of duty/responsibility:
“You burn this corpse right now and return to them all these leftovers of the Wen Sect. That’s the only way to make the subject die!” As Jiang Cheng spoke, he raised his sword again, preparing to attack.
Wei Wuxian clenched his wrist.
“Are you joking?! If we return Wen Qing and the others to them, they’d meet nothing but a dead end!”
“I doubt you’ll even return all of them. Why do you care what kind of end they meet? A dead end it is, then—what does it have to do with you?!”
Wei Wuxian finally lost his temper. “Jiang Cheng! What- What do you think you’re talking about?! Take it back—don’t make me give you a thrashing! Don’t forget. Who was the one that helped us burn Jiang-shushu’s and Yu-furen’s corpses? Who returned to us the ashes that are in Lotus Pier right now? And who took us in when we were chased after by Wen Chao?!”
Jiang Cheng, “I’m the one who fucking wants to give you a thrashing! Yes, they helped us before, but why in the world don’t you understand that right now any remnant of the Wen Sect is a target of criticism! No matter who they are, with a surname of Wen they have committed a most heinous crime! And those who protect the Wen are at risk of being condemned by everyone! All the people loathe the Wen-dogs so badly that the worse they die the better. Whoever protects them is against the entire world. Nobody would speak for them, and nobody would speak for you either!”
4. Adding more screen time for wq and more interactions with other characters prior to/during the sunshot campaign ends up adding nothing in terms of her arc or her impact on the plot. While wq is a secondary character in the novel, she is crucial to the plot: her skills and her agency shape so many crucial moments and events in mdzs. Take away pretty much any scene with wq in the novel, and the events of the novel have to change. However, when it comes to what has been added in cql to make her more prominent in the series, it does not feel like it brings anything of significance to the plot. In the end, what is the point of the hair comb moment? it never sways jc to help or feel really conflicted over not helping the wen remnants? it never changes anything about the way wq acts? jc doesn’t come to wq’s defense at jinlintai the way lwj does. At best, it just adds to jc’s manpain. In the end, what’s the point of having a cute moment between wq and jyl, except to reassure viewers that wq is a good person and cares for her brother (all things we known in the novel in spite of the absence of this scene). In the end, what is the point of spending screentime with wq looking for the yin iron in the cloud recesses, and wwx being suspicious of her, if anyway lwj and him stumble upon it by chance? If wq were the love interest, it would make more sense to just pad up her screen time in the series, and these moments would probably pay off more. But as it is, it just feels very aimless and even at times confusing.
5. i 100% headcanon novel wq as a lesbian and the fact that they even suggest she might have feelings for jc is an attack on my gay rights ):
WEN NING:
1. Gosh I love wn. I think his role in the novel is so important and i have too much to say to end up saying anything remotely coherent. I also have to say that I love the actor they chose. Of all the casting choices, I’d even say it is the best of the entire series in my opinion. He really captures the essence of wn and he looks so adorable. So cute.
2. Overall, i think cql did not change too much in terms of his arc and characterisation (the shy but fiercely protective person, coming to terms with what he lost, finding wen yuan and reconnecting with his history, finding a path of his own instead of following his sister/wwx). However I do find that some of the interactions are more meaningful in the novel. For example, making wwx and wn’s first interaction happen in the cloud recesses takes away the importance of wwx standing up against wn’s own sect members on their own turf. The fact that wwx and wn see each other more in the CQL verse also undermines the weight of wn’s choice and how significant wwx’s actions and words were to him, since he was ready to go against his sect for someone he’d met once. Once!!!! It says so much about wn and what his life was like--and how much impact wwx’s acts of kindness and care could have. If I let myself I would just end up quoting back most of Poison - part 4.Okay, I will just quote this part:
Red seeped through Wen Qionglin’s face to even the bottom of his ears. There was no need for others to beckon him away; he fled self-consciously. Wei Wuxian chased after him, “Hey, don’t run! Uh… Qionglin-xiong right? Why are you running?”
Hearing his name called from behind him, Wen Qionglin finally stopped. Head hanging low, he turned around. It seemed as though shame rippled from his head to his toes as he stammered, “… I’m sorry.”
“Why are you telling me you’re sorry?”
“You… You recommended me… but I made you lose face…”
“How did it make me lose face? You haven’t really shot in front other people, have you? You were nervous?”
Wen Qionglin nodded. Wei Wuxian continued, “Have some confidence. Let me tell you the truth—you shoot better than everyone in your sect. Out of all of the disciples whom I’ve seen, no more than three people are better in archery than you.”
3. I do wish wn as the ghost general was scarier and more violent in cql, but they tamed all of the horror/violent/gory aspects of the novel so it was to be expected. I just love contrasts.............

can u give a non spoiler pitch about shadow and bone why it's worth it, also is it gay in any way
S&B is for two types of people: people who like dark high fantasy shows and people whose favorite characters are the literal embodiment of “be gay, do crimes.”
Tbh I’ve never been a big fan of Alina’s storyline, but the show’s version of her story is a well-done improvement of the books. I’m really here for the Crows (Kaz, Inej, and Jesper). These three are fantastic and have the moral compass of a gutter rat. They’re criminals from the slums who really only care about being paid (Inej is the exception...she has morals and dreams that don’t involve money), but they’re also so much more complex than that. Their storyline in the show is actually a sort of prequel to what happens in the books about them (which are set after all the events of the S&B series), so the show hasn’t yet really explored them. But it will get there.
Okay, to answer your question of whether it’s gay.....YES. Jesper is gay. Spoiler: he hooks up with a stablehand onscreen (well, as much of onscreen as PG13 allows). Disclaimer: most of the ships are straight, BUT there are exactly ZERO ship wars in the fandom because everyone agrees with canon.
Long story short, watch it. You won’t be disappointed.

001 olympe/solene please!!! (also i know i haven't answered in 8 years but please bear with me, i haven't forgotten i'm just very late)
Thank you! (Also it’s fine; I was just a little worried I’d finally scared you away!) The following thoughts might be slightly rambling, given my family’s doing our daily rewatch of Toho!1789 and Maniaque just came on, thus short circuiting my brain.
when I started shipping it if I did: I seem to recall a conversation between you and @couldntgiveafox some ages ago where you were discussing alternative 1789s, and I believe I stumbled across it in my fall to 1789 Hell. I don’t think I really started actively SHIPPING it until I was writing Pour la Peine and the (still a WIP) Modern AU where they go to Disneyworld, since it showed off more how they would WORK as a couple. (Yes, really. In my defense, there’s something about Solène and Olympe working together to get Artois stranded on “It’s a Small World” that warms the cockles of my shipping heart.)
my thoughts: I think they have a lot of potential as a ship; I would REALLY love to have seen more of them in canon because I think that they’d have had a lot more potential than our canon ship. (Not that that’s SAYING much, but…) The two of them have two very different ways of dealing with things that really make them complement each other well. Like, Solène has a much more direct way of doing things; she probably had to shut down most of Ronan’s fights with the other kids in their village when they were younger, whereas Olympe…can handle herself, obviously, but she tends to prefer sidestepping it if she can and tends to prefer using the gun only as an absolute last resort. And Solène and Olympe both…fill in the gaps, with each other? Like, Olympe’s a woman who everyone sees as this simple little governess who can be walked over but has a spine of steel beneath those stays, whereas Solène is a woman who presents herself as being basically untouchable and unbreakable, but she has a lot of vulnerability beneath the surface.
What makes me happy about them: Solène has this blunt, rough edge that really works well against almost everyone, but the second that Olympe enters the room? She melts. Even if she’s terrified of what exactly that means and trusting someone again. She’s basically the embodiment of “I’ve only had Olympe for a day and a half, but if anything happened to her, I’d kill everyone in this room and then myself.” And Peyrol. Even if he’s not in the room and had nothing to do with it, she’d still kill Peyrol for good measure. And for Olympe, she has someone who’s genuinely in love with HER and would be willing to bend over backwards for her. (It’s not that I dislike Antoinette or that I’m even particularly criticizing her, but I do think that she can be insensitive when it comes to Olympe’s crush right until the very end when she lets her go and that sometimes, she takes advantage of Olympe’s feelings without realizing it, causing Olympe to get into trouble. See: Je Suis un Dieu.) Like, Lazare and Solène would never ADMIT it, because fundamentally they have way too much between them, but they have more in common there than they’d ever admit.
Finally: BLESS the Toho for giving me, like, five seconds of interaction between them. It might not have been much, but THEY TOUCHED HANDS. While watching Solène’s brother being brutally shot by his boyfriend, but hey, it’s not the WORST first date idea. And Solène’s CLINGING onto this girl she’s just met in that scene, after rushing herself in front of Peyrol’s line of fire to do it.
What makes me sad about them: Obviously, the lack of interaction between them, even though, on the positive side, it means the show can’t ruin it for me. Solène is hard as a character to write, because all three Solènes are written so very differently from one another that it’s hard to get a grip on her, especially since it’s obvious that the French really didn’t…CARE about her, as a character, and that also means that trying to get their dynamic can be hard. Like, I still feel after all this time that I don’t have them down as well as I have L/R, which is something that I’m always trying to rectify.
Also, from an in-universe perspective: I think…Solène is very like her brother, in the sense that she doesn’t see HERSELF as inherently inferior or incapable of love (the one thing no one has EVER accused the Mazurier Siblings of is a lack of confidence), but that so much has happened to her that she kind of takes it for granted that this isn’t going to end well. Our girl’s canonically lost her brother and father, she’s PROBABLY lost her mother (I mean, unless she’s just…living as a hermit somewhere since Ronan and Soléne ran away or left Papa Mazurier to become a famous adventuress, I think it’s a safe assumption), and it’s safe to assume she’s lost at least 2-3 siblings, if not more, and…as much as I’m against the idea of the Tragic Sex Worker, she’s also probably seen Things in her time on the streets. If nothing else, then sex work was very much a transitory job for many women, who would take it up in off seasons in-between other jobs (or marriage, for some women), so there are probably plenty of women who she knew and tried to get attached to who just…moved on.
And I think that Marie Antoinette’s ghost is always kind of going to be there, in the background, even as Olympe moves on from the full force of her old feelings. And Olympe has her own issues when it comes to loss, not just with Ronan (who was a friend if nothing else) and her mother (if we’re going with the musical-canon where Charlotte du Puget’s been dead for awhile), but also with probably seeing Louis-Joseph die in front of her.
things done in fanfic that annoys me: WHAT FANFIC? There’s so little of it available that it’s kind of impossible for me to find ANYTHING to really annoy me. The thing that annoys me when I’M writing them is that there’s this…odd tendency, with femslash, for things to be sanitized and clean and saccharine, as opposed to M/M and F/M ships. And, on one hand, I DESPISE that mentality, but on the other hand, I find that I’ve internalized some of that, even though realistically S/O have…so much that they could bicker over. If they wanted to. So I try to keep at least a realistic level of conflict in their relationship, without reaching R/O or even R/L levels.
things I look for in fanfic: Existing is always a lovely thing.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Olympe/MA is always going to be a tragic crush for me; I’m not sure if it’d have worked in the long run as an actual RELATIONSHIP, but I’d be perfectly comfortable with Olympe being happy. Or accepting Artois’ offer, biding her time in London while slowly poisoning him so that she can retire in an obscene amount of wealth when the new king of France “tragically” dies only a few months into his new reign.
Even though I’m pretty attached to Olympe being a lesbian and Lazare being gay and/or ace, I’m also not OPPOSED to them marrying each other as a matter of convenience post-canon, though…obviously. After the Takarazuka and Toho productions, there are going to be…issues with that one. (Lazare is incapable of being with someone when he hasn’t at least tried to kill their father.) Matthieu Carnot and Camille Lou in the original cast had HELLA chemistry with one another, and I’m not entirely willing to toss it all away.
And for Solène…I’m not sure I’d go with ANYONE in the main cast. My main headcanon re: Solène and sexuality is that she’s bi, but the whole “Betrayal by her idiot of a brother” thing has really put her off the idea of being romantically involved with dudes for an extended period of time. Sexually? Sure, for the money involved. It’s her JOB, but she’s not going to go for anything that requires trust. Lucile is the obvious alternative, but I’m not sure how Lucile’s upper middle class upbringing would work with Solène and her profession, and the entire business with the engagement +…Lucile’s ultimate fate would work. (Also Lucile’s part in The Scene in the Toho version…it hasn’t put me off her as a CHARACTER, I still love her very much, but…it’s made me…less keen on her with Solène.) I also crackship her with Marie Antoinette. Marie Antoinette gets all the ladies in the main cast.
My happily ever after for them: In the canon verse? They leave Paris, either getting out of the country or quietly running into the country, where they can live in peace without the Reign of Terror getting them. They establish a domestic life together, where both of them learn to trust again, even as Solène keeps her own funds Just in Case, because some things are a little harder to move past than others. Lt. du Puget knows, but he’s been too traumatized by his own experiences with the Bastille, as well as too grateful to the Mazuriers for all they’ve done to raise a fuss, and he becomes like a second father to Solène, with Françoise being a sister and partner in crime to her. Solène doesn’t lose track of her friends in Paris and visits them from time to time, even as she gets used to middle class life, and she never entirely loses her fire. They both die of old age, many, many years after the Revolution (because, as we all know, Olympe does not die at the end, and there has never been a time where she died at the end; it is her destiny to outlive the rest of the cast with her girlfriend.) And then, in the afterlife, Solène gets at least one slap in on her brother before they’re one big, happy family again. Because he does deserve it, tbh.
Out of canon, I would honestly love to see a world where Solène/Olympe and Lazare/Ronan could have co-existed with each other as a family, albeit an insanely unorthodox one. I could see Olympe and Lazare having a marriage of convenience, with both of them having their own sections of the house that are just theirs, and with sex not even being a consideration. (Solène takes it more as a matter of course and the best possible option, even if she doesn’t LIKE Lazare; Ronan runs off and spends, like, a week crying somewhere before they can get him calmed down enough to explain.) Like, their wedding night is spent playing cards in bed until they can sneak out to their separate rooms, and at some point Ronan’s in-between them, drooling on Lazare’s shoulder while Solène glares daggers because if he hurts her girlfriend or her brother, she will not HESITATE to destroy him. Everyone knows that they’re gay AF and that a former under-governess to the royal family is sleeping with a former sex worker, mainly because Artois never shuts up about it (because if he can’t have Lazare under his thumb and he can’t murder the hypotenuse, he’s at least going to do his best to make his life miserable), but, does it matter? No. What are they going to do, not invite Lazare or Olympe to one of their salons? The horror, the horror. One year, for her New Year’s present, Ronan gives Solène a pair of earplugs so she doesn’t have to hear some of the ungodly sounds that come from his and Lazare’s side of the house. Everyone’s happy.
who is the big spoon/little spoon: See, my GUT instinct is Solène for big spoon, since it gives her a place of security without her feeling pinned in, but also I love the thought of Olympe sometimes taking over, nuzzling into Solène’s neck and having Solène wake up and being like “Holy shit, this is real” even years later.
what is their favorite non-sexual activity: Taking walks together, reading. I like to think that Olympe helps Solène learn how to read (which is one of the areas where I feel like they differ from R/L. Even though I think Lazare would read out loud to Ronan, I’m not sure he’d go through the trouble of TEACHING him, especially since that’s…giving Ronan some serious power as far as being able to page through any of Lazare’s papers.) Sometimes, Solène just prefers to hear Olympe read out loud, with her absently putting her hand on Olympe’s arm as time goes on and she relaxes, since Olympe has a very bright, expressive voice that suited her well when she was an undergoverness, and even if she doesn’t mean to, she finds herself taking on different voices for different characters, which makes for an entertaining reading experience,. The two of them also help each other with their daily toilette, getting each other’s hair and clothes prepared.
This? Is an Olympe innovation.

From the time she was born, Alessandra LeBlanc was too smart for her own good. As the younger of the LeBlanc sisters, Alessandra couldn’t have asked for a better childhood. While she grew up in a rural part of Louisana, her father was a famous jazz musician and moved the family to New Orleans when his band started catching a big break.
Alessandra loved living in New Orleans. There was so much culture, history, and folklore surrounding the town that she couldn’t help but get swept up in it. She would listen to stories about voodoo, Marie Laveau, ghost hunting, and of the incredible food. She and her sister, Alison, took the most pleasure in roaming the streets in the afternoons, listening to music pour out of the restaurants on Bourbon Street. Mardi Gras was a party that resulted in their mother cooking and baking up a storm.
Family was everything to Alessandra. First, her mother Rebecca, a wise and kind woman with soft eyes and an even softer heart, who worked as a cleaning woman in the local hotel. But she could bake, and she could play the piano. She’d often play the piano for Shaw, the patriarch of the household, who was a wizard on the tenor saxophone, and whose career in music was supposed to drive them from the slums to easy street. Then there was Alison, who embodied all of the best possible qualities of both parents. She was every bit of the perfect older sister to Alessandra– the guardian, the protector. They were happy, and family always came first.
Tragedy struck Alessandra over the course of two years, one after the other. Alessandra never saw either of them coming, but shortly after she turned twelve years old, she and her parents buried her fifteen year old sister after a terminal illness caught too late, to the point where nothing more could be done. Alessandra felt so lost in the world after that, and it’s where she started to flounder. Her dad stopped playing jazz. Her mom started resorting to take out. The streets of New Orleans had lost its magic, but the family wouldn’t be there for much longer.
When Katrina hit, Alessandra was in eighth grade, and her parents made the wise decision to move away from Louisana and into lower New York State, instead. Alessandra’s mother had family in the greater New York area, and it seemed like a good decision at the time. This was when she started going by Sage instead– new life, new name, right? Any hope of making something new for herself faded away. Unfortunately, they moved into a community where children had been friends since they were in diapers, and a sullen, moody, pink-haired child wasn’t exactly on the top of everyone’s list to be friends with.
Between Alison’s passing and being displaced from her home, Sage never quite bounced back from the charismatic, know-it-all that she once was. No more would she run up to her teachers and ask if they wanted to hear about a math proof, or a fun fact. She kept to herself and lost herself in a world of books. Other people’s stories distracted her from her own, and she was found getting in trouble in class for reading books when she should have been paying attention. Even when Sage would be randomly called on, she could always come up with the right answer. Sage had the curse of being smart and being bored.
This was why nobody was even remotely surprised when Sage graduated as the valedictorian of her class, with a full-ride scholarship to Columbia University. She majored in Criminal Studies with a minor in Women’s Literature. Part of Sage wanted to go ahead and pursue a law degree, but people aren’t really her thing. She’s much better off behind the scenes, analyzing data and helping to solve crimes in that manner.
Sage is heavy– mentally, emotionally. She isn’t friendly, and she isn’t kind. She’s not like her mother and never learned enough from her sister on how to face the world with a smile. Instead, Sage relies on her ability to push people away in order to get by. One might think that she wouldn’t thrive in an environment like Acuppella Cafe, because it is a place that thrives on community and togetherness. The cafe has given Sage just that– a community of people who understand her (and plenty of those who don’t) as well as some of her best friends in New York City.
Pets: An adopted Bengal cat named Nefertari. Sage is convinced that this cat is a reincarnation of the famed Egypitan queen. She’ll bend over backwards to tell you that, too.

Haley Sterling
Roommate. Sage can’t stand her, if she’s being completely honest, because Haley is far too peppy and happy for her own good. Sage thinks she’s a six year old child trapped in an adult body, and she has no patience for it. Sage tries to avoid her roommate as much as humanly possible.
Scout Solano
While these two don’t seem to have much in common on the surface, they’ve fallen into a benefits situation. Calling them friends might be a bit far. Sage thinks Scout is absolutely gorgeous and has no trouble admitting that, but she’d much prefer Scout with her mouth shut. Or occupied.
Dani Harper
Unlikely best friends, and it’s a well-known that Sage would do anything for Dani and vice versa. Sage adores Dani’s vibe and finds it easy to be around her. Even though she’d state otherwise while under oath, Sage considers Dani to be her lifeline.
Rachel Berry
Sage and Rachel bonded over having similar diets, and woefully looking inside the Acup pastry case. The two will often go out to lunch together and share their exercise habits and dietary tips.

Aradia: Very tall. She has so much hair she deems it too difficult a prospect to comb it down, making it very poofy. She/Her
Tavros: Average height for a troll his age, which is actually kind of short compared to his much taller... friend... gamzee. He actually spends a lot of his free time writing sick fires for their slam poetry sessions, but effectively forgets them and resorts to the same subjects each time. HOLY S H I T MAN THIS IS THE QUESTION I’VE BEEN WAITING MY WHOLE LIFE FOR
i paused my episode of the adventure zone to answer this question
so uhhh basically lyss gets me a lot? like. i think a small part of it comes from the fact we’re both around the same age, we’re seniors, we’re sorta in that “oh my fucking god” mindset when it comes to high school but like
she cares a lot. sometimes it’s not blatantly obvious and sometimes we have our moments where we upset one another - but what friendship doesnt have those moments? the important thing is we apologize and move on and we don’t let things tie us down.
i feel safe opening up to a lot of my friends, but lyss is one of the few that i always go to first because - for one, she’s in my timezone and i don’t have to worry about too much - she’s there and she knows i’ll be here for her when she needs it too. it’s not a relationship of only giving - we give and take from one another and we don’t let things boil over to the point where we’re hurting from one another.
i don’t feel shitty when i talk to lyss - and if i do, she tends to help me through my stupid depressed thoughts and realize that i can move on from this. she’s such a loving person for the people she trusts and cares for, but she doesn’t take shit if you’ve hurt her friends and that really means a lot when i’ve gone through a lot of friendships where i’ve been sorta left behind once they get tired of my mental bullshit. she’s here.

lyss has a fucking baller music taste. she made this playlist a while back and sometimes i listen to it since its rly rly nice and she talked to me abt how she makes her playlists and like. im a music goblin who just throws shit into a playlist and throws it on shuffle every time i listen - but she puts so much care into the little things and she makes playlists like mixtapes and they’re so so so fucking rad, man

Hell yeah now we're talking about queer hcs, that's good stuff!! How important are their identities to each ego? Like, how explicit or casual are they about it, do they own/wear pride stuff, etc - Kata
I accidentally rambled and this got super long (again, when do these not), so under a read more it goes!
I think Jackie, Angus, and Anti would be the most explicit about it! Jackie owns two masks, one pan themed and one polygender themed, that a fan made for him, and he fucking adores them. He doesn’t wear them while fighting crime, but he’ll wear them to events and stuff! He also owns pins and shirts and flags and stuff and has them up in his room!
Angus, while he doesn’t own shirts, does own some trans and pan buttons and pins, and even a couple pairs of gauges! I think most of the egos would own gauges themed to their identities, so ye!
Anti totally owns an agender-themed shirt that says “Gender? No thanks!”, and he’ll sometimes wear agender-themed gauges, but he doesn’t really flaunt it out in public like some of the others do. I also like to think he owns a flannel with the agender flag colors on it that Jackie bought for him for Christmas one year.
Robbie’s already the physical embodiment of the ace flag concerning his color scheme, so he doesn’t really have to worry about that, but I think Anti would’ve totally bought him a shirt with the nonbinary flag colors printed on it that says “Who needs gender when you’re dead?”, and he and Anti go out and wear their themed shirts together when they go to pride events and stuff! Other than that, tho, Robbie is actually pretty casual about his identity. It makes sense to him, and that’s really all that matters to him.
Chase would totally own a snapback with the bi flag on it tbh. He’s very proud to be bi, and it took a lot of courage for him to come out! The first person he told was Stacy back when they were in high school, and while they may not be on the best of terms anymore, she’s never berated him for his sexuality or anything and was/still is actually super supportive of him, despite them getting along anymore.
Marvin’s more casual about his identity, and he has done the “Move I’m gay” thing many times in different situations just bc he can. He owns a rainbow cape that Chase got for him for his birthday one year partially as a joke, but Marvin fucking loved it, and he’ll even wear it to some of his magic shows, since it basically matches the flashy and peacockesque style his magic shows usually have! He owns a few shirts and pins, too, and he even made a mask similar to his performance mask with the demiboy flag colors on it!
Schneep doesn’t really find a reason to be explicit about his sexuality, but he does own a few buttons Jackie gave to him at the last pride event he went to, and he’ll wear them when the egos manage to drag him to one.
Jameson and Shawn are the most casual about their identities, bc while they’re super happy to live in a time where they don’t have to hide that part about themselves, they also never considered it crucial to their general selves, if that makes sense? Especially Shawn, since he basically gives zero fucks about what anyone else thinks of him. I think Jameson would own a cute little genderqueer pin to put on his lapel, though, and sometimes Shawn will be seen with an agender and asexual button pinned to his hat, but nothing much else outside of that!

I love your blog!! Do you have any headcannons for what it would be like if the Gangsey went to a pride parade?
Thank you!! in honor of Brooklyn Pride being yesterday I’m gonna finally finish this!! ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ be gay do crimes the gang goes to Pride wooooo
well first of all, it’s worth noting that the ONLY frame of reference i have is Pride in NYC, which is, well. Pride-Pride in Manhattan is A Lot. very crowded, very noisy, very festive but just an absolute onslaught of people. It can be a hit or miss experience if you’re someone with serious anxiety, PTSD, hearing loss… etc. Brooklyn Pride on the other hand is still busy but more of a street fair, it’s like one huge block party that stretches for a half a mile and then ends in the evening with a small parade made up of local organizations and advocacy groups and things. I think something casual but still energetic like that would be more enjoyable for everyone, so I’m gonna assume the gang goes to a Brooklyn-like Pride event!
I know immediately that Blue, Henry, and Noah have an absolute ball. Blue would probably like seeing people’s outfits, and she would appreciate the relative lack of corporate appropriation. Henry would be a smash hit with everyone they meet because imo he embodies the kind of attitude (and social performance) that can make anyone feel like they’re at a party, so he’d come out of something like this with lots of new friends. He also delights in buying the tackiest Pride merch he can find (semi-ironically?). Both Henry and Blue jump on the excuse to get dressed up as well but tbh, i can’t help but feel like it takes on this competitive edge… who can come up with the best Pride #look…. Of course they have different personal styles shaping their outfits so it might end up being a draw of sorts?
Noah meanwhile is doused in glitter and repeatedly wanders away from the rest of the gang. Once he comes back with a drink in a pineapple and once they find him just off in a side street teaching skateboard tricks to 5th graders. The kids actually keep finding him throughout the day, which is how Noah ends up with his own “munchkin roller gang” by parade-time. he has a blast!
Gansey, Ronan, and Adam are a little trickier for me to get a grip on. I think that ultimately they’d all have a great time though! Pride is a great place to let go of one’s artifice, which all three of them deal with in one way or another. I can see Gansey, Adam, and Blue all having conversations at the organization tables along the sides of the street. Gansey is the worst though, he stops at every single table to chat with folks about whatever issue they’re focused on – or he would try to, eventually everyone else drags him away because he’s taking too long – and even though it’s because he’s partially slipped into Polite Politician’s Son mode, he’s also just really eager to learn things! This is a world he knows next to nothing about and he wants to discover more! The people working the tables undoubtedly find him charming and delightful, and are more than happy to answer his questions and ply him with fliers. Adam, similarly, wants to Know Things, but both he and Blue are probably more selective in which groups they talk to (do they both end up at the ACT UP table though? yes ✊).
I think Ronan would have a bit of a moment. I mean, I think he prefers not to be a moment-having type, but it would be impossible to look around at all the happy queer people of all ages, all the straight and gay families out with their kids, the moms re-pinning their teenagers’ flag-capes and the 4-year-olds running around with rainbow bandanas, and not have a moment swept up in the okay-ness of it all. He spent all that time thinking this was another thing that wasn’t right about him, and actually it’s normal, actually it’s okay, actually it’s worth celebrating. I think for Adam too, it would feel a little bit like finally being able to exhale a breath he didn’t quite know he was holding. We get caught up in the party life of Pride and the rainbow merchandise and the Grand Event of it all, but at the end of the day, this is what it’s all about. Ronan still doesn’t let Henry and Noah re-outfit him in entirely rainbow clothes they find tho.
Also everyone is dying a little all day long because they’re completely surrounded by absolutely gorgeous people and no one in the gangsey is straight, thanks for coming to my TED talk.
