I feel like Jackrum and Polly both do “funny as long as they were useless, and safe as long as they were funny” thing. Jackrum plays up the jolly fat man routine to manipulate people into getting what he wants and discouraging people from further investigation, just as Pols acted like the ditzy bargirl to avoid abomination and convince people let their guard down. I think they both got it instilled in them for similar reasons, being a girl in an overly conservative and militaristic country. They both use it in the regiment when dealing with the higher ups.
This isnt as articulate as I would have liked but whatever.

Some of Pratchett’s characters who are an influence on Fred Thursday (yet another post on this sorry ;-) )
- His Grace, His Excellency Duke of Ankh and Commander of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch  Sir Samuel Vimes (aka Sam Vimes)
- Sam Vimes when disguised as Sgt John Keel
- Sam Vimes’s younger self (clearly also an influence on Sam Thursday, I am like 99% certain was named after the morseverse’s own Sgt Vimes who was Thursday’s mentor in the 1930s.)
(This means that Thursday is partly based on a character who at various times and in various ways is based on Javert, Valjean, and to a lesser extent Marius from Les Miserables.)
- Sergeant Jack Jackrum of the Borogravian Army
(Which means REDACTED DUE TO MASSIVE Monstrous Regiment SPOILERS but I am SO HAPPY ABOUT IT. :D )
There are various other Endeavour characters that I think Lewis had fun with getting some playful Pratchett influences on (in the writing of Max, Jakes, and Bright especially, but I even see some parallels between Morse and Carrot), but Fred is clearly the main one. :)

LMAO this description of Vimes from Monstrous Regiment, somehow not true but also not false
He was some kind of wizard, said the woman opposite. They said he could see things happening everywhere, and lived on raw meat. They said he had secret eyes.
(the raw meat bit was an intentional rumor started by Reg Shoe)

16, 25, 35, 36, 50! for the book worm asks :D
16. Favourite trilogy?
I have to be honest, I can’t think of the last trilogy I read (for fiction I tend to gravitate to long, expansive series with no through line besides the characters). Lord of the Rings, of course. But besides that, I’m still reading the Jacobite Trilogy! I know I’m going to go “Oh how could I forget that One Major Life Changing Trilogy!” after I post this lol
25. Favourite middle grade book(s)?
The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel — Michael Scott!! That series had EVERYTHING I wanted as a kid! Magic, immortals, mythology, history, historical RPF, ancient gods, kickass action sequences!!
35. Least favorite trope in your most favorite book genre
Probably whenever a character just… knows everything… Even if they weren’t there, they somehow get the details from someone who was. Over explaining, I suppose. For historical fiction, probably “historical record? what historical record?” Just takes me out of it, or when the author has characters from like 1830 talking like they’re from 2005.
36. Your absolute most favorite character(s) from any book you've ever read.
Whatsitsname (Frankenstein in Baghdad), Maladict, Sgt. Jackrum (Monstrous Regiment), Stephen Maturin and Jack Aubrey (Aubreyad, I couldn’t separate them), Horatio Hornblower and William Bush (Hornblower novels; can’t, won’t separate them), Keith Windham (The Flight of the Heron), Genly Ai (TLHOD), Death and Susan Sto Helit (Discworld books), Teresa Moreno (Sharpe series)
50. What kind of book have you never read but always hope to find at some point in the future?
Aaah… I don’t honestly know! There’s only two ways I ever start a new kind of book which is someone suggests it to me often enough or I walk into a bookstore and find a tatty old book underneath the table and it becomes my obsession for 10 months.

you know what I'm gonna be deeply unsubtle on the character bingo. Jean Tannen.
Tumblr media
It's been a while since I was Fully Into the Gentlemen Bastards series but Jean very much was my blorbo while I was there. I never ventured into The Fandom per se (if there is one), so idk if everyone else is wrong about him - possibly!
The keysmashing and the free space both relate to wanting to steal his gender and also my personal headcanon that he was in fact afab and as an adult sits somewhere in the Sgt Jackrum region of butch/trans/"I don't really care about gender but this is comfy and convenient" ambiguity

on that note... i think accents are kind of like names to blackwell, in that he's been through so many of them that none of them feel "real" to him anymore.  even the accent in which he spoke his first words doesn't feel any more natural to him than all the rest.
which is just another indicator that like.  he's been so fake for so long that in many ways, there is nothing underneath the fakeness.  there is no authenticity bc there is nothing to be authentic to.  blackwell has no real name.  he has no real voice.  he obliterates himself and reconstructs himself in other images, and he’s done that for so long and so well that there are parts of the genuine self that he just doesn’t have access to anymore.

Discworld for the fandom ask game if you want!
Thanks!
o The first character I ever fell in love with:
Magrat, I think. She resonated with me because I was thirteen and dorky and also owned a lot of essential oils and the like.
o A character that I used to love/like, but now do not:
Nobody really, although Magrat is now somewhat less compelling to me? Her syrupyness in the early books can legitimately get a bit grating at times. Took my hat off to “limp what?” though.
o A ship that I used to love/like, but now do not:
I’m less fussed about Carrot/Angua than I initially was. It’s fine, but the whole “werewolf = dog” thing is a bit off-putting and some of the conflicts between them never really get resolved. Again, it’s fine, but imo “fine” is sort of all it is, really.
o My ultimate favourite character[tm]:
Oh god no. Let’s go with top five
1) Nanny Ogg! She’s so funny and good-humoured but has this steely edge underneath it. I want to be like her when I’m 80.
2) Sgt Jackrum. I love the way he takes care of his soldiers, but doesn’t coddle them or sugarcoat what they’ll have to deal with. And his climactic entrance (”I notes you have my little lads before you, sir! I’m hearing they are in a spot of bother, sir!” makes me well up every time. It’s just perfect.
For the record I headcanon him as a trans guy. It’s really not my place to try and weigh in on where he fits into the whole Representation debate, but there you have it.
3) Death. He likes cats and has weird dad hobbies, what’s not to like? Also his confusion about human stuff is endearing.
4) Moist von Lipwig. I love his energy and cheekiness and crazy schemes. Probably the most fun character, alongside Nanny
5) Commander Vimes. Bit of a surly bastard in a lot of ways, but generally does his best to be morally upstanding. Highlights include his kindly interrogation of the palace maid in Feet of Clay and, of course, “WHERE’S MY COW???”
o Prettiest character:
Oo this one’s interesting, given the medium but also the fact that we’ve got a smorgasbord of official illustrations, fanart and the odd film adaptation to go with.
So I tend to fancast Moist as a Casanova-era David Tennant, so he’s definitely a contender. Adora Belle tends to look like Christine Addams in my head (watch the Bitches episode of Pushing Daisies, you’ll get it) so same goes.
In terms of film/TV adaptation characters, Michelle Dockery’s Susan wins absolutely hands down.
In terms of the Kidby illustrations, probably Miss Alice Band
o My most hated character:
Strappi. There’s a lot of unpleasant characters knocking about, but he’s unpleasant in a particularly gross, visceral, slimy way.
o My OTP:
Has to be Vimes/Sybil, I think. You don’t often get to see middle-aged characters fall in love and then get to follow their story, and the subtle little ways they show their affection throughout the series are really lovely.
o My NOTP:
I saw a thing about Susan/Teatime once which nearly scarred me for life. In terms of canon(ish) relationships, I was never all that sold on Susan/Lobsang. It just felt a little too convenient, and I didn’t see much chemistry between them. More of a “nah” than a notp though.
o Favourite episode book:
1) Feet of Clay
2) Going Postal
3) Hogfather
4) Witches Abroad
5) Monstrous Regiment
o Saddest Death:
The usual guy. He gets pretty sad sometimes.
o Favourite season/least favourite season:
Let’s say favourite division, shall we?
Or maybe not because it’s haaaaaaard. Like the witch books deserve a mention because they got me into the series and the characters are so compelling, but then there’s Moist, and the Watch, and the Death books... aargh.
Least favourite is easy though: I never really got into the Rincewind ones.
o Character that everyone else in the fandom loves, but I hate:
Nobody stands out. Maybe Rincewind. Hate’s a strong word, but his books... just never really been for me.
o My ‘you’re a piece of trash, but you’re still my fave’ fave:
Nobby is really the epitome of this, right? he’s a filthy gross little devil but he’s our filthy gross little devil.
o My ‘beautiful cinnamon roll who deserves better than this’ fave:
Probably Agnes Nitt. She sort of just gets jostled around without much say in the matter a lot of the time, which has got to be frustrating as hell.
o My ‘they’re kind of cute, and I lowkey ship them, but I’m not too invested’ ship:
Polly/Maladict. They’re a compelling pair, and I can see their relationship going somewhere post-MR canon, but I’m not majorly invested.

112 Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett adapted by Chris Hainsworth dir Kevin Theis for Lifeline Theatre. When we were picking this season, we noted a definite war theme with KA and 2C, and KA was all men, so we thought having a 3rd show that fell in with that theme, but had a strong female presence would make sense. So I proposed Monstrous Regiment. I sent the book to old friend Kevin Theis, who directed Fair Maid back in the day, he said yes, cast the show with comedic powerhouses and we were set. A mostly stand alone discworld novel (Sam Vimes and the Watch appear, but I removed them from my adaptation) MR is the story of Polly Perks, whose brother Paul has enlisted and disappeared in one of Borogravia’s endless wars, so she cuts off her hair, puts on some breeches, shoves a bar towel down them, and enlists under the name of Oliver. In addition to finding herself in the same company as a Vampire, an Igor and a Troll, she also discovers that all the young “lads” in the company, are women in disguise for various reasons. Under the battle weary cynical tutelage of the infamous Sgt. Jackrum and the deliberately optimistic leadership of Lt. Blouse, they become infamous themselves after humiliating the Crown Prince of Slobenia and pursued across the country as they attempt to storm the keep and rescue their allies. This is probably the best thing I have ever done or been associated with. The perfect team of artists working to the best of their ability came together on this one and put on a show that was a hit critically and financially. I could take up another seven posts with this show alone and only scrape the surface. So I’ll just say thank you. To the cast, crew and everyone who came. This is the standard by which all the other of my plays will be judged. #retrospective #2014 #lifelinetheatre #monstrousregiment #terrypratchett #kevintheis #chrishainsworth #pollyperks #oliverperks #igor #igorina #sgtjackrum #ltblouse #theduchess #borogravia #slobenia #tonker #carborundum #jade #mildred #lofty #maladict #maladicta #wazzer #princeheinrich #monocleandmustache #strappi https://www.instagram.com/p/B8OhwkFJaU6/?igshid=1tntp4t2z6qgk

Having one of my not-infrequent re-listenings to the audiobook of Monstrous Regiment and continually spotting all the blatant or possible influences of the book on Endeavour (at least some of which will have been deliberate, given Russell Lewis is a massive Discworld fan and the whole "Sam Vimes was Fred Thursday's mentor" (and is an influence on the character) thing. :-)
Some (to me) obvious character parallels:-
Sgt Jackrum strikes me as another important influence on Fred Thursday (the mighty, caring, admirable in many ways but not always honest or righteous protector, "you are my little lads and I will look after you", the NCO-ish officer wrangling, etc. <3 ). If you know much about how Monstrous Regiment goes it may be obvious quite why this parallel delights me. :D
Bright is older and wiser than Lieutenant Blouse, but I think Blouse is definitely one of the Discworld "Ruperts" (ie posh officers) who are an influence on Bright, or an anti-influence. (I mean, Reginald Bright is the anti-Ronald Rust, very specifically, and I think there's a little bit of Captain Tilden there.) Both Bright and Blouse are easily underestimated, have considerable but not obvious courage, are very intelligent but take a while to settle into leadership positions, are infuriated by bullies. And save the day with less than impressive-sounding knowledge or roles (number skills; the traffic department). And then Blouse gets fake-nicknamed "Tiger" at one point and.... :D
Jakes would like everyone to think he's like a working-class version of Maladict. He is vastly more like a cross between Tonker and Lofty, which gives me enormous feelings tbh. <3
all Discworld Igor(ina)s give me huge Max DeBryn vibes. In a very good way in both cases. :D Some parallel dialogue at one point IIRC.
None of the parallels are so close as to make the Endeavour characters not themselves! But I think they are there, and as with all of the references and crossword clue-type wordplay in Endeavour, they add an extra layer. :-)

For the character ask meme, Discworld (general) or Discworld (your fave cast) if the first one is too big
ooh this is a good one. i . . . was going to do both but i can’t pick a favorite cast? damn. so i’ll do general, monstrous regiment, and watch because i am a disaster :|b
GENERAL.
The first character I first fell in love with: susan sto-helit! because she is beautiful and scary and my wife. also hogswatch was the 2nd discworld book i read, right after the light fantastic, so it made a big impression on me tbh.The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: man there are a few of these. i think granny weatherwax is definitely one, although i don’t know how i was surprised by that. brutha DEFINITELY. i would die for brutha. The character everyone else loves that I don’t: tiffany aching. i just didn’t care for her books much im sorry world. i want to try and read them again though to see if an older, wiser me with less internalized misogyny likes her more. i also really don’t care for rincewind as a character, although he is a funny like . . . concept. sight gag. thing. The character I love that everyone else hates: i honestly don’t know who everyone hates in discworld, but i love everyone so i mean. The character I used to love but don’t any longer: man idk? no one i think? i used to love agnes more than i do now but other than that . . .The character I would totally smooch: susan. angua. sally. like most of the ladies in this series period. The character I’d want to be like: P O L L Y P E R K S im putting that here tooThe character I’d slap: a lot of them tbh. any of the upper crust of a-m. anyone who hurts otto.A pairing that I love: otto/wdw/sacharissa is real good. also sally/angua(/carrot).A pairing that I despise: vimes/vetinari causes me abiding anguish because like isn’t it enough to erase a canonical marriage in favor of i guess hate fucking but then also HURTING SYBIL RAMKINS BEAUTIFUL FEELINGS? LET THEM BE MCFUCKING MARRIED AND IN MCFUCKING LOVE. i’m ride or die for the vimeseses.
MONSTROUS REGIMENT.
The first character I first fell in love with: pollyThe character I never expected to love as much as I do now: jade, blouse, jackrum, the major from the court martial whose name ider . . .The character everyone else loves that I don’t: n/a i love everyone (except strappi) (but no one loves strappi)The character I love that everyone else hates: i dont know?????? i love everyone!!!The character I used to love but don’t any longer: i love EVERYONEThe character I would totally smooch: mal honestly because i have bad taste. also polly. The character I’d want to be like: still pollyThe character I’d slap: blouse tbhA pairing that I love: mal/polly obviously but also like: tonker/lofty aka gay cultureA pairing that I despise: breaking up tonker & lofty
THE WATCH.
The first character I first fell in love with: vimes. vimes vimes viMES VIMES VIMES VIMESf rom the first second of guards guards with him lying in the gutter, my forevercopThe character I never expected to love as much as I do now: carrot... i should hate him but i love himThe character everyone else loves that I don’t: hmmmm i’m kind of neutral towards cheery but even with that i’m fondThe character I love that everyone else hates: i dont know....... i definitely love detritus a ton but i fyou don’t love detritus you are a heartless monsterThe character I used to love but don’t any longer: i used to like nobby and sgt colon more than i do now but i still love themThe character I would totally smooch: angua & sallyThe character I’d want to be like: uhhh hm. angua has a lot of emotional Issues but she’s also really cool so angua. The character I’d slap: carrot, sometimes. vimes, sometimes.A pairing that I love: sally/angua(/carrot). i have really mixed feelings about angua/carrot though i have to admit because they seem to keep butting up against this sense of angua feeling kind of restricted? which makes me sad, and definitely makes her sad, which is sad. also, sybil/vimes (BANGS GONG)A pairing that I despise: nobby/anyone
