Y’all in the American SW and west Mexico better check the national hurricane center and your weather for this weekend and next week.
Hurricane Hilary is about to make landfall and that whole desert area is supposed to get a years worth of rain or more. Death Valley is supposed to get twice the annual rainfall. Severe winds, massive flooding, and landslides are all strong possibilities.
This is gonna get ugly. Please spread the word. This is a majorly anomalous event and people may be unaware of the threat headed their way.
EDIT AUGUST 19th
Hilary will hit the Baja peninsula this evening at a category 2. It will arrive in southern California as a tropical storm on Sunday evening before weakening and moving into Nevada as a tropical depression.
THAT SAID: for the Americans here, even if the storm is “weak”, I want to emphasize that the main danger is rain. We are most concerned about flooding. If you are in an area at risk for flooding, take appropriate precautions as per your city or state officials’ or the noaa’s directions. Even if you end up only being mildly inconvenienced, it is better to be prepared. Go to a friend or relatives house if you live near a body of water or a very low-lying area. Make sure you have water bottles and nonperishable foods. Keep your pets indoors. Don’t wade or drive into puddles.
Anyways, here’s some maps from the NHC

And here’s a link with information in Spanish.
AUGUST 20 FINAL UPDATE
Updated info from the NHC website.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Newsom also issued a state of emergency for parts of Southern California. Widespread flooding is expected.
Good luck y’all

just got absolutely walloped by 2 or 3 (the delineation of separate storms is hard) massive, SEVERE storms
I think I counted a total of like, 7 tornado warnings in my general area? with one very small one (not small as in “not intense”, small as in “there is a very clear path of danger”) directly on my immediate surroundings and ofc that includes where I Currently Am. there were two more ~10 miles away, one ~30 miles away, and the rest were within 55 miles
there’s a fourth wave of storm on the way but it’s currently unclear whether it’ll come north enough to hit me specifically, but it is very likely to cause further damage (especially through flooding) in other nearby areas at least.
obligatory clarification that tornado warnings mean there is technically a tornado even if it doesn’t touch ground.
over 15k people had their power knocked out about 50 miles from me, which was over 20% of that power company’s coverage, they’re expecting it to take at least a matter of hours to fix, and it’s already been at least 3-4 hours since the first ones lost power
there is major flooding in several areas, including major highways, within 75 miles of me and countless trees down, including some that have fallen on houses, and many many on roads, several of which are preventing the restoration of power in some areas because whole parts of towns and apartment complexes etc are entirely inaccessible
tonight is a living hell, and I’m in one of the areas that’s been least affected (out of the areas affected, obv unrelated areas are fine)
local rumor spreading right now is that there have been fluctuations in the jet stream due to climate change that set us up for this, im too distressed to do any fact checking on that right now
if any crowdfunding initiatives come out of this I’ll make sure to share them

This is a picture of our garden taken today.
We're growing tomatoes, jalapenos, and onions.
Lets' see if it's still there after Tropical Storm Hilary is done passing through.

It is currently storming with a flood watch in Sacramento. I have a flight to LA today at noon, I literally cannot miss it, I need to go home.

If these airline bastards cancel my flight I swear to god, where are the spirit pilots when you need them. I will still fly in this weather no hesitation.

*********advance warning for tornados, other TWs in tags but here's one at the top if you don't have the tornado tag blocked*************
Tornado on the ground, warning on the TV, rain pouring down outside. This is all too familiar living in Tornado Alley but it still makes me queasy to see the sky pea soup green, smelling the ozone and petrichor and whatever else makes that distinct smell that's wafting about outside, in my house, inside my head.
May 20th, 2013, an EF5 ripped through my hometown, destroyed the gym behind the school I was in, almost dropped an industrial air conditioner from the hospital it destroyed on top of the quadrant of the building I was sheltering in. It landed feet from the side of the building. The sound when it passed by us was deafening. There was a roar like a steam engine at full tilt, and suddenly it was like thousands and thousands of basketballs were being dropped on the roof all at once. There was a gas leak, and we evacuated. I finally got picked up and it took a full two hours to drive what should've been a half mile to the shelter at grandma's.
An ef 2-3 just passed to the south of us by like, a few miles, looked like it was gonna go right over us. I don't like how it feels to be twelve again. 2013 was the worst year of my life. I attempted suicide seriously, spent overnight in the hospital and a week in the psych ward before insurance ran out. This was in late January, and then in May the big one hit, it was over a mile wide. It put cars plural on top of what was left of the hospital. Is it an exaggeration to say I almost died? It feels wrong to the people who actually got hurt or died. Like I just locked eyes with death, not close enough for a dance. But all that was between me and a mile wide EF5 was maybe a hundred and fifty yards, at absolute most, and a concrete block wall? But maybe I'm not being grateful enough that I got that much. I don't know... Sorry for the rant, I guess.

When I try to explain my anxiety to people and give different examples and such it always ends up being like:
I realise it sounds incredibly stupid, not logical, and very childish but that's how my brain works, I am constantly trying to appease a chaotic god that lives in my skull. If I succeed, life is good, if I fail, it feels like a hurricane category 1-4. And right now its riled, and I'm trying to avoid hurricane category all together, by giving it little doses of change, so maybe it'll just be a severe or moderate storm.
I'd rather avoid this:
