Easier and faster materials microstructure analysis through human-AI collaboration

A research team led by Dr. Se-Jong Kim and Dr. Juwon Na of the Materials Data Management Center in the Materials Digital Platform Division together with a research team led by Professor Seungchul Lee of POSTECH has developed a technology that can automatically identify and quantify materials microstructure from microscopic images through human-in-the-loop machine learning. The research results were published on 15 August in Acta Materialia. Microscopic imaging systems visualize material structure information at multiple levels, from the nanoscale to the mesoscale. Quantitative analysis of microstructure is the process of extracting structural statistics from microscopic images. However, due to the complexity and diversity of microstructure, there have been many limitations for humans or AI to perform this alone.

So hi again, lovelies!

As mentioned before, I’ve been getting a handful of requests for a sequel to my SoulmateAU!Wonwoo, and I am really keen in pursuing this idea as well! But I’ve hit a roadblock right from the get-go;

I CAN’T, FOR THE LIFE OF ME, DECIDE WHO SHOULD BE THE NEXT MALE LEAD.

The premise of the sequel will follower our main female character *ahem, spoiler alert* attending a support group for people that have lost their soulmates, following her breakup with Wonwoo. There, she meets some new friends, and maybe, just maybe, she may find happiness again.

CANDIDATE #1: CHOI SEUNGCHEOL

A terminal illness has taken the life of his soulmate and significant other of two years. The dullness in his voice unnerved you as he shares his story. AI speeds up development of new high-entropy alloys

Developing new materials takes a lot of time, money and effort. Recently, a POSTECH research team has taken a step toward creating new materials by applying AI to develop high-entropy alloys (HEAs) which are referred ti as 'alloys of alloys.'

A joint research team led by Professor Seungchul Lee, Ph.D. candidate Soo Young Lee, Professor Hyungyu Jin and Ph.D. candidate Seokyeong Byeon of the Department of Mechanical Engineering along with Professor Hyoung Seop Kim of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering have together developed a technique for phase prediction of HEAs using AI. The findings from the study were published in the latest issue of Materials and Design, an international journal on materials science.

Metal materials are conventionally made by mixing the principal element for the desired property with two or three auxiliary elements. In contrast, HEAs are made with equal or similar proportions of five or more elements without a principal element. The types of alloys that can be made like this are theoretically infinite and have exceptional mechanical, thermal, physical, and chemical properties. Alloys resistant to corrosion or extremely low temperatures, and high-strength alloys have already been discovered.

summary: all seasons round, taejin finds himself not so much a minimalist but more of a “relaxed” vibe. at least when he’s with himself, he’ll spend hours in his office, drinking coffee, reading scripts, etc. though his interior is pretty much minimalist, it’s due to his person interior designer that has taken taejin’s cues and made it into a reality. still, he’s drawn to muted lighter colors than the stark contrast of darks. playlist summary: in his home, taejin rarely plays any hyper kpop songs, or western edm that booms and makes his house into a party house. instead, you’ll have him play some jazz that he can’t even name the title of, or some ballads that he enjoys listening to. it’s the serene tranquility and the echoes of the vibrato in the ballads that lead him to play things on repeat. of course, there are also some “soft indie” songs in the mix — so for the most part, you can assume taejin just plays the softest songs in his house when he’s in need of filling the silence. warnings: none
