Taemin leaving SM; a retrospective rant from a severely uneducated and overly caffeinated fan.
I have thoughts about Taemin leaving SM and by extention Onew too. Might as well drag Minho and Key into this.
Since this is majorly about Taemin, let's talk about him first.
Taemin & SM (pre-NGDA era)
Taemin has been with the company for 16 years, closer to 19 if you count his trainee days. As an older shawol (LLO-era, got me whipped BAD), it was seriously out of the blue that Taemin would be the first to debut solo. SM at the time (i.e in their prime) was a vocal powerhouse and I genuinely thought Jonghyun would be the first one to go solo. SM made the right decision dedicating time and resources in letting him shine and 'Ace' was a phenomenal debut album for Taemin and really stamped that 'Taemin vibe/sound' we all know and love' Generally speaking SM not the best for promotions/scheduling, but the company still had their shit together when 'Move' came out, it felt like it was everywhere and surpassed the noteriety Guilty had achieved. I feel like when Taemin does variety shows, up to now, Move was always the most referenced and remembered act, even amongst the junior idols, that he did and thats because SM did go hard on promoting that song and picked a quiet month to do that comback in.
Taemin vs SM (during/post-NGDA era)
Somewhere along the lines, SM really dropped the ball with promoting Act 1 especially during Taemin's 'Criminal' comeback. They heavily prioritized their newer groups and suddenly their legendary acts were getting shafted with poor promotions and what felt like less dedicated management and resources. I recall, SM postponed the release for Criminal, squashed Taemin in Super-M activties and focused on their new acts while simultaneously over working them (honestly Mark has had such a hectic few years). My internal speculation/assumtion is that, SM figured that acts like SuJu, EXO, SHINee, GG and RV and solo/ duo units, wouldn't need as much dedicated promotions because they are iconic acts and they are fully dependant on fanbases to generate the buzz. Which leads me to my main hypothesis that after a few years of being active, SM really does not care about an artist anymore. Mind you artists that put them on the fucking map to begin with. SM won't double down on these artists because they believe they can't appeal to a younger audience. With the shitshow that was the Criminal promotions. SM really didn't do any better with 'Advice'. Pinning aespa's comeback a day before was a low blow instead of focusing on the talent that's about to go into the military, if they are aware enough to give Taemin a mini comeback so his relevancy sticks throughout his service, why damage it with an aespa release (that felt like it was to tactically avoid facing off the BTS release later than month) and basically doing NOTHING bar announcing pre-orders. Then we enter the 'Guilty' era. Which as we saw was a hit, but mainly because SM capitalized on the power of social media trends, placing Taemin in VARIOUS online contents and slowly dropped related media during winter. I mean we are still not over his 'Guilty' era, the Metamorph concert still has us at a chokehold. I 'd like to think that Taemin became more vocal in what he wanted and expected out of SM when he came back. Obviously the priority to them is/was SHINee and that's fair. DCM did really well with promos (althoughlike most shawols would say, LSM did have a major part to play with that). HOWEVER it was their 15th anniversary comeback last year and I feel like SM treated it like it was just another comeback instead of a major milestone. There were no interviews or press releases for Hard, when events were happening, it felt like it was gate kept to just local fans, like it made me feel like I was living under a rock because it was so last minute and I was not aware of anything. I want to believe that just because SM did an okay job now, excuses them for the last 3 years. What's worse is it's undeniable, Taemin lives to perform and it's no secret he sets some high goals and standard for himself and probably the toll 1) not getting to preform Guilty in GDA, despite wanting to and 2) probably not getting a solid backing for touring globally, despite very vocal fan support. I am not sure if anyone saw that SM forecast for the first two quarters of 2024, but it genuinely feels like Taemin knows that him and SHINee will not be a priority after promotions are finished. I hope I am not dense enough to assume that obviously SHINee has spoken about this privately and internally for a while now. It's really something you can't avoid talking about. Taemin has spoken to his hyungs, people in his circle inside and outside of the industry. Hopefully he is well informed and supported and it seems definite that SHINee is still active as a group.
Key vs SM.
Someone has already mentioned it but if anyone was leaving SM for creative freedom, I genuinely thought it would be Key. 'Bad Love' was an amazing release and Key fought with SM to release with his own brand/aesthetic. Because Taemin's imminent departure is so publicized, SM might be keeping the talks with Minho and Key super under wraps and trying to offer a btter deal. Although recently, bar Good and Great, SM has been using Key as a 'Variety' idol than an actual singer, which sucks because Key is super talented and if SM doesn't recognize that star power now, good luck to them. Also apparently, Kany is signed with BPM? I know she is close with SHInee in general, but I would assume it'd be Key joining her ya'know?
Minho vs SM.
Imma put it out there, the promotions for 'Stay for a Night' was lackluster? I feel like they treat solo Minho and SHINee Minho as two separate entities. Like yes there is a dualism of being a group preformer vs solo preformer. But on the rare occasion SHINee does get promoted Minho seems to get more attention, but as a solo artist, I don't feel the same love for his solo promotions. I hope Minho gets to write and contribute more, which I believe he does in the background. If he does stick to SM, I pray they open other avenues of artistry, primarily, he does really well with his acting roles and yes it really helps that he does fit the 'K-drama ML' look.
Onew vs SM
I feel like Onew gets the short-end of the stick out of the rest of SHINee, never mind that the man has the voice of an angel, but again, he is another one that SM never bothered to market right. It kind of make sense that he would want to leave the company and seek ones that would expand his career inside and outside of singing and while the one good thing SM did recently is make sure Onew was healing and taking care of himself, recent SHINee promo activities feels like they are treating Onew's break as a hush hush 'taboo topic' Honestly, bring back the era where our idols would randomly disappear during promotions because they were casted to be on-stage again. I am still forever clinging onto Onew singing opera, because despite him not being trained for that, he has the talent to do so. It'd be nice to hear him produce his own music, or give acting another shot.

Lee Taemin has been a K-pop idol for more than half his life, and has embodied innovation and ingenuity throughout his career. The 30-year-old began making music at 14, and has cemented himself as the industry's ace.
Taemin debuted as a member of group SHINee in 2008 and began work as a soloist in 2014. He is also a member of K-pop supergroup SuperM.
At his core, Taemin is a visionary dedicated to his craft. He constantly strives to challenge himself, pursuing new concepts and different angles to his artistic identity with each release. His work is hard to qualify, with the artist describing it "Taemin-cliché."
And "Guilty", his latest offering, sets the stage for a new era.
"Preparing for this album, I feel like it's a fresh start," he told USA TODAY.
Taemin pulls back the curtain on 'Guilty'
Tumblr media
Taemin's fourth mini album "Guilty" released Oct. 30. The six-track EP is the artist's first solo release in two years. His last EP "Advice" in 2021 came before he enlisted for South Korea's mandated military service.
The atmosphere of "Advice" felt as if it closed the curtain to a period, said Taemin. As a result, "Guilty" acts almost like a reintroduction to who Taemin is as an artist.
"Making too much changes felt like it's too risky, but I wanted to take that risk if there was an appropriate track ready," he said.
"Guilty" proved to be that risk worth taking, serving as the helm of a mini album that presents new aspects to Taemin, while also strengthening his established skills.
In the EP, Taemin traverses various moods and tones, journeying through guilt, heartbreak, melancholy and love. Through this EP, Taemin wanted to create a "color that covers what I have been doing in my career."
'Guilty' encapsulates Taemin's artistry
youtube
The concept of "Guilty" took inspiration from the book "Erotism" by Georges Bataille. "As an artist, it is my job to be more appealing and more attractive. I wanted to understand what attracts other people," said Taemin.
The book presented Taemin with scope on this notion. His delicate, compelling vocals are the enticement with hypnotic and sharp choreography completely pulling you in.
"I want to introduce who Taemin is through the performances," he said.
Taemin reflects on growth over the last 15 years
Since debut, Taemin has come into his own. He started at very young age and has grown and evolved not only to become an accomplished creative, but also a humble human.
"People learn a lot from experience," he said. "I tried to build my own identity and challenged myself with diverse concepts, and it’s interesting to see that it became my own color."
He also heavily values the relationships he's fostered along the way.
This responsibility is something Taemin carries with him. Often referred to as the "idol of idols," Taemin has been an inspiration to many in the industry.
"I also looked up to someone else as well and I never would’ve thought that I’ll become one," he said. "It gives me faith in myself because it’s one of the proving moments that my decisions were correct."
Ultimately, Taemin hopes to break barriers and limitations through his art.

Shippers and Akages are fighting over "ace duo" on twitter and i saw a tweet from KTHs saying "taehyung is the only ace of the group and he's the nest vocalist of the group" with hundreads of likes and when i say these people are never going to get off their high horses?? Like man's literally a sub vocalist in the group and his stans calling him the best in group. Mind you they asked taehyung what is something difficult he realised doing solo or something like that and he straight up admitted that singing the whole song by yourself is difficult cause when he's in the group he can easily rely on the members and doesn't have to do that much smtg and here his stans.
There's also two threads i saw Cause they were dragging jm into a tweet so one thread was made by a jkkr and other by a tkkr the jkkr one was with jkk on charts and the tkkr retaliated that jkkrs' thread with a tk thread was about likes on tweets and people that joined lives and how much Shipper tag was trending i mean imagine you're calling your fav a ace and you're using likes and and tags mention to retaliate his chart relevancy with his husband?? Like do they not feel embarrased? Oh the tk thread was made by dionysustkk, a pjms posted ss of them since loose head dinosaur has me blocked
TH is serviceable in his roles, nothing exceptional. He does what he needs to do in the group but calling him an ace or the only one is a leap and a bound. lmao.

⭐BTS 2023 - 2025 Outlook - Oracle and Tarot Reading
Tumblr media
[This reading covers the currently foreseen potentials from 2023 to 2025 for all members of BTS. This reading contains collective energetic analysis and individual personal outlooks for all members.]
Reading Performed: January 12, 2023 Posted: January 14, 2023
Tumblr media
For this reading, I wanted to keep it simple as there are not any important things happening that could influence the collective, and this reading is meant to cover the time period between all seven of them going through and coming out of their mandatory military service, which is intended to be complete by the end of 2025. With this, I’ve just done an energetic observation of the current and recently passed states of being for the group and individuals, and have also done an energetic outlook observation for the group and individuals in 2025. Here, we can begin with the group’s projection and outlook.
On the left side, this set represents the group's last energetic projection when they were all together as a unit. The centerpiece is The Poet, which is about creative and honest expression, as well as this sense of timeless transition and personal evolution. In this context for them, this card came with this feeling of release and a tinge of grief for what was being released. It’s as if when they initially separated, as in when Jin went in for his military service, they weren’t letting go of Jin, all seven of them were letting go of their lives up to that point, who they were, and who they knew each other to be. With this, and leading up to Jin’s departure, that deep and personal questioning around who they are, what they want as individuals, and what they feel they can achieve on their own was bubbling up in all of them and for the most part, the answers came for all of them within the realm of writing, producing, and performing.
This is a piece of The Poet’s description for reference: “When The Poet's energy is present, there is a call for deep honesty and reflection, for seeing the big picture within the little one. The Poet rides effortlessly between the personal and universal. It’s possible that others may not seem to listen or care about The Poet’s work, but do not be discouraged. The words of The Poet ring true for centuries to come, soothing the wounds of despair and violence that captivate our world. The Poet’s work is never finished. Find your voice, and trust that the wind will carry it.”
Around The Poet, there are four sets of cards to help elaborate on and display areas of focus or significant projections from the main state of The Poet. At the top, there is the Page of Pentacles with the 2 of Pentacles, which connects down to the left side with the Ace of Pentacles. These three put a lot of attention on money, finances, resources, and connections, and the assessment of these things for the sake of planning things out going forward. This can be in relation to planning out a certain budget for solo production, performance, and advertising with the company, or this is more about thinking ahead about what their careers will look like at the end of their service and getting things in order for whatever “yes” or “no” they’ll face when they come back.
Full reading with individual outlooks for all 7 members on bluemoonpunch.com!

Gooooood morning, I'm here to send you numbers 1, 2, 7, 10 and 13 from the Happy Together ask game for Yara and Ace, my beloveds. Hope you're doing well!
tysm for the ask!!! I am obsessed with these two fr (also tagging @oneirataxia-girl to share the brainrot heheh)
(ask game here!)
This got long so I'll put the answers under the cut!
1. What are your OTP’s love languages?
In terms of receiving, I headcanon Ace as a words of affirmation sort of guy-- we all know that between Garp and Dadan and all the adults in his life that Ace didn’t receive a lot of reassurance about his self-worth growing up. The only time he was probably ever praised was when he brought home dinner for the mountain bandits, and he definitely enjoyed that one time when Makino remarked on how well-behaved he was for her, so getting that sort of verbal affirmation helps chase away the doubts he feels about whether or not he deserved to be born in the first place. As for giving, Ace is always surprising Yara with little gifts he finds on his solo missions/adventures or on the islands they visit together. He just loves making her smile.
Though she may come across as a little distant and give off the occasional ‘go near me and I’ll bite you’ vibe, Yara actually loves being touched and held and getting that skin-to-skin contact with the people she trusts and cares about. She basically was never hugged or given much physical affection for the vast majority of her life, and has some pretty severe abandonment issues, so she’s very touch-starved. The first time Ace hugged her, she didn’t quite know how to react, but all she knew was that deep down, she never wanted him to stop. In terms of giving affection, Yara shows her love through acts of service. She might grumble about Ace leaving his stuff lying around, but she always picks it up and puts it back where it needs to be, and makes sure that he has clean clothes and enough food/water to last whenever he’s going to be away for an extended period of time. Whenever Ace falls asleep in the middle of a meal, she’s always patiently waiting with a napkin or a cloth for when he comes to again.
2. Is your OTP a battle couple? How do they work together?
They’re both on one of the strongest crews in the One Piece universe serving under a literal Yonko so they’d definitely fit the battle couple description! (Yara is technically second-in-command on 2nd Division under Ace, so they end up side-by-side in combat a lot). Now the fun thing about them working together in battle is their devil fruit powers. Yara’s Tōka Tōka no Mi (Pass-Pass Fruit) means that she’s basically untouchable to physical attacks, barring seastone or a strong application of haki (or the Yami Yami no Mi), and Ace’s Mera Mera no Mi, being a Logia, means essentially the same thing for him. So Yara doesn’t have to worry about accidentally hitting Ace with her sword (her devil fruit might give her an excellent defense but it has almost no offensive capabilities, so she has to make up for that with swordplay) and Ace can go wild without worrying about burning Yara. Being faced with them in combat is to endure both their terrifying powers and combat prowess as well as their (mostly Ace’s) insufferable flirting.
7. Do they plan on getting married? Who proposes? What’s their wedding like?
Oh, Ace was probably thinking about marriage even before he left the Moby Dick to chase after Blackbeard. He aims to live without regrets, and he’s found someone he wants to spend the rest of his life with, so why wait? (Yara probably doesn’t think much about marriage, but if Ace asked, she wouldn’t say no). In alternate universes where Ace manages to avoid his unfortunate canon fate, they get married shortly after Marineford, after they’ve recovered from their injuries. Ace wanted to come up with an elaborate proposal plan and spent weeks crafting something, scrapping it, and annoying the hell out of Marco in the process. In the end, Ace and Yara are probably doing something simple like looking up at the stars and talking late into the night and he finally just blurts it out unprompted. (Yara is a bit surprised at first, but she eventually responds with a smile and a “Yes, of course I’ll marry you, you wonderful idiot.”)
The wedding is kind of chaotic, but in the best possible way. It was one of those things where it was supposed to be a small wedding (at Yara’s insistence, she really did not want to make a big deal out of it), but more and more people kept getting added to the guest list out of concerns it would be rude to not invite someone, so the event turns into a bit of a who’s who of the pirate world. Whitebeard’s entire fleet is invited, as are the Straw Hats because of course Luffy wouldn’t miss his brother’s wedding for the world. Curly Dadan and the mountain bandits also come, and Dadan spends the entire time ugly-sobbing into a handkerchief. At some point, Shanks’ crew stops by and brings a fresh round of booze with them. Yara begrudgingly (after many long discussions) allows Ace to extend an invitation to Mihawk, who surprisingly shows up. They find a nice uninhabited summer island for the venue, probably one under Whitebeard’s protection. If Whitebeard is alive, he officiates. If not, Jinbei does. Ace definitely cries a bit at the altar, which makes Yara tear up as well. (Neither of them probably ever imagined finding someone who would love them this much). The celebrations last for a solid week, but partway through, Ace and Yara sneak away on Ace’s striker to start their honeymoon early. Afterwards, Ace takes every possible opportunity to refer to Yara as his wife. Saying it aloud never fails to make him grin.
10. What’s their sleeping arrangement? Who falls asleep first?
Ace can fall asleep anywhere, at any time, so Yara has had to learn to adapt to that. Whenever it happens, she just shifts around and tries to make them both as comfortable as possible until he wakes up. He pretty much always falls asleep first and will actively seek Yara out whenever he wants to take a nap. Ace’s devil fruit makes him the perfect person to nap with, so Yara almost never turns him down. It’s not an uncommon sight on the Moby Dick to find them curled up somewhere, having a rest.
13. What do they love most about the other?
For Yara, loving Ace is like loving the sun-- he’s so bright and warm and passionate and all-consuming, but what she loves most about him is his kindness. He can befriend almost anyone and actively helps others even when it doesn’t necessarily benefit him to do so. (This is the man she watched spend days crafting a very large hat for a giant just to give him some protection from the elements, after all). Ace touches the lives of everyone he encounters, commanding such loyalty from his first crew that they were willing to come back and try to rescue him after he was defeated by Whitebeard, risking annihilation from a much stronger crew just to get their beloved captain back. She counts herself lucky to have been drawn into the orbit of such a bright, wonderful, absolute sweetheart of a man who brags about his little brother fifty times a day and manages to maintain his cheerful demeanour despite how much the world might hate him for the blood that runs through his veins. When Ace turned his kindness towards her, how could she not fall in love with him?
Yara’s beauty might have first turned Ace’s head in her direction, but that wasn’t what held his attention there. He appreciates her steadfast loyalty to her crew and her sharp wit, but what he loves most about her is her honesty. Yara says what she means and means what she says, so he can always count on her to be straightforward with him. He was absolutely terrified of what she might think upon finding out he’s Gol D. Roger’s son, but when she smiled at him and assured him it changed nothing, he knew that she meant it. Whenever he has his self-doubts, he knows he can come to her and that she won’t just coddle his feelings, but will truly and honestly reassure him of the value that he brings to the world and to the lives of everyone around him. He trusts her opinion more than perhaps anyone else’s and feels like he’s found a partner who truly sees him for all that he is. His heart is in her hands, and he’s certain that when she says she’ll protect it with all her might, that she means it.

It’s not like Kiyoomi has practiced this. Not with another person at least. He’s not a setter and is more than happy with that fact. He’s a spiker, always has been and always will be.
But drunken bets are not things to be taken lightly. At least, not this one.
Like most things, it started with Atsumu. Him and his big mouth are the two things that primarily get Kiyoomi in trouble. It’s the whole reason they started dating in the first place. But this bet wasn’t about who could make a better boyfriend or who could make the best onigiri blindfolded. Atsumu opened his mouth and levied a direct challenge to Kiyoomi’s core, “I bet I can be a better spiker than ya can be a setter.” His words were slurred and face was pink and Kiyoomi laughed and laughed. He has vague memories of them making out on the dance floor of the club until Inunaki and Meian forced them to go home because they were stumbling over each other and everybody else so badly. Kiyoomi woke up with Atsumu as a dead weight on his chest, a killer headache, and a vague memory of a challenge.
So, he got to work. During solo-practice time in the gym, moments when Atsumu was in the locker rooms or showers with the rest of the team, times when Kiyoomi was home alone he worked on overhand ball touches and added more lunges into his workout routine. He doesn’t remember anymore why he didn’t want Atsumu to know at the beginning, probably something along the lines of embarrassment of being bad at trying something for the first time (barring the brief times during youth training camps).
That was months ago. He feels more confident handling the ball like a setter would even though it still feels foreign. It’s a fun side-project. A hobby. It was never supposed to be serious. He was never really supposed to set to another person. Not really.
He’s already in position under the ball though. Everything feels like it’s slow motion.
Fifth set. Game point in favor of the DESEO Hornets. If the hornets get this point it's game over and the Jackals have a zero percent chance of proceeding to the championship for the first time since Atsumu joined the team. The Hornets won the first two sets, and MSBY eked out a win for the third and fourth.
It’s all down to this. If they can save this, it’s Atsumu’s serve next. The Hornet’s libero has been struggling the whole game to pick up Atsumu’s hybrid. It’s a small chance, but it’s there.
The set-up is messy: a mean setter-dump that has Atsumu diving for the ball only because he’s aware of the trick. It bounces off his hand weird, sending it high but with a wobbly trajectory towards Kiyoomi. It’s enough for him to spike off of with any hope of success, but his body is moving regardless.
Kiyoomi’s distinctly aware of Iizuna’s and Atsumu’s eyes on him but he doesn’t even have a moment to care as he lines his body up underneath the ball—not in a position to spike, but in position to set. His mind is blank, only the sound of his own breathing in his ears. He doesn’t know if it's from his own practice or the years of watching and following Atsumu, but his body moves like he’s done this a million times. The ball kisses his fingertips and Kiyoomi sends it in a beautiful arc across the court, directly into Atsumu’s palm—a quick neither of them has ever once practiced.
The ball lands with a resounding /thwack/ just inside the lines in the back right corner, completely unchecked. Everybody had been prepared to block Kiyoomi’s spike, not expecting him to set it instead.
The whistle blows. Point to MSBY. Atsumu stares at him from across the court, hand clenched in a fist, stars in his eyes, and an awed grin a mile wide. Not done yet, Atsumu can only nod and accept the ball that’s thrown towards him for his serve.
Silence. A whistle. /Bam/!
The crowd picks up a frenzied cheer as Atsumu makes his fourth service ace of the match. Kiyoomi’s losing, but he doesn’t even care anymore.
Score: 14-14.
SIlence. Whistle. /Bang/! The ball ricochets off the libero’s arms and into the press tables.
Score: 14-15.
One more.
Silence. Whistle. The ball is live! The libero manages to finally get his hands under this one and gets it to Iizuna. It’s not a particularly pretty pass that sends it over the net and Inunaki is able to easily pick it up. Kiyoomi is already moving into position, a fierce smile on his face wild enough to garner a fully committed three-person block. Sloppy.
Kiyoomi can feel the smug satisfaction radiating off of Atsumu as he instead sets it to Bokuto, coming up from the back line. Bokuto trills triumphantly as he smashes the ball down, it glancing off Iizuna’s foot before rocketing out of bounds.
Score: 14-16. Match to MSBY.
The whistle blows and the stadium erupts.
The team descends on Kiyoomi and he’s too tired and sweaty and high on endorphins to even care. Atsumu reaches him first, tackling him to the ground.
“Where the /fuck/ did you learn to do that?” He’s screaming before swooping down and kissing Kiyoomi like his life depends on it. “Holy shit!” He emerges for air and is screaming again, voice mixing in with the rest of the team as they celebrate and pile on Kiyoomi too.
Kiyoomi thinks it’s the happiest he’s ever been in his life.

Ren, why is the blade so bad?
ok. ok. im in the headspace now. here we go
why the blade was bad as a mechanism for character growth and plot momentum: an analysis by ren vldkeith
allow me to remind you of keith's character in voltron: legendary defenders. we are first introduced to him through the words of other characters, lance and commander iverson. iverson heralds him as a larger-than-life, ridiculously talented pilot with an antisocial streak and authority issues. this tracks with keith's official introduction, wherein he is attempting to break into garrison property, alone, to save shiro, his only personal connection. then we have lance, who characterizes keith as his rival; given what iverson said, however, we know this to be false, and thus lance's opinion on keith says more about himself than about who he is describing. both of these keith-related pieces of dialogue, together, serve one purpose: to establish keith as a talented loner. he's an ace pilot, a hermit, a military maverick, and a never be hurt again archetype. okay? okay.
the character arc keith began by joining voltron as part of a team was overcoming his chronic lone-wolfism and learning to trust, love, and have fun with others again. he's already "the best pilot of his generation"; any skills he has to learn on that front are in the vein of learning to harness his talent in a way that can be helpful to others and not just service his own impulse, strict standards of value, morality, and relationships. he needs to learn to rely on and trust others--this is clearly what the first seasons of voltron were working toward, and even if they hadn't been, i would argue that they should have been, because any other character arc keith takes would not make sense (hint, hint).
so! with that established, enter the blade of marmora, a rebel military organization that comes into the story in season 3, just as keith is getting "used" to piloting the black lion instead of the red lion as the Leader of Voltron. based on various character beats & dialogue from keith, we know he wanted to join the bom to further understand his galra side and, specifically, the knife his mother gave to him. the knife's power only accepts him after he says the line, "it doesn't matter where i come from. i know who i am." the knife accepting keith means that the bom does as well. the fact that keith is able to join the blade of marmora specifically after realizing that he doesn't need them to have a sense of self is, in itself, pretty boring and shoddy writing; it makes sense in a kind of platonian "only those who do not seek power are qualified to hold it" way, but it's a fairly surface-level take on the concept anyway. but for our purposes right now, we can accept it as valid.
so, keith fucks off and joins the blade after just a single season dedicated to developing his teamwork and leadership skills, half of which he spends failing in his new role by leading the team into battles they aren't ready for, not caring about communication between members, and overall just showing he's still struggling with being a team player just as much as he ever was. only near the end of the season does he begin to turn this around, but that development is cut short by him joining the blade.
now, following the line of thinking that keith's character are was meant to/could/should be "learning to connect and work with other people using his talents," what could him leaving the team, his friends, and his family to join an organization that explicitly values results over lives and the greater good over the individual contribute to this arc? it seems to be the exact opposite of the lessons the narrative was pushing keith to learn--he's not part of a team anymore, but goes on solo missions. he's not valued as a living person, but just on the basis of the skills he can offer to the org. if the seminal revelation keith has in season 3 is that it doesn't matter where he comes from, why did they put him with a group that is his connection point to his mother--aka, literally where he came from? i don't want to get too freudian about this, but it's off.
my assumption, then, would be that putting a character like keith into a situation like this would serve to sharpen the pitfalls in his former way of going about life, to further drive home that opening himself up to friendship and teamwork is good by giving him a taste of his old ways, by saying, "look, this is where rejecting people and recklessly using your talents will leave you--a place where you are not valued as a person, where nobody cares whether you live or die except for how it will affect their far-reaching goals. is this what you wanted? is this what you still want? are you sure?" it's the ghost of christmas future, showing him where he'll end up if he keeps shirking responsibility (learning to lead the team or even just work with them) and closing himself off to interpersonal relationships. the only way keith joining the bom at the time he did would make sense to me narratively would be is if it functioned as a warning.
that's not what happens, though. keith joins the blade, has a few scuffles with authority that he gets over without much mess, returns to team voltron a few times as a guest star to prove what lessons the blade is teaching him about leadership and teamwork (presumably off-screen, since we only ever see keith alone, disobeying authority, or directly subscribing to the blade's ideals a la that one moment where we are meant to think he went back to save someone because he cares about life but it was instead because they had practical importance to the blade's mission lol), goes back to the blade, and finally sets himself back up with voltron full-time to end out the show. at this point, he's a full-fledged leader character, not unlike shiro before him. his character arc has been completed; he gets screentime, sure, but it's mostly to show how much of a rogue action hero he is, a transformation that feels at best unearned based on the text of the show, and at worst out of character to his former maverick personality. keith becoming leader of the blade at the end of the show is the culmination of these disparate elements.
as media critics, we now must ask ourselves: what was it that keith wanted, and how does that compare with what he needed? wants vs needs is something you learn in media studies 101 (trust me, ive literally taken the class), and it describes the difference between superficial character growth and actual, meaningful character growth. my answer to this question is thus:
keith wanted to know who he was and understand his own story. keith wanted to do what he thought was right for the future of the universe and lead on his terms. keith wanted to live a solitary life so he wouldn't get hurt by losing people again.
keith needed to understand that his genetics and past trauma do not inherently determine who he is--he can make that decision. keith needed to learn that other peoples' opinions matter and have value, and may even be better than his. keith needed to let others in for the sake of his happiness.
it is my argument, therefore, that the blade of marmora and bom leader keith gave keith everything he wanted, but nothing he needed. it was a shallow decision made to ensure keith would retain his protagonist power once the showrunners decided, at different intervals, that shiro was 1) boring; 2) traumatized/dead; or 3) gay. keith got the shiro role because the showrunners were sick of shiro's character, and this came at the expense of keith's entire character arc, shiro's complexity, and the found-family plotline of voltron as a whole. it's bad writing, it's a nonsensical end to the character, and finally it's just fucking weird that the organization fighting against the galra still upheld its freakish racial purity standards and aesthetics. also keith leading a group of women is antifeminist too idk.
happy fuck the blade day.

Perpetual Canon Chapter 1. Light in The End of The Rabbit Hole
before / 2. “we go way back” II - 2/2 / next where it started / navigation / about the story
Russ turned to Noodle.
“So that's your friend?”
“Yeah,” she said. “‘Ts ma bestie. Great guy.”
Russ raised his eyebrows.
“We go way back,” she added defensively.
Ace blinked. Alrighty then.
(ABOUT) THREE WEEKS AGO
To be honest, no person in their right mind would go to the club to listen to a solo bass performance.
Ace tried to master acoustic guitar back when he was a kid, but apart from bringing some skills and some change on the streets, it made him bored outta his mind. Besides, Ace couldn’t even mask his mediocre skills with singing. He was no Ed Sheeran, that much he knew.
But bass was another story. Ace was leaning mainly on intuition while learning to play, and all jokes about bass players aside, it proved to be possible to reach a somewhat decent level just by lots and lots of improvising, and some solid pointers from Grubber.
So one thing led to another, and Ace landed this part-time gig downtown. He was hired by a fairly successful local cover band for a set of services, which included:
1. Playing before said band in bars, to make up for them being constantly late due to various “mystical coincidences”. (Ace suspected the lead guitarist's drug addiction. It was quite mystical how she fell from the stage a couple times already in the past week Ace has been working with them.)
2. Watching over the band and being their designated driver in case something goes wrong. (Things did go wrong for them pretty often.)
Unfortunately, considering the quality of bars the band was performing in, unless you were Jaco Pastorius, there was always a slight risk of being shot on stage. So Ace’s act usually was brief and involved a lot of guitar-slapping.
Apart from that, it was nothing special – worse than it could’ve been, but better than the jobless void Ace was stewing in for a whole year. To be honest, it was hard. When he and the boys were living in a leaking bus on a literal dump, Ace was a proper leader, capable and (allegedly) even fearless. Now, when they finally were able to afford renting a flat, everybody proved to be more capable than him. Everyone managed to find decent jobs, and they even started a fund for Lil Arturo’s college. Sure, for now it was just a jar in a closet. But a big, promising jar. Full of wonders yet to come, as Big Billy used to say.
And then there was Ace. 20-something, good for nothing. He has been doing odd jobs, but couldn’t settle anywhere for long. Maybe he looked too much like a street rat to catch the eye of proper employers. And, in all honesty, he was one, no avoiding it. Wasn’t looking good in a resume tho.
So no, Ace was not complaining about the gig. He was just observing, making notes. Wasn’t his fault notes came out to be sorta greasy.
--
After Ace finished his routine, he sat down at the bar.
He watched the band perform, and let the familiar numbness blur the uncomfortable pangs in his chest. As a cover band, they accepted requests. Sometimes they were hilariously bad. Right now someone ordered Nickelback and it was a jab at the vocalist’s pride, so instead of singing properly, he was hissing like bacon on fire.
Ace swirled on a bar stool and heaved a deep sigh in hopes that the bartender would take pity on him. The bartender wasn’t impressed, but rewarded him with a glass of water.
The night was still young and people just started to gather, so the bar was not very busy.
Ace was wearing his dark shades again, and so could stare at people busying around without drawing attention. Some might say that only douchebags wear shades in the building, but Ace was ready to accept any label as long as it came handy.
Aside from a couple of obvious regulars, there was also a tiny woman in a sickeningly bright hoodie. She looked quite out of place, like a teen who wandered in to take home her drunken father.
She sipped whiskey on rocks.
Maybe she was the drunken father.
Even with the hood covering her bangs, Ace couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something familiar about her. He vaguely hoped that it wasn’t because she was Asian and he had sight problems. He didn’t want to be That Guy.
In the meantime the band had finally finished torturing people with their take on Nickelback and got to another request.
“Somebody is feeling nostalgic!” the vocalist yelled in the mike. “Here is “Feel Good Inc”! Without the rap part tho, sorry”.
Ace felt a tingle of warmth rise up from under the dull blanket of boredom. To be honest, that was him who left this request. He figured that if he is going to sit here at the bar with only water in his system, he might as well try to enjoy it. And he knew for sure that this was the only Gorillaz song the band was capable of playing.
Humming under his breath, Ace glanced at the girl again.
She looked sorta tense now. She finished her whiskey in one gulp and called the bartender.
From the corner of the eye Ace saw her showing something to him. It looked like some piece of paper. Whatever it was, the bartender shook his head with a blank expression.
The girl was visibly disappointed by that and slided down from the stool, clearly about to leave. But then she looked up – straight at Ace.
He quickly darted his eyes back to the stage, burning with sudden embarrassment. The girl’s look was pretty intense.
By the time the vocalist reached the second windmill, she was already gone.
Only way later, when Ace was driving drunken band members home at night, it suddenly hit him. The reason why she seemed so familiar.
But it couldn’t be true. His vision must’ve been playing tricks on him.
It couldn't have been muthafuckin’ Noodle from muthafuckin’ Gorillaz.
--
The club was way more sleazy than the one they played at before. Ace half-expected that someone would throw a bottle at his head at some point during the performance. The band climbing on the stage was still hungover and slightly high, so for them the possibility was still on the table. Ace was already bracing himself for driving them all to the hospital instead of their houses.
Unfortunately it meant that, once again, he couldn’t get even a fucking Margarita.
Ace quickly slided between people and furniture, trying to find the least grease stained place for himself and his bass. He was pretty sure at least three couples were already fucking in darker corners of the bar.
That’s when he saw her again.
Same hoodie, same complexion. It was the girl.
She was diving through the crowd like a little koi fish, with a joint in her fingers and a hood on her head. Heart-shaped glasses sparkled dully under the dim lights.
Now Ace could say that he was quite intrigued.
Hypothetically, yes, it could’ve been Noodle. He was aware that The Band was staying in Detroit. But what could’ve prompted her to visit such smelly places? Aren’t stars supposed to club at the tops of skyscrapers with Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart making brownies, of something?
How dangerous exactly was it to get mixed in this?
--
So far things have been pretty intense. The guitarist ended up in ER two times in the last week, and the drummer caught some STD that didn’t allow him to sit properly.
But all this meant nothing to Ace. His thoughts were completely occupied by the hoodie girl.
For the last five clubs and bars they’ve been playing in, she was always there. She usually arrived well after the band started to play and there was a decent crowd in the venue already. She was always covered up in some way, took something to drink and chatted with the bartender. Then she disappeared.
By this point Ace was pretty sure that she was, in fact, the Noodle from Gorillaz herself. He’s made a point to google paparazzi photos just to compare how she would have looked without makeup and photoshop, and it was a match.
This time Ace was expecting her. The curiosity was bothering him like fleas (And he knew the feeling, the metaphor was quite literal here).
Would he get a chance to talk to her, to learn about why she keeps visiting all these places? Would it be better to ask her directly? Wasn’t she a direct person? What were the odds she’d hit him directly in the face?
As always, Ace sat down at the bar. Watching the drummer suffer on stage was quite entertaining, but he couldn’t stop looking around, waiting for a glimpse of the pink hoodie.
“Hey,” the bartender snapped his fingers, to get Ace’s attention. “You can’t sit here”.
Ace stared at him blankly, trying to remember if he did something to piss the guy off in the past. He appeared quite generic.
“Unless you buy a drink, you can’t take up the space. I don’t make the rules”.
Ace looked at the plaque behind the bartender. It said “My Bar – My Rules”. Right.
“Sorry chef. Ain’t got no money tonight. But you see, I need to watch those fuckas on stage. I’m, how do you put it… their nanny”.
“I don’t care, mate. Unless ya skinny ass ‘bout to order somethin’, Imma callin’ the security. We’ve got a hit up ‘bout ya folk, that stuff disappears here and there after ya’all performance. And from what I’m lookin’ at, you better leave the premises and wait for your friends outside”.
Ace clicked his tongue.
Fuckin’ band had a chance or even a plan to throw him under the bus for whatever junk they’ve smuggled from those shitholes? Not cool.
“That’s a shitty team to be on, that’s for sure,” chimed the voice from behind Ace.
He turned around.
The one and only Noodle from Gorillaz plopped on a stool beside him.
“I’m buying, man,” she said to the bartender. “Long Island for my friend here. And make it longer.”
She saluted Ace with her drink.
Bartender shot them a weary glance, but obliged.
Ace stared at Noodle, desperately trying to find some words to say that would not sound completely and utterly dumb.
“So,” he said.
“So,” she repeated. “Wassup?”
“Drummer got an STD and can’t sit properly,” blurted Ace. His cheeks burned. By the end of the sentence he was already accepting his imminent death.
Noodle raised an eyebrow and shot a quick glance on stage.
“Shit,” she chuckled. “I thought he was just energetic.”
“Gettin’ a solo in the middle of the chorus? Yeah, you can say so.”
Noodle snorted in her drink, splattering whiskey all over Ace’s shirt.
Great.
PRESENT TIME
“Music,” stated Noodle with a strainingly wide smile. “That’s how we know each other! Ha-hah”.
Russel was observing her quietly, with some sort of underlying intensity. Sure, it seemed that he was doing everything intensely, but Ace still panicked – just in case.
“Look, he’s got a guitar! So yeah. We jam sometimes. Don’t we?” She slapped Ace’s shoulder, probably dislocating it forever.
“We sure jam,” croaked Ace through the pain. “We jam very much”.

Platonic Natasha 'Phoenix' trace x Robert 'Bob' FloydRating: E Summary: After their accident, Bob and Phoenix try to figure out what went wrong and work through their complicated feelings. warnings: a little baby tinge of angst, but that's it. words: 1.6k a/n: a short and sweet little one. i always felt like these two were nearly telepathic the instant they met. they clicked really well for never having flown before and I'd like to think they became the fastest of friends and stay in contact after TG:M is completed. Also note, I made Bob married. Because no way that man is single. Impossible. x marnie
Natasha ‘Phoenix’ Trace was never nervous. She was always cool, calm and collected; completely in control at all times. She always was the most sensible and logical of her crew even while employed under the Black Aces, but tonight, the pilot just couldn’t count sheep for the life of her. She had stared at the ceiling for almost 3 hours before grabbing a jacket and padding out of her bunk, doing her best to not wake her bunkmate, Hangman, from his beauty sleep.
Natasha couldn’t stop the pounding in her chest or the ring in her ears. Every second since she was released form the med ward, she had been replaying her bird strike accident over and over again. What could she have done to prevent it? Did she do everything she could have at the time? What would have happened if something had gone differently? What would have happened if she died? If Bob died?
The web of chaos in her head was overwhelming enough to leave static where dreams should be. She needed to let out the storm in her brain, but in a mission like this, there was no support. If you’re unsure or too weak to handle an accident, you definitely wouldn’t be fit to fly this important mission. It was 11pm, she had a 0500 wake up scheduled and couldn’t sleep a wink. She did the most logical thing she could do.
She went to Bob.
Phoenix’s fist rapped only once on the door when it opened. The sight of her WSO alive and well relaxed her shoulders. She gave a thin lipped smile. Bob looked like shit. His hair was disheveled, there was a small bruise resting underneath the side of his jaw, but the eye bags under his glasses were designer, probably Gucci level at that rate.
He sent her a small smile, a tiny breath leaving his mouth. “You must have ESP, I was just about to find you.”
“Hey, that happens when you go through a near death experience with someone,” she whispered, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. “But uh, I can’t sleep. Can we talk? About today?”
“Yeah, yeah, come in,” he mumbled, opening the door wider for his friend. Bob, being a solo from the Screaming Eagles, was the last to arrive at base in the Dagger squad because of his long distance post. Being the odd man out, he was lucky enough to have his dorm to himself.
Bob’s bunk was neat and tidy. His bed was military made without a wrinkle to be seen, never even laid in. His desk, however, was messy and illuminated by a rickety lamp. A weapon’s service manual with too-old sticky notes and different colored highlighted portions was open to the anatomy of a Super Hornet’s F414 engine. He ushered her to sit in the empty desk chair opposite of his own.
“Good thing you came, because I wanted to talk too. I was going to text you to see if you were still awake,” the WSO uttered, his hands flat on his desk and staring hard at his textbook. “The whole situation just doesn’t make sense to me. Either that, or I just blocked it out and can’t remember.”
“Bird strike,” Natasha let out matter-of-factly. She fiddled with the cuticles on her thumbs as if they more interesting than her partner. “Dumb goose got sucked into the engine and blew us out.”
“No, no, I get that,” Bob replied. “It’s just… how did the other engine go out too? The way we were flying,” he trailed off, lost in his own head for a moment on how to word it. Pilots weren't as well versed in the science behind flying. They just needed to do it. If Phoenix was anything like his other front seater, their aerodynamic pressure force section of their physics course probably went through one ear and out the other.
A thin finger went pointing back a graph to his book, his eyebrows scrunched beneath his glasses. “Our knots and g's weren’t pulling fast enough to force the engine out, plus we emergency switched our generator on which would have jumped the system when we attempted a restart. The engine physically couldn’t have extinguished itself completely based off of that alone on the right side. It should have been alive long enough to at least get us back to base. When Techie and I went over systems checks on the ground, it was all completely green at 100% capacity. There couldn’t have been that many failures we missed.”
“But you did.” Natasha’s voice was steady. At Bob's immediate crestfallen expression from her blame, she quickly backpedaled. “No, take that face off, that's not what I mean. Bob, you guys didn’t fail. You did everything by the book. The plane did. It just happened, Bobby.”
“And that’s what’s eating me, Nat.” He collapsed back into his chair, pushing his glasses up to rub his eyes. “If system checks didn’t catch the safeguards, who else’s planes could have problems too? Who else could end up like us? Or worse?”
They were both quiet for a moment. The stare they shared was still and harrowing. It could have been Payback and Fanboy. It could have been Coyote, Rooster, or even Hangman the self proclaimed god himself. Any one of their friends could have been in their shoes, could have made different decisions and ended up in only three endpoints: alive, maimed, or dead.
Phoenix had to think of herself and her WSO. Bob was her responsibility and she would do everything in her power to bring her backseater home, no matter who they were. Bob, bless his heart, thought only mostly of their friends. He trusted Natasha explicitly and knew he never needed to worry about her decision making skills. It was everyone else, whom he couldn’t evaluate crisis situation control with, that was making his skin crawl. The 'what ifs'.
“That’s not something we can think about,” Phoenix drawled, drifting her eyes closed. “This mission is life or death, just like what we dealt with today. We have to work through it. It was a freak accident that we went down and a freak accident that we lived.”
“I disagree with that last part,” Bob replied, staring at his partner incredulously. She looked like a shadow of herself, shockingly resigned in herself. Her usually pulled back hair was down loose around her shoulders and pinned above her ears. She looked younger, and probably the most scared Bob had ever seen her. “There was no accident in our living. It’s because you took control and did everything perfectly.”
“Perfect,” she sneered, her head back in her hands. “If it was perfect, we wouldn’t have ended up in the hospital. We would have landed safe on base with everyone else.”
Bob slid towards her and knelt before his pilot. His blue eyes were stern. “We ended up in the hospital. Yeah, so what? A few scratches and bruises is pretty ok with me when we could have ended up as minced meat at the bottom of the desert, Natasha. That’s perfect for me.”
Bob wriggled his fingers at her. “Look. Ten fingers. Ten toes. All moving, barely any pain and really only a bruised face from my landing which you couldn’t control: that was all me. And look at you!” He motioned at her to look at herself. “You have barely a scratch on you. Not even a bruise from what I see. Phoenix. You were perfect.”
She was quiet for a second, tears pricking at her eyes. She was perfect, yet he was not. “You’re my responsibility, Bobby,” she whispered at the popcorn ceiling, suddenly more interesting than her partner. “All I thought about was what Maverick said: 'what would you tell their families? Would your excuse be good enough for them?'”
The silence in the room weighed heavy as they both pondered the question. Natasha leaned back into Bob with her elbows on her knees, her fingers looping through his. “If you died, Bob, my excuse would have never been good enough. Not to your wife, your sisters, your mom. You died because of a bird? I would have never been able to face them knowing that my inability to control the plane in an emergency was the reason you didn’t come home. I’d be–”. She trailed.
“A failure,” Bob finished for her. Her throat was tight, a stray tear leaving a glistening streak down her cheek.
"Yeah. That."
His brushed the tear away with the inside of his sleeve and let his hand moved to the back of her hair, forcing her forehead to his. She stiffened for a moment, but relaxed into his grip realizing he had no intention of pulling her further. They closed their eyes at the same time. He took a deep breath and she took one as well, matching his pace. Their fingers tightened on each other, feeling the ridges of their fingerprints, the peaks and valleys of each other’s knuckles. They were whole. They were here. They were still together.
Phoenix broke peace first to look up at Bob, his glasses reflecting her tired eyes. “We’re ok?”
Bob separated their heads, both of his hands on top of hers. He gave them a shake with a reassuring smile. “Yeah. Yeah, we’re ok.”
“I’ll protect you always, Bob. I swear that.”
“And I swear I’ll protect you too. It’ll get better, right?”
“Yeah. Yeah it will.”
Phoenix moved to stand from the chair, but Bob cleared his throat and stood a little too quickly with her. “You know Nat, we’re both bushed. It’s a long walk back to your dorm and it's late. You should just… stay? You’ll sleep easier without Hangman’s snoring.”
Phoenix raised her eyebrow to the bare bed across from Bob’s, her arms crossed. “Mixing genders in the dorm is usually frowned upon, Lieutenant Floyd. And besides, it's down the hall. What are you talking about?”
A flush ran across his face. “Alright, look, I’d sleep better knowing you were– here. So we can help each other if we need it, you know?” He went radio quiet, rubbing the top of his flannel sheet nervously. “I’m honestly afraid that if I try to go down, I’ll just panic.”
Natasha knew how hard that was for Bob to admit. Bob, sweet and kind nd strong in his own right, was not used to trauma. He never had a situation occur with himself that he needed to work through as hard as this. Phoenix traipsed over to Bob’s bunk, pulling out his storage container for an extra fitted sheet and quilt. She made the bed less than efficiently before scrambling up the ladder to lay down.
“I just gotta leave by sunup so Hangman doesn’t start making up rumors. You know he loves stirring the pot.”
Bob’s toothy grin was infectious as he tossed one of his pillows in her direction. She caught it with a puff of clean soap and lavender filling her nose. He turned off his desk lamp and clambered up into his own bunk.  “Thanks Pheenie.”
“No problem Bobby boy. Get some rest.”
