Hymns to Hecate
Orphic Hymn to Hecate
Hekate Enodia, Trivia, lovely dame, Of earthly, watery, and celestial frame, Sepulchral, in a saffron veil arrayed, Pleased with dark ghosts that wander through the shade; Daughter of Perses, solitary goddess, hail! The world’s key-bearer, never doomed to fail; In stags rejoicing, huntress, nightly seen, And drawn by bulls, unconquerable, monstrous queen; Leader, Nymphe, nurse, on mountains wandering, Hear the suppliants who with holy rites thy power revere, And to the herdsman with a favoring mind draw near.
Hecate’s Hymn to Herself
I come, a virgin of varied forms, wandering through the heavens, bull-faced, three-headed, ruthless, with golden arrows; chaste Phoebe bringing light to mortals, Eileithyia; bearing the three synthemata [sacred signs] of a triple nature.  In the Aether I appear in fiery forms and in the air I sit in a silver chariot, Earth reins in my black brood of puppies.
(From Porphyry’s lost commentary on the Chaldean Oracles, preserved by Eusebius of Caesaria in Praeparatio Evangelica. According to Porphyry, this hymn was composed by Hecate herself.)

Chapter 14
A Funeral Fit for a Tsar
CXXXIV. The chirping of the daybreak’s voices stirred her from her sleep. She stretched her arms. Then cracked her joints; then leaped off from her bed. Step followed step unto the cobbled porch. Her mind: cast on, thread, Weaving the forthcoming day’s events. One couldn’t help but weep At the laborious yet vital task ahead of her. It had now been a quarter-moon since the event insecure And still no trace of the goddess. To Ríona this silent sweep Was a sensation unknown. No; solitude was the phrase sweet.
CXXXV. Indeed, the girl revelled in it, and always found more work That had to be completed. At last, her stay’s main task was to give The Tsar a sepulchre; his rites, to wistfully relive The last night of his life before his spirit did embark Towards the eternal pastures and Our Lady Raven’s side. Befitting of a kin-in-kind, this ritual time did bide. Though not quite sure of his tribal root, she did see a clan mark That belonged to Rhuykë-folk and would perform the work of their hierarch.
CXXXVI. With a whirling of her digits, she harnessed the flow’s vastness Which streamed about this valley betwixt the Guardians and the lake Of Frozen Plains, gathering twigs, sticks and firewood to make A grand pyre. Without a heartbeat wasted, she would progress Down to the ground floor, as the timber swelled, amassed, accrued Afore the keep. Stepping outside, the lake sang its pure etude, Greeting her with the early morning song of great faithfulness. Thus, she collected the empty vessel and began the process.
CXXXVII. In the absence of prying eyes, she expressed her command On the flow so openly that each task seemed effortless. Flicking her wrist yet again, she flipped a boulder measureless In weight, setting it flat, then laying down the vessel grand Upon it. She stripped his body of its mortal garments And cleaned off the divine blood without magick’s assistance, As tradition dictated: the vessel clean without a crimson strand. Repulsion must not invade her mind, this task she need withstand.
CXXXVIII. Meticulously, she cleansed the Tsar’s brittle, bark-like skin. His hollow hallowed eyes shone brightly even in his passing, Putting to full display his long lost youth and the amassing Of the rings in form of wrinkles, marking what his life has been. The corruptive scarring imbued by flow, long had ceased to glow, Leaving his gaunt, haggard body in the state of peace bestowed. Finished with the cleansing, she kneeled down before her kind’s kin, Commencing the burial: this long awaited rite to begin.
CXXXIX. She touched down with her left hand, digging her fingers into the soil, Then held it within her palm, blowing on it with a message For the other side: “Dear ones! I come before thee to ask for passage Of my kin-in-kind. I, Kaitríonne Eleanoir, give his turmoil An end, grant passage to this heroic vessel, once beloved! I beseech the Tribe Mothers and the shepherding godhead!” She stood as still as possible, awaiting the flow’s recoil, And slowly spirits wandered near, paying homage to her toil.
CXL. In the grasp of uncertainty, she stumbled through her words: “I… give to thee the Tsar, the demigod of Rhüyke-folk, The hero of the Dark Days! As such, his triumphs I evoke: He saved mortaldom from the Wicrow, from the dreaded birds! I beg thee, Tribe Mothers, though he is not of Mockwiran blood, Grant him the passage to the Endless Pastures, the holy mud, For I don’t know where those who held him dear and true – his herds, His flock reside!” With those remarks, she wished for just rewards.
CXLI. A lithe clap began to echo through the valley, resonating. Remembering her teachings, she knew she could not turn away, Open her eyes; make any errant twitch despite the sway Of wicked compulsion, which kept beckoning, beckoning. A graceful, innocent and meagre, yet somewhat brazen voice Reverberated within her mind: “A wealthy choice Of words… for a madman, such as he? Hailing and venerating! ‘Tis a venturous approach; stupid, yet so fascinating!”
CXLII. “To ask for such a charitable yet unspeakable thing, While not adorned in colours of a shaman… amusing!” The voice belonged to a little girl, yet there was no confusing, Ríona knew full well the lass was the acting regent-king: Sky Pervuia – the most powerful living divine. To her luck, the goddess’ mind was distinct, often genuine, A refusal to toy with people-folk, rarely communicating With mortals; rather taking the dying souls under her wing.
CXLIII. Thus, spirits of one’s forebearers sought for the Grim Margrave On behalf of the deceased; through the words of the shaman, And yet despite such staunch truths, this rite disturbed the regimen Of the goddess, calling forth her ever silent, curious rave. Nevertheless, where she sensed honest respect from the heart, She approached the entity equally, willing to start With dialogue peacefully, and now before her stood a brave And daring soul, which did not want to be a destiny’s slave.

Orphic Hymn to Hecate
"Hekate Einodia, Trioditis, lovely dame, of earthly, watery, and celestial frame, sepulchral, in a saffron veil arrayed, pleased with dark ghosts that wander through the shade; daughter of Perses, solitary goddess, hail! “But to aid my pursuits .... Ah! Matilda, it lies not in your power!” “It lies in no one’s power but mine. Ambrosio, your secret is none to me; Your every step, your every action has been observed by my attentive eye. You love.” “Matilda!” “. . . You love, Ambrosio; Antonia Dalfa is the object of your flame. I know every circumstance respecting your passion: Every conversation has been repeated to me. I have been informed of your attempt to enjoy Antonia’s person, your disappointment, and dismission . . . . But I come to revive your hopes, and point out the road to success.” “To success? Oh! impossible!” “To them who dare nothing is impossible. Rely upon me, and you may yet be happy. . . . I formerly mentioned that my Guardian was a Man of uncommon knowledge: . . . the infernal Spirits were submissive to his commands. . . . I dared to perform those mystic rites which summoned to my aid a fallen Angel. . . . I saw the Daemon obedient to my orders, I saw him trembling at my frown, and found that, instead of selling my soul to a Master, my courage had purchased for myself a slave.” “. . . If on witchcraft depends the fruition of my desires, I renounce your aid most absolutely. The consequences are too horrible: I doat upon Antonia, but am not so blinded by lust as to sacrifice for her enjoyment my existence both in this world and the next.” “. . . It is I who invoke the ministry of the Spirits; Mine therefore will be the crime, and yours the profit. But danger there is none: The Enemy of Mankind is my Slave, not my Sovereign. . . . Accompany me this night to St. Clare’s Sepulchre, witness my incantations, and Antonia is your own.”

New Moon Ritual | Hene Kai Nea or Hekate’s Deipnon
Hekate's Deipnon is one of the main festivities in dodekatheism. Traditionally it's celebrated the last night of the New Moon every lunar month, but nowadays many pagans do it the last day of each solar month.
Tumblr media
Terms
All of these are deposited at a crossroads:
Oxuthimia, household purifications and sweeping.
Katharmata, portions of household sacrifices not used.
Katharsia, remains of sacrifices.
Alternatively, you can burn them.
Activities for the day
Take care of any chores and tasks that you need to finish or have left along the week/even month.
Clean your room, help clean the house, and get rid of any material items that don't serve you any more.
Order your things.
Clean your altar.
Cleanse the house and your body with incense, herbs, lustral water or fire.
Focus on grounding and cleansing meditations.
Rest and spend sometime reflecting on the past month.
Do a fire ritual where you write whatever you want to get rid of in a piece of paper and offer it to the sacred fire for it to cleanse it.
Ritual
Get showered
Get wine or milk for libations
Get food offerings if possible
Empty Zeus’ Kathiskos (if you have one)
Prepare Space and Self
Invoke the Goddess with Orphic Hymn
Perform Efesian Compass for guard
Perform the act of offering and dispose of them outside
Fumigate the home
Close the ritual
Re-guard home if wished
Prepare the space and self
Ahead of your ritual cleanse your altar and/or shrine to Hekate fully, ensuring that any previous food offerings are gathered up and the area is fully dusted. You may also wish to perform the same function for all your altar spaces, adding the detritus and food offerings to your offering to Hekate. You can also include the remnants of cleaning your home at large or any personal purifications rituals, such as those involving the use of eggs (although I would recommend leaving the egg intact for the purpose of the offering).
Place your candle at the centre of your altar / working space and prepare your ritual objects appropriately.
Once ready take a moment to centre yourself and prepare your mind for the ritual ahead.
Invoke The Goddess
Light the red candle saying:
Light goes before me, opening the door. Key to the Gods, be my way-shower.
Recite either a personal hymn of praise and invocation or use the Orphic Hymn to Hekate (or the Homeric Hymn if you'd like).
I call Einodian Hecate, lovely dame, Of earthly, wat'ry, and celestial frame, Sepulchral, in a saffron veil array'd, Pleas'd with dark ghosts that wander thro' the shade; Persian, unconquerable huntress hail! The world's key-bearer never doom'd to fail On the rough rock to wander thee delights, Leader and nurse be present to our rites Propitious grant our just desires success, Accept our homage, and the incense bless.
Ephesian Compass
Perform a preferred method of protection and balancing, the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram is a perfect tool for this as it does not establish a magical circle yet at the same time banishing unwanted energies from the self and space. If you would prefer a more Hekate relevant procedure you may try this.
Stand facing the east raising right hand above head, index finger pointing upwards. Visualise a bright light descending from heaven to touch the tip of your finger. Draw the light down to a point level with your third eye saying:
Aaski
Now draw your finger down your body and point at the floor, visualising the light traveling down and into the ground saying:
Kataski
Again with right hand index finger pointing extend out to the right and visualise a beam of light appearing from the extreme distant right to touch your extended finger tip. Draw the light level with your right shoulder and say
Lix Tetrax
Draw your finger across your body and visualise the light passing across you and extending to the far distance to the left saying:
Damnameneus
Visualise the light you have drawn across your body as a brilliant cross which will then rotate to bisect your body, pointing off in the four cardinal directions. Assume a stance where your right hand is raised to the sky, palm facing upwards, and your left pointing down, palm level with the floor. Visualise another beam of light descending from the heavens, entering your body via your upraised hand and passing through you into the earth via your left hand. Say:
Aision! For I am a child of the heavens above, born uniting stars and stones.
Hold the pose and visualisation for as long as feels necessary to create a balance within yourself before allowing the light to disconnect from the macrocosm before being drawn into you.
Offering of Deipnon
If you are offering a list of things you do not wish to carry forward into the new month you much dedicate it to Hekate before commencing with Deipnon proper. Do this by burning the list to ash whilst saying words of release for example;
I offer unto you all that is distasteful, remove these things from my life O Borborophorba, eater of filth, so that I may be cleansed and purified.
Once the list has been burned, add the ash and anything that remains to the offering place. Deipnon can now carry on as intended.
Miss this step if you are not including this as an offering. Lift the offering plate and present it to the Goddess saying:
Hekate Trioditis, I give you honour and praise. Goddess Who Walks Between, accept these offerings as thanks for your protection and guidance.
Replace the plate and take up the cup bearing the libation. Present it to the Goddess saying
From Earth to mouth, a drink for the restless dead and their Dread Queen.
It is important to remember that you MUST NOT partake in either offering as they are intended for the dead, not the living.
When taking the offerings outside for deposition, whether that is part of the ritual or following it, repeat words of dedication and libation. Leave and return home without looking back until you have closed the door behind you.
Fumigation
Light your incense and prepare to fumigate your home, starting with your altar, then processing around the home eventually returning to the altar. Visit every room and pay attention to external doors and windows as you pass the incense around. As you process repeat with authority
Ο Εκάτη αποτροπή κακών
O Hekate turn away evil
Once returned to the altar place the incense before your statue / candle dedicated to Hekate.
Close the Ritual
Begin by thanking Hekate for attending your rite in your own words and bid her farewell. Leave any remaining incense and the candle lit in honour of Hekate burning to go out in their own time but extinguish any other flame lit as part of the ritual.

Orphic Hymn to Hekate
I noticed the Orphic hymn to Hekate was not listed on page of Orphic hymns (here) on theoi.com, so I wanted to post it here. Theres two translations which I got from here, the one by Athanassakis is noted as being more accurate, while the Taylor translation is more poetic, so take your pick.
Translation by Thomas Taylor
I call Einodian Hecate, lovely dame, of earthly, wat’ry, and celestial frame, Sepulchral, in a saffron veil array’d, leas’d with dark ghosts that wander thro’ the shade; Persian, unconquerable huntress hail! The world’s key-bearer never doom’d to fail On the rough rock to wander thee delights, leader and nurse be present to our rites Propitious grant our just desires success, accept our homage, and the incense bless.
Translation by Apostolos N. Athanassakis
Hekate Einodia, Trioditis, lovely dame, of earthly, watery, and celestial frame, Sepulchral, in a saffron veil arrayed, pleased with dark ghosts that wander through the shade; Perseis, solitary goddess, hail! The world’s key-bearer, never doomed to fail; in stags rejoicing, huntress, nightly seen, and drawn by bulls, unconquerable queen; Leader, Nymphe, nurse, on mountains wandering, Hear the suppliants who with holy rites thy power revere, and to the herdsman with a favouring mind draw near.

And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. - Matthew 28:8-9 KJV
On the first day of the week, the women came to the tomb to perform the burial rites for Jesus Christ as they had not had the time to anoint His body before it was buried.
Imagine their surprise when they found the stone rolled back and the tomb empty of Jesus' body and an angel sitting there waiting for them. He told them that Jesus had risen and was going before them into Galilee and they were to go and tell the disciples. Then, Jesus Himself greeted them. Can you even begin to imagine their wonder and joy? In this Bible passage of the Gospel Book of Matthew, the disciples believe them and do go to Galilee where Jesus met them. In the other Gospel accounts, they were suspicious of the women's account and had to go see for themselves that it was true.
What was our reaction to the resurrection when we first heard it? Did you immediately believe, or did you have doubts? Faith is an interesting thing. It really doesn't become our own until we examine our beliefs and test them. The women didn't need to believe that Jesus had risen because they saw and heard Him themselves. The disciples weren't convinced. First, they had to check it for themselves. They were still trying to wrap their heads around his crucifixion. Jesus had warned them, but they didn't understand what He was trying to tell them. Even Peter, James and John who had witnessed His transfiguration didn't get it. And so Peter and John hurried to the tomb to check it out. It's okay for us to have doubts as well. The more we pray and read the Holy Bible and see how God is acting in our lives, the more our faith and our relationship with Him grows.
Thank Father God Almighty and the LORD Jesus Christ for giving us the witness stories of those who saw Him following His resurrection and may we continue to seek Him each day as part of our journey with Him on the path of faith and righteousness. Thank Father God Almighty and the LORD Jesus Christ for His almighty power and saving grace. For He alone is able to save us, forgiving our sins and gifting us eternal salvation and entry into His Kingdom of Heaven. It warms my heart to experience the restful peace and presence of His Truth, light and love and to hear the delight and joy in song as He and all of Heaven celebrates my rescue, and it is with joy and thanksgiving that I raise my voice in praise, rejoicing and song to celebrate with Him, and all because of Him. May we all feel the same.
May we make sure that we give our hearts and lives to God and take time to seek and praise Him and share His Truth with the world daily. May the LORD our God and Father in Heaven help us to stay diligent and obedient and help us to guard our hearts in Him and His Holy Word daily. May He help us to remain faithful and full of excitement to do our duty to Him and for His glorious return and our reunion in Heaven as well as all that awaits us there. May we never forget to thank the LORD our God and our Creator and Father in Heaven for all this and everything He does and has done for us! May we never forget who He is, nor forget who we are in Christ and that God is always with us! What a mighty God we serve! What a Savior this is! What a wonderful Lord, God, Savior and King we have in Jesus Christ! What a loving Father we have found in Almighty God! What a wonderful God we serve! His will be done!
Thanks and glory be to God! Blessed be the name of the LORD! Hallelujah and Amen!

@crimson-elegy-- continued from (x)
Time. He's had time every step of the way here to collect his anger, to carry it with him like layers of folded steel. Time enough to replay too many horrific scenarios in his head, the beginning and the end. To warp fear and lingering guilt into a cold fury.
Everything that has been taken from him– ripped away, burnt into bloody cinders, until his palms bleed with eight, crescent-shaped marks clawed into his skin, until the pain explodes with tears darkening fabric, until he finds himself carrying the last rites for the people who deserved to outlive him. He wants to hurl all that pain at Vincent, however irrational, it feels right to give his anger direction; a target that could absorb his rage without bending or breaking.
Someone who intimately understood what it felt like to have a monster wrapped so tightly into your psyche, ensō, an imperfect circle with no beginning and end.
Right now, Cloud doesn’t want to understand. He wants to be angry. To lose himself to one emotion or another, to give up this illusion of choice. Violence is satisfying. A shower of wood splinters and flashes of bared teeth, two bodies caught in a ricochet from one wall to the next.
Vincent’s molten-gold gaze is not enough to temper him, nor the sepulchral tremor of a voice that ought to have the hairs on his neck standing on end. He knows, logically, that he should wisely wear a fear that is visceral, so primal that it stretches deep into his bones.
What he finds, beside his rage and tension and so many other things, is anticipation.
When the veneer of control finally shatters, Vincent is both terrifying and intoxicating. Fury ignites into desire, a bleed of one extreme to the next as they become a tangle of limbs aimlessly shoving away derelict furnishings and moth-eaten upholstery.
Not enough oxygen in the room. In his lungs.
Messy kisses and nipped skin between mouthfuls of air, unbuckled fastenings and a long trail of torn, unwanted clothing.
But this is not unwanted. Chisel and hammer, driven straight into the cracks to give form to something he had never seen before. Wilted anger and wonder, spent as frosted breath and bare skin on the cold stone floor.
“...I’m not afraid of him. I’m not afraid of you.”
Come what may.

New “budget” Commander cards: March of the Machine Edition: Black
Time to be goth! All the cards are, at time of writing, under $2.
Tumblr media
Is Grave Titan still good in 2023? It's certainly not a terrible card. In any graveyard deck, this one generates less blockers, but more stats, and is more resilient to board wipes since the incubators can stay nice and safe until you need them.
Tumblr media
Backup is a great ability for combat damage creatures because it allows to immediately get the value. This, in many cases, will act as an immediate reanimation that can keep threatening more in the future. Plus, an archpriest of Liesa is neat.
Tumblr media
Move along, Rune-Scarred demon! Convoke on this dragon and on the spell tutored more than makes up for the extra mana on this reanimatable and blinkable tutor. In some cases, you'll still want the cleaner options of Sidisi, Rune-Scarred Demon or Burning-Scars Demon, but if you're just looking for a tutor on a body, this is probably the best option by default now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Black does have quite a few board wipes, but the modularity on offer on Invasion of Fiora makes it definitely very interesting, particularly on a budget. Whether you just want to clean out the commanders and keep your board or you're playing a legendary-themed deck or you're interested in Marchesa on the back, many decks should give this invasion a look.
Tumblr media
Have you ever had a Sepulchral Primordial enter the battlefield? It generally results in a game-winning amount of value. Here, we have a version that has different synergies, fills the graveyards to enable itself, and instead of Primordial's own body, you get to reanimate from your own graveyard as well. If you don't want the creature synergies of Primordial, you can look at this one as an alternative.

Recycle/Null Profusion is a very fun play pattern. I don't know if it's worth the six mana, but it's very fun to literally never run out of gas.

"Hekate Einodia, Trioditis, lovely dame, of earthly, watery, and celestial frame, sepulchral, in a saffron veil arrayed, pleased with dark ghosts that wander through the shade; Perseis, solitary goddess, hail! The world's key-bearer, never doomed to fail; in stags rejoicing, huntress, nightly seen, and drawn by bulls, unconquerable queen; Leader, Nymphe, nurse, on mountains wandering, hear the suppliants who with holy rites thy power revere, and to the herdsman with a favouring mind draw near." Orphic Hymn to Hekate, trans. Thomas Taylor, (1758 – 1835)
