Summary: A conversation snippet between Mike and Ashlyn outside of the hospital.

Silence drifted between the two, the only sound being the late-night car or shuttle bus taking patients between the different buildings of the hospital and emergency room. Ashlyn stayed silent, her breathing shaky as she held the cold water bottle against her puffy, stinging eyes.

“Feeling any better, kiddo…?”

Ashlyn raised the bottle from her eyes, condensation—maybe mixed with tears—falling off of it and hitting the corners of her eyes and her eyelids. She spoke hoarsely, her throat aching from the held-back sobs that had clawed their way out of her chest. “Not really.”

“Can’t blame you for still feeling bad…” Mike said, reaching out and touching her shoulder. “You kids have been taking care of this way too long…”

“We can’t. We can’t do this on our own…” Ashlyn choked out, putting the bottle back over her eyes and sinking further against the bench. The heel of her boot loosely, slowly, bounced against the ground—she needed some kind of outlet, but was too tired to vigorously bounce her leg like she would usually do. “I’m tired. We have to do this every single night, keep track of how many bullets we have, where our weapons are, and—now. Now Tyler’s…”

“He’ll be alright. He’ll be fine, Ashlyn.” Mike murmured, giving her shoulder a light squeeze before pulling his hand away. “We’ll figure out what to do.”
