#say no to ai art

So Netflix is releasing this animated movie but here’s the thing - all backgrounds are done in AI. No actual BG artists were hired or credited for this work.
And here’s the kicker - I gave them too much credit. I realized that not even the AI users are credited apparently.
Check this out:

“+Human”. No names, no nothing.
Tumblr media
I know it’s tempting, but please don’t hate-watch this thing. Numbers equal profit even if the people watching are just doing it to mock. Don’t give Netflix and other studios even more incentive to fire more animators and replace them with machines trained on their work and skill. Hilariously, the excuse used is ‘there aren’t enough artists’. That’s not true - there are more than enough artists, but the real issue is that no one wants to pay a living wage. Here’s a short video about the reality of animation in Japan.

The biggest winners in this equation at the end of the day are the AI infrastructure owners - owners of Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, etc. Do not feed this machine, it creates more monopolization of entire industries, raises a powerful few and dehumanizes the rest.
EDIT: a lot of people are unsure what the anime’s called - it’s The Dog and the Boy.

Update! A kind soul over on twitter let me know that there are pretty reliable AI art checkers online, that have been developed by people specialising in AI and machine learning!
An NYT article also talks about the pros and cons of a number of them.
I tested all the 3 free open access sites (Illuminarty, Optic AI or Not, Umm-Maybe) and only Illuminarty and Optic AI or Not gave consistent results on both art and photographs.
I'll put the links below so anyone can go and check for whichever art they want to (download the original images from tumblr posts, and upload them)
https://www.aiornot.com/#home
https://app.illuminarty.ai/
These are the results :
Tumblr media
Optic flagged it as AI immediately.
But Illuminarty had very interesting aspect : when I uploaded the full image, AI probability was 10%. but, on cropping out the bottom of the image (jacket) the probability jumped to 73.9%
This is consistent with my original comment on the art here
Tumblr media
My limited understanding of these programs indicate that they scan the entire image including all the individual pixels. AI programs like Stable Diffusion, Mid Journey, DallE all leave signal artifacts when they process an image, which is then left on the final pic generated!
Compare these two @/skykashi original arts, that are immediately flagged as human made.
Tumblr media
And now I get to my favourite AI art bro in the fandom @madasama! I commend you for admitting that you not only use AI, but are proud of producing a large number of "real" arts in such a short time!
Tumblr media
Here's your "art"s results!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
@elhnrt made a far more detailed and organised post about this specific weirdo, feel free to check it out!
I will be using fandom tags on this particular post so that it has a broader reach. Especially for genuine digital artists and art lovers. Save the links, and always keep an eye out for AI, it's everywhere these days.

My experience with glaze, before and after glazing (glaze is a protection layer to protect against ai stealing your work)
Here's a drawing before being glaze'd™, click read more to the the drawing after being glazed
Tumblr media
nah, i tricked you, that IS the image after being glazed, if you didn't notice the effect, it may not look apparent to your art as well (although do note that my art uses a lot of textures so the protection layer is not very visible, and i used the default intensity setting) this social media for artists website cara (dot) app, let's you glaze your images FOR FREE on their own servers, meaning you don't need a powerful computer for it i've just needed to create an account and i could upload a file right away, it takes a few hours if that's a dealbraker for you

The thing about AI art (in any capacity) is that it lacks soul. There is no emotion behind it. Sure, you can tell a robot to create a piece based on the feeling of grief, but a robot doesn't know what grief feels like. It has never felt loss. It has never had to build from the bottom of the pit back to the top, having lost it all and been forced to your lowest point. It has no clue what it feels like to be overcome by rage, by sorrow, by anxiety. It can only create based on other, already existing works because it doesn't know what the human experience is like, and it doesn't know what the fuck grief is, outside of the basic definition.
With the use of AI for art, you lose the most basic human components of creation, and honestly, is it still even art then? Isn't the point of art to help us cope with the human experience? Why bother creating something to cope with being human if it's not even made by a human? There is no humanity in AI art. There is no real point to it.

For those of you who may be concerned about Tumblr's pending AI scraping deal, please know that the Tamlin Week blog has opted out.
Tumblr media
If you are interested in doing the same and haven't already done so, you can follow the directions to opt out here:
On Mobile
On Desktop
You will need to do this for each blog you have (if you have more than one). If you want to take extra precautions, you can learn more about using a program like Nightshade or Glaze to help protect your work from AI bots.
Good luck to everyone, and happy creating!

Remember Glaze, the tool you can use to cloak your art and protect it from being scraped by AI?
There’s another tool out now, and it’s called Mist. From what’s written and what people are saying, it requires less processing power than Glaze and is faster. And apparently, it leaves less artifacts on flat artstyles (like mine).
Examples from their page:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ll try it myself today to be sure this is all real, but I wanted to share it with everyone as soon as I knew about it.
Protect your art by using Glaze or Mist (or anything like them that you know of) before uploading your work!

If you care about art and artists at all, PLEASE sign this petition calling for the regulation of AI generated “work”. These generators exploit us and are built on our backs while we desperately scream no, all so tech bros and corporations can give our jobs to machines that were trained by stealing our work to feed it into a database we never wanted to be part of.
The things called for in this petition are basic and only the beginning, but they’re important first steps in keeping human artists safe. PLEASE help us.
Furthermore, please stop using these generators, at least until they stop taking our work to regurgitate it back at you at our expense. Without regulation, AI art is and always will be unethical and come at the expense of artists and art as a whole. Every image you generate continues to harm us. If you want a piece of art, commission someone, or draw it yourself. It doesn't matter what your skill level is, your art will ALWAYS be better, more meaningful, and more valuable than anything an AI can spit out.
Please, fight to protect artists. Fight for ethical regulations of AI generators.

#boycottHarperCollins they are trying to use AI voices instead of actual human beings voice actors and pretend it's for us, so we have more product to have but it's not. It's nothing but greed on their end, I want a world full of artists and real human voices not this.
I know it can seem hopeless but remember "in a capitalistic society, it is the consumer who decides what gets made and who gets to make it merely by giving or withholding their support" AI and greedy dystopian companies can't make money if we don't give them money, hit them where it hurts and boycott and tell them why your boycotting

When AI went public, I'll be honest, I was hoping it would be more in a "The Machine from Person of Interest is real" kinda way. Not a "We're teaching the AI to replace those who do the most human work of all" kind of way.
