Here is my contribution to Our Favorite Scene Zine latest edition, which compiled over 20 artists’ interpretations of the reunion scene from THE HOUSE IN THE CERULEAN SEA. This book was my first inroad to TJ’s staggering body of work, and remains one of my comfort books at times when my faith in humanity is challenged, or when parenting two smarty-pants gets particularly hard. 😅 From the outset, I wanted to focus on the kids’ reactions to Arthur and Linus’s reunion, because love is something that children inherit from their grownups, and that joy multiplies as they grow up in safe and accepting spaces. I hope you like how it came out. 💕

Linus Baker disliked himself and had a depressing view of life but Arthur and the children still fell in love with him and I absolutely love that bc it crushes the idea that you have to first love yourself or be healed in some way before other people can love you.

Recently I’ve read the house in the cerulean sea and I loved it SO much!!! I couldn't stop thinking about them so I HAD to make a least a sketch of these lovely characters who have my entire heart

The trope “middle aged men falling in love” gotta have crack in it or something

Zoe, Sal, Arthur, and Linus stand in the back. Zoe wears bright patterned dress and a white turtleneck. Her white afro is pulled back behind a bandana and wreathed in flora. In the front stand Chauncey, Talia, Lucy, and Phee. Chauncey wears a holly wreath as a hat and his tentacle is holding Talia's hand. Talia wears a cuordoroy overall dress and smiles nervously at the viewer. Her white beard and hair are down and flowing. Lucy is wearing a shirt with a blushing skull that says "Live your best life" and he makes an incredibly innocent expression at the viewer. His black hair it's choppy and unkempt. Next to him is Phee in a floral shirt and plaid skirt with leggings. Her red hair is full of flora. Phee stands with her arms crossed and smirks knowingly at the viewer. End ID]

THITCS sequel announced. I think it was good as a standalone but I'm still intrigued and looking forward to see what happens next (and see these two again :3 )

and so my friend showed me House in the Cerulean Sea and it was over for me

Was anyone else absolutely convinced that TJ Klune was British while reading THITCS? Because the entire time I read it, all the characters had British accents. I can’t imagine that book being American. What is this? Has anyone else had this thought? Am I going crazy?
