Beauty and the beast but the people who are normally the good guys are evil
heheheheheheee I actually have a playlist called “evil batb” I listen to when I am ready to be wicked and commit crimes
Agatha cursed Adam at the last moment not as a sort of justice from hell measure but because he was about to crush her windpipe. sometimes self defense has to be a spell you set with your own blood. she crumples to the floor, dead, as Adam grows bones and claws and nails and teeth—and teeth—and teeth—and teeth….
In this timeline, a girl who might have just once been a dreaming bookworm has gone mad with loneliness, her heart a husk of what it was. she had a mother once, who died. she had a father once, who lived, staring at nothing, his fingers tinkering with gears that never fit. the magic and adventure never came. and when she hears there's a monster in the woods, she thinks I can turn my loneliness to some good measure. I'll go and kill the beast. Maybe then someone here in this village will take me as I am, if I finally have blood on my hands.
why was Adam trying to kill Agathe? because he doesn't trust magic, never has. What good is magic if the people you love can die and they do nothing to stop it? Agathe could have kept his mother from dying. Agathe could have stopped his father, any chance she had. but loneliness and anger creates more loneliness and anger, and in his desire to kill the last magic thing in the forest he becomes it, himself, roaring through the hallways and filling the rooms with a shaggy, aching rage.
Belle shows up and these two souls who don't have one good thing to say about the rest of the world start trying to kill each other—Adam because he has nothing left to be but a beast; Belle because she has nothing left to be but a slayer.
the staff are evil too!! oh my god they’re all so bad! but they’re bad in like, the campy tim curry ooo I’m evil because I wear leather kind of way. they’re bad like muppets. plumette throws knives lumiere wears thigh-highs cogsworth plots and schemes on like, how to set the table with purple napkins instead of white. in a previous life mrs. potts was a master assassin. they're all so busy dancing to lady gaga and being gay they never get around to actually committing any crimes.
what’s Gaston doing here? Gaston is simply a Man of the People! He’s been put down Too Long! he is in love with Belle and entirely unknowing that she’s got a heart made of holes. he's big into examining himself from a "safe and healthy perspective" and discussing every aspect of his personality in therapy but hasn't actually noticed that Belle is lonely or, uhh, not here anymore because she went to kill the monster in the woods and that was five weeks ago.
as naturally happens when two angry toxic people with precisely the same cocktail of loneliness meet, Adam and Belle segue quickly from trying to kill each other to, oopsie, relating over their shared griefs and maybe actually finding solace in each other. Are they in a healthy relationship? Absolutely not! Oh my god nobody go near them! They're surrounded by evil gay furniture why would you even want to! But they are what the other one needs, in this broken and fragile state, and I don't think anyone should fault them for holding onto each other, if it's the only life raft they have, as they patch their broken pieces in the only ways they know how. No one wants to be wicked. Some just have shadows that grow longer, and need a little sun to light the way.
So maybe they're damned. It's not a bad thing to be damned together.

oooooooo wait that bit about the curse skewing time and how it was only 5 days 👀 I’d love to hear about that
OKAY. LET’S DO THIS.
so, my theory is that the curse does in fact skew time. in the movie, gaston says “maurice! i’ve spent the last five days trying to find you!” and this is the same night that the curse will be broken. implying that it’s been Only Five Days since gaston left maurice to the wolves in the forest. this, in turns, implies that it’s only been five days since adam and belle met. and while i am happy to play the Disney Soulmates card, and maybe it was five days, i have some ideas as to why it maybe felt longer than that.
firstly, and for some inexplicable reason this needs to be readdressed every now and then, let’s discuss how long the curse has been happening. in batb 1991, lumiere says it’s been ten years in his song be our guest. this, along with the ‘91 narration saying the last petal would fall on adam’s 21st birthday, has unfortunately led to far too many people thinking that adam was cursed as an 11 year old child. this just isn’t true! not only is it positively insane to think that an enchantress would punish a child that way, you really need not look further than our beloved boy chip.
regardless of how old you think he is, i would bet that majority of us agree he’s younger than 10. i’ve always pegged him around 9-10, and in batb 2017, chip’s actor nathan mack was in fact that age at the time! regardless, he’s very most likely younger than 10. now, if you truly think the curse is Ten Real Years Long, i want you to look me in the eye and try to convince me that a teapot gave birth to a teacup. CLEARLY, chip was not born a teacup. chip longs to be a real boy again. i don’t recall if he says anything specifically in batb 1991, but in batb 2017 he asks his mother if he’ll ever be a boy again! he knows what it is to be a real boy! implying he was cursed, and is trapped, as a child; completely destroying the idea that the curse is legitimately ten years long. much more plausibly, lumiere was singing hyperbolically, because he’s a dramatic bitch (and we like him so much.)
now, i’m not going to make this a competitive thing, but batb 2017 DOES do a lot to fix this problem up. number one, the beginning narration gives no indication to adam’s age, or when the rose petals will finish falling. number two, the prologue actually shows chip sneaking into adam’s ball amidst the chaos, highlighting both that he WAS the same boy that you see at the end, and that he was in the room when the enchantress put her curse on everyone. and number three, lumiere’s line in be our guest changes from “ten years” to “too long” - further confirming my theory that he’s just lamenting the agony of their experience. he may not truly know the length of time it’s been, just that it has been too long for anyone’s comfort.
so now that we’ve gathered that time is already a bit funky, let’s look at this curse. the enchantress is one powerful lady. i personally think she’s some kind of trickster goddess of justice or something, who just goes around the world teaching assholes lessons. regardless of who or what agathe is, she is incredibly powerful. the beginning narration states:
“The prince begged for forgiveness, but it was too late, for she had seen that there was no love in his heart. As punishment, she transformed him into a hideous beast and placed a powerful spell on the castle, and all who lived there.”
she placed a powerful spell on the CASTLE ! as well as adam and the servants! i think that’s so significant. and it’s very clear that she DID curse the castle! it’s trapped in a perpetual winter, despite the fact that it’s june for the rest of the country. not only that, but you can see the way the curse affects the castle. every time a petal falls, the castle rumbles and parts of the structure crumble and break. the place is slowly deteriorating, the curse is eating it alive. given what we know about their perception of time, and that the castle was individually cursed, it doesn’t seem too much of a stretch to think that the castle is not only frozen in terms of weather, but frozen in time as well.
looking at this next part of the narration:
“As days bled into years, the prince and his servants were forgotten by the world, for the enchantress had erased all memory of them from the minds of the people they loved… …As the years passed, he fell into despair and lost all hope. For who could ever learn to love a beast?”
she’s so powerful she genuinely affected the entire world. or at least, all of europe. like, nobody is asking or wondering about the french prince?? no one is stopping by?? no one is sending letters?? nope! their minds have literally been erased. not a soul in france is wondering what their monarchy is up to. adam has been entirely forgotten. i also think it’s important to note the usage of the word “years” which she says twice. sure, you could argue that it is real years! because it says so! but honestly i think she’s speaking from the perspective of the cursed individuals, particularly adam. in both instances, adam’s experience is stated immediately after she says “years” — first, being forgotten, second, falling into despair. i would argue, then, that to adam (and the servants) it had simply FELT like years. not real years that the rest of the world would experience, but a terrible weight on their shoulders, a hopeless longing for rescue from this awful state, dragging on seemingly endlessly, too long, feeling like years.
my conclusion: i believe that the castle time and real time are not the same. based on everything i’ve laid out, it seems as though the castle is very especially cursed, and while it has felt like years (i honestly don’t think it’s felt like more than three or four. i feel like if you go any further you have to start accounting for mental age, particularly chip. but i may be getting too deep about it.) in reality, it may have only been a matter of months. what if that awful storm that led the enchantress to come “seek shelter” happened in january or february, and now it’s june. perhaps it’s been around six months in real time. but to the castle’s inhabitants? it’s felt like years. so then, if we can use this theory for a moment, perhaps belle’s “five days” at the castle felt a lot more like a handful of weeks, maybe even a month or two.
i also think this because the sort of rapport that adam and belle have just seems like they’ve known each other longer than five days. and don’t get me wrong, sometimes people have those instant connections. like i said, im happy to play the Disney Soulmates card. but humor me for a minute! they have their little inside jokes about romance novels and belle teases him in such a way that just exudes the comfortability between friends, not new acquaintances. not only this, but when they’re in paris, adam simply asks “what happened to your mother?” when belle explains where they are. this, to me, implies that he already knew her mother died when she was a baby. and, personally, i don’t think that’s something i’d mention to someone i’d only known less than a week. but it seems like she’s already had That conversation with him, and further, it seems he’s comfortable about the topic, and feels close enough with her to ask about it further! to me, the way their relationship is depicted, it seems as though they’ve really developed a friendship over more than a bit of time, and have definitely very naturally fallen in love within said friendship.
anything is possible, and this is all my own little speculations and ideas. whether it really was five days or perhaps more, it’s quite clear that their love is something quite spectacular.

The whole thing with Blake/Adam easily could've skirted too close to being 'female character is punished for compassion/punished for loving the Beast' in a deeply cynical way, cynical of the very thematic thrust of Beauty and the Beast that makes it what it is (accompanied by farcical notions of Intimate Partner Violence-equivalencies from poorly truncated versions of BATB), and honestly ending up feeling probably close to genuine victim-blaming! Because that's how those narratives where the female character is punished for 'liking the wrong person' end up feeling. It's not her fault!
I think it easily could've skirted too close - and still possibly could - to conveying the idea that at a sufficient level of torment you can only remain a villain and inevitably put that misery and suffering on everyone else. There are characters who have suffered 'just enough' to be redeemable, and some who've suffered too much.
But I know, say, that some of the crew thinks Adam is Gaston (and Blake is Beauty and Beast at the same time so it makes sense - he can't accept her whole entire being) but I also feel that the wilting rose is representative of how the Beast's curse is depicted in popular media - namely the Disney version - and that this wilting rose curse depicts Blake's conflict of the persona, the false self, the curse that she thinks she is, I enjoy talking about that angle too. The Gaston bit works for the romantic jealousy, certainly.
I particularly enjoy that the wilting rose connects to Ruby in a meaningful way - because then you get that Blake-Ruby linkage, in that the wilting rose curse, once banished, is represented by Ruby's, well, scattering rose. That's probably the only symbolic explanation you really need.
But being that I know Blake/Adam is textually (and Word of God) not some really gross, cynical subversion of BATB that cuts the meaning of the story at the knees means I'm similarly optimistic about the interpretation of Adam in contrast to actual redemption arcs in the story, because if the themes of BATB are realised in their own R/WBY-appropriate celebratory way, it's hard to read a condemnation of other monsters and beasts in the story. BATB was not accidentally chosen as the romance shared by two of the main characters, even if I think that its translation potentially weakened one of my favourite elements of BATB (the personal disgust Beauty feels for Beast is impossible for Blake and Yang), because I think that the themes of this romance are found in other romances in the story - seeing with clear eyes and embracing the lover in their fullness.
So, if the treatment of BATB is not punitive, I expect its monsters and beasts are not treated punitively on the terms of being monsters and beasts.

First Ten Lines game
Rules: Share the first line of ten of your most recent fanfics and then tag ten people. Don't have ten? Not to worry, just share what you have.
i saw @rosesutherlandwrites do this fully a month ago and meant to do it then but uh. didn't. ONWARDS!
When Elena was a very young child, before bed every night she was told three rules by her mother, to stand her through the tests and trials of life. (Roses and Lavender, Cinderella/BatB crossover, WIP)
Late winter in the West Wing of Adam’s castle was, in Kit’s opinion, one of the more miserable times of year. (pink in the night, PWP sequel to Roses and Lavender.)
After seven years living under a cursed winter, the entirety of the household had been overcome with happiness when the spell finally broke in mid-August. (12 Days of Christmas 2021, BatB 2017 Christmas-themed prompt list of which I only completed, uh. Two).
DRAMATIS PERSONAE: THE LOSERS: being a group of children who made a promise, with consequences they could not understand. (EXTRACTS FROM "STEPHEN KING'S 'IT'", IT (novel/2010s films). Unfinished but not technically abandoned I guess.
There was once a widow, who lived alone with her two daughters on a small estate in the middle of the countryside. (my heart has long been given to you (now i wanna hold you close), the kitella role reversal au that lives on in my head rent-free)
Sarah Jane heard the sound of crying as soon as she got out of the little yellow car. (A Meeting in the Car Park, Doctor Who/Sarah Jane Adventures, a flash-fiction I wrote with my uni's DW society)
Many years ago, before there was such a thing as an independent government, and kings were still thought to have divine right, a young prince lived in a shining castle. (Ever Just the Same, a lesbian retelling of Disney's Beauty and the Beast).
The summer before Yvonne died was bright and hot, long stretches of blue skies easing into a July of muggy, humid discomfort. (tightly knotted to a similar string, a prequel to Ever Just the Same exploring the relationship between the Beast's mother and Mrs Potts)
Ella glanced down at the plain, unassuming gold ring on her left hand. (As Long as You Hold My Hand, Cinderella (2015). Flash fiction originally written on tumblr, cross-posted to ao3)
[iOS]: i need a favour (so this is home (so this is home), Cinderella/BatB epistolary fiction crossover, another flash fiction originally posted to tumblr. the roses and lavender prototype, if you will)
if you see this and you want to do it, consider yourself tagged (that's why i did this in the first place lmaoo)

Okay so, earlier I reblogged a post that kinda offhandedly stated--as part of a larger, almost totally unrelated point, which is why I don't wanna be annoying about it to the OP--that in Beauty and the Beast, the out-of-universe reason that the prince (who I will be referring to as Adam) was 11 when he was cursed is because the writers didn’t realize they made him that young until it was too late to change it. So as a huge nerd I wanted make my own post explaining why I believe this is false, actually! Using excerpts from the BATB artbook and from a leaked first draft of the screenplay:
1. In said draft, dated June 14th 1990, Adam is explicitly stated to be eleven years old:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“In FULL ANIMATION, we meet the eleven year-old child as he is being dressed and fussed over by a slew of harried servants”
Soooo, I’m pretty sure they did in fact know they were making him 11 years old. Honestly I don’t think I really need to elaborate more than this but I’m going to anyway, along with talking about some other things I find interesting.
2. In this version of the story, Adam was really cruel and cold to the enchantress, like I know he’s 11 but damn. He really just got told he cares for nothing and loves no one but himself and said “why should I?”
Tumblr media
Kinda wish more of this made it into the final version of the movie tbh, if only to drive home the point that he truly was an awful kid and didn’t just get cursed for “not wanting to let a stranger in his house”, as I’ve seen some people say.
3. Also in this version of the story, the castle servants were cursed simply for getting in the way of the enchantress’ attempt to punish Adam and trying to plead with her that he’s only a child, and so that he would have to be isolated with no human company.
Tumblr media
4. This is a bit of a tangent but even though I’ve been referring to him as a prince, he’s actually called a duke in this version! Obviously they changed that as the prologue of the movie now explicitly calls him a prince.
Tumblr media
Also, this happens, and I really wanna know how exactly he would explain all of this to Belle in his own words:
Tumblr media
It then cuts to Belle and Adam already having gotten married and being about to leave on their honeymoon and I’m sorry, this is not related at all to the discussion of his age, but I adore this ending so much that I almost, maybe, kinda sorta like it just as much as if not better than the actual ending and I feel the need to share it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Belle and Adam literally don’t notice a whole explosion in the east wing because “they’re too caught up in newlywed bliss”, help, my heart--this gives us more time with Adam as a human, is adorable, and just feels so classic and Cinderella-esque. Actually, the original prologue and ending parallel the structure of Cinderella so strongly (especially if they would’ve added the chorus singing the title song) that maybe they thought it was a bit too much like Cinderella, and I wouldn’t trade the unique stained glass prologue and last shot of the final movie for anything, but I still just love every word of this.
But ANYWAY, one last thing pertaining to Adam’s age:
5. Before even this draft was created, Howard Ashman originally wanted the poor kid to be seven when he got cursed. SEVEN! And I know that because of the Beauty and the Beast artbook:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wanted to share this whole section for context, but the most relevant part is that Howard’s original idea, which the directors apparently disliked despite it still making it to the first screenplay draft, was... well, the same thing I showed earlier, except the main character was “a seven-year-old prince”. Which does make me wonder how old Howard originally imagined Belle to be, seeing as Paige O’Hara has referred to her as an adult in her early 20s several times since the movie was released (so no, she’s not 17 and getting with a 21 year old, the “Belle is 17″ thing comes from another drastically different version of the script) and in this draft is described as 18 at the same time that Adam would be nearing 21:
Tumblr media
All this is to say, though, that imo the live action remake doing things like changing the “ten years we’ve been rusting” line, never specifying that the rose will bloom until his 21st birthday, and making him explicitly older + having him be cruelly abusing his political power in the prologue... is interesting and not necessarily bad, just different (and only canon to that adaptation, not to the original animated film!). It places the Beast’s curse in a much different light and makes it seem much more justifiable (though even then it doesn’t justify cursing the servants tbh) than the idea that the enchantress would so cruelly punish not just an 11 year old but everyone else who cares for him in response to him simply being a spoiled, bratty child. I can see why some might prefer him being an adult, and I can also see how some may not realize that he was supposed to be 11 with how much older he looks in the prologue and the painting in the castle (which admittedly is an odd decision to me that I’m not sure of the reasoning for). But I think him being a young child at the time of the curse really helps to show just how unjust his situation is, and also I think the writers definitely knew what they were doing here. If they wanted to make sure Adam was an adult at the time of the curse then really, they only would’ve had to remove/change a couple of lines, but they clearly wrote him as a young child in several previous versions of the script and then... continued to imply exactly that in the final movie.

I usually keep this AU to myself but I kind of had the idea that Five Pebbles was cursed to live forever entirely as a human (and by extension an echo because he's bound to be immortal and remain on earth as it evolves at all time until he does at least does something to make up for the damage he's done).
So when the world he once knew is entirely wiped out and is reborn and he wakes up to the BATB timeline (in the AU, the Beast's castle was built in the same area Five Pebbles' superstructure is at), he ends up renaming himself to Cinq Cailloux to blend in with the humans, now working with Adam as one of his butlers.
And nobody suspects a thing, though people keep questioning why he keeps talking about this "ancient past" and keeps writing strange symbols (or karma symbols) on his paper. Lumiere thinks the stuff he talks about is pretty cool so he's just all like "OWO" when he hears FP say anything ever about the subject.

A few things
So i am thinking that I may move to a fresh new account. I wanna restart a little. And as for writing id queue them up— just to keep up. My story may change to suit more cannon and Im thinking ill default to playing beast vs the prince— however, i am not interested in writing the same story over and over. Not everyone can be “ belle”— id also like to explore prince adam breaking his own curse by learning to love himself or even platonic love. Doesnt always need to be romantic—
Ive been watching fruits basket and it’s sparked the batb feels for me.
-Also i no longer do sexual nsfw out of respect to my spouse. He requested that I not. And i feel that is more than okay to grant.
If that means people would rather unfollow, or not want to interact- I understand 💕💕
Question— what do people like best for reading rules and character info( Ie: google page? A tumblr page?)? Id rather have my page focus on function over aesthetic. Let me know what ya’ll thin k.//

Bumbleby/Beauty and the Beast parallels masterpost
So by this point it goes without saying that bumbleby is heavily based on beauty and the beast. Volume 6 made it extremely explicit with the Adam fight, but the parallels extend well beyond it.
This masterpost is basically a list of all bumbleby/batb parallels that were woven into Blake and Yang’s story as individuals and together. Undercut because it’s long.
1. Eyes as windows to the soul...no really
Corny section title aside, one of the parallels that I haven’t seen being talked abt as much is how eyes/looking each other in the eye and recognizing the other/seeing the truth laid out there is a recurring and focal theme for both BatB and the bees.
In BatB one of the first things Belle gets a glimpse of before Beast fully reveals himself is his eyes:
Tumblr media
And afterwards, when she sneaks into the west wing, not knowing those were his quarters, she finds a torn portrait of him pre-curse:
Tumblr media
And we get this significant pause where Belle has this moment of almost recognition. You can tell she’s trying to place why what’s left of the portrait, a.k.a the eyes depicted there, already feel familiar to her:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the curse is lifted and the Beast transforms back into a human, Belle doesn’t immediately trust that this is indeed him. That is, until she sees his eyes:
Tumblr media
We get a pause and a whole close-up because this is a significant beat in the story. Belle knows this is her person because the truth of him is laid out in his eyes and that’s what seals the deal.
The bees have the same thing going on. There are two major instances, which are also incidentally major narrative beats in general and moments in their relationship in particular, of them looking each other in the eye and just. seeing each other, knowing the truth and essence of each other.
The first is the aftermath of the Mercury fight where Blake recognizes that Yang isn’t another Adam waiting to happen:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve talked about this here a bit but this is essentially the moment that seals Blake’s faith in Yang once and for all. And it takes Yang looking her in the eye, laying out the truth before her and letting her choose to believe her.
The second instance is this:
Tumblr media
Which, I don’t know for you but it looks a whole lot like this:
Tumblr media
And it’s after Blake, completely undertaken by the wave of conflicting emotions born out of being forced into killing her lifelong abuser, still feels the pull of his abuse and is absolutely terrified of having Yang take his final words to heart. She’s desperate to have Yang believe her - and Yang, being the emotionally intelligent individual she is, spots it right away and immediately reassures her that she does. Of course she does, Yang knows her, she knows Blake, and no amount of truth twisting and manipulation can change that.
Yang takes the time to pull back and look her in the eyes; it’s this “I see you, I know you” moment that effectively signals the end of the Adam chapter in their story as well as the mending of their relationship.
I really like how the Adam subplot, as it ties in with the development of the bumbleby relationship, is bookended by these two instances of the bees literally seeing each other eye to eye and mirroring each other: Blake sees and believes Yang about the Mercury fight, Yang sees and believes Blake is the person she herself had started to believe she wasn’t because of Adam.
I also really love how this whole coding of eyes=truth comes in clear contrast to Adam always hiding his eyes and how it was made blatantly indicative of how he’s been deceiving people around him and hiding his true identity (“you’re hiding more than your eyes” in Nevermore is really just the icing on top; they couldn’t have made the symbolism more obvious if they tried). Blake never got to know him, the real him; the moment he takes off the blindfold is when he finally sheds the last of the façade that started crumbling post V3. That’s when everyone, the audience included, gets to see him with utmost clarity.
2. Thematic parallel
This ties in with the thematic parallel between bumbleby and batb as romances at large; boiled down to their bare bones, both these love stories are about two individuals who, at first glance, are diametrically opposed, but deep down are more of kindred spirits than they’d first believed.
Both Belle and Yang assert that they crave adventure:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But that’s not what they want, what they really want.
Both Belle and Yang want someone to see them; really see and accept them for who they are.
Beast and Blake want someone that’ll see beyond what they are and see who they are and love them for it.
Beast and Yang both want someone who’ll finally stay after taking in everything that they are.
When you dissect BatB, it’s really about two deeply lonely individuals, isolated because of how different they are from the rest, who crave one genuine connection and find it in each other.
And when you boil it down, bumbleby is about two deeply wounded, lonely girls finally being seen for who they are and fitting together.
Deep down it really is about this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Narrative beats
Beyond general themes, batb and bumbleby share a good number of narrative beats that really nicely parallel each other, sometimes even visually to a T:
 - Beast/Yang sinks in despondency after Belle/Blake leaves:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
 - Belle/Blake leaves to reunite with her family and gets unsolicited but not unneeded help:
Both Chip and Sun surreptitiously follow Belle and Blake respectively (Sun sneaking into the ship after he followed Blake mirrors Chip sneaking into her bag as Belle leaves, Belle literally calls Chip a stowaway when he reveals himself). Both are well-meaning but have… creative ways of helping but their help still proves vital.
Also both ask THE question (and have mistaken assumptions about its actual answer):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think my favorite thing about the roles Sun and Blake play in each other’s respective fairy tales/myths is that they’re deeply platonic/familial bonds. Sun is the Chip to Blake’s Belle, who grow to be basically family to each other during Belle’s stay in the castle, and Blake is the Tang Sanzang to Sun’s...Sun Wukong, who are portrayed to have a mentor/disciple relationship. They were always meant to be a friendship in the same way bumbleby has always been a romance.
 - Gaston/Adam comes up with a ploy to hurt Belle/Blake’s family when she comes back to get to her:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
 - The Fight:
I think multiple people have pointed out all the visual parallels between the bumbleby vs Adam fight and the final Beast vs Gaston confrontation (you can find one most extensive video of it here courtesy of @dumbgaypower). It’s incredible how every beat of both fights match other.
Still a parallel masterpost wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t point out a few:
Gaston/Adam getting impatient with the Beast/Yang’s lack of aggressivity which is so in line with the toxic masculinity he’s meant to embody:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Adam/Gaston kicking down Yang/Beast and her keeping an eye/being aware of Blake/Belle’s presence:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this bad boy right here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TL;DR: the bees are based on the most romantically focused fairytale; they match said fairytale beat for beat; they were always meant to be a love story; they’re gay and in love and crwby personally gave me my rights.

I still don’t think your ready for it, but here’s my Batb Cruise show review:
Yes you read the title completely right, I was made aware of this a day or two ago but apparently one of the Disney Cruises is doing/did beauty and the beast the musical but based upon the live action movie. So naturally a massive fan of the live action I was both shocked and wildly confused, lucky for me I found a video on the entire performance(likely taken from a cruise tv.) from what I skimmed over it looks like instead of full body suits to look like they are it’s going to be regular (human outfits.) and then puppets, so I am Really really interested to see how this goes.
The timing is a little off we skip the prologue (Aria etc.) and start straight in How does a moment last forever... are they placing Belle after it? It was before in the movie. Wait oh my god he’s also narrator- it is the prologue! Pulled a sneaky one on ya.
•Adams dramatic sassy hand movements are my entire life (no dance just this art right here.)
•The enchantress looks straight outa Atlantis but I LOVE the effects used omllll
• MARIE THE BAGUETTES.
•who needs her when you’ve got us (LE DUO OMG- it’s the thing.)
•from what I’m seeing it’s a combination of both the animated and live action, as some lyrics/moments are the animated , like Lefou reverted back to his original sorta idiot phase.
•met HER saw HER *kick* we stan.
•Lefou just waving his bag in the girls face. Legend lmao.
•a LOT more comedy then the movie. When Gaston drops the Boquet Lefou picks it up and smells it and just melts all cute like. My heart?
•”keep moving old legs.”
•Gaston is also a lot more like the animated, more dumbed down for comedic effect.
•so there’s no Philippe so some dudes took her dads wagon. That’s how jumanji started you know smh.
•PUPPETS IM SCREAMING.
Lumire looks like he’s absolutely losing his mind I’m deadddd. Also Cogsworth’s wig is my entire life.
• ok so the beasts voice- he sounds like a Pirate I’m crying “ee stole me rose matey.”
•belle straight up using the stick like a musket
•OML SO I NOW SEE THE EYES ON THE PUPPET AND IM LOSING MY DAMN MIND.
•storage space! Storage space! For all of Lumiere’s shoes! His shoes yes he had a feel large collection of shoes- he rather likes Heels-
Cogsworth.
What?
Stop talking.
•while my love massages my tight caves.
I’ll massage your caves Gaston!
Who has no one snatched you up yet? (He didn’t say girl :0)
•everyones awed and inspired by au
Gaston placing a hand to his chest.
•Gaston kissing his own portait, no bimbettes Lefou sings their line, no Tom , Dick or stanley that I can see either
•they all start russian dancing instead of the stopping/sword fight. Weird flex but ok.
Now the girls are... is that the cancan?
•Fun cult activity’s with friends
•lefou dreamily gasping over gaston along with the women.
•WHERED THE UKALELE COME FROM?!
• they kept my favorite line :)
•So Gaston has the French flag now? Also Maurice runs in automatically? Damn there goes pacing i guess- like aren’t they supposed to be together for at least awhile before going after her jeez
•why’s every single woman in this show use a super high pitched cutesy voice “YeAaA!” Is the audience one year olds and dogs???
•Gaston was a captain :0 Damn high rank.
•or a Budae *laughing* *distant roar* *s c r e a m *
•Madame de Garderobe has me screaming lmaoooo
•Mrs.Potts was a governess? Wack.
•ok so I cant describe the noise i made
L: OH YES! Darling
P: high pitched giggling.
The stage is still black and I can’t breathe-
They were definitely- whatever the equivalent would be of making out
•This plan is uh Dangerous~
I’m-I’m gay for the featherduster. This is not allowed. THEY ARE SO CUTE I CANNOT FUNCTION.
*more adorable couple giggling*
Cogsworth coughing
•food fashion show.. I cannot... I can’t function.
•Lumiere being dramatic:
Coggsworth: if i had hands, I’d slap you.
•*Whispers*Skin.
That’s- that’s not creepy at all lmao.
C’Est LA SALADE I CANT BREATHE WHATS HAPPENING.
•you lost me 2 verses ago now there’s cheese
•no one:
Plumette giggling and calling out everything:
•HOW IS MADAME DOWNSTAIRS IM SO CONFUSED
•OWWWWWWWWEWWWWWWWWWWW.
That hurts.
•ok so Mrs. Potts being a governess in this version now makes sense as she’s the one to start days in the sun instead of the queen/little Adam
•So Candenza is completely gone from this version????? So Lumierè and Plumette get both love lines from the song. Their still busy being cute as hell tho. (Does this imply their also singers? Pretty sure their still just footman/maid.)
•cogsworth now has Mrs.Potts lines but his voice is great.
•instead of soup it’s tea he I N H A L E and belle looks SO done lmao. Also no library?
•oh jeez yea no library just straight into something there.
•oh so the library is now IN something there, alright.
•Adam just DECKS Lumiere. Idk what that was about lmao - showing he’s nice now by uppercutting a candlestick across the room.
• BELLE:D this dork-
•Hes making jokes now.
•SWORDS. FIGHTING.
•”we love you.” But... everyone is still all-
Ok so either Mrs.Potts is a massive liar or they don’t count
•the dress is low key just as underwhelming as in the film
• Adam is trying *SHOVES CHAMPAGNE IN FACE*
•Plumette keeps running on and off stage idk what that’s about.
•the danceeeee
•Adam keeps talking about his mom
•no evermore ;-; my favorite song and it’s gone for a 5 second day’s in the sun reprise.
I’m wounded.
•belle casually taking a dudes knife to cut them free
•I feel like the mob song is cute down a lot, also Lumiere comes in sliding on his knees. Respect.
•”Gaston help.” Is kinda like nothing now as they have been so comedic. I feel nothing.
•i like the way they executed the final fight (beast/Gaston as servents vs the villages was literally nothing.)
•Lumiere sliding in on his knees again *French accent*YAAAAAAS
•ok so the death scene still hurts me like a truck.
Lumire: guys we did it :)
*literally watches the love of his life, his best friend and other friends die(yes it’s technically death.)*
Everyone steps away from the puppet and turns around, the lighting goes dark I’m - ;-;
•the prince is low key better in the suit the guy playing him is uhhhhhhhh I know the whole point is to look past Appearance but who’s dad is this?
•I’m absolutely SCREAMING. Instead of the dramatic one by one they all pop up together and collectively go :00000 what?! Whoa!
•Lumiere and Plumette low key not even a “hi.” Just kiss and start dancing. Mood.
•Ballet attack part 2 and middle aged prince returns.
•No chip or Madame at the end either! :0
•oh wait here’s chip!
Cogsworth melting in the background is me
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬/𝐏𝗼𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐥𝐬
so as I’ve said it’s like a mash up of the original and the remake with some of the choices it makes, I think it really makes or breaks some of the characters.
Lefou/Gaston-
Both of them fell back more into their Cartoon counterparts of : here to be the bad guy, here to be funny. Both of them become so overly comedic that you wouldn’t be able to tell who’s line was whos if you were shown them without being told. I think , funny as they were it negatively effected their character’s. Same case with the beast he definitely became more comedic if anything at all.
Lumierè/Cogsworth/Plumette-
These guys I think are the opposite. I think having a slight bit more of the animated made both banter and flirting hike it’s way up. Cogsworth and Lumierè were more showy in their banter , while Lumierè and Plumette were much more loud and showy with banter. Also the accents are art. Mrs. Potts was there to be the mother like figure and not given much of herself
Rip to chip who had like 4 lines and didn’t even show up to seconds before curtain. Also Madame de Garderobe who was there to be a good singer and nothing more as she lost her whole arc.Rip to Cadenza, Frou frou , Chapu and Philippe for being written out all together.
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬/𝐭𝐡𝗼𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬
As I’ve said the changes either make or break some moments, like adding a overwhelming amount of comedy like the og movie. As funny as it was it did not have that same weight/gravity the remake did in its more serious/emotional scenes like the death/human again scenes I felt little here and Gaston betraying Lefou. As well as having the more serious/soft songs as the remake really backfired with so much comedy, and not even the more Witty subtle humor of the movie. Funny, but odd as character choice
So I know you had to cut it down a lot in order to fit it on stage however, nessisary parts or songs (evermore ;-;) were completely excluded likely do to the slightly unessisary over extension of dance numbers in Gaston(that didn’t need it) and Be our guest. Which could have been time better spent.
The servants are the absolute saving grace of this musical. The costumes! Oh!(again cogsworths wig is my life.) the humor! The acting, the singing, the relationships- all of it- all of it. They carry the entire thing, and if I’m honest it’s mainly Lumierè, Cogsworth and Plumette, occasionally Mrs. Potts if you stretch.

Rebel Rose and Belle’s Role in the French Revolution
So, I learned a few days ago that Disney made a book called “Rebel Rose” which involved Belle and the French Revolution. From what I heard, it goes into depth toward the French Revolution, and Belle at least had some sympathies towards the Jacobin cause (though that said, she also seemed to at least be smart enough to realize the violence was not good from what I heard).
I had a similar idea regarding a Beauty and the Beast sequel that dealt specifically with the French Revolution. However, I would have ultimately made Belle more into a villain, largely because I can’t help but get the nagging feeling that she ultimately would buy into Voltaire, Diderot, Rousseau, and Sade’s various books, drink the kool aid, and basically backstab Adam and... well, let’s just say she probably would end up doing essentially the same thing to her village that Sephiroth did upon reading research books into his origins at Nibelheim in Final Fantasy VII:

youtube
The main reason I think, actually, no, not even think or know this, I outright FEAR this is because that’s exactly what people of Belle’s intellectual caliber and even her outlook in life ended up doing during that time. Robespierre, before helming the Jacobin Club, was a lawyer, a man who was very well read, and most certainly had to have read the likes of Voltaire and Diderot, not to mention D’Alembert and especially Rousseau, and the last of whom was cited as his biggest influence. Jean Paul Marat likewise was an aspiring doctor, also read Voltaire and Rousseau, was primarily influenced by the latter, and he became a demagogue and orchestrating up and out lynch mobs via his pamphlets before being stabbed to death inside his own bathtub. And then we get into Jean-Baptiste Carrier, aka the guy responsible for the drownings and republican marriages. He was trained at a Jesuit school (before the Jesuits were expelled from France largely thanks to the Philosophes’ radical anti-Christian agendas), and became a clerk and lawyer, and eventually became enamored enough with Sade’s writings that he specifically referred to his republican marriage executions as being the torch of philosophy, a key phrase by Sade (and Sade, unlike Voltaire and the other Enlightenment philosophes, was very much active during the revolution. In fact, he arguably helped jumpstart it by inciting a mob via a makeshift megaphone at the Bastille). There’s also Joseph Le Bon, well known for his massacre at Arras, who taught rhetoric, literally, being a professor in the subject, and thus most certainly was well-read, and he also ended up drinking the kool-aid regarding the Philosophes. In particular Sade, whom his grisly murders at Arras were in fact partly modeled after Sade’s infamous book “120 Nights of Sodom”. Even stripped the freshly guillotined corpses of his victims naked and put them in poses mirroring that of Sade’s illustrations in that book. That’s just a few examples that come to mind right now. What’s worse? There’s sufficient evidence put forth by Timothy Dwight and Augustin de Barruel that the Philosophes, in particular Voltaire, D’Alembert, and Diderot, specifically counted on France’s huge amount of literacy specifically to engineer this horror, which they succeeded in post mortem. Even took over the French Academy during their lifetime. And don’t get me started on the Vendee massacres. Belle I fear will ultimately succumb to the exact same path ultimately, especially going by some of her behavior in the original film. Doesn’t help either that we don’t get an actual indication that she practiced discernment of literature (yes, she might be a huge bibliophile, but there’s a huge difference between being well-read and actually being able to discern what’s a good book and what’s bad), not to mention the villagers, who are compared unflatteringly to her throughout the film, are depicted as Christians based on some of their statements, which creates the implication that she’s an atheist and she’s better in that regard (well, at least in the original film and certain extension media. The remake fortunately fixed that bit by having her get books from a church, with the implication that she might have some respect for the church for that reason, plus her being born during the 1731 plague, meaning she’s probably dead by the time the revolution actually occurs). It doesn’t merely end there either. Marx admits he was directly inspired by the Philosophes and the Jacobins when creating Communism. And even Vladimir Lenin, aside from obviously basing his actions on Marx’s ideology, made it VERY clear he was inspired by the French Revolutionaries, the Jacobins in particular.
On that note, another reason I fear her future of becoming a Jacobin or at least buying wholesale the propaganda and parroting it is also related to her intellectual caliber in a different sort. Sartre, for example was praised as a very intelligent man in France, a philosophical giant, and he ended up spending his time singing praises for mass murderers and tyrants, including infamously stating that Che Guevara was the most complete human being of the century. And on that note, might as well cite Big Boss and Kazuhira Miller in Peace Walker and that game’s rather shameful praising of that monster as if he were the second coming of Christ (I’ll do a topic on THAT at another time, probably closer to his death day, or at least the anniversary of Peace Walker’s release):
youtube
Bear in mind, Big Boss already encountered someone like him in person, Colonel Volgin, didn’t like him at all, and was implied to not be fond of Communism at all in the games. Yet he sang praises who, given his CIA background, would have at least known about his more inhumane and evil nature, including his role in the CMC. If Big Boss could fall for that tripe, I don’t think Belle can stand any chance on that front.
I’ll give Emma Theriault credit in that she at least seemed to imply she didn’t support the Jacobin’s actual murderous actions, but on the other hand, I’m not sure if that’s what Linda Woolverton and/or Paige O’Hara thought either. For all I know, they probably support her becoming a mass murdering Jacobin. I would have asked Paige O’Hara during Comic Con Atlanta a couple of years back had her appearance been an actual meet and greet (settled for Jasmine’s voice actor instead as I mentioned in a prior post). As far as Linda Woolverton, I actually planned on tracking her down in California last year, using my cousin’s wedding as an opportunity to do so (as well as visit the Screenwriter’s Guild Association archives to research the BATB materials and to an extent Star Wars), but the COVID19 pandemic (or as I’d call it, scamdemic) killed those plans, and I suspect I probably won’t be able to do it this year either with what Biden’s pretty much doing in office. Until I actually verify it from them whether my view of Belle or Emma’s view of Belle is correct, I’m keeping Belle at arms length. If anything, I’d argue the triplets are more trustworthy than her at this point since they’re at least Christian and don’t show much signs of being swayed by the mob based on their absence in the climax of the original film (and incidentally, said fanfic would have had them as the main protagonists).

The Jellicle cats as Disney princesses/princes? 👀💗
YES!!!
Tugger: The Beast/Adam (he’s a little bit on the fiery side, and he sometimes is a little too obsessed with himself, but he is an absolute softie and cares about the people he loves and would stop at nothing to protect them)
Misto: Belle (because I’m a sucker for BatB AUs) or Elsa (he loves his family, but he’s also hesitant with his powers. He wants to do the right thing, and he wants to be accepted but at the same time be himself around the tribe)
Victoria: Ariel (mainly because Ariel moves so fluidly and is just so sweet, but also very romantic, and she also loves her family and cares about everyone. She’s adventurous, but she’s also cautious)
Plato: Eric (because he has a heart of gold and is a SWEET BOY WHO IS AN ANGEL AND IS PERFECT AND WOULD 100% HELP SOMEONE IN NEED) (I'm sorry I have a lot of Plato feels right now)
Munku: Li Shang (he’s kind of obsessed with protecting the tribe, and it takes a while for him to finally realize that he likes Demeter, and he has to learn to balance protecting the tribe and taking care of himself)
Demeter: Cinderella (because she’s quiet, but she also knows what’s right and she knows to stick up for herself. She has a huge heart and even though she’s experienced trauma, she still holds her head up high and believes in herself)
Bomba: Merida (fiery redhead who takes shit from no one and is crazy protective of her family? sounds like Bomba 100%)
Alonzo: Charming (I just really see him as more of a classic, pretty-boy, kind-hearted prince than anything) or Naveen (because one of his description words is vain, but he’d definitely get over himself for the right woman)
Cassandra: Tiana or Esmeralda (she’s a no-nonsense queen who knows her worth and won’t take shit from anyone, but who also will be strong in her beliefs and who won’t allow for anyone to be talked down to or treated like they’re lesser because of their appearance or upbringing)
Jemima: Moana (a sweet girl who would do anything to protect her family, and who isn’t afraid to do whatever it takes to achieve that goal)
@ other people:
add any other cats if you want to! These are the only ones I could really think of, but feel free to add more!

💙Smoshblr December Asks Day 20💛
What are your top 3 fandoms outside of smosh?
Bonus: What are your top 3 fave ships of all time? (don’t have to be from the same fandoms as the above answers)
i don’t really consider myself in the “fandom” because the “fandom” is a graveyard that i sit and scream in and sometimes people stop by to scream with me. BUT: of course my beloved wife, beauty and the beast 2017
the legend of vox machina. definitely a lot less this year as smosh has slowly taken the second place position that it had in 2022, BUT i’ve no doubt it’ll come back full force when season 3 drops :”)
fuckin. i don’t know? i’m really not great at engaging in fandom i just kinda do my thing and sometimes people interact with me (and i appreciate it !!!!!!!!!!)
ships:
adam/belle from batb 2017
“beauty” and the “beast” from batb 2017
dan stevens’ and emma watson’s characters from batb 2017

Made-up fic name: How does a moment last forever?
BATB AU BATB AU BATB AU BATB AU
yeah so au where billy becomes a beast and freddy is the beauty and they hate each other at first but they eventually become friends and billy falls in love with freddy but thinks freddy doesn't feel the same bc the curse still hasn't been lifted and yeah
idk if it'd be in the disney batb timeline or like a modern thing
but billy would be actually beastly with fur and shit, not like what they did for the beastly movie (totally different from the book) or the batb tv series (beastly jay ryan is still hot even if he isn't Full Beast)
and the rest of the shazamily makes up the enchanted objects (or whatever the modern equivalent would be, if i went with that timeline)
and black adam as gaston with sivana as lefou bc i said so (and people lowkey wanted dwayne as gaston for disney's remake so it works; and Yes i'd still include the gay lefou aspect bc why not)

A personal Beauty and the Beast 2017 Retrospective
I was watching Beauty and the Beast 2017 again last night while my health problems were yet again keeping me from being able to sleep. And I hate to say it, but looking back on it now...? I see why so many people disliked it. I don't agree with the hate and venom some people spewed (and still spew) about it, but I understand the level-headed, objective criticisms more now.
Disney has raised the bar for themselves with Aladdin 2019, period.
Let me be clear that this is 100% my personal opinion and I'm not hating on BatB 2017 or anybody who absolutely loves it, and I do still like it overall. I have NEVER been on board with how hateful some people are about the remakes in general. I'm just saying now that we have Aladdin 2019...? It really makes me see what BatB 2017 could have been, and I just wanted to talk about some honest critiques that I now have. Basically:
Disney really could have done so much better.
First and foremost, and I'm really sorry to say it, but they really should have cast someone else as Belle. They went for name recognition instead of someone who really suited the character, and the entire film suffers because of it.
I really do like Emma Watson as an actress and a person, but now that I've seen how good Naomi Scott and Mena Massoud were...? Emma was kind of wooden as Belle. Even when I first saw it in theaters I never stopped thinking "that's Emma Watson" long enough to let her become Belle in my head. She never exuded that gentle warmth that Belle had, and seemed sort of... closed off?
Now that I've seen Mena and Naomi's chemistry...? I don't believe Emma's attraction to Beast as much. I absolutely believe Dan Stevens' attraction to her, mind you, but not the other way around. Emma just seems uncomfortable through the whole movie and I really wonder why.
Her singing is auto tuned to death and sounds very unnatural. I thought that back in 2017, and it's why I never bought the soundtrack. I wonder if that's part of why the casting call for Aladdin required the actors to be able to sing?
Now, I want to make it crystal clear this isn't me putting down one woman in order to elevate another in the case of Emma Watson and Naomi Scott! I don't condone that shit, and there's a difference between doing that and comparing and contrasting the performances of two actors in similar situations. Naomi doesn't need anybody to be put down in order for her to be elevated because she did such a phenomenal job with no comparisons required to showcase it. She blew that role out of the water and made it her bitch.
In the same vein, I'm not putting down BatB 2017 to elevate Aladdin 2019. Aladdin doesn't need comparison in order for it to be elevated. It does that on its own.
When I first saw BatB 2017 I hated the yellow dress because it looks like a damn prom dress and it's the most anticlimactic thing to me visually. It's an icon, and that's really all the better Disney could do? Now that I've seen the gorgeous, lavish costumes that were designed for Jasmine — especially the reimagining of her iconic teal two-piece into that breathtaking, beautiful peacock outfit — and the gorgeous reinterpretation of Ali's arguably iconic getup? THAT is how the costumes should be done in the remakes. Disney could have done SO MUCH BETTER for Belle's gown!
I said it before when the first trailers hit for Aladdin 2019 that the live action remakes all looked kind of fake in a storybook way, like they were one step removed from reality, because that's what BatB 2017 looked like and I was fine with that. But now that I've seen Agrabah and the palace? Disney made them look so REAL that it makes BatB look more phoned in. Adam's castle and the village look like sets. Agrabah is a living, breathing world.
Let me reiterate it again to make it absolutely clear: I still like BatB 2017 overall as a complete package. Maybe not quite as much as I did before, but I don't dislike it by any means. I'm not trying to hate on it OR the cast. BatB 1991 is in my top 5 Disney movies.
But dammit I wish Disney would have put as much effort into it as they did Aladdin 2019.
When I compare the two I can't help but come to the personal conclusion that while it has its highlights and things that were done nicely (I still really love what they did with the enchantress at the end!), BatB 2017 was the medium effort cash grab that the haters accused it of being while on the flip side...? Aladdin 2019 was a reverent pull-out-all-the-stops love letter to the original in addition to the monetary motivation.
And that love and respect made all the difference in the world.
