Finally did a little googling to figure out how fast space travel is in the Dune-iverse prior to The Guild and space-folding engines. This is as exact as 2 mins of googling can be, but the implications of scale are true anyway.

It takes a month to get from Salusa Secundus (home of the free humans) and Earth (Where Erasmus spends a lot of time, and the birthplace of the rebellion against thinking machines and of course, 3rd rock from the sun). Salusa Secundus is in the Gamma Waiping system which is actually a real thing (albeit named differently but recognizably) and its 135 light years from Earth, round numbers bc I didn't click into the actual article and I just want to get a sense of scale.

So Lightspeed is 186,000 miles per second in a vacuum. Which is 669,600,000 mph. 1 year = 364.25 days = 8,742 hours 8742 hours * 669,600,000 miles = 5,853,643,200,000 miles a year. So one light year is 5.8 trillion miles.

The PRE-guild ships make the trip of 135 light years in one month. Let's say 30 days. 5,853,643,200,000 MPY (miles per year!) * 135 years = 790,241,832,000,000 miles. Its 790 trillion miles away. 790,241,832,000,000 miles / 30 days = 26,341,394,400,000 miles per day. 26.3 trillion miles a day. 26,341,394,400,000 / 24 hours = 1,097,558,100,000 miles per hour. 304,877,250 miles per second. 1,639.15x the speed of light!

It seems so incredibly fast when you do the math. 135 light years is an unimaginable distance when we put it into earth-scale terms (miles). But the galaxy is 100,000 light years across (5.8 Trillion x 100,000) so even going 1600 times the speed of light, it still took them a month to traverse 0.00135% of the total width of the galaxy (135LY/100,000LY)

No matter how insanely fast we go, nothing beats 'instant' and while its a duh, doing the proof of the duh is a good way for me to wind down after a shit day!

I KNOW it’s bc David D has the most big wet gentle brown doe eyes ever but Piter in his little wetsuit cap looks so sweet and unassuming and innocent. I need to devour him !

To make a proper Dune movie adaptation the director needs to be a freak and a pervert, but not in the normal, mainstream ways. Our hypothetical cinematic kwisatz haderach (bisexual, ex-Catholic, probably uncut) needs to have gotten his directorial debut by placing hidden cameras in bathrooms before getting bored with that and moving on to his real sexual passions: bureaucratic proceedings from maritime trade disputes, Muslims snorting cocaine, low budget martial arts movies played off of slightly damaged DVDs, and obviously Frank Herbert’s 1965 science fiction novel, Dune. Every shot needs to be constructed as if it’s ravenously horny even if it seems like there isn’t anything to be horny about. The casting and budget:runtime ratio could remain the same, but our hypothetical auteur will insist on three movies, each 4 or 5 hours in length, that properly align with the original three segments of the novel. It is as of yet unclear whether the resulting movies would be “good” but my prescience has revealed to me that they would be the most faithful adaptations of the novel possible. The good news is that our promised director does exist! The bad news is that because America is basically a terrestrial Salusa Secundus, he’s been imprisoned by the State of Maryland since 2005 (for placing hidden camera in bathrooms). Whatever. Denis Villeneuve is a respectable second place pick.

I've been searching for two particular Dune quotes, and I finally found one of them (still looking for the other one about the Sardaukar and Salusa Secundus more generally). Disclaimer: I have NOT watched Dune 2 yet, so I don't know how they are depicted there, but I've always felt that the Sardaukar are extremely supe-coded. And this particular captured dude is... basically Homelander.

Rugi was the last of the daughters born to the Emperor and his Empress Anirul, a Bene Gesserit of Hidden Rank. Her childhood was that of a typical princess of the Emperor of the Known Universe. She was instructed in the ways of the Bene Gesserit almost from birth. She was taught by her mother until it was decided by the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam that Rugi would benefit more at the Mother School on Wallach IX. When her father lost his throne to Paul Atreides, Rugi was secretly happy. Her father deserved everything. Shaddam ordered her to join him on Salusa Secundus, she refused him. He exploded and as her father ordered her to stay at the Mother School until she was assigned as either a wife or concubine. That is where we find her now.

It's really rainy and there's these big pools of what I think is human blood but the religious music they have playing over the loudspeakers 24/7 kinda slaps ngl. Apparently the Emperor's army is here too? Kinda crazy. 4/10 stars, don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon. I could've just gone to Caladan with all this rain.
