I can walk away happy knowing sylki was a moment in time where two hurt characters found someone they could confide in, if only momentarily. They didn’t have to end up together to have been a good thing. I’m personally living for the fact Sylvie can remember Loki as someone who really did choose her AND her freedom.

I haven't played Royal, so all my knowledge is second-hand. Imagine my surprise when I find out that the game makes it a point to differentiate between Phantom Thieves and Gentleman Thieves. That got me thinking: does this distinction exist in the Japanese language?

Hello, thanks for your ask! The answer is that it sort of does. In English, a "phantom thief" and a "gentleman thief" are the same thing—a literary concept of a thief who dresses sharply, probably isn't that evil or means well (though I can think of one extremely malevolent example), and who exists in books, movies and video games.

The term usually translated as "gentleman thief" in P5 is 義賊 gizoku, mainly referring to Ishikawa Goemon, who Yusuke's persona Goemon is based on. While one popular dictionary has gizoku as "gentleman thief", that's more correctly a kaitou—a gizoku is what we'd call a "social bandit", an outlaw accepted by the public for one reason or another. Robin Hood is one example; the Phantom Thieves, at various points in their career, would be another. They're even sometimes referred to in-game as gizoku—as noble outlaws.

kaitou and gizoku both have pages on Japanese Wikipedia—a gizoku is primarily a real-life phenomenon (it lists Ishikawa Goemon, as well as Arsene Lupin and Robin Hood). So when the localisation says "gentleman thief", it means a Robin Hood-style noble outlaw; when it says "phantom thief", it means the literary trope that the Phantom Thieves personify. Even though these ought to be the same thing. Clear as mud, huh?

Here's a messy preview of the practice placement. This part is a lot of fun, but also nerve-wracking because nothing is glued down yet (other than the background papers) and everything slides around if you're not careful.

Like what happened right after I took this picture, when the drawer I keep the developing collages in slid out of its track and everything slid off the left page and onto the right.
