RWBY COMBAT ANALYSIS: MAY MARIGOLD (Preliminary Evaluation)

“Mantle needed me, and to the Marigolds, that meant I wasn't their son anymore. And I made sure that everyone knew that I wasn't their daughter.”

I’m a little late to the party, but who am I to miss out on all the “May” jokes? Today, we’re going to be looking at the Happy Huntress May Marigold…or at least we should be.

Yeah, see, there’s a bit of a problem we have here. Anyone who’s seen my Tier Chart will notice that each Tier has a collection of characters outlined in red, the guide at the top labeling them as “Tentative/Prediction”. This is because, for any number of reasons, I cannot assign a concrete ranking to the character in question, and their current placement is simply an educated guess. Because my analyses are based primarily on examine confirmed feats and accolades, some characters can’t be properly ranked if they don’t have the material I need to draft their statistics. May Marigold is sadly one of these ambiguous situations. Despite being easily one of the best new additions to the cast in Volumes 7 and 8, helped in no small part by the excellent voice work by Kdin Jenzen, we have little to no information regarding May’s combative effectiveness. She has never been seen actively participating in combat, her uses of her Semblance have only been seen strictly for utility purposes, and her standing compared to her contemporaries has never been brought up.

‘But wait!” I hear you cry. “That Mantle bum Forest said that the Happy Huntresses were all top graduates of Atlas Academy! Certainly, that means that they’re some of the best in the setting, right?”

Yes…on paper. What little we do know about May, and Fiona and Joanna for that matter, stems from the overall reputation of the Happy Huntresses, and based on the high standards we have consistently seen from Atlas students, it is very fair to say that they stand as highly respected names among the cast we’ve seen. However, while a solid reputation can certainly help in crafting an analysis, you still need a few feats to prove that your accolades hold weight. Essentially, May has a great reputation, but no substance, which is a bad thing when the substance is what’s needed to make a ranking. As such, this analysis is more of a preliminary report, where I make an educated guess as to May’s capabilities based on the limited information we have. If the semi-speculative nature of this profile is not to your liking, you are forewarned.

PHYSICAL

Originally from the upper crust of Atlas society, May Marigold is a human female, and as an older contemporary of Team RWBY, she is likely in her late 20s to early 30s, still prime years for a professional Huntress. Standing at 5’10”and distinguished by her blue hair, amber eyes, and slim athletic build, May supplements her physique with light armor, specifically padded gloves and a chestpiece worn underneath her brown overcoat, topped off with rugged thigh high boots. While she is certainly very capable physically and in robust health given the rigors of her profession and the harsh tundra of Solitas, we have no athletic showings to draw from to indicate where her areas of expertise could be. However, while she hasn’t demonstrated any major strengths, neither has she shown any significant weaknesses, and I think it goes without saying that she’s not going to be some glass cannon who can’t take a hit. Overall, she’s fit, in her prime, and clearly knows how to conduct herself, meaning she should at bare minimum be able to contend with most of her contemporaries on the back of raw physicality.

RANKING: ≥ Tier 3, Advanced Human Fitness

MARTIAL

In terms of martial combat, May Marigold is armed with a collapsible quarterstaff tipped with magazine-fed crossbows and bayonets, a weapon model she shared with her teammates Joanna Greenleaf and Fiona Thyme. As has already been stated, May has no combat feats to her credit beyond a brief glimpse of her killing a Sabyr in Mantle, so determining her physical technique and tactical sensibilities is next to impossible. The closest thing we have to gauge May’s skill is Robyn Hill’s story about how she (Robyn) was the first one to defeat Joanna in a presumed sparring match, implying that May is below the pair of them, as well as her combat animations in the Amity Arena mobile game suggesting a preference for the polearm function. While this fares well for placing Robyn and Joanna, this is a vague designation as Joanna’s own skill level is unconfirmed and there is no information on how this fight played out. That said, we can estimate based on her few accolades and the circumstances of her career. On the one had, May is certainly not on the level of a true master level fighter like Qrow or Tyrian. Given that she spent the bulk of her time fighting Grimm and supporting Robyn’s political campaign, combined with their isolation from Atlas restricting the range of fighter types she could regularly spar with, she simply wouldn’t have the chance to prepare himself for single combat they way they could. On the other hand, she’s also not likely to just be a better than average fighter like Jaune or Ilia. She IS a distinguished graduate of Atlas Academy, and given the dangers accosting Mantle prior to the fall of Atlas, she would have always been prepared for a harsh battle. Furthermore, the skill gap between Robyn (who was able to hold off Bake and Yang at the same time) and her teammates is not likely significant enough to render a curb stomp, which would put May comfortably above the rank-and -file huntress.

RANKING: ≥ Tier 4, Advanced Application

SPECIAL

May’s Semblance, Invisibility Field, is easily her most well-defined attribute, and her displays are extremely impressive both in the range of applications and the magnitude of her powers. Her participation in Robyn’s convoy raids demonstrated her ability to extend the field to cover an impressively wide area, and its ability to suppress noise enables greater freedom of movement and greatly enhances her stealth capabilities. While the field cannot cloak life signatures and has no defenses against incoming movement, May is almost certainly aware of this and is more the likely careful enough to avoid those kinds of problems. While we have seen several powers and abilities that optimize their user for covert ops and infiltration, I think it is safe to say that May’s field blows every other ability out of the water even without any Dust or gadgets to supplement her loadout. The only limitation I have in ranking this power is that we don’t know how of if this power can be applied to combat, as all her uses so far have been strictly for utility and espionage. If she can regularly exploit her powers in battle, then she could be a truly devastating ambush predator, turning battles into miniature guerrilla wars.

RANKING: ≥ Tier 3, Specialized Combat

TENTATIVE OVERALL RANKING: TIER 4, EXPERT HUNTRESS

While the bulk of what I have said today has been speculation rather than the facts I prefer, I do hold that this is the most likely ranking for May Marigold given everything we know about her. She is a highly capable, well-trained, and experienced Huntress, and while she may not be one of the all-time greats, she is still a respected name, and her reputation had to have come from somewhere. To put her in perspective to her peers, I simply refuse to believe that even a lowballed May is not at the very least comparable to the likes of Blake, Ren and Sun, and if you want to highball her, an argument could be made for her to be a Tier 3 in the mold of Pyrrha, Adam or Yang. As it stands, the only thing that I can see as restricting her overall level is her career circumstances limiting her ability to enter the upper echelon of duelists, Even then, she would still be a major obstacle for most Tier 3s even on her worst day, and on her best, I could even see her threatening some Tier 2s. Though she is in all likelihood a manageable threat to the true masters of her era, she is most certainly still a credible one.

(TLDR, this is my position. Bear in mind this is in the sense of overall combative effectiveness, not power scaling, so take any of the dynamics of the people here with a grain of salt.)

I fully admit I was hesitant to do this breakdown given the lack of concrete information to draw on, but I still wanted to do it due to how much I love May. While her appearances have not lent a lot of insight into her combative capabilities, they have shed plenty of light on her character. T his is a woman who turned away from the life of comfort and luxury she could have enjoyed to dedicate herself to a higher calling, serving those who could not protect themselves, even if doing so meant being shunned by her family. She could have taken the easy path, but instead chose what was ultimately the right one. Despite her outward cynicism and confrontational personality, May is clearly a kind and compassionate woman at her core, and the nature of her story speaks to a remarkable degree of courage and conviction in her principles. And that's without even touching on her status as the series' first transgender character, something her story powerfully reflects and highlights. May has easily become one of my favorite supporting characters, and I can’t thank Kdin enough for bringing her to life.

Ranking RWBY + JNPR ships - Jaune

Hello there, for a little fun I decided I was going to rank all of the inter-RWBY and JNPR ships. So only shipping them with characters from those two teams.

And just give a few quick thoughts I have about the ships and all that.

I decided to start with Jaune and JNPR because, well, there might be a few upsets in the RWBY ones. So we shall save them for another day.

Though a quick note regarding Martial Arcs, I don't really read much male on male stuff. I've just never really been into it. So I'm not going to rank it, because I don't really think I'd be able to give it a fair ranking.

My apologies.

And obviously this is all just my opinion.

But let's begin with the obvious.

1 Jaune x Ruby

What can I say about Lancaster that I haven't said before. It's an adorable, mutually supportive, and dorky as anything ship. I love it. It's fun to write. But you all already knew that, so I shall not ramble on about it.

2. Jaune x Blake

Knightshade. The best of the Blake x Blond ships. And like the other blond ships Knightshade is kind of an opposites attract situation.

Early Blake's serious aloofness contrasted with early Jaune's well meaning but bumbling attitude works well. Though I don't feel they differ so much as to be complete opposites where their flaws feed into each other.

It's somewhat similar to Ladybug really. Where in Ladybug you have Ruby sort of helping Blake find direction. Being the guiding arrow as it were. And I do think Jaune provides that stability Blake needs as well as being able to loosen her up a bit like Ruby.

And I think Blake would really help Jaune sort of find his confidence. Supporting him and generally helping him come out of his shell a bit.

Though they both do share the trait of not really wanting to ask for help. At least initially.

I think they would have a very healthy relationship as well. With Blake learning to communicate her needs a little better, and trying to understand Blake better. Adorable. Lots of cuddling. Very mutually supportive.

The only thing that keeps it from being a 10/10 for me, is that I don't really see Blake spending enough time with Jaune, with the canon setup, for her to be really interested in Jaune. So you do need to find a way to force them to spend more time with each other at first before they really start spending time with each other regularly.

3. Jaune x Yang

Dragonslayer. The steady and reliable guy that Yang needs. The push out of his comfort zone that Jaune needs.

Yang was one of the earliest people to really believe in Jaune. Really only second behind Pyrrha. So I think that having someone who is always in his corner and willing to direct with him and tell him if he's being an idiot would really help Jaune.

I think Yang would see Jaune someone, who isn't Ruby, that she could really trust and probably be more honest with than she is with Ruby. What he lacks in skill he makes up for in always being willing to try and put in effort. And I'd imagine she'd appreciate him seeing Yang more than her yangs if you catch my drift.

Though really I'd say Dragonslayer really hits it's stride post fall. Once they've both had a chance to mature a bit.

A decent bit of that being that I don't think Yang would be interested in Jaune at Beacon. Except for maybe a few years into it if the fall never happened. So Beacon era Dragonslayer gets a 7/10, but post fall and Dragonslayer as a whole gets,

4. Jaune x Nora

If I would have done this list a little over a month ago, Nora's Arc probably wouldn't be as high. But honestly, it is a really fun ship to write.

Nora, of course, brings a lot of energy to whatever relationship she's in. And I think Jaune does a good job at working with that energy. Not feeding into it too much like Ruby would, but also not chaffing with it like Blake would.

Howlingday could probably give you a better synopsis of why Nora's Arc works.

It's fun. It's sweet. It's a bit horny in my case. I really do enjoy it.

5. Jaune x Weiss

White Knight, 2/3 of the Pyrrha x Jaune x Weiss love triangle.

Jaune sort of acting as Weiss' window into the normal world. With him being more that willing to give her the love that she sorely lacked growing up.

Behind Lancaster I do feel that White Knight has the best development in the show. From unrequited love to friendship and mutual trust. Though I can see why Jaune's actions during Beacon would turn some people off it.

I don't really have much to say about it. It's a fairly well developed ship with an unfortunately rocky start that can be very cute.

6. Jaune x Pyrrha

Ah, Arkos. The ship that wasn't meant to be. Obviously the most popular ship for both characters.

I like it. I think they work well together and they would be cute together and I've read some very well done Arkos stuff.

I just don't particularly care for any of the partner ships.

I still like it, just don't love it.

In conclusion, Jaune works well with all of the RWBY and JNPR girls. I could see him having a relationship with any of them, though I think a few have a higher barrier to entry than others.

I shall be back with Nora some other time.

unpopular opinion but I think RWBY needs to make some scarier Grimm. the Nuckelavee was GOOD. the Apathy was GREAT. The Hound was STELLAR. but idk I think there needs to be more horror-esque Grimm. I want to be afraid to turn off the lights

One of my favorite things about Rwby

Is this dynamic

Ruby Weiss and Blake all have world altering importance

And yangs just like a very determined older sister

Yang just wants her family all safe and happy and would happily die to ensure this

Yangs just like “this is my found family” and it’s like the most important people in the world

Not that this is at all new she’s just like surrounded by them her uncle is one of the best huntsmen alive despite being falling over drunk all the time considering he does all of ozpins missions personally and always by himself Ravens so good of a criminal she was on salems radar plus she’s MAGIC and can turn into a damn bird AND so yangs gif that in her I guess + the whole maiden thing summers super important somehow connected to salem as well ironwood who was the general for a WHILE was so close to qrow he might be her or rubys god father ozpin liked strq so much he gave two members magic so he might be a godfather too cause he seems to be really close to the family too

She’s like a magnet

And Yangs still just kinda there and she doesn’t consider any of these people like high and mighty or anything for being so important

She talks to ironwood super casually for the highest ranking military commander ever when he visits her after she becomes a criminal in v3 Qrows just her uncle when she speaks to Raven she’s totally ok with the idea of beating up her entire clan of criminals to get what she wants and then doesn’t respect a THING she says even after the reveal that MAGIC IS REAL and then when they Talk again after Raven joins salem, the bad guy and reveals she’s the MAIDEN which is super powerful yang insults her over and over with only one of her arms like she’s in no danger and then when she confronted ozpin/ Oscar about what Raven told her she gives him no special treatment for being a magical wizard that her entire family (minus Raven) trusts to make any decisions

Yang makes no exceptions no one is special yang would look the gods in the eyes and go “fuck off” and see nothing wrong with that

why you should vote for vriska in the 2023 tumblrwoman election

@lutzlig is hosting a series of polls to determine who the ultimate tumblr woman is. love her or hate her, here is why she is objectively the most fitting candidate for this title:

1. she's canonically attracted to women all throughout the homestuck series as well as transfem in pesterquest. SHE HAS A GIRLFRIEND!! she is without a doubt an LGBTQ icon

2. THIS IS THE HOMESTUCK WEBSITE. homestuck ABSOLUTELY dominated tumblr during its peak. homestuck is an integral facet of tumblr's early culture, don't forget your heritage. homestuck was even ranked #6 in the top webseries of tumblr in 2022, surpassing other popular media such as MBMBAM, heartstopper, WTNV, hazbin hotel, HLVRAI, sanders sides, RWBY, and TMA. we were here from the beginning and we're here to STAY. and vriska has proven that she has stood the test of time.

3. she's instantly recognizable. practically everyone who's been online during the 2010s has heard of her one way or another due to just how prevalent she is. you could even argue that she's the most recognizable homestuck character out of the entire cast.

4. she invented an entirely new genre of discourse. we all know that she's infamous for frequently starting arguments on forums so drawn-out and aggressive that they had to be locked. people still argue about her TODAY. after THIRTEEN YEARS!!! she is perfect for tumblr

5. she's an incredibly interesting and unique character. she's somehow both a protagonist and an antagonist simultaneously. you want to hate her and you want to feel bad for her and you want to see her die and you want to see her come back to life. her characterization is so complex and nuanced, she's both a victim of abuse and an abuser. she breaks all rules and expectations. you never know what she'll do next and there is nobody else quite like her

6. her personality embodies tumblr's culture perfectly. she's a nerd. she's a gamer. SHE'S WEIRD. she's an outcast. she roleplays. everyone hates her. everyone loves her. she's bold and she's brash and she'll only go down kicking and screaming and fighting until the bitter end. they've tried to kill her so many times but she always sticks around, just like our near and dear website
