Now You See Me 3 News: The Now You See Me franchise is going ahead with the director of Venom set to helm the project. Bringing to life the unexpected Venom character for its feature film debut, the same director will now be breathing new life back into this magic/heist film franchise. The first two films in the franchise were moderate successes, and with confirmation now of Ruben Fleischer directing Now You See Me 3, the show will apparently go on.

The Now You See Me movies is all about a group of illusionists planning elaborate heists under the guise of magic shows. The first film starred Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco & Mark Ruffalo in leading roles. The sequel added Daniel Radcliffe to the mix as well. The movies blended a bit of the con man/heist movie formula mixed in with amazing illusions and magic for a pretty interesting watch.

Believe it or not, it’s been ten years since Ruben Fleischer dropped an entertaining undead comedic bomb on the world in the form of Zombieland, an original look on a genre with a long and storied history.  With Zombieland: Double Tap on the horizon, I felt it was time to revisit one of my favorite films in preparation.  

Two months into a zombie-based plague that has taken over the United States, caused by a bad burger at a gas station, survivors are learning to adapt to the newly christened Zombieland that they must now survive in.  College student Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) is attempting to traverse from his college in Austin back home to Ohio, in hopes that his parents have survived.  Along the way, he runs into Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), a rough and tumble loner with a penchant for killing zombies, only matched by his desire for a Twinkie.  The two join forces on their journey east, where they run into Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), a pair of con artists that provide a new set of obstacles and challenges for Columbus and Tallahassee.  Naturally, Columbus begins to develop feelings for Wichita, leading all four members of the motley crew to form an odd and unconventional ‘family’ that can take care of one another in a world slowly devolving into chaos.

Although zombies are the clear and present focus of the film, the comedic tone is applied early and heavy, which allows the film to be funny while embracing the natural tone of the zombie film without the juxtaposition being jarring or off-putting.  These comedic beats are hit in natural ways (ie. via dialogue), but the true joy comes in the ridiculous premises that are embraced, like Tallahassee’s aforementioned fixation on Twinkies, or Columbus and his raging obsessive compulsive disorders that make him oddly neurotic in a world where instinct and survival should drive you.  The neurotic nature is also balanced against Columbus being a hopeless romantic, which is also a hindrance to his ability to focus on the task at hand, which is survival.

From my understanding of the commentary, Fleischer originally pitched Zombieland as a TV series, and you can still see some of the elements of this decision present in the finished film.  Columbus as a narrator is an obvious holdover from this stage, as is the wonderful reference of Zombie Kill of the Week.  The beats that the story hits could easily be broken up and expanded upon, creating an eight episode series (or something thereabouts) out of these moments : Tallahassee meets Columbus, the origin of Columbus, the search for a Twinkie, the introduction of Wichita and Little Rock, getting revenge on Wichita and Little Rock, the Bill Murray incident, the romantic tension between Columbus and Wichita, and the final showdown would make a good run.

Narratively, I loved the tool of using Columbus’ system of rules for survival, including the infamous ‘double-tap’.  These rules are driven home by the sleek integration of visual text cues that fit into the real world for both context and style.  The cast is minimal and intimate, with everyone outside of our top-billed characters essentially being zombies outright or succumbing to the zombie plague.  The comedic tone is doubled-down on with whimsical moments of music video-esque montages for the small moments of normalcy that the group gets to take part in.  The tool of using aliases works extremely well, especially when the revelations about Tallahassee and his motivations come to light.

Jesse Eisenberg and his neurotic nature somehow work perfectly for Zombieland, as he becomes a protagonist that the average individual can relate to, especially in regards to such an extreme situation.  Woody Harrelson is all the way in on his character, displaying the reckless nature that would come with a rebel given the green light to go kill crazy in a zombie-infested situation.  Emma Stone somehow manages to find a way to instill her natural charm into her role while maintaining an edge needed to make her believable as a survivor.  Abigail Breslin provides a different look from her introductory role in Little Miss Sunshine, shedding the adorableness and innocence for deceit and lack of concern for anyone other than Wichita.  Amber Heard has a brief early appearance, and Bill Murray has one of the best cameos in film history.

If Zombieland: Double Tap comes remotely close to holding its own with the first installment of the series, then I believe we’re all in for a real treat.  It will be interesting to see if the gap of time between films is addressed at all, or if they will pick up right where they left off, but either way, I’m in for the ride.

Venom (2018) – 9.5/10 – Eddie Brock, a former reporter, finds himself attached to a symbiote while trying to uncover the secrets of a big company, Life Foundation. Eddie must now learn to live with Venom and learn how to use his new superpowers to stop Riot, another symbiote that wants his species to survive by invading Earth. The movie, awesome. Great effects, good story. Very funny. Problem? What happenedwith the movie being a Rated R film? I heard it was supposed to be a rated R film but at the end, it was just rated PG13.  While watching the movie, I was feeling that it should have been rated R. Anyways, the film was great, I really did enjoy this Venom, compare to the one I saw in Sam Raimi’s Spider Man 3. I mean, that was the only live action adaptation of Venom until this film, so of course, I was expecting a Venom in which would be creepy, trying to find a way to defeat Spider Man, sorry not a good comic book reader I guess. But when I actually saw this film, was completely impressed of Venom’s ability. Yes, I knew there were other symbiotes, but actually I have never paid too much attention to the others except for Carnage. Oh before I forget, there is a post credit scene with Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady, who I am still debating if it was a good choice for an actor to play this character, because Cletus in the future becomes CARNAGE. The world has enough superheroes. Embrace your inner anti-hero. Alien symbiote Venom comes to earth and teams up with journalist Eddie Brock, together they fight another symbiote, Riot, bonded with Carlton Drake, before more symbiotes can be brought to earth. To me, Venom was just Spider-Man in a black suit (omg that sounds terrible🤦🏼‍♀️), like that’s all I remember about him from watching the cartoon as a kid, I don’t think I even realized he made an appearance in the third Tobey Maguire Spider-Man film (though #TomHardy > Topher Grace.) That being said, I do definitely wish I read more comics with each super hero/comic book movie that comes out or that I see. Talking to people who’ve actually read the comics/know Venom’s history/origins - this wasn’t accurate at all, and could definitely have used more Spider-Man; though Brock/Venom were great (the physicality of this role for Hardy - omg) and Venom was funny. Both symbiotes reminded me of the T-1000 and Michelle Williams seemed to act past Hardy, like she was in a different movie - though that little bit where she was Venom was nice. I remember there being some cool scenes/action from Riot at the Life Foundation/the rocket launch. That fight at the end - oh boy.
