HALLOWEEN ENDS: Satisfying, Complex Conclusion to the Halloween Saga
Tumblr media
With David Gordon Green's Halloween Ends--the story which began in 1978 with the release of John Carpenter’s terrifying, suspenseful Halloween--comes to a satisfying conclusion.
The end of the revitalized Halloween trilogy which began in 2018 with the new sequel to the original film, explores Laurie Strode’s (Jamie Lee Curtis) journey to live her life away from the constant fear of Michael’s inevitable return time and time again.
Halloween Ends examines how the presence of evil lived within Michael now roams free and permeates every corner of Haddonfield–living in the subconscious of every resident, leading to disastrous accidents sparked by the fear of Michael being around every corner. The evil spreads its way through the town, impacting how everyone lives with the constant fear of the boogeyman's return.
Halloween Ends is a great conclusion to this story of Laura and the evil she fights against throughout her life. The film asks: Will Laurie finally find some peace and quite–some time to truly live her life?
Complex, Believable Performances
Halloween Ends gives us everything we could hope for in this final installment. We see glimpses of our favorite final girl having a moment to catch her breath. Jamie Lee Curtis gives an amazing performance which explores how Laurie has grown as a person.
Tumblr media
Seeing a character we have watched throughout the Halloween franchise fight for her life–and the lives of her loved ones–stand up and let pent up emotions out in the open, is cathartic and freeing. Jamie Lee Curtis's performance is exhilarating as a character who finally has had enough and releases all the emotions she has been keeping inside.
Halloween Ends boasts challenging, captivating performances of complex, well-written characters who question their life as well as the history and overpowering pull toward evil in their hometown.
Andi Matichak returns as Allyson–who now lives with her grandmother Laurie Strode. Halloween Ends explores her character more intimately–examining how growing up in this family–and Haddonfield–has impacted who she is and what she wants out of her life.
One of the standout performances in Halloween Ends is Rohan Campbell as Corey Cunningham–a young Haddonfield resident- who comes under fire from the town after a mysterious and deadly night.
Campbell brings the complexity of his character to the foreground. We see Corey as an awkward, but well-meaning kid, trying desperately to deal with how the evil of Haddonfield permeated his subconscious during that fateful night. Corey’s accident, which begins the film, highlights how Haddonfield residents are always looking over their shoulder, waiting for the worst to happen–waiting for Michael’s return, even when he’s nowhere to be seen.
Throughout the film, Corey tries to handle the outcome of that night, leading to a complex and challenging role which Rohan Campbell portrays perfectly from every angle.
Gore and Creative Kill Scenes
Halloween Ends does not skimp on gory and intense kill scenes which harken back to the suspense which made us all fall in love with this iconic horror franchise with Carpenter’s 1978 horror classic.
The horror of Halloween Ends erupts beautifully from well-crafted suspense and a dark, gritty atmosphere capturing how evil seeps into Haddonfield.
The cinematography throughout Halloween Ends captures both the darkness of the holiday along with the joy of costume parties–and the warm, yet menacing glow of jack o' lanterns.
Tumblr media
The visual world of Halloween Ends all bursts from one central location–which helps create a lived-in and scary world where we expect to see Michael Myers emerge from the shadows at any moment. The bridge–which was filmed in Sylvania, Ga–used within the film acts as a hub for the town’s evil as well as the film’s strong visual tone.
Tumblr media
Halloween Ends builds suspense beautifully from its opening scene and continues throughout all of its kill scenes–which are both brutal and creative. Every moment of gore builds from an overwhelming sense of suspense, and utilizes the atmosphere and location of each moment well to create unique scenes that are both terrifying and unique.
Halloween Ends maintains a strong visual style throughout the film both in its most horrific scenes as well as in its scenes which capture the bright lights and excitement of the holiday. Neon lights, motorcycle rides, and the dark, open road recall juvenile delinquent films of the 1950s–brought to even more through the performances of Rohan Campbell and Andi Matichak during these moments.
Conclusion
Halloween Ends is a perfect conclusion to the Halloween franchise and is a fun, suspenseful trip inside the haunting world of Michael Myers and Haddonfield. Halloween Ends is a wonderful celebration of the season–both its tricks and treats–giving us spooky atmospheres, complex performances–especially from Jamie Lee Curtis, Rohan Campbell, and Andi Matichak–and an amazing cameo horror fans are sure to love.

Halloween Ends (2022)
"Four years after her last encounter with masked killer Michael Myers, Laurie Strode is living with her granddaughter and trying to finish her memoir. Myers hasn't been seen since, and Laurie finally decides to liberate herself from rage and fear and embrace life. However, when a young man stands accused of murdering a boy that he was babysitting, it ignites a cascade of violence and terror that forces Laurie to confront the evil she can't control."
A film that is supposed to end a long-running franchise is always one to be looked at carefully. Does it live up to the previous films? Is it done in the appropriate style, honouring the way the films before were made? Are the characters still believable in-universe? In short this film answers all of these with a resounding yes.
I walked into this in the way everyone should. I was expecting certain things. I knew i wasn't going to see high-brow cinema. I went in with the Halloween franchise firmly in mind, not hoping for anything different, and I got everything I wanted......and more I hadn't seen coming. I'm going to avoid spoilers so won't say too much more about that. All I'll say is go in with the appropriate expectations and you shouldn't be disappointed.
Jamie Lee Curtis.......what can I say about one of the original Scream Queens? There are very few actors that can claim to have played the same role in a long running, successful, franchise over 44 years, and yet she has done just that. At the age of 20 she faced off against Michael Myers in one of cinema's most iconic slasher films. She has matured, as a person and as a performer, and this most recent Halloween trilogy has really shown that. She inhabits the skin of Laurie Strode as if she'd never taken it off all those years ago. She plays the role with all the years of terror, and weight, on her shoulders and she is magnificent as she does. She has had a long productive career with a lot of truly memorable roles, but for many people she will always be Laurie Strode....and I hope that is something she will always be proud of.
There is one very important thing to note.....unlike Halloween kills this is not a balls to the wall murder fest. Michael Myers, skilfully performed by James Jude Courtney, is not on screen anywhere near as much and, for me, that makes each and every time he appears even more menacing. Courtney has a difficult job. Making a mute character as menacing as he does, purely through his physical presence, must take a lot of intense practice. He pulls it off really well.
Andi Matichak comes back as Laurie's granddaughter for this third film and, along with Rohan Campbell as Corey, faces her own dark journey and struggles. Campbell is an interesting watch as his character struggles in his own life following an accident in which he causes the death of a young child.
There are so many things I could say. Things that are buzzing round my head, but they would all lead to spoilers so I shall let them buzz round my head until I can talk to someone that has seen it.
Overall this film gave me everything I wanted from it, along with some interesting surprises. Is it the best film in the world? No, but where does it rank in the Halloween franchise? For me it's near the top. Though, in a franchise that's had such a spotty history quality-wise, that may not be saying too much. It's getting a really solid 7.5/10 with a recommendation to most people to go see it...
As a slight addendum....as and when they do reboot the franchise (and someone will), please give it the respect it deserves as an icon of cinema, and please wait a decent length of time..

The Halloween Cinematic Universe?
Miramax has received the TV rights to the Halloween franchise. It is currently controlled by Trancas International Films and run by Malek Akkad.
According to Deadline, the deal between Miramax and Trancas includes a Halloween TV series, as well as a first-look agreement for other TV projects for international markets. The Halloween series could have its own cinematic universe that has both film and TV. Marc Helwig, the head of global TV at Miramax will be working with Akkad to oversee the Halloween franchise.
“We couldn’t be more excited to bring Halloween to television,” Helwig said in a statement. “We are thrilled to expand our long and successful partnership with Trancas and the brilliant Malek Akkad in introducing this iconic franchise to a new form of storytelling and a new generation of fans.”
Akkad added, “Trancas International Films is extremely enthused to be expanding our long-standing relationship with Miramax, and we look forward to working with Marc Helwig and the entire team in creating this new chapter.”
This looks to be the latest attempt to turn a beloved horror franchise into a TV series, following on from Chucky on USA. Turning it into a cinematic universe would be a bold step, but Miramax certainly has plenty of material to draw from the franchise's 45 year history.
The Halloween franchise spans 13 films, including the original in 1978. In 2018, a Halloween trilogy was created that focuses on Laurie Strode, the former babysitter of protagonist Michael Myers. The second film in the trilogy, Halloween Kills, was released in 2021 and the final film, Halloween Ends, was released last October.
We wrote in our review, "Despite dialed-in performances from Jamie Lee Curtis and franchise newcomer Rohan Campbell, David Gordon Green’s larger exploration of evil and trauma expands on the conversation he started in Halloween 2018 and Halloween Kills at a rate that Ends doesn’t quite have time to keep up with. There are some memorable kills and reverence for the franchise at large, but it stumbles as it brings it to a close." -George Yang, IGN

The Mosley Review: Halloween Ends
Tumblr media
I think I've said it before and I'm definitely gonna say it again. I believe that out of all the classic slasher franchises, the Halloween franchise is the definition of longevity. It has had so many sequels, reboots, remakes and now a new requel trilogy that ignores all of its canon after the original 1978 film. I have enjoyed alot of them, my top 3 being the original, Halloween: H20 and Rob Zombie's first film, but the franchise has had its pitfalls as well. What I've loved about it is that of course we get some brutal, funny and inventive moments of carnage, but also the amount of genre bending the franchise consistently done over the past 40 years. In this new trilogy we have dealt once again with PTSD, townsfolk being effected and mortality. In this as announced final film in the franchise, it all comes together in a fun and sometimes wacky psychological finale that is reminiscent of the past films in the franchise and with a few sprinkles of Natural Born Killers. There are some truly great moments of viscera and a great deal of dumb decisions made by one of the lead characters that sort of destroyed them.
Tumblr media
Jamie Lee Curtis returns one last time as the iconic final girl Laurie Strode and I loved that she had tried to move on with her life as a survivor. It has been a long time since Laurie truly had a smile on her face, but it doesn't take long for that smile to drop off. Laurie has been on a epic journey over the past 40 years and this was definitively the best her character has ever been. Andi Matichak returns as Laurie's granddaughter Allyson Nelson and I liked her character up to a point. She tried to live a normal life and possibly start a new relationship, but man did she ignore ALL the red flags. It was almost like the writers didn't know what to do with her and it shows as she made some seriously dumb decisions as if she hadn't seen evil before in a person's eyes. Will Patton returns as Deputy Frank Hawkins and I liked that he was more happy and jovial. The chemistry between him and Laurie was electric and cute as the grocery store scene between them was one of my favorite scenes. Rohan Campbell did an amazing job as Corey Cunningham. He was a good kid turned bad by the constant reminder of the accident that opens the film and how nobody showed him compassion. He was a great younger parallel to Laurie as a what if scenario of a babysitter that became evil. His dark decent was a fun one to watch and Rohan delivered the emotional turmoil in spades. Nick Castle returns as The Shape/Michael Myers and I loved that we see his mortality. He is still the brutal boogeyman of the night, but the film quickly reminds you that he is flesh and blood and I loved that he was not at 100%. The bond between him and Laurie was much stronger this time around and their 40 year battle comes to a blood and satisfying end.
Tumblr media
The score by the master composer John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davis has always been the highlight of this current trilogy and it is once again in this blood soaked finale. "Evil Eyes" is one of my favorite tracks in the film along with that iconic them that will always be a jam. Halloween Kills featured a less than stellar story, but this film makes up for it as it focuses on what made the first installment great. Aside from the really dumb love story for Allyson, this was actually a fun finale for the iconic slasher series. I found myself smiling from ear to ear as the last 45 minutes of the film began to climb to the last and brutal fight between Laurie and Michael and it didn't disappoint. I always thought Halloween: H20 was the perfect ending to the franchise, but this one offers up an even more undeniably definitive end to an amazing saga. I truly enjoyed this film and I wouldn't mind adding this new trilogy to the rotation of horror films I watch every year. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!
