This roe deer/rådjur is very pregnant, and if you look at her belly, you can clearly see her babies kicking! She is most likely expecting two fawns, one male and one female. Värmland, Sweden (April 27, 2024).

Painting I was commissioned to do for an upcoming book about my local nature reserve here in North Yorkshire, UK.
All the digital paintings i made for the book are of real places. It was so lovely to be asked to illustrate my home and fun trying to capture the seasonal light and mood of somewhere I know so well!
Here is a lesser spotted woodpecker visiting the area in winter. Pictured with barn owl, roe deer and gulls coming into roost on the floodwater.

A new viewpoint on antlers reveals the evolutionary history of deer (Cervidae, Mammalia)
fullview recommended!
something i've wanted to do for a while now. i've scoured the internet for something like this and can't find anything that compares all the different types of antlers together. except one recent study on their evolution, which is also very interesting on its own! i simplified it to provide a visual reference, while still trying to be scientifically accurate. some things differ between this and trophy scoring terminology like where the beam is and whatnot, so if something looks weird that's why.
small additional note, this study and others provide a lot of evidence that eld's deer should be in their own genus as it doesn't appear similar enough to barasingha and schomburgk's deer. however this doesn't seem to be adapted anywhere yet, so they're still in Rucervus for this guide.

A savvy great tit/talgoxe seizes a golden opportunity during a sleepy moment for the pregnant roe deer/rådjur. Little did the roe deer know, a feathered architect was on a mission for luxurious insulation material for its nest - cue this unexpected rendezvous. Värmland, Sweden (April 27, 2024).

Roe deer! During the mating season bucks will chase does they are interested in - apparently they often end up running circles or figure eights for so long that the ground gets trampled and a clear disturbed area of earth is exposed, forming a “roe ring”.
