Javan rusa (Rusa timorensis)
Another tropical deer species, the Javan rusa is found on a few islands in Indonesia and East Timor. It has also been introduced to many other southern islands, including Borneo, New Guinea, and Australia, but is unfortunately declining within its original range. It is one of the main prey items for the Komodo dragon!

Deercember Day Twelve: Sambar Deer | Brambles and Berries
The sambar (Rusa unicolor) is a large deer native to the Indian subcontinent, South China, and Southeast Asia that is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List since 2008. Populations have declined substantially due to severe hunting, local insurgency, and industrial exploitation of habitat. Analysis shows that the closest living relative of the sambar is most likely the Javan rusa of Indonesia; this is supported by reports that sambar can still interbreed to produce fertile hybrids with this species. Sambar use their height to their advantage in regards to their diet, as unlike smaller deer such as chital who share their range, sambar are browsers who often take advantage of fruiting seasons to eat the fruit which smaller species cannot access. Adult males and pregnant or lactating females possess an unusual hairless, blood-red spot located about halfway down the underside of their throats, referred to as a "sore spot". This sometimes oozes a white liquid, and is apparently glandular in nature, typically being active during the rut. More information here.

Komodo Dragon, Indonesia by Stephanie Hawk Via Flickr: My trip to Komodo Island, Indonesia. The Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis), also known as the Komodo Monitor, is a member of the monitor lizard family Varanidae that is endemic to the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang. The Komodo Dragon is the largest living lizard in the world. These wild dragons typically weigh about 154 pounds (70 kilograms), but the largest verified specimen reached a length of 10.3 feet (3.13 meters) and weighed 366 pounds (166 kilograms). As a result of their size, Komodo Dragons are apex predators, and dominate the ecosystems in which they live. Komodo dragons hunt and ambush prey including invertebrates, birds, and mammals. It has been claimed that they have a venomous bite; there are two glands in the lower jaw that secrete several toxic proteins. The biological significance of these proteins is disputed, but the glands have been shown to secrete an anticoagulant. Komodo Dragons' group behavior in hunting is exceptional in the reptile world. The diet of Komodo Dragons mainly consists of Javan rusa (Rusa timorensis), though they also eat considerable amounts of carrion. Komodo Dragons also occasionally attack humans.

Finished all the art for Raykin, woo! Now moving onto Kazin and back to the animals, here we have some deer! Based loosely off the Javan rusa deer, which is native to Indonesia and has made a name for itself as a pest in the Australian Top End, which has me a little reticent about putting it in Kazin, but they need something for milk. Camels would be most unhappy, and makakis are marsupials so milking them through the pouch isn't going to work out. So, after a brief look at South East Asian animals I could import to milk, deer it is. I know there are plenty of cows and buffalo but I want to avoid the obvious.
I gave them a bit of kangaroo-inspired face markings to at least make them feel like they fit a bit better, but really they're just straight-up deer. The overwhelming majority of deer in Kazin are farmed, though there are still pockets of wild ones up in the tropics. Those in the mountains are bred to be a bit fluffier, but they still have very coarse, unusable hair. They're primarily used for their milk, then the males will be used for venison and their pelts for leather and floor mats.
Also, side note on the makakis: makaki milk does exist. It's extremely expensive and only used in creamy cocktails by the uber rich. This is because, in order to milk the makaki, they have to... remove... the pouch. YEP. Kazin is fun :)

Look at this handsome sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) with the funky hairdo. Maybe because it is "date night" 😉 In all seriousness, there are species of deer that decorate their antlers such as the Javan rusa deer/ Sundar sambar (Rusa timorensis) and Red deer (Cervus elaphus) to attract females. I don't think this is such a case and this is just the deer going through the thicket and getting some vegitation tangled in its antlers. . . . Wildlife Wednesday: Javan Rusa
Wildlife Wednesday: Javan Rusa
My first time saw a Javan Rusa or Javan Deer was at Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue Center in North Sulawesi (Indonesia). A beautifully stunning animal native to Indonesia and Timor Leste. The wildlife rescue center works together with local and national authority to rescue smuggled wildlife animals and returning them to the wild. However, some of the animals had been experiencing stressful smuggling…
