This week's #FanArtFriday featured Mewsette, with Jaune Tom and Robespierre, from Warner Bros./UPA's Gay Purr-ee and they're celebrating her voice artist, Judy Garland, on what would've been her 100th birthday, folks.

every time I talk about the movie Gay Purr-ee, everyone thinks I'm fucking insane but IT'S FUCKING JUDY GARLAND IN HER ONLY ANIMATION ROLE AS A FANCY WHITE CAT!!!! JEAN-TOM IS SUCH A ROMANTIC AND IS SUCH A SIMP FOR MEWSETTE, IT'S SO DARLING!!!! JEAN-TOM AND MEWSETTE WALKED SO THOMAS O'MALLEY AND DUCHESS COULD RUN!!!!!

PLEASE, THAT WHOLE SOUNDTRACK SLAPS SO HARD!!!! THE ANIMATION IN IT IS SO GOOD!!!!! I definitely wasn't obsessed with any movie with cats when I was a child, what makes you say that!!! Robespierre was the cutest little sidekick!!!!!!!!!!!!! Meowirce was just an absolutely delightful villain!!!!!!!!!

Juane Tom and Mewsette from the movie Gay Purr-ee. This movie has two things I love: Chuck Jones and Judy Garland. Imagine if Judy Garland has starred in more animated films before her death...that would've been cool. On a side note, the YouTube channel Royal Ocean Film Academy has a three-part series on the history of UPA (the studio that made Gay Purr-ee). I was gonna have Robespierre in this drawing too but it ended up just being Jaune Tom and Mewsette. I'm sorry Robespierre, you're still adorable though.

UPA'S BOX OFFICE FLOP "GAY PURR-EE"!!!

It's a 1962 animated movie about cats. Mewsette gets bored of her life in rural France and moves to Paris. Her boyfriend, Jaune-Tom, and his friend, Robespierre, chance after her and try to stop her from getting manipulated by the villain which... I think was a brothel owner?? Am I remembering that right??? I looked it up to double-check and, yeah, I'm right. So Jaune-Tom and Robespierre have to save her from... being sold to an rich American cat to be his "bride", holy shit...

That dark blue kitten on the right is one of the protagonists, his name is inexplicably "Robespierre". (I say inexplicably because most of the characters have a cat pun mixed into a common french name for their name, like Mewsette, Meowrice, or Reubens-Chatte but this little guy's just called Robespierre. Given UPA's liberal alliance, being born out of the animator's strike on Disney, and the founder's communist sympathies, I don't think naming a character Robespierre was a coincidence. Like, it's not relevant to the plot or character at all, it's just a random reference.)

He's a little shit but he's great. I love Gay Purr-ee, like all of UPA's stuff, it's really not given the credit it deserves. I mean Judy Garland was in it!

But it's weird to hear the cats address one as "Robespierre". That's not a common name. Example:

The only thing I knew going in to this was that it inspired the aristocats and Chuck Jones worked on it. So I was looking forward to this because of that but it's a pure mess. Mewsette hears about the wonders of Paris and leaves Jaune Tom behind to see these wonders for herself. Mewsette encounters a charismatic con-man known as Meowrice. Meowrice takes advantage of her naive nature to groom her into a mail ordered bride. Meanwhile Jaune Tom and his friend Robespierre must find Mewsette before it's too late.

So yeah, this movie is straight up about sex trafficking. I mean this could have worked but it feels like gay purr-ee is having an identity crisis, it can't decide if it wants an kid or adult audience. The protagonist keeps switching between Mewsette and Jaune Tom it would have been a lot better if they stuck to one perspective. (probably Mewsette since while it is uncomfortable it's at least a plot). Gay purr-ee is a musical obviously to stretch it out to a feature length. There's like 8 or so songs that don't add anything to the story and just makes the pacing stop in it's tracks. The backgrounds are beautifully done and the character designs are decent for what they are.

You can see little glimpses of Chuck Jones style in the facial expressions. Chuck Jones actually worked on this in secret since he had a contract with looney toons and it ended up with him getting fired from looney toons after they found out which is so upsetting.

I wouldn't watch this unless you're interested in how a kids film about sex trafficking would work. I'd just watch the aristocats and something else Chuck Jones worked on (feed the kitty, Tom and jerry space series and duck dodgers were my favourites as a kid but you can't really go wrong here).

I'm terrible at thinking of appearances, but personality wise you remind me of Robespierre (Gay Purr-ee), Sebastian (The Little Mermaid), The Cowardly Lion (The Wizard of Oz), Chansey (Pokemon), Calcifer (Howl's Moving Castle), Mike Wazowski (Monsters Inc), Luigi (Mario series)... basically those category of characters :p
