The Words The Words obliquely poses the question, what would have happened if someone had found the suitcase full of Papa Hem’s manuscripts that Hadley lost at the Gare de Lyon, and published the content as his own work? Unfortunately, the answer is: not much.… Read More Genius The genius of Genius is that, although it revolves around the publication of Thomas Wolfe’s novels Look Homeward,…

Triple Goddess & Robert Graves
Whoever originated the idea of the MMC [Maiden Mother & Crone] in the early 20th century, it cannot be disputed that the idea was popularised by Robert Graves through his writings, especially The White Goddess (1948).  Graves perpetuated this theme in his subsequent writings, interchanging mother and nymph, so e.g. in The Greek Myths (1957.1:12), he observed:
“The moon’s three phases of new, full, and old recalled the matriarch’s three phases of maiden, nymph (nubile woman), and crone.”
Hekate is today most often equated to the crone aspect of this archetypal triplicate image, but this idea of Hekate as a crone goddess is one which would have been completely alien to the people of ancient Greece and others who honoured here before the 20th century. The only possible explanation for the continued association today is that somehow the darker, scarier aspects of Hekate have been equated to wisdom in old age, which is, when you think about it quite ludicrous. Wisdom and knowledge do most certainly come with old age, but wisdom does not make you dark or scary – it should, in theory, make you more illuminating, interesting and exactly what it says, wise.

Jerzy Skolimowski’s 1978 film, “The Shout” starring Alan Bates, John Huey, Suzannah York, and Tim Curry. Wanderer named Crossley meets avant-guarde musician and his wife in village of Devon and we learn he possesses the power to kill with a “shout” he learned from an aboriginal tribe. Things get weird from there. Worth tracking down. #robertgraves #jerzyskolimowski #theshout1978 #timcurry #johnhurt #alanbates #susannahyork #folkhorror #britishhorror #picnicathangingrock #pagancinema #shamanism https://www.instagram.com/p/CDl1pA_nrwC/?igshid=msy1zutacqbw

‘Robert, when I drowse to-night, Skirting lawns of sleep to chase Shifting dreams in mazy light, Somewhere then I'll see your face Turning back to bid me follow Where I wag my arms and hollo, Over hedges hasting after Crooked smile and baffling laughter, Running tireless, floating, leaping, Down your web-hung woods and valleys, Where the glowworm stars are peeping, Till I find you, quiet as stone On a hill-top all alone, Staring outward, gravely pondering Jumbled leagues of hillock-wandering.’
A Letter Home [excerpt] - Siegfried Sassoon to Robert Graves

Jane has made it very obvious she hates this book. She has chewed and ripped the entire cover and a couple pages, and I don't blame her. While Graves had the best intentions, his book is full of fakelore and discredited archeological findings. Unfortunately, modern witchcraft is heavily based on his book, making an important book to read, if you are able to as it is difficult to get through. #hedgewitch #witch #pagan #wicca #wiccan #witchesofinstagram #pagansofinstagram #tradcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #witchy #thewhitegoddess #robertgraves #fakelore #fakecraft #witchbook #neopagan #paganism #neopaganism #modernwitchcraft #paganbook https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt_m_ujHnJS/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1vqnksircubzi

St James's church, Piccadilly, stands at the heart of London’s West End, and is one of four similar churches designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The foundation stone was laid on 3 April 1676 by the Earl of St Albans and the Bishop of London. The church was consecrated on 13 July 1684 by Henry Compton, Bishop of London. ⛪️ The cost of the body of the church was about £7000, a sum provided by the Earl of St Albans and the inhabitants of the future parish. The Great War poet Robert Graves was married there, and poet William Blake was baptised there in 1757. ⛪️ St James’s was severely damaged during the first phase of the London Blitz on 14 October 1940. ⛪️ An Act of Parliament allowed the Vestry of St James's Piccadilly to purchase land in 1788 close to the present-day Euston Station as an additional burial ground, which was in use from 1790 to 1853. In 1887 the majority of the monuments and tombstones were removed and it opened as a public garden, known as St James's Gardens. St James’s Gardens is now closed, and will be built over as part of the extension of Euston Station for HS2. ⛪️ Find more fascinating info about this historic church via Explore Churches and the SJP website. You’ll also find London history titles and books about Britain’s historic churches and cathedrals under the Local History menu on our website. • #History #London #Piccadilly #StJames #Latergram #LondonArchitecture #LocalHistory #ChurchesOfInstagram #WestEnd #SirChristopherWren #Wren #ChristopherWren #Architecture #HistoryOfLondon #LondonBuildings #HistoricLondon #RobertGraves #LondonBlitz #17thCentury (at Piccadilly, London) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJTTab_Ajz0/?igshid=6ww87fdjp4oz

Hekate’s Many Forms
Hekate is a Goddess who has for thousands of years been associated with magic, as such she is capable of manifesting in many forms.  Historically she is shown as single bodied, or with two, three or four bodies or heads, human and sometimes that of animals.  In theory, the ancient Gods are all old – they are ancient, but since they are immortal, age is not relevant in the same way as it is for humans.  Whilst it may be nice to think that deities will fit into our neat human models, in reality that simply does not work when you start digging even just slightly beneath the surface. Forcing a restrictive construct, on an ancient and multifaceted Goddess such as Hekate, is not helpful in my opinion.  It leads to confusion as the way in which this Goddess was viewed historically, and the roles she held in the various mystery cults, are not compatible with the attributes given to a Crone in the MMC construct.
