(since i sense you may be having an atticus finch moment rn) is go set a watchman "canon" to you? i always liked tkam but i never read gsaw (even though someone gave it to me when it came out) because i got a weird feeling about the circumstances of it being published among other things. never talked to anybody about it so figured i'd ask a certified tkam enjoyer
i am having Such an atticus finch moment that i have three fics in the works for him
ohhh boy so hear me out.
warning: i'm rereading tkam as we speak and its been a while since ive read gsaw
in my own personal head-interpretation of to kill a mockingbird, in which the irl reality of its publication is disregarded, gsaw is canon in the sense that it's the alternate universe of to kill a mockingbird, with the point of divergence being the tom robinson trial.
tom robinson is found guilty: atticus experiences Character Growth and becomes and remains the folk hero Defender of Rights and dilf we know today
tom robinson is not found guilty [or at least, not found guilty via the defense atticus uses in gsaw]: atticus basically remains on the natural course he was in the beginning of tkam to bigotry and Racism TM
tldr: gsaw, on its own, is not a good book, and nor is it fully canon, but it does serve as great contextualization to the person that atticus is in tkam and who atticus could have been.
at the beginning of the book and throughout the trial, atticus finch is clearly a very White Moderate in our Modern Terms, in the sense that he might disapprove of the racism exhibited by the citizens of maycomb, but he also is more than content to not do anything about it. his worldview is essentially: "man it sure sucks that my neighbors are prejudiced and more than willing to sentence an innocent man to death, and but i guess i'll tolerate it and spend time around them because they're good people at heart [to other white people]." you know how one of the most memorable lessons atticus teaches to scout is to have empathy for others? my argument is that atticus's practicing of that is what makes him to give too much leeway to the bigoted members of the community around him.
we see this with ike finch, maycomb's "sole surviving confederate veteran" and stonewall jackson fetishist. he makes his appearance early on in the book, prior to the robinson case even being introduced. according to scout, he comes by at least once a year to "rehash the war" with atticus. while i can assume this means that ike is representing the confederacy and atticus the union in this conversation, considering that in the immediate paragraph after, atticus states "this time we aren't fighting the yankees, we're fighting our friends. but remember this, no matter how bitter things get, they're still our friends and this is still our home." it implies that in this american civil war replay, either both of them are identifying with the confederacy, or ike is and atticus is more than okay to go along with it. and in addition, atticus's apparent determination to remain on good terms with the people of maycomb no matter how bitter it got adds questions to just what he would have considered bitter enough for the people of maycomb to no longer remain his friends. if the mob at the scene at the jailhouse actually managed to lynch tom robinson, which they were probably going to do, until scout saved the day, would that have been "bitter enough" for atticus to reconsider being friends with murderers?
actually the fact that he adds in 'and this is still our home' makes me think he was planning to leave maycomb entirely if that scenerio actually happened but i digress
and then you get to ms. dubose, who serves as another aspect to how atticus views the racism of his town. when ms. dubose dies, he calls her the most bravest person he'd ever known, for having the courage to die clean of her morphine addiction, and also a "great lady". which, i understand, in part, is because she Just Died and he's talking to Jem and Scout who are children, but the way that atticus talks about it makes you feel as though he's implying that her courage serves as either recompense or excuse for a. the racism and b. the whole thing where she essentially verbally harassed jem and scout whenever they came by for the horrid sin of walking where she could see them.
of course there's also maycomb trial in general. atticus obviously knows that he cant win-- the famous 'just because you're licked doesn't mean you can give up' quote-- because he understands the prejudice of the town. but i believe that behind the quote, atticus still had faith in the judicial process, just not in the people who were in charge of it in maycomb. its part of the reason for his appeal-- to get robinson to a higher court where the people there could be more open-minded.
so in essence, atticus at the turning point of his story [ the trial ], is someone who's
1. overly lenient and sympathetic view of his maycomb neighbors allows him to excuse much of the harmful rhetoric and actions they perpetrate
2. considers racism to be, while Bad, a certain type of bad that is ultimately forgivable/excusable. i think there's also evidence in tkam that he basically also thinks the same thing for other forms of bigotry but i'm not going to look for them.
3. has trust in the judicial system
so from there, we have the tom robinson trial.
i like to think that what acting as tom robinson's defense attorney did for atticus was that it forced him to actually reckon with the racism of maycomb as directed towards an actual human being rather than a Nebulous Construct. when tom robinson got declared guilty despite being innocent, it showed him the actual harmful effects of what the people of maycomb believed, on an actual human being, who was subsequently presumably murdered via 17 gunshot wounds. it showed the failures of a system that allowed for tom robinson to be murdered and sentenced for a crime he didn't commit in the first place.
in gsaw, without tom robinson being convicted, i don't think that lesson would have hit so hard. to gsaw!atticus, robinson being declared not guilty is proof that the racism of maycomb is ultimately Not That Harmful, proof that the system ultimately Works As It Should, and it allows him to sink deeper into interactions with more extreme racist individuals, and eventually become the verison of atticus we see in gsaw.
in addition, gsaw!atticus's defense for tom robinson that gets him acquitted is that the robinson's presumed rape of mayella was consensual, whereas tkam!atticus reveals that the rape didn't happen between robinson and mayella in the first place (although, you know.) which implies a contrast between gsaw!atticus and tkam!atticus where tkam!atticus was focused on exonerating robinson's public image in order to then acquit robinson, but gsaw!atticus was focused on acquitting robinson head on, even if it meant attacking mayella instead.
what this would mean is that gsaw!atticus might not even have had all that much of an interaction with tom robinson, and therefore wasn't able to do that whole tkam-trademark Understanding and Seeing Him As A Person, thereby Removing his past Blinders to Injustice TM TM TM.
and this leads to the changes in atticus from tkam and gsaw. they're still the same person, but with a different turning point.

“  Here.  We’ll  be  waiting  a  bit  ,  so  I  figured  you  might  like  something  to  eat.  “  Chrollo  remarked  ,  handing  one  of  the  pastries  he’d  gotten  from  the  nearby  cafe  to  Atticus.  Such  at  least  was  the  explanation  the  spider  head  offered  ;  whether  it  was  really  that  or  the  man’s  own  sweet  tooth  kicking  in  was  a  mystery  to  anyone  else.
Although  his  arrival  seemed  to  be  impeccable  as  he  sat  down  beside  Atticus  and  watched  an  older  woman  tell  Atticus  how  lovely  it  was  to  see  such  a  lovely  young  couple  out  on  this  old  street  and  her  did  you  know  this  used  to  be  a  big  couples  street  back  in  my  day  ?  You  should  come  visit  with  your  boyfriend  at  night  -
Chrollo  could  have  helped.  His  silver  tongue  had  certainly  gotten  him  in  and  out  of  far  worse  situations  than  this.  But  he  said  nothing  at  all ,  busy  eating  the  powdered  donut  with  chocolate  filling  he’d  gotten  himself.  Humans  truly  were  so  odd  and  yet  interesting  ,  he  mused  to  himself  as  he  watched  the  older  woman.  She  knew  nothing  of  them  ,  yet  so  willingly  shared  bits  of  herself  without  hesitation  or  concern.  The  illusion  of  safety  -  unaware  of  the  spider  web  that  laid  inches  from  her  should  she  potentially  capture  a  thief’s  attention.  But  Chrollo  cared  little  ;  merely  idly  listened  and  observed  with  a  polite  and  engaged  expression  that  betrayed  nothing  of  the  ruthless  and  cold  man  he  really  was.
“  Mm.  We’ll  keep  your  words  in  mind  ,  ma’am.  “  Chrollo  finally  speaks  up  with  a  pleasant  smile  ,  wiping  away  a  bit  of  chocolate  from  his  lip.  “  Thank  you  so  much  for  your  insider  advice.  Local  knowledge  certainly  beats  any  pamphlet  or  website.  “  He  simply  smiles  at  her  comment  of  such  polite  and  handsome  young  men  !  before  she  carried  on  her  way.  Chrollo  turned  towards  his  pastry  again  ,  unfazed  despite  the  situation  that’d  just  unfolded.  “  .   .  .   Hm.  The  hotel  manager  was  right.  That  cafe  is  very  good.  “  He  muses  thoughtfully  ,  glancing  towards  Atticus.  “  What  do  you  think  ?  “

Can I please request a fic where Cassian falls for a teacher at Nyx’s school?
Tumblr media
Hot for Teacher
Tumblr media
Summary - For Cassian, meeting his son's teacher was love at first sight.
Warnings - single parenting, kids
A/n - my mom is a teacher and was all too excited for a cute drabble about a teacher reader with a Cassian, her favorite batboy.
Cassian sighed heavily as his son and Nyx ripped him through the streets of Velaris. They were speaking so quickly to each other about their new teacher. About what she'd have planned for today, about if she'd have snacks and treats.
It had been 7 long years since Nesta left him and Atticus to run off with Eris. He should have seen it coming and been more prepared, but the ache still lingered and stung. His mate, gone to Autumn, for a position of power, just like he knew she wanted. Like she had lied to him about wanting.
He smiled apologetically as the boys swayed him through the crowd, eyes locked on where Azriel stood with his daughter, kissing her forehead gently in goodbye. "Uncle Az!" Nyx yelled, running to him quickly. "Don't you feel like Miss Y/n would be a good girl friend for Uncle Cass?"
Azriel was slightly taken back by the question, and by the way his daughter's eyes instantly lit up and she began to nod eagerly. "I think that's up to Cassian, bud."
Liliana shook her head. "Nope. Up to us." She grabbed Cassian's pinky in her tiny hand, running towards the door as her bright red curls bounced and danced in the sunlight.
At the tops of the steps, Cassian locked his eyes on am incredibly gorgeous female. Her curled hair was to her shoulders in waves. She was wearing a tight black shirt with leggings and a black blouse. A bug smile graced her face as she greeted each child with their own secret handshake.
"Lili!" Even her voice was melodic, making cassian almost fall down the steps. "Who's your friend?"
Cassian felt Lili nudge him. "I'm Cassian," he held his hand to her.
"Ah! Atticus' dad," her eyes were sparkling as the little illyrian appeared behind him. "I was wondering if I'd ever meet you!" She took his hand, gently shaking it before going to greet Lili and Atticus. "He's a dream." Azriel watched you two interact, playing the moment openly for Rhys as Nyx ran to you, getting his own greeting.
That's how it started.
Cassian began dropping the kids off alone almost every day, ensuring he could spend sometime with you. That time turned into dinners alone. Nights spent in his bed when Atticus would be in Autumn for a weekend with Nesta.
Soon, those dinners turned into you meeting him and Atticus in public, slowly adapting the young illyrian to the big change.
You were currently on an ice cream date with them, using a napkin to wipe Atticus' chunky cheek. "Thank you, Mommy." You and Cassian froze, causing the little guy to look up. "What? Don't act like you don't want to be my mommy. I know I'm your favorite."
You couldn't help but to smile at him, kissing his nose in silent confirmation. "I'm just daddy's girl friend, bud. Not mommy."
"Not mommy yet."
Cassian was still quiet, hand tight on his ice cream sundae. The ring box in his pocket was heavy as he shot Atticus a little look of warning.
But he couldn't shame him, couldn't lie to him.
You weren't his mommy.
Not yet at least.

Snippet Canis Major
Voldemort remembers the other Sirius. Also, a little glimpse at Orion/Walburga, because I never tire of this toxic couple.
(-)
Usually, it was Arcturus or Pollux that showed up when their children got in trouble. Cygnus, especially, was often in trouble, so Pollux’ face was the most familiar to the students.
In Voldemort’s sixth year at Hogwarts, Atticus Bulstrode, the Head Boy, invited Walburga to Hogsmeade, the last in a lengthy string of boys asking her out. Only this time, she accepted.
When he heard, Orion challenged him to a formal duel. Atticus laughed, rolled his eyes at his fourteen years old opponent.
“Quick!” He was shaken awake by Abraxas, in the middle of the night.“Orion is killing Bulstrode in the trophy room! You have to stop him!”
He reached them just in time, he disarmed Orion, and rushed Bulstrode to the Hospital Wing, where they found Dumbledore asking the Matron for a sleeping potion.
Atticus was lucky- Dumbledore was more often than not away from Hogwarts, chasing Grindelwald, rumour went, but he was there that night, apparently suffering with insomnia.
The professor kept Atticus alive until the Healers from St Mungo arrived and took the boy with them.
“It wasn’t me,” he said, hurriedly, stained in Bulstrode’s blood, lingering in the Hospital Wing. Dumbledore peered at him from under his half-moon glasses. Dumbledore always liked to blame everything on him. “I only brought him here after-”
“I know,” Dumbledore assured him.
The next morning Atticus’ father came thundering, his yells easily heard from where Voldemort was spying, near the Headmaster office.
He wondered if maybe this will be the time when a Black actually suffers consequences. After all, Bulstrode’s name was ancient, they were a rich, influential family, and surely, at least on account of that, Dippet would do something more than detention and points taken, which was the usual punishment for Blacks.
Only, this time it wasn't Arcturus that came to fix his son's issues.
It was the infamous Sirius Black. A tall man, with wide shoulders, long black hair hanging around his face, deep circle under his too intense eyes, mouth twisted in a snarl. Orion walked behind him, his gaze fixed on his older relative. Voldemort watched them, hidden by a pillar. Orion never seemed small; he carried himself with such arrogance and pride, his head held so high he seemed a foot taller than he was. Yet right then, Orion looked small, trailing after his grandfather, quietly, as Voldemort observed them disappear up the stairwell leading to the Headmaster's chambers.
They left Dippet’s office not even a quarter of an hour after they entered it.
As soon as they emerged from it, the gargoyles closing the door behind them, old Black slapped Orion, the noise echoing down the hallway.
“Next time you pull something like this, do it on a weekday, you fool! If I’m woken up again at this ungodly hour on your account on a Sunday, you will be very sorry for it.”
“Yes, Grandfather,” Orion answers, in that unfazed tone of his.
The old man narrows his eyes. “What was it about, anyway? How did he provoke your ire?”
A second worth of silence. “He tried stealing from me.”
Orion gets hit again, harder this time. The heavy family ring rips the skin at the corner of his left eye, and that pure blood of theirs makes an appearance.
“Then why does he still have hands?” the old man hisses, enraged. “If someone attempts to take what is yours, you cut off their hands, boy!”
He slaps Orion again, just as harshly.
“Yes, Grandfather.” Orion doesn't take his eyes off his grandfather, doesn't wipe away the blood running down his cheek, his hands held behind his back.
Sirius Blacks huffs in displeasure, before turning on his heels and marching down the hallway. “Weakling,” he mutters.
Nothing happened to Orion. Not even the usual detention. No points taken.
Sirius Black insisted it was a formal duel, that the challenge had been accepted, and it was all done honourably, Slughorn told Voldemort, when he called him into his office to give him the Head Boy badge, temporarily, until Atticus recovered and would be able to return to Hogwarts and his duties.
“When Armando reminded him duels are illegal at Hogwarts, formal or not, Mr Black said rules are just words on parchment; that he’s a wizard, and he follows laws of magic, not of men.” Slughorn sighs, rubs at his temples, and then he takes a caramel out of his newest bribe-sweets bag that Abraxas gave him. “He told Mr Bulstrode that if he wants justice, then he should challenge him to a duel, and solve it like wizards ought to. Of course, Mr Bulstrode has more than one brain cell, so he refused and let it go.” He sighs again, points a sugar coated finger at Tom. “This is why I always told you not to seek trouble with Blacks. We’re lucky he’s apparently taken to drinking lately, locked up in his Manor, that he lets Arcturus handle most of their affairs, who is much milder and reasonable. But, once in a while, he gets out and you do not wish to run afoul of him.”
No one in the common room talked of it; only Walburga complained she was looking forward to going to the newly opened teashop in Hogsmeade, and demanded to know what was Orion’s problem with Atticus.
“A Quidditch thing,” Orion told her, with a shrug. “Don’t worry, Waly. I’ll take you to Madam Puddifoot’s.”
“I don’t want to go with my baby cousin, don’t be ridiculous! Malfoy, you will take me!”
Abraxas backs away, slowly. “I can’t, Walburga. I’m busy, I have to study,” he says, hastily, when Orion glares at him from behind Walburga.
It was the only time mild-tempered, well behaved Orion did something so outrageous that his unhinged grandfather had to come and solve it, so it was the only time Voldemort saw the man.

Lovin ur oc Atticus so much! He sounds so cute, but how would he react to a darling that more or less doesn’t give any f’s?? Polite as hell but doesn’t care abt things most of the time.
Maybe because of his habit of stealing clothes one of readers’ friends decide to let them borrow a tight tank top that says “slut” on the front?? Reader really doesnt care but I feel like Atticus might a little too much. 😅 if you don’t like these kinds of asks pls feel free to delete! No pressure
I think it’s a super cute idea!! I love it ( *`ω´)
——-
-this is a socially isolated man who doesn’t get out much and doesn’t understand what the shirt means
-he thinks it’s a cute shirt on you. He likes how it doesn’t hide anything from his eyes. Often checks you out when you’re making dinner or doing laundry.
-finally clicks for him when he’s watching a tv show that brings up the word
-asks you about it in a weird roundabout way. You explain that it’s just a shirt and you don’t really care about it.
-he does Bc he feels like it disrespects you and doesn’t want you to feel bad (sees it as a negative connotation due to how the tv show and town portrays slut shaming)
-Waits until you’re in the shower or in a different outfit to enact his plan.
-Steals some dog treats from the kitchen. Hides the dog treat in the shirt. Calls for Otto and Earl to come upstairs.
-The dogs are elated to find a treat for them. They’ve been working so hard! They dig into it not caring about the garment.
-You find the shirt ripped in pieces underneath two happy dogs who just got a free snack.
-Atticus comes in and lectures them for ruining your clothes
-It’s ok though! You can wear his flannels. He’ll makes sure to wash it for you :)
-Does give your friend a lighter workload the next day so they don’t get upset at you for ruining the shirt too much.
-The poor dogs who got scolded after being tricked:
