Winter In Turkey: Ephesus
Winter in Turkey impressions #14: Ephesus surprised me not only with its sheer size and the huge roman theatre, but also with some incredibly well kept mosaics and wall paintings in some excavated houses. Lucky i arrived early, because i spent way much more time than estimated before. It was so amting to roam trough these contemporary witnesses from so many eras and history.

Taiwan: Street Procession
There are still ongoing events for the Chinese New Year. So i bumped into a street procession and followed it for awhile. Gods and Goddesses were carried in ornate sedan chairs or pulled in decorative carriages. The people were in festive mood, played drums and instruments and cheered up the spectator and i think the gods and goddesses too.

Iceland: Arriving In Reykjavik
The worst was not the temperature of -6°C, but the strong wind. Within minutes out on the car park, searching for my rental car, my fingers got numb. It took me several minutes more to defrost them again and finally got my gloves out of my luggage. Lesson learned, always keep your gloves ready. Strolling around Reykjavik, enjoying the clear morning air, the long dawn in the morning and of course…

Winter In Turkey: Karahan Tepe
Winter in Turkey Impressions #7: The way to Karahan Tepe brought me to a lovely campsite at the mediterranean sea near Iskenderun, before i continue my trip along the Syrian border to Sanliurfa, near the archeological site. This was merely a week before the huge, disastrous earthquake. Karahan Tepe is one of the oldest settlement of human history. It is around 10000-12000 years old. Humans…

Finland - Lapland - Rovaniemi
Long way up north. The weather wasn’t really welcoming, but this way I just cruised across Finland from south up to Rovaniemi. The Arktikum in Rovaniemi is a museum which explains life and culture on the arctic circle in a interesting and wonderful way. One shouldn’t miss it when up here. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Santa Claus Village just bit north of the town. It’s a tourist trap,…

Palestine - Jericho, the oldest city ever?
Actually, there’s not really much to see on the excavation site of Jericho. At least it’s not as impressive than other sites in the area. But it claims to be “the oldest city of the world”, as our guide it stated proudly too. However, the findings and some walls are dated back around 10’000years BCE. This would be as old as the newer founds in Anatolia, like Göbekli Tepe or Karahan Tepe, both i…

Tel Aviv - Carmel Market
It’s a must, they said. My first impression was, it’s just another market like so many other ones. But when you look bit closer, you find many local specialities, worth to try or consider to take as a souvenir. Just a few photo impressions:

The Wall - Art between Israel and Palestine
“There’s a sniper observing the area” the Palestinian guide was pointing to the watchtower at the wall corner. From there, a huge wall expands on both directions. This wall, also known as West Bank Barrier , was build by Israel for security reasons, as they claim. For the Palestinians it’s rather an act of segregation and further restriction of their freedom. On the Palestinian side, it became…

Israel - Jerusalem Yad Vashem (Holocaust Museum)
To understand Israel, one have to understand the history of its people. The traumatic peak of the Jewish diaspora was the so-called holocaust in the 1930’s in Europe. The official website of Yad Vashem explains: “The Holocaust was unprecedented genocide, total and systematic, perpetrated by Nazi Germany and its collaborators, with the aim of annihilating the Jewish people. The primary…

Israel - Sea Of Galilee
Very calm and quite lies the Sea of Galilee in front of me. To my surprise i was almost alone on the shore and enjoyed the calm atmosphere here. The village Capernaum was already mentioned in the bible and supposed to be a place where Jesus lived and thaught his disciples. Here you could imagine, how he went out with them in a fisher boat, and eventually even walked on water. It was enough for…

Haifa, Israel - The Hanging Gardens Of Baha'i
My plan was a nice picnic and some rest in the famous gardens of Baha’i. The Hanging Gardens of Baha’i are on the slopes of Carmel mountains and overlooking Haifa and its bay. They surrounds the Shrine of Bab, where the founder of the Baha’i Faith is buried. Unfortunately, only a small part of the gardens are open for the public. The shrine itself was not to enter. However, i could had a…

Seoul: The Deoksugung Palace
Midst in the city of Seoul is the Deoksugung Palace. I was lucky to be there early morning with almost no other tourists. Under the cold blue sky lies this gem with its beautifully restored buildings surrounded from the big city. This palace was in use until the begin of 20th century and some building shows a mix of western and traditional architectures. Also were some rooms fitted with…
