Animal of the Day!
Red Flat Bark Beetle (Cucujus clavipes)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Unlisted
Habitat- Northern North America
Size (Weight/Length)- 10 mm
Diet- Insects; Larvae
Cool Facts- People generally have a stigma against bark beetles because they’re known to kill trees through blue stain fungus. May I introduce the red flat bark beetle, a beetle that eats the larvae of other bark beetles and protects their home tree. They make a small initial hole to crawl underneath the tree’s bark where they then hunt anything that fits in their mouth. Due to living in polar areas, red flat bark beetles have learned how to survive freezing temperatures to the extreme. They lose up to 40% of the water in their cells to prevent themselves from freezing solid. Instead, they are able to continue eating the other hibernating insects in their tree as snow continues to fall.
Rating- 12/10 (Flat as a pancake.)

Septembug day 1: Vibrant! I saw this beetle near Spokane, Washington in June. It was irridescent in a way my phone camera wasn't able to pick up, but this is the best photo I got.
I haven't drawn in a while! This was really fun!

The flat bark beetle may seem like an ordinary insect, but it holds a special place in the enchanted forest. Its flat body allows it to hide and blend in with the trees, making it a master of disguise. In the moonlight, its shell shimmers with a silver glow, revealing its true magical nature. Legend has it that the flat bark beetle carries ancient knowledge from the depths of the forest, and those who are lucky enough to encounter one may receive mystical insights and secrets of the earth. Be sure to listen closely when you hear the flat bark beetle's whispering wings - they just might be revealing secrets to you!

Updated: 2023/12
I originally posted this on my old blog. Since posting that, I've found other foods, drinks and ingredients. As of now this list is updated with everything found in media released as of Oct 2023.
Like the original, this is still a very long post that contains all canonical desserts, dishes, drinks, ingredients, and sauces. Unlike the original, I could not list canonically suggested food and ingredients, nor every codex, item, letter, ect in the sources. Because it was too long. I did add them to the individual post.
Like in the individual posts, the list has the country of origins next to each item and any relevant information. Such as ingredients, use, notes, or trivia. For the canonically suggested foods and drinks I list what their real world uses are for your reference as to what they might be used for in Thedas.

Box Turtles (Eastern)
Tank:
Either indoor or out a water bowl with shallow water should be present at all times and changed daily or whenever dirty
They should never be fully submerged in water, but they should also have a water bowl and some humidity in their enclosure. Mist tanks at least once daily for adults, but multiple times daily for hatchlings since they dehydrate easily.
If keep mostly indoors take them outside as often as possible to help them absorb sunlight and strength their muscles
If kept outside made sure the walls are high enough, so the turtle cannot escape
Whether in or out made sure a hiding place is present for them whether that be substrate they can bury themselves in, a log, plants, a small pot/vase etc.
The measurements should be a minimum of 20 x 10 x 12 inches or a 10 gallon tank, but larger can be better if you have the room.
The substrate can be any type of mulch or dirt or coconut fiber or fir bark, but coconut fiber is preferred along with loose leaves on top or moss.
If indoors they need a heat lamp and an UV lamp to replicate the sun, but getting taken outside is recommended
You can have a small ball in their cage or other turtle safe toys as they may play with them sometimes
DO NOT house more than one male box turtle in the same tank since they can get territorial and fight each other. One male and many females or just many females in one tank can work however since females get along and aren’t territorial.
Diet/Feeding Habits:
They are omnivores and need a variety of things for their diet. Hatchlings need lots of protein and calcium when young, but need a variety of hard and soft foods as well for their beaks to grow correctly
Proteins: mealworms, earthworms, crickets, grasshoppers, raw beef (not too much fat however), beetles, slugs, cooked chicken, pillbugs, eggs, etc.
Calcium sources: crickets, fish, shrimp, kale, spring greens, etc.
Acceptable vegetables that should represent a high percentage of the box turtle’s diet include collard greens, beet greens, mustard greens, broccoli, turnip greens, alfalfa hay, bok choy, kale, parsley, Swiss chard, watercress, clover, red or green cabbage, savory, cilantro, kohlrabi, bell peppers, green beans, escarole, pumpkin and dandelion.
A lesser percentage of the diet can include cactus, various squash, sprouts, cooked sweet potato, parsnips, okra, cucumber, asparagus, mushrooms, carrots, peas, and corn.
Fruits to offer include apples, pears, bananas (with skin), mango, grapes, star fruit, raisins, peaches, tomato, guava, kiwis, and melons. Fruits that are particularly healthy include figs (which are high in calcium), apricots, dates, raspberries, and strawberries.
Age identification:
Count the rings on their shells to tell their age
They reach maturity around 5 years old
Gender Identification:
Look on the plastron (bottom side of the shell/their tummy) and see if it is concave(Slightly inwards) or flat. Flat is female, concave/inwards is male
Males have red eyes while females have brown or gold
 Physical traits:
Full size around 5 years old, male and females both around the same size
They have gold and black coloration when healthy, but males have brighter colors than females and the shells can dull if not receiving enough sun
The males claws grow a lot faster than the females and tend to curl into the feet if not sanded down. In the wild their nails get sanded down by rocks, but in captivity you have to do this by hand and with a stone
Their necks are long when fully stretched out and they will stick out their necks when curious or when about to eat
They have scales where their legs are, but everywhere else is skin
They can grow up to 8-9 inches or a bit bigger than an adult’s hand
Personality:
When stressed or unhappy they will absolutely refuse to eat and can die from too much stress
Once they are calm and settled in they are fairly docile and curious
They like to explore and crawl around their environment, especially during the day
Some are okay with being held if they are tamed from a young age and/or are used to the person holding them. Some do not like to be held and will struggle to get away
Most of harmless and will never bite with their main defense mechanism to hide in their shell and close it up
Good escape artists if you do not keep an eye on them or don’t have a secure cage, they are great diggers and climbers
The younger they are the more frightened, but being gentle and patient helps get them calmed down and more used to their environment. They typically spend the first year or two of its life just eating and hiding
They also hibernate during the winter/like to bury themselves for most of the day, but in captivity they never go into full hibernation
They do not like to be handled frequently as it causes them stress, but they still can be handled and it can help them calm down over time
Their mating season is March-very early May and a male turtle may not eat during mating season if a female is near
Diseases/health concerns to look out for:
Hatchlings are very vulnerable to eye infections/upper respiratory infections and it’s marked by milky gunk around the eyes. This can be removed with a q-tip/cotton swab dipped in purified water.
Hatchlings are susceptible to parasites especially outside, so if do fecal exams if necessary
If their skin peels it means they are not getting enough hydration. This is easily fixed by fixing their humidity levels or placing them in shallow water more often to soak or drink more
They need sunlight or an UV light for their shells otherwise they lose color and vitamins they need to survive. If the shells lose colors that is a massive concern and can lead to shell rot (Deformed shell and bad odor)
They need lots of calcium/protein when young to help their shell form correctly and not have dents.
Overgrown beaks happen when young, but can be sanded down and can be prevented by feeding hatchlings a mix of hard and soft foods when young
Muscle weakness, but they can be built up when daily exercise like walking and climbing around a yard
Mating season can put extra stress on them and make them more susceptible to disease, so be careful of that
Special hatchling/egg care:
Once they hatch you need to immediately release them back into the wild otherwise it alters their instincts
They are carnivorous when young and need lots of proteins, but you can feed them fruits/vegetables and they might start eating them between 6-12 months old. Hand Feeding is also suggested to help them get used to you
Calcium+D3 should be supplemented in very small amounts once or twice a week. You can do this by dusting the live protein with it, mixing it in the mash, or dusting it on top of food.
They can get intimidated by larger food, so cutting up to about pea-sized pieces is suggested and feed them a variety of foods
Females will lay eggs whether or not she has mated, so you might find eggs but no hatchlings. She will typically lay 4-5 eggs, but possibly up to 11 and signs of infertile ones can be in water, above ground, or really shallow holes
Females tend to look for nesting sites around June or July and will bury them underground, usually next to a plant or rock with the spot being both sunny and humid
The nesting sites will take the female sometimes 8 hours to build and they will dig them with their hind legs and won’t face the hole
If you are incubating the eggs indoors, then just place them into the container under some substrate and DO NOT move them and make sure to mist the take every 2-3 days. Also give them a few days so they can develop harder shells before moving them
The eggs will hatch about 65-90 days later and like stated earlier, you have to release them instantly.
Make sure when incubating that the humidity stays as 80% and a substrate of moss or sand. This is the recommend incubators for eggs: https://amzn.to/34xQvPD
If using your own tank for incubation mist daily and keep a cup of water in there as well, always keeping the temperature around and never over 84 degrees Fahrenheit. Around 72 degrees will get all males and around 84-88 will be all females
Hatchlings can be kept in a 10 gallon tank with an incredibly shallow water bowl, a hiding place, and a heating lamp. Also should be misted lots.
The tank should be cleaned every few months, but most substrate can be reusable since most turtles use water as a potty
Plants should be offered at every meal, but they may not eat it every time and don’t stop offering either

Did a collection of defining moments for my Tolkien OCs a while ago and finally decided to post it. Got eight or nine different characters here depending on how you count.
When Agzil gasped, it brought nothing but a cold ash into his lungs. His limbs trembled. Even on all fours, they nearly didn’t have the strength to support him. An elbow buckled and he fell to a forearm instead, forehead hitting the dusty ground, flooding his eyes, nose, and mouth, with the same thick, grey soot that covered everything here. “You talk back again, maggot, and the Lieutenant won’t be so friendly!” The orc captain had a strong Lugburz accent. She was from here- the land of endless burning and choking and death. Made Agzil’s head spin. He obviously had done something wrong in his non-reaction, though, because the whip cracked across his back again with a blinding white-hot agony that dropped him flat to the earth. “Enough!” he heard Mirci crying, so distant he almost didn’t comprehend the words. “You’ve taught him your lesson, now leave him!” “You keep out of this, tinkerer!” Agzil breathed a lungful of soot so foul it made his lungs spasm. He coughed into the ground, and slowly raised himself to his forearms again. He could go no further. “You keep sticking out your neck for Gundabad trash, one day it’s going to get sliced!” the captain roared in the background. “Master may like your big metal beasts, but they done us no good! Done disrupted our ranks, made us look like fools- don’t you know we’re at war?!” When a voice spoke out from behind them all, somehow Agzil instantly knew it was not the voice of an orc. The Dark Master had Men in his armies, too, but as far as Agzil knew, Men didn’t speak the Black Tongue, and this newcomer used it with a natural and melodic lilt. Agzil wished he knew Black Speech. The captain barked something back in the same tongue, then Mirci spoke up in Common. “It wasn’t his fault, sir. It was my machine what went wild. Drive gears broke and the whole thing-“ She stopped abruptly. Agzil imagined this newcomer raising a hand in the way he’d never known a real general to do, and the fear that shot through him was icy and cold at the idea that this might be the Lieutenant of the Tower himself. Something sharp and cold tucked beneath his chin. Agzil felt a trickle of blood down his throat, and he worked to raise his head with the only strength he had left. His eyes met the empty, blank pits in a mask of iron, regarding him expressionless and still. He’d never seen Garavdúr before, but he knew what the War Wolf was meant to look like, and so of course he knew what he was faced with now. His entire body trembled, waiting, staring. Garavdúr did not speak for a long moment. Finally he lifted his sword away from Agzil’s throat and let his head fall, muttering softly as he did. “Pathetic creatures...” The heavy metal footfalls moved away. Agzil laid in the dust for a while before he raised his face again. Mirci’s head was there, coated now in black blood and ash, a few feet from where her body lay crumpled and lifeless. Agzil put his forehead in the dust again. The captain gave him another taste of lashing when he did not try to get up.
Thet wished her mother would loosen up on her hand so she could get closer to the extremely hot molten metal, but unfortunately, it seemed her parents were somewhat responsible. They were traders and always had been, and Thet had seen so many different types of places- dwarf-keeps and hobbit villages and little towns of Men- but never before had she seen metal being worked. It was stunning. “What is it going to be?” she asked eagerly, reaching out a hand as if she could touch the white-hot goop. The smith paused and flipped back the heavy iron mask to reveal fair golden hair and a beard done into neatly capped braids. Her face was smeared with soot. “Going to be a knife someday, little one,” she said in a kind and rumbling voice. “Maybe you’ll use it to cut up your dinner.” “Could you make it a necklace?” Thet asked instead, very eager. They had one necklace in the family; her father wore it at all times and she would recognize the dull reddish gold anywhere. There was a garnet set into the middle. She really liked the chain- how delicate and yet sturdy every individual link was. It was fascinating every time her father let her play with it. The smith looked at her and gave a friendly smile, then reached down with a pair of heavy clamps and broke one small section of the metal off. She twisted it into a crude spiral, bent a thin loop over the top, and then plunged it into her bucket of water. There was a hiss and a rush of steam went up from the boiling liquid. Quick as could be, the smith pulled the spiral out with another clamp and laid it on her table. She produced a length of thin leather from a pile nearby and slipped its end through the loop, and tied it off to create a loose circle. She held the trinket out in a gloved hand. “You be careful now. It’s hot.” Thet squirmed free of her mother’s grip and scurried forward on her crutch.  She wrapped her hand in a length of her cloak so she could accept the gift. It was tarnished and none too shiny; just a simple lump of steel crudely wrought into a pendant of sorts, but to Thet’s young eyes it was the most astonishing gift she had ever received. Something made just for her, only for her. Never had she had anything like it. She gripped it tight, pulled it close and looked up eagerly at the tall smith turning back to her work. “I’m going to be just like you someday!” The smith smiled and rustled a hand through the young dwarf’s hair. “You’ll need a good bit of beard before that, little one. Take good care of your necklace.” And Thet never let that shoddy piece of metalwork leave her side.
There was no silence after battle. Corien could only hear the groans of the dying. Flames crackling cruelly in the grass. Huff of beasts and screams carried far away from the walls of the burning city. Orcs that were not quite dead gurgled when he vaulted past. Men that weren’t quite dead begged and choked and sang in shaking, weepy voices. All of it was blurry. Smeared. Nothing real, no sound registering to his battle-worn ears. The only things he heard were the cries of bowstrings, and a clash of steel on steel and wood on stone and metal creaking and screaming and tearing apart. “Halbarad!” he screamed into the settling night. It was lost amidst the identical calls coming up from other places on the field. Other brothers and sisters found hewn, children lifeless, friend and lover ripped apart. Everyone was out to collect their dead. The ribbon tied to the haft of his spear fluttered lightly in the breeze that swept up from the river. It had been blue this morning. It was splattered now with black and scarlet, bruised and sickly beyond repair. He threw the spear aside when he at last saw the gleam of silver against a cloak of bloodstained grey. It took both hands to roll his brother face-up. The silver star Halbarad had always worn on his cloak was shiny and clean, but it was about the only thing left recognizable. Corien’s fingers trembled uncontrollably as he pushed the earth brown hair out of his brother’s face. Blood caught on his fingers and colored his palm scarlet, so he left red smears on the eyelids when he closed those familiar ice-grey eyes. “Halbarad,” he said. His voice sounded so steady it would have surprised him, had he actually believed it was he himself speaking. There was no way it could be. No way he could form the words. “Don’t.. Don’t be dead. You can’t be dead, I- I need you. Please don’t be-“ His eyes travelled slowly to the gashes that tore his brother from jaw to belly and the words broke on a sob. He thought he might have screamed, but so many others were doing the same thing that he couldn’t pick his own voice out from the roar.
Mosco sat listening to the bees. His back rested against the thick grey bark, and his legs were up on a bough, and around his head bees danced from flower to flower in an endless choreographed routine. They were right smart, bees. His ma always said so. They talked back and forth, spoke in their own special language of waltz. Ma used to say that the Greenhands were honey farmers because they had dancing in their blood, and that they and the bees were one and the same. He’d fallen asleep tucked into the branches of his peach tree. The sun was growing low, and at this rate he’d miss his own nineteenth birthday party, but the woods of the Southfarthing were beautiful at sunset in the summer, and he thought he might go for a walk. The grass felt good on his bare feet, if a little cool. His hair hadn’t grown in all proper yet, so sometimes his toes got chilly and he had to embarrass himself wearing socks, but he just chalked that up to his being a “late bloomer,” as Ma put it. He was just out of season. He’d ripen up someday. The birches that made up the part of the forest closest to the farm soon gave way to wrinkly old pines with boughs hanging heavy and dark over their beds of needles. Mosco hummed a walking song, not at all caring for a track to follow, but wandering aimlessly and contemplating his own infinite nineteen-year-old wisdom. The smell of rot stopped him just before he put his foot into it. Beneath the overhanging crypt of the pines, a deer lay dead. Its skin was drawn thin over bones that poked halfway through, and underneath he could see a red-yellow ooze that leaked out into the forest floor. This, he guessed, was what smelled so foul and attracted the bugs. Beetles crawled in and out of the dead animal’s empty eye sockets and nostrils. Worms pitted the parts of its muscle still intact. Mosco saw eggs peppering the ragged hide like white trees in a minuscule forest. His family didn’t eat much meat. They never slaughtered it themselves if they did. He couldn’t think of a time he’d seen a real dead thing. When he got home, he declined the offer of birthday cake and went right to bed, and dreamt of squirming things that burrowed down to lay their eggs in pits beneath his flesh.
Cypress knelt next to the crime scene and tried very hard not to cry. Stuff like this didn’t happen in the Shire. It wasn’t meant to happen. A whole crowd of people looked at her with big, terrified eyes, expecting her to lead them. To tell them what to do in this moment because she was the mayor and she was meant to know. Blood had never been spilled like this. Woodhall’s history was a peaceful one and nothing like this had ever happened before. She looked at the assembled group. It was hard to seem like she wasn’t completely out of her depth, because her voice squeaked rather loudly. “We... We should bury them, yes?” At once the hobbits broke into cries and murmurs that all laid over each other into a horrific cacophony. “They took half the year’s stock!” “How did they get past the borders?” “Why didn’t we know they were coming?” “Are we going to get my honey back?” The last voice was that of Mosco Greenhand, who looked as devastated as the rest, but with an air of determination in his eyes. Cypress raised her hands to quiet the townspeople. “Look, I know this is a lot to process and we can’t understand it yet. But the first thing we ought to do is give these three brave souls who gave their lives for the good of Woodhall a proper burial, yes?” A general murmur of agreement. Cypress looked down at the fair faces she had known, the throats and bellies split by goblin blades, and it made her feel desperately ill. This horror could not be left unpunished.
Sometimes, when Astorrel went to sleep, she had a nightmare. It was always the same one, and it always came on when she decided to rest like other creatures did and actually close her eyes for hours. So, naturally, she avoided doing so. Rested on her feet and never let her guard down while she did it. She never had liked sleeping anyway. Never had any reason to do so for the better part of an age. Lina changed things, though. Lina liked it when Astorrel was there to share her night and her dawn, sleeping and waking, both together as equals. And of course, Astorrel liked to be there when Lina wanted her, and she liked to be close to her beloved, so of course whenever she could she shared Lina’s bed. Made the nightmares come back though. In the deepest hours of the night, when Lina was still and the moonlight slanted in through the window to paint her brown skin silver, Astorrel would lie stiff with her eyes open and nonseeing, and she’d tremble. She knew that in the dream- at least, in parts of it- she was her father. She carried Mirlach, but the blade was younger and the gem hadn’t yet fallen from its hilt. The whole sword always seemed darkened and scarlet-stained to her, and sometimes it dripped. She would hold the fire of the Silmaril and scream and scream as the agony of it withered her flesh away and the stench of rotting burn rose hotly to meet her nostrils, and she would see everything that Maedhros had done to hold the heirloom of his house in his hand, and how in the end, the reward of the quest became its doom. She would feel the irrepressible heat of smoldering, burning rock, and taste the earth as it pressed in, swallowed, took her and her cursed Silmaril into its throat and entombed them there forever. And the dream let her lie, suspended there in agony, the unseen gem scorching her hand to withered bone and the rock pressing in on her, for the entirety of the rest of the world. When she woke up with her hunting knife in her hand, dangerously close to Lina’s back, she decided abruptly she would not be doing this again. She left the cottage that morning before dawn. The next occasion she saw her Lina was on the day she died.
“You’re doing it again,” Léothain said, pulling Wulfrun’s focus away from the herders leading in a group of freshly adult horses to settle in the city. “You don’t really think she’s going to be there, right?” Wulfrun flushed and went back to sharpening her sword. Behind her, Léo plucked the last piece of laundry from the line and waltzed over with his basket against his hip. He stood next to Wulfrun, who sat silent on the stone step and watched young horses and rough herders pass the house by. They didn’t come into the city much; spent most of their time in the downs and the fields tending to their herds. Wulfrun had heard they were capital horsemen, and they guided the herds well enough through the winding lane of Edoras, riding without saddle on their sturdy, gleaming mounts. The horses they were leading in were meant to be ridden in battle. She could tell from the way they moved; so confident with strength and quiet grace, heads set proudly. She’d have one someday. Her fa made enough as a carpenter, but wasn’t much for travel, and they only had one horse for the three of them. The fat little thing was functional enough, but far from the mighty steed Wulfrun dreamed of. “You’re going to be really lucky if you see her again,” said Léo in an irritating sort of singsong voice. Wulfrun scowled at him. The sharpening stone swept over her worn blade again. Again. When most of the herd had passed, she finally found what she’d been seeking. At the rear of the group, riding a tall, shimmering palomino, came the girl. She looked just a little older than Wulfrun’s proud fifteen. Her face gleamed sunshine golden, and the dark hair that should have been dyed probably yellow was grown out and black down to the ears. She wore sturdy, battered clothes like the rest of the herders, but her eyes shone a brilliant black from her regal face. She saw Wulfrun looking and waved. Wulfrun wished she knew her name. She waved back.
Riston wasn’t his proper name. He didn’t know what it was. Could be Jett. Pierson. Randy. Likely he had a family name, too, though he had no guesses as to what it could be and all the Bree names he’d ever heard seemed bizarre and strangely food-centric. He didn’t want to have a real name. He just wanted to be Riston of the elves. Riston of the Havens. That was who he was. He sat on the big smooth rock on the west side of the harbor and plucked absently at his lute strings. Nothing sounded right. Nothing fit how it was supposed it. He was meant to leave in the morning. Head east and find who he actually was. He didn’t want to go. What’s a name matter? he thought as he crossed his legs and tried to let the waves paint a tempo into his mind. Anything he tried to make manifest withered away. I know who I am. This is my home. A discordant note. He tried to retune, very aggressively. Even if I find my family somehow, it’s not like my Westron is good enough to communicate with them. His fingers clenched. It’s not fair. They can’t just ask me to leave like I’m some guest who’s worn out his- One of lute strings snapped against his fingers and on a deep-gut impulse he slammed his fist into the instrument’s wooden body. A crunch, and he’d broken his most prized possession. Riston sat for a moment, slowing his breathing, taking stock of the fist-shaped hole splintering his delicate elf-made lute, the most beautiful thing he’d ever owned. Then he put his face in his hands and started to cry.

So how do the decepticons meet reader in this universe? Is it while they are with the autobots around or did the reader get lost and they stumble across them?
You had to get out and find what you needed. So far you had fire proof vines and other absurb things to use to fix your ship. You may not have been a super scientist like your parents but growing up around them you knew the basics. The manual for your pod also had every simple instructions just incase something like this happened. This was never supposed to be a possible scenario but it had become one and now you had to adapt and move on. Just like always.
Carrying your backback and venturing past the Lost Lights boarder you look for what you need. They didn't have flat metal in this world rather wood and sap, rocks and plants, but nature could be just as powerful as technology if you could find what you needed. Glue didn't exist on this planet sadly but sap did and fire. You could use sap to glue panels back on your pod and then weld the panel back in place with fire. A little dangerous but a needed danger to get home or to fix your pod enough to get home.
Exploring the vast jungle that made up this part of the planet you found the tree Swerve had told you about. Using your pocketknife you gouge into it's bark before pulling it back when sap oozes from the tree. You apologize explaining it's for a good reason as you grab a stick. Poking it the stick stays sideways. Hitting the stick it stays still in the dripping sap. Looks like you found your glue. Taking out a jar you put it underneath the hole you created and let the sap drain in before quickly pulling away to not let it overflow. Snapping the lid of the jar shut you slip it into your bag before pausing. Turning at the sound of crunching leaves you pause body stiff.
Biting your tongue you see a group of rogue insects. You had been warned about possible threats outside the colony border but if that sap got you closer to home it was worth the risk. Staring down the bugs you rethink you believe and swallow thickly. Backing up slowly you step on a branch making a loud crunch noise. Eyes wide you stare as the insects turn and stare at you. Backing up slowly you see what appears to be a giant wolf spider.
Legs shaking you turn to run away but the spider shoots silk at you and soon your feet are stuck. Struggling to release yourself it inches closer. Mandibles now inches away from your face.
"Now what praytell are you dear?" One spindly leg reaches out to poke you and you flinch back. It stops seemingly understanding your uncomfortable and backs up a little. Circling you it hums.
"What is that thing?" It questions and you glare at the puesdo scorpion. It clicks it's claws and you do your best to hold your ground.
"IT has a name." You hiss at who you assume is the leader. The WolfSpider. By it's pleased hum of being adressed first you guess your right.
"Oh do tell us then." He chitters leg brushing against your cheek and under your chin. You pull away uncomfortable and it snickers at you.
"(Y/N)." You respond. It tilts it's head curious and repeats your name as if tasting it.
"Well (Y/N) you seem a bit lost."
"I was doing just fine until I got stuck." You answer coldly pulling at your legs as if to make a point. The Rhinercous beetle laughs, his purple armor glinting in the sun.
"They are quit entertaining SteelJaw." So his name was SteelJaw? Interesting. SteelJaw holds up a leg to silence the insect chitters but remains silent.
"So what is you'se supoosed to be?" You think a deer bettle comes up and nudged SteelJaw aside. He stares at your face and tilts his head staring at you. You stare back (e/c) meeting deep red eyes.
"They some sort of weird protoform?" The pseudo scorpion questions clicking his claws together.
"Okay one rude." You respond face set in a deep frown. "Two I'm not a protoform." SteelJaw reaches forward again and you flinch but this time he touches your hair.
"Indeed your not." He agrees. "So the question remains (Y/N). Who or what are you?" Glaring at him you tilt your head back so your hair slips from his grip.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" SteelJaw makes a low hiss in his throat.
"No matter, we'll just take you with us then." He states.
"Wait. Wait!" ThunderHoof slashes the webbing keeping you contained and grabs you. Struggling his grip tightens a bit and he craddles you close. "LET GO OF ME! LET GO!" Struggling against the beetle they begin dragging you off only for SteelJaw to get launched back. Growling the WolfSpider looks up to see a large Bumblebee.
"Put them down SteelJaw!" You look up and notice another group of bugs. A large Bumblebee standing in the front.
"So good too see you Bumblebee. What a surprise." The spider states before charging.
"Take them and get em out of here!" Being thrown at the Rhinoceros Beetle ThunderHoof charged to help SteelJaw.
"Hey put me down!" Hitting the Rhinoceros Beetle he simply chuckled at my assault.
"The name is SaberHorn my dear. And I'm sorry but we have other plans for you." Jumping up he holds you close as he begins flying away.
"OH NO YOU DON'T!" A pink and blue grasshopper jumps up before kicking SaberHorn. Wrapping around you protectively SaberHorn hits the ground hard. Grunting the Rhinoceros beetle tries to run away with you tucked under his wing but a different beetle charges him. Dropping you you roll to the side before running for cover.
Bugs shriek at eachother as they as fight but it's obvious SteelJaws colony is out numbered. Soon SteelJaw runs off but not before sending one last glance in your direction. His face was unreadable but his eyes said it all. He'd be back. And he would have you.
Shaking as you stare at the bugs before you, you wonder if you escaped one bad situation just to land in another.
With wide eyes you grab a stick prepared to defend yourself.
"(Y/N) right?" You look confused that he knows your name but nod. "I'm Knockout. It's a pleasure to meet you." The Red ladybug greets. He bows wings fluttering softly and you smile feeling a bit more at ease.
"... How do you know my name Knockout?" You ask curious.
"My Colony and I are very close to the Lost Light. The colony you've been staying at. We heard screaming and we saw you." He explains. Dropping the stick you nod.
"What were you doing out here?" Looking up at a giant Fire Ant you blink before shaking your head.
"Oh I crashed and I'm trying to repair my ship. Someone told me about how this trees sap was like what my people call glue. I need it to repair my pod." You explain. The Ant hums in thought before nodding.
"Did you get what you needed?" Bumblebee questions. Nodding he smiles. "We'll escort you home then." Smiling in repsonee you follow the bugs.
"What are your names since you already know mine." You ask curious.
"Oh how rude. I'm Bumblebee." Bee states. "I'm a warrior. Our leader there is Optimus." He nods towards the Fire Ant. "Bulkhead and WheelJack our resident wreckers." He points at two beetles who wave back at you. "Ultra Magnus our second in command." The giant Hercules beetle nods. "Arcee a scout." The grasshopper chirps. "Smokescreen a training warrior." A moth fluffs up his fur as he smiles at you. "Prowl and Jazz our information specialties." Prowl the black widow rolls his eyes at you but Jazz smiles and says hi. "DreadWing a tactician." The beetle flaps his wings at you. "And finally our medics Breakdown and Knockout." The ladybug and beetle who saved you from Saberhorn blink bowing their heads. "Were the Prime Colony." He finishes with a flourish.
"Well it's nice to meet you all." They hum and chat as they take you home.
Little do you know SteelJaw and his pack watch from the bushes as you walk away. They would be informing the other cons of you and if you walked out of the saftey of your friends territory again you would be there's.

Harry X OFC (AU)
Sequel to Brutality: In which Melody and Harry must relearn how to navigate one another among a flurry of changes.
Read previous parts here.
Author’s note: FINALLY HARRY SPEAKS A LIL. This chapter is a bit different but I hope y’all enjoy it anyway. Please, let me know! When you’re finished reading, please consider donating to the Black Covid Relief Fund!!! Black people are often disproportionately affected by medical emergencies. If you can’t donate, find some petitions to sign or another way to continue helping! Xx
Harry had barely slept. He watched the sun rise, painting the west wall of Melody’s room in rich pinks and golds, unwilling to leave the bed. He didn’t know how she’d feel if she woke and he wasn’t next to her. In fact, he didn’t know how she would feel when she woke and he was.
The answer came not long after he began to wonder.
Melody blinked her eyes open, facing the wall beside the bed. Her head felt weighted, like she’d had too much to drink. And she probably had, now that she thought about it. She usually rationed herself with wine.
The memory of wine triggered the memory of the events at dinner’s end. Melody had hoped, at first, that she’d had an incredibly vivid nightmare. But the wine was still sweet on her tongue, and the blood spattering the restaurant’s floor was not something that would come in dreams. She blinked again at the wall, dreading the day. But eventually she turned onto her back.
Harry was studying the marks in the ceiling when Melody shifted beside him. She watched his eyes begin to drift toward her face before snapping skyward again. He stiffened, wondering if she would speak to him. Wondering if she might climb right over him and pretend he didn’t exist.
“How could you do that?” she asked, the first words of the morning. Her voice was soft. Harry was suddenly grateful that this conversation had not taken place the night before.
“I...” Harry closed his eyes. It was ironic that now the pull of sleep threatened to keep them shut, when he needed to be alert. He fought to stretch them open and then looked down at the bruises dotting his knuckles. “I didn’ do it to upset you,” he finally answered. “Can yeh believe that?”
Melody sighed. “I believe that you don’t try to hurt me intentionally, yes.”
“‘M frustrated. I’ve already told yeh that, but ‘s like there’s this buzzing in my whole body and I can’ get rid of it unless I hit someone.”
“Sean is not some stranger you can knock around, Harry.” Melody sat up, bending her legs to hug her knees. “He doesn’t deserve that. I don’t deserve this. You accused me of sleeping with him. And I know that it was just a fucked up excuse to fight, but what if I hadn’t? What if I hadn’t known that? Do you understand how it feels to hear you say that?”
Harry’s heart leaped. Out of place, somehow, closer to his stomach than in his chest. He shook his head slowly. “I didn’ mean it,” he murmured.
“You keep saying things you don’t mean, Harry.” Melody released a short laugh, but it was the most humorless sound Harry had ever heard. “Do you think there aren’t consequences for that? You’re sorry for it after, so it’ll just go away? It doesn’t go away. I still remember you saying those things.
“And I keep forgiving you,” Melody continued, looking at the west wall, which was fading into a magnificent yellow as the sunrise ended. Her voice cracked and Harry worried that she was close to tears again. “And my heart fucking aches every time you do something like this without thinking about me, about how I might feel. Because I do think about you. I think about you in almost every single thing I do. And it’s not fair.”
Melody wiped the silent tears from her cheeks, relieved by her own honesty, apprehensive of Harry’s response.
Harry rubbed his eyes. Melody looked fully at him for the first time this morning and noticed how tired he appeared, the dark circles rimming his eyes, the drawn look of his face. She almost sympathized, remembering his gentle caresses when she had trouble sleeping.
“‘S not fair,” he agreed, swallowing thickly. “‘M so sorry, Mel. If I could take it back this time, I really would. And not just so yeh wouldn’ be angry. I fucked up.”
“I’m not angry, Harry,” Melody said, turning away when he looked back at her. “I’m not. I can’t be angry anymore.”
Harry struggled to pull himself up, leaning against the windowsill. His heart hammered within his chest as she avoided his eyes again. This felt like anger.
“Well, I am angry.” Melody’s gaze finally flickered to meet his. He found that he couldn’t hold it. “I’ve been angry for a long time and I don’ know how to let it out any other way. It shouldn’ have been Sean, but—Christ, at least he can hit back.”
Melody watched him lift a hand and prod at the edges of his nose. She pressed her lips into a thin line. “He shouldn’t have to hit back, Harry. You are out of control.”
“‘M not just—”
“You need a therapist,” Melody said, and Harry fell very quiet. He waited a few breaths to absorb what she’d said.
“I don’ need—”
“You do,” she insisted, sitting up straighter, as if it might lend her words more weight. “This is the most you’ve talked to me since I’ve known you, Harry, and it didn’t come until after you attacked Sean, after you said...what you said.” She drew in a deep breath. “You need to work out whatever’s going on in your head, and you won’t let me help. I’ve tried. So you need to talk to someone else.”
Melody watched Harry’s expression close off. She glanced at the greenery above his head and noticed the brown edges protruding from one of the pots. Her favorite plant was dying and she hadn’t noticed because she’d been so caught up in everything else that had been going on around her.
She waited for another minute, allowing Harry to form some type of response. But the silence persisted. And when she grew sick of waiting she unfolded her legs and lifted herself over him to leave the room.
***
“So Harry, what brings you here today?”
Harry still had his jacket on, zipped to his chest, prepared for a quick getaway. He scratched at the leather of the armchair he sat in with one fingernail, a nervous tick. Nervous was not an emotion familiar to him.
“My…my girlfriend,” he answered, low in his throat.
“What’s her name?”
“Melody.”
The therapist smiled, scribbling over the notepad she held in her lap. She glanced up when she’d finished, watching Harry scratch and tap at the arm of his chair, bounce the ball of his foot on the floor.
“Did Melody ask you to come?”
Harry nodded, now drawing his ankle up and over his other knee. He glanced out the window and watched the light at the next intersection shift from red to green, listened to impatient horns sound.
“Would you like to tell me about her?” the doctor prompted. Harry had already forgotten her name. Bidel or Beetle, something like that.
“What about her?”
“Well, how did you two meet?”
Harry breathed out a dry laugh. He pressed his lips together, but fought the part of him that wanted to keep silent and launched into a retelling of middle school, the bullies and his brother and Melody, and his first boxing class.
“You’ve been dating since sixth grade?” she asked. Beutel. Her name was Dr. Beutel.
“No, tha’s just when we met. I met her again a little over a year ago.”
Dr. Beutel scribbled feverishly. “It’s hard for me to believe you’ve lived in the States since you were that young. Your accent is rather distinct.”
“I moved back,” Harry informed her. “We moved back to Cheshire that year. I got kicked out of school.”
The therapist frowned, laying her pen down flat on her notepad. “For fighting,” she said, unquestioning.
Harry nodded.
“Do you fight professionally?”
Harry’s lips puckered. “Not anymore.”
“And how did...” she gestured to his face, scabbing cuts and yellowing bruises.
Harry sighed. “Uh, tha’s why she wanted me to come here. I kind of fought Sean. He’s my...my friend. Well, he was my trainer, really. And now he’s not. Now he’s her trainer.”
“Melody’s.”
“Yeah.”
Dr. Beutel shook her head almost imperceptibly. She stroked the pendant on her necklace once and then crossed her legs, pulled her notepad closer.
“Okay, how about we start from the beginning? Your family.”
Harry drew a hand over his face, carefully avoiding his nose. “Not my favorite subject.”
“So I’ve guessed.” She smiled wanly. “You’ve talked a little bit about your brother. Half-brother, right? What about your parents? Do you get along?”
“With my mum. Haven’ talked to my dad in almost six years.” Harry was surprised at his own bluntness.
“And why’s that?”
“Because he doesn’ give a fuck about me. Instead of protectin’ me he let Colton live in our house.”
“And do you think Colton would hurt you?”
Harry barked out a laugh. He’d forgotten that this woman didn’t know about the strangest parts of his life yet. She only had snippets.
“He shot me last year,” he deadpanned, “in the head.” He pulled back the hair brushing his left ear to reveal the pockmarked scars in his scalp. “And I was in a coma all summer. Sorry, I should’ve led with that.”
Dr. Beutel froze, staring at him, her fingers hovering over her pen.
“Oh, also my mum has brain cancer. She’s been in and out of hospitals since we moved back to Cheshire.”
Harry waited while his therapist began to reconcile this with what she already knew about him. The seconds ticked by. She wrote in her notepad without speaking another word to him and then she glanced at her watch and gasped.
“Oh, Harry, I’m so sorry. We’re over time for today. Can you come back next week?”
Harry sighed. He didn’t want to come back. Today had felt like a joke. It didn’t make him feel any better, it hadn’t even tapped into the restlessness sizzling just beneath the surface of his skin. But he nodded as he left.
“I look forward to seeing you,” Dr. Beutel said as he closed the door.
***
A week and a very meager amount of progress with Melody later, Harry sat in the same chair, somehow more relaxed. Melody had barely spoken to him since the morning after her birthday, not that he blamed her. But if he felt lonely before, now even Bea paid him the slightest mind. And Josie was still pissed that he’d put her leftovers at risk.
“How are you doing?” Dr. Beutel asked.
“Peachy.”
“You sure you didn’t mean cheeky?”
Harry grinned for the first time in what felt like an eternity. He tipped his shoulder up. “Not completely sure.”
Dr. Beutel smiled back. She slid her feet to one corner of her armchair, twirling the pen she held between her fingers.
“Just before our last session ended, you told me about your mother. She has recurring cancer?”
Harry nodded, his smile slipping faster than the changing traffic light outside the window.
“Are you close with your mother?”
“Well,” Harry began, stalling for a moment to ponder the question, “I guess yeh could say that. I haven’ seen her in almost two years but I talk to her a lot.”
“Has Melody spoken with her?”
Harry felt his own face contort. “Uh, no. I call my mum when she’s not around.”
“Why is that?”
He huffed out a thoughtful breath. “I dunno, really.”
Dr. Beutel began to write. Her pen twisted slowly across a clean page of her notepad. “Do you think,” she asked, without looking up, “that it might be because you separate your life into two categories?”
“What?”
“Your life in England, your family, I think that you might compartmentalize them. Separate from Melody, I mean. And even boxing. I think that Melody feels outside of that space for you, and that might be why it bothers you so much—her fighting and you not. It might seem like she’s bleeding across the borders that you’ve put in place.”
Harry didn’t know how to respond. He glanced down at the ugly scabs that spotted his knuckles, still pulling at his skin every time he stretched his hand.
“You live with Melody?”
Harry nodded, still not meeting the doctor’s eyes. He was worried what else she might see if he were to look fully at her.
“And did you live with her before? Before your injury, I mean.”
“No.”
From this angle, he could still see Dr. Beutel nodding to her notes.
“So, Harry,” she began, piecing together the information that she’d gathered, “did you have any girlfriends back in England?”
Harry shook his head, clearing his throat. “No, ‘m not really one for relationships.”
“Well, maybe you weren’t before, but I think you are now.”
“What?” He looked up at last and Dr. Beutel was smiling at him, her head tilted.
“Melody asked you to speak with a therapist. Would you ever have done that before? Would you talk about yourself this much with a stranger if it wasn’t for her?”
Harry was quiet again. This was something that had worried him for nearly a year. Half of the things he’d done since he began seeing Melody, he never would have dreamed of doing before her. This wasn’t the person he’d grown used to being.
“I’m sorry for everything that’s happened to you,” the therapist said, when he didn’t return the conversation. “You’ve experienced a lot in your life. A lot more than most people could claim to have experienced in an entire lifetime, but I think you’re in a good place right now. It sounds to me like Melody cares very much for you. And even if it hasn’t been a conscious thought, you feel like you don’t deserve it.”
“I don’!” Harry nearly shouted. He paused and sat back in his chair, collecting his emotions and lining them up. He knitted his fingers together over his stomach. “I don’. It was her fuckin’ birthday and I hit her trainer—”
“Your friend,” Dr. Beutel corrected. She hadn’t even flinched at his outburst. “You hit Sean, your friend. These two areas of your life—fighting and Melody—they’re blending and he’s a large player in that mix. Do you think you don’t deserve Melody because you picked a fight with Sean, or do you think you picked a fight with Sean because you feel like you don’t deserve Melody?”
Harry’s mind spun. “What, you mean like ‘m tryin’ to fuck up on purpose?”
“Perhaps,” she answered with a nod. “Perhaps some part of you is trying to find a way out.”
Harry sighed and sifted a hand through his hair, fingertips brushing his scars. “What should I do?”
The therapist laughed gently and shook her head. “I mean, I’m not a fortune-teller, Harry. I don’t know what will help you patch up your relationship and I don’t know what will let you out of it. But I do think you need to put in some positive effort if Melody means something to you. Try to redirect your aggression. Maybe go to one of her matches?”
The suggestion was quiet, soft, a mere idea. And Harry’s heart ticked uncomfortably at the sensation of being seen. Would anyone else have been able to untangle the complex knots of his life with the information he’d given Dr. Beutel? Would Melody? Harry wasn’t sure, and he didn’t know if he wanted anyone else to examine him this meticulously. But he said his thanks before he left, anyway, and the entire way back to the apartment, he felt like he was studying his own thoughts from a new perspective.
