The Greatest Ace
Iwaizumi x f! reader
The whole gymnasium was silent when the ball dropped on the floor after it bounced off Oikawa's arms, Iwaizumi held his breath and he suddenly heard the deafening cries of the crowd, some were shocked, some were celebrating and some were sad. All of those emotions didn’t escape Seijo's ace, It's not like he had never lost before, but this game meant a lot not just for him but for his whole team, he actually had hoped that the dream that he and his best friend had ever since they were kids will be fulfilled yet here they are filling their stomachs with ramen as they cry.
After the third years played volleyball to try and cope with the sadness and frustration, Oikawa and Iwaizumi had also parted ways to go home, Seijo's ace quietly walked with his hands in his pocket as he recalled the last minutes of the game, Oikawa was right, everyone was giving their all and Karasuno was just slightly above them but still he couldn't help but blame himself, if he only made that point from Oikawa's toss…
He had to stop walking to look up at the night sky and he silently told himself to get better and work harder. Just as he was about to start walking again, he heard his name being called so he looked around just to see you waving at him, "Haji!" you called once more and ran to his direction. You almost tripped and Iwaizumi held your arms so you could find your balance again.
"What are you doing here? It's already late." he told you, obviously worried but you just smiled, Iwaizumi frowned but he held his breath when you hugged him tightly. It was as if his arms has a body in its own, he wrapped his arms around you and he let himself bury his face on your neck as he sobbed like a child, "Congratulations, Haji. You're still the greatest ace for me." you told him as you brushed your fingers through his hair.
Iwaizumi smiled against your neck. Facing failure was scary, painful and Iwaizumi was trying to avoid it but now that he has you beside him, with your warm arms wrapped around him, he felt better, all those pain and frustration almost gone.
"Sorry, I wanted to win and-"
"Shh…you're my winner."
Iwaizumi is seen as a tough guy in the eyes of others, a brute who can make even the other guys admire him but when he's not seen by others, when all he sees is your eyes staring directly into his, he lets himself show his vulnerability.
"I love you…" he whispered as he pulled away from the hug, you wiped away his tears and tiptoed to kiss him in his cheeks, caressing his face in a gentle manner that makes his knees weak.
"I love you, the greatest ace."

today has sucked so much,, where’s Iwaizumi Hajime (27) athletic trainer to take care of me when i need it ???
all you have to do is send one off text. something in your punctuation or diction slightly off is all it takes for him to know today was just one of those days. he has dinner (your favorite meal, to be exact) ready for you when you get off of work.
and then when dinner is finished, the plates washed, dried, and stored away he drags you to bed for an early night. his big, big arms wrapped tight around you. he doesn’t say anything, but you know he’s trying to let you know that he’ll always protect you. won’t let your world cave in and fall, that he’ll help shoulder that burden.
sigh, a girl can dream can’t she

Tumblr media
Iwaizumi Hajime was always intrigued and always curious.
Hajime, 6 years old, had a beautiful mind, a vivid imagination that allowed him to use paintbrushes to colour his worldview. He would put glitters on the shimmering sky, sticking wildflowers on the blank canvas to make it his own reality - he was young and naive, as he did not understand the complexities of the outside life, only living in his own bubble. Hajime would always go outside after eating his breakfast, catching beetles inside the woods and carved his name upon every tree.
One night, Hajime swore he could see something going through the air. He saw a woman wearing a black robe and a long hat, flying in circles as butterflies fluttered around her, he saw her fingers were glowing, and then - a pink smoke coming out from her fingers, the woman vanished into thin air.
Hajime was in awe. He quickly went inside the cottage and told his parents about all the things he had seen. But Hajime's parents were not pleased, they exchanged dismayed glances, a thought seemed to pass between them before they returned their gazes to their only son. They're extremely cautious, extremely terrified, a worried expression plastered on their face.
"Son, the woman is a witch. All witches are bad, there are no good witches. They burned houses, tortured souls, casting evil spells to people - witches are from hell, Hajime. When a witch passes by a town, the flowers, and plants, all die without a reason."
"And we are not going to talk about witches now, okay? Go to bed."
He nodded quietly and went to his room. Hajime didn't seem to understand them, as his mind was still thinking about the woman. For him, she was an angel who came down from heaven, her entire appearance was ethereal, almost a supernatural presence, though it was hazy and misty tonight he couldn't see her face properly, but he remembered that the woman was smiling at him.
If she was a witch, then she was definitely a good witch.
Hajime looked out of the window, the flower garden that was planted by his mother was blooming beautifully, so why did his parents lie to him?
                                                   ───────
Many seasons passed, and Iwaizumi Hajime became a knight at the age of 21.
People worshipped the knights as gods, they never once saw them as mortal men - a knight was bold enough to ride their horses to the battlefield, slicing the enemies without hesitation, and they never rest, never quivered, and never feared.
They still shine brightly in the darkest of moments, and this is what made them knights.
Iwaizumi Hajime, he was a knight.
Hajime was enormously strong and tall. He was a talented young man who surpassed the famous knight in the world. He was an amazing rider and fighter, and he would always win a battle when challenging a random knight to fight against him. Hajime was always well-prepared, he trained himself with each sword every day to prepare for the worst - he might die any day, and even if he died, he didn't want himself to have died in vain.
He was given a mission to hunt down witches. The king had already declared that witches were evil by their nature, and all witches were demonized - they manipulated innocent people to harm the others, they wanted more power to rule the world, they wanted people to suffer. Witchcraft was a forbidden fruit to entice people to do very destructive things, people who were the victims of witchcraft would slowly lose a human heart and their humanity, which made them unable to differentiate what is right or wrong.
Hajime was skeptical about it, but he would not dare to disobey the king's orders.
He had been walking along this forest for over 4 hours, searching for clues, figuring out bits and pieces using his knowledge and trying to come up with his own solution. But Hajime was confused, the clues were so little, and this was all that he had to go on. He remembered seeing a witch once, but it seems like the witch was harmless.
Hajime always thought that the woman was an angel. If she was a witch, then she was definitely a good witch.
Hajime let out a tired sigh and decided to call it a day. The sky was slowly getting darker and the wind was starting to pick up. Hajime needed to find a warmer shelter to stay for the night. The atmosphere was starting to get cold and chilly while the wind had slowly become harsher. He rubbed his palms together quickly, letting friction warm them, and he went further into the forest to pick up some woods.
Strangely enough, he saw cherry blossoms floating through the air. He rubbed his eyes numerous times to get a clearer view of the unexpected situation, and it was true - his eyes didn't deceive him at all. The cherry blossoms were real, the scent of the rich and sweet honey-jasmine filled the air with a lovely fragrance, and it made him want to stay there forever.
Hajime thought it was weird. Spring ended a while ago, and now it was already the second month of autumn. He could still see autumn leaves scattered on the ground, so why cherry blossoms? When he looked up, one of the cherry blossoms fell on his head, he did not understand why he was seeing pink flowers in the air, he wasn't hallucinating, was he?
He decided to go deeper into the forest, and he soon realised that the flowers were coming from a certain direction. Hajime decided to follow the flowers to its source, he kept telling himself that he would find it, and he was not going to give up easily.
The sweet, intoxicating smell was getting stronger and stronger, he quickly walked past the trees and finally reached a small lake, the lake was surrounded by autumn trees - but this was not all, Iwaizumi Hajime was beyond speechless, because the tree in the center was a cherry blossom tree.
It was indeed a miracle, who would have thought that a cherry blossom tree could survive for the entire autumn season? Hajime couldn't believe his eyes, the view was so heavenly that it took his breath away - it was definitely no ordinary cherry tree, because, in his eyes, the tree was a god's creation.
Hajime stood under the cherry tree for a few blank moments, until he heard someone calling him.
"Hey, you can actually...see this cherry tree?"
Hajime quickly turned around, and he was surprised that a woman was standing behind him.
Oh dear, Iwaizumi Hajime had never seen a beautiful woman like her before. Well, to describe her as beautiful would be too simple, this woman was a goddess, an angel - and the flowers, the stars, the moon, the entire galaxy were merely just an accessory to set off her beauty. God blessed her with such pulchritudinous looks, the woman was even prettier than the sculpture of a beautiful naked female that he had seen at the palace. Her voice was like melted honey, her long black hair framed her face like a halo, and the woman was glowing...
He nodded quietly, and he took a step forward and faced the woman in front of him, his face flushed a deep red.
"You know, only people who believed in good witches are able to see this cherry tree...because they have a pure heart and a kind soul..." she cupped his face, then went up on tiptoe and kissed his cheek.
"Thank you for believing me, my lovely knight."

Behind the shadow
(IwaizumiHajime x GN! reader) soulmate au! manager au!
Iwaizumi Hajime lived behind his best friend’s shadow; every person he liked, was stolen by the infamous Oikawa Tooru, who even if he already had his own soulmate, everyone was over hills for him! So when they told him there would be a new manager for the team, he wasn’t surprised that they had applied just to be near Oikawa. But when he met you, things changed for him, his heart stoped when he saw you. He could finally see colors.
Your beautiful hair was shining with the court’s light, your smile was as bright as the sun, or at least as the one he could see until a few moments ago. His eyes started watering, but he held the tears so no one could see him cry. He was so happy that he had met you, even if you two hadn’t talked yet.
“Iwa-Chan!” His friend screamed at him in his left ear, which wasn’t a surprise, since he always did that. “You are not paying attention to me! First day of practice, we need to start so we can go to nationals!”
But he didn’t listen. He didn’t even insulted his friend back, he was so stunned by every detail of you. Hajime was lost in your eyes.
Until you saw him too.
You opened your eyes as much as you could. You looked him from the head to the feet, Iwaizumi’s heart and mind started racing. His thought wandered from “would them like me?”, “are they happy?”.
“Iwa-Chan!” His friend kept screaming at him.
“What?!” Iwaizumi snapped from his thoughts. But he didn’t realized how loud he was.
Everyone was looking at him, even you. Oikawa looked in the direction his friend's sight was before, so he understood what had happened in a second. Everyone stoped watching the scene when they found out who where the ones fighting, since it was practically normal that the captain annoyed his friend.
Out of curiosity you started walking towards them. Since you were the new team manager and you didn’t know very well their “dynamic”, you thought that maybe something serious had happened and you had to mediate some kind of reconciliation. Not because you knew that one of them was you soulmate, of course not! (Or at least that’s what you wanted to say to yourself)
“Excuse me, can you tell me what happened?” You asked Hajime, since Oikawa disappeared as fast as he could when you started coming their way “Maybe I can help you. I’m y/n, your soul— new manager”
You blushed as you thought that maybe telling him the actual truth (even if he already new), was rushing things a bit.
“I’m Iwaizumi, nice to meet you. Regarding the other guy situation, he’s an idiot, don’t mind him”
Hajime offered his hand to shake it, so when you did he knew that from that moment on, your hand was the only one he will ever touch.

Part 5. Maybe He's Not Too Bad
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There used to be a time when seeing my name pop up every so often on my timeline was exciting. A new story after every game. Nekomata Izumi scores the final shot! Nekomata Izumi leads her team to victory! Now, after a year, seeing my name just makes her angry. It’s crazy how something could change so quickly, seeing my name spoken about with such greatness and pride, to then everything about me being tied to meltdowns and failures, and now with malicious undertones.
I don’t remember when I started to care, having ignored the past two posts that included my name. I don’t remember when I found the time to check my phone amidst the training sessions with Nekoma or the attempts to hide from the Fukurodani team. I don’t remember when a casual glance at the time turned into hours of scrolling through a thousand responses, most of which called me a leech, a desperate bitch, a disgrace. All I could remember was why I tried to leave everything behind in the first place. Through the hair pulls and tears, I remembered why I tried to forget. The pain never got any better or any easier to manage, it only hurt even more that people wouldn’t let it go. They wouldn’t see past the one thing that happened, wouldn’t acknowledge who I once was or what I was once able to achieve.
I ran a hand through my hair with far greater rigorousness than intended, letting out a choked sob at the throbbing pain circling my head as strands of my hair came out along with my fingers. I tried to turn the phone off, to turn it face down and leave the room, but I couldn’t. Every second I spent scrolling was because I couldn’t help myself. Curiosity fuelled my fire.
Three short knocks tapped against my door and I tried to suck in a deep breath as the man on the other side called my name.  “Izumi? I’m coming in,” Kuroo said quietly. So softly that I couldn’t help but think it meant someone cared– couldn’t help but cry a little harder.
“Go away Kuroo!” I yelled, voice strained, tone unforgivably weak.
There was silence and I thought that maybe he had listened to me for once in his life, but then the doorknob turned and the door creaked open. My eyes widened, realising the state of myself and my head whipped to turn away from him, his reaction unreadable. I heard the door knob click as he closed the door behind him and soft footsteps padded forward shortly after.
“What are you doing here?” I couldn’t help but shout, pressing the palms of my hands against my eyes, willing the tears to stop flowing. “Get out!”
“I’m not leaving,” He whispered. The bed dipped beside me, holding his weight up as he scooted an inch closer. “I just… wanted to make sure you’re okay.”
“I asked you to leave!” I yelled, finally turning back to him. My hands acted on their own, pushing furiously at his chest. He didn’t budge, only flinching at the movement but regaining himself once I started crying harder.
My head was pounding. As if someone was hitting my head with a brick a million times over. The tension in my shoulders was unbearable, holding the weight of a thousand thoughts and regrets. I widened my eyes when my hands came back to their original position, sobbing loudly into the corners of my arms.
“I’m sorry–” I blubbered. “I didn’t mean to– I’m sorry, I’m so sorry Kuroo..” The inner corners of my eyes were on fire, burning as another tear fell right after the other. “Just please leave me alone, I want to be here alone.”
“I don’t know you well enough to know what to say to make you feel better,” He said with a small grin. I looked up at him with furrowed eyebrows, scoffing at his response.
“What?”
“But I’m going to sit here and wait for you. You can yell at me, you can hit me, you can swear and you can do whatever you need to. You can pretend that I’m one of those people that says shit but knows absolutely nothing about you.” He continued and I couldn’t keep my eyes off of him. Off of that gentle smile, the warmth of his eyes, the care in them.
“But I’m going to wait. I’ll wait until you’re feeling better, and then I’ll leave.”
Wait. Patience. The one thing I’ve always hoped for. The one thing I wish people would have done for me back then. I looked at him through the tears soaking my eyes, I sat through the silence he offered, waiting for a response. Just waiting.
My head dropped, my chin touching my chest, and my body leaned forward, pressing my forehead against his chest. I let go of my lip, red and bruised from biting it, just wanting to cry. I just wanted to cry. The sobs came harder than before, ripped from my chest, and laid out on the floor. My stomach hurt, and cramped as I tried to catch my breath and my head began to feel light, as if someone was finally holding the bricks that slammed against me.
And there he sat. With a soothing hand rubbing the back of my hand, he sat there and waited.  I don’t remember how much longer we were in the room. All I remember was that Kuroo waited until I was feeling better, and then he left.

Part 4. Nekoma Camping Trip!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bus screeched as it came to a stop, rattling beside me as I looked down at the clipboard in my hands. They were supposed to be leaving in thirty minutes and the team hadn’t yet shown up. I gripped the clipboard harder, knuckles turning white and hands beginning to shake as I read off the unchecked names again and again. “I wake up an hour early and no one even shows up on time,” I whispered to myself, turning to eye the bus driver who had begun slouching in his seat. He turned to me, eyebrows raised, probably wondering why a young girl had replaced the old man in the red tracksuit.
“Izumi–” “Where is everyone?” I huffed annoyingly, turning at the sound of my name. My body tensed up almost painfully when Kenma stood there, shrugging nonchalantly. “Sorry Kenma…” I muttered, dropping the clipboard to the floor and massaging the joints in my fingers. A dull ache washed over my body, starting from my hands and working its way up to my head. It only took seconds for it to turn into a soft pounding sensation at the back of my head. “I’m just stressing out.” “I’m sure they’ll be here soon,” He shrugged again, eyes glued to his phone.
I looked down at my own phone where several missed messages from Tooru had popped up in the last five minutes. I could feel an itch on the corner of my mouth where my frown was twitching into a smile, snickering as he complained about misplacing his phone charger. The quiet laughter had quickly turned into silence as I read the last few messages, a splurge of i miss you’s and class isn't the same without my best friend. The pounding only got harder and louder from there, creeping its way to my temples. I closed my eyes, afraid that they would bulge from my head, and sighed.
Being here was hard. Feeling alone was harder. Hating everything about it made it the worst.
“You okay?” Kenma asked awkwardly, scratching the back of his neck as he moved his phone away from his face. “Yeah.” I gave him a flash of a smile and turned back to the bus driver. “I’m sorry for taking so long, they’ll be here soon.” I hope.
The driver only nodded with a grunt and laid his head down on the wheel.
“They’re here now,” Kenma pointed in the distance to the crowd of boys rushing towards them, some laughing together as Yamamoto pushed past them, racing towards the bus.
I stepped to the side, afraid he would barrel into me and picked up the clipboard that I abandoned only moments ago.
“What took you guys so long?” I said, grinding my teeth, too tired to hide the annoyed bite in my tone. “Sorry Nekomata-san!” Lev said, straightening his posture. “We saw this nice restaurant on the way here and Inuoka and I got hungry.” “Sorry! The food looked so good,” Inuoka said, rubbing his stomach in satisfaction.
I looked at Kenma who shrugged once more, stuffing his hands into the pockets of his pants.
“It's.. okay, I just want to take the roll call and get everyone on the bus please. My dad helped me make a seating chart so that everyone could get some rest on the bus,” I cleared my throat. “Lev and Yaku–” “What?” Lev exclaimed, looking down at Yaku who only smiled smugly up at him. “Yamamoto and Kai,” I continued. “Fukunaga and Inuoka, Shibayama and Teshiro, and Kuroo and Kenma.”
One by one, they marched onto the bus, the driver readying himself and the buttons on the control. I was the last to step on, making sure I had my bag with me before finding my seat at the front of the bus, right behind the bus driver.
“Cheer up, we’re going camping,” Kuroo said from behind me, laughing to himself. “Stop,” Kenma muttered, pulling his friend back.
I didn’t say anything, numbed by the pain crushing my skull and the ache in my shoulders. Instead, I closed my eyes, leaned back into my seat, and tried my best to fall asleep and forget I was even here.

Part 3. The Elusive Past of Coach Nekoma
It had been a week since I moved my essentials from the dorms at Aoba Johsai to my dad’s house. Tooru and I shared a hearty goodbye before I left where he treated me to a meal that cut short after we had been bombarded by a crowd of fans that spotted the ‘familiar’ back of his head. He promised to try and visit, and that was all he could do. Which was enough for me. I didn’t tell Iwaizumi that I was leaving. When I finally felt settled in, I redecorated my old room, tidied it up and renewed my closet that had been filled with clothes that I abandoned a year ago. Most of them no longer fit me. Mainly the jerseys. There was a certain weight on my chest when I held them up, their colours and design almost unrecognisable unless completely unfolded. For some reason, those hurt the most to throw out. I felt my hand cramp when I tossed them to the side, pushing them deeper into the pile of clothes that would soon find their new home in the trash.
The organisation had come to a stop when the clock ticking in the corner of my room became a little too loud. Distant shuffles came nearer, followed by a cough.
“You should have been at the school by now, Izumi,” my dad said, tapping his wrist as if he had a watch on it. I smiled thinly and nodded, grabbing my bag and phone before leaving with a quiet ‘see you soon, dad’.
Their practices usually started after school. That’s what dad said. Some came late, some came early, some came on time. My feet were already moving by the time I hopped off the bus, beginning a light sprint towards the school’s gym. To my surprise, I was greeted by an eerie silence. No balls, no slaps, no laughs. Entering the gym on my own was a whole nother feeling. Chills ran through my body and my heart skipped a beat as a handful of breaths were stolen from my lungs. For a moment, I couldn’t breathe, I could only move. I walked as if the floor wasn’t there, shifting my weight onto planes of nothing, existing in a realm of something. I got used to the cold biting my arms, embracing me like something uncomfortably familiar.
“What am I even doing here?” I uttered to myself, looking at a stray volleyball on the floor. I leaned down and picked it up, sighing at the poles extruding from the floors, the net yet to be strung up.
It took me thirty minutes to do it on my own. Thirty minutes of dragging the net across the ground, realising that it was way heavier than I remembered it being. I strained myself, pushing harder on my good leg and shuffling across the floors with the other. When I had finally gotten it up, I stared at my work and shook my head. Disappointment lingered in the air, feeling more bitter than the cold did. I picked up the stray volleyball once again, running it in circles against the palms of my hands.
“I hate this place!” I screamed, throwing the ball forward. It flung against the net, bouncing off and back onto the floor with a weak slap.
Again, it found its way into my hands. I don’t remember when, but somewhere between the I hate this place and the I hate this game and the I hate this, I had picked the ball up once, twice, three times, maybe even four. Each time, the ball landed back in front of me. Each time, the two handed throws became one handed throws, which then became a weak attempt at a spike, which then became a movement of memory. My muscles, imagining the patterns, indulging in the memory, the feelings, the adrenaline, fought to show that my body could never forget as well as my mind had tried to.
“Fuck!” I shouted as my wrist flicked forward, slamming my palm against the ball. Finally, the ball flew through the air, shooting past the net and onto the other side of the court, filling the gym with echoes of the ball hitting the floor. Finally, the ball no longer landed in front of me.
“Wow.” A low, sly whistle mixed in with the last moments of the balls’ echo, followed by a singular clap. “That was pretty good form.”
I gasped and turned to the sound, my cheeks warming at the sight of Nekoma’s captain leaning against the gym’s door frame. His lips curled into a smirk, his arms crossed over one another.
“Didn’t your mother teach you not to stare,” I bit back at him, huffing in annoyance.
“I was complimenting you?” He scoffed.
“Well don’t,” I turned back away. “It’s uncomfortable.”
“Fine.” Heavy footsteps made their way towards the centre of the gym, closer to me, closer to the ball. I watched as he leaned down and picked the ball up from the other side of the court. “You looked stiff and the ball almost hit the net.”
“I don’t need pointers.”
“Exactly.” He smiled again, a smug tone to his voice. “Aren’t you supposed to be our coach?”
“Everyone can make a mistake every once in a while. Maybe give the pointers to your own team, captain, the one that’s actually playing in a tournament.”
“Don’t you ever get tired of being so snarky?”
I shut my mouth and shook my head. There was no use arguing. I already hated the feeling of being here. Adding another form of tension would only push me to make a decision that would break my father’s heart.
“So, what were you? Outside? Opposite?” He leaned down a little, squinting his eyes as his thumb and pointer finger rubbed at his chin in contemplation. “You’re a bit too short to be middle.”
“That’s none of your business.”
“It was a good spike though,” he chuckled to himself. “Maybe libero?”
“Drop it,” I urged, biting back the curses dancing on the tip of my tongue.
“Too mean to be a captain.”
“Fuck you!” I shouted, grinding my teeth together to say anything further.
His mouth had opened to respond, cut short by the cheery ‘hellos’ of Yaku and Lev as they entered the gym. I spared no glance towards him as I retreated towards the storage room, the weight on my body growing more uncomfortable with the added heat of a glare burning into the back of my head.

k.t | Take A Chance
PART 1. Welcome to Nekoma High School
I never doubted that volleyball had been a part of my life since I was born. If I knew anything about my dad, he probably asked my mum’s midwife if he could swap the hospital swaddle with a Nekoma-themed blanket.
My whole life had been a cycle of sleeping, eating, and training. The gym was my second home, and my team was a second family. There was a certain serenity that welcomed me every time I held the ball, and a specific kind of love that embraced me as I welcomed the pain in the palm of my hands as I struck the ball down to the other side of the court.
I was nine when I landed my first successful spike.
“Izumi-chan!” My dad sang my name, drawing my attention to the multi-coloured volleyball flying in the air. Like a dance, my feet acted before my mind did and my body flung itself forward and up towards the ball.
He laughed and clapped his hands as my arms swung in a movement that had been so deeply etched in my brain it became a habit to do it at everything that flung towards me. I heard it hit the ground before I felt the vibrations on my arm, the feeling of my hand slamming against the ball. When gravity pulled me downwards, the ground shook and static buzzed in my brain. It sounded like a crowd roaring my name or maybe like a million trophies clanging together.
“Did you see that?” I asked my dad, and the only thing he could do was smile and nod.
“That was amazing,” He laughed, clapping his hands together once. “You are going to be one of the best volleyball players to grace Japan!”
I knew he was being overzealous. Any dad would say that to their child. But I couldn’t help but believe him. I was going to be one of the best volleyball players to grace Japan. I had to be. It was the only thing I could have ever wanted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My dad’s house had never looked this daunting before. The windows to his life were concealed by curtains, the lights turned off from the inside. After several months of avoiding his messages or telling him that I was too swamped with assignments to come over, I never thought that the house would be as changed as our relationship was. The grey walls darkened, the garden overgrown. Rust covered the hinges of the gates, now needing an extra push to swing open. Even then, the gate creaked and screeched as it eased forward. For the first time, I felt like the house no longer welcomed me home.
“Dad?” I called out, inching forward through the tall grass, cringing at the shrubbery that tickled my ankles. “I got your message, what did you need to talk about?”
A series of throaty coughs alerted Izumi to the man standing at the side of the house, picking leaves off of the remains of a children’s volleyball net. “I’m over here,” He called back after clearing his throat.
“What are you doing outside? You need to be inside, away from all this mess.”  I scoffed, rushing to his side. My hands came down on his shoulders, helping him away from the deconstruction of my old plastic toy, now a withering, distant memory. “I thought you were bedridden.”
“I need to keep moving,” He sighed. “It’s too depressing to stay still like that.”
I nodded and hummed, guiding him back inside. The interior of the house was no different from the outside. Grayscale and dark. It looked like the pictures taken for leased houses, unlived and impersonal. I felt my chest ache a little, eyes roaming across bare walls as I led my father down onto a chair in the living room. Once upon a time, pictures of my achievements used to scatter the walls. Several trophies lined the now empty bookshelves. I had them taken down when I moved out. I was going to bring them with me, hide them away in a box never to be found again, but no doubt my dad had them stored somewhere secret. He couldn’t give away those memories, and refused to have them taken from him.
“How have you been?” I asked, realising that my throat had run dry. I massaged the bottom of my neck and cleared my throat. My eyes remained on my dad, took in the dark undereyes and hidden smile lines.
“As good as an old man like me can be,” He chuckled and I tried to laugh along with him. An awkward silence filled the air as he leaned into the arms of the chair. “I’ve missed you, please visit me more.”
A sigh caught in the back of my throat and I tore my gaze away. There it was. The I miss you’s and the I love you’s. Of course he did. I never forgot that he did, never doubted it in my head. But I couldn’t bring myself to look at him without seeing what I hated the most about myself. The sadness in his eyes was too much to handle sometimes. The guilt was all-consuming every time I said it back. Instead of evading his pleas, as I usually did, I grabbed both of his hands and smiled.
“I’ll try,” I said, not a promise but something.
Another moment of silence invaded the space. Another hair that rose on the back of my neck as I waited for him to talk. There was something he needed to say. I could tell when he fiddled his fingers together, his gaze flying back and forth to everything but me. When he finally opened his mouth to speak, I braced myself for what was coming.
“I need you to fill in for me… just until I get better.”
“What do you mean?” I asked. Fill in for him?
“I need you to be Nekoma’s coach,” He sighed, tensing his jaw.
“Are you joking?” I scoffed, immediately going to shake my head. “There are other coaches.”
“None that knows the game like I do, none that can lead them as I can,” He defended himself. “You know the game, you’ve played and you’re my daughter.”
“That doesn’t mean anything,” I laughed incredulously. There were coaches that were waiting their whole lives to lead an upcoming team like Nekoma. While I had abandoned the sport, news still got around about this new team with so much potential, of course led by my very own father. “There are others.”
“Izumi,” He sighed deeply. “You were one of the best players of their generation. Don’t you think it would be good to dip your toe back in? Even if just as a coach.”
“Stop!” I said, raising my voice. “You will not do this to me again. I told you the last time I saw you, I am not stepping back into that stupid sport.”
“Alright,” He huffed. “Never mind stepping back in. I taught you how to play. I coached you. These boys would feel comfortable being taught by someone like minded, by someone who is as familiar with the game as I have made them to be.”
“Get someone else.”
“Please, Izumi.”
I flinched at the tone, pleading and desperate. He leaned forward, placing his head into his hands. Never have I seen him like this. So distressed, so dispirited.
“These boys mean a lot to me… please, just until I get better. Once I’m back, you can leave, you can never look back at volleyball again, just please do this.”
One second passed.
Maybe even a few minutes.
I willed myself to say no. Hoped my answer would endure. And then I looked at him again. The desolation living behind his eyes, void of warmth, of comfort. Everything fell apart at that.
“Fine.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My heart pounded as I neared the gym, hearing the familiar sounds of volleyballs smacking against the walls, floors, maybe even the ceilings. Quiet laughs turned to boisterous ones, small chatter turned crowded. It took everything in me not to turn on my heel, get back on that bus and leave. But every time I hesitated, my dad’s face flashed in my eyes. So I persisted. I forced my feet to step forward, to continue marching on.
When I finally reached the open doors, my mouth fell open at the sight. The team was split off into pairs, practicing their receives, arms red and chests rising and falling as they ran back and forth to make it to the ball. A sense of dread washed over me as something uncomfortable hollowed out my stomach. My eyes followed the curve of the ball as gravity guided it through the air and back down again, making me feel even dizzier than before. An ache embraced my head and I had to close my eyes to ground myself again, making sure that my feet were still touching the ground.
“Hello? Can I help you?” A voice said and my eyes shot open, eyeing up the man standing before me. He held a warm smile and I almost felt envious of the kindness he radiated as he pushed back the bits of his raven hair that covered his forehead.
“Sorry,” I muttered. “I’m Nekomata Izumi, your new… coach.”
I cringed as his face lit up, his smile brightening and curving even wider than before. It almost made me feel uncomfortable as he nodded for me to follow him, sputtering nonsense about how it was good to meet me and he could barely see the resemblance between me and my father. The words blurred together as I walked, swallowed by the gym. Eyes began turning to me as the raven-haired boy shouted for their attention and then suddenly I was standing in front of all of them.
“Let’s start with some introductions,” The man said, pointing to himself first with a grin. “I’m Kuroo Tetsurou, nice to meet you.”
Then he went down the line, “That’s Nobuyuki Kai, our vice captain. Then there’s Morisuke Yaku, Taketora Yamamoto, Kenma Kozume, Shohei Fukunaga, So Inuoka, Tamahiko Teshiro, Lev Haiba and Yuki Shibayama!”
In unison, they all bowed and welcomed me in. I should have felt glad, maybe happy that they all gave off some sense of warmth, but I had only felt… envious. They all smiled, some little, some wide. They were all receptive and curious. I had only realised that it was my turn to introduce myself when no one said anything afterwards, staring and waiting for a response.
“I’m Izumi Nekomata, nice to meet you all.” I said bluntly, bowing in response.
Kuroo chuckled awkwardly and scratched the back of his neck when another moment passed with nothing being said. He cleared his throat and gently patted my shoulder. “Right! So, I’ve already got them started on some practice receives, do you want to tell us a little about you and what position you play?”
“Yeah, let’s make sure you’re actually Nekomata’s daughter,” The brown haired boy, Inuoka, said with a joking grin.
I brushed off his joke with a thin smile and shook my head too quickly for my liking, cringing when Kuroo raised a suspicious brow. “No, sorry, let’s just get started with some spikes and I’ll give pointers as we go.”
Kuroo puffed out his lips and nodded, his tone dulled as he asked everyone to begin lining up by the court. I sighed once more, finding my place beside the pole and regaining my balance as I leaned against it. The door to the gym was just ahead of me. A couple steps to freedom. But I couldn’t go.
So I stayed, I stayed and I absolutely hated it here.

2.3 ㅡ STARRY NIGHT.
warnings: slight angst, crying hajime.
you woke up in the middle of the night, and you felt like you were freezing to death. you rubbed your eyes tiredly and glanced at the illuminated green numbers on the digital clock. it was only 2:24 am. you groaned in dismay as you put your blanket on top of you, attempting to sleep since you have classes tomorrow. you heard a strong gust of wind blowing against your window, and this irritated you even more. you're too lazy to close the curtains, but you didn't like the sound of the wind either - you let out a frustrated sigh as you wore your white fluffy house shoes, and walked towards your window. your eyes landed on a certain figure, who was standing on the roadside as he looked at the night sky with an emotionless expression.
you squinted your eyes and tried to see it clearly, and you're shocked that iwaizumi hajime was standing outside his house at 2:30 am, wearing only his sweater and sweatpants, he warmed his shivering hands by rubbing them; fatigue engraved on his worn face.
...
"...what the heck, something is not right."
                                                                2009, October 11.
"(y/n)-chan, hanami-chan! let's go to the volleyball gym to see them practice!" akane whined as she hugged us from behind, and stomped her foot like a child that wasn't getting what they wanted. you sighed as you turned around to hanami, the girl crossed her arms over her chest, still contemplating whether she should accompany her friend or just go back home and sleep. without a second thought, she then took her school backpack and faced akane, giving her a cheeky grin before she left the classroom.
"b-but please..." she grabbed her wrist, begging her to stay.
"if (y/n) is staying then i will be staying, too."
even though you have better things to do at home, you just couldn't say no to your friends. and plus, you wanted to check up on iwaizumi. your brow furrowed as you rubbed your temples, recalling the moment last night; it wasn't a dream. you thought it was you who was hallucinating, it was midnight after all - but when you looked at him from afar, it was him, iwaizumi hajime was standing there, it's like he was counting stars or something. it was awfully cold yesterday and nobody will just go out without a scarf like that, the more you think about it; the more you think that iwaizumi hajime was hiding something, and it makes you suspicious. akane and hanami were throwing insults at each other again, you couldn't care less about it; as you're trying to analyse about the situation last night.
the familiar low thudding sound echoed through the volleyball court, twelve people were playing volleyball at the center of the gym, six in green uniforms versus six in blue. there were a lot of girls sitting on the floor, cheering and screaming their names. akane squealed and grabbed both of your hands - as she grinned widely, and sat on the floor. hanami and you exchanged glances and let out a sigh. akane gets excited easily especially when she sees someone attractive. she couldn't stop talking about them and this girl won't hesitate to take pictures of them and make it as her collection. frankly, you're not like the other girls, or like akane. you've passed that phase long ago, and it was not a big deal when you're talking to one of the hot guys in school, you just...don't care, and you're focusing more on yourself and many other things that you think it's important.
the girls were screaming again when it was time for oikawa to serve.
"oikawa san! you are the best!"
"he's so handsome! look at him-"
hanami rolled her eyes and turned away, you could clearly see that she was frustrated and annoyed at the same time, she was fuming; and you thought that her ears were in danger of turning into smokestacks. you didn't understand why she was acting in this way, and you tried many ways to comfort her, but to no avail; she was still pissed. akane was smiling dreamingly when matsukawa blocked one of his opponents, she quickly waved at him when he was looking towards her direction.
he just nodded.
"i think he likes me." akane squeezed your wrist and let out a giggle. you laughed at her optimistic behaviour, she was always that cheerful and energetic, she's that kind of friend that you can actually rely on, she was always positive; which you liked her a lot. hanami, on the other hand, was really rational. she hates it when akane asks her about love relationships, basically everything about love, she said that it was a waste of time. hanami was neutral, and her personality was really straightforward, brutally honest about her own opinions and her feelings; and very stubborn. you loved them, you loved all of them, you loved it when they always attacked you with hugs, it was something that you never experienced before, and yet you're given another chance to feel alive again.
"nice one, iwaizumi!" one of the seniors ruffled his hair, and he just smiled in response. this was strange, iwaizumi would normally exchange high fives with all of them. he took a deep breath, then using a blue towel to wipe off his sweats. you're starting to worry about him, he had never been absent-minded before, and the dark circles under his eyes were so obvious.
suddenly, a ball flew towards your direction and hanami stood up and dodged it just in time. iwaizumi yelled at oikawa, and oikawa screamed, their seniors tried to calm everyone down, the fan girls - once again, were shouting and yelling at each other, and the scene was really, chaotic.
what's worse? the coach was nowhere to be seen.
"trashykawa!"
"stop calling me that!" he pouted angrily.
"you almost hit them! you gotta be focus-" iwaizumi retorted.
"i-it's not my fault when hana-chan is looking at me! it's dis-distracting!" the brunette blurted out, and he immediately covered his mouth. everyone was dumbfounded, and oikawa was blushing heavily as he looked at hanami, the girl clicked her tongue and rolled her eyes, a blush spreading across her face. her eyes - her eyes were filled in embarrassment, her hands rubbing on her skirt, hanami had never gotten into this situation before; and oikawa was basically getting into her nerves. a tiny furrow appeared on your head, this exact moment was definitely too cliche for you; typical high school love and puppy love romance, which you've experienced many years ago, witnessing this entire scene again made you shivered slightly.
no, you didn't feel excited at all.
"uhm...i'm too old for this..." you mumbled slightly, rubbing both of your arms, trying to rid yourself from goosebumps.
just then, hanami cracked her knuckles and yelled at oikawa; "fuck you, oikawa! go get your eyes checked!"
───
iwaizumi walked back home without telling you.
after the practice match was over, oikawa dragged you outside the court and ranted at you about hanami, his love relationships and begging for advice, and frankly, you really wanted to excuse yourself and find iwaizumi, but the brunette was whining and complaining about his problems; which you have no choice but to listen to him. you found oikawa somewhat amusing, even though he was always up to no good, very cunning and an absolute prick, but oikawa was actually not a bad person; it's just sometimes - he didn't know how to express his emotions.
"i hate autumn, it makes me all gloomy and sad." - oikawa.
you sighed, putting your hands in your blazer pocket while walking back home. you agreed to his statement, autumn made you feel lonely and depressed, the falling leaves and bare trees - and the atmosphere was totally different compared to summer and spring. the colours were less vibrant, and it was not as refreshing as these two seasons - when you saw flowers blooming and beautiful grasslands, smelling the pine trees as the warm sun drew out their fragrance, you felt happier; it makes you feel at ease. summer and spring give off lighthearted vibes, and you also believed that warm seasons made your mind rest and become refreshed.
in contrast, autumn is a bittersweet season.
it reminds you of both teenagers falling in love when they first met each other, walking among the flower fields, watching the sunset on the beach, and laughter and chatter fill the air - when the weather starts to get colder, it all felt like a daydream, flowers stopped blooming, leaves falling, the once vibrant colours turned dull and monochromatic, only reddish, orange and brown, they said spring and summer is a season of cliches; you could hear birds singing and bee buzzing, it's love in the air - when it comes to autumn, then it's not the case. it's a repetitive cycle, autumn means ever-approaching endings, a threat of frost creeping in anytime, heartbreaking events, romantic love fades away and forms a bittersweet memory that can only be kept inside your heart.
you dislike autumn.
a crunching sound could be heard when you're stepping on these dry leaves, you frowned as you kicked away some of the branches along the pathway, you're worried about him, and you knew that something was up when he just ditched you and didn't inform you that he'll be leaving the court first, which made you feel anxious. "autumn is definitely a stupid season." you mumbled.
you passed by a big field, and you saw iwaizumi hajime sitting on a bench.
you let out a long sigh, slowly approaching him and put your bag beside him, you crossed your arms over your chest and eyed him curiously. "oi, what is wrong...with you..." your voice trailed off when you saw his puffy red cheeks and swollen eyes, he quickly stood up and avoided eye contact with you, iwaizumi hajime didn't expect that - absolutely not expecting that you're here, he felt ashamed, and you wouldn't expect that he had fallen to such a state. "what are you doing here?" he spoke in a harsh tone, grabbing his backpack and trying to leave, you quickly pulled his arm and dragged him to sit beside you.
"you're so stubborn, tell me about it."
"i have nothing to say."
"bullshit. i saw you standing outside your house yesterday at 2 am," you spat.
"you what?!" iwaizumi was surprised, looking at you in disbelief. "how did you know -" you interrupted him while he was speaking, "iwaizumi hajime, i'm serious here, i'm worried about you, what happened? you know you can always talk to me." you said, hugging your backpack and waiting for him to speak. he sighed, and took a deep breath, "my parents want a divorce, some sort of thing...then...uh...it makes me overwhelmed?...ah, forget it, i don't speak to anyone about this..."
iwaizumi hajime hates himself for being weak.
"oh, so you think that pushing your feelings away will sort out your problems? do you think acting strong is the best way to overcome your issues? we all are humans, crying is just an expression, there's nothing wrong with it, you know?" you grabbed his wrist gently and continued, "you said it makes you overwhelmed, and that's fine. it's understandable, you shouldn't keep everything to yourself, showing your weakness doesn't define you, iwaizumi." he bit his lip harshly, in a weak attempt to stop his tears flowing out from his eyes, though he tried, the stored tears continued to flow and the sobs wracked his body, robbing it of the ability to speak. iwaizumi was strong, he was tough, your heart aches when he was breaking down right in front of you, to think that he's been going through a lot of problems by himself makes you want to stay by his side.
when you looked up to the night sky, the stars were glowing brightly, each one was more of a golden yellow orb, and it was different from the stars that you've usually seen for the past few weeks, which their colours were slightly misty and white; a typical autumn night. but today was different, the moon was shining in the middle of blazing stars, definitely a picturesque view. you turned around and looked at him, he closed his eyes, a rattled sigh passing through his parted lips as he did so.
it was a cold autumn night.
"i'm sorry," he spoke softly.
"for what?"
"uh...i didn't wait for you today because i saw you're talking to oikawa, i didn't want to bother you." you let out a laugh, and then you put your hand over your mouth as you found it hilarious and adorable. iwaizumi frowned and pouted angrily, his ears were completely red due to embarrassment.
"i'm serious, i'm sorry."
"it's fine, iwa-chan, please don't ditch me again, i feel lonely," you replied, mimicking oikawa's tone. he smiled, shaking his head, "you are so annoying."
maybe you're older than iwaizumi, maybe you have experienced many shitty things throughout your teenage years, and maybe you have an abusive family that makes you sympathize with those people who're experiencing the same thing as you - more specifically, family issues. when you looked at iwaizumi again, he looked exhausted. you knew exactly how he felt, you knew that it was hard to deal with these things alone, the more you thought about it, you began to feel depressed.
and that's what you feel about autumn; a series of heartbreaking events.
"let's walk back home together," he said.
when he stood up, you pulled iwaizumi into a tight embrace.
"...i'm always here for you."
