“From now on, she’ll know how much practicing and sheer will she’s got in her to say ‘I can do as well. I can be better. I’m the best.’ Only in this case can she become a success. Nobody told me that.” (Possession 1981, dir. Andrzej Zulawski)

Tom in a way is his own antagonist & suffers the consequences of it. Allow me to explain: “500 days of Summer” in a way is the destruction of the MPDG trope, it’s a warning against the idea of romanticizing women into the objects which we desire them to be. Tom is in love with the idea of Summer and he almost doesn’t see the humanity within her (because he is only seeing her through his own lens) . He refuses to accept that she is her own complex person. Director Marc Webb states that: “yes, Summer has elements of the MPDG- she is a immature view of a women. She’s Tom’s view of a women. He doesn’t see her complexity & the consequence for him is heartbreak. In Tom’s eyes, Summer is perfection, but perfection has no depth. Summer’s not a girl, she’s a phase.”
