Misunderstanding
I received a note from someone who was upset I “failed to cite Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics” in my research for my work on Neil Gaiman's Chivalry and the essays I wrote about it.
I really appreciate that people want to make sure credit goes where it's due, and I have a lot of respect for Scott McCloud's accomplishment with his wonderful book.
I haven't read it myself in some years, and didn't cite it in my articles because I didn't reference it. I don't even know where my copy is so I don't know what McCloud referenced, either.
The information in my articles re: illuminated manuscripts and the Bayeux Tapestry, as well as other theories about the development of sequential art from prehistory, not only predate McCloud's work (and in fact, predate McCloud's birth,) but they are so common and so well known in comics circles that asking me to cite them seems as weird to me as asking me to cite the information that George Washington was the first President of the United States.
A part of me wonders if someone is trying to play, "Let's you and him fight."
No.
But I’m happy to bring to your attention some reading material.
Stephen Becker in his 1959 work Comic Art in America: A Social History of the Funnies, the Political Cartoons, Magazine Humor, Sporting Cartoons, and Animated Cartoons was among the first to discuss the Bayeux Tapestry as comic art. I read that book sometime in the 1980’s. I think a lot of people assume the Bayeux tapestry as comic art was McCloud’s idea, but we don’t all walk around with a reference library in our heads, so there you go. I can’t find my copy of Becker’s work to quote, but I did find an article by Arthur Asa Berger with a mention of the Bayeux Tapestry as comic art in the summer 1978 issue of The Wilson Quarterly.
My first exposure to the idea of comics as descendant of fine art was Maurice Horn’s 1976 The World Encyclopedia of Comics which was my first read re: comics history. I still have my tattered 1976 edition.
While Horn scorned the idea that tapestries and manuscripts could be comic art (see, it was a matter of discussion way back then, so much so that authors were writing snarky asides to one another about it,) he believed the origin of sequential art was in the Renaissance sketches of Leonardo da Vinci - which I think everyone now agrees is kind of a bonkers idea.
I think Horn was just intent on elevating the comic art form by hooking up with da Vinci.

Comics as descendant of art on scrolls is a very common theory, the easiest to trace being in Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics by Fred Schodt published in 1983 when I was still a teenager. I can't find my copy to show examples, but this text is still in print and you can go read it for yourself.
I was introduced to manga by cartoonist Leslie Sternbergh and bought Schodt’s book at Books Kinokuniya on (I think) a trip to New York around the time of first publication of Schodt’s work. And years later took a trip to Japan with Fred Schodt and a group of cartoonists including Jeff Smith and Jules Fieffer, Nicole Hollander, and Denys Cowan as the guests of Tezuka Productions.
Here we all are.
So, I’m familiar with manga, see.
As for comics as descendant of cave paintings, hieroglyphics and ancient art in general, Will Eisner’s 1985 Comics and Sequential Art not only made all of those points, but made those points with comic art examples. Like these.

And more than a few words on this:
I find it amusing that someone is questioning why I didn’t cite McCloud when what you should probably be questioning is why more people don’t cite Eisner who produced his book eight years before McCloud published his and who is well known to have influenced McCloud.

I also danced with Eisner. Eat your heart out.
Understanding Comics is a terrific work with huge advantages over every book (that I know of) about comics that came before: it taught comics entirely in the language of comics.
But the discussion in it about the origins of comics and my work especially re: illuminated manuscripts/tapestries, did not originate with McCloud. I research illuminated manuscripts because it’s my hobby and it informs my art.
I encourage everyone to read Understanding Comics because it is an outstanding work.
But it’s not the book that introduced me to the concepts of the development of comic art. It’s not even the point of origin of those concepts. So, there is no reason to cite it.
Also, shocking as it may seem, I occasionally come up with ideas on my own. While I'm younger than McCloud, I've actually been a comics pro longer than he has. So I've had plenty of opportunity to, you know, read things and toss things around, and decide for myself.
When I first read Chivalry and first begged Neil Gaiman to let me adapt it, my head full of the work of Alberto Sangorski and his art for Tennyson’s Le Morte D’Arthur, Understanding Comics hadn’t been published yet.
It's been a good twelve years since I last read McCloud's work, and I don't think I've spoken to him five times in the last three decades. But I'm pretty sure he never mentioned Sangorski.
I hope that clears everything up, and maybe introduces some of you to some works you might not be aware of.

Favorite place in the world you've visited?
I loved visiting Belgium with my dad last October. It was a really special trip we shared together seeing where Easy Company were during the Battle of the Bulge and we shared some really special memories together.
Something you're proud of yourself for?
Getting through everyday. Since Christmas it’s been pretty tough between work and final exams and it’s been super stressful. Luckily I have some really supportive friends. Honestly I’m just glad I got through the last month and that I’m getting through February.

This was a tough one but I do love how much history Britain has. There are so many historical places from all different time periods and there are also lots of events held to celebrate/commemorate historical events.
When did you join the HBO War fandom? What was the first show you watched?
So I first watched Band of Brothers in about 2014/2015 roughly. I then watched the Pacific about two years after that. Then Gen Kill last year. I didn’t join the hbowar fandom on tumblr until last year though.
Have you read any of Easy Company's books? If so, which ones were your favorite?
I’ve read so many of them 😂 my favourite is David Websters Parachute Infantry. I know I’ve spoken about it before but he has such a way with words and describing the scenes, as well as his fellow paratroopers.
Favorite HBO War character and your favorite moment with them?
It’s gotta be my baby boy Gene Roe. I love him so much. One of my favourite scenes with him is in Bastogne when he talks to Renée outside the aid station.
My other favourite scene is when he does the whole ‘you’re officers, you’re grownups, you outta know’. That’s probably one of my favourite scenes.
Do you make content for any fandoms, if so; what sort of content?
I write fics and I make moodboards/ edits.
Favorite actor/actress and your favorite film of theirs?
I don’t really have one specific favourite actor or actress to be honest, there are lots I like and lots of movie I like.

Just Some Guy (2/9)
Notes: Welcome back to Matty's second year at Watford! This year, he and John will meet some new friends and I am happy to introduce them to you. They were all named by @raenestee. Thank you Raen!

It’s time for another year at Watford and I already miss the summer. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind being at Watford, but I am not looking forward to classes, especially Greek.
At least John is here. He couldn’t hang out during the summer due to ‘not existing outside the main story beats’ or something. He said he’d look into it for next summer.
Look, I like John. He’s probably my best mate at the moment, but that’s because he’s my only mate. I don’t mind. I’ve met loads of people last year, but we never became friends. Now it’s time to change that. This is going to be my year!
Sports might not be it for me, though, but according to John there is a Watford Chess Club.
“I’m joining,” he says one day, “You should come along.”
“I don’t know how to play chess,” I say, “I didn’t even know you played chess.”
John shrugs.
“Learnt it over the summer ‘off-screen’,” he uses air quotes when he says that last word. I have no clue what he means. “I can teach you. Come on, it’ll be fun!”
To everyone’s surprise, I am amazing at chess. John teaches me all his tricks but after a week at chess club, I surpass him. Chess club is huge. It’s actually quite nice to be part of something. I recognise some other members from our year. We hang out at chess club, but also outside of it.
Friends. What a concept. I had friends before Watford, but living at an exclusive boarding school does put a damper on those friendships. I saw my mates during the summer, but it’s different.
We’re sitting on the Great Lawn, eating crisps and drinking soda.
“Did you all see Agatha Wellbelove at lacrosse?” Arnold says.
“Don’t start,” John says, “You have no chance.”
“No one does,” I grumble. I admit I like looking at Agatha Wellbelove too. I think every guy in our year does, except Ryan, who is gay.
As a result, Ryan rolls his eyes in an exaggerated way.
“Please, let the poor girl live!”
“That’s because you have a little crush on the Chosen One!” Leslie teases.
“I do not!” Ryan sputters back.
Scott, his roommate, snorts. “Sure, mate.”
“You did seem to be interested during Magic Words,” Sam adds.
“Well, that’s because he was fighting that Pitch guy again!” Ryan says. He has a point. The Chosen One seems to have an ongoing rivalry with the Pitch Heir.
Politics, amirite?
Others agree with Ryan as well. You cannot ignore the Chosen One. If he’s not out there leaking magic, he’s fighting our classmate Tyrannus, or he’s doing some weird shit. The other day, the Humdrum sent counting sheep. I luckily wasn’t affected, but John was. The Chosen One broke the spell on his friend and Agatha Wellbelove and for some reason that broke the entire spell.
I’m glad he saved John, but apart from that, I do not really keep track of the Chosen One’s antics. That’s what I tell my friends when Sam asks me for my opinion on him.
“Honestly, I agree,” Luis says with a shrug, “Simon Snow can do all that saviour stuff. I just want to pass the upcoming Magickal History exam.”
I almost choke on a crisp.
Shit. I completely forgot about it.

“Aren’t we breaking the rules?” I whisper to John. The two of us are roaming the grounds past midnight.
“It’s common decency to stay in the dorms after a certain hour,” John answers with a mischievous grin, “But there is no hard rule. Look.”
He holds out his lantern in a certain direction and I see more people sneaking around. I wonder if we’re going to a party or something. John was very vague, or more vague than usual. He just insisted that we had to go outside.
“John, where are we going?”
“Shhhh,” John stops abruptly and he pushes me behind him. I look over his shoulder and I see the Chosen One. He looks like he’s been crying and he’s walking towards Mummers House.
“Do you think he’s okay?” I ask. Unlike Ryan, I do not really pay attention to the Chosen One outside of class, but he looks harrowed. It would be an asshole move to not worry about him.
John shrugs, which is odd. He’s usually so in tune with everyone.
“I think he’s going through some shit,” John answers.
“What could he be going through?” I ask, “He’s our hero.”
John raises an eyebrow, as if I said something stupid.
“He’s still a boy, Matt. I think he’s realising that being the hero is not all fun and games.”
We watch the Chosen One walk away and he does look awful and beat up. John is right. He’s my age. I can’t imagine having the weight of the world on my shoulders and being a twelve year old at the same time.
The Chosen One.
Simon Snow.
Maybe I should stop referring to him by his title and start thinking of him by his name. We will never be friends. We pass each other in the corridor of our rooms and we know each other from classes, but that’s it. Because of that, he’s always been this elusive entity in my life. The Chosen One, the Saviour of the Magickal World, the Mage’s Heir and all that jazz.
But when I see him like this, cheeks wet from the tears, shoulders hunched, I am reminded that he’s just Simon Snow.
I heard that he’s chasing two snakes for the Mage. What kind of snakes must they be? Simon Snow really looks terrible.
When he enters the building, John and I snap out of weird concentration. We look at each other and I shrug.
John shrugs too.
What else can we do?
“Well, let’s keep going,” John says and he starts walking. Really, what else can we do? “The others are waiting.”
“What?”
That distracts me from my Simon Snow sadness.
John and I walk to the drawbridge. My friends from chess club are there as well. Luis is holding ice cream.
“Gentlemen, let’s indulge!” he says.
“What’s the occasion?” I ask.
“My twelfth birthday.”
My eyes widen, but it’s clear I’m not the only one who didn’t know this fact. Leslie throws her arms around him.
“Luis! Oh my God, congrats!”
Luis hands out his treats and the eight of us have an impromptu party. The Chosen One- I mean, Simon Snow is long forgotten. How can I care about him when I have my own life with great friends? I am so glad I joined chess club.

I did it!
Well, I had to bitch and moan for it, but I did it! I convinced my parents to gift me one of those fancy smartphones for my birthday. Now I can surf the internet on my phone and send memes to John in the summer. John looked into his situation and he says he exists in the summer as long as I keep messaging him, or whatever that means.
I’m just glad I have an easier way to talk to all my new friends.
Another year has gone by and we’re at our last breakfast for the school year. We’re sat relatively close to Simon Snow, and it’s noticeable. His magic is leaking, as usual, and he’s pushing scones down his throat, it’s almost grotesque. He’s eating as if he’s expecting to go hungry in summer.
Huh.
Where does he go during the summer? He’s famously an orphan. He has no family to go to. But then I see his chatty friend sit down next to him. I assume he’s going to her place in the summer.
I push any thoughts about Simon Snow out of my mind. I don’t have to see him for weeks.

It started when you finally convinced Agatha to watch the Office with you, a show you thought the witch would enjoy. Well…you were right. Lucky you. Everything was going fine until he said those four horrible words.

You’ve never hated any sentence more.
You were too into the show to see Agatha’s eyes light up as she found her new favorite phrase.
It had been a few days since you introduced the show to your girlfriend and you were starting to feel…stabby. It didn’t help that the pickle jar wouldn’t open and you wanted a snack.

“Oh my god it’s massive!” You yelled out, stumbling out of the shower to run to your girlfriend so she would kill the beast but then-

You didn’t even say anything this time, you were just chilling on the porch, enjoying the hot summer day by indulging in a popsicle. Agatha walked out with a glass of lemonade, prepared to sit by you on the porch swing when she saw you. She held back a laugh making you look at her. You took the popsicle out of your mouth and pointed at your girlfriend.
“Don’t you da-”
“That’s what she said!”
You glared at your girlfriend who seemed to be bubbling with joy. You pointedly took the popsicle back in your mouth and bit the tip off. Agatha choked on her glass of lemonade, looking at you with a faux offended expression.
“God, Y/N, that made me choke.”
At your girlfriends words, you sat up straight, your eyes lighting up with glee. Agatha started shaking her head.
“No, wait-”
“That’s what she said! Ha!”

The Girl in the White Dress
Sometimes I think I am going crazy.
Sometimes I think I have finally found what I have been searching for.
Every single night I close my eyes and dream of you. I don’t know who you are or where you come from, but I see your face and notice the way you smile every time you look at me from between the trees. I don’t need to know your name. You are my Girl in the White Dress and I’m just a man who fell in love with a dream.
Some nights we take a walk in the birch grove and even though it all happens in my head, I see the surroundings as vividly as if we were truly there. I can smell the flowers along the path. I feel the warmth of your hand in mine. I clearly remember every sensation, every word you say. You tell me about what makes you happy. I tell you about my oneirology research. You tell me about your days. I tell you about that perfect sunset I’ve seen once in Italy.
The scent of your perfume fills my lungs. Your face is so close to mine.
My damn alarm clock rings.
I open my eyes.
I’m alone again.

We are in the same grove again. This time it is filled with cypress trees instead of birches.
The sun hangs high in the sky; you wink and blow me a kiss.
“You are beautiful,” I say, unable to take my eyes off you even for a second.
“Try to catch me,” you chuckle, gathering the flowing fabric of your skirt, and then you start running. Your silky hair billows behind you like the waves of Lake Como. Your bare feet barely touch the ground.
I follow you as fast as I can, noticing how the trees give way to a meadow, a stone path, and then to a building that looks like a palace straight from the postcards one sometimes receives from southern Europe. I don’t remember this place, but it feels familiar. Have I been here before? Have you?
I catch you by the ornate metal gate, pull you into my arms and taste the laughter on your lips. You throw your hands around my neck. Do you feel how well your body fits against mine?
Bliss.
You lead me through lengthy corridors decorated with countless paintings and sculptures. It is clear that you know where we are going even if I do not. We enter a bedroom with a four-poster bed standing in the middle. The bedsheets are as white as your dress. While we kiss, I free you from the layers of its soft fabric and then carry you to the bed. My lips explore your body. So titillating. So sweet. So real. All mine to cherish. My fingers follow every single of your lovely curves, covering every single mound and hollow. I can’t get enough of you and your little moans. When I burrow myself deep inside you, the world ceases to exist. We let our passion consume us again and again, until the sun sets and then rises again. You whisper my name. I’m drunk with you and I don’t want to sober up. Ever.
I don’t want to wake up.
My alarm clock mocks me with its ringing.

“I feel like everyone has abandoned me,” you say, sitting on the low stone wall that faces the lake. The sun is setting. Its golden light reflects in the tears that shine in your eyes.
I scoop you into my lap and wrap my arms around you. Your cheeks taste like seawater. The wind plays with your hair. You whisper your sorrows into my ear. I hold you tight until your sobs subside. I know all will be well in the end.
“You are not a dream, are you, Scott?” you tilt your head.
“I am as real as you are,” I admit. I have been waiting for you to ask me this question for a while now.
“I want to see you. But not in a dream,” you say. “Tell me how I can find you. Please?”
This is when I brush a stray strand of your hair out of your face and make a promise, “I will be the one who finds you, love.”
When I say these words, I look into your mesmerizing eyes. What is their color?

Noddy you’re insane. But I also like a challenge. Here’s most of them.
1. What were your summers like as a kid? My grandma and grandpa lived right next door, they took care of us while my parents had to work. In the summer, I usually just played pretend outside with my two cousins and sister that also lived next door on the other side of us.
2. Do you enjoy thrilling rides like rollercoasters? Yes!
3. Who was your childhood hero? I looked up to the creators of atla a lot!
4. What is your favorite book? Probably still Behemoth, the second book in the Leviathan series by Scott Westerfeld
6. What is your favorite outfit? Probably my cherry blossom tee with a pink skirt. Comfy and cute.
7. Does seeing people in love make you happy? Sad? Annoyed? Annoyed and jealous, if I’m being honest. I wish I could feel that way. At least as naturally as other people.
12. Iced drinks or hot drinks? Iced drinks. My favorite drinks are iced coffee and iced tea.
13. Bright colors or neutral tones? Hmm. Probably neutral. I’m a big fan of pastels, if that counts.
16. What’s your favorite feature of yours? As much as I complain, probably my squinty eyes. My Dad and Grandpa both have them too and I like that I inherited that feature from them. I think it’s endearing that our eyes disappear when we smile, lol.
21. What’s the stupidest fight you’ve ever gotten into? I remember arguing with a cousin over the phone when I was little on if it’s okay to run a red light if no one else is at the intersection. I insisted it was because my grandpa told me it was. She valiantly disagreed. That phone call lasted forever XD
23. What's your dream date? I don’t know. Maybe a movie or car ride so I don’t have to make eye contact LMAO
25. Do you like parties? Nope. Too loud.
26. Did you enjoy high school? Somehow, yes. I liked band and during lunch I got a break from everyone by eating lunch in a teacher’s room.
27. Who is the craziest person in your family and why? Pfft. Dear lord. Just one? My family has issues. Gonna skip over the mental illnesses and addictions and interpret this lightheartedly. My bisexual??? aunt is the life of any party. She can make friends anywhere. She lies all the time, over the dumbest things too. She is so fucking funny and problematic and I love her.
28. What's your favorite holiday tradition? 4th of July. My grandpa hosts the best party in the area at his house. My uncle and dad are usually the ones that organize it. Along with the help of most other family members who cook, clean, set up, etc. A lot of people come out and we eat barbecue, play games, light sprinklers, and watch the fireworks show.
31. What's a show that everyone loves that you didn't? Survivor. It’s so boring to me.
35. Who are your top 5 celebrity crushes? Only one I can think of is Robert Sheehan. I love his hair.
36. If you could learn one language fluently what would it be? Ugh this is hard. The weeb in me says Japanese. The “language I’ve studied but am not great at” in me says Chinese. And the practicality in me says Spanish.
44. Do you have a favorite quote? “And the universe said I love you because you are love” and “despite everything, it’s still you.”
47. Biggest pet peeve? Someone demanding me to do a task without 1. prior notice and/or 2. me even agreeing to it

87. What was your childhood dream? I wanted to be a counselor to do better for the mentally ill kids like me than any of the “professionals” that handled me did when I was at my worst
89. What's one thing you want to achieve this year? Get a job that doesn’t make me burn out (impossible challenge)
93. What's your craziest work related story? One time a kid bit me on my boob really hard and left a bruise for weeks. One time another kid bit my finger and made it bleed so hard I had to go to the urgent care. One time one of our kids somehow spelled out the word ‘sexy ❤️’ by placing random letter stickers
94. What's the best job you've had so far? Being a carhop. It had a lot of downsides too but it is the only one I haven’t gotten fired/nearly fired from due to my autism swag yet LMAO
97. Are you more of a planner or a spontaneous adventurer? Planner, for sure
98. Do you think you see yourself the way other people see you? No. Depending on the context, most people would either see me as pretty wise and smart for some reason (friends) or the dumbest and most immature person you’ve ever had the displeasure of working with (coworkers). It seems like there’s never any middle ground. I’d like to think I’m in the middle of those extremes.

Emily loved how her name sounded when it rolled on his tongue. Like he tasted her in his mouth. He seemed to enjoy playing with words and the alluring, deep, husky voice made her tremble with anticipation. When he gently lowered himself over her and their fingers intertwined above her head, the soft mattress shifted. He used his weight to hold her down under him and when he rasped her name again, she smiled at the reaction of her own body. Her heart hammered in her chest and her skin became receptive to his touch. Heat filled her veins and she was ready to join with him in a moment of passion.
His voice suddenly changed and became colder. When he said her name again, it was without passion and it no longer felt like his lips brushed against her ear when he spoke. His hands felt dead and coarse around her wrists and Emily frowned. Something was not right. She opened her eyes and stared into a bright light and it completely blinded her. The heated body covering hers just seconds ago was gone and when she tried to raise her hand to shield her eyes from the merciless light, she could not move it. Her head felt dizzy, her thoughts slow and her mouth dry, but the realization hit her with full force despite her state. She was trapped. Thick restraints secured her wrists and ankles and in an attempt to free herself from them, she twisted and turned like a wild animal caught in a steel jaw trap. Panic erupted in her chest and she tried to scream but her body refused to cooperate.
”Emily, can you hear me?” The voice, which she would recognize among a thousand others, sounded closer to her again, and she felt a warm hand on her forearm. She blinked repeatedly in an attempt to get used to the strong light, and he must have seen her discomfort. The strong light suddenly faded and left the room significantly darker. In the dim light seeping from the opening in the door, Emily stared down at her body. She was dressed in familiar clothes, but she had no memory of putting them on. Around her waist was another belt, but even her confused mind understood that resistance was meaningless. Trying to calm her racing heart, she clenched her fists so hard her nails left deep marks in her palms,
”Emily?”
”Scott. You are here.” Emily managed to form a few words but felt exhausted. What was wrong with her? Even thinking a simple thought was difficult, like her brain was put under restraints as well. Her blood must be filled with sedatives, but she could not understand why. And Scott, why was–
”Yes, I am here,” he said in a neutral tone, interrupting her incoherent thoughts. ”Try to breathe as normal as you can. Nice and steady. You have been given something to calm you down and after that you have been asleep for almost twelve hours.”
Emily looked at Scott, and a warm feeling spread in her chest. She knew every detail of his handsome face by heart. His beautiful and incredibly expressive cerulean eyes and the thin lines around them, his prominent nose and, one of the most attractive things about his looks; the dark, soft beard which she could imagine herself carefully touching with her fingertips every time she closed her eyes. He wore a dark suit and a shirt with the collar open, and the smooth exposed skin attracted her gaze instantly.
”Do you know why you are here?”
She looked at him and blinked. She had a feeling something bad had happened, but she could not really remember what it was. Slowly, she shook her head, and the movement made her neck hurt, the sore muscles reminding her something about a fight.
”Emily,” Scott sounded more stern than she had ever heard him. ”You attacked Dr. Cooper last night, when she tried to talk to you. Do you remember that? You stabbed her in the shoulder with a knife. God knows where you got it.”
”I saw you with her, you kissed her.” Emily’s voice trembled. Hurtful memories rose to the surface of her consciousness and made her eyes tear up.
”Who?”
”Dr. Cooper.” The name fell from her lips as no more than a whisper.
”I have never kissed Dr. Cooper. Our relationship is strictly professional.”
”You are lying!”
”Emily, your mind can not separate what is real from the things you want to be real. That is why you are my patient in the first place, remember?”
”I love you, Scott.”
”I know you think you do, Emily.” He sighed. ”You need to stop calling me by my first name. It’s Dr. White as long as you are my patient. Do you understand?”
Emily closed her eyes, and a series of blurry images flashed in front of her eyes. Dr. Cooper’s superior smile, her tight white blouse stained with blood and Scott rushing to her aid. Emily remembered how slick the handle on the knife became when it was covered in blood.
”I did it for you… for us. So we could be together.”
”So you do remember what happened?”
Emily was battling against her drowsy mind but nodded slowly. Beside her, she could hear Scott take a deep breath, like he was trying to control his emotions. His deep voice sounded warmer as he patted her forearm. ”You should rest some more. I will come back to check on you later, ok?”
Unable to win against the heavy drugs in her system, Emily’s lids fell over her eyes like a curtain. She did not hear the door close and lock behind Dr. White as he left. It no longer mattered. She was already in his arms.
Scott’s lips met hers again and he kissed her tenderly. Their fingers were once again intertwined and she moaned longingly as he deepened the kiss. The soft hair on his chest was damp, and his heated body rubbed against hers when he settled deep between her thighs. His musky scent filled her senses and he drove her closer to relief with every thrust. His eyes gleamed with passion and need when she met his gaze.
”I love you, Scott.”
”My heart belongs to you, Emily.”

Tennessee’s DOPE SKUM Drops 4/20 EP ‘Gutter South’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~

We once again greet DOPE SKUM in the heat of summer, the chicada's growl prefacing the rough 'n' tumble Chattanooga trio's "Folk Magic," which starts the new EP, 'Gutter South' (2023).
The band's previous EP (reviewed here) introduced us to the band's vibrant, humid, and grimacing brand of stoner-doom. Now Dope Skum doubles down on dank with five more songs. We gave you a listen and talked at length about the opening track, which was revealed as a single back in November (read review).
A banjo and guitar interlude separates it from the tracks that follow. The deep south and religion going hand in hand, it was not entirely surprising to hear a voice-over quoting Jesus Christ's fiery words of doom and wonder from the Gospel of Mark. This song serves not only as interlude, but prelude to the damning "Feast of Snakes" which follows and further elucidates the sentiment, inviting listeners to "kill your ego." "Belly Lint" is a lumbering sludge beast, of the same ilk as Bongzilla and Weedeater, while final number "The Cycle" hurries the pace with swampy doom meets jazz-punk and quasi-tribal undertones.

SOME BUZZ
Chattanooga sludge band, Dope Skum, is back with their highly anticipated sophomore EP, Gutter South, set to release on April 21, 2023. The five-track album showcases the band’s evolution, highlighting a shift in direction and sound. This release is bound to take their followers and fans of the sludge, grunge, and stoner metal genres on a trip down south with its fuzz-laden, groove-oriented, heavy, yet dynamic songs.
Written with a new line-up featuring Cody Landress-Gibson (guitar/vocals) and Scott Keil (drums), Gutter South builds on Dope Skum’s solid foundation, staying true to their roots while offering a fresh perspective on their sound. The EP’s first single, “Folk Magic,” was released in November 2022, paying homage to Appalachian tradition and granny witches, folk healers known in the mountains to cure ailments with herbalism and home remedies.
The single received praise from several heavy music-oriented blogs, including Doomed & Stoned, Sleeping Village, and Outlaws of The Sun. The second single, “Belly Lint,” to be released on March 10, 2023, takes a different approach, tackling addiction and the resilience of the human spirit.
Gutter South is a testament to Dope Skum’s growth and versatility. With a unique blend of old-time influences, as seen in the interlude track, and heavy sludge, the EP marks a significant milestone in the band’s journey. While holding on to and acknowledging their roots in their debut EP Tanasi, Gutter South captures a fresh new spin on their sound and brand of sludge. Gutter South is the next chapter of Dope Skum.
