·˚  HEADCANON: APPEARANCE.
Tumblr media
this is a quick roundup of headcanons that focus primarily on tingyun's appearance. tidbits of headcanons on foxians as a whole will be sprinkled in here as well but i have plans to write a foxian worldbuilding meta to lay out all canonical details of their race + society and add onto what we know with my own inferences.
canonical, but worth mentioning since this is a running theme throughout these headcanons: a large interest of her's is cosmetics. her interest began from a place of self care and confidence building and eventually evolved into another tool in her area of work.
tingyun was born the equivalent of a runt by foxian standards, so she's a bit smaller than the majority of foxians her age. the real life fox breed i'd equate her appearance to would be a fennec fox due to how MASSIVE her ears and tail are in comparison to everybody else, even yukong.
tingyun maintains a simple aesthetic throughout her wardrobe and makeup choices. her everyday clothing fits the trends of the xianzhou and she tends to lean into warm neutrals like brown and off whites. red is her usual accent color (but she's picky about what type of red she wears), and her metal preference in any accessories is gold.
the only outlier in her color palette is her jade abacus- while being extremely important in foxian culture and essentially being a type of smart watch, it also never gets taken off. it is intentionally small enough to never come off of her wrist unless it is broken, similar to the real life practice of wearing jade bracelets.
scent preference time ! tingyun has a variety of perfumes that have become essentially decor on her vanity because she always sticks to the same scent profile. she likes light florals with hints of citrus and water. her soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, etc. is all coordinated with similar scent profiles. she's the type of person that walks by and you turn your head like damn who smells so good??
she takes care of her health and appearance as a whole, but there's a heavy focus on her hair and fur- tail in particular. a big source of insecurity in her youth was in her appearance and that was largely equated to how large and fluffy her ears and tail are. it sounds silly, but foxian culture has largely been war based so looking as unthreatening as she does- along with her inherently passive nature- makes her a prime target for scrutiny. her pride in how meticulously she takes care of her hair & fur is largely in part to her trying to embrace what she can't change. she is very consistent with washing, conditioning, brushing, & maintaining it. the hair on her head and tail are treated almost exactly the same so they are both very soft.
smaller note on her hair- she has the tips of her hair and tail dyed a subtle, darker red. it is not natural and she redyes it every month or two.
i'll expand on this in a biology specific headcanon, but tingyun has all of the standard (...in my canon) features of a foxian including fox ears, a tail, sturdy & semi-retractable claws, longer canines & incisors (& overall sharper teeth), a longer & flatter tongue, and a naturally darker pigmentation around her eyes.
as for her claws, they grow quicker than human nails and they're on the thicker side. they naturally grow sharp, but she manicures them regularly and files them into more of an almond shape. they're usually a light, translucent nude-pink. she does it herself in her down time during her self assigned "self care days."
when visiting other planets for her work as a trade amicassador, tingyun will do her research to be familiar with their fashion standards and dress to match as best she can. if there is not enough information on this before she arrives, she will take time to people watch and mimick from there. her intentions are not to blend in or pretend to be one of them, but to show from the beginning that she is here to talk things through and respect their culture. as somebody who avoids conflict to the point of not having a weapon on her, i imagine her voyages are meticulously planned down to these little details. it is worth noting that during formal events or meetings, she will sometimes opt for xianzhou's fashion to show that she is representing them.

Hiya! Hope this message finds u well :3 I absolutely love your art; found you from insta! Quick question also; I’m not sure if you’ve answered this before, but which brushes do you use for ur digital art? I love the textures they’re so crunchy (endearing)!! Have a lovely day!! :D
hello!! here's a little brush tour ft. this half rendered martin.
also, a great app for ipad artists who really want to dig into texture is art set 4. i swear by it and i've been using it for about two years. none of my more recent art uses it, but that's just because i'm experimenting with my process rn
Tumblr media
so here's a list of my most used brushes lately, and there will be links to all of them at the bottom of this post.
the two labeled "custom pencil" are both my own personal modified pencils (both sourced from the 6b pencil) but the narinder pencil and the vanilla 6b pencil are both very similar to them. i use these two for sketching and flat color specifically, and if you do specifically want these two brushes then i'd be happy to upload them somewhere for you to download, but they're not really necessary for texture
i also use G&B halftone brushes sometimes! but i greatly prefer the RSCO sample pack, and i cannot find the link to the G&B brushes no matter how hard i google, and pretty much any halftone brush set will do the same job
Tumblr media
and here's what they look like in practice!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(i like to set these halftones to color burn. color burn is my most used blending mode, even for shading)
and then i hit "copy all," paste, and duplicate it. so you should have two layers of just your entire canvas. then import a paper texture
i'm partial to the set i'll link down below, my favorite is #5. you should absolutely check out the rest of the free texture packs on their website if you're wanting to diversify your texture process btw, all of their stuff is fantastic.
to use that texture, your layers should look like this!
Tumblr media
on the layer set to the linear burn, i also like to go into the adjustments menu and bump up the brightness until all of the colors are at similar values to what they were before. and the normal layer on top is just to control the intensity/opacity of the paper texture!
after all of that, sometimes i'll go in with brushes like MM rake follow, or more from COFE's weird pencils, on top of all of those layers for finishing touches.
definitely play around with it, try new free brushes all of the time (i heavily recommended subscribing to Manero. they have a lot of free stuff and it's all fantastic) and see what works for you <3
here are the links to the brushes in this post, as well as some extras! some of them are paid and some of them are completely free. + it wasn't mentioned here, but i use the tatyworks linen fabric brush for blending! for any of the paid brushes, i'll try to link some free alternatives

Estera Ch 6 - Safe
(Prologue, Ch 1, Ch 2, Ch 3, Ch 4, Ch 5)
(Sofasurf’s Recrudescence which is the foundation for all of this)
Scott’s fled for the skies. Estera needs to find someone’s inhaler. But what happens next?
Well. Some details follow.
My usual blend of fluff and “Yikes”…
Confession - this got a teeny bit dark in the last section. If you want to stop reading at the end of the fluffy bit (you’ll know it when you see it) then there is zero judgment from me. I even make myself go “Yikes” with that one…
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
The authorities had called her a cab home, the hired coach having been sent away when all the parents arrived in person to collect their children. Although she had protested at the expense - surely there was a bus route somewhere nearby - she hadn’t had the energy to argue.
Thus she sat alone in the back seat trying to collect her thoughts. They resisted collection in a way that made cat herding look like a relaxing past time. So she fidgeted, putting on her cardigan then removing it again, retying her hair, rearranging the contents of her rucksack. Which she’d already done ten minutes before. She tried to force herself to calm down and turned to look out the window, her forehead meeting the glass with a surprisingly loud clunk.
“There’s a universal charging cable under the seat, Miss, and free WiFi if you’d like to use it.”
Of course there was. Couldn’t escape it these days. She didn’t want to appear rude so she smiled, thanked him and dutifully plugged in her battered mobile.
It flickered to life and within seconds several messages popped up… from her sister, a couple of friends, her elderly neighbour, even her hairdresser - clearly today’s events had hit the news. She drafted a quick reassurance, copied it to everyone and put the device down. She felt weirdly detached. It seemed strange that everyone was freaking out about her having been stuck in a cave when that had paled into utter insignificance compared to the shock she had experienced afterwards.
How could it be possible? He couldn’t have escaped, could he? If it hadn’t been for his reaction she’d have persuaded herself she was imagining things. But his reaction had been… compelling.
She picked up the phone again and opened a browser
‘International Rescue Scott’
An overwhelming plethora of photographs and articles and, wow ok, actual fan pages sprang up.
Most of the photos were distant, or amateur and blurry but his unmistakeable blue eyes shone out at her from the official ones - profile shots for International Rescue, some charity positions and… she gulped… he was the multi-billionaire CEO of one of the biggest companies on the planet. Even she knew of Tracy Industries - they were one of the good ones. A school in one of the more difficult neighbourhoods nearby had just had a complete IT infrastructure upgrade thanks to a grant from them.
His official TI profile confirmed his Air Force background, with honourable discharge after active duty. It didn’t say where that was but she knew.
Oh, she knew.
She skimmed some of the more gushing articles. All fairly light on objective facts but weighty on opinion and that opinion was pretty much universal - he was a hero, beloved by millions, a undoubted force for good in an often cruel and selfish world.
And she’d left him to die.
She closed the browser, no longer able to bear the accusation in his eyes.
“Are you alright, Miss?”
The taxi driver was watching her in the rear view mirror.
“I’m fine. Thank you.“
She let out a breath as his eyes returned to the road ahead. But he wasn’t done:
“Long day was it?”
“Something like that.”
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
For the second time in as many months Virgil vowed to chase Brains up on the speed upgrade to Two. It was absolutely pointless trying to catch up to his brother who could be halfway to anywhere by now. Thankfully, he had John and Five.
“Virgil! He’s heading back your way.”
“What?”
“One just did a U-Turn. She’s heading straight for you.”
“What do you mean “straight”?”
“A collision course. Virgil, I think you should get ready to take evasive action.”
Even at a moderate speed the two birds making any kind of head on contact…even a wing clip, meant mutually assured destruction. Was Two nimble enough to avoid that?
Scott would never risk Virgil being hurt.
But… he remembered the cold, unfamiliar look on the former fighter-pilot’s face as he’d spun to face him not ten minutes before. Was his brother in a state to know who was flying the ship chasing him down?
Virgil bit back a scream.
“Can’t EOS…?”
“No. She can’t. He’s blocked her access.”
Virgil looked down at the Atlantic far below him. Could he drop his ship safely on the surface of the water? He cut his speed.
“I’m tracking her path, I’ll tell you when to move.”
This couldn’t be happening. He tried the comm again, fighting to keep his voice calm and unthreatening:
“Scotty? Can you hear me bro? It’s me, Virgil. Please pick up? Please?”
“25 seconds, Virgil. Start reducing altitude.”
White knuckled, he tipped Two’s nose downwards and went to accelerate.
“Wait!”
“What? What???!”
“It’s ok. It’s ok, he’s adjusted course to pass on your port side. I’m… I misunderstood what… I’m sorry to have worried you.” John sounded almost light headed.
With her familiar crack-boom One shot past in a blur. Virgil flinched as her vapour trail crystallised on her sister’s windscreen for a few moments. He levelled Two off and pulled up the graphical readout of One’s tracker. Scott appeared to have done one of his signature handbrake turns and was heading back towards him at a more sedate pace… the rocket’s trajectory heading safely to the left of Two. Gleaming silver came into view alongside and Scott matched the green ship’s pace, the way he often did on journeys home from the more difficult rescues. Those times when Virgil knew his big brother needed company more than the adrenaline rush of g force and extreme speed.
The comm remained muted, but they were together. And that, until they got home at least, was all that mattered.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
The lift was broken again and Estera truly empathised with it as she dragged herself to the 5th floor. Her limbs were jelly and once she was on the right side of her front door she considered just lying down in the hall and having done with it. At which point 60 kilos of floof and enthusiasm canonballed into her and she realised with a quiet groan that she had to take him out before he destroyed everything in her apartment. Glancing down at her dusty sleeves as they contrasted with Bez’s snowy fur, she resolved to shower and change first else people would think she’d just escaped from a disaster zone.
Not so different from the state she was in when she first got here come to think of it. The darkness of the following few days in Processing crowded in on her and she didn’t have the energy to push it away. It was all too close to the surface today.
Bez licked the salt off her cheek.
With what felt like superhuman effort she dragged herself upright. At least here she had her own shower. And clean towels. Squeezing past the wall of hair she made it to the kitchen, draped her coat and bag over the back of a chair and spotted the note on the table:
Walked Niebieski. Soup in fridge. Glad you are safe.
Edith & George
She blinked back more tears. The elderly couple next door were an absolute godsend.
Ok. Shower. Soup. Stupid movie to prevent too much thought. Could maybe make some popcorn. That was a plan.
She did like a plan.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
The pool slid closed overhead and Scott allowed himself a few moments to sit back and breathe before regrouping and running through the comfortingly routine process of post-flight checks. His shoulder twinged sharply and that itchy trickling sensation reminded him that steristrips were no match for the physicality of flying a supersonic jet.
His vision lurched as her voice came back to him and he desperately focussed on grounding himself. He could hear the creaking of cooling engines, feel the harness over his shoulders, the seat beneath and around him. Wait, something else was off too. Something was pressing uncomfortably into his hip… he leaned to the side to extract the item from his baldric. A tiny Thunderbird 2 looked up from his palm, accusingly. His hand shook and the toy dropped, hitting the deck far below with a distant ping.
He stared down into the abyss.
Virgil was right. It wasn’t safe. HE wasn’t safe. If he couldn’t trust his mind to stay on track then he couldn’t be trusted. How could he keep his brothers safe from the world when he couldn’t even keep them safe from himself?
He tightened his fingers around the levers, every inch of the ship’s controls so familiar it was like an extension of his own limbs. Closer to him than his flight suit in a way. One was a part of him. IR was a part of him. Maybe the majority part. Certainly the best part.
If he couldn’t do this… then…
No. He shouldn’t think like that. He just needed more time. He flicked the switch to extend the chair and took a purposeful step down on to the gantry.
He had an apology to deliver.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Virgil looked down at his twitching, sleeping brother and fought back the urge to bear hug him and never let go. There had been plenty of those earlier. Scott begging for forgiveness he didn’t need. Virgil and John trying to reassure him, their words seeming so powerless and both desperately hoping that holding him tight could somehow piece their hero back together.
He hadn’t expected the honesty. That was new.
Scott had looked Virgil in the eye and told him he was right. He wasn’t ready, he wasn’t safe, he wasn’t ok. Virgil had shaken his head, denying the words he’d said over and over this last week. He didn’t want to be right. It was too painful. It wasn’t fair.
But Scott had been adamant - he was grounding himself for another fortnight. He needed time to process. Something had triggered him, he acknowledged that much, but he wasn’t ready to talk about it yet. He’d lowered his eyes and quietly asked if they wouldn’t mind staying with him because he didn’t want to be alone.
As if he could stop them.
And so the six of them crowded into the lounge in a nest of blankets, fluffy cushions and rogue bits of popcorn. Scott had sagged against Virgil’s shoulder and passed out not half an hour into the film. John curled on big brother’s other side, if he was asleep it was likely with one eye open. Allie and Gordon were a tangle of limbs on the floor while Kayo dozed with her head atop the pile.
They’d get through this together as they always had. As Virgil watched, Scott sighed in his sleep and his face relaxed. He was here and he was safe. Hopefully tonight the nightmares would leave him in peace.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Estera braced her feet and shoulders against the splintering wood and bit through her lip as she tried to remain silent despite the terror of the world tilting and sliding. The rumble of aircraft engines filled her head to the point where she wondered if she could even remember any other sound. But she knew where she was. This was to be expected. It would end soon. It had to.
The unsecured packing crate slammed into something again, her head rebounding painfully off the inside and she was consumed by nausea. The tiniest sob escaped and she froze. With a click the lid was opened and blinding light flooded into her streaming eyes as she tried to focus on the figure leaning towards her. It was him! Was she saved? Was she safe?
No.
Dread filled every cell of her body. Vivid blue eyes looked down at her but they were unseeing. A dark line ran from the corner of his mouth and then red, sickly gleaming red was everywhere. His blood was everywhere and it was her fault. His body fell heavily on top of her and the lid was slammed shut and she screamed for help until her throat burned.
Nobody came.

smut D, I, K, M, O, P, U & X for my favorite swede skwisgaar plzz<3333
D- Dirty Secret
Skwisgaar wants you to take control so badly. He knows how amazing he is at sex and the reputation he has to uphold in the bedroom, so he’s sort of ashamed of how desperately he wants to be tied up and used as his brain turns to mush with pleasure. He’s sick of being the expert in the situation, he sometimes just doesn’t want to think while he fucks.
He might eventually admit this to you, in a half-joking-but-not-really way while he desperately blushes of embarrassment. You should totally give in to him, he’s gonna be so pretty while he’s fucked out of his mind and willing to do anything to make you keep going.
I- Intimacy
He’s wonderful at making you feel special and loved during the deed. He touches all the right places, says all the right things, makes you feel good in all the right ways. And that’s without even trying! To him, your body is the same as his guitar; he has all the quirks on it’s form memorized and knows how to use them perfectly.
If he does put in the effort, he’s also very good at creating the perfect environment to make you lose yourself during sex. The smells, music, and textures he picks out are all hypnotic.
K- Kink
Anything you’re into, Skwisgaar is into. He’s willing to try out and indulge in anything you want just to make sure you get your pleasure; he already knows he’s gonna enjoy it either way. That being said, he does have some favorites;
Teasing/orgasm control, bondage, sensation play, exhibitionism, humiliation, GMilfs, begging, overstimulation, body worship, crying, and the list goes on.
M- Motivation
Literally anything and everything. This man gets so bricked up from the dumbest things. It’s very common that he misinterprets regular things you do as teasing or flirtation. “No, Skwisgaar, I was not trying to bite that apple in a seductive way!”
It’s hard to determine what is “motivation” to him because he’s never not down to mess around with you. You really don’t have to try and convince him, it’ll be the other way around more often than not.
That being said…he does sort of have a thing for playing hard to get. For the majority of his life, he’s had access to all the women he can dream of. So if you brush him off, act oblivious, or straight up deny him, it’ll spark a little flame of determination. He’s gonna be more flirtatious and sensual with you. The longer you hold back, the better he’ll make it feel when you finally give in.
O- Oral
Hoo, boy you’re gonna need to prepare yourself. He could make you come all over his mouth within minutes, shaking and moaning with one of the most intense orgasms you’ve ever had in your life. OR, and more likely, he’s gonna gently tease the hell out of you until you’re desperately begging him for release, slowly building the pressure until your insides fucking explode. It’s a win-win either way.
He actually doesn’t like receiving all that much. He’ll accept a blowjob from you, and will always pay you back, he’s definitely a fan of 69 but he won’t ask for one. If he was younger, definitely, but he thinks he’s a bit checked-out oral wise. Although, his favorite scenario to get oral in is the previously mentioned ‘fucked out of his mind’ version of Skwisgaar, where you edge the hell out of him. He definitely likes that.
P- Pace
Slow, sensual, and desperate. He’s definitely able to be quick and rough if you so please, be he prefers multi-hour sessions where both of you are complete enraptured in each other. This is the difference between his ‘fucking’ and his ‘love-making’; he used to have multiple girls a day, in and out the door every time he a few hours to spare. Now, his entire mind is consumed by the thought of you and clouded by how you feel and he wants to make it last.
U- Unfair
I’m gonna copy and paste this one from another ask because I think I’ve gotten my point across at things point;
Oh My God, he is such a little shit to you. He’s very good at determining at when you’re getting close to finishing and then pulling away at the very last second. He’s gonna grope at you and mutter absolute filth in your ear in public before walking away with the smuggest grin. He’ll act oblivious when you’re incredibly desperate and practically begging the pants off of him. But he’ll never leave you hanging too long; after all, he’s horny as well. It’s gonna be annoying for a while but so worth it when he finally gives into you.
Here’s a secret; Skwisgaar loves being teased. He gets so weak for it. He’ll be incredibly obnoxious, whining and pleading, but he’s really into it. Please hold him back, please make him work for an orgasm, please have him beg in order to touch you. He craves that feeling so badly.
X- X-ray
7 inches fully erect, but considerably thin with a large head. He’s uncircumcised. It sticks out straight again when he’s hard, no curves. A little bit veiny and like…no hairs. He’s very clean shaven.
Also copy n pasted I’ve been writing so much man. It’s a love/hate thing.

16. favorite place to write
💖💖💖💖💖
Jaz my beloved, hello!
2. a character whose POV you’re currently exploring
I normally write from an "omniscient" view point, so I don't really use like "character povs"
3. how you feel about your current WIP
Currently I'm working on my rewrite and I forgot how much I loved working on it. We are on ep. 27 though, which means we're getting to the mental hospital scene soon so that'll be fun. But I forgot how much fun it is to write it as well as liveblog/rewatch. God I love this stupid drama so damn much
5. first sentence of the fifth paragraph of an unpublished WIP
The only unpublished wip I have rn has a lot of dialogue and not so much paragraphs...but this is the closest "paragraph" I could find
“You’re right, I’m not” he agreed, just as Chen Yuzhi tripped over a rock and fell, causing him to cry out in pain before he rolled over to see the wolf coming straight towards him, its teeth barred.
7. your preferred writing fonts
For headcanons, Times New Roman, size 12, for actual fic writing Helvetica size 11
9. start to finish, how long did it take you to write the last fic you posted?
Hmm...last fic I posted (not updated cuz updated was 恨君不似江楼月 | Killer and Healer) was Second Chances. That fic, from start to finish...took me about...maybe 3-5 days?
10. what is the longest amount of time you’ve let a draft rest before you finished it?
Hmmm...good question. Maybe a few days...but it's very rare, unless a fic is fighting with me too much. I mainly work on the draft until it's done and then I post it (but I of course go over it one more time before I actually post, just to make sure I didn't misspell or forgot a word or something)
13. a fandom you’re thinking about writing for
Currently really only writing for CSI: Miami (trying to finish my multi-chapter fic, we're almost done), Killer and Healer, and S.C.I. I do have one more fic to post for White Cat Legend but other than that...I'm not really planning on writing for any new fandoms
16. favorite place to write
Either in my armchair by the window or in my bed. I can control the noise at home, so it makes it easy, and I don't have to worry about people trying to read my laptop screen
17. talk about your writing and editing process
Oof...there's not much to talk about. I get the idea, let it ruminate in my head, kind of start seeing scenes play out in my head/in dreams and then I just sort of...write. I've stopped trying to outline stuff because that just seems to fuck with my flow, so we don't do that anymore. But anyways, I just write until I'm content/I've told the story I want to tell, I'll bring up the "post a new work" page on ao3, type out all the necessary information, past the fic into the box, then copy and paste it into my notes app (cuz sometimes the formating from copying it from word to ao3 fucks up my indents) and then do a quick re-read/edit if I miss stuff and then I post. The only time I'll ever send a fic to someone (aka @ahhhnorealnamesallowed) is when I need a second pair of eyes/I'm sick of the fic but other than that...that's kinda how my process works
19. the most interesting topic you’ve researched for a fic
Oh, if you've read my fics you know that I research a lot of stuff for anything regarding my case fics, but I think the most interesting one is for my fic Violence Is Never the Answer...Except When It Is where I researched step by step instructions on how to clean a katana. There's never a dull moment in my fics, I promise you that, but that one was probably really interesting...and really in-depth
20. in what year did you publish your first fic?
Lord...like 2012? It was a fic that I wrote for a Kakavege fanart that I saw on Deviantart. I loved it and then messaged the artist if I could write a fic for it. They said yes and even linked it to their art. My deviantart account has since been deleted but that was definitely my first like true fanfic
23. pick three keywords that describe your writing
I have no idea how to describe my writing...other than maybe out there, fantastical, exciting?
Idk Jaz, how would you describe my writing?
26. are you able to write with other people around?
Oh yeah, as long as they don't ask what I'm working on nor do they look at my laptop
30. share a fic you’re especially proud of
Now...we all know that I'm very proud of 恨君不似江楼月 | Killer and Healer (and really, I should be) but I'm also really proud of For All Eternity because I flipped what I normally would do for Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi when writing xianxias/wuxias (I made Jiang Yuelou the immortal this time while Chen Yuzhi is the demon instead of the other way around) and yet I STILL kept them true to their personalities. So...yeah. I'm really happy with that fic and I hope more people read it because it's good (it's also inspired by Chinese Paladin 4 which was Mao's latest drama and my god was he gorgeous in that drama. He was also my favorite character but no one is surprised by this at all)

Fic Writer Interview
i was tagged by the lovely @forerussake, thanks so much!! what a fun list of questions. alright, here goes
name/nicknames: lynne
fandoms: mostly the king’s avatar these days, though i lurk and read fic in others
two shots: i’m assuming this is a two part fic. i don’t think i’ve ever written any of those, at least not deliberately. I do have a two chapter fic but the chapter break was added specifically to integrate my big bang artist’s piece into the fic, it wasn’t originally by design.
fic - Five Times Yu Wenzhou Gets Stuff Thrown At His Head and the One Time He (Finally) Catches Something
most popular multi-chapter fic: haha well i write almost exclusively one-shots so there’s not much to choose from.
and anyway, metrics are a finicky thing.
by kudos, Dressed for Sin (Shadowhunters) is the most popular. But that’s just because it’s the biggest fandom i’ve written multi-chapter fic in. By relative popularity within the fandom, this one would probably be pretty low on the list. But it’s one of my favorites because i got to write one of my favorite tropes: alternate first meetings.
fic - Dressed for Sin
Since it’s the end of the year i can indulge in a little navel gazing and say that my most popular fics overall were in leverage fandom, probably due to the size of the fandom at the time and writing What Fandom Wanted (ot3 with a focus on eliot, getting together fic with feelings).
If I was going to list my Most Popular (TM) fic based on my vibes for relative fandom popularity I’d probably say the de-aged ywz fic. I wouldn’t say it’s a popular fic overall, but in terms of what i’ve written, i feel like it’s the multi-chapter that’s gotten the deepest engagement. lol maybe because it’s the longest.
fic - Means of Transportation
lol that was a lot of words for someone who has written prob less than 10 multi-chapter fics but the year is ending and is there a better time to be self-indulgent?
actual worst part of writing: when i know exactly what i want but i just can’t get the words right. either because i don’t know exactly how to shape the plot or because the vibes are off or because i just can’t wrangle the dialogue or characterization. knowing what i want and being unable to get there is incredibly frustrating.
how do you choose your titles: I cry.
(okay, i actually do have a document where i keep snippets of lyrics and poetry but tbh they rarely come in handy. a lot of times i just blindly google lyrics to songs on my spotify playlists and hope for the best. my favorite is when i can snip a piece of narrative or dialogue to use as a title but oof the stars really have to align for that to work)
do you outline?: if the fic is longer than a scene or two, yes. it’s very helpful to know where the story is going. i also color code my outlines as I write (green, orange, red for written, in progress, and haven’t started writing yet) so i can get a quick view of where i am.
sometimes my outlines start as rambles and end up as real writing and then i can copy-paste that part of the outline into the actual fic and that is very satisfying.
callouts @ me: write that stupid, self-indulgent, silly idea!! it doesn’t have to be good, it doesn’t have to be a complete idea, it doesn’t have to be anything but fun. also, don’t feel bad about writing fifty thousand fics for the same pairing, you’re not here to be well-rounded, you’re here to have fun.
best writing traits: when i’m determined and in the midst of a project, i can be very good at sitting down regularly and doing 500 words of writing a day. which is wonderful for making progress. also i often get compliments about my characterization and humor in my fic, which i work very hard at.
spicy tangential opinion: i’m sure i have many of them but as usual, when i am asked to list them, they all *poof* into thin air. I have a not-so-spicy opinion that I hate 97% of epithets I come across and would like to throw “the smaller male” into the sun.

Packing: Van-Supported + Hotel Tour
(part 3 of 5) I'm gradually going through past trip notebooks and jotting down all my packing lists down in one place. I'm writing out my packing list for an upcoming trip now so I figured I might as well copy and paste it onto the blog as well...
In 2022 I went on a multi-week vehicle-supported stay-in-hotels tour: a ~1200 mile ride through Vietnam and Cambodia with TdA Global Cycling. Typically for this type of trip there’s a support van that transports one large duffel bag to the next night’s hotel for you, freeing you to just carry daily essentials on the bike.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The extra capacity combined with our more remote travel including gravel/dirt roads led me to pack heavier. My packing list for this type, climate, and length of trip (retroactively revised based on what I wished I’d had, or brought but didn’t use):
Clothes:
In general, I packed enough clothes to do laundry every six days (this bike tour was organized so we’d ride at most five full days in a row between days off), plus overnight hotel-room-sink laundry for crucial fast-drying items, and wool Ts I can wear multiple days.
Bike clothes:
(3-4x) padded bike shorts [two pairs is enough if washing in the sink each night, but when it’s raining or there isn’t an easy place to hang it to dry it’s nice to be able to take a day off laundry]
(6x) socks
(2x) shorts with pockets (“mountain bike style”) to wear over padded shorts, also fine to walk around town in
(2x) light merino wool t-shirts to both bike and walk around in
(1x) synthetic souvenir jersey from some past trip (conversation starter!)
mesh t-shirt to bike in on the hottest days (there isn't much I find comfortable to bike in on 90-100F sunny + humid days, but the AeroTech Delta Cooling T-shirt was pretty good)
lightweight cycle cap
bandana (can soak in water to cool down on the hottest days)
sun sleeves
arm warmers, leg warmers, leg sun shields [never needed, omit in this climate]
fingerless gloves
[tbd future] full finger waterproof gloves– there was one cold and rainy day at elevation they would have been appreciated
general-purpose bike-and-walk shoes
backup pair of shoes (in case first get wet and don’t dry by the next day)-- this only came up twice after very rainy days, but I was glad to have them. I save an ancient worn-out pair of shoes just for this.
flip-flops / crocs
[tbd future] hiking shoes with better arch support, or insoles [would be bulky, but on one many-hour hike on a rest day I was wishing I had these]
[tbd future] bike helmet brim (e.g. Da Brim) [wished I had more of a helmet visor some days, and this was great on the past Utah MTB dirt tour – on the other hands, it also catches the wind if biking faster]
[tbd future] hi-vis biking vest, especially for days with some dark road tunnels
Other Clothes:
gym shorts to change into after ride
(2x) long pants (one lpermethrin treated since I was in a malaria zone)
(3x) light t-shirts
(2x) long sleeve button up shirt (one quick-dry hiking style, one ‘dressy’)
bathing suit
brimmed hat
light pack towel in case of roadside swimming holes [didn’t end up carrying daily or using, may omit]
Wet Weather Gear
hi-vis yellow rain coat
[tbd future] loose rain poncho for rain in hot + humid weather, instead
rain pants and shoe covers [ineffective and sweaty after hours of riding, getting wet in a warm climate is OK, omitting]
Documents + Paper:
photocopies of passport ID page, visas, vaccination cards, travel insurance in a ziploc bag (I carry copies on me, leave originals in hotel bag)
high-level maps for the regions I’m going through
pocket phrase guide or one-page printout of common phrases and menu items
local travel guide
books / kindle
notebooks and pens
Medical + Hygiene
toiletries kit
on-bike travel medkit (including moleskin pads, ibuprofen, immodium)
antimalarials
antibiotic prescription
a few rapid Covid tests
masks
dry soap sheets
toilet paper + wet wipes in a ziploc bag
(2x) sunscreen
(2x) chamois cream
DEET
Basic Bike Tools
As per my standard “on the bike” list:
travel pump
patch kit
spare tube
tire levers
multitool including chain break and master link
grease-cutting hand wipes
More Bicycle Spare Parts and Tools
Since we’d be out in rural areas without easy access to bike shops, I packed additional parts in my hotel bag, as on a supported tour there was an emergency vehicle in case of a major breakdown):
(2x) spare tires (I did end up using one of them, when one tire accumulated multiple larger punctures)
(5x) spare tubes (managed to use 3 plus some patches on a month-long tour with moderately rough roads)
bicycle lube (Boeshield T-9 or other), double-bagged in two ziplocs in case of leak (the bottle did leak once-- I'm glad I bagged it)
rag for chain
(2x) spare brake cables and housings
(2x) spare shift cables and housings
(2x pairs) brake pads
(1x) spare set of pedals (likely unnecessary, omit next time)
(4x) spare spokes (the right length for the front wheel and drive and non-drive sides of the rear wheel– I had to chat with the original bike manufacturer to double-check these)
8mm allen L-key (stiffer than multitool, for pedals / seat during bike unpacking)
spare chain and master link
extra moist towelettes
zip ties
duct tape
Food
This kind of supported tour generally offers a midday lunch / snack popup by the side of the road, and periodic towns where we could buy snacks, but I packed about one snack for every two days just to have some familiar options (peanut butter and dried pineapple) as well as some hydration salts.
Electronics:
(2x) outlet adapters
(2x) USB chargers
cables
small USB battery pack (enough to charge everything for one night-- occasionally a hotel didn't have enough working plugs)
bike computer / GPS
backup distance-only bike computer [didn't use, the phone is already my backup for my GPS, omit]
bright daylight-visible taillight (I like the Cygolite Hotshot Pro series)
bike headling
headlamp [somewhat redundant with headlight and phone, may omit]
waterproof camera [nice for taking photos on rainy days while keeping phone tucked away in a plastic bag, but may omit next time]
[tbd future] ipad or tiny laptop, if part of a longer trip where I may want to do some work or writing
Bags:
duffel bag (I've been happy with my 100L Patagonia Black Hole)
hip pack (for extra water (Evoc Hip Pack Pro = 1.5L), snacks, toiletries on bike [may omit now that I have a small frame bag]
day pack for hikes (don't need both this and hip pack)
single pannier for carrying clothing on rainy or cold days (usually not needed) or if going on a DIY side trip -- omit on next trip to simplify and allow me to remove bike rear rack as well
stem bag (for sunglasses, sunscreen, extra water)
top tube bag (snacks)
Other Misc
backup pair of glasses
glasses wipes
sunglasses
[tbd future] clothesline for hotel room / balcony: paracord + binder clips + two carabiners
[tbd future] ultralight sleeping bag liner (for a niche problem: there were a few days when it was too hot to sleep under a comforter, but the hotel didn’t provide a top sheet, and bugs or aggressive breeze from the hotel fan on my skin were distracting when trying to sleep, maybe this would help)
Weight:
Not counting the bike and helmet or the clothes I wore onto the plane, the original version of this packlist came to about 48lbs (22 kg) in the duffel bag. Once I was riding with some of it on the bike (hip pack, bike bags, tools, snack bars, and so on), the duffel that was transferred between hotels weighed about 40lbs (18kg).
The revised version of this packlist for a future trip (removing the strikeout items and adding most of the "tbd future" items) also came to about 48 lbs as checked on the plane total including the bike bags, or about 43 lbs / 19.5 kg once some items were carried on the bike. Not quite at my goal of 18kg but close... I could pack lighter and with fewer separate sub-bags, but I like being organized and bringing a few new pieces of clothing/gear to try each trip.

The next morning, you blinked awake to find yourself wrapped snugly in Rowan’s arms. You could hear him snoring gently behind you, and his chest was pressed warmly against your back.
You glanced over at the clock on the wall. We have to go soon, to catch that Portkey.
Slipping out of Rowan’s embrace, you headed into the shower and washed up.
By the time you came back out, Rowan was gone. In fact, he wasn’t even in the room anymore.
You wrapped a bathrobe around yourself and headed for the door. You opened it and stuck your head outside, wondering if you might spot Rowan leaving or coming back to your room.
You spotted Rowan standing in the middle of the hallway, only two doors down. He had his ear pressed up against the door. You stared at him in surprise.
Catching you poking your head out of the room, Rowan quickly lifted his finger and pressed it to his lips, indicating for you to stay silent. Then, he motioned for you to go back inside your room. Instead, you came and joined him at the door.
Rowan tried to stop you, but you slapped his hand away and pressed your ear against the door, too.
At once, you heard the innkeeper’s voice, saying loudly, “Yes! Yes, I swear to you, it was Scamander. He rented a room from me yesterday – he’s still here now! – and you know what? He brought a woman with him.”
Another voice, a woman’s voice, replied, with great interest, “A woman? Was she blonde? Wearing a print dress? Clutching a pink handbag?”
“Uh, no. Blue-haired. No handbag that I can remember.”
“Blue hair? My goodness. He’s branching out in his tastes, isn’t he? He usually goes for the more feminine sort.”
By now, Rowan was trying to pry you off the door and you were doing your damnedest to hold onto the door knob.
Rowan hissed into your ear, “You – let – go – right – now!”
You shook your head furiously and held onto the doorknob even tighter.
Meanwhile, the innkeeper continued, “Yeah, and I tell you what – he wasn’t shy about her, either! I heard them going at it for hours yesterday night!”
“Really?!”
“Yes, moaning and groaning and thumping and all the rest!”
“Excellent. Well, as promised, here’s 25 Galleons. Thank you for your information. You’re doing journalism a great service, I tell you!”
Rowan grabbed you around the waist and gave you a hard yank. Your hands finally slipped off the doorknob.
“Ah!” you gasped.
Both you and Rowan went tumbling back onto the floor.
“Ugh!” Rowan groaned as he fell back against the floor, and you landed on top of him.
There was a sudden rush of footsteps and then – the door slammed open.
“Oh, my! Speak of the devil!”
“Quick – get a picture!”
“Wha -?” Your bathrobe was in complete disarray and yet, the journalist already had her camera out and pointed towards you.
“Wait, no!” you started to yell.
Smash!
Rowan leapt to his feet, snatched the camera out of the journalist’s hands and dashed it against the floor, where it broke into several pieces.
The journalist gasped. “Rowan Scamander! Do you have any idea how expensive that camera is?”
“You can bill me for it later, Rita,” Rowan said grimly.
Rita laughed. Then, she pointed at you with a long, garish green quill. “So, this is the girl, eh? Anything you’d like to say about Rowan?”
Rowan made a snatch for the quill as well, but Rita managed to whip it away in time.
Then, Rowan stepped back, shielding you from view. “Don’t you dare drag her into your disgusting world, Skeeter.”
“Disgusting?” Rita looked highly offended. “My readers would beg to differ - ”
“Then they’re disgusting, too,” Rowan said shortly. Turning his head slightly to speak to you, Rowan murmured lowly, “Go. I’ll catch up with you.”
You were worried – not for yourself, but for Rowan. He was shivering all over with a dangerous energy. “You’re – Are you going to hurt them?”
“I’m just going to have a word with the innkeeper.”
The way he’s speaking promises something violent, though, you thought. Yet, you knew you would only make the situation more difficult by staying here. You pressed your hands against Rowan’s back, trying to be reassuring. “I’m fine, so, please don’t do anything on my behalf. Come back to our room quickly.”
Shooting Rita and the innkeeper a nasty look, you hurried back to your room.

The minute you shut your door behind you, Rowan said, in a clipped voice, “You can go, Rita.”
Rita grinned. “Well, I got what I came here for, anyways. And, my goodness, Rowan, you’re soft with her, aren’t you? Whispering to her like that…”
Rowan glared at her.
Rita laughed, but her laugh was now nervous. “Never mind. You’ll read it all in the article tomorrow.”
Rowan growled lowly, “One of these days…”
“Yes, one of these days,” Rita said airily. “But for now, there’s nothing you can do to me, is there? Even the Ministry won’t let you off easy if you hinder their gossip column reporter…”
With that, Rita waved her fingers at Rowan before she strutted away.
Rowan grabbed the front of the innkeeper’s shirt and dragged him back into the room he’d come from. Once inside, he slammed the innkeeper against the wall.
“Sir! I’m sorry, sir!” the innkeeper yelped, terrified.
“I can’t threaten her, but I can threaten you,” Rowan growled furiously. “If you let Skeeter print even one word about the woman who came with me, I will make sure your inn never sells another room again. Am I understood?”
“Y-Yes!”
“Good. Now go.” Rowan let go of the man’s shirt.
The innkeeper hurriedly scrambled away, desperate to catch Rita and persuade her to change the details of the story to make you unidentifiable.
*     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *
Rowan came back to the room, to find you already dressed and waiting nervously for him. A heavy silence engulfed the room. You bit your lower lip, too anxious to say anything.
Rowan merely asked you, “Are you ready to go?”
“Yes.”
Rowan reached into his cloak, as if to make sure he had something. Then, he held his hand to you. “Let’s get the hell out of here.”
You took his hand. To your relief, Rowan squeezed your hand gently, as if telling you not to worry, before he led you out of the room.
You remembered what Rowan had said to you yesterday, when the innkeeper had gone out of his way to give you two a bigger room.
“People are exhausting,” Rowan breathed out.
You said to him, “People shouldn’t feel exhausting to you, Rowan. Not when they’re tripping over their feet to make you comfortable.”
Rowan barked out a short, bitter laugh. “Comfortable?”
Now, you were starting to understand why he had reacted that way.
*     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *
The bright, beaming girl was waiting for you and Rowan. Rowan was polite enough, but he barely looked her way. Instead, he wrapped his arm around your waist and pulled you in close to him. You stared up at him for a moment, wondering if he was all right and simultaneously knowing he wasn’t. Because Rowan wouldn’t look at you either.
The girl yelled out, “All right – 3, 2, 1!” You and Rowan reached out together and touched the glowing bucket at the same time.
Whoosh!

Remus checked the newspapers every day, scanning it to make sure that was nothing about Sirius in there. For even though Sirius was still living with him, Remus didn’t trust Sirius to stay out of trouble. Besides, there was no telling what Wormtail was up to these days. So, even when Sirius repeatedly told him that he was being a good boy and staying put, Remus still carefully scanned the Daily Prophet every morning. Every time he flipped a page, Remus shot a dubious glance at Sirius, who was sitting across from him at the table and sipping black coffee.
Remus made to skip over the ‘Gossip’ column when a name caught his eye. He hesitated and looked closer. “Rowan Scamander, famous Magizoologist and child prodigy of Newt and Tina Scamander, was reported to have spent last night at the Knuckleberry Inn with a new woman. Sources report that she had bright pink hair and a terrible, scowling attitude...”
Remus frowned. Pink hair? But Lovely’s got blue hair.
At once, his mind went into overdrive. Did she dye it pink? Maybe to match Rowan’s hair a bit more, so they could be a couple? Or maybe it wasn’t her at all, but another woman - but why would Rowan be with another woman? He wasn’t cheating on her, was he? If he did, he deserves a long, slow, painful death. Wait. Did he and Lovely part ways already? But then, where is Lovely? Is she safe? Is she all right?
“Moony?” Sirius looked over confusedly at Remus, who had suddenly stood up,
“Er - nothing. Sorry.” Remus sat back down. He tried to act normal, but a moment later, he had buried his head in his hands and was gripping at his hair. She did have blue hair, right? I haven’t gone completely insane. Right?
Sirius reached over and tapped Remus’ shoulder. “No, you haven’t got blue hair, Remus. But, if you keep yanking at your hair like that, pretty soon you’re going to have no hair at all.” Sirius grinned, as he mused, “A hairless werewolf. Now, that would be interesting.”
“Shut up, Padfoot,” Remus muttered despondently. “I’ve already got enough in my head without that cursed image in my mind.”

Japan.
You stared out at the snow-capped mountaintops. While the mountaintops were crested in white snow, the forest that lay immediately before you was clearly in summer mode. Flowers were bursting into life on the forest floor, and the sunlight above filtered down through the lush foliage to cast yellow-green light everywhere.
“Do you know where we need to go?” Rowan asked you.
“To a point.”
Rowan gazed at the forest for a moment. He realized, “I’ve been here before.”
You looked back at him, surprised. “You have? When?”
“Some years ago… My father and I were chasing a kappa.”
“Kappas are Japanese water demons, right?”
“Yes. And I remember…” Rowan hesitated. He couldn’t quite put into words what he had experienced. He had been running after his father, who had been single-mindedly chasing the kappa, when all of a sudden, the ground under his feet had shifted. Rowan had stopped, wondering if an earthquake was occurring. But everything was already still and back to normal. He had called out to his father, then…
“Father…”
Newt looked back at his son. “What is it, Rowan? Is something the matter?”
“Do kappas produce force fields?”
Newt shook his head. “You know they don’t, Rowan.”
Meanwhile, less than a mile away, you had just exited the eternal winter world, and unbeknownst to you, you were now carrying the Nine-Tailed Fox within your very soul…
*     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *
The two of you were walking through the forest. Neither of you had spoken in hours.
Feeling a great need to break the awkwardness, you said, as playfully as you could, “So, you’ve dated a blonde woman who carries a pink handbag, hm?”
Rowan muttered, “I didn’t realize you picked up on that.” “Oh, come on,” you teased, “tell me about her.”
“You know her, too.”
“I do?”
“Yeah, she went to Hogwarts with us. Magdalene. She was a Hufflepuff.”
You frowned. “She was our year?”
“Yes.” Rowan glanced at you. Seeing the complete confusion on your face, he became amused. “You really didn’t interact with very many people at Hogwarts, huh?”
You shrugged.
“Her mother’s the Head of International Magical Cooperation,” he explained. “So she crosses paths quite a bit with my parents, and I end up seeing Mag a lot. In fact, when my father and I were responsible for tracking down all of the creatures’ movements, we had to report to her.”
“Ah. And have you – er  - ?” “What? Slept with her?” Rowan seemed amused that you would even ask such a thing. “Yeah, I have.”
“How many times?”
“Is this an inquisition?”
“Just answer.”
“I used to see her about once a month -”
“Once a month!” Your eyes bulged.
“ – To report our findings to her,” he answered smoothly.
“Oh.”
Rowan smirked tauntingly as he finished, “And we fucked every time.”
“Christ,” you muttered.
“I haven’t seen her for over a year now, though. We’ve been busy with our own things.”
“Ah.”
Rowan watched you, as you were walking in front of him. He thought you were so cute to ask about these things, and he was happy to know that you were curious at all. It showed, for once, a tiny bit of possessiveness on your end, too. But it wouldn’t match up anywhere close to his, Rowan knew, as he asked you now, “Well, what about you?”
You looked back over your shoulder at him. “What about me?”
“You wouldn’t believe the amount of snide comments I got from Tristan about you,” Rowan finally revealed. “About how well he took care of you on my behalf. Fucking bastard.”
You hurriedly looked forward again, as you felt a warm blush sweep over your face. “It was merely a matter of convenience,” you said humbly.
Rowan suddenly caught up with you. He grabbed your wrist and made you spin around. “Oh, yeah? Just convenience?”
You refused to meet Rowan’s eyes as you replied, “Yep.”
“You didn’t find him handsome, like all the other girls tend to?”
In a clipped voice, you responded, “Finding someone handsome and having sex with them has no relationship. It’s not mutually inclusive or exclusive.”
Rowan replied quite quickly, “So – that’s a yes, then?”
“Okay, Rowan, this is an inquisition.” You poked at his chest. “Will you get out of the way? We need to keep going.”
Rowan’s response was to firmly guide you to the nearest tree and press you up against it. “Answer me. You found him handsome?”
You finally looked Rowan square in the eyes. “Yes, for Merlin’s sake, he’s handsome. I’m sure anyone would agree. Even you.”
“Sure, he’s handsome, the smug bastard,” Rowan muttered. Then, gazing down at you, he asked crudely, “Tell me. Did you find him handsome when he fucked you?” He lifted his hand and traced your lips with his fingers. “Did you think to yourself how good-looking he was when he was inside of you? And did you whimper like a bitch in heat when you fell to your knees and sucked on his cock?”
There was no helping it – you flushed a bright red now. Irritated, you muttered, “Why do you have to talk like that?”
“Anyone else?” Rowan asked you, intending to make the most of it while the two of you were on this subject. “Anyone else have the honor of taking your tight little cunt all to himself for a night?”
I wonder if steam is coming out of my head, you wondered vaguely.
“C’mon, love.” Rowan gently slapped your cheek.
That’s it. With a growl, you pounced on him. Grabbing Rowan by the collar, you shoved him down while raising your right foot to trip him.
Rowan went sprawling. “Oof!”
You jumped on top of him and grabbed his collar again. “Will you stop trying to embarrass me, you disrespectful little twerp?”
Rowan burst out laughing.
Son of a - ! You grabbed a handful of leaves and threw them at his face.
Rowan sputtered in his laughter, but he only said, “Ah, you should see how flustered you get, love. It’s only sex.”
“All right. Fine.” You sat on top of Rowan, who was still lying on the ground. Trying to tease him back, you slowly began to grind your hips again him, as you told him, “It wasn’t just Graves. There was another man, too – Severus Snape.”
Rowan breathed out when he felt you moving on top of him, but, far from being disarmed, he only grinned and remarked, “Ah, so it’s really not about being handsome.”
“Wha -?” Your mouth dropped open. “That’s so mean!”
Rowan laughed heartily.
You thumped him in the chest. “Damn you, Rowan Jacob Scamander!”
“Ow!” Rowan gasped softly, but then, he caught your hand and then –
Fwump. He flipped the two of you so that suddenly, you were under him.
You blinked up at him dizzily, surprised by finding yourself abruptly lying on the forest floor.
Rowan had put one hand under your head, to make sure you didn’t hurt yourself when you fell back, and with his other hand, he was still grasping your wrist. Keeping you there under him, he asked you, “And what about me?”
“You?”
“Yeah. What do you think about me?”
Annoyed at him, you replied, “I’d say you’re not nearly as handsome as Tristan Graves, nor are you as profoundly intelligent as Severus Sn – ah!”
Rowan pushed his hips against yours. His broad, sturdy hips lifted yours clean off the ground for a moment, while your chin met your chest briefly. Then, sitting back down on his heels, Rowan challenged you, with his voice in a light growl, “You sure about that?”
“Ah – um… y-yes,” you stuttered out.
“You absolutely sure?”
“Yes,” you stressed.
Rowan’s eyes were so lively. Looking up at him, seeing the backdrop of the endless bright blue sky and yellow-green leaves, his bright hair, warm eyes, and cinnamon freckles stood out more than ever. He looks… carefree, you thought. Thank Merlin. After what happened at that inn, I’m so glad he’s all right.
Rowan saw it – the way the hardness in your eyes melted. Smiling, he leaned down and nuzzled your cheek with his nose. “But you prefer me, anyways.” He touched the tip of your nose with his. “Right?”
You couldn’t help but smile. You slid your arms around his shoulders, as you whispered back, “Right.”
Rowan’s mouth caught yours in a warm kiss. You hugged him, pulling him down on top of you to deepen the kiss. For a moment, on that forest floor, patterned with the canopy of summer foliage, there stood out Rowan’s ginger hair and your blue hair, as the two of you kissed and held onto each other.
A few minutes passed, when you suddenly clutched onto the back of Rowan’s cloak and reminded him, in a soft whisper, “We have to keep moving.”
Rowan sighed. “But I haven’t made you repent yet.”
“For what?”
“For implying that those other men were better for you.”
“I never said such a - ”
“You did.” Rowan’s hand slipped from your face to your throat. You felt his warm, thick fingers wrap around your neck for a moment, as he whispered into your ear, “And you’ll pay for that, little one.”
You held your breath.
Rowan withdrew his hand. He stood up, pulling you up with him. “But later,” he agreed. He reached out and brushed a few stray leaves caught in your hair off your head. “We better get moving. Don’t want you to get stuck in your fox form, do we?”
You shook your head furiously. For a moment, Rowan pictured the way your fox ears would erratically flop on your head from you shaking your head like that. With a soft smile, Rowan nodded at you, indicating that you should go ahead.
*     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *
Three hours later, you were finally close to the heart of the mountain, where the slit in the time-space fabric – the entrance to this strange, impossible winter land – lay. But the truth was that the Nine-Tailed Fox was putting up a hell of a struggle inside of you.
With every step you took, the Fox dug her claws deep inside of your chest and she sank her entire spiritual weight (which was immense) into you, so that every step forward felt like you were dragging forth a million bricks.
Will – you – come – on? you growled in your head.
No! The Fox barked back at you and snapped her jaws furiously.
You winced and stumbled back a few steps.
“Whoa.” Rowan grabbed you. “Are you all right?”
“I’m fine,” you replied, despite the fact that you were breathing quite heavily.
You tried to step forward again, when the Fox flashed her tails and you felt a bolt of blue lightning go through your body. You collapsed.
“Hey!” Rowan caught you again. “What’s going on?”
“N-Nothing,” you said feebly. “It’s just – We’re close. We’re nearly there.”
Rowan looked confusedly at the patch of forest the two of you were standing in. It looked exactly like all the other parts of the forest you’d been traipsing through for the past four hours.
“Nearly where?”
Grimacing, you shook your head at him. “I can’t tell you.”
“And, for the thousandth time,” Rowan asked, “why not?”
“Because,” you replied cryptically, “if you know exactly where it is and what it is, you can never get out.”
“That’s some real myth logic right there.” Rowan sighed grimly. “I always preferred natural creatures.”
I’ll change your mind, the Fox promised silkily. That is, if you stop this silly girl from dragging us back to this eternal prison.
Rowan paused and looked at you.
“Don’t listen to her,” you said bluntly.
Hmpfh. Displeased with you, the Fox turned her head away.
“All right. I’ll accept the fact that you can’t tell me where exactly our destination is,” Rowan said. “But then, how am I supposed to know whether we’re close or not?”
You reached out and grasped Rowan’s hand. “You have to trust me.”
Rowan’s eyes swept across your face. But he found that you weren’t even looking at him. Instead, you were concentrating very hard on a spot about ten feet in front of you.
Rowan turned his head and tried to see whatever it was you were seeing. Only, there seemed to be nothing there.
Still gripping Rowan’s hand, you stepped forward – you could see it – that glimmering stitch in the air that only those who knew to look for it would ever see. It was a tiny, sparkling, silver slit in the air that could easily be walked past,  mistaken for sunlight or a drifting spider web. But you knew it wasn’t.
You lifted your hand and reached for it.
No! The Fox rammed her snout against your chest.
“Ow!” You winced and your hand closed into a fist for a moment.
Rowan gripped your other hand back. “What’s going on -?” You shook your head. Taking a deep breath, you reached forward again.
Stop it! You can’t - ! You musn’t - ! The Fox threw back her head and howled long and loud.
I will! You formed an unbreakable resolve in your heart. You may be taking up quite a bit of my soul, but my body is still mine! I will enter if I wish!
The Fox growled back at you angrily, It’s not your world to go back to! A grumble ran through her chest and blue fire began to spurt up around her. Her tails swished furiously in the air, leaving streaks of blue flame whistling through the air. You let out a pained whimper as you felt as though the inside of your body was being charred alive by burning blue fire.
But you were close – so close – Your index finger touched the sparkling silver rip in the air… At once, your hand was freezing cold. You gritted your teeth as ice and fire warred in your body. You were shaking all over. Rowan was extremely concerned about you. But you couldn’t hear a thing he was saying. All you could do was focus on getting through – you thrust your hand through the gap, widening it and –
NO! The Fox cried aloud. NO, WHY MUST YOU RETURN US TO THIS PRISON?
You had no reply, for you were already tumbling forward into the snowy landscape of the eternal winterland.
*     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *
“Pft!” Terribly confused, Rowan spat out a mouthful of snow. “What in the world - ?” His mouth fell open as he took in the sight of a landscape that could not exist in reality – a landscape of perfect winter. Every line in this world was defined so sharply that the very air one breathed almost cut, like glass, and yet, because everything was colored a ghostly white, it was difficult to make out anything at all. Just the act of looking out into this world gave one headaches and made one question their sense of reality. This was particularly true for Rowan, who was a very practical-minded person.
Meanwhile, having stumbled in first, you had tumbled further down the hillside. For a moment, you lay there in the snow, dizzy from the tumble. You blinked up at the white sky, while a white moon – or was it a white sun? – dimly lit up the world through a veil of thick clouds. Snow flurries streaked down from the sky, landing on your cheeks.
No… the Fox whispered. Why did you come back?
You know why, you told her. This place is a time crystal. Time doesn’t progress the way it does in the real world. So, as long as I stay here, I should be able to prevent your nine hundredth birthday from coming. Right?
You are so single-minded. Yes, you are right about the way time works here. But whereas in the real world, time was your only enemy; here, there are other terrors to be dealt with. You have made a foolish trade – in no longer worrying about time, you must now worry about other terrors that you know nothing about.
Like what? A deep frown appeared on your face, as you pondered, what exactly is this place?
The Fox sighed sadly. You should have asked that question before you entered this realm.
Well, you replied, tell me now.
*     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *
There was a time when mythology flourished – when tales of the fantastical were believed in. Of course, fantasy had it’s own logic, but at the time, people were willing to believe it, and that allowed that logic to take on manifestations of phenomena.
However, as the world confused survival with power, strict delineations were made between what was logical and illogical, what was considered  fantastical and ‘real.’ The world grew duller and the sparks of energy required to sustain the fantastical became rare.
At the time of this transition, the Nine-Tailed Fox was only a baby. Her youth made her more adaptable and she grew up with a certain immunity to the harsh delineations that were killing off the rest of the mythological beasts. She recognized that the world was harsh and bitter, but she was able to accept that fact in a way her elders seemed unable to.
As the mythological world shrank, the Fox had to watch as, one by one, her family of Nine-Tailed Foxes and her friends – the snow spirits, the artic sirens, the winter owls, and the ice phoenixes – all began to fade away, starving from want of spirit energy.
In less than five hundred years, the Nine-Tailed Fox was almost completely alone. The only ones who remained were herself and a single ice phoenix.
As spirit energy diminished even further, the Nine-Tailed Fox and the ice phoenix realized that they needed to create a type of haven if they were to sustain any mythological life.
The Nine-Tailed Fox created an illusionary world that could house myth. It was a world of snow and ice because that was her natural element. Meanwhile, her last friend, the ice phoenix, made the ultimate sacrifice. He didn’t tell the Fox beforehand because he knew she would prevent him from doing it, but when the day came that the Nine-Tailed Fox proudly came to announce that she had finished building her world, the ice phoenix tore out his own heart. He died, but his heart remained – burning into ashes, then becoming re-born, over and over again – and that energy sustained, and continues to sustain, this winterland.
In that way, the mythological world was saved. Only, the Nine-Tailed Fox was dreadfully alone in this world. There was nothing to distract her, either, because it was simply her internal world externalized. She knew this landscape like the back of her paw. There was nothing to explore here.
Thus, the world of myth had been saved, but there were no creatures to fill it. At first, the Nine-Tailed Fox continued to hold onto hope, but when more than six hundred years had passed, her loneliness finally won out. She finally admitted to herself that she was keeping this realm alive for nothing.
I must have been too selfish, the Fox thought to herself. I only wanted a haven for spirits like me to flourish. But I was too hasty or too immature. Perhaps it’s not my place to care for anyone else. And this desolate place is just a reflection of my mistake, of my barren soul. It’s a prison – it’s a place where I should remain, to reflect upon my sins, until I die.
So, the Nine-Tailed Fox buried herself in a snowy hillside and waited to die. Only, she found that she couldn’t. Something was keeping her tethered to this pseudo-world. She didn’t know why. The Fox didn’t know that, thousands of miles away, in a tiny attic of a magical castle, a strange little soul was poring over books and staring out windows, dreaming of the Fox and believing that she was alive and absolutely worth seeing. That small, blue-haired dreamer didn’t realize that she was creating sparks of mythical energy and the Fox didn’t realize that she was on the receiving end of it.
However, while the sparks of energy kept the Fox alive and awake, in her mind, the Fox’s loneliness had beaten out her hope, so that a strange thing began to happen in the Fox’s spirit. Just as magical powers can become a malignant Obscurial in a witch or wizard, the Fox’s spiritual energy can transform into ‘succubus’ energy.  Succubi and incubi are born in many ways and take many forms, but one of these ways occurs when a mythological spirit suffers intensely and for a long period of time from want of spiritual energy. That hunger overwhelms the spirit’s other wants and needs and forms a malignant agency of its own. A succubus was born within the Fox’s soul.
Then, who should come along but you and your little artic fox… By that point, over thirteen hundred years had passed. The succubus spirit within the Fox was so famished that she burst out of the Fox and immediately made to devour you. However, the Nine-Tailed Fox stopped her and instead wondered if you might be the vessel through which they escaped. The succubus spirit was convinced and allowed the Fox to inhabit you…
The Fox had hoped that, at some point, you would resolve the hollow space of your own soul, thus vanquishing the succubus and forcing the Fox out of your soul – and letting them die. The Fox had learned of human beings as fickle creatures. So, she was surprised when, against all reason, you refused to close up this hollow in your heart that kept whispering the strange name of “Remus Lupin”…
And now, with that hollow still in your heart, you’d dragged the Fox back into this eternal winterland. Yes, time looped here, but in dragging the Fox back here, you were forcing her into her prison, into the loneliest place she had ever been, and by consequence, the succubus within the Fox woke up, stronger than ever, and needing to devour souls…
*     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *
“Hey. Wake up! C’mon, open your eyes!”
Your eyes flashed open. So that’s why, you realized. That’s why… when I first transform, I take on the Fox’s features – her ears and tails, but if I go further than that, I take on the features of that deathly beautiful woman – that’s the succubus within the Fox.
Rowan was shaking your shoulders none-too-gently.
I should have known, you thought. The Nine-Tailed Fox does take on human form to amuse itself and it does take energy from humans through sex and sensuality, but it’s not nearly as intense and frequent as a succubus would require.
“Oh, thank Merlin!” Rowan breathed out. “I thought you’d… Damn it, why’d you scare me like that? Huh?” He hugged you so tightly it hurt.
“I’m okay,” you told Rowan.
Sitting up, you saw that you and Rowan were still sitting on the snowy hillside you’d landed on. Night had fallen.
Rowan, seeing you looking around, commented, “This place is beautiful, but it gives me the creeps. Everything is so stilted here. And there isn’t any other life apparent. No tracks in the snow or anything… ”
“Yes,” you agreed quietly. “Time works differently here.”
You hesitated. If what the Fox said is true, then the succubus is going to wake up within me soon.
It was an impossible situation. If you stepped out into the real world, time would catch up with you, the Fox would turn nine hundred, and upon receiving her ninth tail, she would overwhelm you. If you remained in here, keeping the Fox lonely and desolate, the succubus would erupt out of the Fox and overtake you and devour either your soul or the souls of anyone around you.
I warned you not to come back, the Fox said miserably. I told you that your best chance was to let this young man, Rowan, help you heal the hollow in my heart out in the real world. Why didn’t you listen to me?
Do you think Rowan can help me here? you wondered. Wait - more importantly, is he safe here?
I don’t know, the Fox whispered. There’s no telling what the succubus will do. And – while in the real world, the succubus and I are both forced within the confines of your soul and body, this winterland is a spiritual world, which means she can detach herself from both of us and physically wander her as herself.
You mean, she can exist apart from you?
Yes. Don’t you remember when you first met me? Well, to be more accurate – remember the first time you met her?
You remembered.
Silver eyes blinked at you from behind a brilliant curtain of flashing white tails.
Then, the very air shifted – and a most beautiful woman was standing before you. Her raven black hair, perfect blood-red lips, and her seductive eyes, framed in thick lashes, were all contained in a lovely heart-shaped face. She was dressed in gorgeously embroidered silver silk robes with red roses stitched all over the long arms of the robe. The red detailing looked chillingly beautiful across the otherwise white landscape. It looked like the world was bleeding out on the robe and lips of this most ethereal woman. Her blood-red lips parted, and she began to speak in a most mesmerizing voice, “Little girl, why are you in this forest? Did you mean to trespass on my territory?”
“So, that woman I met – she’s your succubus form?”
The Fox nodded.
“What was your human form like before that?”
“More nymph-like. Lighter, airier… With blue hair.”
You paused. “With blue hair?”
“Yes…”
Despite the hopelessness of the situation, you smiled a little. “That’s good to know…”
What will you do, little one? the Fox wondered. Also, you must remember – if you send Rowan away, you won’t have a way out of here. Because of the way that time works here – in eternal loops – once you have knowledge of this place, you cannot get out. Otherwise, the time crystal would break.
You let out a deep breath. Then, you turned to Rowan, “Rowan.”
“What is it?”
Reaching over, you took his hand in yours. “Thank you for coming with me.”
“I think I should be thanking you, for letting me tag along. Now, mind explaining what this place is?”
You shook your head. “Can’t tell you that.”
“Still?” Rowan huffed impatiently.
You smiled. He looks so young when he does that. You squeezed his hand tightly, as you told him, “Listen, Rowan, if you climb back up the hill, you’ll see a golden slit in the air. That’s the doorway out of here.”
“Right. It was a silver slit in the air coming in,” Rowan recalled. “So, going out, it’s reverse energy.”
“Exactly.”
“That makes sense…” Rowan’s voice trailed off. He looked at you. “But why are you telling me this?”
“Because…” You slipped your hand out of his. “I want you to go.”
Rowan’s eyes flashed open. “To -?”
“Go. Yes.”
“And you’re coming with me, naturally.”
“No. I have to stay here.”
“I’m to leave you here?”
“Yes.”
Rowan bristled. “No way. This place is a haunted place. I can feel it. There’s no way I’m - ”
“Rowan!” you shouted loudly.
Startled, Rowan blinked.
Quietly, you whispered, “Please. For my sake.”
Rowan struggled, gritting his teeth. He started to reach for your hand again, but then he jerked his hand back, as if he’d been burnt. Finally, he burst out, “Come on! Be reasonable. How the hell can I leave you here? I know you’ve been struggling against the Nine-Tailed Fox lately. In fact, you’ve nearly lost yourself to her already. This strange place is her arena, isn’t it? My father always said never to underestimate a creature in their own habitat. So how am I supposed to know you’re going to be all right without me?”
“Because,” you pushed back, “it’s not for you to be all right about, Rowan. The Nine-Tailed Fox… Well, she’s always been my dream, and this is my journey. You… You have no place in it. I don’t mean to sound cruel. I don’t mean to hurt you. But it’s true. That’s why I need you to go.”
Rowan was completely still for a second. Then, he asked, “What are you planning to do?”
You didn’t say anything aloud to Rowan, but in your mind, you resolved, I’m going to let the succubus devour my soul. Then, with the succubus satiated, the Nine-Tailed Fox will continue living as her true self once more.
Do you understand what you are saying? the Nine-Tailed Fox called out urgently in your head. You will die!
But you will survive, you replied to the Fox. And with you alive, this mythological world will continue, as desolate as it may seem.
Why do you care? the Fox wondered. You’ll be gone.
Your eyes slowly began to glimmer with tears, as you confessed to her, Whether it’s Rowan or Remus or you, the Nine-Tailed Fox herself, no one in this world will ever understand how lonely I was when I was younger, and what solace it brought me to believe in the world of myth. A world where even strange creatures can be free and glory in their own beings…
I want that world to continue. In fact, I want it to be vibrant, even if I’m no longer around to see it. That way, if there’s anyone like me in the real world, their crazy beliefs will be real, and that fact in itself will bring dignity to that person’s soul. There will be such a thing as ‘beauty’ attached even to the most far-fetched things…
The Fox was quiet. Then, with a soft sigh, she whispered tenderly, I’m sorry you were so lonely.
It’s all right, you told her. I know that… well… You looked up at Rowan. Now I know that I wasn’t ever totally alone. Somebody did care for me, all that time.
“What…?” Rowan murmured, catching your gaze.
“You have to go,” you whispered. You stepped forward and pushed Rowan back. When your hands came up against his chest, tears dropped from your eyes and splashed on Rowan’s hands, for he had reached out to you.
“But what are you planning to do once I leave?” Rowan asked you, both scolding and pleading with you. He grabbed your shoulder. “I won’t leave until you give me an answer.”
You blinked up at him. A strand of blue hair caught on your tear-stained cheek.
You reached up and tugged it away from your face. As your fingers slipped through your blue hair, you murmured, “I’m going to make sure that this world continues to exist.”
“This world - The Nine-Tailed Fox’s world?”
“Yes.”
“And… that’s all?” Rowan’s brow furrowed. He didn’t quite understand what you were saying, so he ended up just repeating what you had said. “You’re just going to ensure that it survives?”
You nodded.
Rowan still felt quite uneasy, but he didn’t know what else he could do. He instinctively knew that what you said was true – this was your journey and he had come with you as far as he could. And yet…
You took Rowan’s hand off of your shoulder. You kissed his fingertips briefly and then you let go.
“Go, Rowan. The door is right there.” You pointed up to the top of the hillside.
Rowan gazed at you for a beat longer. Then, with a slight cough, he began to make his way back up the hillside.
Just before he reached the golden line, he turned back and looked at you. He hesitated. He swore there was a shadow behind you… of a woman with long, raven-black hair and blood-red lips…
You lifted your hand and you smiled as you waved at him.
Rowan nodded once. Then, he turned and pushed his hand through the golden slit. The world whirled and Rowan was sent back to the real world. And any chance you had of escaping this world alive went with him.
*     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *
As soon as Rowan was gone, you turned around.
You glared fiercely at the succubus, who was standing there, dressed in her silver robes with red roses stitched all across it. She stared at you with sharp, hungry eyes.
“Come to me,” she hissed. “If we cannot have his soul, let us have yours.”
“I already said you could devour me,” you acknowledged. “But I didn’t say I would make it easy for you.”
You lifted your wand and shouted, “Incendio!” A blast of fire burst out of your wand.
The succubus howled and stumbled back, shielding her face from the singeing fire.
Next, you cried out, “Expecto Patronum!”
A pale blue Nine-Tailed Fox erupted from the end of your wand and leapt forth.
By now, the succubus was back on her feet. You watched as her fingernails grew into claws and blood began to drip from her sharp, glaring eyes.
“I have been hungry for too long,” the succubus whispered. “Don’t you understand? I was born because that Nine-Tailed Fox couldn’t control her own emotions! It’s only natural for me to want to devour souls!”
“I know that,” you muttered grimly. “And when you defeat me, I’ll let you eat my soul. But it would be disrespectful of me to lay down so easily, after all of the people who helped me survive so far!”
You pointed your wand at the succubus and yelled, “Go!”
Your Patronus growled fearsomely and then bounded forward.
At the same time, you shouted, “Incendio Maximus!”
A halo of fire blasted forth.
The succubus used her fingertip to draw a crimson circle in the air. A transparent, glowing red shield appeared before her. Your Patronus scratched at the shield, but it did not break.
The succubus then ducked the halo of fire you had sent her way. In a whoosh of dark wind, the succubus managed to flash forward directly in front of you.
Staring down at you, she whispered, “Fine. You tried. Now die.”
With that sentiment, she struck a violent blow, piercing your chest with her sharp, long nails.
You screamed out in horror and pain as you felt your chest being gouged into. Your Patronus leapt onto the succubus’ shoulders and buried its fangs into her head, forcing her to back away.
However, the damage had already been done. You fell backwards into the glistening, white snow. Crimson spattered the ground besides you.
As your eyes closed, your Patronus, with a soft, sad whimper, flickered out. The Patronus’ tails disappeared, one by one.
Nine, eight, seven…
Child, let me help! I can fight against the succubus, the Nine-Tailed Fox, who was still tied to the hollow within your soul, begged to you.
No, you choked out, you… stay… you stay inside me until she’s gone. You have to survive.
Six, five, four…
The Fox howled in anguish. In a pained whisper, she wondered, You’re leaving me, too? Why is it that I always have to survive? I’m tired of legacy…
You breathed out wearily. Your vision was almost completely dark, only you could make out a few snowflakes skittering across your vision.
So, this is what you meant when you said you weren’t free, you realized. The expectations that everyone has left behind, the prison that you accidentally entrapped yourself in, your own loneliness… You’ve trapped, too.
Just then, the succubus leaned over you and opened her fanged mouth. All you saw was a pitch-black vortex leading into her hellish soul.
You don’t have to miss me, though, you told the Fox wryly. I’m just a human.
Three,
Two,
One.

foxy i have a very serious questions … how can you possibly keep your laptop organized with the million & one stories you’re writing/have written/just randomly occurred to you!! I have so much less than you on my laptop but I’m still constantly losing documents so I can’t imagine how you do it 😭
Ok this is SUPER NERDY but here you go:
So many nested folders!! I have this on google drive and mirrored on my laptop and an external harddrive; I mostly work in google docs but every few weeks do a manual backup of everything onto my laptop and an external harddrive.
Ok let me see how to illustrate this in a way that won't be confusing. There are definitely other ways I could configure this (I'm even thinking things as I type this up haha) but this current set up is what lets me jump around most easily between the files I am actively writing, editing, and posting from, usually multiple different stories on any given day. I have to strike the balance between very organized and not having too many annoying click throughs.
World/Theme/Type of writing (that A Catch All Writing is my BTS writing) are the top level folders. Like this:
Tumblr media
All the writing I don't post yet or abandoned or just never got far on is here, either as individual files or as its own folder if there's an obvious grouping (hybrid stories, for instance, or a single folder for multi-chapter stories). I probably should go through here and organize things better but since this is all abandoned stuff, I don't spend much time here. The important folder is that Posting folder ('A Catch All Writing' is my BTS folder):
Tumblr media
The Posting folder is where all the stories I am actively writing and/or posting live. It looks like this right now:
Tumblr media
The DONE folder has all my long stories that are completed UNLESS they are part of an ongoing series (Birdtan, Sasha, Lowlander) and then they live in their own nested folder under the series folder so I can share reference files and easily access if I need to look something up. My DONE folder:
Tumblr media
compared to Birdtan folder with a done story in it:
Tumblr media
You'll notice most of the short stories I've posted aren't there though. All the short stories I write live in that Short Stories folder higher up--they get moved to a subfolder within there once they are posted/done so they're only one click away. If they turn into a multi-chapter story or need additional notes/inspiration/whatever docs, I pull them out to the higher level so they can have their own folder (like Tell Me What Changed.)
There's defintiely some messines with what's in the Short Stories folder and what's in that further back high level "everything" folder --both have docs where I throw down notes or outlines or start ideas. I try to keep the Short Stories folder focused on things I am actively or in the near term writing but files do get moved between those a lot as my inspiration changes.
Tumblr media
Short stories also have their own DONE folder so it's quick and easy to drag things into there, and because sometimes the posting doc (+ a pdf version for patreon) are just a portion of another file, like with amended shorts, sugar fairy shorts, etc.
Within any story I'm writing, I organize its folder pretty much the same way too:
An outline file
Reference docs, photos, spreadsheets --characters, timelines, dates, etc.
raw Writing files
and Editing/Posting files I copy and paste the content from the Writing file into the Posting file and that's where I edit and format. This way I still have stuff that gets cut during editing, so I can always go back if I change my mind later or feel like I messed something up during editing or I just want to reuse stuff from the cutting room floor for a different story.
Tumblr media
I keep about 100 pages of writing per file. I've learned previously that the docs start to chug once they get over 1000 pages, and this also makes it a little big easier for me to jump around and find things if need be. I used to include a key reference in the title to make it easier to "find myself" in time in the story if I'm looking for a particular event. I haven't been doing this lately but I should, it's really useful. Example:
Tumblr media
The Z in the title is just so it got moved to the bottom of the file folder, so visually everythign I'm actively working on is at the top and the things I'm "done" with are at the bottom. That's really only important to me in stories like the Sasha stuff where there are literally over a hundred docs.
Let's see what else... for brainstorming, I have a single excel sheet I dump ideas into unless I have enough to start putting together a few paragraphs or an outline, and then it gets promoted to its own word doc.
And then for archiving old stuff, I sort by year of the last time I worked on something. So say I decide I'm all done writing BTS stories, I'd just drag the whole folder into a 2022 folder into my Writing Archive folder, for the last year I worked on things in that space. That helps me find things later, if I'm like oooh what about that idea I was working on in high school...
This is what's in my google drive, but most of my archived stuff isn't there, it's on my laptop and my harddrive. They have files going back to the last century 😁
Tumblr media
Unfortunately I've lost a lot of my oldest stuff, largely because technology and data systems have changed so much since I started writing by hand in journals. I'm stil in the process of typing up old things from journals, and unfortuantely not everythign survived my floppy discs (YEAH THAT WAS TECHNOLOGY BACK THEN).
So this is my system! :) Sorry I nerded out, it was actually really fun to take stock of it. I'm in these files literally every day, so organization is really important! Now I'm going to go do some reorganizing looool.

I was suddenly without internet for a while, so there was no release last week, but everything is back to normal now, and I had a great couple weeks' work. The 'edit times' dialog can now handle multiple files.
full changelog
editing times for multiple files at once
If you launch 'edit times' on a single file, everything is the same. If you open it on a larger selection, it will now show, in a summarised way, the range of each particular time type, and how many files in the selection have or do not have a time set there. The controls all work as before, but in general, when you set a time, all files are now locked to that new time. Give it a play and you'll see how it all works.
SInce we don't always want to set exactly the same time to a set of files, but rather ideally a similar, staggered time, there is also a new 'cascade step' system in the multiple file version of the dialog. Every time-edit you open up has the ability to enter a little step, say 100ms, which will cause the dialog to set each successive file in the selection to be that much later (or earlier, negative values are allowed!) than the last. This way, if you have a bunch of files of something contiguous, like a comic chapter, that all have different, merged, or otherwise awkward import times, you can now manually sort them in the UI using tags or hackery and apply a new import time based on the first file plus a few milliseconds each time. Thereafter, any time you sort those files by import time, they'll also be nicely in page order time, just as if you had imported them all together from one directory.
I am quite happy with the new dialog, and I plan to copy some of the new techniques I figured out to other dialogs for similar better multi-file handling. I'd also really like, as we have discussed before, to tackle a 'cascading' tagger in 'manage tags', so we can quickly set 'page:n' tags to many files at once.
misc
In v559, it turns out I did make a '54 years ago' mistake, on moving files from one local file domain to another. This is fixed, and on database update, any borked timestamps that were saved should be corrected too. Let me know if you encounter any more issues.
Mr Bones and the File History Chart are now under the database menu.
There's a new checkbox under 'files and trash', 'Remove files from view when they are moved to another local file domain'. This actually re-introduces the unintended behaviour we had a couple weeks ago, which was happening under 'remove when trashed', but targeted to the correct logical trigger.
The gallery downloader cog button now has a 'don't add new dupes' option, which discards the query_text/source pairs you add if they are already in the download list. If you need to paste a hundred queries from a big mishmash list, I think this will help.
As a very brief test, I've added 'sort files by pixel hash'. If you have some pixel hashes in your current query, this will make them stand out, but the rest of the sort data is meaningless. I had wanted to try out some similar hacky new tech with 'sort by perceptual hash', but thumbnails don't have quick access to that data yet, so it'll have to wait.
I wasn't sure when my internet was going to come back up, so I dumped a bunch of time into some longer cleanup jobs. There's a ton of updated code behind the scenes, particularly around the way files get informed about new metadata, but nothing you need to care about. I have some new plans here and can see the path to getting all sorts of new metadata commands integrated into the shortcut and undo systems. I changed a couple thousand lines, so there may be a typo bug somewhere--let me know if you try to set any unusual content changes and it throws an error!
next week
Now we have tech that relies on file order, I think it is time we get the ability to conveniently reorder thumbnails. This will also help when I figure out cascading tagging in 'manage tags'. I'd love to have reordering by simple drag and drop, but that may be too complicated to slip into one week. I'll see what I can do.
I have quite a few messages to catch up on, which I will try to tackle Saturday.
