Support the folks who make the content we crave

Producer of QL and BL content, Korea's Strongberry is small but scrappy and brought the world a lot more content than you might expect. The CEO had a live session a little while ago, and it was reposted with English subtitles yesterday. Among the takeaways: they have a lot more interest from actors than they used to. Also, some of the content they have distributed was produced by others but needed a distribution outlet, so they are clearly a part of the ecosystem that might not otherwise exist.

It's nice and short, and he says there will be a live session with the actors during March (date TBD). Watch this and drive up the stats! Make their investors realize they have a great audience! 😀

What I thought Bed Friend was going to be: high heat series about a cold young man and a player who had to prove himself trustworthy of more than a casual lay

What Bed Friend actually is about: a seriously abused and traumatized young man attempts to embrace his slut era by entering into a monogamous friends with benefits relationship with the local office player who's been in love with him forever and learns how to be loved and embrace his own sexuality, passion, fears and hope after being cheated on by a scumbag.

I love this show.

*gets up on soapbox* Ahem…

BLs and GLs ARE queer media! By placing an arbitrary condition on what is considered a QL and what is considered queer media, you are making it harder for actual queer writers and directors (especially from Asia) to be taken seriously in the film and television industry, which allows Westerners to get away with saying things like this! ⬇️

That is a cis white aroace woman saying that the stories of gay men, written by gay men and directed by gay men, don’t count as legitimate queer media because the stories happen to feature messy adult things such as *checks notes* sex… yep, sex.

Am I saying that Heartstoppers needs sex in it? No! Of course not, Heartstopper is wonderful just as it is. Alice is an openly sex-repulsed asexual aromantic, of course she doesn’t want to write messy sex into her stuff. But her claiming that BLs basically fetishize gay culture when she herself is not a gay person, is not her choice to make.

We need to stop saying QLs are separate from queer media, it’s not, it’s a genre of queer media. It’s a genre that the queer community can’t get out of western Hollywood, it a genre that promises you that if you watch this show that you will see a gay protagonist. Not a toss away side character, not some terrible walking stereotype that’s doomed by the narrative, that is destined to die because they’re queer and being queer and happy in Hollywood is not allowed. No, the QL genre promises us that we will see someone we can connect to, we will see someone who represents us, we will see love between people that are not fucking blonde haired, blued eyed, heterosexual, Nicholas Sparks protagonists! The QL genre promises us that no matter what, we will see queer happiness at some point and in a world that is so ugly towards the LGBTQ community, that tiny bit of happiness, however fleeting, is so important.

So please, remember, QLs ARE Queer Media.

And for the love god, never forget the voices behind your media 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Framboise (played by Kaji Masaki) is probably my favorite side character of 2022. In a year of great older queer men in genre, from Mork’s uncles Cheep and Dej in My Ride to Uncle Man in 21 Days Theory, I’m so glad we got Framboise as well. In Framboise we see a self-actualized gay man that literally lights up the room with his energy. He is what I aspire to be in a gay elder.

When Framboise first appears, it is in a burst of sunlight and flowers as he enters the convention floor. He’s excited to see other creators, and thrilled to be near another queer creator who he’s clearly admired for a long time. Framboise is determined to get Nekoyashiki to join them at the after party for other queer artists. Though he’s constantly rebuffed (and expresses his frustration vocally), he doesn’t give up on or abandon Nekoyashiki.

Framboise, like any sort of manga/anime character, has a clear and specific style. What I love so much about him is that he is more indicative of what so many gay men actually look like. We have facial hair. Some of us are chubby. We like for our clothes to fit well. So much of what I love about Framboise’s style is how it fits with his physicality.

His joy when he moves around is about being in the space with everyone. He’s not flashing his clothes to impress others; those are the clothes that make him feel most like himself. It’s such a joy to see a heavy-set character happy and comfortable in his skin in a BL, especially one that’s older.

Like many of us, Framboise thrives on queer community so much that he takes any offerings of kindness from Mamoru for the big deals that they are. He was so surprised in the middle of the series that he was overwhelmed with love and fell down. Like many of us, we can all appreciate the attention of an attractive younger man, and yet it mostly stops at play.

In the finale, we get to see Mamoru finally relax himself enough to be open to Framboise, and can finally receive directly the unconditional love of another queer person who cares about you. It’s big and it’s joyous and it is offered in behind the back hug that takes you off your feet.

Framboise isn’t happy for Mamoru because of specific success (exemplified by Takkun), he’s happy that Mamoru finally drew something he was happy with. As a queer elder, it’s such a joy to see a baby gay figure themself out and finally appear comfortable in their skin; conversely, Framboise displays how genuine appreciation for being seen earnestly. Mamoru knows that he’s appreciated.

As we reflect on the future of BL, I will be writing about Cheep, Dej, Man, and Framboise again, because this was the first year that queer elders really contributed to my enjoyment of the genre. I hope Framboise is the beginning of us seeing older queers having joyous lives in our dramas.

The worst part is that Dean thinks he's helping, he's being a good friend, he's being supportive but he doesn't understand the depth of pain and fear and anxiety that Team and Win share. Dean was hoping for a sweet answer, something straightforward, something kind. But he got Team's answer instead and that answer is the plainest truth tempered with a fear of lose and a fear of overstepping.

Dean asks a question expecting the kind of answer Pharm gives but gets what Team gives and you can watch him regret the question in real time.

Do you ever think about the queer media of the distant future that you won’t be alive to consume?

Like imagine all the reboots that will be made 50, 100, + years from now.

They’ll probably remake the entire marvel cinematic universe or star wars or lord of the rings but canonically gay this time and we won’t be around to see it. There’s gonna be actually queer Disney movies. Netflix’s successor will host full length 16 episode QL kdramas. China will finally release Immortality or even remake The Untamed with more than just subtext.

And I won’t get to watch any of it.

I’m sad.
