"ah, i'm so sorry!" you yell and slam the door shut, the glass clutched in your hands threatening to tip over and spill over you. your hands are quivering, and your heart is racing at a million miles per hour while your brain tries to process what just happened. you had just wanted to pass KAZUHA a drink, the new blend of coffee you had been experimenting with and he had agreed to taste. but then, after knocking on his room door and receiving no answer, you had decided to let yourself in anyway - the two of you had been friends for ages, what was there to hide anyway? that was what you thought two seconds ago, but apparently the answer was himself; you had accidentally walked in on him changing!

archons, this is so embarrassing, he probably thinks you're some kind of creepy pervert. you bury your face in your hands, but your traitorous mind keeps flashing back to the sight of KAZUHA's bare back. his muscles had been rippling slightly as he stretched in front of the mirror, one hand reaching for his shirt, which had been unceremoniously tossed onto his chair. a small constellation of freckles dotted his left shoulder, and you briefly wonder what it would be like to trail kisses across that mark before scolding yourself for having such thoughts. if that wasn't bad enough, your imagination begins wandering to what KAZUHA's back would look like with angry red scratches tracing down it, the aftermath of a night filled with passion. that's even worse! now you can't get all sorts of unholy images to be erased from your mind, and your face is so hot you think you're about to explode.

thankfully, at that exact moment, KAZUHA opens the door, a smile gracing his expression when he notices you still standing there. the tuft of red hair you've daydreamed about running your fingers through falls in front of his eyes, a sharp contrast to the rest of his snow white hair, and you fight the urge not to tuck it away behind his ear. "oh, is that the coffee you told me about?" your roommate asks coolly, as if nothing had happened. not trusting yourself to formulate a coherent reply, you nod. as he takes the glass from you, a playful smirk dances across his lips, "did you like what you saw?" "what?!" heat rushes to your face, and you're sure your jaw is on the floor. "don't think it was free though," KAZUHA pretends to frown, before leaning forward and planting his lips on yours. you're pretty sure you're the epitome of that one emoji with the brain exploding. yup, your system is completely fried from KAZUHA's kiss - how are his lips so soft?!

when he pulls away, he looks at you, chuckling at your surprised expression before winking, "don't worry, i accept payments in kisses." he darts into his room for a second before coming back and pressing a small chocolate into your hand; a hershey's kiss. "and here's yours! we should do this again sometime," KAZUHA grins before slipping back into his room, as if he didn't just steal your breath with the best kiss you've ever had, and then proceed to be audacious enough to give you a chocolate to tease you. you shake your head aggressively, trying to clear your thoughts, an unsurprisingly difficult endeavour, when all your head is filled with are thoughts of KAZUHA's lips against yours - are you really falling for your roommate? as you ponder opening the door again just to ask if KAZUHA can kiss once more, you think that the answer is a resounding yes.

"you are so beautiful to me," the words slip easily, truthfully from kazuha's lips, his breath warm against your ear. from behind you, he embraces your figure in an affectionate hug, chin resting on your shoulder as the two of you gaze at your reflection in the gleaming mirror. his hand fiddles with the hem of your outfit, caressing your bare skin underneath the material and prompting a soft giggle to bubble up from your throat from the action. he presses a fleeting butterfly kiss to your neck, and you lean back into his touch as yet another honest compliment falls from kazuha's lips like a maple leaf in autumn, "in comparison to you, even the beauty of the moon wanes."

"you are so beautiful to me," kazuha murmurs, his strong arms wrapping around you and holding you tight, like he's your lighthouse amidst a stormy sea. his voice never wavers, the words comforting you and washing away your insecurities and sadness. it hurts, but he's there for you, and you know kazuha won't let you struggle alone anymore. he is there for you, even on these awful nights when nightmares leave you wide awake and gasping for breath. your tears are wiped away with a caring swipe of his thumb across your cheeks, and he tilts your face to look at him. crimson eyes maintaining a piercing gaze, kazuha presses a kiss onto your forehead and continues his sentence, "both inside and out."

"you are so beautiful to me," the words are hushed when kazuha says them, speaking in a quiet voice that's almost shy. it's past midnight, and your eyes keep threatening to slide shut even though the memory of what happened mere minutes ago still sends warmth rushing to your face. his hand dances across your bare shoulder, fingers illustrating constellations on your skin and leaving a trail of searing heat in their wake - you wonder if he's doing it on purpose. a gentle smile curves his lips as he looks at you, cheeks still slightly flushed, and you're sure he's thinking about it too. kazuha leans closer and kisses your plush lips, but this kiss isn't filled with passion like earlier, rather it's a loving kiss, one of sweetness and innocence telling you, "i'm so grateful i met you."

"you are so beautiful to me," kazuha says, his hand tracing down your cheek, his voice barely audible but it's okay because it's just the two of you and you can hear everything he's saying perfectly fine even over the roar of thunder. ruby blood is spattered across his face, as are cuts and bruises like sick trophies of the fight the two of just won. mud stains your clothes and your sleeve is torn, you're sure you've never looked worse but it doesn't matter because you're beautiful to him. you tilt your head, trying to ignore the way kazuha's eyes are clouding over, but you know there's no hope anymore, no matter how much you attempt to convince yourself he'll be okay. his eyes glimmer with unshed tears, mourning the loss of the life he could have had with you, the life he wanted to have with you, the life that's being ripped away from him right now. the ring in his pocket feels oddly heavy for something so small. kazuha's hand cups your face, even though the very motion has his muscles screaming at him to stop moving, "i love you."

"you are so beautiful to me," you whisper through sobs, brushing away his bangs to kiss his forehead, pretending the reason his face is wet is because of the rain sluicing down from the sky in buckets and not your tears as you let your lips linger there for far too long. he smiles up at you and you clutch his hand that's still on your cheek while a million pleas threaten to fall from your lips. stay with me, i need you. but he can't, and you know that. with a heavy heart threatening to crack into infinite shards, you kiss kazuha one final time, "i love you too."

a flash of lightning illuminates the purple inazuman sky, the last of the dying sunlight sinking into the unforgiving ocean. barely a second later, harsh thunder booms, and kaedehara kazuha is gone.

- you wonder if you are still beautiful to him when you weep over his corpse, your eyes reddened from crying, the wind whipping around and howling in your ears just like the echoing memory of his voice.

lightning streaks through the stormy clouds, a jagged flash of blinding white threatening to rip the sky in half. rain pours down mercilessly from the heavens, almost seeming furious with the intensity with which they sting your sky, blurring your vision as you clutch your sword tightly. the wooden planks of the dock beneath you creak loudly, appearing ready to crack underfoot from how much they've rotted over time. kazuha's white hair with its familiar vein of red stands out against the darkness surrounding you both, giving you the impression of an angel as he looks out the monstrous waves crashing repeatedly onto the shore with an indescribable expression. "we're finally leaving," he says, unperturbed by the strength of the wind howling around the two of you. his hand still aches from the burn he received from his friend's dying vision, that much you can tell from how he keeps it sheathed in the soft material of his clothes. yet suddenly, he pushes you aside and tilts his head, just in time for an arrow to go whizzing past both of you, so close it nearly grazes your arm. kazuha sighs, eyes beginning to gleam as red as rubies in the inky night, "i should have known the shogun wouldn't let our passage be that easy."

the two of you whip your weapons out, though you don't miss how kazuha winces, his hand still hurting from the injury. "leave them to me, 'zuha. get on the boat," you instruct, gesturing to the small boat besides you that's rocking violently from the motion of the waves. your boyfriend's expression tenses, "no, i can't do that! i'm not going to leave you here!" you lean closer to him, cupping his face with one hand while the other grips the hilt of your sword tightly. searching his coppery eyes, you press a kiss against his lips, "i love you, 'zuha. and you know me, i'll find a way to you." kazuha's gaze meets yours as raindrops soak his face and trickle down his cheeks, mimicking the tears he never lets fall no matter how much he mourns, and he whispers so softly you can barely catch it over the sound of thunder cracking, "i don't want to lose anyone anymore." "you won't be losing me, 'zuha. c'mon, don't you believe in how you taught me to fight?" you chuckle, nuzzling against his cheek to try a coax a smile out of him, even as the sound of the kanjobugyo draws ever closer. "please, come back to me," he murmurs under his breath, cursing his wound a million times over and hoping against hope that you'll succeed and somehow make it back to him in one piece, "i love you." "i promise, and i love you too, kazuha. now go!" you kiss him once more, embracing the passion and urgency of the action before running off with a wave. kazuha can only watch helplessly as you run off into the fray, his little boat set to sail away into the intimidating ocean from the force with which you kicked it after untying the thread docking it to the pier.

"y/n, you have committed severe treachery against inazuma. surrender immediately, and your punishment will be lessened," the voice of kujou sara states coolly, one hand caressing her sword. "bla bla bla, whatever. i'm not planning on surrendering anytime soon," you retort, "plus, isn't surrendering going against inazuma's entire principle of eternity?" sara's eyes widen slightly at your impertinence, but she quickly schools her expression back into one of normalcy, "where is kaedehara kazuha? he has been declared a wanted criminal." "kazuha? oh, he's long gone," you curl your lips into a smirk as surprise washes over her face from your lie. you just need to stall long enough for kazuha to get away, that's it. "that means he has disobeyed the sakoku decree, and you too are guilty for assisting him. upon being taken into custody, you will be separated from your vision per the orders of the immortal shogun," sara quickly says, her gaze darting to the gleaming vision at your hip. your sword glitters as you infuse it with elemental energy and prepare yourself for a battle, "aw, that isn't very nice of her, is it? giving the gift of a vision only to take it away. rather rude, if you ask me." "y/n, you don't have to do this. if you submit to us and hand over your vision, we don't need to resort to violence," sara gives one final attempt at neutralising the situation, but you aren't changing your mind. from your peripheral vision, you realise that kazuha's boat isn't visible anymore, which means he should be in international waters by now, where the laws of inazuma are no longer applied. whispering a silent prayer up to celestia, you beam, "i'm not going down without a fight. if you want my vision, come and get it." and as a dozen kanjobugyo soldiers rush at you, you know there's no chance you're getting out of here alive, so you're left with nothing to do except offer an apology to kazuha for breaking your promise and toss your vision into the air with all your strength - even in your last moments you refuse to let the tyrannical ruler win.

kazuha's sitting down in his boat, enjoying the peace of the sunny day that has come after the horrific storm, although there's a knot in his stomach he can't quite quell, no matter how much he tries to stay positive. his mind keeps wandering to thoughts of you and your safety, even as he tries to think about how much fun he'll have when you meet him in liyue. at least until something drops out of the sky into his lap, and when he sees what it is his heart sinks into his chest. it's a vision which he instinctively knows is yours, but would have recognised anyway from the initials you carved onto the corner. it's truly a miracle it managed to reach him, like your dying wish had propelled its energy all the way across the sea. almost as if it knows it has reached its target, the vision fizzles softly, sparks flying off it as the colour begins to fade.

and that's when kazuha finally lets himself cry, because he knows you'll never come back to him now.

the art room is serene, silent except for the sound of kazuha's brush swirling in the paint and gliding across the easel with the grace of a ballerina. the sun has already begun to set, the pink and yellow hues flooding the classroom with its radiance, dappling your skin with gold. the gentle wind rustles the branches of the tree outside, whispering through the leaves as if eager to share some merry secret. you merely remain still, frozen on the mahogany chair as if a statue, while kazuha works to capture your likeness onto the canvas in front of him.

you gaze at your boyfriend, watching how his brows knit in concentration, how his coppery eyes are laser focused. when he glances up at you for reference before returning to the canvas, a red blush splashes itself across his pale cheeks upon realising you were already looking at him. warm affection blossoms in his eyes, as they quickly dart back to the easel to hide how flustered he is.

tilting your head to the side, you utter, "you're so pretty, you know that, 'zuha?" his ears burn at both the praise and the nickname slipping from your mouth like a gem - it sounds so familiar, so loving, so caring. "pretty? i think that applies more to you, angel," kazuha smiles, pushing his hair out of his face, concealing the streak of red that usually falls perfectly to frame his face.

kazuha's pet name never fails to get your heart racing, and you beam at him, "can i come see the picture now?" he hums under his breath, shooting one last glance at the painting before nodding, "sure. it still needs a bit of work though." hopping off the chair, you stretch, cat-like, and skip to his side. upon seeing the marvellous artwork, your jaw drops, and a low gasp escapes your throat as your eyes trace the careful sketched linework, now covered with a layers of paint in all the shades you could imagine.

it's you posing on the chair, and even in the still image kazuha has somehow managed to portray how you're bubbling over with life and excitement, each stroke filled with vibrancy. "do you like it?" kazuha asks softly, one hand wrapping around your waist to pull you close. "i love it, kazuha! archons, your artwork is always stunning," you reply with enthusiasm in your tone, hugging him tightly. "thank you, y/n. i'm glad you like it," he grins, the pride from your compliment obvious in his expression.

reaching one finger out, you caress the canvas, "it looks so real!" kazuha chuckles before cupping your chin and pressing his lips to yours in a warm kiss, "maybe. but no piece of art in the world can beat you, because none of them can do this."

the sun has just begun to dip below the horizon, the last of its warm rays splashing gold hues across the pastel sky. a gentle summer breeze whistles softly, curling around you like a the familiar warmth of a hug from your lover. you're standing at the docks of liyue, gazing absently at the ships, or more specifically the crux, the magnificent fleet captained by none other than beidou, and also the fleet that your boyfriend, kazuha will be leaving on today.

the feeling of an arm wrapping around your waist jolts you out of your thoughts, and you tilt your head up to be met with kazuha's lips curved into a sad smile. you turn around, burying your head in his chest, unsure of how to convey what you're feeling. in the end you settle for asking, "do you really have to leave?" kazuha sighs, lifting your knuckles to kiss them, "i wish i didn't have to. but i don't want you to get hurt. if i stay here for too long, the inazuma guards might find me, and they might take you too."

you know he's right, but it doesn't make his departure ache any less. what's worse is that you don't know when he'll come back, or if he even will. the ocean obeys no one, not even the formidable captain beidou, and storms can wreck even the strongest of ships in a second by dashing them on razor sharp rocks or pulling them down into the darkest depths where they'll never be seen again. you're terrified that kazuha will just disappear, swallowed up by a monster of the sea.

kazuha rubs comforting circles on the small of your back as he nuzzles into your neck, inhaling your scent and memorising it to revisit while he's away. "oi, kaedehara! get over here, we're about to leave soon. captain's orders," a voice yells from aboard the ship, smashing through your quiet tryst. you're gripping onto kazuha's shirt, silently begging him not to leave, and his pale crimson eyes, almost the same colour as the coppery bloodstains on the floor he has seen from his time at inazuma, fill with longing. he wants so desperately to stay, but this is for the both of you and the future he wants to build with you someday.

"hey, look at me," he murmurs, caressing your cheek while you lean into his touch as your brain scrambles to ingrain this in your mind forever. parting really is such sweet sorrow, you idly think. kazuha peels your hand off his shirt and drops something into your open palm before folding your fingers to close on it, "take care of this for me, alright?" pressing a final kiss on your forehead, kazuha quickly boards the ship waiting for him, and you bid him goodbye with as much encouragement as you can muster.

"i love you!" you shout into the distance, cupping your hands around your mouth to amplify your volume. you imagine your boyfriend smiling as he hears it, and suddenly recall the item he slipped into your hands. unclasping your fingers, you glance downwards, only to be met with a single maple leaf, the same shade as the streak running through kazuha's snowy hair. you're more grateful than words can express for the simple gift which almost feels like a part of him left in your caring hands, and vow to keep it safe.

and as stars begin to blanket the navy quilt of the night sky, you offer up a prayer to the archons to protect kazuha, clutching the leaf to your heart.
