One of the cool things about Matilda at this age is helping her practice the ability to calm herself down and take a nap when she's tired. Her natural habit is to keep going well past the point of exhaustion and play or work or explore until she's a totally overwhelmed little ball of teeth. For obvious reasons, that's not ideal! I expect to have to enforce naptime later as she grows, but I'm trying to help lay some good groundwork for those self regulation skills as early as we can.
We're mostly practicing impulse control and focus games right now ("it's your choice," the name game, some baby dremeling of nails). But this kind of stuff is equally important and very cool to watch forming. She's a remarkably earnest little dog--even before she came home she stood out from her littermates for inquisitively sitting and watching the humans to see if anyone wanted anything out of her--and I want to make sure she gets to learn how to signal boundaries as she ages, too.

Having a puppy is one of the most tiring but rewarding things ever.
It's amazing to me how she literally grows overnight.
She's a very smol girl so I have to take her out every 3-4 hours and she feels larger and heavier every time.

writing this down for my own reference, since i've realized i can't remember shit about stellina's puppy phases: grading Kepler on how he鈥檚 been progressing over the past month (8 - 13 weeks):
food (drive, appetite, sensitivity): 馃煝 loves to eat, very motivated but not frantic/pica-esque, no GI upset so far
leash walking: 馃煝 doing really well on both flat collar and harness.
sleeping: 馃煝/馃煛 - GREAT at night, sleeps for a solid 8-9 hours. during the day seems to fight against tiredness and naps very lightly, then gets cranky/overtired.
crating: 馃煝/馃敶 - GREAT at night. during the day he'll load up happily into the crate but has issues actually settling/sleeping. need to figure out where the discrepancy is coming from.
potty training: 馃敶 this boy be pissin
general training: 馃煝 loves loves looooves being trained, super focused. knows sit, come, crate, nose target, paw target. working on a down and stay/leave it currently.
manners: 馃煝/馃煛 good about not biting, takes treats nicely, generally listens to my verbal warnings, isn't destructive. he is starting to demand bark/jump up on me, which we're working on curbing.
grooming: 馃煝/馃煛 needs to be distracted with food but he's tolerated a bath, nail dremeling, brushing, tooth brushing, and ear cleaning. due for another bath soon so we'll see how that goes.
cars: 馃煛 whiny but does ok on car rides. no car sickness.
outings/socialization: 馃煝 has done really well in new environments, very engaged and curious but doesn't get overwhelmed. have gotten spooked a few times but recovered well.
other dogs: 馃煛 very dog-focused (typical for puppy, he may grow out of it), doesn't bark or get frantic but he has a hard time shifting attention from them. does listen to stern corrections, but tends to bulldoze through more gentle ones - plays overly rough and has to be separated from stellina frequently.
other people: 馃煝 friendly and curious and loves to meet people, but focusing pretty well when i ask him to ignore. did good around a small child but was a little wary of being approached too fast, which is normal.
small animals: 馃煝 curious and excited about the cat but not obsessive, called away easily. will chase squirrels and birds but not intensely.
overall i'd give him a 馃煝 with a few caveats (really need to work on daytime settling/crating, and god please make any sort of progress with house training). my overall impression is that he's confident and stable, with a little more innate caution than stellina but conversely he also doesn't get overwhelmed nearly as easily - less impulsive and more resilient, which has both pros and cons. i'll repeat this in another month and i'm very curious to see how he progresses as he starts growing out of the generic-puppy personality.

Does Pichael ever bark/growl? In all the videos I鈥檝e seen of her, she鈥檚 so quiet. Yes, this is me asking for a video of her being loud.
Pigroast is a vocal dog but she isn't very loud. She does minimal alert barking (we live in an apartment) and mostly just growls/grumbles. She has been highly encouraged to roo-roo but it's not a consistent behaviour, and there is plenty of play growling while scrumbling.
The absolute worst sound she makes is a high pitched shriek that is directed at any friend out of reach. It was reserved for super legit friends but has expanded to people she suspects are friends. It's become worse recently (as she's made more friends) and a big work in progress.
I thought I had more videos that included her noises but this is the only clip at the moment.
EDIT: Omfg I forgot to say this kid absolutely loves to just sit and squeak toys. It only lasts about a day and then she kills the squeaker (or I do).

Facing off against the Big Guy, Mr the Mung Bean vs the Young(ish) Prince
Tumblr media
Mr the Bean wondering if he has at last bitten off more than he can chew.
Mr the Mung Bean, Silken Windhound and the Young(ish) Prince, Borzoi.
Just FYI, for anyone unfamiliar with coursing dogs... we do not let the Borzoi play with the Silkens unsupervised. And when anyone looks like they are getting a bit amped, out they go. The size difference can be a real hazard, and even though the Prince is 10 years old and thinks he gave birth to the Bean and so is appointed his caregiver for life, mistakes can happen.

I know I keep saying this but I love my agility trainer. She's so solutions-oriented and so experienced with nutty high-drive dogs. Last night we had a talk that basically boiled down to
No, you are not Ruining Him.
He's acting Like This because he is an eight-month-old intact male from a breed selected to be high energy, high drive, and Aware of the environment.
He's doing a lot of normal puppy shit, it just seems overwhelming because he's the size of a medium-sized elephant. When a small dog like Kermit acts like an idiot all you have to do is pick them up. When a dog like Zaku acts like an idiot it's like being leashed to a pickup truck with the speed and tenacity of a guided missile.
He will be an extremely lovely adult dog.
The prey drive will need to be managed his entire life, but when maturity hits he'll have impulse control and it will be very workable.
She had us do a little exercise that he excelled at and she was like, 'See? He's great in an area with no distractions.'
So it will be okay.
