octonauts ATLA au 🤲
Barnacles is an EXTREMELY powerful waterbender from the North Pole, with a strong love for icebending—he defaults to it most of the time. He can use all subforms of waterbending, but they're a bit harder.
Kwazii's the Avatar, but he's still a pirate AND he's a natural firebender, so he still has that "scary and dangerous" reputation. He's afraid of using his firebending, because he hates it. Barnacles is teaching him waterbending, and he's pretty good at it. So far he sucks at earthbending, and his airbending is okay, but if he gets worked up it can accidentally come out as fire... which, yeah.
Peso is an airbender, and the first one in his family. He's not very skilled at bending, and he can't fly very well, and sometimes wishes he was a waterbender, like Barnacles. That way he'd be "stronger", and could utilize its healing abilities. He has an epiphany later on in the middle of S3 that makes him realize how powerful he really is, and he learns to fly :)
Tweak is an earthbender, which she inherited from her dad (maybe*). Like Barnacles, she has a love and preference for a specific subtype—in her case it's metalbending. She's very good at it. It's how she builds GUPs so fast.
Shellington is a waterbender. He doesn't use it very much, mainly because he's Not Great at controlling it—so you'll either end up getting lightly spit on or completely drenched in a tsunami by accident.
Dashi is a non-bender (with water tribe ancestry), which puts her at a disadvantage during some missions. However! She has all of her skills from the Canon Universe, plus the extra adaptiveness seen in non-benders in ATLA (Sokka, Suki, etc).
Inkling is also a non-bender, but he has studied the elements and different bending techniques his whole life. He's Kwazii's Monk Gyatso but with less dying.
Octoagents! 👇
Calico Jack is Kwazii's Uncle Iroh. I needn't explain further. His main goal is to teach Kwazii to be less afraid of his firebending.
Natquik is a waterbender, who taught Barnacles everything he knows. He got his penchant for icebending from him. He pretty much invented it. He survived Antarctica by ✨ Becoming One With The Ice™ ✨. He doesn't just study icequakes, he can make them. He can probably spiritbend.
*I'm TORN between making Marsh be an earthbender or a waterbender. If he's an earthbender, then he can't metalbend like Tweak can, but he's still very strong. Like, scarily strong 👀. IF HE'S A WATERBENDER, then he's a swampbender, full stop.
Tracker is an airbender, mainly because of how he's clearly paralleling Peso's arc in AnB. He was the only airbender in his Polar Scouts troop, and he got picked on for it a bit—but Barnacles thought it was cool as heck, and that's how they became friends.
Do I need to explain Paani being a waterbender? No I do not. He's probably VERY powerful, but very chillax about it. He successfully freaks out everyone who witnesses him bend every time. He can part the seas like freaking Moses.
Pearl is a waterbender like Shellington; she's not super strong, but she has a LOT more control over it than he does. Peri will be a waterbender as well, but he hasn't unlocked it yet. He's trying very hard because he wants to be like his mum and uncle SO badly.
Min could easily be a bender of any kind and it would make sense, but I kinda wanna say she's a non-bender. Just cuz ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Earthbender Ryla. That's all. It makes it a lot easier to get out of caves when she's stuck. She's very casual about it. So casual, that most people either forget or don't even realize she's a bender until it comes up. Then they're like "oh yeah." as she literally moves mountains.
Airbender Pinto, who has no clue how to control it. Whenever he gets frustrated with himself, he accidentally creates small tornadoes. He can also fly! He likes to brag about it. a lot. mainly to Peso.
Waterbender Koshi, who hasn't discovered that about herself yet. She's in for a fun time when she figures it out. Remember how happy she was when she got her Octowatch? Yeah :) 10x that. I also imagine their family is full of late bloomers, but because of Dashi she has pretty low expectations for herself right now.
#can you guess what im rewatching ? ✨ xD#👀👀 what if 👉👈 someone drew this 😳 haha jk........... unless 😳#octonauts#marsh being an earthbender is mainly because this entire post was inspired by watching the feuding tribes episode of atla#and the tour guide reminding me of marsh.#anyway rip to the dashi fans but sokka and uncle bumi are my favs so i promise my decision for her was made with love 🫶🤣#avatar kwazii avatar kwazii Avatar Kwazii AVATAR KWAZII#i am right#ty for your time#octonauts au#self indulgent post time#ps worldbuilding stuff:#most birds descend from the air temples‚ but penguins are weird so they're usually waterbenders if they're benders at all–#which is why peso is an airbender‚ plus the first one in his family to bend at all#pinto came right after him‚ but since peso would've been off being an octonaut he didn't have anyone around to mentor him#also pirates have mixed ancestry from every nation. but the majority of pirates Don't Like the avatar so uh yeah rip kwazii iykwim–#he might be the first avatar to be a pirate in history just bc i think that'd be neat for the ✨ story ✨#also bianca and hugo would both be waterbenders too btw#one of the cubs is a non-bender but idk who. maybe orson.#ALSO the airbenders were never wiped out in this au#the War™ never really happened but firebenders are still Scary bc of the whole Fire Is Destruction thing#idrk what the Story of this au is except for like— kwazii is the avatar. he was abandoned by his family. he joins the octonauts to help--#--bring peace to the world + nature etc. so basically the canon plot of the og show but with magic ✨ /hj#long post#surprised i haven't hit the tag limit yet#ok byebye end post

Every time I have a knee-jerk reaction to clarify "oh I think this is cool but I'm not ~one of them~" I have to stop and think for a moment about why. What about being perceived as part of that group bothers me? Why does it bother me? What would clarification acheive, other than alienating a group I'm trying to say is interesting? It's very informative

hello after reading ASOH i'm deeply curious about the fics you've read with A/B/O dynamics similar to yours... you represent the au in such a different and more nuanced way than i'm used to encountering and it's so exciting to read. would love any recs (from honestly any fandoms)! ps loving the series it brings me such joy to read your characterizations :)
Hmm, that's a good question. I don't have a ton of recs off the top of my head, I apologize. I've kind of been throwing in bits of tropes and subverted tropes from various fandoms in a huge pot this whole time.
I would focus your search on fics where there's tagged beta roles, or tagged a/b/o dynamics that mention betas to start, since that's a big change I've used in the dynamics of ASOH. Anything with "pack dynamics" tagged is also a good place to start. "Non-traditional a/b/o dynamics" might also work, depending on how you filter stuff out.
Platonic pack dynamics is also where I'd look. There isn't a ton of stuff out there in that area, but you can find it if you dig. I know there's a lot of smut in ASOH but that's something I've been trying to focus on, especially with the worldbuilding.

my dearest darlingest marina i need you to know you have broken me quite thoroughly and i might never ever forgive you for it as long as we both shall live ! ❣️
to clarify- ive been saving "let's fall out of love" to read later ever since you posted it cuz i didn't feel ready- didn't think i was emotionally stable enough to read it then. well, tonight ive been clearing out my list of unread fics from last year aND GODDAMN WAS I EVER RIGHT ABOUT THAT.!!!
started getting all weepy and shaky before that first courthouse bathroom conversation and i didn't ever stop 😭 sobbed so hard and for so long at the unfairness of it all (for both of them !) i gave myself an asthma attack and had to stop reading.. what really broke me was e's bittersweet and somewhat detached realization on the courthouse steps that all their kids had flocked to laney during the divorce. couldn't stop thinking abt how badly i would've wanted to tell jesse off for being sharp to his daddy, and the knowledge that elaine COULDN'T, that it wasn't quite over yet and she still had to save face for a bit longer despite how much it killed them both, despite being the only person who could truly understand just how deep elvis was hurting right then and having been the one who'd made a whole life out of loving him hard.......... the idea of him resigning himself to having lost that forever (false) and her having to go against everything in her nature to let him ache a while longer,, oh it just shattered my spirit to bits right then and there. oh god im gonna start crying again just thinking about how lonely they both made each other 💔💔💔
im literally inconsolable, even with the reasoning behind it/ knowing how it ends beforehand, and having those future timeline fics to fall back on did nOT SAVE ME like . dear GOD woman how is that even possible?!?? if i had any shred of humanity left in my body id wax poetic for three more paragraphs abt how that speaks to your truly absolutely outstanding talent as an author and worldbuilder, but alas i think i cried out everything that was keeping me sane sometime in the last half hour and now i have to go lie facedown on the floor in my hallway and die abt it all instead 👍 fantastic work as always i love all your work so much forever etc etc 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
ps: it took me the better part of an hour to type all this out since ive lost the water content of approxinately a small ocean w my tears and am doing physically poorly in response 🫠🫠 so thanks for ur patience in this trying time 😔🙏
I spun around in circles upon reading this like my poor coon dog when she had a stroke -jovially of course. Like this is the stuff every writer dreams of getting for feedback but holy smokes, your talent for screaming? Beyond my wildest dreams. I’ve always told you how much I appreciate your time and enthusiasm to tell your thoughts Mary Hope, and now is no exception. My babe and co-author @elvisabutler deserves the pleasure of reading what we’ve wrought, as well. I’ll be halving all your medical and psychiatric expenses with her. 😏
Tbh, despite knowing both imminent and longterm reconciliation was to happen after this segment, we were just as cut up about tearing them apart as you were to read it. In fact, it was worse than all the lead up fics where the passive aggressive accumulation of grievances came across as hurts but ultimately only aggravations. This is just…PAIN. Funny how what was untenable before a tragedy suddenly appears to have been idyllic after it. Anyways.
Thank you for reading, here’s some Kleenex, albuterol and do know the sequel to this divorce is in drafts, so not finished AT ALL but it is in the works.
Not that it’ll hurt much less than this one. 😈

I loved Ylfa from episode 1 but I never found the right words to express what I felt about her o why I found her so endearing (aside from her being played by Emily Axford obviously)
But after watching this I think I finally get it
I love this character's semplicity ; at it's core Ylfa's story it's nothing more than a coming of age story about a young girl going through puberty, facing the real world and understanding that she can't always trust grown ups and authority figures.
The magic, the horror, the shapeshifting and Brennan classic time travel stuff are all very well handled elements that makes this story in particular stand out but at the end of the day she is really simple. And I think that's what makes her work so damn well
She is a nice, selfless, brave and relentlessy optimistic young girl who never stops loving life (ironic for someone who has basically become death itself) and the people around her even after seeing their shortcomings and what really lurks in "the woods"
And I think that having this kind of characters is really important, especially in horror and especially in a series that can get so complicated with it's themes and it's worldbuilding
PS: also, can we talk about Emily's performance in this episode?!?
PPS: also Murph silently handing her tissues after she started crying and her hugging him and screaming "i love him" while the others were roasting him. Relationship goals

small little thing abt botw/totk and the future of zelda games considering it seems likely that future zelda games might be in the same style as those two and how i feel like botw/totk don't actually feel like zelda games (kind of messy i just typed this out in a kind of informal or whatever way) (this post is long af btw so uhhhh yeah)
im part of the group that claims that botw/totk aren't 'real' zelda games but... i guess they are technically 'real' zelda games, but... they sure as fuck don't feel like it, and because of that, i'm not at all excited with the idea of future loz games being in the same style, especially with the pitfalls these last two games have fallen into having been things that past zelda games did especially well, it feels like things have been sort of flipped on their heads in terms of what's being valued or whatever
like... the best parts of older zelda games were things like the story and the characters and the puzzles and the dungeons and stuff like that... the best parts of botw/totk right now are just the gameplay. people enjoy these new characters, but they dont have the narrative backing that older games do, they don't have the same impactful arcs or roles allowed by a more linear story
the point i want to get at though is how botw/totk honestly don't feel like direct evolutions or steps up from past zelda games but rather just... entirely different game styles (open world games) with the zelda flavoring and worldbuilding and story styling slapped on top.
i mean... i feel like a half-decent example of some other well-known franchises that have jumped on this (honestly kind of thoughtless) open-world bandwagon are mario (mario odyssey) pokemon (sword/shield and scarlet/violet) fire emblem (kind of. with some free-walking segments in 3 houses and engage) and the soulsborne type games (elden ring), these are all other well known and storied game series' that have somewhat made the move to open world, and i think that switch was a bit smoother, kept the core and integrity of the games that came before much better than botw/totk did
elden ring is the easiest to explain- the gameplay loop and core mechanics are the same and build upon past games' you just have more room to run around and get killed in with some little open-world flourishes like material gathering.
fire emblem is... a bit less flexible in terms of changing up the core gameplay, and the addition of open-world segments are added to add bonuses to the strategy gameplay and allow for more support-building oppourtunities and little minigames, and its more or less evolution from echoes' dungeon-crawling bits and the customizable castle in fates. the core gameplay still effectively works the exact same, just with some little class or mechanic tweaks and additions.
mario odyssey, though each world was pretty massive, still had your typical 3d mario platforming, and the new hat stuff fit in pretty well with olderpowerups and gimmicks, and the boss battles feel and work pretty similarly to the way they used it- odyssey does feel like an evolution from past mario games (ps. playing two-player with one person as cappy snaps the game in half. its the secret easy mode lol)
the new pokemon games are pretty much just the same as past pokemon games, theyre just open world and buggy as fuck rip have extra little open-world flourishes that build on what past games set up. the battling works the same as ever and the progression is the same with a number of powerful trainers you have to battle to continue forward.
with botw/totk... the progression is dramatically different in terms of power-scaling, world presentation, item-gathering, puzzle-solving... pretty much everything in the established zelda format. i get that it was pretty much the aim with botw to have a fresh start and throw out a lot of the old standards but it just makes them feel so dramatically alien to past zelda games; theyre completely different experiences in pretty much every single way, and as such they dont feel like what we've (well, people who have started with and spent a lot of time with other loz games) learned to associate with the zelda titles.
with open world games in general it's a bit harder to have a truly impactful narrative akin to those in past zelda games, anyways. i will admit that botw was a good execution of trying out something entirely new, and the narrative and gameplay and world actually complement each other very well, so despite what i've said in the past I can't really fault it's narrative too much since it's a less traditional sort of narrative and effectively does what it aims to do very well.
totk, on the other hand, proves that this style of game does not mesh with the old style of storytelling at ALL. linear games can have proper narratives with coherent stakes, developing characters, twists and reveals and building emotion and mood- and all of that is thrown out the window with totk when they decided to try and have both a more linear story with actual reveals and development and emotion, while also letting you literally spoil it for yourself out the gate.
you can't really have a well-executed story when players are capable of doing things drastically out of order and of jumping into story beats without the prior buildup and straight-up ruining what could be otherwise emotional reveals, and players being capable of doing this is hard-baked in how the game fundamentally works. I honestly feel bad for people who found the fifth sage by accident before anything else.
you can't effectively have a linear story with character growth and plot developments and impactful moments while also allowing it to be experienced out of order and with massive time gaps in between; with this kind of stuff, you can't really have your cake and eat it too. say what you will about the linearity of past zelda games, but i bet you that midna wouldn't be as beloved as a character as she is if it weren't for the linear order of the story and its events. certain parts of storytelling may demand for a linear manner of telling that story.
botw's story works because none of the memories reveal anything groundbreaking taht you don't already know; they are optional and merely give you more information about these characters from link's past and simply inform you about the girl keeping ganon at bay. if you find a late memory first, that's fine- it technically doesnt reveal anything too important to you, it just fills in some gaps for you and your player character. it makes sense within the story itself for the world to be so open and for you to be able to do what you can; the story is not the focus, nor is it even needed to beat the game. the story was made with the gameplay and what you are allowed to do in mind, and as such doesn't include things such as in-depth character development or important plot-twists.
on the other hand, you can easily spoil totk's biggest plot twist in a handful of different ways completely by accident, just by getting curious about the world around you. this can shatter a lot of the mystery or tension in the plot and this can happen completely by accident to someone playing the game organically and blindly. the story itself doesn't take this into account, it reads more like a linear story that would be more suited to a linear style of play, coming across things in order to ramp up the stakes and let things be revealed at the best possible time. (tbh totk's story doesnt seem to take the player into account in general, if the game forcing you to watch basically the same long cutscene four fucking times says anything, jesus christ)
narrative pitfalls aside, botw/totk put heavy emphasis on gameplay, but not in the same way older zelda games did, and as such trade away the unique items and gimmick-y game-specific mechanics for a small toolset handed to you out the gate. what botw/totk do- giving you everything you need from the start and having very little true varation in the gameplay from then on out- make sense and works just fine for an open world game. there is, however, a lack of actual depth to that gameplay that other open world games do have (off the top of my head, the ability to unlock and upgrade abilities and have general character upgrades in fenyx rising as well as the impressive depths of elden ring's combat and character customization system). the most depth botw/totk has to the actual gameplay is just the fourish different weapon types and the ways you use your fourish abilities (saying fourish bc for real ultrahand and fuse are fundamentally the exact same thing). there is also just raising the little defense numbers on your armor and getting more stamina and health, but that does absolutely nothing to the actual gameplay but make link more durable.
i mean, sure, health in past loz games just makes link more durable, too, but thats how health upgrades in any other game work.
the gameplay switch makes sense, considering the switch from a linear puzzle-adventure concentric game to a more sandbox-esque open-world game, but it does not mesh with the former loz formula at all, so while the shift in style makes sense, it makes me think that you can't have a previous-style loz experience in an open-world sandboxish sort of game. especially with how in totk you can very easily bypass most of the fire temple just using the mechanics handed to you at the start. you can't have the same type of zelda dungeons in a game where you are allowed to do it 'wrong' and the game itself does not allow for the same kinds of puzzles.
i am of the opinion that so long as future zelda games work the same way botw/totk did, we will not get old-school zelda-style dungeons again.
the loss of a variety of items used for specific puzzles and environment switches is the loss of a varied dungeon experience and the loss of the same kind of world and character progression as past zelda games.
you are handed everything you'll ever need at the start of botw/totk. the only thing that will meaningfully change is how much damage you do. there are no alternate strategies opened up by new items that can double as weapons, no new traversal options or routes opened up by things such as grappling hooks or clawshots or whips or specific wands. even the battle system is drastically different, instead of being enemies that take specific amounts of hits to die while you can obtain progressively stronger swords, enemies are just damage sponges and you can get all kind of weapons that just do different numerical amounts of damage.
the bosses themselves- big staples and draws of zelda games- also work extremely differently. instead of having to leverage specific items to expose weak spots or having to fight in a specific manner to do damage, you are just asked to... do damage. even in totk's bosses, where sage abilities are most certainly helpful, the only boss i found to truly require a sage ability was the lighting temple's boss; the others i either hardly used the sage at all (i didn't use yunobo at all in the second phase of the fire temple boss and hardly had a need for tulin with the wind temple boss [esp considering i was using a 3-shot lynel bow to make the poor fucker a cakewalk]) or found that alternative solutions felt better, like resorting to splash fruit on repeat water temple fights instead of wrestling with having to activate and use sidon's ability. the sages are honestly fairly poor replacements for dungeon specific items.
this kind of causes botw/totk to play more like a poor man's dark souls or just like any other open world rpgish game. i don't play botw/totk for the experience of a zelda game, i play it because it's an open world game that i can walk around in for five minute before switching to something else because i liked something in that other game better.
the combat in botw/totk isnt designed in such a way that makes it feel good. mineru's mech is fucking dismal, but since it's just either shooting with a bow or attacking with one of three types of melee weapon with some timing for a dodge, it can get stale fast. it doesn't necessarily even feel good, since there's not enough variety for it to get really engaging. (this is def an uneven comparison, but elden ring's combat feels considerable better with the different dodges you can do and the amount of attack options you have with just one weapon, not to mention the amount of control you have over your general fighting style.) combat in botw/totk at hour 1 is the exact same as combat in botw/totk at hour 100, the only different being the amount of damage you do or how much of a beating you can take.
it just... the styles of botw/totk can't allow them to feel the same as older zelda games. the shift in style was clearly a good move to draw in series newbies and shake things up, but it comes at the caveat of making them feel distant from their predecessors and uncomfortably similar to other games like them. it's hard to avoid comparisons with elden ring when on the surface they are very similar games, one just feels more true to its core identity
this all is said without mentioning the way in which botw/totk lore feels almost dismissive of past series staples and seems intent on not looking back while also taking every fucking attempt to nudge you and say 'hey, remember that zelda game' and honestly all that shit does is make me want to play a different zelda game.
botw/totk seem altogether very desperate to distance themselves from past zelda games while also being unable to really tear itself from what came before and it just culminates in me spotting linebeck island on the map and going 'damn i miss linebeck' and turning the fucking game off to play phantom hourglass instead. say what you will about phantom hourglass, but it certainly handles its story progression and character development infinitely better than the game that lets you accidentally shatter the impact of the story by deciding to check out that cool temple in the distance of the depths
#quick note abt the examples from early on i got the verdict on soulsborne games from my friend who has actually played more than elden ring#and pokemon was kinda a guess the most recently mainline pokemon game i have is sun/moon#totk has made me really think about what i like in video games and why lmao.#it has also made me appreciate botw a lot more. i prefer the emptier hyrule of botw it just feels extra cluttered in totk#i like how in botw its a lot more natural and more fun to honestly run around in with there being no falling debris or scary holes#salty talks#totk salt#being annoying abt totk again hiiiii. id like to talk abt stuff i liked in other loz games but its hard to start without some kind prompt#im not entirely sure how i could really explain how i feel totk's story failed and why without going in circles for a while#its just. the gameplay and the intended story experience clash like fucking crazy plus the story relies too much on the player#to do a lot of emotional heavy lifting#like. if you want to start a convo with me abt this go for it but this is what i have to say for rn#loz#legend of zelda#totk#botw#totk criticism#i do really appreciate botw now im not gonna lie. its still not amazing in my eyes but i appreciate it for what it is#also i cannot believe totk made linebeck island worse fuck you#like. in botw theres a goddamn chest with 50 rupees and thats a good subtle nod to what's being referenced#in totk theres just two bokoblins and nothing else and i dont care if it wouldve been lazy to just have the chest there again#you explicitly namedropped linebeck might as well make good on it. its more fun to continue having little nods like that#i understand when people say that saying botw isnt a 'real zelda game' is bad criticism but tbh its not really a criticism its just an#observation. it comes with its ups and downs and for me it makes me enjoy these games less and makes me feel a bit alienated#if that makes sense. idk. its late and if i continue with that thought im going to lose it for sure#ig just. im upset abt how totk handled its story and im upset at the idea of... this being the future of these games yknow#it feels like a selfish sentiment but idk#long post#bitching abt totk

Ok so new stuff! This is kind of my own little recap and a mini summary for people who did not watch the video (I just did! It’s long but I think worth it if you have time!)
Tumblr media
So probably just gonna mention the premier/standard sets for now
Murders at Karlov Manor
Murder mystery but set on Ravnica! Honestly I’m excited for these “backdrop” sets. If there’s a cool trope to explore, I’d much rather fit it into an existing world we like, than try to stretch out a too-small theme in a whole set. It can really make the theme unique to magic and give it its own special flavor AND worldbuild for existing worlds! I love Ravnica and the guilds are a huuuuuge part of it. But honestly? I’m really jazzed to go to Ravnica and have that be background flavor. Excited to see where it goes.
Outlaws of Thunder Junction
It’s the western set! It’s the villain set! It’s the combination western-villain set! I’m intrigued where they go with it, especially since it’s also a villain set. The key art has silhouettes that might show off-plane villains gathering together. (One kinda looks like a gorgon? But 1. I’m not sure Vraska is a proper villain anymore…. I mean I guess during phyrexia but if Nissa/Ajani aren’t villains for that, Vraska shouldn’t be 2. What about Jace? Unless! He also gets to be a cowboy here too. Maybe they’re stopping villains idk)
Bloomburrow
Redwall World! Animal world! I’m actually really excited for this one! Don’t have much speculation/etc. yet I’m just excited to explore this space and I’m sooooo excited for the art (even Maro said this is probably the most charming set they’ve ever done)
Duskmourn House of Horror
Modern horror/haunted house world. Neutral here. I can see the desire for it and it’s a nice balance to Innistrad’s more classic horror. Maro said think 70s horror for this one. A little weird that the whole plane is within this one haunted mansion but that could also be fascinating worldbuilding so we’ll see.
Overall honestly I’m pretty interested in most of these! Ok maybe mostly just Bloomburrow, but I’m excited for a not Ravnica but still Ravnica set too xD Cautiously optimistic for Outlaws but I was always a bit neutral on a Wild West plane anyhow.
Anyways, I’m gonna do the far future in a second post :)
Oh ps, here is the Outlaws art that you can maybe see recognized magic villains in it

Ohhhhhhh my god I’ve been waiting my entire life for this moment-
Yes I have so much more! I’ve been coming up with ideas while reading the first 5 Oz books, so there’s a lot of characters I haven’t drawn yet and plot points that show up down the line but I’ll just stick to worldbuilding stuff for now
The entire thing was basically a challenge to make Oz as anti-monarchy as possible, which is incredibly hard considering Ozma is literally the god Queen of Oz and no one ever questions this. It wasn’t hard to make it gay and anti-capitalist though, the original cast is just 100% queer socialists (who all believe in the divine right of kings for some reason idk)
SO. My version of Oz is essentially a place outside of time that humans from earth can occasionally slip into during times of crisis, “saved” by Lurline or her children. So as an example, Dottie (Dorothy) is from Earth in 2016, while Heartly (Tinman) is from Earth in 2089. Despite this difference in time period, they still appeared in Oz at roughly the same time. This means that Oz itself is a jumble mix matched time periods from roughly the late 1600s to the early 2100s (so despite everything, I managed to make the random sci-fi elements in Oz make sense)
When a human enters Oz, there’s a chance that an object they have on their person will become a “wand”, which allows them to become a witch. Wands are usually passed down through families of humans who have been in Oz for generations, but sometimes they’re gifted to non humans or stolen. Usually, humans rule over the other peoples of Oz, because they’re seen as the rightful users of magic. This is not good. Some examples of wands are the Witch of the North’s slate, the Witch of the South’s bubble wand, the Witch of the East’s scythe, the Witch of the West’s umbrella, and the Momby’s stirring spoon
Another source of magic is silver, but I’m keeping it vague as I haven’t really figured out the details on that. Just know that any non-wand magic item contains silver somehow
Also the titular wizard of Oz is the main antagonist, she’s a puppeteer from the 80s who decided that the best use she could get out of a city that’s entirely painted green is to use the whole thing as a green screen to trick an entire country that her stupid little puppet is literally god

Hey it's me again! I'm glad that the message cheered you up and gave you the push to even sketch that section you were struggling with. That's awesome! :D
But yeah, never forget that the art you already share with us is gorgeous and there's no shame in focusing on what makes you happy and passionate.
Also, this might be bad advice lol but sometimes when you're stuck you can handwave stuff a bit and just move on to the part you care about. Nightow himself didn't care too much about worldbuilding and we still love that blessed mess called Trigun 😂
Just keep being awesome, me and all your followers will be cheering you on! 💙
PS: Tbh I'm very curious about Fluffy's character development, truly an MVP 😂
Aaaah, sorry I haven't replied afterwards, my life literally went upside down a few days after this! ;; <3
I absolutely POWERED through the difficult chapter a bit after receiving your asks and will be posting it to ptrn very soon! Storyboards for the next two chapters finished and about to sketch the pages properly. And honestly kept going back to your asks in my mind. Thank you so much for the supportive words! You helped me IMMENSELY. <3
Oh, gosh, tell me about the mess. Here I go, bothering the far side of the internet for the canon timeline and then stumble and fall over other stuff that was never explained (or I was too dumb to realize it hahah). So yeah. It is a mess and we work with the fact that it is! :D
Thank you so so so much! <3
Also sorry about Fluffy's character arc being so short-lived. I hope you liked how it ended, though! ;; <3

Some super early tests of a bomb-dropping enemy from our Scalepiercer sequel, codenamed Taproute for now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This lad showcases a lot of the planned changes/improvements from the original game, namely that enemies are now made of individually destructable parts, use thrusters to control physics-simulated movement, and utilize normal maps for real-time lighting.
These systems combine in really neat ways, e.g: enemies are now more of a 'shooting puzzle' where you can choose to disable specific parts to change their functionality. We have a ton of variations of these planned and are excited to show you in the future!
PS:
I'll try to share more of my writing/personal worldbuilding stuff mixed between the game dev stuff too. I'm glad people seem to have interest according to the poll! Lately I've been working on some social ethology stuff for Stekh, and how it compares homologously to eyebrow-flashing type behaviors in humans.
Until text time!

Get Reacquainted!
thanks for the tag @sleepy-night-child! always good to catch up :)
last song: One Slip Too Late from Rhythm Doctor (which I wrote about a while back)
favourite colour: most shades of bluuuue.
currently watching: more like listening to a basketball podcast called "Numbers on the Board" cause I'm a bigger basketball nerd than before and also this math guy
currently reading: uhhh. book-wise nothing really. I've been scanning around for a new TTRPG to possibly run for my friends and Fabula Ultima from Need Games and Triangle Agency Delta Test by Haunted Table Games do some pretty cool stuff (the latter of which incorporates very cool worldbuilding into the book)
sweet, spicy, or savoury: sweet!
last thing I searched online: "it only takes one bear and breakfast" because I couldn't figure out who to talk to
last thing I searched for writing purposes: had to look up a word for "mode of transportation" over on OneLook
current obsession: the impossible task of playing all the games in my next to play list and also a few new wip ideas brewing that hope to be full things in the future
open tags all around! also tagging @annarts05, @moonluringfrost, and @ettawritesnstudies!
PS have dog update under the cut! :D

just found and read your whole HHAU which is perfect timing as our every other year vacation to a small forest town up in the mountains is only 5 days away, since i am loving this au if i have any ideas while up there i’ll share them with you! ps the arg isn’t crucial for the story right?
OH absolutely please yes, I love getting new ideas!! And no worries, the arg is completely optional! It's just some fun supplementary material that adds to the worldbuilding :D Most of the main "plot" will be told through art and blog posts
That being said, while HHAU is teeechnically on a hiatus (RIP school and work overload), I've got BIG plans for when it returns that may incorporate some ARG vibes and other fun stuff.

hey 👀 i saw that post you reblogged abt wanting asks about your ocs! i've been seeing you tag stuff with 'pactology' (i think that's what it was? correct me if i'm wrong!), that's one of your original stories, right?
if so: i would love to hear about it! based on the posts you tag for it, it seems really interesting!! i love supernatural stories :D ps.
a lot of the posts you tag for that story i tag for mine aksdjnjaksd
hehe that's a fun coincidence :]
and yes! pactology is one of my stories – sort of. it's less of a story im developing and more of a setting im worldbuilding/creating ocs in! it's basically urban fantasy, in which i adapt various common magic creatures and such to fit the magic system i made + make a fun and (hopefully) refreshing take on them
There's PLENTY i could say about different species and how i classify them + their connections to magic, but explaining how the whole magic stuff works is a bit of a boring intro to it, so i might as well introduce the OCs i focus the most in!

Sun, Nathan, Fern and Lucas! they're a gay friend group/polycule/figuring it out who all live in a coastal town Sun and Nathan recently moved into. (Sun uses it/any, the others use he/him)
Sun is (sort of) a half-demon & Nathan's boyfriend/witch familiar. they run a lil shop with Nathan in the front of their house. he became part-demon rather than being born as such, and is currently trying to get used to life like this, especially because he isn't exactly stable yet
Nathan is a witch who moved away to live alone w Sun to find himself. He opened up a shop for magic herbs and charms to work with what he knows and loves. his studies of magic focus on trying to synthesize different kinds of it based on older, less studied forms of magic.
Fern lives in their neighborhood with his aunt, Lucas and 4 dogs. he does odd jobs around town to help his aunt pay for stuff and is a sweetheart. also he's packing massive amounts of raw magic he never learned to really control and he's one meltdown away from collapsing a house :]
Lucas is a hyena/maned wolf kobold (which in this world means furry), he's been living with Fern ever since he got in bad terms with his family (he's trans. the rest is history). he's a good cook, loves hiking, and helps Nathan with his research

Happy WorldBuilding Wednesday! What's one piece of worldbuilding you unintentionally created, but are also proud of?
Hi Tori!
Dragons.
Specifically, dragons with four legs and two wings, not wyverns.
This is going to be an example of my brain deciding 'no, this isn't believable', then proceeding to make leaps in reasoning, until things started fitting together.
I really wanted to have dragons in my setting, and early on when I was developing it, I considered them evolving alongside all other Earthly animals, and just being 'normal' in this world. BUT then I realised that it's incredibly improbable (by my somewhat... perfectionistic standards; this might be an understatement). Basically, the way evolution works in real life, the number of pairs of limbs an animal has is set fairly early on down their evolution path, so having all the vertebrates (mammals, birds, etc.) with 4 limbs, but only dragons with 6, can't possibly happen. So wyverns could work.
But I wanted my four-legged, two-winged dragons!
So they are now sort of demigods that exist outside the time and space, and can perceive all of time simultaneously. They came to be by being believed into existence through stories told repeatedly in the dead of night, in the Days of Darkness (i.e. before written history). This precedent had all sorts of domino effect on the metaphysics, but also ended up fitting perfectly with the rest of the system and tying a lot of things together.
And having nigh omniscient beings who don't understand how humans work popping in and saying the most random, confusing stuff, is a brilliant way to mess with my characters😁
PS. I'm reusing the 'alternative evolution paths' for The Fulcrum. This research won't go to waste!
