Hi guys, I know it’s a long shot to post on here, but I’m starting to get desperate. I lost my dear friend at T.F. Green airport, PVD yesterday. I have filed every report and called every number but I want to find as many ways to try and find her if I can. If you happen to know anything or have seen anything, please contact me. I miss her so much, she has been my life long friend and I can’t accept her being gone. She disappeared sometime between 5:30-6:30 pm EST yesterday, between gate 8 and 5. I appreciate any help, even just looking at her and thinking about her because she must be lonely right now.

Inner Life, Revealed

The Eliza Ward house, at 2 George Street in Providence, Rhode Island, dates from 1814. What’s most interesting to me about it is the contrast between its spare, restrained façade and the richly modeled, out-of-scale bay window above the front door.
Tumblr media
The façade is severely planar. Not only are the finely jointed stone and brick tightly aligned, but the arched window above the door is set into the stonework with almost no relief.
Tumblr media
The more deeply set basement windows, in the stone foundation, are covered with ornamental grilles, flush with the stone surface.
Tumblr media
All of this is tight up against the sidewalk. Unlike nearby houses with space in front for plantings, the boundary here between the public realm and the private is razor-thin. Only two elements pierce this stern boundary. One is the step between the sidewalk and the door, flanked by tightly curled handrails. It is appropriate that the step crosses the boundary, since this is where you’re meant to pass through it. It’s where the outside world is offered entry.
Tumblr media
The other element that breaks the plane of the façade is the bay window. Because it lines up midway between the heights of the two rows of windows to either side, we know it’s at a stair landing.
Tumblr media
Picture Eliza Ward coming down the stair in the morning. She pauses to look out the bay window, the only one in the house that affords a view up and down the street, to check out the neighborhood before her day begins. Or, again, before retiring, to see that things are quieting down for the night. It’s a special moment in the life of the house.
It is also the only moment where the private life breaks through that taut plane, into the public realm, bringing with it something of the exuberance of the interiors, of which you’d otherwise have no clue. I’ve not seen them in person, but you can find images online. The Library of Congress offers black and white photos taken for the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) in 1958; Zillow presents recent color photos. One of the HABS photos gives a pale preview of the original, flamboyant Dufour wallpaper that will knock your socks off in color:
Tumblr media
Once you’ve seen the Zillow images—really, they’re worth the visit—the audacity of the bay window makes sense.

Now for the last comic convention I tabled at in 2022, the finale, Rhode Island Comic Con! It happened on a weirdly warm weekend for November. I didn’t need my jacket most of the time. Chris and I even ate outside one night, without a heater or anything! By contrast, it was freezing in the convention center. I kept my jacket on 90% of the time.
Traveling to Providence is always fun. When not at Rhode Island Comic Con, I went to a large arcade bar and sang karaoke at a karaoke club! Chris and I ate at a weird restaurant in North Providence called Camp Nowhere, where everything on the menu was $4 or less. These weren’t true small plates, which almost always cost more than $4. They were just smaller servings of normal “barbeque” type food. E.g. for $3 or $4, you could order one slider-sized hamburger. To make a meal, you’d have to order at least two of these and an also small side. Even the alcohol was priced this way, and the size of the mixed drinks for $4 was quite reasonable. It was a perfect restaurant for that night, since directly before I had an early dessert and drink at an excellent bakery in downtown Providence called Sin (which unfortunately does not do the Seven Deadly Sins-themed drink and dessert pairings anymore.)

(former mass resident who now lives in rhode island)
The best way that i can think to describe Rhode Island is that it’s Massachusetts prop closet. like when they were making the set pieces for Massachusetts they had a bunch left over and shoved it in a neighboring state. it has everything that Massachusetts has but suckier, including landscapes, drivers, and dunkins. I wanna go back.
I do think the exception is that Providence has a pretty kickass zoo.

I saw you say something about “The largest lesbian centered events company in the greater Boston area”. What’s the company name so I can follow?
It's funny when I posted that comment I was thinking I should go back and add links for the lesbians. Sapphic Nights Boston hosts roughly 1-4 events every week. Mostly club nights with a theme (emo, woc, Slavic, masc, pop, Latin, bailefunk, etc). They also do events like drag race viewing parties, sip and paint events, yacht parties, there's a retreat weekend. The events are mostly in Boston with a few happening on a regular basis in Providence, Worcester, and Salem. I think they just finished a weekend in Provincetown. Second place is Lesbian Night Life who does more day parties, brunches, singles events, and over 30s events. Snatched Entertainment does 'queer poc' events but they lean more towards women.
Dani's Queer Bar is a lesbian owned bar that's supposed to open soon. Until then if you're willing to drive there's Femme Bar in Worcester. In addition to typically club nights they have lots more lowkey stuff like boardgames nights and book clubs. In the Jamaica Plain neighborhood is lesbian owned Drawdown Brewing that does some women's events. I've been there to watch women's hockey and they also have non-alcoholic drinks.
