Hello! I don't have any new words to share from Basil Pitch's Diary, but thought I'd share the BPD plot timeline that lives over my desk. Here it is, redacted but for one spoiler.

I just needed to physically move things around to grasp what could / should go when. When I finish writing an event, the paper slip comes down. (It's not to scale in terms of chronology--this started about halfway through the story.) At this point I've changed a lot and it's out of date but I've kept it up for inspiration. I mean--look at him! He deserves an HEA.

It slipped my mind that I kind of promised a making-of post - sorry @notabuddhist, who so kindly gave me permission to bind One of Many Great Fires for @pleasantboatpress!
I've tried to include as many making-of photos but sometimes i am just a shit photo taker so I am very sorry in advance.
Tumblr media
Step 1: Stitch a text block and planning, Endband making
Tumblr media
Anyone who knows me knows I love a good rounded book. I started rounding books from my third bind and haven't looked back.
I took a little while to get to this as it required colour printing and I don't have a colour printer at home. I finally got off my ass close to the end of Binderary and went to the printer I usually go to to print my coloured prints - luckily they didn't read my gay porn or ask me about it, though I've been getting increasingly pointed questions about what exactly i'm making.
glue round number 1 and trim with my guillotine, and then i take my trusty hammer to the spine to do some rounding.
So, okay, anyone who's read this fic knows it takes place on Vulcan. And i've seen enough imagery on star trek to know Vulcan is endless red sand and heat and oh boy, i feel hot just thinking about it.
I knew red would be a colour that fit thematically and I had recently found lovely marbled paper that really looked so much like the gas giant appearance of Jupiter but red. I then pulled out my trusty colibri cranberry bookcloth to do a couple of colour match checks- i love colibri and will never not recommend it.
Usually at this point, I do my endbands - and I did a simple two colour front bead endband because when i started this, that was all I knew how to do.
Tumblr media
Step 2: Case making
I recently found out that what i usually do for books is called the square back bradel bind (though technically this is not square back), but you get my meaning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Case is made, and then glued to bookcloth. Look at those crisp edges, yum yum. I'm generally a messy glue user, so you can see all the bits of paper stuck to the back of the half-done case, also with big F and Bs drawn on them because i never remember which side i want the front and back to be. The case looks pretty good with nary a glue stain. (I did a good job with glue management this time, phew)
Step 3: Decorative steps
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My usual go-to is HTV because I'm not quite adept at other arty decorative methods like paint or usage of the foil quill. I decided to go with vulcan calligraphy on the back - with a river binding strip of marble paper in the middle. To make it look extra fancy, i made little silver HTV strips to border the river binding strip, though it warped a little from the heat because it was so ridiculously thin.
Step 4: Casing in
No photos of this because i'm usually hopping on one foot doing things on speedmode with PVA.
Shall pay tax with this photo - I love taking photos of my bookshelf and I really loved the burst of colour of the bookshelf after Binderary'23 was over.
I have made something like 21 case binds, but nearly 30 book binds (inclusive of coptic and stab) in total. that's a pretty decent number for someone who's only been binding for the last 9 months.

Another ficbind down! This one I put together at the request of a friend. It’s one of her favorite fics for a pairing that really took over her brain real estate for the past 3-4 years or so.
When she asked for Something So Dear by forthesanityof1, I checked and it’s over 180k words. My longest ficbind so far. I had to work up to this one—got a few bookbinding projects done and then tackled this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The title page is really simple and uses a lovely ornament by @cmdonovann that I got through the Renegade Bindery server, which has been such a wealth of resources. I slapped together the chapter ornaments myself, trying to work out a balance of flower and tattoo design (because it’s the whole premise of the fic).
Tumblr media
Sorted out that pesky recto-verso problem, thank goodness.
I also had some fun figuring out how to build out the text conversations in the fic. I’ve been typesetting a lot since February and have employed a different strategy each time to denote texting. There’s some chat fics I like but constructing the typesets for those will be a… much later project. Compiled social media history stories are really cool to see and I want to do them justice. This one has just a few minor pieces of text in chat format, so I played with typesetting that.
Tumblr media
The edges look chewed up because I tried to shave the textblock down to make it pretty and even on the side, but I was using a box cutter and didn’t realize the blade wouldn’t cut the full girth of the signatures. I had to flip it and things went poorly. Another bookbinding lesson learned! I still really like this one, it turned out very pretty. My friend will be getting this once I ship it off—I haven’t sent her pictures of it and she isn’t on Tumblr anymore. I hope she enjoys it as much as I enjoyed making it and problem-solving all the pieces!

All of the detail in your latest post is incredible I can't imagine how long you must've spent on all of those finishing touches!! Please tell me how you did the floor details 🙏
MEANT TO ANSWER THIS LIKE FOUR DAYS AGO AND WHIFFED IT
but now i am here with many screenshots!! probably too many, some are saying!
First, i just counted and the ground alone is 10 layers so
I started with the base grey color, added in the beige stripes, and then put the tile pattern over it. For the tiles, i found a good hexagon png, and then copy+paste+merged down that sucker until i wanted to scream, then used the transform tool to put it into vague perspective
Tumblr media
you can also see in the screenshot that the tiles didnt actually run all the way back to the building. this was part because realistically at that distance you wouldn't be able to make out individual small tiles anyways, and part because i couldn't be fucked to copy+paste one more time
to fix that, i put a mask over the tiles and gently airbrushed out the further away bits, as well as randomly selecting areas to buff out for variety. I also added a shadow over the beige stripes going from the background to foreground to make the areas near the building fade out even more
Tumblr media
Textures!!! My two big ones are rake brushes, and spatter brushes. First i went in with the rakes (and it looks like my weird screen tone brush in some areas?), using a darker grey-blue on the grey sections, and a darker orange in the beige.
Then we did spatter in reverse! the grey-blue tone was used on the stripes, and the beige was used on the main ground. this helps really break up the large shapes and confuse the eye into seeing a bunch of detail without looking too close.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
finally, i went back into the layer with the tile lines, locked that shit, and painted over some of the darker areas with beige and used some haphazard rake brushes for variety in there too.
Tumblr media
there's also a cool gradient soft light layer i threw on it at the very end, but that's not part of the detailing, just cool :)
Tumblr media
thank you and hope this helps!

Chronicles of making Rhamiel! The tail took the longest by far. You can also see the point where I realized his leg was too long and had to perform surgery to shorten it. I actually had to cut his front legs off completely and lengthen them at one point but I didn’t take any photos.
His neck/head were the last to be completed because I wanted to make sure I knew how big the rest of his body was first. It’s hard to accurately predict sizing with needle felt. I knew there’d be a very real risk of making his head too big or too small and having to redo it.
(Please disregard the Potter thing in the corner of one of these, someone gave it to us for Christmas and we don’t know what to do with it)

For Vy-chan~ @writer-and-artist27
I forgot to post these for so long huhuhuhuu 😭 just some other faces of your girl from when I first started this piece, and a bit near the end before the final edits. They were so fun to experiment with, and they came out so cute~! It’d be a shame to hide them away forever. Can’t believe I haven’t posted them until now agh 🤦🏻‍♀️
Tbh, I really liked the light blue background I started with (it’s the “Hoshino Tomoko” color in my head nowadays lol), and I wish I kept it somehow. The sunny background with clear blue skies really fits our sunshine girl. It wasn’t working with the texture I was trying for, but in its own way, I think the plain blue was really nice. This starry version I finished with was also really cool- really emulated that “Hoshino” glow ehe~ for the finale I added some glow lighter purple in the middle, was kinda going for galaxy-vibes, I guess? I had issues with the coloring of the letters tbh; once I added the lighter purple, I couldn’t keep the yellow lettering. I tried all sorts of colors, but the most visible was this orange brown, so I stuck with it as a callback to Obito 🥽👍🏼
